HEARTBREAKERS an interview with Vast Hill BY CARLOS PARDO
W
E TALK WITH ELLE KRESS & ADIN Milo from the Australian synth-dream pop duo about their ‘80s, country western inspired fashion style and also on their debut album “More Than You Imagined”, full of mellow tones, angelic vocals and heartache. The first thing I noticed was your gorgeous sense of fashion. Where does the inspiration come from? We’ve always been huge fans of dressing up! There are a couple of quintessential outfits that go on rotation throughout the year. We’ve always been huge fans of 80s music, movie and fashion. Gotta give it to a time when boys wore more makeup than the girls. Just remember, peacocking isn’t necessarily a bad thing! What are your fashion references? Gotta look up the classics! We’re always on Pinterest looking up random things like “80s cowboy”, “Rob Lowe” or something like that. Can’t look past a couple of goggles of “MIAMI IN THE 80s” and zooming in on the people walking around to steal their look. What are the pieces of clothing that now you just can’t live without? At this point in time, I think we’d both die without a good pair of cowboy boots. Can you tell us more about Vast Hill from a musical vibe standpoint? We’re a rock-pop group that was inspired by the songwriting of the 60s and the sounds of the 80s. Sprinkle some disco vibes in there and you’ve got Vast Hill.

How does the boyfriend/girlfriend relationship help in your fashion styling and your music composition process? Coz we’re both not shy to wear something that will cause double-takes, we both egg each other on (and sometimes rein each other in). The songwriting aspect is a strange one actually. We both don’t actually write together much. We mainly write 90% of a song by ourselves then bring it to the other one to save. Can you tell us more about your debut album “More Than You Imagined”? More Than You Imagined has been our little baby for the last 3 or so years. It’s a concept album that tells a story from start to finish about a boy moving into a small town and experiencing puppy love. We worked with an amazing team to get it off the ground, including Michael Chow from 80s synth-duo FROYO, and Aussie legend Luke Million. What can we expect from Vast Hill in 2020? We have some things in the works at the moment, could be more videos for tunes off the album? Or even new material recorded in an authentic 80s way with a full band and rockin’ guitar riffs? Dunno, hard to say ;) What I can tell you is we’ll be blowing the roof off all our shows to come, including the main support for World Champion on their tour. Check out Vast Hill’s debut album “More Than You Imagined” on Spotify, iTunes and Google Play Music. Follow the duo’s adventures on Instagram @vasthill85.

HEART OF GLASS F E AT U R I N G L A A R D E S I G N
In today’s fast-paced fashion that rests on increased consumerism and consumption, Croatia’s Laardesign duo breaks the status quo responding with slow and sustainable fashion, contrasting timeless pieces made of tweed, cashmere and eco leather. The collection is dominated by black and emphasis on neutral shades. The focus is on coats, jackets, shirts and XXL sleeves. At the Zagreb Fashion Destination recently held, the Pula duo sent two very powerful messages: the use of recycled materials, and the premise of the universality of the fashion language, regardless of gender, race or class. Heart of Glass which, as if to say, the heart is like a planet .... priceless and fragile.

NAILED IT! BY RENATA SANFILIPPO

APANESE FASHION IS SOMETHING THAT always brings curiosity to people from all over the world and living in Japan made me understand and better appreciate their creativity and attention to details. Take for example manicure. In Japan, it is part of their fashion and the way they do nails is very unique and innovative. I’m personally a big fan of Harajuku, a neighborhood filled with pop culture, bright and colorful fashion and amazing themed cafes that will never bore you while you shop for unique fashion. The 3D nail art they have at most of the nail salons will completely blow your mind away. They offer a multitude of tiny handmade nail charms to apply on top of your natural nails made of acrylic powder. The nail places are so full of crystals, colorful powders, builder gels and colorful glitters that can be mixed in a small little bowl, so you can always create your own unique look. It almost feels like you are baking a cake where you are the chef and you can come up with any ingredients! The results are not only amazing, but extremely lasting, which is good because it takes a long time to get them done!

This specific salon I went to has a Hawaiian vibe with plants and typical Hawaiian music, making me feel very cozy and relaxed while getting my nails done. Just like other places in Japan, they go above and beyond on decorations and music. They even had a dog that was the mascot for the nail salon. After getting my nails done, which took me a solid 4 hours, I got to see some of the other styles they can create, much different from the common western style. They use builder gels with brushes which can make nails longer just by applying that. The result is a very natural thin look without any nail plastic tips. To tell you the truth, I was a bit overwhelmed with all the possibilities of styles and creativity – you can be as creative as your mind goes! I did go overboard and had to ask them to make the 3D powder characters appliques in advance before I got into the salon, as it took them many hours of work. They do charge more than a regular manicure, but it is very worth the experience and quality. I know there are some Japanese nail salons around the US, so even if you can’t go to Japan, find a local one and definitely give it a shot!

STAY FIT WHILE YOU TRAVEL BY MÁRCIA FEIJÓ
K
EEPING FOCUS ON A HEALTHY DIET WHILE traveling may not be a priority for many people, but for those who are trying to keep up the good form or at least gain less weight on a travel, adopting new habits can be lifesaving. Maintaining the behavior and food education that you practice daily back home is key while enjoying your ride. After all, adhering to healthy practices in life is a choice, and that choice result in conscious attitudes that bring results naturally. Travelling impacts food: different ingredients, spices, portion sizes and sometimes cost matters as well. But when we travel, don’ t we seek to explore the local culture to the fullest and to be filled with visual, tactile and gastronomic experiences?! It is possible to travel and maintain a well-balanced diet and avoid that unpleasant swelling as well as that large loss of our muscle mass. And unlike what you think, it’s not a difficult task! Remember: more importantly than the diet per say is the awareness of healthy habits while traveling.
FOOD FOR FLIGHT: if you have any dietary restrictions, keep in mind that most airlines have alternative dining options. When booking your flight, make sure to choose your meal according to your restriction. It’s a free service! WATER, WATER AND MORE WATER: when arriving at your hotel, look for nearby markets to buy jugs of water and leave it in your room. This avoids unnecessary spending on small bottles and encourages you to drink more fluid. Fill in a couple of small bottles and put them in your backpack for your day. Staying hydrated is paramount to a healthy trip, as well as significantly helping in keeping your bowel movements. LOCAL MARKET: include a visit to the city market in your first day. Make a list of the foods you usually consume in your diet - or at least their equivalent or similar. Nuts, seeds (such as chia or flax), whole grain snacks, fruits, lots of water… Having them rightly available in your backpack helps a lot to stay focused, save money and keep your weight. The goal is to at least maintain what you have already achieved. LEMON, THE SAVIOR! If you have the opportunity to buy and leave them at your hotel room, don’t think twice! Squeeze lemon into water and drink every morning while still fasting. Lemon, contrary to what most people think, helps to 52
| JANUARY 2020
alkalize the body and strengthens immunity, as well as detoxifying the body. It’s an amazing for travel, as we end up consuming more fat and food outside our usual diet.
BREAKFAST: breakfast is included in your stay, make a balanced and complete meal. Fruits, juices, whole grain bread, egg or cheese and lean protein. Eat like you’re eating at home. If there are only carbohydrates (bread or toast) made with white flour, there is a better option! Remember the chia or flax seeds I suggested you to get? Top your white bread with a spoon of those seeds. They help with better managing satiety and also contain several important nutrients for our body, decreasing glycemic peaks of white flour. And of course, avoid sausage, bacon, donuts, salami, cakes, pies and other things you KNOW are hypercaloric. Resist them, it is worth! MEAL INTERVAL: eating every 3 hours is essential to prevent your body from seeking energy in the muscles by burning your lean mass. Watch the clock and try to eat healthy and complete meals at these intervals. Remember what you bought in your local market, they are just for those occasions. Whenever you leave the hotel in the morning, stock up on your backpack. Throughout the day, a simple tip that makes such a difference is to eat fruits with nuts as a snack. They are an excellent source of fat and prevent glucose peaks of fructose. An alternative to nuts is to bring sugar-free peanut butter: lots of energy and good fat for your tourist day! ALCOHOL: besides being very caloric, it metabolizes our lean mass (muscles). I know, I know… Everything that is good makes you fat, but there is a lot of good stuff out there that helps us keep fit! If you drink a little more, take an isotonic the next day. They help minimize the effects of a hangover and allow you to enjoy the next day without suffering that much. Another tip is to drink a lot of water on days when you know you will have a few more drinks! Eat well whether you’re on vacation or not! More than focusing on the diet, focus on a healthy choice! After all, you are opting for a lifestyle!

THE ELEGANCE OF EVIL BY IGOR SAMPAIO
W
ALT DISNEY’S MALEficent: Mistress of Evil, features Angelina Jolie again in the main role, following a recent Hollywood trend of anti-heroes as protagonists, this character who was thought to be the embodiment of evil, now manages to click with the audience with a mix of fear, elegance and power. A result that is not achieved quite often, especially knowing that the film is aimed for children. In addition to the exquisite visual effects, the characterization of the protagonist has a major impact to the general public. As part of this construction, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick’s work truly deserves special attention. In order to achieve a new version of its villain, the costume research was based from the 15th century until the Renaissance period. The costumes evolve from mossy colors and flowing fabrics to dark and sculptural, in much heavier forms. Maleficent’s costume, in addition to her stunning clothing, was accessorized with horns, feathers, teeth, animal skins, beads and bones. Make-up artist Rick Baker created cheeks, nose and ears in silicone and gel, horns in urethane resin and hand-painted contact lens to achieve
62
| JANUARY 2020
the desired color tones. The complete costume as a whole, demanded tons of research, as it is not that simple to recreate a fantastic world with such an impact to the audience. Mirojnick explained that her research incorporates a variety of sources. “It starts with fine art and paintings for the most part. It could be very abstract. I’ll look at fashion, I’ll look at things that are relatable within the material”. Other influences include nature, tribal civilizations, the Renaissance era, medieval garments, and costumes used in children’s illustrations. Likening the process to something out of a fantasy, Mirojnick sums it up as “whatever visual reference I can conjure, it’s going on a magic carpet ride.” In this movie the protagonist has gigantic black wings, which makes her able to fly freely. On top of it all, the costume was designed to be more fluid in order to facilitate her flight. So for her dresses, Mirojnick selected soft, airy, fluid fabrics that could be layered for extra effect and dimension. In addition to lose cuts, the fabrics used were natural and lightweight fibers, avoiding more obvious fabrics for this type of character, such as leather and velvet. Out of the ordinary was also the color palette, instead of the traditional red and black ones, the designer used green, ochre and bronze elements to bring Maleficent back to the big screen.

THE BATTLE SCENE DRESS
Perhaps Maleficent’s most interesting costume during the whole movie is her battle scene. She shows up in a super tight black dress, in a kind of bandage, which besides shaping the body of Angelina Jolie, has strong references to feathering birds and tree leaves. A unique and sexy model that you could easily see on any red carpet or runway. Ellen confirms that she had strong inspiration in forest elements, making a connection with the character’s personal story. “That’s her battle uniform, and it comes as a result of her learning where she comes from and who she is. We learn that she comes from the forest and she comes from a tribe of winged, horned fey. The character design for the dark fey was influenced by early tribes of different regions, where the battle gear of these tribespeople were themselves. They didn’t wear armor, but instead painted their bodies. That was the inspiration for Maleficent’s battle look, and we hoped to create a design that would best tell the story of where she came from, and that with that dress, she was being true to herself and her tribe” – says Ellen Mirojnick. “When they are going to battle there is a ritual of painting’,’ referring to the Dark Fae. “Creating a garment that looks as if it has been painted or is feathered was the intention for this centerpiece look that brings new meaning to a fierce queen”. Mirojnick explained that the bottom half of the costume “evolved from the dinner dress”, which is very sustainable in approach. This particular garment is serving up New York Fashion Week looks, and there is a reason why. “We asked the uber-talented Ralph & Russo to come and adapt a fabrication or a paint that could be used on a mesh to create this [brushed feathered] effect”, she revealed. Whether it’s by Maleficent’s costume or the strenuous dresses of Queen Ingrith, now Queen of the Moors, Aurora, the movie immerses you into a fantastic make-believe world. An epic visual show for those who enjoy fashion and a good movie.
