ECEMBER IS AN INCREDIBLY SPECIAL MOMENT IN OUR lives, despite being a year full of challenges. The pandemic changed businesses and human relationships, Black Lives Matter made governments and corporations further discuss social, inclusion, and diversity matters. The US elections demonstrated how separate the country is. Fashion shows are still keeping the phygital format, streaming makes much more accessible and democratic, but still unexciting at least to my eyes. The vaccine sheds some light upon us. Nevertheless, December is a month to gather our close family and celebrate life. Despite the scars of concern, future uncertainty, remembrance of those who left too soon, misinformation, selfishness... but yet deep inside, our souls are full of hope for a new beginning.

We started one year ago not sure exactly where we were stepping into, and the pandemic hit the US a couple of months later. However, I am extremely proud of our ability to get a team of passionate professionals together, create fashion editorials with no preconceptions, and give everyone the exposure they deserve, within our own limitations and weaknesses. We had many moments of joy and also many tough critics hard to swallow. But in the end, all I can say is that it was worth it. I dedicate this issue to you, dear reader, and to each one of our collaborators. Happy birthday AVESSA, happy new year!

AN OPTICAL ILLUSION Symbolism and colors bringing consciousness and cultural coexistence BY KARO DELGOBBO

T

HE THREEASFOUR TRIO, ADI GIL, ANGE DONhauser, and Gabi Asfour payed a tribute to the plant world in their new 2021 spring collection, linking sacred geometry with nature and God. Symbolizing protection, power and good health, the collection is based on Vesica Piscis, an almond shape made by the intersection of two circles, and is also called Womb of All Creation and the Eye of Horus. “For our new type of reality, it’s the perfect theme” Asfour said. They produced a collection that balances their artistic and experimental tendencies with more wearable ones, from the almond shape three-dimensional to the easy-to-wear tunics and leggings. The digital prints were made in collaboration with a Japanese company named Mimaki, making everything look unique and artistic.

NO BOUNDARIES Lenny Niemeyer brings her new collection in the digital format to São Paulo Fashion Week BY KARO DELGOBBO

F

OR LENNY, THE GREATEST CHALLENGES WERE THE DIRECT IMpact of the pandemic: suppliers and the digitization of the show, an unprecedented sensation. The Summer 2021 narrative began with an experimental photo session, in which natural and lush flowers are photographed with reflective plastics. The result of this work was the starting point for the construction of the collection. “Digital and analog interpose and are indissoluble. It no longer makes sense to separate them”, says Lenny. The contrast between petals and plastic is almost complementary: one element balances the other. The femininity of the flowers is amplified by the luminosity and iridescence of the reflective surfaces. And in this same dialogue in which forms are sometimes rigid and architectural, sometimes fluid and feminine, analog prints gain surreal collages, mixing fabrics, textures and bodies, in contrast to flowers and plastics.

SILENCE AND POETRY A spiritual message of action, beauty and imperfection BY FLÁVIO IRYODA

J

AKARTA FASHION WEEK WAS ALL DIGITAL THIS year and that’s no news in the world of runway nowadays, but at the final closing event, Lulu Lufti Labibi translated the pandemic into a narrative story of literacy and literature. The Yogyakarta-based designer continues its signature: deconstructed handwoven lurik techniques that are modern, highly versatile, and tell us a story in each piece. The Wabi-Sabi philosophy, a traditional Japanese aesthetics that is centered in the appreciation of imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete beauty is always applied in the work process. Instead of working with new fabric, Lulu used old fabrics kept for years and came up with “Clothing, Moment in Silence and Poetry”, borrowing a few lines from indonesian poet Joko Pinurbo to convey a spiritual message of action for our moment.

34

| DECEMBER 2020

“The cutting and the visuals of the collection return to basics, but in an appealing way. As a reminder of our struggle in this difficult time, a piece of poetry will be hidden in the pocket linings,” Lulu explained. Joko Pinurbo’s poetry is the first foundation, Lulu interprets it as a means of reflection, a way to go back into oneself. Poetry is also a medium to delve deeper into the mystery behind everyday events. Lulu also focuses on going back to the simple, simple and basic cutting pattern, for meditation, prayer, work, and everyday errands. “Tubuhku kenangan yang sedang menyembuhkan lukanya sendiri” My body is a memory healing its own wounds “Kebahagiaan saya terbuat dari kesedihan yang sudah merdeka” My happiness is made of sorrow that has set loose - Joko Pinurbo

THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON

TOTON’s ethereal SS21 collection reminds the world to reflect and and return to our own beliefs BY FLÁVIO IRYODA

S

PIRITUAL BELIEFS ARE OFTEN THE MAIN SHELTER OF HUMAN BEINGS when faced with difficult times. A time full of uncertainty also drives us to look into the self further away. TOTON brings its SS21 collection to reflect through Indonesian beliefs. As a nation with such cultural diversity, Indonesia also has its history of the rich spiritual realm. One aspect that inspired TOTON’s collection is Hindu and Buddhist relics, not only as a religious symbol but also as prayer and hope. Handmade paper clay shields similar to sculpture carvings are matched Aceh and South Sulawesi dresses. TOTON also jumped into the sustainability boat, repurposing materials from past collections, including neoprene from SS16, lace motif shell from SS17, stripes from FW17, pleats from FW18 and embroidered organza material and wood carving accessories from most recent collections. Bottom line, the entire collection only uses materials that were available in the studio.

NATIVE INDIGENOUS TRIBE-BORN FROM THE Brazilian Amazon, located north of Brazil by the border of Peru and Colombia, where you would take 7 days by boat from the main city of the state. It’s not every day that we see the majesty of an original collection true to its tradition, heart, and soul. We’e’ena came to the capital at 12 years old without knowing the official language of the country to live in an urban community of the Tikuna in Manaus, capital of the Amazonas state, where much of the traditions and rituals are still preserved at this date. She embodied the Tikuna spirit, where all are born with art and fashion as their identity. Years later, she took it the next step, showing the richness of her culture, without the steering of a middle man, directly to us at its most pure, raw, and original manner. She has chosen the sacred fabric tururi as the foundation for her garments, a type of natural fiber that can only be retrieved by men, commonly used for ritual masks, bed clothing, and even as pads for feminine care. Her looks are true to her ancestors, representing different Tikuna clans, their culture, rituals, and beliefs. For example, the model on the far right represents the father of the wind and the close connection of its people with nature. The main look in the middle pays homage to the young girl ritual, always in red and adorned with goose and macaw feathers, it connects to a very sacred moment in a girl’s life: her first period, where the Tikuna girl is isolated for some time to better understand their body transformation and to be more aware on how to turn into a woman. I had the opportunity not only to enjoy her show but to talk to her a little more about her brand, her collection, the materials used, and the importance of showing a beautiful yet much-forgotten and discriminated culture to the world.

WE’E’NA, WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS COLLECTION PRESENTED AT BRASIL ECO FASHION WEEK? In this edition, I took to the runway “NHO’É”, which represents the spirit of the trees, the fashion of my Tikuna people, which is one of the largest indigenous nations in the Amazon and Brazil. For the show, I used Tikuna graphism, representing animals of heaven and earth. The Tikuna people are known for their clans and their art and face paintings, represented by symbols of animals, body graphics are shown in the clothing of masked men, which are fabrics made of tururi, which is a type of wood fiber. The indigenous graphics go beyond the desire for beauty, and it is a complex code of communication, which for us, indigenous people, represents our culture and tradition. I create looking at our ancestry but also looking at our future. YOU CREATED THE FIRST BRAZILIAN BRAND FOUNDED BY A NATIVE INDIAN. As I live in the city, I cannot have my body painted at all times. I suffered much bullying and prejudice in the city with my body paintings and my native clothes. Overcoming all of that, my brand was born. The We’e’ena Tikuna brand was born out of racism, from not knowing the true history of the Brazilian indigenous people, it is a response to all forms of prejudice against us the original nations. It is the first contemporary Indian fashion brand designed by a native Indian. For many years, we were tutored by seconds and thirds, and today we are the protagonists of our history. It is our turn now to show all our abilities.

TARTAN

EXPLOSION! Plaid always comes back from the ashes as soon as the calendar hits October then blooms in December, and because this is our party issue, my recommendation is to dress yourself up in an outfit that makes new year’s fireworks look lackluster. This is a tartan extravaganza! BY JUANITA CRARY

HENEVER I SEE PLAID FOUR THINGS come to my mind: school uniforms, Scotts, grunge, and Christmas. The latter my least favorite of them all, but who am I to judge on looks when part of my speech is that anyone can look fabulous in anything styled correctly? Another one of my rules is that more is more, sorry minimalists, but in this column, you’ll witness a lot of color, patterns, and creativity. The idea is to channel your inner Elsa Schiappareli instead of me giving you boring advice for normal every day looks. 2020 has been a year that many will remember and not necessarily because of how fabulous it was. I don’t even have to get into details about the events that have made a survival experience out of the past months, we’ve all been there in different scenarios. But the holidays are here, and it seems like it’s almost impossible to repress the urge of celebrating and being festive. I am the greenest, most bitter Grinch of all. I really am not a big fan of December festivities, but I understand the need to cherish that we’re still here, struggling and trying to adjust to what some call “the new normal”.

TIME LIVES THE

We imagined, created, and made it. We managed to conquer a year with so many experiences that it seems like yesterday that everything started. It gave us the foundations to dare even more from now on, and to seek and provide state-of-the-art information with the impetus that only revolutionaries can achieve. A revolution through fashion, global collaborative action, open to new talents and voices. BY IGOR SAMPAIO

HE FIRST YEAR OF OUR CHILDHOOD LIVES IS WITHOUT a doubt, the most challenging and insecure moment that any parent can have. It is a special period where incredible events happen every day, and fear and joy go hand in hand. After all, allowing someone so special, conceived by you, to begin discovering a world so diverse, dangerous, and catastrophic is an intense exercise of courage, love, and dedication. We could be talking about our children, who are parts of ourselves, but when writing about the first year of AVESSA Magazine, the feeling of parenthood is much present. Like our children, AVESSA is the fruit of the heart, soul, and sleepless nights of each team member, who imprint a little bit of their DNA on its pages every month. The conception was not

easy, and there was (or there is still) a time when butterflies in our stomach and heartbeats were almost impossible to ignore. We did not know why, but something was saying that this time it would be different. It would not be only words, but real actions to embark into a new journey once and for all. A point of no return that we have always wished and dreamed of. We felt that it was finally the time for our deepest dreams to mature and come into fruition, and our still shy confidence needed to emerge. Over time, we became aware that our job was to let these ideas flow free and loose, and that there was a world desperate for this type of information. Less commercial, more focused on what fashion was no matter what. A world that needed to know us.

2020 WAS A UNIQUE AND VERY CHALLENGING YEAR AND I THINK ALL OF US HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR 2021. BUT WHAT THE STARS TELL US ABOUT 2021? 2020 didn’t go our way and it’s natural for us to expect and hope for a pleasant new year. The outbreak of a pandemic made it worse for the economy and business. In 2020, the movement of shadow planets Rahu and Ketu had a strong influence, which caused the pandemic and fueled its spread around the world. Also, planets including Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Rahu went retrograde as well. This had adverse effects on individuals, businesses, and countries’ financial systems. 2021 brings good news for all zodiac signs. All the barriers and stumbling blocks will likely start disappearing and your spirit will be free of all the restrictions. You will have numerous opportunities to develop your personal or professional skills. Saturn and Jupiter will favor all zodiac signs in general, allowing you to start things that are beneficial for you in the long run.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS WE SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT? Being able to use your brain, wit, and charm and working with others is important to you. You should avoid working alone and be a part of a team or a larger network. This is the time to adopt rather prudent or conservative strategies. The money will not fall out of the sky following a lottery win, but through work, productivity, and inventiveness. Although you have no reason to be tight on money, you need to manage carefully and smartly your income and expenses budget. In 2021 meditation and grounding practices will help you develop balance. Natural calamities, war or emergency like situation, recession, closure of multiple industries, the collapse of economies, may be faced by some of the African countries. Jupiter transiting its debilitated sign is good for religious activities but justice will be denied for many deserving people. Few tyrant governments may try to suppress popular voices that go against their decisions. Corruption will continue to haunt all major countries in all departments.

Do your best to be organized and productive. You must also draw upon your willpower and self-discipline. Think long and hard before re-starting an old romance from October to December. Allow your beloved to give to you (whether that’s in the material or spiritual realm,) and at the same time, make sure that you are doing your fair share of giving to the relationship. If you are unattached but looking, you are likely to meet someone new who is positive, kind, and generous. Favorable Dates: 3, 4, 12, 17, 21, 27. Favorable Colors: Blue & White.

in the spotlight

WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE TO GROW UP IN SUCH A WELL KNOWN REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT FAMILY? Growing up in the industry was a great education. My father invested so much energy into building this community. As I have grown the mall, started work on mixed-use projects and expanded into other areas like Nashville, he’s still one of the people I turn to for input. TALK TO US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR VISION FOR BRINGING THE LUXURY MARKET TO AVENTURA MALL Aventura Mall is an exceptional place and we have always focused on making the customer experience immersive and special. Luxury was an obvious category to add to roundout our offering. And consumers shop for luxury differently than they did even a generation ago – there’s a customer who shops at Gucci and then heads to H&M. So, Aventura Mall has become a destination for luxury shopping with great brands like Cartier, FENDI, Gucci and soon, Hermes. That is complemented by amazing dining concepts, contemporary brands and immersive experiences for families. ONE OF YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS WAS TO BRING LOUIS VUITTON TO AVENTURA MALL. HOW DIFFICULT WAS THIS PROCESS? Every negotiation brings with it, its own challenges. It doesn’t matter who the tenant is. You need to understand their needs, their goals and then be prepared to show how Aventura Mall can meet them. Louis Vuitton saw the value that having a presence at Aventura Mall would bring and we are thrilled to have them. They are great partners. WE KNOW YOU ARE WELL KNOWN FOR YOUR CHARITABLE WORK. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS? Supporting our communities is at the heart of everything Turnberry does. For more than 50 years, Turnberry has enhanced the lives of our residents, whether that’s creating a world-class destination or serving the community at large. Our philanthropic and employee engagement programs continue to advance and amplify the vital work of nonprofit entities. We provide support for leading healthcare institutions, children’s welfare services, animal advocacy organizations and providers that meet the urgent needs of underserved communities. We’ve also mobilized and offered responsive support during times of crisis and natural disasters, such as hurricanes impacting our region and other areas. Over the years, we have been proud to work with The University of Miami Health System, Best Buddies International, The Seed School of Miami, Humane Society of

Greater Miami North, Feeding South Florida, The Salvation Army and many more. AS ONE OF THE TOP LEADERS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, WHAT IS YOUR METHOD FOR LEADING A GROUP OF EXECUTIVES? Collaboration is the key to success. Having the right team and trusting your team is essential. I listen a lot. I make sure I am getting lots of input and try to lead by drawing on the deep expertise around the table. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN AVENTURA MALL CHANGED IN RECENT YEARS? Over the years, it’s been thrilling to watch the continued expansion and growth of the Aventura Mall. The growth hasn’t just been in sheer size of stores and consumers. The diversity of the experience has enhanced and expanded overtime. Shoppers are looking for experiences and that’s what we aim to provide. Aventura Mall is the most successful in the US because it offers an incredible experience for visitors, including the best in retail, food and culture including a museum-quality art collection. The attached release details the exceptional offering that makes the center so successful. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW THAT YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND, CRAIG ROBINS, ARE DEFINING THE FUTURE OF LUXURY IN SOUTH FLORIDA? We’re both working on developing projects that we believe in and that enrich our communities through commerce, cultural experiences and more. We both care deeply about making our communities stronger and more vibrant and that’s great. HAVE YOU ENVISIONED ANOTHER “FIRST” FOR SOUTH FLORIDA? Right now, I am working on another project with LeFrak which is both revitalizing a part of North Miami and bringing innovative development to the forefront. It is called Solé Mia. It is an 184-acre project with plans for 12 residential towers, 500,000 square feet of retail and commercial space all anchored around Laguna Solé, South Florida’s first 7-acre swimmable Crystal Lagoon. IS THERE A BOOK ON THE LIFE OF JACKIE SOFFER IN YOUR FUTURE? I am not thinking about a book on my life right now. I am more focused on living it. I’ve gotten a business to run, a family to take care of. My days are full.

O

N AUGUST 8TH, 2020, RIGHT AFTER THE Miss Earth Tokyo 2020 pageant, seven contestants fatefully went out to eat. None of them had won and there was a mutual feeling of frustration and a feeling of not knowing what to do now. No one wanted to simply go back to their daily routine. They had all worked so hard and had a newfound passion to help the environment, and of course they could spread awareness on their own but deep down they all knew that the fire would eventually fade on its own. Unless they did it together... Once the idea of forming a group and spreading environmental awareness together came up, right then and there they created a name and an Instagram account. They started making plans for a photoshoot so they could formally introduce

each member on social media. Until Miss Earth Tokyo 2021, all seven of them have the title of 2020 finalists so this year would be a year of experimenting and testing to see what works for the seven of them as they all have to balance their jobs as well. The hope and the goal is turn this into a business after one year. Although it has only been four months since the start, they have been able to consistently host two events per month, one that is a monthly trash pick-up event and one collaborative event with a WOE member sharing about their area of interest. But enough about the beginning as it has only be a few months, here’s more about each of the members, what 2020 was like for them and what they’re looking forward to in the new year!

MIYUKI KUDO

工藤みゆき – SCORPIO

A

S A DESIGNER WHO CREATES THINGS, she feels strongly the responsibility to use the earths resources sustainably. The resources provided to us by the earth are limited and this has inspired her to take the environment more seriously. Miyuki is an interior designer who specialized is offices and show rooms. She loves to read manga and has read over 20 books in one day before. She has also spent a week cycling from Tokyo to Osaka. From her cycling adventures, she has seen how beautiful the nature in Japan can be. However, Japan is also a country with many natural disasters. During both the 2011 earthquake disaster in eastern Japan and the typhoon that hit Chiba last year, Miyuki volunteered her time to help the efforts. She learned that something so beautiful and majestic could also be just as destructive and that nature is to be respected and protected. Miyuki’s 2020 was a year of resolution. She participated in Miss Earth Tokyo in 2019 and 2020 and was first runner up both years. This left her feeling incredibly frustrated as she was so close to winning both years, but she has turned that feeling of frustration into motivation for WOE. This years frustration is next years passion. By meeting the other WOE members, she has a newfound determination and a new project to work towards. I personally love how Miyuki describes WOE. She thinks of WOE as the Avengers. Each member has their own area of interest and passion but we all come together as a stronger group to help support each other’s goals and realize them in a bigger way.

NANAMI KANEKO 金子菜々美 – LEO

N

ANAMI WORKS AS A NARRATOR AND HAS THE MOST calming speaking voice. She came up with little catch phrases for all the members so people could easily remember each member. Her interest in the environment started when she was chosen as a finalist for Miss Earth Tokyo 2020. During the week of beauty training, she learned about the how must trash and waste there is on the earth and how that causes water pollution. She became aware of just how much people litter and decided to do something about it. Through WOE, she has organized the monthly trash pick-up event in her hometown of Asakusa, Tokyo called Asakusa Clean Up. She hopes that when people see her and others picking up litter, it will inspire them to dispose of their trash properly. Another area she is passionate about is food waste. She has taken up an interest in learning how to ferment foods herself and is currently studying to become a certified fermented foods sommelier. Once she becomes certified, she hopes to host an event

through WOE where she can teach others how to properly ferment their own food. 2020 has also been a year of growth for Nanami. By becoming a Miss Earth Tokyo 2020 finalist, she had to take a good look at herself where she began the process of learning more about herself. She now takes self-care more seriously and a goal of hers for 2021 is to make more time for herself in the morning as she loves watching the sunrise. The biggest thing she has learned in 2020 is that nothing begins without action. If she never applied for Miss Earth Tokyo 2020, she never would have gained her newfound confidence or met the other WOE members. If no one decided to go anything about the idea of starting a group, WOE never would have happened. This has inspired her to not overthink as much and to take more actions towards her goals. She is excited for what 2021 has to bring and wishes you all a wonderful 2021 filled with health and happiness!

ERIKA ISHIBASHI 石橋恵莉加 – ARIES

L

IKE MANY OTHERS, 2020 WAS A YEAR where Erika grew in many ways. Competing in Miss Earth Tokyo 2020 was not something she intended to do but with the push of her older sister Lisa Opie, she decided to go for it. Erika’s biggest insecurity is the eczema that she has struggled with since birth. She never wanted to talk about it and has always kept it hidden but with bikini part of the competition, hiding it really wasn’t an option. She came to terms with the fact that everyone watching would see how bad her skin was. Eczema is a very common chronic skin condition that isn’t talked about as much as it should be and she decided to start that conversation. No longer afraid to open up about her struggles, she has become a strong advocate for skin positivity. The only thing she is more passionate about than skin positivity is veganism. She started a vegan diet five years ago hoping to reduce the eczema but while doing the research, she learned that it was much more than just a diet. She made the ethical and moral choice to no longer consume animal products. Choosing to vote with her money, she chooses compassion for animals and the environment with every meal. Since moving to Tokyo a year ago, she has been spreading her vegan message in Japan and has hosted a vegan cookie decorating event through WOE. In 2021, she hopes to be able to reach more people through WOE about skin positivity and veganism. Erika feels extremely lucky and blessed to have met the other WOE members and to be a part of this group of motivated young women. She also wants everyone to know that we all made it through 2020 and we should be proud. The most important thing we can do it continue to educate and better ourselves, take care of both our mental and physical health, and to go into 2021 excited about what the new year has in store for all of us.

WAKAKO YAMANA

山名和花子 – SCORPIO

W

AKAKO LOVES TO TRAVEL AND through her travels, she has seen firsthand the discrimination the lower class of developing countries can experience. She’s very passionate about creating a fair and just world where everyone is equal regardless of their background. It saddens her that so many things about a persons life can be decided just from which class or country they were born into and aspires to become a voice for those who don’t have one. As someone who struggles with confidence herself, she hopes to gain confidence through helping those around her gain confidence as well. Even though 2020 was hard, she is proud of herself for being able to adapt and move on. She can tell that she has grown and will continue to do so throughout 2021. She loves meeting new people and is excited to see how she herself will grow and hopes to contribute to WOE in any way she can. She encourages you to challenge yourself because you’d be surprised to find out just how much you can do with a single small step.

S

AYO WORKS AS A NURSE IN A LOCAL gynecologists office. She has seen many young women with cervical cancer lose their battle and knows that the number of women with cervical cancer is on the rise. Wanting to spread awareness on this issue, she decided to apply for Miss Earth Tokyo 2020. Through WOE, she wants to continue to shed light onto women’s reproductive health and the importance of it because we cannot care for others if we do not take care of ourselves first. One of Sayo’s hobbies is photography and she has taken on the role of organizing the WOE Instagram. She has expressed before that she wants to use her photography to show the state of the environment which will hopefully encourage people to take action. For example, on our monthly trash pick-up sessions, she likes to take artistic pictures of the trash before it is picked up to bring awareness to the litter problem in an artistic and modern way. 2020 for Sayo was one of identity. Like many of the other members, she was able to grow though Miss Earth Tokyo. Aside from learning more about herself, she has learned the importance of consistent action. Although it may not seem like you’re going anywhere, small actions will turn into something big. She has big hopes for 2021 as she plans to attend graduate school and wants to keep the momentum from 2020 going into 2021. From Tokyo, Japan, she wants to remind you that only you are in charge of your life, and to always make conscious choices.

NANA OTA

太田奈那 – AQUARIUS

N

ANA BEGAN HER ENVIRONMENTAL journey when she watched a documentary about fast fashion. She’s always loved fashion and was shocked to see how much pollution and harm these fashion brands and companies were causing to not only the environment but to women and children as well. She then realized the power she has as a consumer and decided to use that power to purchase from ethical and sustainable brands. From fashion to food, she encourages those around her to pay attention to where the foods we eat and the clothes we wear come from. Nana is also an amazing raw sweets cook and through WOE, has already hosted two raw dessert lessons where she taught the participants how to make raw vegan doughnuts and raw vegan pumpkin tarts. All the ingredients she uses are from sustainable brands and it’s amazing to see her spread her love for the environment through something everyone can get onboard with: desserts! Her goals for 2021 include gathering more supporters for WOE as well as raising money to donate to animal sanctuaries. She feels that everything started when she applied for Miss Earth Tokyo 2020. Even though she only had a small amount of interest in pageants, she is very glad she did it and is thankful that she was able to meet people with similar interests. Even though you are only slightly interested in something, it is still worth going for.

ULALA MIKAMI 三上麗 – VIRGO

D

URING THE BEGINNING OF QUARANTINE, ULALA started a YouTube channel as a way to kill time. Little did she know that her side hobby would turn into something more. Her niche of sex education is a rare one in Japan and it is something that needs to be talked about more. It all started when she was sexually assaulted in high school. She had always heard about these stories and knew about the #metoo movement but she didn’t give it much thought because she had never experienced anything like it before, but after experiencing it firsthand, she knew that it was her problem too. Through this, she realized that other peoples’ problems are her problems too. Of course it is easier to become an advocate for something you have experienced yourself but that doesn’t mean you can’t care or educate yourself on other societal problems. It is important to have compassion because we are all connected in some way or another. She uses her platform to educate young teenagers about safe sex and has recently grown an interest in educating young girls about their periods as periods can still be a bit of a taboo subject in Japan. She has started a project to develop a First Time Period Kit that has everything a young girl needs to prepare for her first period. It even comes with a menstrual cup which is a very sustainable but lesser known feminine product.

102

| DECEMBER 2020

She knows that Japan is a little behind when it comes to sex ed and can become discouraged knowing that there is still a long way to go but she is determined to use her experience and platform to explicitly speak to her young Japanese audience so that she can prevent others from going through what she did. As for the environment, she actively tries to reduce the amount of trash she throws out. She learned that Japan was the fifth country in the world that threw away the most plastic trash and wanted to do her part to lessen the amount of trash thrown away. For example, she doesn’t buy paper towels or napkins or anything that in thrown away after one use and has opted for cloth towels to wipe up spills and messes. She says that we have to be proactive in protecting the environment because the environment can’t cry or become angry or show emotion like us humans can. Ignoring the environment is just the same as ignoring another fellow human being’s problems. 2020 for Ulala has been challenging as it has been for most Women ofabout the Earth onand Instagram of us butFollow she positive 2021 hopesatto finally launch @women_oftheearth and visit their website at her Period Kit. She plans to continue her YouTube channel womenontheearth202.wixsite.com/womenoftheearth. hoping to reach more people with her story and will also continue to educate and grow herself as she someday would like to do a collaborative event with WOE.

sustainable is the new black

FROM TRASH TO FASHION BY ELIZABETH TRAN

I

N A CONSUMER-DRIVEN INdustry, waste is an out-of-sight, out-of-mind concept. In reality, waste is a tangible asset that was once an integral part of a product. Waste includes but is not limited to packaging, single-use materials, and unwanted scraps of food. As society continues to shift towards more sustainable practices, so is the fashion world. Repurposing and manipulating waste materials into textiles is one niche approach to sustainable fashion. Sustainable fashion can also be made of organic and natural materials, locally sourced, or re-used from discarded garments. While there is yet to be an official standard for eco-fashion, Red Carpet Green Dress, the exclusive sustainable fashion partner for The Academy Awards has one of the most extensive criteria in the industry. Trash fashion initially started as a way to track my garbage inventory but became the most recognizable way for me to promote a minimal waste lifestyle. In 2008, I started my non-profit organization Teens Go Green to encourage all ages to volunteer and help the environment. Over the years, it has become most notable for the trash fashion pieces volunteers create for fashion shows. Dresses and jewelry made with pieces that would have otherwise been thrown away give garbage a new sense of value. The majority of my pieces come from packages through mail and food items. Even when I am trying to eliminate plastic by keeping reusable bags in my car for groceries and shopping, I still accumulate a collection of sticker labels on my fruits. On one hand, packaging is beneficial for the branding and mar-

keting of a product. However, is it worth compromising long term waste? Trash fashion limits the ways you can make an outfit or accessory, opening possibilities for creative approaches outside of traditional garment making. I have secured many of my pieces with velcro, tape, or strings made from braided plastic bags. Using materials like old CDs, soda cans, or sturdy bottles require heavy-duty scissors to cut precisely. Creating trash fashion can fall in line with costume pieces, based on the tools required. In fact, sewing can be limited depending on what materials are used. Trash fashion has the hand-made, one-of-a-kind custom designs that cannot be mass-produced, but uses the most unwanted materials in our society. Trash fashion does not “fit into a luxury fashion pyramid, but adds art and beauty to garbage. Everything in life has value and can serve more than one purpose. Resource depletion and excessive waste production is an ongoing problem, and one of the best ways to spread awareness is through trash fashion. In this outfit, I made a trapeze dress out of large bubble wrap. I popped the top three rows of bubbles to ruche on top and used extra material to create a bow and braided strap. The white criss-cross pieces were foam covers for apples opened into flower shapes on the top of the dress and as bows in the accessory pieces. Last but not least, sticker labels from Chiquita bananas were cut and centered around accessories, dress pieces, and placed throughout my face.

THE

WONDERFUL

WORLD OF

HATS BY MONICA MATARAZZO

G

RANDMA IZAURA DEMARI, OUR SENIOR INFLUENCER, delights us this month with one of her many loved fashion accessories: a sneak peek of her 780 hats collection. It’s a definitive trademark in her day-to-day life. The 79-years old-model continually researches and mines different pieces for her steadily growing collection. Some were acquired during trips around the world, at thrift stores that sell renowned brands, and often at places that no one cares about; others were made and decorated by her son, Marcio Demari. “There is no need to dress like everyone else. It’s so much more fun to create your own look”, says Grandma Izaura. Thus, our friend hat, beret, or cap, has had and continues to have its evolution in history. Coco Chanel, around 1909, began to make her name in the fashion world by opening her hat shop, where she developed new creations; after a while, her style was gradually spread and appreciated more and more in the world of haute couture. Carmen Miranda, the iconic Brazilian singer and the highest paid actress in Hollywood in the mid-1940s introduced a brand new look to the US inspired by the “Baianas”, AfroBrazilian women during colonial times. Her highly decorated turbans will be remembered forever. Now go ahead and make a good use of this underrated fashion accessory that can change and redefine your style, and dare to be like Grandma Izaura, the unforgettable Carmen Miranda, or the mother of fashion Coco Chanel.

S

ÃO PAULO IS A CITY OF NUMBERS. THERE ARE more than 12 million habitants living in the city and more than 21 million in the larger metro area. Ranked as the fourth or fifth most populous metro area in the world (depending on the source), it is definitely a multifaceted, contemporary and busy metropolis. While it is the most important financial center in the country, it is the capital of culture in Latin America, offering unique options of leisure, knowledge and entertainment. As your typical urban metropolis, you’ll be surrounded by concrete but it also shares a significant public green area. It is an avant-garde and innovative city founded back in 1554 that continues to preserve in its architecture, arts, and gastronomy a past composed by the union of more than 70 nationalities. While preserving traditions, it does not allow itself to be surpassed: tuned in might be a better word to describe it. To get to better know the city, it only takes two things: an open mind and the willingness to immerse and experience everything that this unique city has to offer. São Paulo hosts the most influential fashion event in Latin America: São Paulo Fashion Week, considered by many as the fifth show after Paris, Milan, New York and London. It is the main destination for shopping tourism in the country, ranging from luxurious options and super accessible shopping centers. There are more than 50 shopping malls and around 60 thematic shopping streets. One of the most charming addresses in São Paulo is Oscar Freire street. You will find more than 200 stores of renowned national and international brands. If the intention is to guarantee good bargains, head to 25 de Março street, the largest popular open-air commercial conglomerate in Latin America, with more than three thousand stores.

The world of arts and entertainment boils in São Paulo. Cultural center of Latin America, São Paulo has 101 museums, 282 movie theaters, 146 libraries and about 40 cultural centers, in addition to the countless popular festivals and fairs that take place on its streets. In addition, the city has 182 theaters, spaces for the gathering of shows from a broad artistic spectrum, ranging from the large Broadway musical productions to avant-garde and popular performances. Even though it is a predominantly urban metropolis, the capital of the state (also named São Paulo) preserves areas of contact with nature, where it is possible to escape from the busy city life, enjoy the outdoors and exercise. There are 111 parks spread throughout the city, such as Ibirapuera park, the largest and most visited urban park in Latin America, inspired by modern drafts from the acclaimed architect Roberto Burle Marx. When it comes to gastronomy, you won’t be disappointed at all: it is very contemporary, rich and diverse. The city gathers some of the best cuisines in Latin America and the world, among its more than 15 thousand restaurants and 20 thousand bars, ranging from national and international options and catered to all pockets. In addition to more than 50 different cuisines, São Paulo is famous for food trucks and gastronomic fairs, which now take over the city streets. The nightlife is a faithful portrait of the city: frantic, creative, and democratic. It welcomes everyone, from country, R&B, rock, samba and bossa nova, to electronic music, pop and forró (a traditional style rooted in the northeast of the country). Vila Madalena, Itaim Bibi, Vila Olímpia, Centro and Barra Funda are some of the most frequented neighborhoods for those who like to enjoy the night scene: there’s always something going on at any day and point in time, even during weekdays. São Paulo does not sleep and will not disappoint you.

GUILHOTINA BAR Opened in the end of 2016 at the Baixo Pinheiros region, it’s a destination for guaranteed fun. Above everything, it focuses on Brazilian hospitality and of course on quality, where some of the best cocktails in the city are found (and perhaps in the world), having been recognized in 2019 as the 15th best bar on the planet by the 50 Best Bars ranking. Created from a local residential house and brought into a modern, hipster decoration with exposed brick walls, high ceilings, couches, high tables, a winter garden, an amazing 8 meters long bar and lots of green, elevating its Brazilian tropical vibe. The cocktails list contains many exclusive creations and always with something new to surprise us, in addition to the classics. Rua Costa Carvalho, 74 | +55 11 3031 0955 | www.guilhotinabar.com.br

BACIO DI LATTE On the verge of completing 10 years in the market, the history of Bacio Di Latte starts when founder Edoardo Tonolli visited Brazil in 2009 for voluntary work at philanthropic hospitals in the Northeast region of Brazil and falls in love with Brazilian culture. Nowadays, it is so successful that it has expanded to more than 140 stores. Their menu is a true concert apart, as they usually work with 22 fixed flavors and 3 brand new ones every season. My top three are: Pistacchio (many recognize it as the best on the

market, with pistachios from Sicily), Cioccolato Belga (with Brazilian Amazonian cocoa) and the house signature Bacio di Latte. My honorable mentions go to the traditional ones, like Nocciola (with hazelnuts from Piemonte), Giandujotto (remarkable flavor with cocoa and hazelnuts) and Cremino (inspired by a typical Turin desert). Visit their website for the nearest location www.baciodilatte.com.br P.S.: for our California readers, they also have two stores in Los Angeles.

A SIX-PACK IN 2 WEEKS? This brand-new treatment boasts to provide 20,000 crunches in 30 minutes. Too good to be true? I tried it. BY LISA OPIE

H

AVE YOU GAINED THE “COVID-19”? ANY OF US that didn’t religiously follow at-home workouts can relate to the weight gain and softness that came along with quarantine and closed gyms. Although my gym opened up back in June, I am still skeptical about the safety measures in place for a place that has heavily shared equipment. I have to admit, my neglect did lead to a softer body shape and it did have me wanting to hide under sweatpants and loose clothing. With the holiday season approaching, I knew that I would be gaining even more unwanted weight. During one of my social media scrolling sessions, I saw a video posted by Miss New York USA Andreia Gibau where she used a non-invasive device called Emsculpt to help her tone up in preparation for the Miss USA pageant, which took place in early November. I did some research on Emsculpt and it led me to find Cooltone, a relatively new service from Zeltiq, the creators of Coolsculpting. I’ve been a fan of Coolsculpting and it does work really well to eliminate small amounts of unwanted fat, but it still left my body looking soft and not defined-which is why Cooltone is a great treatment to compliment your treatment and “polish up” your results. Although Emsculpt has been around for a couple years, Cooltone claims that it uses a 50% more magnetic intensity to give the muscle group a more strenuous “workout” for better results in less sessions. After doing some research on Cooltone and finding very little information on it (at the time of writing, realself.com only has 11 reviews on Cooltone), I decided to give it a try. I reached out to South Florida’s top non-surgical body contouring clinic, BodySquad, to book my sessions. I chose the BodySquad because they not only specialize in non invasive body contouring, but they also have

offered both Emsculpt and CoolTone and were able to provide me with unbiased information on each treatment. After my initial visit, the experts at the Bodysquad determined that I need 4 Cooltone sessions over a span of 2 weeks to get my desired results. I was able to immediately start my first treatment after my consultation. The setup is very comfortable- I got to lay in a pile of pillows and under a soft blanket. Bodysquad has a TV set up with not only regular TV, but also streaming services so you can watch your favorite show while you “work out.” The machine has a paddle that lays flat over your desired treatment area and it is held in place by a stretchy band. Cooltone has intensity levels that go up to 100%. When the machine initially starts, it feels like a light tap-- I started at 30%--and once the machine really starts going it feels like vibrations from a massage chair. The treatment was very painless and definitely

did not feel like 20,000 crunches. After my 30-minute session, I looked in the mirror and I was so surprised to see my abs already looked contoured- the kind of look I would get from carb loading and cutting water. That evening, I was shocked to see my abs and a flat stomach after only 1 session. The following day, I felt normal other than a little bit of soreness I would feel if I engaged my abs. It’s the exact same type of soreness you would feel after a workout. By my third session, I was able to go up to 100% intensity with ease. Overall, I noticed a huge difference after four Cooltone sessions. I have my dream abs and a flat stomach, and I am shocked at the ease and efficiency of the machine. You can see my personal results for yourself. The bottom line: Is it worth it? It’s 100% worth it for ideal candidates who are already in good shape and just need a little boost to achieve a tight and toned look.

A: WHEN WILL A PATIENT SEE RESULTS? B: Patients may see and feel their results immediately after their final treatment with results improving over a period of several weeks. A: ARE THE RESULTS PERMANENT? B: With a healthy diet and regular exercise, CoolTone treatments will have lasting results, along with recommended monthly CoolTone maintenance treatment.

CAPRICORN

22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY There is a beautiful synergy at work that leverages the right mix of talents, experiences, abilities, and skills. You may meet new acquaintances who help you to further your goals, or you could join a new group or association that gives you considerable pleasure and satisfaction. You may recognize talents that you never knew you had, and this can be a sudden, exciting discovery Confidence is the key–faith in the universe and in your ability to do the right thing instinctually will get you everywhere now. Favorable Dates: Dec 4, 5, 13, 14, 22, 23. Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow.

AQUARIUS

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY You feel more connected with your natural instincts during this period, which boosts your confidence in your own already uncanny intuition. You may make little changes to your personal appearance or to your mannerisms that reflect the changes going on inside. A desire to be more free-spirited is with you this month. For some, romance may be somewhat lacking, or a romantic relationship could be more practical than fun. For others, a romantic relationship stabilizes and becomes more serious. Favorable Dates: Dec 1, 8, 10, 17, 19, 26. Favorable Colors: Red & Blue.

PISCES

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH You have the tools to improve your income at this time, and the problems that crop up only serve to push you in the right direction, towards financial independence. Some of you may be promoted or your career takes a new direction. The challenge is to find a healthy balance–to improve home life, while at the same time tending to your career needs. Others see your charm and appeal, and they value you for your sparkling personality. Inner strength and control is the name of the game, and this is an ideal time to develop these qualities. Favorable Dates: Dec 1, 7, 10, 16, 19, 25. Favorable Colors: Yellow & Blue.

ARIES

21 MARCH – 19 APRIL This is a period in which your belief systems and personal philosophies are especially important to you, and you are more inclined to share them with those younger than you. It’s an excellent time for travel, higher education, communications, and higher learning. Social activity increases, and you enjoy greater freedom of thought, inspiration, and fresh ideas and insights that seem to come out of the

blue. Expanding your social circle is bound to expand your happiness and satisfaction from more broad-ranging experiences and perspectives. Favorable Dates: Dec 2, 6, 11, 15, 20, 24. Favorable Colors: Blue & Green.

TAURUS

20 APRIL – 20 MAY You are in the position to inspire others through what you create this month. You are bound to reach a broader audience if you do, and the feedback will feed the flames of your own inspiration. Your ideals are higher than usual, teaching may be part of the picture, and your cultural and spiritual awareness increases. Others notice your more tolerant and broadminded nature. Confidence is the key–faith in the universe and in your ability to do the right thing instinctually will get you everywhere now. Favorable Dates: Dec 3, 7, 12, 16, 21, 25. Favorable Colors: Red & White.

GEMINI

20 MAY – 20 JUNE You may expand your associations with others through new acquaintances or group activity and can derive much pleasure and satisfaction–even joy–through these connections. Business endeavors will go more smoothly for you if you recognize the value of the team at this time. On a personal level, you may feel restricted by, and sensitive to, pressures from an intimate partner. Issues of trust and control come into play, and they cause you to feel somewhat caged. This can affect your sexual expression as well. Favorable Dates: Dec 2, 9, 11, 18, 20, 29. Favorable Colors: Red & Blue.

CANCER

21 JUNE – 22 JULY You are more determined to achieve your personal goals, and more strategic in the manner you go about doing so. Pouring your heart and soul into your efforts comes naturally now. You are drawn to people who are free-spirited at this point in your life. Friends or group associations may be catalysts for this new self-expression. Friendships that are stodgy or limiting may very well be left behind. You have a strong ability to see each person for who they are as unique individuals, and this helps endear you to others. Favorable Dates: Dec 3, 4, 12, 13, 21, 22. Favorable Colors: White & Grey.

LEO

23 JULY - 22 AUGUST Your overall perspective on life has been expanding, and you are more willing to embrace unusual, mystical, or spiritual phi-

losophies. The direction your life is taking on a more philosophical level is what is on your mind these days, and you’re looking for something profound and deep. Superficial associations and friendships no longer do it for you, as you seek more meaningful connections. Adjustments need to be made in your intimate relationships in order to get to a “place” where you feel more free to relax and be yourself. Favorable Dates: Dec 5, 7, 14, 16, 23, 25. Favorable Colors: Green & Yellow.

VIRGO

23 AUGUST - 22 SEPTEMBER Your imagination is fertile, and you view your pastimes and the entertainment with open eyes. Your goals become more realistic, and you have a good sense of where you stand. Although personal relationships may have some restricting or tense moments, you learn more about how far you can go, and you come out stronger. If single, you might establish a serious romance or meet a more mature or older lover. Concerns about children, who may be entering a new stage of development that requires more attention, are likely, if applicable Favorable Dates: Dec 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 23. Favorable Colors: White & Red.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER You have a greater desire to get away, expand your horizons, and broaden your life experiences. This influence often correlates with a time when you are more able to get away from the daily routine. Some of you may have to make some critical decisions due to situations in your life that force you to make choices between career and family goals. Some of you may be promoted or your career takes a new direction. This is a good month for attracting what you want and improving your relations with others. Favorable Dates: Dec 2, 3, 11, 12, 20, 21. Favorable Colors: White & Blue.

SCORPIO
