NIIT TECHNOLOGIES SHOWCASES ITS ALEXA AND BLOCKCHAIN APPLICATIONS DEVELOPED ON IATA’S AIRLINE INDUSTRY DATA MODEL

N

IIT Technologies Ltd., a leading global IT solutions organization, has successfully implemented its Alexa and Blockchain applications leveraging IATA’s Airline Industry Data Model (AIDM) enabling airlines to provide a seamless travel experience to its passengers. The solutions have been unveiled at IATA’s Global Airport Passenger Symposium (GAPS) 2018 being held from October 2-4 in Athens, Greece NIIT Technologies’ Alexa application provides passengers the ability to find more information about their bookings, flights and frequent flyer details. AIDM data structures formed the basis of the data sourcing from multiple fronts required to build this application. The backend settlement process on Hyperledger Fabric relies on AIDM data structures to push data in Chain-m, a Blockchain application which enables airlines and partners to quickly reconcile the transactions through smart contracts built on Chaincode. Anil Batra, Transformation leader, Travel and Transportation, NIIT Technologies, stated, “AIDM aims to increase the consistency of data definition, break silos and provide a standard messaging to improve interoperability, and reduces risk of project failure. Our deep domain expertise in the airline industry helped in understanding the AIDM process well and building applications catering to the entire spectrum of airline function.” Marie Masserey, Head, Industry Architecture, IATA, stated, “The AIDM was conceived as an essential industry tool to deliver interoperable data exchange standards faster. It is exciting to see the model content used to build innovative airline applications.” The seamless flow of data becomes challenging in the aviation industry due to

inconsistent use of definitions - the same term has different meanings in different systems while multiple terms are used to describe the same concept. AIDM helps in increased consistency of definitions and faster deployment of industry standards through quality and visibility.

piceJet celebrated the delivery of the carrier’s first 737 MAX 8. The airline plans to use the 737 MAX to expand and standardize its fleet, while leveraging the super-efficient jet to reduce fuel costs per airplane by $1.5 million a year. SpiceJet’s first 737 MAX 8 takes-off from Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington (Craig Larson photo). “We are excited to take delivery of our very first 737 MAX 8,” said SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh. “The induction of our first MAX is a huge milestone in SpiceJet’s journey. SpiceJet’s new 737 MAX airplanes arrive at a time when India’s commercial aviation market continues to grow at significant rates. According to industry data, domestic air traffic in India has grown about 20 percent in each of the past four years with an upward growth trajectory going forward. “India is a fast growing market for commercial airplanes and services,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing for The Boeing Company. “The 737 MAX for SpiceJet is the perfect airplane for this market and it will become a key ingredient for long-term success, especially as oil prices continues to put pressure on airlines. The marketleading efficiency and reliability of the MAX will pay immediate dividends for SpiceJet’s commercial operations.” In preparation for their new 737 MAX, SpiceJet signed up to leverage Boeing Global Services’ tailored flight simulator and maintenance training, which will help train SpiceJet’s world-class pilots and mechanics in all areas of 737 MAX flight operations, resulting in maximized cost-savings. The airline also employs Onboard Performance Tool, powered by Boeing AnalytX, which allows flight crews and ground personnel to perform real-time calculations based on current weather and runway conditions, improving efficiency and maximizing payloads.

SPICEJET PUTS PAKYONG (GANGTOK) ON INDIA’S AVIATION MAP

S

piceJet, the country’s favourite carrier, operated its first daily direct flight on the Kolkata-Pakyong (Gangtok)-Kolkata route. The first direct flight was flagged off from

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. SpiceJet was awarded Pakyong (Gangtok) under UDAN II and is the airline’s ninth destination under the scheme. SpiceJet is the first and only airline to offer daily direct air connectivity between Kolkata and Pakyong thus providing much needed air connectivity to the North-Eastern State of Sikkim. Pakyong airport is the only operational civil airport handling commercial operations in the State. SpiceJet will launch a second flight connecting Guwahati with Pakyong from October 16. A traditional lamp lighting ceremony was organized marking the inauguration of the operations and the first passenger was welcomed by SpiceJet officials. In line with the aviation tradition to mark key milestones, the flight which was flagged off from Kolkata, was greeted with a grand water cannon salute upon its arrival at Pakyong airport. With the launch of the new flight services, passengers from Pakyong can now conveniently travel to a host of other cities both on SpiceJet’s domestic as well as international network via multiple onward connections from Kolkata. Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet said, “Today is a proud moment for SpiceJet and a historic one for Indian aviation as we have put Sikkim on India’s aviation map. SpiceJet is the first and only airline to connect this majestic state with the rest of the country and beyond and will be connecting Pakyong with Guwahati from October 16th. Our new flights will provide a major boost to tourism and we are proud to contribute to the growth story of this vibrant state.” In the absence of direct air connectivity to the State, tourists headed for Sikkim had to fly to Bagdogra and then take a road journey of over 100 km to reach Gangtok. With the introduction of the direct flights from Pakyong the extra travel time will now be avoided. The Pakyong airport, the country’s 100th operational airport, is an engineering marvel situated at a height of more than 4,500 feet. On March 10, SpiceJet had successfully operated a test flight to Pakyong making it the first civil fixed aircraft to land at the airport. SpiceJet will be deploying its Bombardier Q-400 aircraft on the route.

In addition, the Company continues to work on finalizing its recent LoI signed at the Farnborough Airshow for 100 E175 aircraft for Republic Airways, with the expectation that a significant portion of these jets should enter the Company’s backlog by the end of 2018.

uring the third quarter of 2018 (3Q18), Embraer delivered 15 jets to the commercial aviation market and 24 business jets, being 17 light jets and 7 large jets. On September 30, Embraer’s firm order backlog totaled USD13.6 billion.

A total of 134 jets were removed from Embraer’s backlog in 3Q18. The majority of these planes belong to an order placed by Skywest for 100 E175-E2s, and were removed largely due to IFRS accounting changes. Given current timing uncertainty of the scope clause changes in the U.S. market to allow the heavier E175-E2 to be flown by regional airlines under capacity purchase agreements (CPAs) for mainline airlines, Embraer has proactively adopted best practices to align with the latest IFRS principles and remove the order from backlog given its conditionality terms. Skywest remains committed with the E175-E2 order and its terms are unchanged. The other 34 jets that were removed from the Company’s backlog in 3Q18 are related to cancellations, including an order for 24 E190 jets that were cancelled by JetBlue following its recent fleet renewal decision.

Regarding the commercial aviation market, Embraer forecasted in its Market Outlook a demand for 10,550 new aircraft

In the business jets segment, Embraer first exhibited the Phenom 100EV, Phenom 300E and Legacy 650E aircraft with full

Embraer Services & Support signed relevant agreements in Europe and Africa during the quarter. LOT Polish Airlines, the national carrier of Poland and leading airline in Central Europe, signed an extension of its pool agreement to support LOT’s fleet of 34 Embraer E-Jets. Kenya Airways also joined a service program whereby Embraer will take over the planning and replenishment of a sizeable portion of Kenya Airways’ spare parts stock covering the 15 Embraer E190 aircraft operated by the airline. Sahara Africa Aviation also signed a multiyear Pool Program Agreement for spare parts and support covering more than 500 components for their two recently acquired Embraer ERJ 145 jets.

The CS100 aircraft, which was donated by Bombardier in May 2018, will create new training opportunities across the fields of avionics, maintenance and aerospace engineering, giving Québec students access to the most advanced technology in commercial aviation. Over the next few months, the ÉNA’s professors will study the unique features of the C Series to determine the best way to intregrate this aircraft into their courses. “Building strong partnerships with local teaching institutions is key to develop the next generation of aerospace professionals,” said Alain Bellemare, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bombardier Inc. “The C Series integrates ground-breaking technologies and Canadian know-how into the world’s most innovative commercial aircraft. By donating a C Series to ÉNA, we hope to inspire a growing number of Québec students to consider exciting careers in the aerospace industry.” The CS100 becomes the 38th aircraft to join the ÉNA’s static fleet, which already includes two Learjet and two Challenger aircraft from Bombardier. As the third Flight Test Vehicle (FTV3) of the C Series program, it accumulated approximately 1,400 flight hours. It was mainly used for avionics and electrical tests as well as for community noise testing. “To be the first, and possibly only school in the world, to receive such an immense gift from our partner, Bombardier, positions our school as the best in the world,” said Sylvain Lambert, Director of the ÉNA. “The public will be able to visit and experience our C Series aircraft and our school at our Open House on November 11.” Bombardier is a leader in terms of aerospace research and training in Canada. Last year, the company donated a CRJ100 aircraft to the British Columbia Institute of Technology, and a Learjet 60 business jet to ÉNA. In June, it announced multi-million dollar contributions to the Downsview Aerospace Innovation and Research Consortium (DAIR) to establish an aerospace hub in Toronto. In addition, Bombardier provides hundreds of internships annually to students across engineering, finance, IT, marketing, production, supply chain management and other disciplines.

UNITED AIRLINES ANNOUNCE ORDER FOR NINE 787-9 DREAMLINERS

B

oeing and United Airlines announced the carrier is expanding its 787 Dreamliner fleet again with a new order for nine 787-9 airplanes, the longest-range member of the super-efficient Dreamliner family. The deal is valued at $2.53 billion according to list prices. United Airlines says the order reflects its fleet strategy of replacing older widebody jets with new, advanced airplanes such as the 787-9, which can fly farther and use 20 percent less fuel with 20 percent fewer emissions. The U.S. carrier, which announced a purchase of four 787-9s in July, has now ordered a total of 64 Dreamliners. The latest deal continues the strong momentum for the 787 Dreamliner family, with net orders now above 100 for the year and just one shy of 1,400 since the start of the program. Nearly half of all 787 customers have returned to place additional orders for the airplane, helping to make it the fastestselling widebody jet in history. “The 787 Dreamliner has been so successful in the marketplace because of great partners like United Airlines that have taken the airplane’s unrivaled performance to open new routes and offer passengers a wonderful travel experience,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing for The Boeing Company. “It makes all of us very proud to have United place a repeat order since its team has spent a lot of time with the Dreamliner and knows what it can do.” United began flying the Dreamliner in 2012, using the long range and fuel efficiency of the 787-8 and 787-9 to serve intercontinental routes such as Houston to Sydney and San Francisco to Singapore. The 787-9 can fly up to 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 kilometers) and serve 290 passengers in a standard configuration.

Later this year, the carrier is set to take delivery of the largest member of the Dreamliner family, the 787-10, which can seat up to 330 passengers in a standard configuration. While the airplane is capable of flying long distances with a range of 6,430 nautical miles, United today announced plans to debut its first 787-10 on premium transcontinental routes in the U.S., boosting its coast-to-coast schedules to offer passengers travelling between New York/ Newark and Los Angeles and San Francisco more flights and more premium seats.

Oman adopts electronic airway bill (e-AWB) standard

I

n-line with the Government plans to implement international best practices in business, Oman has adopted the International Air Transport Association’s electronic airway bill (e-AWB) standard in replacement of the paper airway bill - the contract of carriage for international airfreight shipments. The introduction of the e-AWB standard in the Sultanate will reinforce Oman’s position as an internationally competitive logistics hub with a digitally connected and integrated air cargo supply chain. The use of e-AWB allows freight forwarders and traders to communicate directly with over 120 airline operators around the world to report and manage their shipments. Omani traders will also benefit from the use of the e-AWB as it will remove barriers to trade by facilitating early (pre-arrival) reporting to customs and earlier release, reducing cargo storage time and costs. In support of the implementation process, IATA and CHAMP Cargo Systems will offer freight forwarders low-cost online facilitation for the creation and sharing of

e-AWB messages. This means that local businesses can benefit from the electronic reporting, without the need to invest in building digital systems in their businesses. Oman Air Cargo and Asyad conducted an e-AWB workshop on 26th September 2018 for the trade partners and airlines by inviting delegates from IATA and CHAMP systems to share the best practices and create awareness about e-AWB. On this occasion Oman Air Cargo became e-AWB compliant by signing the IATA Resolution 672, Attachment D agreement. Oman Air Cargo is the commercial cargo division of Oman Air, National Carrier of the Sultanate of Oman. Mohammed Ali Al Musafir, Senior Vice President, Oman Air Cargo said, “The digital advancement is changing the way industries operate. Oman Air Cargo is always at the forefront of adopting the latest e-initiatives to further develop the standards of the air

freight industry in Oman and make trade easier and faster for all industry players.” Mazen Al Homsi, Regional Cargo Manager MEA, IATA said, “The adoption of e-AWB will develop the air cargo community in Oman. IATA has been signing up more carriers, airports and freight forwarders into the e-AWB system. The e-AWB system that Oman Air Cargo is implementing will allow it to safely and proficiently empower its freight customers to perform the most essential tasks for cargo booking and data capture.” The e-AWB initiative is an international standard that removes the requirement for paper documents, resulting in significant improvement in the air freight supply chain efficiency, as it enhances productivity, reduces costs and increases data accuracy and security. Additionally, it enables traders and airline operators to access, store and track information conveniently.
