FORGIVE

30

| DECEMBER 2019

VENESS is not forgetting, but a new beginning. BY IGOR SAMPAIO

W

HO HASN’T BEEN HURT by the actions or words of another? Perhaps a parent constantly criticized you growing up, a colleague sabotaged a project or your partner had an affair. Or maybe you've had a traumatic experience, such as being physically or emotionally abused by someone close to you. These wounds can leave you with lasting feelings of anger and bitterness — even vengeance. But if you don’t practice forgiveness, you might be the one who pays most dearly. By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy. Consider how forgiveness can lead you down the path of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The problem for many of us is that sometimes we can choose to forgive another, but still in our heart of hearts, the anger or resentment lingers. However, it is in fact possible to forgive and truly let go of past disappointments, hurts, or blatant acts of abuse. Although at times this may seem implausible, forgiveness is a teachable and learnable skill that can dramatically improve with practice over time. Harvard researcher and physician George Vaillant describes forgiveness as one of the eight positive emotions that keep us connected with our deepest selves and with others. He considers these positive emotions to be key ingredients that bind us together in our humanity and they include love, hope, joy, compassion, faith, awe, and gratitude. Whether you have a spiritual bent or not, the research supports the notion that developing stronger positive emotions supports us in leading healthier, happier, and more connected lives. When we forgive and develop these other positive emotions we become less encumbered by the scars of the past.

WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?

• Forgiveness is a ‘balm’. When your heart is wounded, apply this balm; it will heal your heart. Learning how to ‘let go’ is the secret to live in peace. We should decide to free ourselves from corrosive anger. • Biblically, the word ‘forgive’ means “to let it go” in other words having pardon, discharging the way of thinking on an offender regardless whether they deserve your forgiveness or not. It’s obedience to God. • Do not show antipathy towards the offender. Forgiveness, therefore, is the act of pardoning the offender. You deliberately accept and release this burden putting your focus ahead. • Forgiveness is divine – “Forgiveness is more than saying sorry.” Forgiveness pacifies the beat and calms the heart. ‘Toxic substances’ should not over exhaust the heart. • Forgiveness is a pathway to healing; it can repair and bring back things to normalcy especially where there is destruction – a whole damaged relationship can be repaired. • Yes, a relationship will be repaired or healed, but it will not be ‘a walk in the park’ to bring it back to normalcy. Forgiveness embraces grace and sympathy. Nevertheless, it does not mean that the offender should not meet the consequences, by facing legal battles. • Professionals who teach about forgiveness say that when forgiving do not allow or deny the seriousness of an offense done against you. It is not easy to forget.

FORGIVENESS LEADS TO FREEDOM

Bitterness is mental prison. There is so much weight, stress and exhaustion involved when you hold on to unforgiveness. Grudges weigh us down, depletes our energy, and gives the person or circumstances control that shouldn’t exist in our lives. Forgiveness says to the offender: “I’m beyond your reach”. After becoming better at forgiving we actually learn to pity and have compassion for those who offend us. Forgive whatever’s holding you back. Hold a ceremony if you need to. If you still haven’t made peace with a person, or circumstance,

the only option is to forgive. Without the weight you once carried, you can now fly freely for a lighter life.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FORGIVING SOMEONE?

Letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for improved health and peace of mind. Forgiveness can lead to: • Healthier relationships • Improved mental health • Less anxiety, stress and hostility • Lower blood pressure • Fewer symptoms of depression • A stronger immune system • Improved heart health • Improved self-esteem

“The beginning is always today” —MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEYNG

Remember that you cannot control others, but you can control your own choices. As you continue to reshape your grievance story — becoming the hero of that story, developing empathy, and compassion for the abuser and celebrating your strengths — you will undoubtedly begin to notice a shift in your consciousness. Your feelings of anger and sadness are likely to quiet down and your self-esteem is likely to blossom, as will your relationships. Inquire deeply about the root of your anger or grudge. Look at the situation honestly, without embellishing or rearranging the details. Pay attention to how this anger is holding you back and keeping you hostage in your own day-to-day existence. Develop your capacity for empathy and compassion for yourself for landing in a painful situation. Blaming yourself for not seeing the signs sooner doesn’t help, and slows down the process of making change. Also, in my professional experience, usually abusers have been abused themselves, and they are operating at a deficit. Without accepting their hostile behaviors, try to understand the pain and suffering that he or she must be enduring. You can understand and forgive without accepting bad or abusive behavior.

Finally, try to learn from experience and take something positive, even if it is at least a good learning. And remember “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” —LAO TZU DECEMBER 2019 |

THE JOKER’S NATTY NEW CLOTHES BY IGOR SAMPAIO

| DECEMBER 2019

T

HE FIRST THING YOU MIGHT NOTICE ABOUT TODD Phillips’ Joker is that it’s not a story of superheroes. Joaquin Phoenix is not depicted battling Batman or hanging out with Harley Quinn. All it took was a personal letter from director Todd Phillips for costume designer Mark Bridges to agree to work on Joker Phillips’ gritty, controversial reimagining of the “Clown Prince of Crime’s” origin story. The Joker is one of the few comic book villains arguably as famous as the hero he clashes with, and one of the reasons he stands out among all of Batman’s antagonists is how he’s presented. From Jack Nicholson’s 1950’s pop art design, to Heath Ledger’s now iconic punk rock-inspired look, to Jared Leto’s much derided high fashion; how the Joker is dressed is equally as important as the man who puts on the face paint. Mark Bridges learned during an early meeting that Phillips and Phoenix had clear ideas for Joker’s appearance. “They came to the table with a digital mock-up, but we had more of a discussion about each look rather than sharing a bunch of visual references”. The silhouette is very reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin – the size of the pants, the smaller jacket. But also some reference from comic books, but this story is treated as real life, so what we can see on screen is a deep conception of costume, built using a character’s mind as a bases. Bridges designed the Joker outfit as a 1970’s-inspired maroon-colored palette suit and that has a slightly longer line. This Joker dons a maroon red two-piece suit with shoulder pads, a gold waistcoat, and a green collared shirt. Visually, he is a totally new iteration of the maniacal DC villain. Bridges dressed Arthur in polyester, tying in an era-appropriate color palette. Bridges felt “three colors should go together: green, gold, and red.” Influences included Cesar Romero‘s outrageous Joker — particularly how green was used as an accenting color — and Bernhard Goetz, New York’s 1984 “Subway Vigilante.” He says “I imagined if he ever did laundry, everything went into the washer at the same time. We made a kind of bad laundry feel to the clothing. It’s those subtle choices you can make for a character that inform the audience who they are and how they live. Creating a backstory involved looking at Fleck’s complex character and surroundings. All of my choices were based on something to say about the person, and I looked at his vaguely outdated worn shirt, polyester pants and acrylic sweater that was inexpensive and might have been bought at a thrift store. I was trying to paint a picture as we learn about this man’s life, and my choices also came from his personal appearance and financial status as he is living in a metropolitan area on the low rung, hand to mouth.” Between the real-life warnings, a concept look and a interesting script, this Joker is a new proposal for a old character, and gets to make the audience reflect for actual things. No doubt, \ it grabs you by the neck.

A NOMAD’S HEALTHY ROUTINE BY MÁRCIA FEIJÓ

F

OR MANY WHO TRAVEL, IT MAY SEEM IMPOSsible to stick to a healthy routine. If you are taking a short weekend trip, or if you are not traveling so often, it is unlikely that a few days off will spoil your healthy life habits. But who has never felt unexpected reactions of our own body when exposed to longer periods of travel? And for many of us, it is just not about having a few days of rest, we want to maximize our experiences when traveling: visiting attractions, exploring the local shops and trying local delicacies, flavors and spices. Besides all of that hectic fun, sometimes we have underlying stress and tension during the travel itself, such as jetlag, flight fatigue and the unavoidable weather conditions and neverending airline delays. But, don’t panic! I have some easy and practical tips to make the most out of your trip, coming back home full of memories – and of course with more likes and followers from posts and stories.

OVERCOME THE JET LAG

Travelling to a different time zone over a short period of time confuses our biological clock, which takes some time to be readjusted again. The so-called ‘circadian rhythm’ is a natural, roughly 24-hour period that regulates sleep-wake cycles. When off, you may feel unusually tired and sleepy during the day, you’re more likely to experience challenges to sleep at night and bowel habits may also significantly change. Your body’s internal clock is largely regulated by sunlight (and a lack of it), so if your flight arrives in the morning, seek the sunlight. One way to do it is to explore a new or unfamiliar place by lacing up and tackling a few miles. Getting some sun may help you reset your internal clock, and exercise can help you fall asleep more easily later on.

USE AN APP TO GET ORGANIZED

It may seem contradictory to advise using mobile apps to organize your activities during a trip, as it may affect your freedom to explore a new destination. But it is just the opposite. Plan ahead and make the most of every attraction without forgetting others, or worse, wasting time in the hotel bed while you should be exploring the new city! By using a simple calendar app, you can keep track of attractions and activities throughout the day and discover what really motivates us to travel around. On the other hand, setup reminders for meals and daily exercises. Many apps also record calories gained and lost, providing a better idea of how we are behaving day by day. Perhaps following a healthy eating behavior is not quite what we want on a trip but keeping up a balanced diet always has its place.

| DECEMBER 2019

SET A BEDTIME AND STICK TO IT

When you’re out of town, there are some factors you can’t control such as time zones. But you can still make a few good choices to help you get adequate and quality sleep time even while you’re dealing with unavoidable jet lag. Do just like you would during a busy week at home: target a bedtime. Then work backwards from your wakeup time in the next morning, so you’re booking enough hours to feel well-rested enough to explore and enjoy at your fullest. Business travel can scramble your usual working hours– which might be already long enough –so it’s all about setting boundaries. The more you pick a bedtime that’s close to your typical hours, the better.

EAR PLUGS & EYE MASK

At home we have much more control over our sleeping environment, including sound, lights, temperature and overall comfort levels. If you’re staying in a city hotel, you’re going to be fighting off some light and noise pollution. Or you might even share a room with someone who snores. In any case, being armed with some simple, basic and small tools for a good night of sleep is going to be something you thank yourself for when you’re energized enough to walk around in the next day. A good pair of earplugs to drown out any undesired noise and an eye mask to keep the light out should be your go-to sleep gear. This means you are ready to sleep anywhere easily, from the crowded downtown to the backcountry. After taking these basic but valuable tips, I’m sure everybody will enjoy your trip even more. Try to incorporate some of these habits before your departure day, making it smoother for your body and mind to transition and accept them.

the new fashioned girl

WHEN TO START OVER BY ROBERTA STUANI He left behind home, family, friends, safety, love. He started over. Or did he just keep following the path he set forth for himself ? She decided to put an end to a solid marriage, which although it was good and somehow worked, it didn’t complete her, it didn’t fulfill her heart. She didn’t feel alive. Or did she just realized that she needed to find herself again, and that her life would stay the same, or only change its route? He was a self-taught genius. She dropped her studies, she no longer felt that she belonged to that universe. She never wanted children, family, marriage. She wanted independence, money, prestige. She lived her life for work. She got ill. She decided to change jobs, and moved back to her parents’ house. Did she decide to have a new life or just recognized that she lost herself amongst life’s priorities and came back to fix what she needed? She now wanted to have children.

What if the story was “a new beginning” and not an end of a journey... But the end as a start, an actual beginning in the same life?
