hen I woke up this morning at 8:45 am for a videoconference, I had a flash of thought. I’ve experienced the feeling of living inside an 80s science fiction movie that I watched as a child. Finally (or unfortunately) I would be replacing personal contact through technology. Well, these technologies have been around for quite some time, and social media has already been bringing that gap in some manner. But to be conditioned under a new order of social isolation and replacing human touch with technology, that’s different. Things have changed for real. Probably much more than we anticipated and with a speed that scares. And it scares for the fact that the human condition is under criticism at this moment of extremes. What brings us here (Earth) and carries on our journey is now placed under a perspective of importance – which weights differently for each of us. What makes us wake up in the morning, like a simple coffee with your children, a small talk with your neighbor, hugging your parents, the realization of a personal project... All these small doses of happiness that feeds us daily, whether in any degree of size, are now put in the background for the sake of a greater good. This shows me that through a tortuous path, it is revealed to us that we are elements of a larger community, and that we do have a much greater role and importance. By depriving ourselves of our selfish desires, we are learning that the meaning of cooperation and compassion is our biggest part of ourselves. We can finally understand that we can be better because we have the best within ourselves. Today we have the shadow of misfortune hanging over much of the world, a dark cloud that haunts our thoughts and tries to erase our dreams. But we (undeniably) do have the inner strength to bring the light back. Stronger and brighter than before. We have the choice to let ourselves be positively impacted by this light of love, perseverance, and resilience, and to be better for ourselves and for everyone. And by choosing shadow or light is still, and will always be our option. Because after all we are the result of an equation of flesh, soul and much light!

GET READY FOR YOUR NEW FASHION ACCESSORY

Take a lesson from the runway where masks were more than a simple health item BY KARO DELGOBBO

MARINE SERRE FALL ‘ 20 AT THE PARIS FASHION WEEK

M

ASKS, are now the essential accessory of the pandemic, becoming the new fashion trend that many brands will incorporate in their collections even more. Recently, at Paris Fashion Week, many social media users reacted to the trend of face masks as an hypocrisy from French leaders, as France became one of the very first European countries to put a ban on fullface veils in public areas back in 2011... does that mean that the Niqāb is now back? Some models and social media influencers attended the show wearing masks that matched their looks. Many westerners would also mock or refer as an overreaction from Asian countries, where the practice of wearing a surgical mask at public spaces is considered absolutely normal for over years. The custom

24

| MAY 2020

of wearing a face mask started in Japan due to multiple unfortunate events, including a massive influenza pandemic in the early 20th century, the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, extreme air pollution in the 1950s and the more recent outbreaks of SARS in 2002 and the bird flu in 2016. It’s no news to Chinese fashion, designers have also been showing face masks in the runway for years due to the country’s poor air quality and infamous smog. Setting history aside, let’s face it: it is now a fundamental item against our invisible enemy, and now the symbol of something mysterious and hidden that ultimately creates a powerful fashion statement. I expect this fashion to go viral (no pun intended) in every Western country.

MASK-QUERADE Face masks are the fashion accessory of 2020 BY CARLOS MARRERO

H

ello Avessa readers! I hope everyone is staying safe and doing everything they can to protect themselves and our community in this time of crisis. I’m used to writing about the latest fashion trends, which I know at the moment can seem a tad superficial, but there’s a new fashion accessory that we simply can’t avoid in this new era - masks! The CDC has been recommending the use of face masks in public for a while now, and it looks like we’re going to be in this period of

28

| MAY 2020

social distancing and heightened precautions for quite some time. This means masks are going to be a must-have fashion item to have when going to the grocery store, going for a walk or a run in the park, or going to the post office - really, anywhere other than your home! Of course, the masks I’m referring to are those for us regular folk, and not those meant to be worn by healthcare workers and first responders. That’s a conversation for another time and a much more qualified person. But if you’re going to have to wear a mask when out and about, why settle for something that’s plain and boring and, dare I say it, un-

stylish? It doesn’t have to be this way! Indeed, fashion labels have been playing with masks long before the onset of the pandemic. Who can forget Billie Eilish and her Gucci mask at this year’s Grammy awards? Other fashion icons, such as Cristian Siriano, have been using their talents and converting their studios to full-scale mask production for frontline workers. Other fashion brands, including Louis Vuitoon, Off-White, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent are stepping up mask production as well, including Louis Vuitton, Prada, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent. Back in the US, Brandon Maxwell, St. John, and Michael Costello have joined Siriano by

introducing mask lines And it’s not just household names stepping up to the plate. Thousands of everyday Americans have been pulling their sewing machines out of storage and getting to work on filling this vital need. Really, the outpouring of creativity has been amazing! It’s a new normal and all designers are figuring out the proper fits and looks for this new trend, just as we’re all figuring out our own new normals in our daily lives - but whatever the style, make sure you’re doing your best to help keep yourself and others safe while still looking cute and stylish!

STAY HOME FASHION spending time indoors never looked so chic BY RENATA SANFILIPPO

ashion took an unexpected turn and famous designer collections that counted on being seeing this Spring 2020 went down the drain with this pandemic that no one ever expected. Even some of the super elaborate and exclusive fashion shows had to be streamed online or cancelled. COVID-19 left the world with no choice but to make us stay at home in our old fashion “stay home” outfits. Even though the world stopped due to social distancing and stay at home orders, fashion never stops for the creative minds, especially during crisis. Designers that are already famous will keep their clientele and adjust their brands to the new world health situation, some designers will unfortunately go out of business; but it’s interesting to see how some new designers came out of this pandemic

with “stay home” fashion: comfortable collection of shoes, clothes and accessories. They make all their marketing on social media, reaching a lot of people specially now that the population is online more than ever, creating outfits that are way more fashionable than the ones we already have at home. With soft fabrics, textures, and elasticity you can stay comfortable but still have a feeling of getting ready and dressing up at home with something new, futuristic or modern. One of my favorites stay home brands is Marine Serre; this brand took the old fashion long johns, onsei look and created a modern and futuristic look, breathable stretchy comfortable and perfect stay home during quarantine fashion choice and their even their stretchy shoes with lower heels is the

perfect choice for the ones that miss wearing heels outside the house. That being said, they are selling their collection like hot cakes while spring collections are all over the Internet, but people are not buying as much as before. I just hope that the “stay at home” fashion keeps on developing even after this pandemic because who doesn’t like to be comfortable and fashionable at home? Besides the Gucci’s, Dolce and Gabbana’s pajamas and other famous silk cashmere brands out there with simple design, there is not much left beside yoga pants and sweatpants for us to wear. Let the “stay home” fashion conquer our hearts so we can support new designers and new concepts while dressing more fashionable at home.

The year is 2020. A mystical number that many imagined to be their year. Promisses, dreams and high expectations turned into an unprecedented turmoil that might shape a new norm for the future of fashion.

s an active member of the fashion industry and community, I’ve seen firsthand what the last few months have done to it and its members. Artists, designers, models, and publications are out of work but holding onto hope, and spreading positive messages in light of the looming pandemic. But beneath the at-home face mask sewing, zoom workshops, and online sales, there are rumors brewing. Will the fashion industry change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, even long after its end? Some major industry experts believe so; but in what ways, and for how long? So I decided to dive into the world of online research to form my own opinion on the matter. On a local level I’ve seen my city (Atlanta, Georgia) impacted brutally by the virus. Hospitals are full to the brim while the streets are empty, and words like

36

| MAY 2020

“Coronavirus: isolate the elderly and chronically ill” flash across neon signs up and down the highways. Healthcare workers and hospital staff race to the frontlines to save our city’s frailest, and many of the local businesses I’ve come to love have succumbed to the economic downturn and closed their doors for good. But beneath all of that lies the heart of Atlanta’s culture; its art. I’ve seen local artists and boutique owners go under, heard of designers sewing face masks at home, and watched as photographers and entertainers have been forced not to work due to social distancing restrictions. And on a national level? The changes are even more immense. Fashion is considered a throwaway phrase by many consumers right now, something we want but don’t need, and a far cry from the essential grocery stores and hospitals running

INSIGHTS FROM AR BY KARO DELGOBBO

JULIANA SANMARTIN

São Paulo, Brazil - @julianasanmartin_oficial

We are very fortunate to say that because of our amazing partners and resellers, dealing with this adversity was made possible because of the strong bond we hold. We will focus even more in delivering a product that will last in the long run. We will treasure the safety of our team. It was very eye opening to see how, in a matter of days, life turned upside down, and it was heartwarming to see how we could rely on each other to deal with this situation. Every major event in history has changed the fashion market, and I believe this one will not be different. My perspective for the future is full of hope, and what gives me hope is the way we are adapting everything to fight COVID-19. We showcase our products every year NYC , and to see how they’re dealing with it is an amazing example of leadership and innovation that really outstands.

CAROLINA ESTEFAN

Bogotá, Colombia - @carolinaestefan

This moment of change definitely puts us in a situation where we have to reinvent part of the products of our brand. Many pieces will have to be put aside in production, making space for new styles adapted to our new reality, focusing on comfortable stay at home pieces. We are definitely reinforcing online shopping and showing our clients to get into the vibe of buying from home. There will definitely be a stage of adaptation, where the economy and social standards will be different. I feel like fashion weeks might have a turnover with a more digital approach, and the normal timing of creating big Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer Collections will change. We are uncertain of how this will happen but luxury standards are going to be affected, giving more value to clothing based on our new reality.

LISU VEGA

Miami, United States of America - @lisuvega

During the last month, I have donated two hundred masks to different places to support our local community, and I feel so grateful to be able to help others. We are more aware of the responsibility we have to help those around us. Absolutely everything changes, like the production of pieces, our work staff, even the way we create the story of our collections. We have to implement new strategies to expose our brands, and be more conscious with the fashion industry responsibility, like producing in the USA, working with sustainable art concepts and materials and to be open to support the local community.

ROUND THE GLOBE MODERN MISTRESS

Sydney, Australia - @modernmistress

The pandemic has seen a shift in our process. As such we’re utilising this period to really reflect and realign our vision, create new pieces for our loyal family of followers and bring our work back to the core of why we started creating fashion. It is naive to think the world won’t be changed by this period, especially in a field traditionally run from in person experiences. We believe that this pandemic has actually ignited what was already inevitable... A mass shift to online digital processes, and a greater worldwide focus on the online digital experience. By being forced to stay home, being presented with limited opportunity to showcase yourself through fashion, we are all going to be so thirsty for a chance to dress! It’s simply going to make us all appreciate going out dressed to the nines at every opportunity we can.

LAARDESIGN

Pula, Croatia - @laardesign

We knew that the scheduled fashions weeks would be cancelled. Stores had closed, wholesale trade was stopped, trade with Italy ceased, and all travel was not allowed. We decided to create mini collections and for the first time and present our summer collection without an audience: we will stream the runway show. The future is uncertain, and it will definitely be different. We will adapt to the situation and find a way with loyal customers, with less investments. Perhaps online shopping will have a bigger role compared to before. Each and every positive news in the media makes us happy because people are tired of social distancing and our new collection will readily wait for them. We are going to feel the consequences of Covid-19 for a long time which is why we should still be careful to keep ourselves and others safe.

AHMAD COUTURE

Delhi, India - @ahmadcouture

The India lockdown happened way earlier and that’s when everything just stood still. My work was affected badly and I had to let my employees go. I have been away from my studio in Delhi since the 2nd of March. Even how badly I want to help to give masks for charity I can’t. My hands are tied, since all factories are shut down and international couriers are not operating. My annual fashion show in Hawaii also had to be cancelled. It’s going to be a tough situation as my work is mostly all hand-embroidered with high value. Consumers are definitely going to think twice as many will go for essential items and pay their bills instead of buying garments or luxury items. The perspective for the future looks bad and scary. I think it will take one year or more to settle things. This epidemic will change a lot of things in life for sure.

rom delayed comebacks to cancelled shows and postponed productions, the Coronavirus pandemic is taking a serious toll on the Korean entertainment industry. New cases may have dropped significantly in South Korea since infection rates peaked four weeks ago, but fears of the virus have sent much of the showbiz industry into shutdown mode forcing K-pop artists to free up their tightly packed schedules and stay at home in the interests of social isolation. Although this gives them a well-deserved break from their hectic lifestyles, it also leaves them with plenty of free time. Being naturalborn entertainers, some stars have started to see social distancing as an opportunity to interact with their fans in creative ways, making self-isolation just a little bit more fun for all of us. While BTS has had to cancel or postpone concerts of their “Map of the Soul” world tour due to the pandemic, fans around the globe got to share a special experience last month as they enjoyed the group’s previous concerts together online while staying at home. Fans around the world could even enjoy the show while connecting their BTS light

sticks (known as “ARMY bombs”) to Big Hit Entertainment’s community platform WeVerse, which made their light sticks change colors based on what was going on in the concert being shown at the time. Over the two days, roughly 500,000 ARMY bombs in 162 regions were connected for the show. Many fans loved how this created a feeling that they were all experiencing the same thing and cheering on the group together, like they would at a concert. SuperM came together virtually for an eclectic performance of their song “With You” for the all-star One World: Together at Home concert on Saturday (April 18). “Even though we are miles apart from each other, we are still thankful to connect at home,” SuperM’s Ten announced before the lively performance, which found the septet participating in a wide range of activities, including drawing, weightlifting and cooking. The South Korean supergroup joined a starstudded lineup that included other at-home performances by Lady Gaga, The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Lizzo, Elton John, Billie Eilish and many more.

12 MONKEYS

MORE ACTUAL THAN WE EVER IMAGINED BY IGOR SAMPAIO

S

taying home has become our daily routine these days... Were you able to catch up with all your favorite series and shows? Have you been digging for more? Don’t get bored! In this month I won’t be talking about our fashionable movies (that we love so much), I have prepared a special list for you to binge watch and kill the tediousness. As the theme couldn’t be different for the moment we all live in, here’s my top five pandemic movies to watch while staying safe at home. Who could ever think that these would become so closer to our reality nowadays? Nevertheless, I hope they stay like that: in the movies only. Enjoy!

| MAY 2020

12 MONKEYS - 1995

Director: Terry Gilliam The movie uses its future world as a home base and launch pad as the central story, which is set in 1990 and 1996. It is about a time traveler trying to save the world from a deadly plague. After the death of 5 billion people during a plague in the 90’s, the protagonist played by Bruce Willis is sent on a surface expedition by the rulers of this domain, who hope to learn enough about the virus and defeat it. Willis really demonstrates why he has endured such a long career; he is utterly charismatic on-screen. But maybe Brad Pitt is the oddball in this film, receiving an Oscar nomination that he has very well deserved. Pitt constantly risks overdoing it, pushing his crazy performance as far as he can. With a

pair of talented actors, science fiction and a story with a good dose of mystery, this is one of the best films of the genre.

BLINDNESS - 2008

Director: Fernando Meirelles A thriller and adaptation of the 1995 novel of the same name by Portuguese author José Saramago about a society suffering an epidemic of blindness. Kudos to the director for the clever way his characters go blind and the way he plays around with light. This film divided not only the public but many film critics as well mainly due to its unusual photography and direction. Nevertheless, it is a film that takes us out of our comfort zone and that somehow impacts the viewer. Let me know what you think about it! I personally highly recommend it.

BLINDNESS

12 MONKEYS

28 DAYS LATER

FLU

CONTAGION - 2011

Director: Steven Soderbergh Perhaps the most interesting and frightening in this film is the similarity of circumstances with the current moment in which the world lives. The story is very similar to what is happening with COVID-10, leading the viewer to reflect on its own experience in the real world. In an unpretentious way, the film also serves as reflection for ourselves. The movie included an ensemble cast of Hollywood stars: Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, and Marion Cotillard. It focused on a flu virus called MEV-1, which originated in Hong Kong and quickly spreads across the world killing millions and causing an apocalyptic-like existence for those still alive. As the Coronavirus began to spread in January, the movie title spiked on Google Trends. Warner Bros. announced that Contagion was only behind the Harry Potter franchise as the most on-demand title - it was previously the studio’s 270th most popular back in December 2019. And currently, the movie has been in the top ten for weeks!

CONTAGION

28 DAYS LATER - 2002

Director: Danny Boile The plot of this post-apocalyptic horror film depicts the breakdown of society following the accidental release of a highly contagious virus. After breaking into a primate research facility, a group of animal rights activists discover caged chimps chained up before banks of screens displaying horrifying, violent images. Ignoring the warnings of the terrified researcher who affirms that the chimps are infected, they begin to free the animals and are immediately subjected to a bloody attack from the enraged creatures. Twenty-eight days later, Jim awakes from a coma in the deserted intensive care unit of a London hospital. Back in 2002, watching London’s streets empty at screen was completely unexpected and virtually a sci-fi movie. But now in 2020, those images against the real quarantine, give us a feeling of living in a movie story. It’s an interesting movie once we understand the leading actor’s viewpoint and experience distressing feelings. The images of a wasted London and the details of a

paramilitary organization in the countryside are both creepy and persuasive, but what also makes 28 Days Later effective and sets it apart from other thrillers, is that it makes you care about the characters.

FLU - 2013

Director: Kim Sung-su Straight from South Korea, this film has a simple and standard synopsis written and directed by Kim Sung-su: An outbreak of a deadly strain of H5N1 that kills its victims within 36 hours, throwing the district of Bundang in Seongnam, which has a population of nearly half a million people, into pure chaos. The strengths of the film are definitely its capacity to deliver a transfusion of harrowing realism, government duplicity and dripping sentimentality. Fully conveying the sudden and unpreventable nature of modern pandemics like SARS, Kim Sung-soo builds white-knuckle tension from images of mass panic. But the story flatlines as the crisis escalates, falling prey to pedestrian human drama and improbable conspiracy subplots. You will not get disappointed.

cle Touch treatments by Renata França, who Vieira calls “the massage queen” and that transformed her life and career. The Brazilian massage therapist offers a multitude of other services as well to get help you feel your best from head-to-toe. “My clients normally come in asking for lymphatic drainage massages, which is a combination of deeper strokes to release the tissue, increased metabolism and promotion of contouring while also delivering relaxation“, says Vieira. Once you’ve booked an appointment with Vieira, she recommends keeping your choices clean: “Have something light like a salad, chicken or fish and avoid alcohol. “

Next, sit back and relax with body massages with a caffeine-infused lotion from Brazil to help speed up circulation and prevent cellulite. “I take my client’s personal needs into account when they come in. The massage is almost the same for everyone, but some people are looking for more of a focus on the belly or the arms. I think it has become so popular because there isn’t a massage like it anywhere else”, she says. After your two-hour long treatment is done - feeling better from the inside out is bound to happen. “My clients say that I have good hands and that they feel lighter and happier after session”, Anna explains.
