Greetings and Salutations

Dear Readers,

The focus of the airlines has now shifted to delivering a positive customer experience not only in the air but on the ground as well by investing in digital technologies. Biometrics is now being incorporated into the evolution of self-service at the airports around the world. The new technologies for passenger identity management such as blockchain eliminate the need for multiple ID checks. With over 84% of airlines planning to invest in Research & Development programs related to Artificial intelligence by 2021. We can hope to see a digital transformation of the aviation industry in the near future. The cover story in this issue has exhaustively covered the technological advancement which will take over the aviation industry. A special glimpse of “Aero India” 2019 is also covered in this issue. Along with that you will find a lot of interesting information on the latest updates in the aviation industry. ÇELEBI AIRPORT SERVICES WINS GROUND HANDLING LICENSE AT KANNUR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LIMITED

Ç

elebi Airport Services, a global service provider in ground handling services, will soon start its operations at the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) which is gearing up to go live for commercial flights this year. This will be Çelebi’s sixth airport in India after Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore, where the company won the Ground Handling licence in June 2018. Strengthening Çelebi’s decade long success story in India, the partnership with KIAL is the company’s second win in the state after Cochin International Airport. The total investment made by Çelebi under this partnership will be worth more than USD 4 million. The license for providing ground handling services at KIAL was won by Çelebi on the basis of a highly competitive international bidding process which saw multiple global ground handling players participate. Under the 5+2 year concession, slated to commence this year, Çelebi Airport Services will provide state of the art ground handling facilities and services for all aircraft types. KIAL, being built on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, will be the fourth international airport in Kerala, the state that has maximum number of international airports. To develop commodities, create infrastructure, enhance tourism and provide better air connectivity in the state, the Government is taking all possible steps to make the Kannur aerodrome operational this year. In line with the Government’s pursuit for operational excellence at the Kannur

International Airport and to develop the airport into a major hub, Çelebi will offer state of the art ground handling services using modern eco-friendly equipment as per IATA norms. Çelebi’s vision of being the front runner in terms of technology, service excellence, customer centricity and safety focus, will ensure safe, efficient, customer friendly and environment friendly provisions at the airport. Sharing his views on the development, Mr. Murali Ramachandran, CEO - India, Çelebi Aviation Holding Inc., said, “At the time when we are focused on expanding our footprint within the country, this partnership has proven to be a crucial step towards strengthening our presence and commitment in the India market. We already have our presence at the Cochin International Airport and now with our operations soon to start at the Kannur International Airport, we envision to comprehensively cover Kerala which is a good international market for many carriers. With this partnership, we believe we will be better positioned to contribute, support and play a meaningful role in catalysing the overall growth story of the Indian aviation sector.” Çelebi has always welcomed new initiatives especially when it comes to technology and environment, and holds a unique position of being present across India’s top three airports. The company also operates in Cochin and Ahmedabad. The company is currently partaking in tenders initiated by Hyderabad International Airport and The Airport Authority of India.

BIAL, UNISYS AGREE TO DEVELOP ANALYTICS CENTER

U

nisys Corporation entered into an agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) – operators of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru – to develop an Analytics Center of Excellence. The Analytics Center of Excellence will support a business intelligence and advanced data analytics platform for BIAL to consolidate and rationalize the Airport’s strategic, tactical and operational reporting – enabling Airport staff to make faster and better-informed business decisions, process air travelers more quickly and enhance the airport experience for the customer. The platform will allow the Airport to provide real-time content information pertaining to Airport services and flight information. The services will also provide travelers access to improved airport navigation, communication of airport services and proactive and personalized retail offerings based on passenger preferences and past spending history. This not only offers passengers greater visibility into airport amenities and services, but it also establishes an avenue for BIAL to generate non-aeronautical revenues. Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Strategy and Development Officer, BIAL said, “BIAL is committed to being a data-driven organization that will create a smart, futuristic and intuitive airport journey for passengers. Hosted on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, the solution employs Azure capabilities such as Azure HDInsight, SQL Data Warehouse, Azure Machine Learning and Azure Advanced Data Analytics services. “BIAL is a perfect partner, committed to meeting the growing needs of today’s connected traveler,” said Tony Windever, Vice President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Unisys. “This strategic collaboration leverages Unisys’ deep domain expertise and digital transformation capabilities, like the Analytics Center of Excellence, to create a more agile, predictive business model for travel and transportation customers. Supporting BIAL’s innovative vision, this has the potential to become one of the most advanced deployments of data and analytics for any airport in India, and potentially in the world.”

VISTARA RECREATES HISTORY WITH SPECIAL RETRO LIVERY ON 22ND AIRCRAFT

V

istara, India’s finest full-service carrier and a joint venture of Tata and Singapore Airlines, unveiled its 22nd aircraft, an Airbus A320neo with an extraordinary retro- livery (paint scheme) that is the first of its kind in India, along with a historic aircraft registration number and a retro-uniform that complements the livery.

The livery recreates the one used in the 1940s by Tata Air Lines, India’s very first airline that was founded by JRD Tata, and the aircraft also bears the registration VT-ATV that was originally used by a Tata Air Lines DC-3 aircraft. This striking retro-livery is also a celebration of 150 years of the Tata group, and it reclaims for Vistara the space once held by the pioneers of aviation in India, Tata Sons, and the Father of Indian Aviation, Shri JRD Tata. As part of this celebration, Vistara also unveiled a special retro-uniform for select cabin crew, inspired by the “golden days of aviation” of the 1950s and 60s, to be worn on special occasions starting with the aircraft’s inaugural flight on 5 September 2018 from Delhi to Mumbai. The inaugural flight will also feature a menu with JRD Tata’s favourite dishes, as remembered by senior chefs at Taj Hotels. Commenting on the occasion, Vistara’s Chief Executive Officer, Leslie Thng, said, “JRD Tata’s perfectionist approach ensured the finest flying experience for customers and made Tata Airlines India’s pride decades ago. Our mission and value system at Vistara are truly inspired by the heritage of Tata and Singapore Airlines. We are proud to claim and carry forward the baton of JRD Tata’s legacy and vision in building a world class, trendsetting airline that India can be proud of.” Elaborating on this unique initiative, Vistara’s Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer, Sanjiv Kapoor, said, “With this retro livery and uniform, we hope to recreate for air travellers what flying was like in its golden years, when an airplane trip was truly a special event that one eagerly looked forward to, something we want every trip on Vistara to be like. We want to make people look forward to flying again. We want to create an airline and an experience the would have made JRD Tata himself proud.” The special livery has been adapted from the original with the help of Airbus, which produced CGI renderings to fine-tune the aircraft’s look. In the absence of a colour photograph of Tata Airlines’ original VT-ATV

aircraft, Vistara took some artistic liberty to paint its new aircraft in a shimmery SilverGold using mica paint, giving it a shade of Sepia under certain light conditions for the retro look. The colour Red was chosen for the name and colour accents, and Grey for the cheatlines. The special cabin crew uniform has been designed with inspiration drawn from the uniforms worn in the glamour days of flying, while keeping practicality and industry regulations in mind. The vintagestyle uniform is a tailored blouson and semishaped skirt in moss crepe (fabric) that come in soft hues of Pale Lilac and Pastel Pink from the family of Vistara brand colours. It includes a beret, white pumps, and a pillboxshaped vanity bag. Just as with Vistara’s regular cabin crew uniform, this special uniform is designed to project all qualities that the airline’s cabin crew embody - a sense of style, elegance, warmth, care, friendliness and professionalism. On the inaugural flight of Vistara’s VTATV on 5 September 2018, customers will be served dishes that were JRD Tata’s favourites and were also popular among air travellers during those times. It includes Cheddar Cheese and Onion Omelette, Crêpe au Champignon, Meat Medley, Waldorf Salad, Minestrone Soup, Herb Roast Chicken, Goan Prawn Curry and Crème Caramel.

aircraft partially powered by sustainable jet fuel. The latest A321 for JetBlue is due to depart Mobile on 20 September with 15 percent sustainable jet fuel in its tanks. In total, five A321 aircraft are due to be delivered to JetBlue from Mobile using sustainable fuel by the end of 2018. All of the fuel will be supplied and certified by Air BP. It will be loaded into the aircraft by Signature Flight Support, Airbus’ fueling services provider in Mobile. Since May 2016, Airbus has offered customers the option of taking delivery of new aircraft from Toulouse, France, using a blend of sustainable jet fuel. Following the deliveries to JetBlue, Airbus will determine the next steps toward offering this option to more customers taking aircraft deliveries from Mobile. Longer term, Airbus envisions supporting industrial production of sustainable fuels for aviation in the southeastern U.S. “Our goal is to source sustainable fuels in the southeastern United States. It is an opportunity to work closely with local stakeholders to scale-up production and the commercialization of sustainable aviation fuels in the region,” said Frederic Eychenne, Head of New Energies at Airbus. “We are actively seeking ideas to leverage Airbus’ strategy into opportunities for new economic development in Alabama.” “This is another example of JetBlue acknowledging that a sustainable future for aviation will require cooperation between all parts of the industry,” said Robin Hayes, Chief Executive Officer, JetBlue. “Renewable jet fuel affirms JetBlue’s belief that we can help define our industry’s future path. Our goal is to serve as a market-maker for renewable jet fuel, creating demand and therefore supporting supply. We’re working closely with Airbus to set up infrastructure for more options in the southeast region.” Air BP Chief Commercial Officer, Matt Elliott, added: “The airline industry has ambitious carbon reduction targets, which in a growing industry will only be achieved with support from across the entire supply chain. We are working closely with airlines and aircraft manufacturers, such as Airbus, to drive change by promoting and securing the supply of sustainable alternative jet fuel.”

program. The airline contributed greatly to the airplane’s original design and has been one of its biggest ambassadors ever since. And now they are a launch customer for our new 777X airplane. We are thrilled to partner with Cathay on this donation to the museum as a way to share the remarkable story of the Boeing 777 for years come,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister. In the 1990s, Cathay Pacific was one of a handful of airlines to provide input for the 777 during the design phase. This gave Hong Kong’s home airline a unique opportunity to refine the airplane’s features to suit its needs. Among the requests were a cabin crosssection similar to the Boeing 747, a modern ‘glass’ cockpit, fly-by-wire system, and, lower operating costs. Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Officer Rupert Hogg said: “As the world’s very first 777, B-HNL holds a very special place in the history of both our airline and that of commercial aviation, and we are very pleased it will soon bring enjoyment to enthusiasts at its new home in Arizona.

athay Pacific announced that they are donating the first-ever Boeing 777 airplane to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona, one of the world’s largest facilities devoted to celebrating aerospace. The iconic airplane (line number WA001 and registered B-HNL) flew from Cathay Pacific’s home airport in Hong Kong to Tucson, Arizona on September 18. The jet will be displayed permanently at the museum alongside more than 350 other notable aircraft.

“Our 777-200 aircraft have served us exceptionally well over the last two decades, and as we progressively retire these over the months ahead, we eagerly look forward to welcoming the state-of-the art 777-9 aircraft into our fleet from 2021,” he added.

SHANGHAI AIRLINES RECEIVES FIRST 787 DREAMLINER

Boeing first flew the 777-200 aircraft on June 12, 1994 and continued to use it as a test airplane for several years. The aircraft joined the Cathay Pacific fleet in 2000, ferrying passengers across the airline’s global network until it was retired earlier this year. Since its first flight, the 777 program has become the world’s most successful twin-engine, twin aisle airplane. Its unique combination of long range, outstanding fuel efficiency and popular cabin has attracted carriers to place more than 1,660 orders. Cathay Pacific was one of the original customers and today operates one of the largest 777 fleets. “Cathay Pacific has been instrumental in the tremendous success of the 777

oeing and Shanghai Airlines celebrated the delivery of the carrier’s first 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline says it plans to use the super-efficient and passenger-preferred Dreamliner to upgrade its regional and longrange service from its base in China’s largest city. The new airplane, with a special symbol of “100” on its fuselage, is the 100th airplane for Shanghai Airlines, a subsidiary of China

Eastern Airlines. “We are so excited to take delivery of the very first Dreamliner for Shanghai Airlines, as well as China Eastern Group,” said Li Yangmin, vice president of China Eastern Group. “With the introduction of these new airplanes, China Eastern Group will also officially launch the global leading new generation Passenger Service System. We are confident that all these efforts will help us significantly upgrade our services and we know our passengers will love it.” The 787-9 is the second member of the Dreamliner family, which offers 20 to 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat and lower emissions than the airplanes they replace. As the longest-range member of the family, the 787-9 can fly 290 passengers, in a typical two-class configuration, up to 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 km). Shanghai Airlines is set to receive additional 787-9s in the coming years. The airline plans to fly their initial 787s on popular domestic routes such as Shanghai to Chengdu and Beijing, as well as regional routes from Shanghai to Japan and Korea. As the carrier’s 787 fleet grows, it plans to take advantage of the aircraft’s long range and superior fuel efficiency to open new, international routes. “We are thrilled to expand our longstanding partnership with Shanghai Airlines and the China Eastern Group. The 787 Dreamliner’s unmatched performance, operating economics and comfort make it the perfect airplane for Shanghai Airlines to expand and enhance their international network,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing for The Boeing Company.

F

ollowing a successful tour in Africa and in the US, Embraer is now beginning the European and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) part of the E190-E2 worldwide demonstration tour. The aircraft will visit more than 15 countries during September. At each stop, Embraer will show the capabilities of the world’s quietest, cleanest and most efficient new generation single-aisle aircraft in the segment. The first stop on the European tour is in Warsaw, Poland. “The E190-E2 started revenue flights in Europe earlier in the year, and following a successful appearance at the Farnborough Airshow, we are proud to show off our new aircraft to operators across the region. With over 45 customers and over 350 aircraft in region, we are already seeing many of these customers interested in the world-beating aircraft,” said Martyn Holmes, Vice President Europe, Russia, Central Asia & Leasing, for Embraer Commercial Aviation. “We are eager to present the E190-E2 to the airlines, many of which are already E-Jets operators.” The E190-E2 is currently in commercial operation with Norway’s Widerøe, since April of this year. Three jets have already accumulated close to 2,000 flight hours achieving outstanding schedule reliability of more than 99%. The E-Jets E2 are the most efficient family of aircraft in the single-aisle market burning up to 10% less fuel than its direct competitor. The E190-E2 brings also more flexibility with maximum range of up to 5,300 km or about 1,000 km longer than current generation E190. The E190-E2 also brings significant savings to airlines in terms of maintenance costs, with up to 25% reduction thanks to a smart design based on direct feedback from the operators. It has the longest maintenance intervals with 10,000 flight hours for basic checks and no calendar limit in typical E-Jets utilization. This means additional 15 days of aircraft utilization in a period of ten years. The E190-E2 also obtained better results than initial expectations in pilot transition training time. Pilots of current generation E-Jets need only 2.5 days of training and no full flight simulator to fly the E2. “Decreasing the training burden for pilots transitioning from E1 is another huge reduction in both time and cost for our operators. This coupled with the unmatched fuel efficiency and lowest

noise footprint, making the E2 the most cost-effective and most environmentally friendly single-aisle jet in the planet, we see the aircraft as the natural evolution for many Embraer operators in the region”, explained Holmes.

BOEING KC-46 TANKER PROGRAM COMPLETES FAA CERTIFICATION

T

he U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Boeing’s KC-46 tanker program a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), verifying that it’s refueling and mission avionics systems meet FAA requirements. The milestone marks completion of KC-46 FAA certification. To receive its STC, Boeing’s team completed a series of lab, ground and flight tests, which commenced in 2015. As part of the required flight testing, the team validated the KC-46’s boom and drogue aerial refueling systems met FAA certification criteria. “Our Boeing/Air Force test team did an outstanding job successfully leading us through all the requirements, and we appreciate the FAA’s collaboration as well,” said Mike Gibbons, Boeing KC-46A tanker vice president and program manager. “This milestone is important in that it is one of the last major hurdles in advance of first delivery to the U.S. Air Force.” The STC is one of two required FAA airworthiness certifications. Boeing received an Amended Type Certificate for its core

767-2C aircraft configuration in December 2017. While those certifications cover most of the jet, not all military functions and equipment can be certified by the FAA. The U.S. Air Force also must grant a Military Type Certificate (MTC), which is expected in the coming months. Boeing’s team concluded MTC flight testing, which included the jet’s aerial refueling, defensive and other militaryspecific systems, in early July. Six aircraft have supported various segments of STC and MTC testing. Overall they have completed 3,500 flight hours and offloaded more than three million pounds of fuel during refueling flights with F-16, F/A-18, AV-8B, C-17, A-10, KC-10, KC-135 and KC-46 aircraft. The KC-46, derived from Boeing’s commercial 767 airframe, is built in the company’s Everett, Wash., facility. Boeing is currently on contract for the first 34 of an expected 179 tankers for the U.S. Air Force. When in service, the multi-role KC-46 will refuel U.S., allied and coalition military aircraft using its boom and hose and drogue systems, but also must be able to take on fuel to extend its operational range. The boom allows the tanker to transfer up to 1,200 gallons of fuel per minute, while the hose and drogue systems, located on both the plane’s wing and centerline, enables the KC-46 to refuel smaller aircraft with up to 400 gallons of fuel per minute.

irbus’ handover of the first A350-900 Ultra Long Range (ULR) opens a new frontier in non-stop air travel

FIRST ANA A380 TAKES TO THE SKIES

With the delivery of the first A350900ULR to launch customer Singapore Airlines (SIA), the A350 XWB Family is positioned to lead the way for new ultralong-range operations, including on the world’s longest commercial route, between Singapore and New York. Airlines already use the A350-900 and A350-1000 primarily for long-distance flights, but there is also demand for nonstop services on extreme long-haul missions, which is why Airbus developed its new game-changing variant. The A350-900ULR – derived from the A350-900 – has an extended range of up to 9,700 nautical miles. This was achieved by integrating a modified fuel system, which increases the aircraft’s fuel carrying capacity by 24,000 litres without the need for additional fuel tanks. With a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 280 tonnes, the A350-900ULR is capable of flying over 20 hours non-stop, combining the highest levels of passenger and crew comfort with unbeatable economics for such distances. Setting new standards for long-haul travel Since entering service in 2016, the A350 XWB Family has set new standards for longhaul travel in the mid-size category. Based on a clean sheet design, it has brought a step change in efficiency, reduced fuel consumption and lower cash operating costs compared to the older-generation aircraft it replaces. And in service both the A350900 and A350-1000 are demonstrating high levels of operational reliability and maturity. The A350 XWB’s flexibility also means the A350-900ULR can easily be reconfigured as a standard -900, if required. Evolving the ULR from the A350-900 was made possible thanks to extensive design and upstream industrial studies at Airbus, avoiding complex modifications. Some of the engineering development, for example, involved the relocation of sensors in the fuel system – enabling existing tanks to carry the maximum fuel load for the ULR. This eliminated the need for additional fuel tanks.

n celebration of 85 successful years, Turkish Airlines has unveiled a fresh look with a new uniform specially designed for its cabin crew. The new uniforms will begin to be used following the opening of the Istanbul New Airport, the “new home” of the flag carrier airline. Inspired by many classic elements of Turkish design and culture, the new uniforms incorporate traditional patterns found in artisanal glassware, ceramics, and calligraphy with contemporary textures and details. The collection combines shapes and colors found in Istanbul Bosphorus with a new ‘flow detail’, created to symbolize the effortless and dynamic energy flowing through Turkey’s most dynamic city as an intersection between East and West. Unique and recognizable with a deep red and anthracite grey palette, the collection includes hats, gloves, dresses, bags, and accessories. Another key aspect of the project is that the uniforms of cabin, cockpit, flying chefs, and ground services will be streamlined under a single design approach to offer the passengers to live a holistic brand experience. While maintaining traditional elements of Turkish design and culture, our new uniforms are professional and stay true to a culture of hospitality, just like our airline.”

Boeing first announced the agreement with Millennium Space Systems on August 16, 2018, pending U.S. government approval. Terms of the approved deal were not disclosed and do not affect Boeing’s financial guidance or the company’s commitment to returning approximately 100 percent of free cash flow to shareholders.

Ettore Billotta, the fashion designer behind the uniforms said, “When I started to design for Turkish Airlines, the first thing that inspired me was Istanbul. This city has been a melting pot for art and civilization for centuries and has a rare richness as a common heritage of many cultures. I wanted to bring elements from traditional calligraphy and mosaics together with the new interpretations of Turkish motifs, which emphasize modern lines, into foulards and ties to reflect a contrast and duality.” To launch the new look, the national carrier teamed up with globally renowned British photographer and artist, Miles Aldridge to shoot the new Turkish Airlines cabin uniform collection in Istanbul’s unique spots.

Chapman says the job’s most satisfying aspect is being a member of a dynamic engineering team, beginning with the design phase and continuing until entry in service. Based on his career, Chapman offered some advice for those considering a future in aviation. “It is a great field in which to be involved, covering such diverse activity as design, development, engineering and air traffic control…along with flying, of course. But keep your mind open to all the possibilities that are out there. Don't discount anything,” he said. Chapman has worked at Airbus since 2004. Before joining the company, he had served in the Royal Air Force. Having graduated with a Master’s in Engineering Science from St Catherine's College, Oxford, he went on to complete his test pilot training in France.

Lockheed Martin, Tata to Build F-16 Wings in India

L

ockheed Martin Corp. announced an agreement to commence production of F-16 wings in India. This strategic initiative positions Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s (TASL) to become the provider of wings for all future customers and strengthens their role in the F-16 global supply chain. TASL is Lockheed Martin’s strategic industry partner in India. Producing F-16 wings in India will strengthen Lockheed Martin’s strategic partnership with Tata and support ‘Make in India.’ The planned F-16 wing production move to India is not contingent on the Government of India selecting the F-16 for the Indian Air Force. “Building F-16 wings in India are a natural next step that builds on our successful partnerships with Tata on the C-130J [airlifter] and S-92 [helicopter],” said Vivek Lall, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. “This is a strategic

business decision that reflects the value of our partnerships with India and the confidence we have in Tata to perform advanced defence manufacturing work and deliver world-class products.” Lockheed Martin’s broader proposed F-16 partnership with India—to produce F-16s exclusively in India for the Indian Air Force and export customers—stands firm. Lockheed Martin recently submitted a comprehensive, fully compliant 600-plus page Request for Information (RFI) response to the Indian Air Force. Lockheed Martin and TASL announced last year that the two companies intend to join hands to produce the F-16 Block 70 in India if the aircraft is selected by the Indian Air Force. The F-16 Block 70 features advanced avionics, a proven Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a modernized cockpit, advanced weapons, conformal fuel tanks, an automatic ground collision avoidance system, an advanced engine and an industryleading extended structural service life of 12,000 hours. To date, 4,604 F-16s have been procured by 28 customers around the world. Approximately 3,000 operational F-16s are flying today with 25 leading air forces, including the U.S. Air Force.

AISATS becomes first to introduce RFID cargo tracking at Kempegowda airport

A

ir India SATS has launched a new shipment tracking platform that uses Radio Frequency Identification technology for its cargo handling operations at Kempegowda International airport in Bengaluru. As the largest handling services provider at Kempegowda airport, AISATS manages two dedicated cargo handling centres: the AISATS Air Freight Terminal and the AISATS COOLPORT. It will be the first and only air cargo terminal operator in India to bring RFID technology to the country for realtime cargo tracking, enhanced end-to-end visibility and faster turnaround.

The RFID tracking system will also enhance accuracy, thereby making the cargo handling process more secure. The RFID technology uses radio waves to transfer data from an electronic reader to an RFID tag and vice-versa. The handling staff can use a hand-held RFID scanner to scan the shipment pieces at various stages of the cargo handling process. Once the RFIDtagged shipment is scanned, the RFIDenabled device will send AWB-related information to a tracking platform, enabling all stakeholders to undertake real-time, endto-end cargo tracking.

The platform is capable of tracking shipments at two levels: at piece level and at container level. The technology can be leveraged against various cargo services such as express cargo, valuables and perishables. With 97,486 tons of cargo handled in the first quarter of this financial year, AISATS’ air cargo operations at Kempegowda airport have increased by 16.6% over the same period in the previous financial year. As more airlines commence operations and increase their frequencies at Bengaluru, air cargo volumes are expected to continue to increase. “With cargo volumes burgeoning in Bengaluru, it is imperative that we embrace innovation and technological advancements to create an efficient cargo handling environment,” commented AISATS CEO Mike Chew. “The RFID technology has a unique advantage of tracking shipments at piece level, which brings transparency to the supply chain and helps AISATS manage large volumes of cargo seamlessly. We are excited to be the first air cargo terminal operator company to implement this technology in India at Kempegowda International Airport.”

World’s First Electronic Dangerous Goods Declaration Handled at Frankfurt Airport

L

ufthansa Cargo, using the INFr8 platform, has handled the world’s first dangerous goods shipment with an electronic Dangerous Goods Declaration (eDGD) at Frankfurt Airport. A shipment from healthcare giant Abbott Diagnostics in Wiesbaden was flown on board cargo flight LH8222 to Mexico City.Lufthansa Cargo has made a significant contribution to the establishment of the global eDGD standard as part of IATA’s e-freight initiative. A completely new approach has been developed and evaluated through close collaboration all along the transport chain with the Infr8 eDGD platform. Lufthansa Cargo’s IT systems and processes can now deal with paperless dangerous goods shipments. This makes the Frankfurt-based cargo carrier the first airline to support the eDGD standard.

28

OCTOBER

2018

“We are pleased that the eDGD has celebrated its global launch with Lufthansa Cargo. This underscores our claim to be the industry pioneer in digitisation. There is still so much more for us to achieve here together with shippers, forwarders and airports,” said Sören Stark, Board Member Operations and COO of Lufthansa Cargo. Hand in hand with this, the pilot phase of the INFr8 shipping portal has been successfully launched. All pilot partners are digitally connected to the platform and can use it to process transport documents – including the Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD) required by law. “Our shipping portal solves a major challenge in the air cargo supply chain, ensuring greater reliability and transparency for all. We are greatly simplifying processes across company

boundaries,” said a pleased Ulrich Wrage, CEO of DAKOSY AG, in reference to the launch of the INFr8 pilot. Besides Lufthansa Cargo, logistics service provider Panalpina has also been a key process partner to Dakosy, the platform developer. Frankfurt Airport plays a major role in dangerous goods handling for both companies. Fraport AG, responsible for providing and operating the airport’s infrastructure, has contributed significantly to the development of the portal. “Thanks to this worldwide innovation, the INFr8 platform integrates the shipper into the electronic information chain of the air cargo process for the first time. We expect this to result in shorter check-in times and much faster handling of dangerous goods,” said Anke Giesen, Executive Director Operations

at Fraport AG, welcoming the launch of the shipping portal. The dangerous goods process has traditionally been paper-based due to the lack of digital standards. Dangerous Goods Declarations on paper from shippers arrive at the airport with the respective goods. Accordingly, airlines can only begin checking the documentation after handover. Thanks to the new electronic system, however, errors in accompanying documentation can be detected and ironed out before the airline ever receives the shipment. This will translate into fewer rejected shipments in the future. It will also mean faster processes and better use of resources. The pilot phase of the INFr8 platform, available at www.infr8.de, is expected to last six months. After this, the platform will become a standard tool available to all market participants interested in using it. There are already plans to expand the portal through the addition of further product groups.

DHL offers cash-ondelivery payment for e-commerce in SE Asia

C

ash is still king in Southeast Asia, with over 73% of the population still unbanked and inaccessible to e-commerce retailers since they do not have access to credit cards or internet banking services. DHL eCommerce, a division of Deutsche Post DHL Group, launched its Cross Border Cash-onDelivery (COD) service to allow consumers to pay for their international purchases in cash and only upon delivery. COD is available as a value-added service of the DHL Parcel International Direct product, specifically for sellers based in China and Australia delivering to consumers in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Collected cash will be remitted to a local bank account at destination (Malaysia, Thailand or Vietnam) or in the billing country (China or Australia) based on the local destination currency. Remittance will be made to sellers

every fortnight and tracking visibility of the status of COD is available on the DHL portal. "Despite growing credit card adoption in Southeast Asia, the low level of credit card penetration has forced e-commerce retailers to offer alternative modes of payment methods such as cash on delivery, digital payments and in some cases paying in-store. This opens up a huge potential by reaching out to a new group of unbanked consumers and also meeting the needs of consumers who prefer to pay in cash." said Charles Brewer, CEO, DHL eCommerce. "China and Australia are huge e-commerce export markets and our DHL Parcel International Direct product provides a direct entry into high demand markets with excellent transit times of 3-5 business days with economical shipping prices. With our fully-owned domestic delivery network in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, we are able to deliver on-time with secure features like cash-on-delivery." added Brewer. To enable sellers in China and Australia to tap on the cross-border e-commerce opportunity, DHL eCommerce enables economical international shipping with a range of e-commerce features. This includes

parcel pick-up service; easy IT integration of the seller's inventory into the DHL shipping process, end-to-end tracking, dynamic routing and distribution, returns management, etc. DHL eCommerce is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group, established in 2014 as part of the Group's growing focus in e-commerce logistics solutions. Along with its sister divisions DHL Express, DHL Supply Chain and DHL Global Forwarding, the Group offers end-to-end solutions for e-commerce retailers.
