VERY DAY, EVERY MONTH, and every moment is special to me, no matter what. I remember all the obāsans (old lady in Japanese) telling me to pay more attention to the surroundings and quit whining when I was younger. Perhaps I am getting older. Actually, I already am. But this one, in particular, is a moment to be celebrated. The effort of mass vaccination shows results in real life and directly reflects on businesses and in the fashion industry. One might say that fashion shows are still not the same - and I don’t mind. It’s a moment of recovery for everyone and for those businesses that held on tight and were strong enough to survive. Every person I saw at the show was so enthusiastic it’s unbelievable. Selfishly speaking, it was a magical moment to see the energy of the Miami International University (MIU) students – and my dear friends (who are now professors) that I admire so much. We were all together sharing the same moment, the ojisan (old man) within me alerted. By the way, I have to give our special thanks to Charlene Parsons and Oscar Lopez for kindly allowing us to sponsor the Best Overall Design. And the award winner was our dear Intern Natasha Tabunova. She amazes me with her passion, dedication, and creativity day in and out. Many of the AVESSA team members were at MIU’s show and that means a lot to an introvert like me, it was a moment of true celebration. Celebration of life through fashion, fashion that is more than a mere fabric, it’s the passion that connects and brings us all together.

Miami Swim Week finally arrived but perhaps with even more energy and style than was expected. There was obvious excitement for the return of runway shows with models attending from all over the country. There was sense of hurried rush as men and women ran between innumerous castings and as crowds flocked to chic bars, clubs and restaurants making them packed once again. The return of Swim Week definitely exceeded all expectations. Miami was just like the good old days – trendy, joyful and hectic. Besides directly benefiting the fashion industry, this week also increases the economic demand for additional business sectors and produces so many other opportunities and new jobs for the local leisure economy. Hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, stores and malls were as full as before, which generated great economic optimism after such a difficult last year. It was enthralling to see models with such diverse body types and ethnicities being casted, as well as, seeing the joyous faces of these models as they fulfilled their dreams of attaining the most sought-after jobs. It was so exciting to be reliving all of this again. One aspect of Swim Week that did change was how the brands invested their time and money. Brands were more restrained in their fashion presentations, and they focused on using more proven and economic venues. But the rest of the energy was all as it was before, it was hopeful and wonderful, giving us that optimism to move on! AUGUST 2021 |

HE FIRST LATINA TO LEAD THE COSTUME DESIGN FOR the Super Bowl LV Halftime Show, for The Weekend’s performance, Lila Nikole presented us with another incredible fashion-forward collection. Inspired by Jennifer Lopez’s Jenny from the block, Nikole’s new swimwear collection “WYLD” for Miami Swim Week 2021 was gorgeous and creative. We can see a New York vibe to it, with a lot of gold accessories, tribal and animal prints, neon and high waisted pieces. “Swim Week is our favorite time of the year, the buzz this year is so exciting. I can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on”, says Nikole. Together with the swim collection, the designer brought us a lifestyle collection as well, including hoodies, jackets and menswear. With top models from all around the world, Lila presented her collection at the Faena Forum and closed the famous Española Way in Miami Beach for another show. The latter supported a fundraiser for Silent Victims of Crime, a children’s foundation, while supporting local Miami Beach businesses at the same time. It’s not Swim Week without the presence of Lila Nikole, every year her show is one of the most anticipated. Don’t miss her interview in this issue!

OURDES “LULI” HANIMIAN AND Augusto Hanimian, co-founders of Luli Fama, kicked off the show with a dance performance, setting a tone that was sexy, playful, and resounding with energy. The runway show “Revel in the Sun” and the collection was inspired by extravagant seaside beach parties in Mykonos and the confident empowered women that make up the brand’s customer base. Luli Fama is known for its glamour, textured fabrics, and intricate, colorful palettes. With its founders growing up with the beaches of Miami at their doorstep, it is no wonder that their swim and resort wear are artistic, alluring, and sophisticated and yet they are also extremely appropriate for a romp in the ocean or sipping the sharp, rich taste of champagne by the pool. One standout look is a gorgeous one-piece suit with a multi-colored fabric that mimicked the oranges, pinks, and blues of a sun-drenched Mediterranean Sea. It is emblematic of the collection, using rich hues, a hint of edging, and beautiful corsetstyle lacing. The rest of the collection, which includes barely-there bikinis and resort wear perfect for lounging, has a variety of other bold colors, sexy cut-outs, and the eponymous “Luli” gold medallion placed in strategic spots. Luli Fama was joyous and vibrant which matched the return of the runway shows.

COLOR MATTERS

N

IGERIAN AMERICAN DESIGNER BUKI ADE HAS consistently offered what many other brands lack, a definitive and loving vision for all women of color and body types. BFyne once again dominated Miami swim week by producing a runway show that casted only black models while using hair and makeup teams to highlight the glorious differences between women of color. Buke Ade’s color palate was exquisite with a focus on oranges, browns and greens in shades that complimented all the model’s lovely melanin skin tones. A bikini in a vibrant orange, that reminded us of tiger stripes, stood out with a beautifully tailored halter top and a highcut bottom. The model sensually glided down the runway in these bikini-wearing hoop earrings and

dozens of brilliant gold necklaces that mimicked an African choker fit for an Egyptian queen. BFyne used these hoop earrings to great effect on nearly all their looks throughout the show, which was so appropriate, since this style originated around 2500 B.C.E. in Nubia, an African civilization located in what we now call Sudan. Another gorgeous halter-topped look, this time hued in metallic bronze color, led the runway and symbolized Buki Ade’s ode to diversely shaped women. The long dress fell to the model’s ankles with a sexy high slit on the side but was still shaped to complement real women with real shapes. BFyne set out to celebrate women of color and made a statement that spoke to both social and fashionably chic audiences.

IAMI IS LITERALLY THE HOTTEST INTERNATIONAL Fashion Week in the Resort and Swimwear segment of the textile industry. Between the 5th and 12th of July, the city hosts a huge number of professionals from this sector, moving the local economy and generating significant business for entrepreneurs and their brands. The most highdemand events continue to be the fashion shows that take place all over Miami Beach. Super fit bodies, authentically designed brands, and lots of flashes can be seen outdoors under a nearly 80 F sun beside pools, iconic beaches and branded hotels. Since we are talking about design, creativity and lifestyle in the summer… It is evident that Brazilian brands stand out for the ‘Brazilian soul’ they carry in their collections. Innovation in materials and shapes, and elements of genuine regional Brazilian culture are transported to the P H OTO C R E D I T S J O H N PA R R A / F LY I N G S O L O

products. The result is seen below in the mix of brands from the Flying Solo New York collective parade during Miami Swim Week 2021. Flying Solo is a showroom/store with more than 100 independent brands in the fashion heart of the Big Apple, more precisely in Soho. Amongst the resident brands, we have Volta Atelier, a handbag brand created by Fernanda Daudt, presented a collaboration with Carrano shoes, both brands shining through the Miami runways. The incredible project created by Volta Atelier, using the concept of upcycling, aims to empower women in high social vulnerability through design. The raw material undergoes the meticulous selection from Fernanda, who takes advantage of the waste disposal of big brands and the brilliant creativity of the Brazilian fashion industry. Volta Atelier is already sold in more than 60 points of sale across the US.

KREL excels at color and creating lightweight knits that one wants to live in and not just look at. This collection has one dress that demonstrates the versatility and beauty of Karelle’s aesthetic. This asymmetrical dress is woven with shimmering stripes that combine all of the colors highlighted in the collection. It has sexy straps with a cinched-in

This beautiful knit dress was made to wear as you drink a cool, crisp glass of fruity chardonnay while everyone else looks on in envy and desire. I c a n picture Miami googling cute and sexy bikinis and one-piece swimsuits photos online. Miami is a female, for sure. I mean, how could she not, if this is the city of extremely hot and confident women of all colors and shapes. She has to be a woman. And not being able to parade herself in a spectacular design in front of her hottie friends, under the sun and close to the water, must have been painful. So, after one year of harrowing pandemic lockdown, anxiously watching virtual events and daydreaming of being there in person, the city’s longings became true this past July 8th, at the exciting fashion show kicking off Paraiso Miami Beach - Swim Week 2021: Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU). This year, what is considered one of the most significant events in Magic City, gathered 24 Associate and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design students, who presented their latest collections for the highly anticipated and inperson (Oh, YES!), Miami Swim Show. And just like it’s happened for the past 5 years, the school’s Design

International University of Art & Design. Well, there was no way it wouldn’t be special, as there were 13 nationalities among the designers, which was evident during the show and delighting to enjoy: Cuba, Lebanon, USA, Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Chile, Argentina, Belarus, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Honduras were all very well represented. And now I should add that the eyes with which I watched and reviewed the show are those of someone fiercely passionate about aesthetics and a fashion junkie. An author, actually, yet not an expert in the subject. And I don’t pretend to be one. This was my very first fashion show and I got to sit in the front row, writing my impressions on my notebook. I wrote words for what each design awoke in me. The show opened with a female, onepiece swimsuit by brilliant Alejandro Bárzaga. I don’t know the guy, but one can tell he shines. His super sexy design made me think of a goddess of Mount Olympus, and I wasn’t the only one excited about his work, because he won the Editorial Award: “My inspiration comes from Greek mythology history and the exquisite structural technique of sculpting their marble works, the amphorae with their infinite patterns, and the drape of their fabrics. I love dressing women who command their presence when clothing is just a complement to their personality”.

The students demonstrated a variety of playful and gorgeous silhouettes. These garments gave us fashion that beckoned to both the past and the future. There were looks harkening to the sixties with fabulous sheer bell-bottoms transparently layered over a white bikini. I was also imagining the kind of swimsuit that trendsetters would wear in Cannes while deciding whether to buy tickets to the Moon, or not... Technical shimmering textiles were paired with vests that had intricate cutouts or gorgeous mint green beading embroidered over a sheer fabric.

Cover-ups abounded on the models with sexy, colorful, and flowing wraps for men and women. They ran the gamut from bold colors to Latin-inspired lace to floral embroidery that belonged in a vase. One of my favorite cover-ups was that of Milagros Rottjer. It was an olive-colored h1gh waisted two-piece suit with a playful forest green embroidered wrap. Gorgeous, elegant, and oh-so-feminine. I got the chance to talk to her after the show and she was very emotional because of the results of her hard work but also because her mother, also a fashion designer in Argentina, would be very proud of her. Rottjer made me smile. I was also fascinated by one wrap-

Though I worried if the netting and beads over the buttocks would be uncomfortable to wear, but someone explained to me they move up when you sit, so no problem there. My soul was stolen as a ruffled orange, one-piece swimsuit paired with a rich chocolate brown leather sarong that came out on the runway. I found it very feminine, elegant, and spectacular. Orange has been slowly becoming my favorite color, though, I wouldn’t wear her design. You see, I’m a frosting-witha-spoon kind of woman. If I wasn’t, that would be my only swimsuit. I would buy 4 of them and just rotate them while on a yacht sipping champagne and avoiding the foie gras and the truffles.

I like to design pieces that reflect my personality, things that I would wear myself.”

The Menswear Award sponsored by Perry Ellis was Dana El Ghoul. She was supremely creative by designing a beautiful, black embroidered vest as well as a delicate black lace robe styled in combination over classic swim trunks that both projected masculinity while still enabling the beauty of the fabric to take center stage. Natallia (aka Natasha) Tabunova won the Best Overall Design Award (which by the way was sponsored by AVESSA - and we’re so proud of her), but prior to the prize being announced I immediately loved her designs and eye for detail. four pieces for women, all as imperial-looking and neatly crafted. She is a brilliant artist, which was confirmed when I interviewed her for this piece: “I wanted to put everything I learned in this collection. I’m not only a designer but also a painter and I’ve 3D painted on these costumes that I don’t call ‘swimwear’, because they’re more theatrical than regular swimsuits. I went to MIU to do costume design for movies and TV, I don’t want to do mass production. I want to create one-of-a-kind pieces”. And the one thing they all had in common at the show was evident to me and to everyone: hard, very hard work, and outstanding creativity. Miami International University of Art and Design is producing not only professionals but artists, and I can’t wait to see them all thriving and making all their dreams come true. All these now, Fashion Designers, have a brilliant future ahead and I am so sure. You don’t need to be a fashion expert to know it. NATASHA, YOU HAVE A DISTINCTIVE BACKGROUND COMING FROM BELORUSSIA, BEING A FIERCELY DEVOTED MOTHER, WIFE, AND HAVING SUCH A THIRST FOR LEARNING. WHAT IGNITED YOUR PASSION FOR FASHION? I am an artist, painter, and fashion designer. I was born and raised in Belorussia where there were few resources to be creative. In school, I had many friends that had elective classes for theater but at the same time, there were no costumes for any productions. So, they asked me to help make their costumes. We found and even stole construction material, cardboard, paper, and other untraditional materials to be used instead of fabric. When I was growing up, our government gave each family vouchers which we turned in for clothes. These clothes could have been t-shirts or dresses in all different colors or they could have

all the exact same color. I remember when I was 6 years old, after waiting 5 hours in line for these t-shirts, all that was left for me was 5 shirts in an ugly flat brown color. I never wanted to be the same as everyone else. So, this disappointment only made me want to change what I received even more. I used pigment, from my mother’s pharmacy allotment, and water to tie-dye these shirts with a bright pink color. I was so happy then and it was the first experience in my life where I made something new, and it made me feel different. Another time, my brother played hockey and he wore high socks up to his knees. They were pinkish in color. I begged my brother to give them to me. So, then I wore them to school which enforced an extremely strict way of dressing. My principal called my parents to extract me from school because I was wearing these socks. I was so lucky to have parents that did not want to cut my wings.

For some people being a mother is enough, but for me? There is more. I am hungry to learn new things and I expect to continue learning all my life. There is so much left in the world for me to discover.

So, they said, “Okay Natasha, wear the socks outside the school”. I was trying all the time to be different. I am a tall girl, and, in the USA, I wear a size 11 which was difficult to find in Belorussia. So, I ended up buying men’s shoes and painted them to make them more stylish with rhinestones and beads. My fashion passion started in my childhood where it opened up my imagination and creation. I am a mother and wife and my kids have grown enough, so I can do more. For some people being a mother is enough, but for me? There is more. I am hungry to learn new things and I expect to continue learning all my life. There is so much left in the world for me to discover. YOU HAD SOME FIERCE COMPETITION IN THE FINAL PRESENTATION OF YOUR GRADUATING CLASSES’ WORK, HOW DID IT FEEL TO GET THE BEST OVERALL DESIGNER AWARD? I was enormously proud of myself. I knew that I wanted to enjoy all these moments leading up to the final runway. I did not want to be stressed during this time. I wanted to enjoy every second behind the scenes and on the stage although I did get a little nervous after the award was announced. Usually, instead of being nervous, I just look at the work that must get done and focus to finish with minimal nerves. To achieve what I wanted, this final presentation took a lot of preparation. I am a deeply passionate student and an overachiever, especially when it comes to a competition. If I cannot put in 200% of myself into projects or tasks, then I do not want to do it at all. You must always go all-in on any goal or competition with a feeling that you are going to win. No matter what happens, you are going to win. I enjoyed every second of working on my design, although it was a long process. In the end, the process was approximately 11 weeks, which was almost too long for me. I work better with shorter time frames to make a garment, but in the end, I was proud of what I achieved. My professors and family were also proud of me which so also important to me.

GIVE US THE INSIDE SCOOP ON THE VIBES BACKSTAGE? STRESS, FEAR, OR PURE CONFIDENCE? I had been working a lot backstage for over 30 fashion shows and photoshoots. But the Miami International University operations team was always perfect. The organizers and technicians have extensive experience in this type of work, they are punctual and used to the various needs of students throughout the years. For me? There was no stress. Behind the stage, there were also a lot of students helping each other. In addition, the professors were helping all of us and designated academic mentors were helping their students behind the scenes. But this fashion show was special since there was such a big gap of time, 1 year from the previous show because of Covid-19. Everyone was so excited to be in this type of rush again. Everyone was enjoying each moment. One teacher even said when models go to the runway, there will be a silent moment before the storm. Everyone felt this moment. It was so great even though there was a limited number of garments we could present this time. All of us were relaxed, we were still in a rush but enjoying our moments because when a team is working together

You must always go all-in on any goal or competition with a feeling that you are going to win

there is such positive energy behind them. All these 20-25 people were working for this one special moment. And this moment is important for all of us, so everyone worked together, and it is such a great feeling. So, I enjoyed my time backstage very much and I hope to help more behind the stage because there is some magic that happens there. People who are sitting in front and watching the show see the beauty, but they cannot see what is going behind. It is a rush with broken zippers, lastminute adjustments to garments, models needing to get dressed super quickly because they need to get back to the runway. It is super fun. YOUR FINAL PIECES WERE BEAUTIFULLY STYLED AND HAD SOME AMAZING DETAILS, LIKE THE 3D-PRINTED CRAB PURSES. WHAT DREW THESE PIECES TOGETHER? DID YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC INFLUENCE? WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE LOOK? I consider myself not just a fashion designer, but also an artist and creator. Because I like to combine many things together. I believe that I have a good vision, it was hard to prove this myself at first. But now I know that I can put together strange, different things and in the end, they look great together, cohesively. All the time when I make a garment or a composition from a couple of outfits, I always want to add some details to push this garment to a higher level to complete the look. I am not a natural stylist, but I can do this type of work as well, I do like to mix and match the details, but I also like to use high tech in my looks, such as a 3D printer.

I do not want to be a painter that just paints roses. I want to be a person that finds these roses, takes a picture of them then puts them into a garment. Even more, I would want to layer the roses with leather and then put some architectural structure on top of that.

Not many people know what this printer is nor how to use it. My son introduced me to this concept as he was playing with it. I ended up learning and experimenting with the programming and I found the images that I wanted to use and digitize them to make them real. My accessories are sustainable since the printer used recycled plastic for the final creation which is important to me. Something old into something new. I am also passionate about the antique stuff, the vintage stuff. I do like exploring flea markets, antique stores, and auctions. In Belorussia, I used to work in auctions for probably 2 years. There was such a big energy in auctions which shows that I do love working when there is energy whether it is from an auction or anyplace else. I do not have specific influences, but I do admire designers who brought something new or different to fashion. I admire Gianni Versace, some people may not like his aesthetic, but he brought a new, colorful, and sexy feel to fashion. I also like Elsa Schiaparelli, but my favorite designer is Rei Kawakubo, the female Japanese designer, who created Comme des Garçons. She did a lot for fashion, she reinvigorated the old broken stereotypes in fashion, silhouettes, lines, and what she is doing for young designers is especially important. I like her vision; she is a creator not just a designer. Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and even Rei Kawakubo are not my influencers in my designs instead, they act as guides for what I want to bring to fashion. If I was forced to pick a favorite look in my designs for the runway, it would be the striped bird of paradise in a cage, but I love all of my looks equally, to be honest.

FASHION DESIGNER, PRODUCTION ASSISTANT, INTERN AT AVESSA, AND BURGEONING PHOTOGRAPHER, YOU HAVE A RELENTLESS AND ADMIRABLE DESIRE TO TRY IT ALL. WHAT ASPECT IS YOUR FAVORITE, OR DO YOU WANT TO DO IT ALL? I am a deeply passionate person and I enjoy everything related to art. I want to look at all perspectives of any artistic piece, I can always find something to love or even something that can drive me crazy. I do believe that artists should not be narrow and just focuses on one specific area. I do not want to be a painter that just paints roses. I want to be a person that finds these roses, takes a picture of them then puts them into a garment. Even more, I would want to layer the roses with leather and then put some architectural structure on top of that. And only if you study a lot and are passionate about many things can you then create something that is interesting, that people can enjoy. Art should be enjoyable, it does not have to be beautiful, but art should pull to many people even for a second and hopefully catch their passion. If art can make people think then only this makes sense to me. I have a master’s degree in economics, which was my nightmare. When I came to the United States, I decided to switch to something that I was in love with for all my life. And it’s Art. I went to Miami International University to study costume design because my biggest dream is to create costumes for films. And I think that with everything I know, I can combine them to be able to work in film costume design, not just for a specific piece of clothing but for the whole look.

FTER A FEAR-FILLED AND INTROVERTED YEAR, THE FUTURE is still uncertain, but Giambattista Valli wants us to venture out and feel intoxicated. Nonetheless, the theme of this collection is that while we should be open and happy, we cannot forget that we are not entirely in control of the situation. “It’s le goût du louche,” Giambattista Valli said during a preview in his Rue la Boétie couture salons: ‘a taste for danger,’ you might say. Juxtaposed with Oscar Niemeyer’s dreary concrete structure that was once the Communist Party of France’s headquarters, we are presented with frothy tulle cloud dresses, glamorously draped chiffon gowns, and sequined column dresses painted with a gorgeous pastel brush. Lurking like a vampiric shadow, Giambattista also

included another darker mood with silhouettes that included severe tailoring, black tulle, and a series of clerical men’s ensembles. The result was Valli’s strongest collection in years. His fantasy was very fresh – with candy-floss colors, floating feathers and stunning wigs or futurist hairstyles courtesy of hairstylist Odile Gilbert. Several mammoth chiffon gowns with four-meter trains appeared and not only looked amazing but also floated majestically in the presentation. “It’s very Ryan Murphy, no?” Giambattista Valli said as he surveyed the filming of his fall 2022 haute couture collection. A surreal, cultish, sinister mood that also played with a refreshing dewy-eyed appreciation for fashion. Work that resulted in clothes that looked even better in real life than in a photoshoot. AN EMOTIONAL WORK OF ART BY MENA LOMBARD

W

ITH A STROKE OF COLORful elegance, Virginie Viard shares her romantic and hopeful view of the post-pandemic future that awaits us. Inspired by the work of impressionist artist Berthe Morisot, Viard gently and masterfully takes us on a stroll through hued and bloomed French prairies. Chanel’s Fall 2021 Couture Collection brings back the glamour of the 1930’s style and adorns it with impeccable embroidery work by Atelier Vernoux, Atelier Montex, Cecile Henri, and Lesage. Lemarie’s flower designs complete this fashion masterpiece, evoking the flourished gardens that Morisot skillfully and beautifully portrayed time and again using oil over canvas. Tweed jackets with billowy skirts and tulle flowers blooming under the brims of hats are part of this incredible story of dabs of color, romance, and glorious sophistication. Viard’s “little deshabilles”, impeccable bustiers, and coats are just a few of the many delicate pieces that graced the galleries of Palais Galliera, turning the fashion museum into a colorful field of poetic craftsmanship.

BUDS OF E HOPE BY ALFONSO DE HOYOS-ACOSTA

64

| AUGUST 2021

LIE SAAB IS KNOWN AS AN ETERNAL OPTIMIST AND his fall collection focuses on the symbolism of flowers emerging once again into the light. The collection is full of sumptuous fabrics moving from bold, dark colors into pale, airy blues, and ivories. “We try to take away things or add things to ensure lightness. Each time, we try to present haute couture embroidery in a different manner,” said Saab, speaking from Lebanon.

The clothes were not a literal interpretation of flowers, instead they were infused with impressions from a blooming garden which included floral head pieces and rosebow belts. All of which may be interpreted as a nod to the golden age of couture instigated by Dior. The designer also played with volumes from wide-skirted dresses

to draped, embroidered gowns using textured floral motifs created with feathers, velvet or sequins. Although Elie Saab continues to provide gorgeous, feminine gowns with a princess vibe, he also showcased modern, deconstructed silhouettes that played with transparency and the lightest of fabrics. Some of the more unex-

pected looks were achieved by using three dimensional embellishments over gauzy materials, such as tulle or chiffon. One standout was an ivory, tone-on-tone gown featuring a sheer cut-out with flowers embroidered to seem as if they floated above the body. The entire collection spoke of rebirth and hope. “I love life,” exclaimed Saab.

NTITLED “THE MATADOR”, SCHIAPARELLI’S nostalgic 2021 fall collection features the already famous 70-metre-long Taffeta wedding dress, a focus on body bijoux and an overall surreal glamour. Daniel Roseberry has created an emotional and passionate collection. Inspired from classic haute couture with its volumes and surrealist collaborations. He said, “I found myself wondering, again and again: What if you combined a little Manet; a little Lacroix; a little 1980s; a little 1880s; a little matador; a little space alien; a little Ingres; a little shimmer; a lot of color? Could I do it? And what would it look like?” And the answer to that was his fourth collection, as a tribute to Elsa Schiaparelli and her vision. The starting point of the collection was the discovery of 1930’s swatches from the French embroiderer Lesage. A flower-embroidered jacket recalls a 1937 collection with artist Jean Cocteau. And perhaps the most special of all, a denim jacket that is patch-worked from 11 pairs of used Levi’s. The human body represented by accessories, such as delicate, golden, metallic lungs, and other pieces made from silks, and embroidery were in the second part of the presentation. The final room of the collection was full of color with voluminous, edgy, and unique gowns, that only Roseberry can design.

DEFINE YOUR SELF MAJESTICALLY BY ALFONSO DE HOYOS-ACOSTA

V

IKTOR HORSTING & ROLF SNOEREN STOOD back with this irreverent and creatively experimental collection to highlight the gap between reality and the facade of hierarchical institutions. Yes, the world is still seemingly obsessed with royalty. In fact, we demand that our aristocrats have a bigger-than-life attitude while still squeezing themselves into stereotypical masculine norms. These designs are upfront in questioning that attitude and in showing us that what is really happening behind the scenes may not match up to the facade. The collection still shows a dedication to reducing waste by utilizing patchwork fabrics and reintroducing similar coat shapes, slogan slashes and jewelry from past work. But the designs here are pushed even further into fairy tale imagination. Horsting noted “It’s like a play on queens or royals. We wanted to be uplifting and joyful and—fun is not the right word—but colorful, sparkling, positive. You are your own creation.” Silhouettes were designed as dresses, or coats with most including a sash, which bore witty expressions such as “Princess? No Bitch, Queen!” or “Size Queen”. Many fabrics were made of patchworks of jacquards mixed with embellishments such the gorgeously multicolored fabric covered gemstones. This work continuously asks us, what is real? But Victor and Rolf are not telling us what to think. Instead? They are explaining that the show must go on no matter what, so we need to define ourselves first before someone else does it for us.

ROMA, L’ETERNO ROMANTICO BY ANGÉLIQUE SALCEDO

F

ENDI’S NEW ART DIECTOR KIM JONES comes back to present his second couture collection for the house during Paris Fashion Week earlier this month, and the least we can say is that it was a poetic tribute to the city of Rome. Inspired by Italian directors Pier Paolo Pasolini and Luca Guadagnino, more specifically Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” famous for showcasing looks that were both poetic and filled with subtle references. Therefore,

the pleats remind us of the marble sculptures, the exuberant trains to Rome’s great past, the graphics to the Corinthian columns or, the drapings to the Ancient Roman’s toahs. For autumn-winter 2021-2022 the color palette is softer, opting for more pastel tones and enhancing the romantic side of Rome. Finding the perfect balance between the past and the present, Jones created a contemporary collection that celebrates Rome. AUGUST 2021 |

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

The sense of freedom is Iris van Herpen mantra

I

NSPIRED BY BOTH DOMITILLE KIGER, A FRENCH FEMALE FREE FLY world-champion, and the world-famous photo, “Earthrise”, taken from Apollo 8, showing the earth as a “blue marble”, Iris Van Herpen brought us a very symbolic and unforgettable collection. “It’s really this otherworldly perspective that I wanted to bring in as an energy into this collection,” said the designer. The visual poem created by Van Herpen was unique and as she believes, it is the first athlete to wear couture floating midair with Kiger’s fall to Earth. The magnificent, recycled ocean blue-plastic dress was made by an alliance between science and design. Once the dress was created by science, Kiger was then freed to express the artistic side of skydiving which incorporated the symbolism that Van Herpen wanted. She wanted this combination because, “It’s really the freedom of adventure and the strength of being able to overcome your fears, and to really be so eager to create that you’re able to go far in pushing your own boundaries”. The other earthbound gowns were incorporated with Van Herpen’s experimental techniques and diverse materials – Van Herpen’s signature. The collection included gowns that were stiffer and more sculptural, as well as including vibrant colors and recycled materials. The collection also featured some amazing collaborations with artists, Regan Brown and James Merry.

HICH ONE OF US HAS NEVER HAD sparkling eyes watching Serena Van der Woodsen (Gossip Girl) parading on a Fashion Week runway? Who has never stumbled upon the Fashion TV channel - and actually found it captivating? And don’t tell me those Chanel boots in The Devil Wears Prada didn’t have you drooling. Whether we like it or not, the clothes displayed in our favorite shops are inspired by the most prominent fashion designers’ masterwork. And yet. The sanitary crisis the world has suffered all through last year has disrupted the whole of the fashion system. Let’s talk about the almost collapse of Queen Fashion’s kingdom. For a moment there, we have been left to our own device. The greatest clothing suppliers found themselves buried in mounds of unsold items, while the biggest portion of fashion trendsetters turned to different sources of inspiration than runways. Now that we are able to roam freely in malls’ hallways, it is legitimate to wonder what is left of the Fashion industry - from the runways to our drawers

A NO-RUNWAY IMPACT ON FASHION INSPIRATION Coming out of a global pandemic, we most certainly have hindsight on its impact on our lives. From our jobs to our children’s school, time was stopped and lives were frozen. Some would even say it has been one of the worst times in the history of the fashion industry. Because of a lack of occasions to dress up, last year, people swapped their smart business outfits with cozy loungewear. This casualization phenomenon has widely been conveyed by the craving of cozy and fluffy textures: teddy, knitwear, velvet were the watchwords of the many lockdowns we went through. The fact that society turned completely virtual for almost two years has certainly led to the development of new markets. It is interesting to note how swiftly the fashion industry has taken advantage of the

global mask shortage at the beginning of the pandemic. As a response, stylish and colorful masks were designed in masses, bringing to light slogans asuch as ‘Stay safe in style’. Besides, it appeared that people had bought more and more tops as they progressively entered the Zoom era, wearing blouses and shirts over their pajamas during virtual meetings. It is safe to say that fashion didn’t die during this agonizing crisis. Even though fashion shows were not on our agendas, the whole industry digitalized itself. Fashion was supported by social media more than ever, waiting for a renewal as soon as life could resume its course. People were released in an arena of “if’s’’: “if we could go to Coachella, I would wear this top”, “if I could go to prom, I would wear this gown”, “if I were brave enough, I would wear this outfit”. Progressively, we have let our imagination rule our most primitive sense of fashion. While some of us displayed new and affirmed styles as a personality statement, others took advantage of the situation to wear outfits that could have been called out-of-date in other circumstances. For instance, many clothing websites, no longer ruled by trendsetting of runways, were inspired by the styles of Millennials and Generation Z: the 90’s were back on the podium, as well as a new romantic style…

WE ALL KNOW THE ABILITY OF TOP BRANDS TO INNOVATE AND IMPOSE NEW TRENDS VIA THE RUNWAYS

RETURN TO RUNWAYS: THE RENEWAL OF INSPIRATION Overall, can we truly say that we have been able to make do without runways? The role of fashion shows has shifted for sure. Even if some of us had the chance to attend virtual fashion shows, those have not influenced the industry as strongly as they usually do. Its importance, actually, has been highly questioned. However, we all know the ability of top brands to innovate and impose new trends via the runways. As soon as lockdowns were lifted, people ran to their favorite shops, queuing to get in Zara or H&M, thus revitalizing and boosting the confidence of the fashion market. It might take some time to bounce back and regain the prestige it had before the development of new trends on social media. However, it now seems that runways and social media are working hand in hand for the genesis of a new way of thinking fashion.

TRENDS,TRENDY, THE 2021 WAY We want to look good. Beyond that, the fashion scene in 2021 also aims at making people feel genuinely good. Givenchy, for one, has understood our needs. In their Pre-fall 2021 Collection, the Maison Givenchy has showcased the ultimate balance between goingback-to-work looks, and comfortable, reaffirmed styles. The brand has chosen to bet on loose fits for its suits, puff sleeves on jackets and adjusted dresses. The black, white, red and khaki tones reflect the ‘elegant and powerful chic’ motto of this collection and are supported by fierce materials such as patent leather and studded accessories. Polo Ralph Lauren too has adapted its Spring 2021 Ready-to-wear collection to our expectations. After such a long time spent at home, most of us are willing to have a break and go on

vacation. The watchwords this summer are purity, simplicity, and romantic minimalism, supported by pastel colors such as baby blue, dusty pink, and pearl grey. Reinventing the American classics that lie at its core, the brand has been able to launch a fresh collection of white, navy blue and pastel blue earlier this year. The textures are airy, blending the idea of coziness with loose fits and matching summer vibes. All evokes the freedom and impulsiveness of travels, with a classy touch. Celine has made the choice to pursue what has been trendy on social media the last few months by restyling the 80’s Parisian style and the bourgeois codes. For its Fall 2021 collection, no skinny jeans or uncomfortable clothes have been reported. It is all about loose trench coats and straight jeans, in khaki and beige tones that give us strong retro-vibes.

WHAT NEXT? It seems that the pandemic has led to 180° rethinking of the way we dress: we are more aware of the ethical aspect of clothes, on an environmental and social level. People are ready to invest in sustainable clothes, even if the prices are a bigger commitment. While many of us are choosing second-hand fashion, leading brands such as Stella McCartney are digging even deeper to produce more responsible clothes. Being able to follow through a cruelty-free process, reducing the environmental impacts by using renewable resources and still being able to produce runway-worthy collections is proof that fashion is moving forward. Runways have shown in many ways that they can adapt to what people want. The whole crisis has emphasized the fact that people now want to dress glamorously and extravagantly without leaving aside comfort. We want gowns, glitter, heels, and most importantly pockets in our dresses.

When I received the invitation to visit the “Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifest” Exhibition that is taking place in Paris, I felt blessed beyond words because the event has been sold out for weeks. I remember watching the Chanel Fall 2021 Haute Couture Fashion Show that just took place at the Palace Galliera,

and thinking how meaningful it was that Virginie Viard was showcasing her new collection in the same venue where so many designs from Coco Chanel herself were being exhibited. While the models walked down the Galliera’s incredible staircases, past, present, and future were sharing the same point in

place and time, and it felt almost magical. Not in a million years I would have ever imagined that just a few days after watching that video I would be walking up those same stairs to visit the very first Parisian retrospective dedicated to the work and influence of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.

HER UNWILLINGNESS TO FOLLOW TRENDS AND HER DETERMINATION TO LISTEN AND FOLLOW HER OWN INSTINCT WAS THE SECRET TO HER SUCCESS

To say it was breathtaking is an understatement. The event is masterfully curated, showcasing garments, jewels, accessories, sketches, notes, and audiovisuals with the same style and elegance Chanel herself would have done it. It is an immersive experience that highlights her outstanding work and everlasting influence. The exhibition starts at the Galliera’s first level, with some of her first designs dating from the 1910s and it almost hits you how clear her vision comes through. You realize how incredibly recognizable her style

was from the start and how she was able to create timeless fashion from the very beginning. Her unwillingness to follow trends and her determination to listen and follow her own instinct was the secret to her success because it created a space of her own, where she chose to approach fashion with refinement and elegance with comfort, making women the focus of it all. The exhibition invites you to see how she played with the juxtaposition

of opposite elements like black and white, feminine, and masculine, simple lines with intricate textiles. And you understand that her approach was based on simplicity, achieved by refined haute couture techniques that balanced contrasting ideas to create interest. The exhibition then takes you downstairs, where the first accessories are showcased in the magnificent brick-covered walls of the cellars. An impressive array of jewelry is displayed, where you also get to see the first prototype of her two-toned shoe and her famous 2.55 handbag. You learn how she started working with fabric

houses and how she understood that she wanted to create more than just fashion. She was focused and fully determined in creating a style. And that was exactly what she did, revolutionizing the fashion industry and changing the world along the way. Throughout the entire exhibition, you can feel her presence and her spirit. This event truly highlights the work and accomplishments of a woman that stood apart from the rest, from where she provided a new look at fashion and a different perspective on how to approach it. This exhibition is not only a manifest but a testament to the influence of a woman that lived and thought ahead of her time. An icon that changed fashion so it could properly become the highlight of the wearer. A designer that opened the path to all that would come after her to continue the journey she started. A woman that singlehandedly revolutionized an entire industry twice in a century, and the world forever. Coco Chanel is inimitable. Her influence is everlasting. Her style is unique. And this Fashion Manifesto not only honors her but also decodifies the formula that made her timeless.

SUMMER TIME

Is there a season more adapted to women empowerment than summer? We have all come across the pictures of Marilyn Monroe proudly wearing her retro bath suit in the ’50s, or Brigitte Bardot, sensually blooming under the sun of St Tropez in the ’60s at least once. OWADAYS, THE FIGHT AGAINST SEXISM IS STILL on, and the many debates about the difference in salary and rights between men and women are inflaming TV sets and social media. Women are continuously striving for a better consideration of who they are and what they want. They want to wear trouser suits without being called a man, they want to wear miniskirts at night without fear, they want their art to be recognized without hiding behind the name of a man. They don’t want to be systematically the stayat-home parent, and they don’t like to be considered fragile. And as gender equality is not fully established yet, we still need to hear the words “women empowerment.” When Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man, not only did she become a symbol for the black cause, but she also placed herself on an equal level with men. When Simone de Beauvoir published ‘The second sex,’ the Vatican placed her writing on the list of forbidden texts, but she became one of the first feminists in the world in doing so. These two women were fighting for their rights and have unveiled serious social issues. After women obtained the right to vote in most countries, the social pressure about beauty be-

SUMMER IS THAT TIME OF THE YEAR WHERE YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE A GODDESS came more prominent than ever. That is what the current women’s empowerment movement is trying to fight, supported by many personalities. Emma Watson, Hillary Clinton, Beyoncé, and even Billie Eilish stepped out of her comfort zone in her latest Vogue boudoir photoshoot and taught us never to stay locked up in some virtual box. All these women have paved the way for women empowerment, accepting our differences, and the rejection of social injunctions. Following their steps might sometimes be tricky, so we have prepared for you a little guide on how to take control and be more confident, especially this summer! The first step in empowering yourself as a strong woman is to feel like it. Summer is that time of the year where you want to feel like a goddess in your swimsuit and be able to overlook any judgmental gaze on

the beach. After all, we have survived a pandemic and have no more room for bad vibes! Mentally or physically, here are some tips you can use to feel on top this summer. CLEAR YOUR MIND. All you want this summer is to feel the peace in your mind. Whether it is by reading an enriching book and having deep stimulating conversations, what you need to do is take a deep dive into real life. Declutter your apartment to evolve in a clearer and organized space - mens sana in corpo sano! The possibilities are almost infinite for you to broaden your mind: free your creativity on a canvas, sew your own clothes, spend some time with animals, watch your favorite comfort movies, and spread the beautiful colors and energy you have been keeping secret in your head for the past months! With a clear mind, you will be able to see the world with fresh new eyes, grasp things with better perception, and feel the earth tremble under your feet.

TOO MUCH SOCIAL PRESSURE WOULD MAKE YOU THINK THAT YOUR VERY OWN BODY IS TABOO. WELL, AS A REMINDER, IT IS NOT. RELEASE THE TENSION. Your body is probably screaming for help after the long days you have spent working hard. No worries, it is time to pamper yourself for a moment. Empowerment is all about feeling the best version of yourself, isn’t it? Release the stress with a consistent workout or stretching routine, drink a lot of water, and switch to a heartwarming yet balanced diet. Do not hesitate on the massage session you have been discussing with your BFF for months! It is your time to chill, cucumber slices on the eyes, clay mask in your hair, and cream on your skin! You will need an utterly relaxed version of yourself for the accomplished woman to-do list we have prepared for you. You probably do not want to hear it this raw and challenging, but it is a fact: your period won’t stop during summer. There are a few ways for you to feel amazing and simply not care! Why should you deprive yourself of the chocolate you are craving during your period? Why couldn’t you wear that little red dress because you are feeling bloated? Why would you prevent yourself from wearing an indented swimsuit because

you haven’t waxed your bikini line? Too much social pressure would make you think that your very own body is taboo. Well, as a reminder, it is not. You have the right to feel bad for a while because of your period, acne, hairs, stretch marks, or cellulite. And the one telling you they have never had any of these is a liar. Yes. Even men. Don’t let any shame take the place of your inner peace. Even if you let yourself go through a moment of weakness, be sure to come back stronger than ever. A little tip for our girls in pain: the Netflix documentary ‘Period. End of sentence.’ is a must watch for the way it depicts the normality of being a woman bleeding to repopulate the earth. We can not run from ourselves, so we have to learn who we are and the place we

There, you will have plenty of time to appreciate the cultural benefits and culinary specialties for our greedy readers! Los Angeles is a staple for a casual chic trip: soak in the sun and inhale the cool sea breeze of Santa Monica. Finally, head towards Kyoto if you want to learn more about the dying story of pure geishas! However, it is not always necessary to travel the world alone to empower yourself as a woman. time to go on new adventures—the kind of adventures that will give you the sensation to own the world. Have you ever thought of a parachute jump? The adrenalin spreads throughout your veins just before jumping in the vacuum, and the feeling of pride explodes once your feet touch back the floor. About the tattoo you have been eager to get for months: nothing would be more empowering than having the courage to engrave your skin with something that truly represents you. Your relatives have been hearing about your start-up projects for weeks: grab the opportunity of some wasted minutes to build your own empire! You have passed by the racing track of your city so many times that you can barely count them. It is time to step into it. Ask for a helmet, and jump in the racing car! We all have a list of the dreams we want to fulfill before dying: swimming with sharks, climbing on the Vesuvius, seeing the Niagara waterfalls… As a woman, you should not expect the permission or the approval of anybody to jump deep into the unknown. And the pride you will feel, the happiness of sharing a new story with your family and friends, and the bittersweet memories you will build are undeniably worth it! Finding your womanempowered style will be very easy this summer. Even if you are a somewhat shy

Give that look a personality: yours! You can still rely on more discrete materials: silver, gold, or rose gold which will give you all the class you need to make heads turn! Also, you can always count on pastel colors that will balance a cute and girly style and the peps of a confident woman. If you are more of an outthere woman, mixing patterns may be tricky but a choice to affirm your strong, bold personality. A musthave texture? Leather. Pair

mini leather shorts with absolutely anything, and you will be sure to attract attention to your much-empowered look! Some of us are fond of a hippie-chic style: turn yourself towards jean fabrics and warm camel colors. You can also add a couple of long necklaces. Layered, they will adorn your bust and do the job of the whole outfit. This way, you will look like a freespirited woman, ready to catch every opportunity life gives you to be happy! Instead of waiting for January 1st to make new resolutions, why not take them now, when summer is about to start? If wom-

Too dark or too light-skinned? Too big or too lean? Too prudish or too extravagant? You will always be too much of something for the people around you. Well, we suggest that you don’t let them walk past your limits because what they consider as your imperfections is actually what makes you unique in this world, and you should use that as a striking weapon to empower your true self.

Lila Nikole’s designs were so gorgeous we simply had to put them on our cover. So of course, we also wanted to take the opportunity to talk with her and dig a little deeper about her fashion aesthetic and plans for the future. The Lila Nikole Collection has established itself as one of the most commercially popular brands while still retaining its fashionforward credentials. She became a nationally recognized brand after her fourth appearance on BET’s Rip The Runway in 2013, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of visitors to her website and her continuous success made us wonder more about what drives her and what are the resort-wear trends she is fashioning for the rest of us. She was gracious enough to spend time with us and satisfy some of our curiosity about this immensely successful Latina woman. YOUR STORY HAS BEEN ONE OF CONSTANT GROWTH AND A TENACIOUS DESIRE FOR COMPASSIONATE SUCCESS; THIS HAS LED UP TO BEING THE FIRST LATIN COSTUME DESIGNER FOR THE SUPER BOWL HALF TIME SHOW FEATURING THE WEEKND; TELL US ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE? HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH AN ICONIC EVENT AND KNOWING THAT YOU WERE ALSO A ROLE MODEL TO THE LATIN COMMUNITY? I grew up in a home that loved football. Sunday was our day to connect as a family and watch the games. I was honored and so excited to be apart of such an iconic show. It was one of my favorite experiences as a designer. I’ve been blessed to work on some really cool projects, but this was the one I hold closest to my heart.

106

| AUGUST 2021

LAST APRIL YOUR COSTUMES ENTERED THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, WHICH IS AN ENORMOUS TRIBUTE TO YOUR WORK, WHAT IS THE NEXT MOUNTAIN TO TACKLE FOR YOU? I went to the opening ceremony for the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. What an honor to see my costumes side by side with Prince, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix and Madonna. Music is how I am inspired when I design. I listen to music and see colors and ideas start to roll. So needleless to say, it was such an amazing experience to be included in the halls of legends that inspire me every day! YOU STARTED OUT DESIGNING AND CREATING SWIMWEAR FOR FELLOW STUDENTS IN YOUR COLLEGE DAYS, WHAT DREW YOU SPECIFICALLY TO SWIM/RESORT WEAR? I actually went to school to learn some of the basics for fashion design I never went or expected to be in the swimwear industry. the goal has always been to do costume design for TV and movies. I was just really good at it, lol. Students would buy my pieces and it stumbled into a business. I never thought this is where I would be building an empire, but it works. So I ran with it. YOU ARE KNOWN FOR BEING FRESH, FUNKY AND ALWAYS EVOLVING; WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR EVERFAVORITE RESORT AND FASHION TRENDS? I love street wear, so I try incorporate silhouettes and pieces that can translate from beach to day wear. Same with our glam items, we carry so many items that can be paired with some heels and a skirt, transitioning into a beautiful dinner/ cocktail wardrobe. I try to incorporate elements that are stand out pieces, I have never been a fan or boring classic items, so we jam as much funky in as possible.

IN THIS POST-PANDEMIC WORLD, THE LINE GROWS THINNER EVERYDAY BETWEEN WEARING FORMAL AND INFORMAL ATTIRE AS WELL AS THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY AND THE FASHION WORLD; HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR BRAND CHANGING TO MEET NEW CUSTOMER DEMANDS? Our brand has always been created with our loyal customers in mind. We know what they want, we listen and continue to add pieces that are geared towards their needs. We also have multiple silhouettes that cater to various body types, allowing a male or women to feel their best in pieces that flatter and enhance their best assets. YOU ARE ALSO KNOWN FOR YOUR CHARITIES AND EMPHASIS ON GIVING BACK, WHAT WAS THE DRIVER FOR YOUR “PROJECT SAVE IMAGINATION” CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION? Project Save imagination was born in a conversation amongst friends. We were chatting about the need for music and arts education. These programs are chopped heavily in the education system. Our goal is to help provide the tools and education to children who may not have access to it. We have professionals who step forward to teach classes, mentor as well as bring much needed supplies and funds to children and care facilities. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR EXTRAORDINARILY SUCCESSFUL CAREER IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD HAVE EMPHASIZED MORE OR EVEN LESS? I would do it exactly the same, all of my errors and strides help bring me knowledge, tenacity and hunger. It was never an easy ride but it helped build my character. I needed those ups and downs to land right where I am now! Every year is better and better. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
