Gianni and Donatella Versace

FROM FASHION EMPIRE TO REVIVAL BY RICHARD LANCARIC

W

HAT MAKES THE MIAMI FASHION SCENE SO special? Could it be the luxury boutiques and designer stores galore, the year-round warm weather bringing trendy swimwear and sculptured bodies, the Miami Vice 80s’ rolled sleeves and bright suits? Or perhaps something else? Let’s explore and find out together. One good place to start is in South Beach: Casa Casuarina, more commonly known as the iconic Versace Mansion, a Mediterranean Revival home (a style found often in South Florida) that was once occupied by legendary Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. Versace broke fashion paradigms bringing bold colors, intrepid prints and risqué designs that were not typical at the time. Some say that Giorgio Armani dressed the wife, while Versace dressed the mistress. Donatella Versace used to walk in South Beach with her brother and while in front of the old Amsterdam Hotel, he rhetorically said “I want this house”. Donatella responded “but it wasn’t a house; it was literally an apartment building, and people were living in it!”. Gianni said “don’t worry, we’ll get the lawyers”. And he did it, not sure how.

“I THINK IT’ THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A DESIGNER TO TRY TO BREAK RULES AND BARRIERS” —GIANNI VERSACE

Versace not only had a keen eye for design but an equally amazing taste in homes. From salient earth tones, to amazing tile work, this well-put together mansion has it all—Versace always liked over the top design and his previous home shows it. At the time, the mansion became a true milestone, moving much of the fuzz from L.A. to Miami Beach. Donatella once told The New York Times: “All the fashion shoots were happening here. Music people, fashion people, actors—he attracted everyone here. He had that power. In the courtyard, right here, you’d see Italian architects, writers, Richard Avedon, Madonna, a mix of people”. But times have been hard for 1116 Ocean Dr. After the designer’s assassination by Andrew Cunanan in 1997, Casa Casuarina had a bit of an identity crisis. In 2000 the property was purchased by Peter Loftin for $19 million and then converted into a boutique hotel. Change wasn’t over: the next phase in the history of 1116 Ocean drive began in 2013 when Mr. Loftin and VM South Beach had a financial dispute and Mr. Loftin declared bankruptcy on the property. At the time, the $125 million listing in South Florida was quite a remarkable sum, though not as much by today’s metrics. After a major price reduction of $78 million, the Versace Mansion sold to VM South Beach for $47 Million at auction. Fast forward to 2020, the Versace Mansion remains a boutique hotel at the heart of South Beach, still desperately trying to make a profit. Is the bad luck of this grande dame the result of a haunting of Gianni Versace? I’d say quite the contrary — perhaps he is the guardian of this gem of the ‘30s. A piece of him stayed to make sure that it stays true to its original grandeur. This legendary 10-bedroom beauty pulses with the sand and salt of South beach and was built at a time when people were just starting to discover how amazing South Florida was. Over the course of its life, the mansion witnessed a sleepy little beachfront community turn into one of the go-to destinations of the world. All it takes is a walk down Ocean Drive for you to hear the word “Versace”

36

| FEBRUARY 2020

spoken in a dozen different languages. I’m sure Gianni is looking down fondly. Miami is a special place in America with its desirable weather, global food and its multifaceted types of design. The pulse of Miami permeates with a sensual boldness, from overthe-top-cars to sexy curves, and Casa Casuarina is no exception. From its curved windows to its imposing pool, it delivers in spades. When Gianni first laid his eyes on 1116 Ocean Drive, he must’ve understood the special quality only it could offer to him, akin to when you first look into your partners eyes and know that they are uniquely suited for you. Today, it seems unlikely that the Versace Mansion will return to its original purpose as a residential space. One can only imagine the amazing feeling Gianni must’ve felt when waking up in the master bedroom of this spectacular place overlooking the soothing waves of the Pacific Ocean. 1116 Ocean Drive marks something special that needs to live on in the design trends of today. Modern architectural styles have their value, but new Floridian architects should always look back to make sure they are staying true to the rich architectural legacy of South Florida.

FEEL THE CHIC Let’s Talk Chicken Fashion BY RENATA SANFILIPPO

44

| FEBRUARY 2020

M

OST OF YOU PROBABLY never thought about it as being something that could possibly exist! Until I joined the chicken coop club of my neighborhood, I didn’t either. The love for animals, in this case chickens (and ducks too!) can take you places and situations where your craziest imagination could never take you. Giving your chicken a fresh manicure, a warm bubble bath with Moroccan oil – which most of them truly enjoy – feather drying them with a blow dryer can make a difference on their wellbeing. And you’ll feel much better about eating their eggs as well knowing that they are nice and clean. Fashion designers are going above and beyond on their creations and anything is possible when it come to the world of poultry and fashion. Runway shows and websites are emerging every year with so many options to choose from. Call me eccentric, but I always enjoyed dressing my animals and doing their nails and hair. After getting my first chicken, I learned how chicken fashion and chicken pageants do exist and are fun and competitive. I planned one myself at my house where we drank cham-

pagne and dressed our chickens in the most amazing outfits and jewelry. Sometimes I find chicken owners sharing their jewelry with their chickens – who doesn’t enjoy all the love and pampering they get from it? Chickens do too! Ducks are a bit messier and not as tamed as chickens for all that pampering but I got to say that there are a big variety of places that will custom make costumes for Halloween or even hats and dresses for everyday use. Diapers are the basic wardrobe piece for indoor chicken or duck, and they come in a variety of colors and patterns. You can pick your fabric and finishes like bows or Swarovski crystals. Feather clips and necklaces are another hit and by the way, my chicken’s favorite thing to wear. Chickens are smart animals and they do love mirrors just like us humans. Having them see themselves in nice fashion will for sure make a difference for them and for you. Sometimes you can see them wearing basic vests, but those are not considered fashionable. They are purely made to protect the chicken from being pecked by others. Costume making outfits can really get you to spend some money on your beloved pet and the more you dress them and create their outfits, the better you want to get at it. My ideal outfits for my chickens are the ones that she can match mine. I can see poultry fashion becoming a trend. We need to see chicken fashion as something fun, artistic and creative. Chickens are amazing models and perhaps the next emerging pet fashion trend!

50 YEARS OF FASHION AND CRIME BY IGOR SAMPAIO

A

FIVE-DECADE-LONG STORY means five decades of trends, looks, colors, fabrics and designs, all of which not only need to be true to their era, but also to convey something essential about the character who inhabits them. From the boxy shirts of the 50’s, through the retina-scorching prints of the 60’s, to 70’s bell bottoms and beyond, The Irishman is an epic that explores in detail the rise, fall and fade of old-time mobsters. By the way, it’s a Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic film, but in his words: “We

58

| FEBRUARY 2020

weren’t doing the same kind of gangsters as Goodfellas or Casino”. So here, an invitation is for a long trip. What allows the film’s costume designer, and One of the most decorated costume designers in film history, with three Oscars and 14 nominations, Sandy Powell, develop a deep work inside a gangster’s world. Powell has worked with Scorsese on nearly all of his films since 2002’s Gangs of New York, with Peterson working as an assistant costume designer on recent productions, including The Wolf of Wall Street. They were given a huge cache of information, including photographs and film footage, by Scorsese’s longtime researcher Marianne Bower, about the characters, whom they were tasked with dressing across five decades. So then, it came a double challenge. First,

the complex burden of de-ageing CGI. Then, a wardrobe brief that required men with more than 70 to be dressed up a lot younger. “The suits of those earlier periods do sort of help, it does sort of help hide body shape, says Powell. “But the most challenging thing was getting the guys to remember to walk and stand like younger people.” Comfort then, was out of the window, as Peterson explains: “It wasn’t until recent years that jeans and a sports jacket and a casual shirt became OK to wear. It was a bit gauche for a man to do that back then; you wanted to be a man of respect, and you wanted to be well-turned out.” Which obviously meant rigid, mafia tailoring. Lots of it.

COLOR PALETTE

“The palette was determined by the period, and Rodrigo Prieto did that with the effects he has created. The ’50s had a lot of blues and greys, and the ’60s, a lot of mustards and olives. That’s also reflected in the background and the crowd. The ’70s had burgundy and browns. That in my mind is where the color palette came from,” says Powel.

In Miami, a more tropical palette was applied with all the colors lighter. The guys are in light-colored, pastel-colored shirts and it’s suddenly different from all the city scenes.

A LONG JOURNEY…

More than 3 hours of movie is not easy. With 250 characters and 6,500 extras, a demanded a level of organization more akin to war planning, totalizing 7,000 pieces! There were 102 wardrobe changes only for Robert De Niro for example. “His fittings were incredible. We had hundreds of costumes each time we had a fitting. We just had to get them on and get them off and on and off. He just had the resilience, and he just did it. They were at least a fourhour minimum fitting. We must have had ten to 12 of those over the course of the film. We ended up with hundreds of fitting photos and it was the only way that we could figure out what he wore and when. It was the only way to follow the arc.” A care to details is so special that Powel prefered searching for original pieces in vintage fabrics and thrift stores. A hunt for

perfection that reflects on screen. Even for those who don’t know about the source of fittings, they can feel the texture and sensation of pieces. No doubt a challenge trying to get everything how it looked back then. For accessories, the whole history is a point of psychology and behavior: “There’s the ring that is a part of the story. Mainly tie bars, cufflinks and watches. The watches get nicer, but that’s about it. The whole point was these guys were under the radar and needed to keep quiet. Bob’s Frank was a hitman and didn’t want to be recognized everywhere he went.”

SO…

The story shuffles the decades like a pack of cards, production and costume design ensure that each vignette has a clear sense of time and place. For all its flash-back/ flash-forward tricksiness, The Irishman rarely seems disjointed or thematically fractured. It conjures a kaleidoscopic illusion of depth that only starts to shatter as the pace flags in the final act. Once again a great movie with the best professionals on the field.

IT’S ONLY A SCRATCH AWAY BY ANNA VIEIRA

I

N RECENT YEARS, GUA SHA HAS GAINED NOTORIETY across both the wellness and skincare markets as being a “must have” anti-aging tool for use on face and neck. Though it’s wonderful how much recognition Gua Sha is receiving, the true potential of this method is practically untapped, as facial Gua Sha is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the impact it can have on your entire body and system. One of the most ancient healing modalities, Gua Sha can dissolve aches and pains, prevent chronic disease, invigorate proper organ function, increase immunity, provide lymphatic drainage, boost circulation, improve metabolism, move Blood and Qi through meridians and provide specific microminerals and nutrients to the skin. The name Gua Sha (pronounced gwah-shah) originates from the Chinese word for scraping, dating back to the Paleolithic era. This treatment may also be referred to as skin scraping, spooning, or coining. It translates as scrape (Gua) and sand (Sha). It is generally used for pain relief. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pain is a result of stagnation: Blood and Qi (our life force) aren’t freely flowing, resulting in pain and discomfort. Scraping is the action demonstrated by the tool and sand describes the appearance of the skin once treated. The scraping activates capillaries and blood vessels that have become stagnate.

Once engaged, the vessels can resume sending nutrients, Blood and Qi to the corresponding area, diminishing pain. The scraping releases the stagnation and opens the meridians for proper flow. In terms of materials, Gua Sha tools have been made of various natural substances over thousands of years, most notably animal horn, a specific type of worked stone, trees and minerals.

NO SYSTEM EVER WORKS ALONE OR GETS INJURED ALONE OR HEALS ALONE

Nerves from your brain light up your face. They are called cranial nerves. They sprout from your brain and spiral to your face, head, and neck. When lymph can’t drain these areas effectively it impacts the fluid flow and this impacts nerves. When the distal part of the nerve struggles the whole nerve struggles. Read it once again! Distal means furthest away from the center. If the distal nerve can’t breathe from poor blood flow or the liquid environment around the nerve is full of cellular waste you feel it deep inside.

“If you keep the lymphatic system clear you can eliminate 70% of the chronic illnesses that are in part the result of that system being clogged” If we don’t first clear the accumulation of cellular waste under our skin, as result of lymph stagnation, there’s not much room left for fresh nutrients, oxygen, vital energies, fluid to feed and support the optimal functioning of our skin-body from within - as well as for the skin care that we topically apply. This accumulation increases as we age, which creates less and less space. We must clear the space through the appropriate face massage. Every Deep Green Holistic Esthetician has their methods with which they most resonate. Mine are Jade Tao Method (JTM), Vodder Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), Connective Tissue Massage (CTM) and AromaReflex. And the availability of amazing tools like Gua Sha, Kansa & gemstone wands, jade rollers, face reflexology tools has made so much easier for home care support to continue the results achieved during holistic face massage skin sessions.
