THE POWER OF INFLUENCE Y
BY CARLOS MARRERO
ouv’e probably seen Lisa Opie in a YouTube video or Facebook Ad. As the owner of LadyCode, a glam girl’s go-to channel with over 4 million views, Lisa loves all things glam and turned her love for beauty and fashion into a career through her swimwear line, Vizcaya Swimwear, and her beauty shop that features synthetic lashes, jewelry, and her signature wigs. In her free time, Lisa is a celebrity makeup artist and loves to use her talent to help women feel and look their best. How did you develop an interest in fashion, beauty, and travel respectively? Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been obsessed with fashion and beauty. When I was a child, I loved designing clothes for my dolls and that eventually translated over to me designing clothes for myself, and then eventually for others through Vizcaya Swimwear. I love the transformative power of beauty—makeover scenes from 90’s & 2000’s movies really inspired me! My interest in travel came later, after my first trip to Mexico when I was 19, I felt awakened and returned hungry for more. I decided to study abroad in Barcelona and Barbados, and during that time I traveled and explored multiple cultures between classes.

What were you doing before you became a blogger and Instagrammer, and what inspired you to pursue social media as a career? Before blogging, I was just selling swimsuits! I started Vizcaya Swimwear when I was 20 years old, and I relied heavily on social media for my marketing. Through that, I learned about the power of social media and decided to create my own accounts. LadyCode, my blog and my YouTube channel, blossomed from the idea that I wanted to share not only my stories and life experiences, but also feature successful women (and men!) to help empower and inspire young women. Today I use my YouTube and Instagram channels as a creative outlet. I create and share my work, whether its fashion, photography, makeup, or travel around the world. I also constantly turn to these channels for inspiration. How have your blog and Instagram feed evolved over time? Any specific turning points? Every time I get a new photo-editing app, I feel like the whole vibe changes. I love AfterLight, VSCO, and using Lightroom presets to make my feed unique! I’m constantly evolving so I think

that the stories I share on these platforms change with me, and I love seeing my readers grow and evolve with me. Outside of make up and creating content for your platforms, what creative mediums would you like to explore next? I love love love anything that involves the arts. I love painting, drawing, film editing, and photography. Right now, I have so much on my plate, but I know that anything I create next will most likely be a fashion product for LadyCode. How do you decide which brands to partner with, and how do you ensure that your fans are receptive to sponsored content? This is a tough one! Luckily, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of my dream brands like Urban Decay, Givenchy Beauty, Drunk Elephant, and Charlotte Tilbury. They’re the perfect fit for my beauty and fashion loving viewers. I turn down a lot of collaborations that are not the right fit for my brand, like housewares, pet supplies, etc. I always make sure I have full creative control of my content, so that it is tailored for me and my audience.

Where does you wig obsession come from? After I totally lost Miss Florida USA in like, 2015, I wanted a drastic change for myself (think break-up diet but for pageant rejection). I was going to cut my hair into a bob and bleach it platinum gray. When I was looking at inspiration for haircuts and color, an act of God brought me to a wig website where I found the exact hairstyle I wanted. It was only $40, which is cheaper than a haircut, so I decided to give it a go. I’ve been addicted to wigs ever since- like really, I feel bald if I don’t have a wig on. One beauty tip that you live by? Eye. Lashes. If you’re going to do one thing, make it LASHES, whether it’s eyelash extensions, mascara, lash tinting, or a good pair of #LisaLASHES, I think that emphasizing lashes will level your look up. Go-to outfit? A good designer tracksuit

1917 - WORLD WAR 1 IN ONE SHOOT BY IGOR SAMPAIO
I
T’S NOT JUST ANY MUD. IN 1917, the muck and mire of “No Man’s Land” traversed by two British soldiers on a mission to save 1,600 fellow soldiers from a German army ambush, oozes the very essence of messy wartime chaos. But like everything else in Sam Mendes’s World War I movie, even the mud was finetuned to the director’s exacting standards. For the World War I drama, which was meant to unfold as one long take, every segment of the scene would have to be precisely choreographed to link up seamlessly with the last frame of the previous shot and the first frame of the subsequent one. Since there could be no visible cuts, any mistake
74
| MARCH 2020
would mean starting from the beginning Heading into the 1917 shoot, which occurred between April and July of this year, the costume designers Jacqueline Durran and David Crossman had only 12 weeks of prep to figure all of this out. They had several substantial challenges to overcome, for example to craft perfectly realistic military attire with an extreme attention to detail, maintaining continuity in support of a rare kind of cinematic illusion. “The main impact of that was [the necessity of keeping tabs on] miniscule details of continuity. For the two standbys that were on set with the actors the whole time, it was a collaboration with the continuity woman, with everybody, to just get it absolutely pinaccurate. It was just fractional moves all the time. So, it was a lot of that, and there was an impact
on the number of duplicates that you need, because if you have to go back to the beginning of the take every time, you may need to change. It had a huge effect in the amount of work it was, because every day, you’d have everybody out. You’d have the whole run of the trench, the crowd and all those things.” Says Durran. Work on a period movie wasn’t a new thing for them, but details for military costume is no less difficult than other period movie: “We had a whole wall in our office of pictures, archived photographs from books. We took stills from Peter Jackson’s documentary [They Shall Not Grow Old], and looked at them constantly, through the whole prep period. We looked for details, and different ways in which people wore a uniform—how they customized it, what they wore with it. Different jobs in the trenches that meant that
people wore different things, whether they were waders [boots] or spades, all these different things. There was actually an endless number of details evident in these photographs, so that was our object.” Sam Mendes based the idea on his grandfather’s stories from the Western Front, and he came up with the single-take conceit as a way to ground the audience in every second of action. Most everyone
agrees he pulled it off: 1917 won Best Director and Best Drama at the Golden Globes and earned ten Academy Award nominations, won in 3 categories: Cinematography, Visual Effects and Sound Mixing. Specially about cinematography, we can see at screen a collaboration of costumes to increase a cold sensation of war field. Durran opted to balance a real reference of past
military uniforms but used a brown palette to bring audience to that moment. The costume seams to fusion with mud and dirty and it doesn’t pop up on eyes, and that is a beauty of its work. For those how want try a new experience in a war movie, 1917, is a new movie of an old theme, but for sure an exceptional masterpiece.

TRAVELLING IN SHAPE BY MÁRCIA FEIJÓ
Y
ou’ve worked hard to stay in shape at home, but your looming backpacking trip, vacation, business trip, relocation, or remote work lifestyle threaten to mess up everything. And now you’re freaking out because you’re not sure if you can travel and work out, and you’re worried you’ll lose all your progress. Traveling and working out can be difficult to balance. The uncertainties of what’s available and charging into the new and foreign can really dump all over your workout routine, if you are going to travel for some weeks. For a short trip, just for a few days, skipping your workout isn’t going to set back your progress. But there are so many benefits to breaking a sweat that are worth setting aside some time to train while traveling, including more energy and improved mood. That’s why we rounded up some of our top equipment-free, minimal-space travel workouts to help you make it happen no matter where you are. Plus, squeezing in a quick workout or two during your trip can make it easier to get back in the swing of things after you’ve unpacked your suitcases. You must treat the world itself as endless fitness possibilities: you
86
| MARCH 2020
can use a tree branch for pull-ups, stairs for bear crawls, a bench for step-ups, and so on. It’s a challenge to move our bodies through and within the world. And sometimes we pay to use some machines that simply are trying to replicate the real world. A stair machine is a good example but going upstairs at real stairs is 1000x harder than a machine. Trying to take a small equipment is a good option. Suspension trainers and resistance bands are perfect to get in fit and discover a new place. Suspension trainers open the doors to a whole new world of bodyweight exercises and add twists to the ones you already do. With them, you’re able to isolate specific muscle groups, like biceps and triceps, and turn your normal push-ups into “atomic push-ups” or something equally as fancy-sounding. They are going to cost you a little moola. If you take care of them, though, they can surely last for years. So, whether you’re on the road for work, fun, or visiting family, here are eight travel-friendly workouts to try.
1) 20-MINUTE HOTEL ROOM WORKOUT
Set the alarm clock to 15 minutes from now and see how many circuits you can do! 1. Bodyweight squats: 20 reps (you can use water bottles or luggage). 2. Incline push-ups: 15 reps (feet on floor, hands on edge of bed or desk). 3. One-arm luggage rows: 10 reps each arm (use your suitcase as your weight). 4. Reverse crunches: 10 reps.
2) CARDIO BLAST WORKOUT IN YOUR HOTEL ROOM 10 minutes morning workout, 40 seconds of workout and 30 seconds of rest in between sets • Mock jumping rope. • Burpee with push-up • Squat jump • Plank with shoulder tap • Jumping lunge
3) OUTDOOR PARK WORKOUT
Suspension trainers and bodyweight workouts at the park would be sweet, but you can also do sprints, walking lunges, or cartwheels on the grass. Here are a few workout ideas: try doing 20-second sprints barefoot on the grass and repeat 10 times. Or do walking lunges for 100 or 200 meters. But try this: • 10-15 bodyweight squats • 8-12 push-ups (use your knees if you must) • 20-30-second bicycle kicks • 20 jumping jacks • 12 lunges per leg • 15-30 second plank No rest between exercises, 1-minute rest between sets, repeat for 5 rounds.
4) USING A SUSPENSION TRAINER
While the possibilities are practically endless when it comes to suspension training, here are 6 exercises to do in a hotel room, or an outdoor hotel space. But If you’re adding suspension training to your exercise routine for the first time, don’t be afraid to take it slow. Try one or two exercises, master the form, then continue with your normal strength training routine. The last thing you want is to try more than you’re ready for and end up overly sore or injured. I strongly recommend you get a personal trainer before using this equipment. Once familiarized you can safely perform the exercises on any trip. • Squat to High Row • Pushup • Running Man • Bridge • Pike • Sit up-to-Curl • Rest between exercises for 30 seconds, repeat for 5 rounds.
FINALLY
If jet lag or schedule changes leave you exhausted, make your workout shorter or lighter than usual. It’s OK to take it easy occasionally. Because travel can be so disruptive to how you sleep and what you eat, it’s not always the best time to try to increase your fitness level. Remember, however, that regular exercise can help reduce stress and feelings of low energy, which might be just what you need to get down to business. Don’t stress yourself out! The main thing is that you enjoy yourself and make the most of your time travelling. It doesn’t really matter if you treat yourself a few too many times or don’t exercise as much as you’d planned – a trip may be once in a lifetime, so go have fun and then have some more fun!

that store fat, causing lipids to disperse. Several research articles have also supported the idea that exposing the torso or the testes to light has been shown to increase testosterone in men. It’s very important to use a device that emits the correct wavelengths with virtually no-heat. Testosterone production starts to increase significantly during puberty and begins to dip after age 30 or so. This is very typical, but it can cause reduced sexual function, decreased energy, a decline in muscle and an increase in fat. Red light therapy is one natural way
to increase testosterone. In addition, a balanced diet, proper sleep and reducing stress may help too. A systematic literature review evaluated eleven studies, which investigated a total of 680 patients, consisting of 444 males and 236 females. Nine out of 11 studies assessing hair count/hair density found statistically significant improvements in both males and females following red light treatment. Other notable benefits of red light therapy include muscle tissue repair, fading of scars and stretch marks, wound healing, enhanced health of the thyroid gland, reduced joint pain and improved arthritis symptoms. So, is red light therapy truly magical? Well, not really, but there are a lot of studies that back it up with proven results. While there is a lot of discussion on the dosage for the optimal benefits, consider it as an incredible and promising treatment – with no harmful side effects.
