I
was born and raised in the middle of Brazil. And I want to be blunt: there was nothing going on during my teenage years. Brasília is a city where most of the economy is driven by the slow and bureaucratic government and where most of the people came from different parts of the country. There was a lack of identity at those early days. Designed by modern architect Oscar Niemeyer, it was a planned, futuristic city full of concrete and solitude. But being raised in the de facto country of the magical carnival, I used to watch it every year from my TV. And I always found it boring, I could never understand the buzz, the sweat and the craziness around it. Many years later, while living in the wonderful city of Rio, I had the chance to experience it in real life. Not having much money to spend, I got a ticket far off from the front rows, but at least I was able to enjoy the big picture, its full majesty. I then understood the magnitude of things: the costumes, the colors in the runway, the huge crowd, the loud music, fireworks, the energy - it was a magical summer I would never forget. Back to the present time, I knew this month we would have to focus on fashion weeks and all the repercussions of the novel coronavirus. Technology was able to bring us closer to the show in near real-time assuring our safety, and it’s undeniably positive. But it reminded me of watching carnival from my sad TV. Physical shows do bring our emotions out, there is no way to compare. While I believe streaming makes fashion and information more democratic overall, we must find a way to make it more exciting. The novel coronavirus was definitely a reform much needed for us to think more closely about human relationships, business models, sustainability, upcycling, better use of technologies, etc. It is sad, but now many of those countries that hosted physical fashion shows are facing another phase of shutdown. For now, let’s make the best out of it and hope the word phygital is banned from our dictionaries in the next year. I humbly dedicate this issue to Mr. Kenzo Takada.

THE BEAUTY OF RECYCLED
T
HE H&M FALL FASHION 2020 COLLECTION FEATURES cherished wardrobe heroes inspired by beautifully crafted lace dresses from the 1930s. The eight piece collection incorporates vintage details such as mutton sleeves and ruffles in modern, voluminous cuts. The lace, jacquard and wool in the collection are made from more sustainably sourced materials, reflecting H&M’s continuing commitment to a more sustainable fashion future. The collection is yet another step towards H&M´s goal to only use recycled and sustainably sourced materials by 2030. Today, 57% of the materials H&M use are organic, recycled or sustainably sourced. The new season is about finding power in timeless designs. The collection emphasises this by blending vintage silhouettes with a fashion-forward modernity in dress lengths that range from mini to maxi and a full-length double-breasted coat. High necklines, lace inserts and mutton sleeves are reinterpreted for today, while lace, jacquard and wool are reimagined in innovative recycled fabrics. The whole collection is proudly built around more sustainably sourced materials – the recycled polyester, recycled nylon and recycled wool come from textile waste, plastic waste or a mix between them – giving new life to old PET bottles, old garments or textile off-cuts.

MICHAEL KORS CELEBRATES THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY
MORE EXCITEMENT FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY
EANING INTO THE RENEWED SENSE OF CONNECTION and spirit of community inspired by the global pandemic, Kors looked closer to home to cast the talent for his latest Watch Hunger Stop campaign, the brand’s long-running philanthropic initiative in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The special-edition designs are adorned with a red love heart patch. All profits from the sale go to WFP.
AIPEI FASHION WEEK OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THE theme for its upcoming multimedia extravaganza taking place in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park from Oct 6-10. A portmanteau of two words, Reconnect and Next, RE:CONNEXT conveys the industry’s hopes for reconnecting and reconstructing the future, after sustained blows by the pandemic. It will be an artful blend of virtual and physical events. The theme wants to combine the two terms of “Reconnect and Next”, expecting that the disconnected fashion industries will be connected again, constructing interpersonal and recovering industries, thinking about the next step of fashion in the post-epidemic era, and reflecting on how we can use the power of fashion creativities to look to the future. Taipei will keep a classic runway show, but will also incorporate the most innovative digital exhibition experiences as well. The show will combine multimedia arts, VR technology and Taiwanese aborigines performances. This year will bring in a far more public audience than usual at a major fashion show, using the power of social media platforms. The show will feature brands from: ALLENKO3, JEAN, Dleet, DOUCHANGLEE, GIOAI PAN, if&n, INF, Luxxury Godbage by JUST IN XX, oqLiq, Seivson, SHIATZY CHEN, SILZENCE men, Syzygy, WEAVISM, WEIYU HUNG, and #DAMUR.
L
“Now, in the face of this global pandemic, we see just how interconnected we all are, and this reinforced my belief that we all want to do good and make a difference in the world,” says Kors. This year includes a special Instagram effect
called “Share Your Heart,” allowing people to share their support. Each Instagram post, video or Reel using the “Share Your Heart” filter triggers a donation of 50 meals to WFP. Now in its eighth year, Michael Kors’ Watch Hunger Stop campaign is focused specifically on helping WFP provide much-needed school meals to children in foodinsecure regions of the world. It’s exciting to announce that this year, Watch Hunger Stop reached the major milestone of delivering 20 million school meals — an achievement made possible by the extraordinary support and generosity of friends all over the world.

THE BEAUTY OF GODDESSES
In a time where there is so much darkness and hate, Lila shares with us love and light BY KARO DELGOBBO
T
HIS MONTH WE WERE KINDLY INVITED BY CELEBRITY swimwear designer Lila Nikole to check out one of her many gorgeous photoshoots, inspired by beautiful brown skin goddesses. As she says, “beauty is defined by the diversity of our skin tones, the history that created who we are, the story of our ancestors, the unity of love in being who you are, and the acceptance of us all, with no rules or boundaries, united as one”. Lila dedicated this photoshoot to women of different cultures and backgrounds to highlight the importance of brown skin during times where adversity is on the rise. “We are using our voice to show the unity amongst us all, the divine elegance of unique shades of golden brown
skin, the bounce in her curls, and the divine features and structures of her face. We proudly boast the cultural mix of creators who came together to bring this project forward”. Lila incorporates her Latin heritage, South Florida roots and love for music into the design concepts and themes, supplying fresh new swimwear styles and durable garments made with wearability and flattering silhouettes to ensure comfort and appeal. Every suit is made with the customer in mind and in the nature of giving back as well. Being involved with many charities and foundations Lila Nikole understands that success is not just about what one can achieve for themselves, but also how well they serve others.

Phygital shows power on across the globe despite the effects of the pandemic, bringing together digital streams blended with live physical shows, with social distance protocols. The lockdown provided time for brands to rethink, for those who are tuned in. But by and large, it’s more about the reality of things rather than fashion, and survival might be the better norm for now.

FATTO A MANO IN SICILY Dolce & Gabbana celebrates union,

A
CHAOTIC TURMOIL OF WARM COLORS, MESMERIZING PATTERNS and intense details that span decades mixed all together, that’s Dolce & Gabbana’s spring/summer 2021. The incredible 98-look collection named “Patchwork from Sicily” celebrates the spirit of union created by artisans’ hands of different colors. Like always, the richness and contrasts of the island of Sicily brings an unique source of inspiration for the fashion powerhouse. “We realised that in ’93 we had already done this type of work, taking inspiration from a completely different world, which was the ‘70s. So we went into the archive and we recreated the same jacket, the same vest, the same skirt, the same shirt, the same trouser.” explained Stefano Gabbana. Dolmenico Dolce also emphasized the idea of patchwork as repurposing. Using previous collections and supporting artists to embed old pieces and recreating a fresh and modern look, passing down clothing and style to the next upcoming generations.

A UTOPIAN WORLD
Ruled by Medusa, Versacepolis is where mythology meets the reality in a world full of colors and optimism
W
HAT WOULD TOMORROW LOOK like? Versace this season dreamt of an utopian underwater world, populated with strong and confident men and women, reborn after the lockdown and ready to reshape the post-pandemic reality. “I wanted to create something disruptive, something that could be in tune with what has changed inside all of us. To me that meant dreaming of a new world. A world made of popping colors and fantastic creatures and a world in which we can all coexist peacefully”, explained Donatella Versace. The collection was full of bright neon colors and aquatic prints, focusing on an empowered attitude that looks into the future with optimism and hope. Versace also took a step forward on inclusion, having Jill Kortleve, Alva Claire, and Precious Lee as the first plus-size models to walk Donatella’s runway.

THE TINIEST SHOW ON EARTH Every little detail perfectly executed in Moschino’s whimsical collection
W
EEKS BEFORE THE LOCKDOWN BECAME A TOUGH REALITY, JEREMY Scott had already decided that his Moschino collection would celebrate the virtues of haute couture. After the quarantine was installed, Scott anticipated that a face-to-face runway show would be very difficult to happen. Anticipating the uncertainties, he sought out Theater de La Mode, the troupe of miniature haute couture creations that Paris designers sent out after the Second World War to save their business from financial collapse and somehow reach customers who could not travel. He then contacted Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the same creator of the acclaimed Muppets. Jeremy wanted to give the same experience and magic that the guests have when watching their live shows together. With Creature Shop, he turned his favorite model into puppets and reduced the forty looks that were first created in real size to dress up thirty inches dolls that walked to the sound of soft violins. Jeremy also reproduced famous front-row fashion editors as guests. Jeremy took a chance, as this was a huge undertaking project and, actually more expensive than an ordinary fashion show. He made up his mind back in April even if things would return back to normal with physical shows. It turned out magical, a must-see.

FLOWERS NEVER DIE
ELIPE OLIVEIRA BAPTISTA, THE PORTUGUESE CREATIVE DIrector never had so many questions and mixed feelings before. We couldn’t agree more, no one has the answers, the world is not linear and there are too many things out of order now. “The world is crying, so are the flowers in all the prints we have developed for the collection. Archival Kenzo poppies and hortensias were given a digital crying effect”, mentioned Felipe. But just like the flowers presented on the runway, we mourn the recent loss of Kenzo Takada, the designer who brought Japanese fashion to the world. Mr Takada left us from complications of the novel coronavirus.

WOMAN VS TECHNOLOGY Prada’s virtual show opens the dialog to duality and plurality
AF SIMONS’ DEBUT as Miuccia Prada’s co-creative director was definitely challenging. In a year that many were forced to embrace technology, Prada opens a dialog between ourselves and information. “During the lockdown, I realised how important technology is and how it’s impactful for us and in some ways an extension of ourselves,” explained. Cameras and screens decorate the venue like chandeliers while also recording the show and displaying the models names, who walked for Prada for the first time. Prada did not save on branding. It jumped on the logomania bandwagon and applied it everywhere.

RE-EMERGENCE & CREATION Michael Halpern celebrates frontline worker heroines

OR SPRING/SUMMER 2021, HALPERN PAYS TRIBute to the heroines of the frontline. Captured in film and portraits, eight women from across the public service sectors reflect on their work during the lockdown period. Michael Halpern created two looks for each of his muses, inspired by their individuality, courage, and joie de vivre. The looks – largely constructed in-house – draw on the silhouettes, technique, and fabrication native to haute couture.

“To me, times of re-emergence call for pure creation: the most uplifting feeling I can think of. I didn’t design this collection with cocktail parties or ballrooms in mind, but purely from the desire to capture in dressmaking the individuality embodied by savoir-fair, and the joy it brings to those who wear it. This collection was created in celebration of the women on the frontline, and for anyone it may inspire and uplift”, explains Michael Halpern.

ARIS’ GRAND PALAIS WAS ONE MORE TIME THE venue for Chanel’s new thematic show, featuring huge Hollywood-inspired white letters as the background. Before the show started, we were teased with videos produced by the power duo Inez and Vinnodh, bringing us back to the silver screen, but now modernized with the muses Mica Argañaraz, Rianne Van Rompaey and Louise de Chevigny, each captured in beautiful cinematic scenes. “This collection is a tribute to the muses of the House… Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld dressed so many actresses in films and in real life. I was thinking about them who make us dream so much. But without wanting to replicate.

Without falling into a vintage citation. I wanted it to be very joyful, colorful, and very vibrant too”, explained Virginie Viard. Virginie brought a new sense of youth and fresh air, with additions to entice a new generation: bright neon-light shirts with the Chanel logo, asymmetric dresses, pink bubblegum denim, miniature chanel bag belts (yes, we need those right now!), a lot of accessories including CC watches, hair bands, phone lanyards, pearl belts and chains. Layering was definitely one of the trends in the runway. The classic Chanel designs were there as well for the more traditional customers, more in monochrome, with the classic elegance that the brand is always able to deliver.

BRING BACK THE FEVER In no such way you could miss these epic pagoda shoulders
O
LIVIER ROUSTEING STRONGLY BELIEVES THAT no matter what, live experiences truly bring emotions and they’re so crucial for the highly impacted fashion industry. Besides the nightmare we are all going though, Balmain brought us a strong collection with remarkable and hypnotizing mix of unissex pagoda shoulders, with much bling as well - artisans embroidered two million upcycled Swarovski crystals on many of the pieces. The strong shoulders are his response to waist-up dressing in the videoconferencing era. The designer celebrated its 75th anniversary with an amazing open-air production in the Jardin des Plantes, where the live audience joined a bank of screens for the virtual A-list front row guests that included JLo and Cindy Crawford, along with a global crowd via social media.

EVERYDAY AVANTGARDE 50
| OCTOBER 2020
Paco Rabanne is no stranger to avant-garde, dating back to the designer’s first collection in 1966. Conceived by Julien Dossena, this collection is a garde-robe of looks that are instinctive rather than declarative. Individuality surfaces as an extreme remix of wearable pieces. The statement is visibly less formal but technically precise – an undoing of stylistic archetypes to arrive at a deliberately destabilized allure. Each look suggests an association of ideas that are as likely to be counterintuitive as complementary.

A reflection on societal transformations, or a reaction to current events, as Christian Dior described it in his autobiography
I
NTERACTION WITH OTHER women was the key to envision this collection and provide a response at these unprecedented times. Troubled times require strong designs, but also most importantly, to provide more comfort for the modern woman by reinterpreting iconic Dior silhouettes from a new point of view. “The collage aspect is very much present in the collection. It is not just tied to the shapes, but also to the study of the fabrics, where elements of several cultures come together to celebrate the history of textiles and how this history reflects the history of humanity”, explains Maria Grazia Chiuri, Creative Director of Dior women’s collections. And that was the idea: to mix elements from different cultures that share similarities like chiné and ikat, portraying what lies beyond fashion.

NATURE IN BLOOM Newness, freshness and cleansing: a tale of regeneration through the circular nature of water
F
OR BURBERRY’S SPRING/SUMMER 2021 COLLECtion named In Bloom, Riccardo Tisci, Burberry Chief Creative Officer, celebrates the emblems and hallmarks of the fashion house – its character, its nature, its unique DNA, and remasters them with a dynamic modern energy. Inviting the internationally acclaimed artist Anne Imhof to collaborate, Riccardo has curated a unique show experience – a play of aesthetics, ideologies and tensions, between unbridled natural instincts and focused precision, between rules and rebellion. “The collection is focused and refined – one vision, one story. This is the essence of both Burberry’s identity and my own creativity. Reaffirming the codes of Burberry – my codes of Burberry, our DNA”, explains Riccardo. Burberry has always offered the freedom to explore the new and the unknown – these times suggest a redress, a reset, a new way of thinking.
54
| OCTOBER 2020
Riccardo explores the power of fashion to communicate, to move and to evoke emotion. He presents a modern mythology, a contemporary fairy tale in the deep ocean, a love story blooms between a mermaid and a shark, darkly romantic and unexpected. The sea, always beautiful, sometimes savage, invariably romantic, inspires the clothing. It reflects a multifaceted view of Britain – simultaneously rural and urban, spanning earth and ocean, always expressing freedom. Burberry’s DNA is historically tied to water. Water itself is symbolic of renewal, regeneration, changing tides and hope springing eternal. Today, it also represents freedom – a release, an escape, the excitement of new and unknown environments to explore. Great expanses, distant horizons, from which new life blooms. For Spring/Summer 2021, Burberry writes a new chapter of a mythology made in modern times.

Fashion shows face a new conundrum: the excess and waste of resources from the physical and the lack of interest from the digital experience. Something creative needs to emerge, seeking a sweet spot in between physical and digital. In the postpandemic world, the show must go on, and the future needs to be reshaped but in a more meaningful and yet exciting manner.

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMOROW BY LISA OPIE
D
ID YOU KNOW THAT FALL IS THE BEST TIME TO START a laser hair removal treatment? The reason for this is because this process takes several months, and sun exposure is strictly not allowed during a laser hair removal treatment. Sun exposure before or after a laser hair removal treatment can burn your skin and cause discoloration. Now that we are in October, this is the perfect time to start a laser treatment. Here are some things you need to know about laser hair removal. 1. There are many lasers that can be used to remove hair, and each laser type has different strengths, works on certain skin tones and types, and offers different results. Your laser technician will know which laser type is best for you. 2. You can’t remove gray hairs. Once your hair is gray, the laser will have problems detecting the follicle and can not permanently remove the hair. 3. It takes multiple sessions to get “permanent” results. Even after a year of consistent removal, certain factors like hormones, age, environment, and diet can re-stimulate hair growth.

GET GLAM WITH MISS EARTH USA 2020 I spent the month of September working with our reigning USA queen, Lindsey Coffey to create her looks to film her competition for the virtual Miss Earth pageant. BY LISA OPIE
FACE I used L’Oreal TrueMatch foundation and the Urban Decay Stay Naked concealer to highlight the high points of her face. I used the shade Wig Cap from the SNATCHED by LadyCode face palette to contour and bronze her forehead, cheekbones, and jawline. I used the shade Fillers from the same palette to add a peachy blush, and tapped on the shade Halo to give her a glow.
BROWS As a trendsetting queen, Linsdey loves the spiky brow look-and so do I! To get this look, use a brow gel like the Mister Brow Groom from Givenchy Beauty to sweep the brows straight up on the inner points of the brow. As you comb through, start angling the brush outward so that the tail end of the brows are gradually brushed out horizontally. This technique will create a more effortless look. Fill in any gaps between the “spikes” with a brow pencil, pomade, or pen.
LIPS My go-to lip color for Lindsey is the LadyCode shop gloss shades Paris with Tokyo in the middle to highlight the lips and add dimension.
EYE LOOK 1 For this natural soft glam, I used the SNATCHED Face Palette from the LadyCode shop for her eyes and face. I started with the eyes by defining her crease with the shade Wig Cap, and then adding depth with the shade Spray Tan. I smoked out her lash line with the shade Influence, and highlighted her lids with the matte shade: That One Time I Went Blonde. I topped it all off with Aquarius lashes from the LadyCode Shop.
EYE LOOK 2 To amp up the glam, I used a coppery shimmer shade and swept it over the lids and then blended it out into the crease with the shade Spray Tan from the SNATCHED face palette. I winged out her eyeliner on the inner and outer corner of her eyes to give her a more sultry look. For lashes, I used Gemini from the LadyCode Shop. ODERN DAYS, SO PROMISING. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, AUTOMAtion, augmented reality, faster speeds for a faster and more enjoyable life. Powerful technologies right at our hands to consume more information, goods and services at a faster than ever. But at many times, I wonder if this reality really brings all the joy promised. From the ads, it’s nirvana: perfect, flawless, ubiquitous. Don’t get me wrong, I truly believe continuous progress is key for a better society. And amongst all the social media showoff, hate speeches, unnecessary and manipulated posts, a gem from the land of the rising sun shone upon me. That’s how I met Takahiro Sato, or Tak for close friends - who I already consider being one. His story starts like no different than many of us dreamt of. Tak used to run his own design company - who doesn’t want to be their own boss and be a successful entrepreneur? However, businesses are not born overnight, they need a lot of dedication, sleepless nights and our hearts and souls. And for years, Tak gave everything he could, he overworked himself and slowly distanced from his beloved ones. In the following years, a deadly disaster and the bankrupcy of a key business parter would change his mindset forever. Back in 2013, the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1,134 workers and injuring approximately 2,500. Some of the reasons included addition of more floors above the original permit with substandard construction materials, overload of the building structure, vibration of heavy machinery, and dubious practices from owners, who manufactured apparel for many important brands including Benetton, Prada, Gucci and Versace. All of that to satisfy the continuous demands of fast fashion and low-cost clothing. It made Tak deeply think about this practice in fashion. At the time he had just been married and they had a son who was diagnosed with moderate mental disability and autism. After Tak closed his business due to overwork, the added stress of not having an income affected his marriage, so they both decided to follow different paths and his son went living with her.

This was a very hard time for Tak, he felt like he had failed his family and his business, but he didn’t want to be that kind of father for his son. This is what ignited him towards a new business. He didn’t want himself or his son to ever wear clothing made by someone else’s pain and tears. By the way. the workers who have died were living on less than 45 US dollars a month. He made up his mind that his new business should be an ethical brand that values transparency with customers so that everyone, the artisans, the customers, and everyone can be happy and feel good about what they’re doing. That also means fair compensation and fair schedules for workers. So he started Kuden, an ethical and sustainable clothing brand. Tak’s design is an original and the fabric he chose to go with the design is special, a fabric that only a few sewing companies have the knowledge to handle. And with a new business, new challenges. What should he create? What would be his inspiration? He turned back to his roots: his own mother. Tak went back to his parents house where his mother used to live. Since it currently wasn’t in use he thought he could use it as a sort of office and warehouse for his new business. While organizing the home he came across her kimono, her pedal sewing machine, and his old kimono he once wore to a traditional Japanese ceremony called Shichi-Go-San 「七五三」. He remembered

how his mother would dance around and sew the kimonos by herself. And it made him want to wear kimonos again. Now, to wear a traditional Japanese kimono, there’s a certain technique on how to put it on correctly called Kitsuke 「着 付け」. It’s a dying art and Tak didn’t know anyone around him who knew how to do it, which led to him to become more interested in kimonos because he didn’t want to waste the very good kimono that he had in his hands. This was the first time that he thought about what could be done as a designer to incorporate the old, traditional kimono into our modern day life. While researching and learning more about the traditional kimono, he learned that the kimono industry is in decline and he thought about what he could do to help, how he could expand the kimono market. This is when he came up with the idea to make a kimono for beginners by removing the Kitsuke technique and just going straight to wearing the kimono. He wanted people to get the feel of the kimono first, gain some interest, and then work their way up to the traditional kimono. Aside from the aspect of learning how to properly put on a kimono, there was also the aspect of it not being very convenient to wear in our busy modern day life. There’s also the matter of climate and because of global warming, the temperature, especially in the summer, goes up higher, therefore making it difficult to wear all the layers

of clothing that come with the traditional kimono. This is when he came up with the “Next Kimono” concept, a kimono that is easy to put on and also comfortable to wear in our current climate. Tak hopes that by wearing the “Next Kimono” people will be inspired to try wearing the traditional kimono. This will create more business for the kimono industry and will keep the beautiful kimono culture alive for more generations to come. Kuden holds three fundamental pillars in its mission: the employment of people with disabilities, continuing the traditional culture of the Japanese kimono, and protecting the environment as well as high technique sewing companies. However, it would not be complete without core family values. Tak wishes to work together with his son and to employ people with disabilities. He currently took a step forward collaborating with Hanpu Studio YUI, an organization in Yamaguchi, Japan that works with people with disabilities to make stylish shoulder bags: “no matter how small, I’m happy to help create jobs for the disabled”. better understand why they are unsuitable to wear for everyday use. He learned that they were hard to clean and difficult to wear so his three goals for his design were easy to take care of, easy to wear, but still keeps the traditional beautiful shape. After coming up with multiple designs, Tak was able to recreate the traditional kimono with only three parts: the shirt, the pants, and the jacket compared to the 12 layers the traditional kimono has. Another similarity is the tamoto, a very memorable part of the kimono, the part of the sleeves that hangs down. For those of you who have worn a kimono before, you know that it can be in the way sometimes but Tak kept this part in his design on purpose. There are many different theories as to why the kimono has this potentially bothersome tamoto in the first place but Tak believes it’s because of “shosa”. Shosa is expressing the beauty of movement, therefore, with the fabric hanging under the arms that is the tamoto, any action you do or take using your arms looks graceful and elegant. The kimono, already beautiful, becomes even more beautiful by the actions people take while wearing it. That is why Tak decided to keep the tamoto in his design.

ND IF TAK COULD FIGURE OUT A WAY TO REDESIGN THE KIMONO for everyday use, more people can incorporate it into their daily lives and enjoy the kimono. That is when he came up with his newest design, the JUBAN shirt. It can be worn by itself and still give off the full effect of wearing the kimono but can also be paired with Tak’s other designs for a more authentic feel. It has a beautiful corset in the back which not only looks amazing but it’s practical. As you can see from the side, it is meant to show off the “S” shape silhouette of that of the traditional kimono dressed by “Kitsukeshi.” P H OTO C R E D I T S M O D E L : M I S A M A RU P H OTO G R A P H E R : N O BU Y U K I A R A I

However, the most enjoyable part of the JUBAN is the Han-eri, the decorated collar. One part about the traditional kimono that he wanted to keep in his own design was the part that the traditional kimono is customizable. For example you can switch the belt for a different color or pattern for a different vibe as you can with the collar area. Tak incorporated the interchangeable collar in his design where you can mix different colors or patterns of collars and attach them via velcro to your shirt. By doing this, you can style your shirt in many different ways plus the shirt itself will last longer since the collar area tends to become dirty easily. Tak says his staff and customers always have fun mixing and matching the different colors and patterns of the shirt and the collar together to see what combination they like best to freely express themselves through the modern kimono. By the way, the decorated collar is also upcycled from old kimonos that were not worn due to stains.

Clothes not only affect the way other people see us but can also affect the way we feel about ourselves. Tak lives each day to the fullest by balancing being a manager, designer, and father but sometimes he can become discouraged by pressure and expectations. During these times Tak likes to put on the Samurai designs because it makes him feel like he has the strong samurai spirit. This is why he named the collection “Samurai,” so that we could also feel the same strength. The Japanese samurai is known for being strong and having a solid belief in himself and his values so by wearing this samurai design, Tak also hopes that you will feel the same strength and confidence in your everyday life whether it be at work when you’re working hard to support your family or just an ordinary day when you just need that small boost of confidence. “For all the people in the world regardless of age, nationality, or gender, I am happy if they wear my clothes,” says Tak. Tak wants his design to be the trigger that brings people to the traditional kimono. He can already see himself opening fashion shows in Milan, Paris and New York someday. One thing I can guarantee: I already placed my order. And I think you should do that too. E N J OY M O R E P H OTO S O F K U D E N ’ S N E W P RO D U C T L AU N C H I N T H E N E X T PA G E S !

THE ETERNAL GUARDIAN Can luxury jewelry keep its handcrafted traditions and raise awarenesss for social issues at the same time? Seeun Kim achieves it majestically BY ERIKA ISHIBASHI
T
HE HUMAN HAND IS A GIFT FROM HUMAN EVOLUTION - that’s what Seen Seeun Kim believes. She prides herself in pushing the importance and uniqueness of handmade jewelry. “Every piece of handmade jewelry has a story. Every piece is different and unique, there is an art there that a machine cannot create,” she says. With advanced technologies coming every day into our lives, such as Computer AidedDesign and 3D printing, handcrafted products will possess an exceptional and remarkable rareness compared to mass-produced products. “There is an inexpressible complexity in the handicraft world that a machine cannot imitate”, adds Seeun. Originally from South Korea and currently based in the UK, she has been creating jewelry for 9 years, graduating from HikoMizuno College of Jewelry in Japan where she studied traditional Japanese handcraft skills. ODAY, AS THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR MODERN PEOPLE IMproves, the younger generation is becoming increasingly inclined to prefer expensive luxury goods; thus, expensive jewellery and ornaments have become a symbol of luxury and vanity. But we all live in a modern society where we’re all in a rush and many important things are left behind, so Seeun thought of delivering a message to protect the cultural heritage of our ancestors. In the Three Kingdom period of Korea, the development of ornaments was subdivided, and today we can see the extensive history of metal crafts. Among them, the Silla period can be said to be the golden age of the development of Korean ornaments. Silla is the country in which the most brilliant metal culture flourished, and the metal work was prominent in both quantity and quality. Various types of metal products were produced. In the Silla period, science and technology were also highly developed, and metal processing techniques such as metallurgy, gold, copper working and plating were developed significantly. Moreover, ceramics and lacquers were exported to China and Japan as Silla’s special products. 100 will mean a lot to us today. I think the number 100 does not simply mean a natural number greater than 99 and less than 101, but it means perfection, maturity, and preparation for what comes next. Furthermore, I think it is a number that represents society. Water can boil from 100 degrees Celsius; in other words, it is in one state up to 99 degrees, but it generates energy from one degree higher. I think that our society is still at the same level as the number 99 because the people of today have forgotten the value of the cultural heritage of our ancestors”, says Seeun. Just like Seeun, I also firmly believe that if modern society respects and preserves diverse cultural heritages, it can better understand cultural and social backgrounds, which will provide an opportunity to reflect about our own actions, expand our horizons and evolve as a whole.

THE BRAILLE PROJECT
H
ER WORK GOES DEEPER THAN JUST SIMPLY SPREADING knowledge about handmade jewelry versus machine made jewelry. She has been using her jewelry to also raise awareness for various social issues. The goal for her work is to not just be jewelry, she wants it to tell a story. She felt a strong need to help the people around her but wasn’t sure how she could help directly. However, instead of giving up, she turned to what she did best: making jewelry. She has been using her handmade jewelry and her platform to raise awareness for the disabled. She recently collaborated with the National Health System in England where her “Braille Object Project” and “Sign Language Object Project” were displayed. She has such a heart for all people and feels the responsibility as a member of society to do her part in creating a better future for and giving hope to those in need through her creations. “Even if you don’t have the money to donate, you can always create something and raise awareness using your art”. The Braille collection highlighted the importance of another way of communication rather than simply speaking and listening, using braille as a form of semiotics to recognize the importance of intangible factors in a modern society. “Have you considered the disadvantaged citizens in our society? Have you ever tried to communicate with them?”, questions Seeun. Seeun knows her calling in life is to create jewelry. Not only has she persevered through various terrorist attacks while living in England, she also experienced the devastating earthquake that hit Japan in 2011. Despite everything going on around her, she has stayed true to her art and she fully intends on doing this for the rest of her life, hoping to be able to reach out to more and more people all while continuing to raise awareness and doing her part as a member of society.

Three styling students, six looks and one challenge: to style an editorial and show us that fashion and sustainability should walk hand in hand. “Styling is a class that has to be connected with the real world and the fashion industry as much as possible. For this reason, a photoshoot is always the highlight of the term, when students put together everything they have learned plus all the pre-production involved before the actual shoot. In this particular case, the students had to style the creations of 5 emerging fashion designers that are graduating from MIU and that were presented at the Paraiso Miami Swim Week, competing for the best design for the Upcycle Challenge, which partners big names in the fashion industry with talented students from different fashion schools. - Juanita Crary

SAVE THE OCEANS Even mermaids would be trapped in a fishing net. Whimsical elements like glass jellyfish, dead starfish and seashells were added in order to give organic elements to the entire look, making it very romantic and dreamy. The cautionary tale behind them is that even mythical creatures will end up caught with all the rest of the wildlife that is destroyed daily because of indiscriminate fishing. On this page, the strappy elements and the neon colors created a narrative of a modern beach cleaner who is ready to get rid of trash from the beach in a fashionable approach. GOLDEN INTERSECTION Plastic is all around us and it has become a damaging intruder in our environment. The intention is to raise awareness of its negative impact by showcasing how plastic materials now have a permanent presence in nature. The looks feature up-cycled parts, from both natural materials and man-made ones. The swimsuit short was redesigned from donated fabric from Perry Ellis and the flowers had been previously discarded before being upcycled into an accessory. The yellow net represents a solely man-made material, with a prior use in the fishing industry, that serves as the liaison between the other dimensions of the look. It represents an intersection between the flowers (nature aspect) and the swimsuit (industrial up-cycled aspect), exposing how normal we waste industrial products, just like if they were natural materials.

PLASTIC EVERYTHING Every single item used in the image has been borrowed, lend by someone, or taken from Juanita and Danny Santigo’s archive, and it’s all made of plastic. Pretty much like the main material we’re usually recycling but failing to because of the large demand for recycling plants that according to science, won’t be enough to recycle all the plastic that we’ve created. The idea was to emphasize on wearing plastic, keeping it and reusing it, upcycling it, and looking dramatic, vintagey, and colorful without spending a penny on a new item. The main inspiration was a trailer park beauty having fun

THE AGE OF PLASTIC Plastic bags highly affect the ocean and its living creatures, reminding us of the harm of single-use, everyday use items. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, only 1% of plastic bags are returned for recycling, that means that the average family only recycles 15 bags a year and the rest end up in landfills or as litter; 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags annually; plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes; it takes 500 (or more) years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately the bags don’t break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.

INESS Bahia that won’t leave my mind Located in the exuberant northeast coast of Brazil, the state of Bahia has many paradisiac secrets to be uncovered. Discover Trancoso, one of Brazil’s most exclusive beach villages. BY TAMARA ALMEIDA
T
HE POET WAS RIGHT: “BAHIA THAT WON’T LEAVE MY mind”. The verse from Ary Barroso’s song “Na Baixa do Sapateiro”, is how I describe Trancoso, a district in the Brazilian municipality of Porto Seguro, state of Bahia, which has existed since the 16th century, when the Jesuits built a camp on the top of the hill: simple houses lined up on one side and the other, with a white church on the edge of the cliff, with your back to the sea. It has about 3,420 inhabitants. One of the most beautiful places in all of the state of Bahia, small and charming, hard not to fall in love. Trancoso’s main square is named “Quadrado” (square), with its colorful houses, they compose Trancoso’s postcard - the square is magical with its mixture of culture and art. Doors
are always open, there’s always a fresh breeze that renews our hearts and souls, and you can choose restaurants between Brazilian and international cuisines with a local touch. Quiet during the day and perfect for a dinner at night, it is definitely paradisiac to enjoy a good drink and listen to Brazilian music by candlelight. There is also a viewpoint behind the little church to appreciate all the majesty of a cinematic sunset. The beaches are the strongest features of the city. The beautiful waters next to coconut and almond trees attract tourists who seek to rest and enjoy the breathtaking landscape. With white soft sand, natural pools, summer breeze and seafood, there are several beaches that are worth visiting during your stay in Trancoso.

BEACHES Trancoso’s beaches have a lot of variety in terms of sea color and waves. You can find blue and calm sea, or cloudy and choppy, at any time of the year, depending on sea currents, atmospheric conditions and recent rainfall. In general, however, it is more likely to catch blue and calm beaches in summer. • Coqueiros (central) • Rio Verde (south) • Pedra Grande (south) • Itapororoca and Patimirim (south) • Itaquena (south) • Nativos (north) • Rio da Barra (north)

TARTARUGAS BEACH

ESPELHO BEACH - Perhaps the most famous in the region, which is always on the list of every tourist who sets foot in the city. The “mirror beach” has several shades of reflected coconut trees, and is one of the most beauti-
ful in all of Bahia. The low tide sea and natural pools offer a view of the colorful corals for those who practice snorkeling. There are diving services and boat trips as well, but even a visit for a walk in the sand to gaze at the sea is already an unforgettable experience. TARTARUGAS BEACH - “Turtles beach” is the most exclusive beach in the region. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Quadrado square during the high season in Trancoso, spend at least one day at Tartarugas beach. The entrance is through the Condominium Terravista (10 minutes by car from the town center). With spectacular cliffs, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Trancoso. The sea has calm waves and the sand is slightly orange. Of course, the beach got its name because of the illustrious visitors, the turtles that occasionally appear there. It is also a flat, nice beach for a short walk in the morning or a run at the end of the day.

HOW TO GET THERE The nearest airport to Trancoso is Porto Seguro, so the best way to get to the city is by traveling there by bus, car or by ferry boat to Arraial D’Ajuda which is just 26 km away from Trancoso. Arriving in Arraial, many shuttle vans or bus services go straight to Trancoso.
WEATHER With a tropical climate, expect sunshine almost every day year round. The average annual temperature is 25ºC (77ºF), reaching up to 40ºC (104ºF) in summer, or 21ºC (69ºF) in winter. So don’t expect the cold to ruin your plans any time of the year. Summer rains are expected at the end of the year, but they are quickly and soon pave way to sunshine again. It’s lovely to go to the beach early in the morning to soak up the sun, take a walk around lunchtime, return to the beach in the late afternoon and enjoy a nice open-air dinner in the evening.

I’MPOSSIBLE Yes, I have multiple disabilities. But I don’t care about what I can’t do. I focus on what I can do, and I can do anything. BY DEVIN NASSAR-REIS
W
HAT WERE YOUR GOALS WHEN YOU WERE A YOUNG ADULT? DID YOU WANT to get a good-paying job and finally get your own place? How about attending university? Maybe they were all of the above. Since I was nineteen, my goals were all of the above. But, like most nineteen-year-olds, I didn’t quite know how to get there. I also had dreams of starting my own business as a fashion designer. To add to that, it’s not a secret that I have multiple disabilities that aren’t visible to the untrained eye, making it difficult to find a fashion design program I could get involved with while pursuing my college education. I’ve been living with epilepsy and autism since I was a preteen. Surprisingly, I was bullied for having both from middle school to my senior year in high school; people can be unbelievably cruel. Like anyone with dreams, I’ve had my fair share of naysayers. So, how do I deal with haters and killjoys? I do whatever I can to prove them completely wrong. Two of my personal role models are American alternative musician Amy Lee and Russian businesswoman Olga Pekarevskaia. Amy Lee was told she was ugly and had no talent by several record labels; she can actually play multiple instruments. She sent one of her sample recordings to music producer David Foster. Guess what? He loved it. Now, she’s one of the most successful musicians with several American Top 40 hits since 2003. She has also made billions of dollars through album sales. Olga Pekarevskaia grew up extremely poor; the highest level of education anybody in her family made it through the educational system was the tenth grade. As a teen, she chose to break the chain that plagued her family. She graduated high school and got into one of the world’s top business schools at seventeen, while working in the event and public relations industries. In her mid-twenties, she founded Ginza Luxury

Group in 2010. Five years later, Maya Gemstones came into the picture, and she later patented the triangular 28-carat Maya Cut diamond. Many people thought the Maya Cut was strange and even a bit weird. At the age of thirty-five, she is now one of the youngest and most successful businesswomen in the world. Even though both women are totally different, they have faced many obstacles and did whatever they could to prove naysayers and haters totally wrong; they don’t think about what they can’t do. They focused on what they can accomplish. aZul for a Better Living helped me realize I can follow that same path. For me, my life changed when I was twenty-two, and I got involved with the Follow the Thread program by aZul for a Better Living. Sandra Rafaelli, its Founder and Director, worked with me to ensure that the program complemented my school schedule, which was perfect for a university student like myself. Getting involved with aZul for Better Living. was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made as a young adult. It’s a decision that showed me that nothing is impossible. So, what is aZul for Better Living? Founded in, aZul for Better Living is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. The company’s slogan is “Different Abilities, Endless Opportunities”, which holds absolutely true. The company’s dedication to improving the lives of individuals that have disabilities can present opportunities that might sound unheard of; nothing is impossible when you are involved with aZul for Better Living. Through my involvement, I have learned new fashion concepts. If you asked me what environmentally-friendly fashion was two years ago, I would’ve most likely raised one eyebrow. Through Sandra Rafaellis’ vision for a sustainable, inclusive future, I learned the importance of executing my fashion designs while always keeping the environment in mind. What is Follow the Thread? Follow the Thread is the environmentally-friendly fashion design program from aZul for Better Living. Anyone might think, “The clothes on my

back have nothing to do with the environment. OK, how does the fashion industry negatively affect the environment?” Actually, the negative impact is greater than we think. According to an October 2019 piece from Business Insider, “85% of all textiles go to the dump every year.” That’s enough to fill the Sydney Harbor in Australia once a year! The harvesting process of one of the most in-demand materials, cotton, uses water like there’s no tomorrow. Business Insider added, “In Uzbekistan, cotton farming used up so much water from the Aral Sea that it dried up after about 50 years.” Fifty years is the equivalent of two weeks in geologic time. Additionally, the dyeing process causes serious water pollution in rivers and lakes. Keep in mind, a lot of fast fashion companies use an unethical practice that would break anyone’s heart: child labor. According to a 2018 piece from Refinery29, over 218 million children are hard at work, 73 million of those are working in hazardous conditions that directly endangers their health, safety, and moral development. The horrifying practice often occurs in periphery (third-world) and/or semi-periphery (second-world) nations such as Honduras, Peru, Belarus and Uzbekistan. In an effort to combat the negative ethical and environmental impact of fast fashion, Follow the Thread utilizes the concept of reusing previously-loved pieces to create new ones. These articles of clothing are pieces that you can feel great about buying, while supporting the designer who completed the program. Follow the Thread doesn’t just focus on fashion design; the program also focuses on branding and business establishment. The program has given me opportunities that I never thought possible. I previously thought that I was destined to achieve little because I have multiple disabilities. Through my involvement with aZul for Better Living, I learned that the word “impossible” can be nonexistent in my vocabulary, let alone anybody’s. In the words of late American movie star and philanthropist Audrey Hepburn, “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, “I’m possible”.
