TAKE YOUR TUNES on the road for some old-fashioned holiday fun By Heather Shoning

CHRISTMAS CAROLING has a long history

in England, and many early American settlers brought the tradition here with them. Early American colonists from England, the Netherlands and other European countries celebrated Christmas with music and caroling. Churches played a significant role in promoting Christmas caroling, as congregations would gather to sing hymns and carols to celebrate the birth of Christ. This religious aspect of caroling remains an essential part of the tradition for many people. The 19th century saw the popularization of caroling with the publication of song collections and the idea that caroling was a way of spreading holiday cheer and goodwill among neighbors. Today, it’s a cherished tradition as carolers go door-to-door, sing in public places, or participate in community events, spreading joy and holiday spirit throughout the season. If you’ve never gone caroling, let this be the year! And if you’re a skilled celebrational crooner, gather the gang and warm up those voices for a lovely season of song. Sophie Lichens, general manager of Neighborhood Music School in Aurora, shares some tips for making your caroling experience one to remember.

suggest for a group size for neighborhood caroling? Should there be a particular mix of men and women and children?

SOPHIE LICHENS: Smaller groups (up to 10

or so people) tend to be a little more manageable (and there may be some practical limitations depending on your venue of choice), but don’t let that discourage people from joining in—the more the merrier! If you have a lot of interest, you can always break into a few smaller groups or host multiple dates. Most people don’t get to sing much outside the shower, and caroling is a great opportunity to plug into the community.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the mix of voices. While a well-balanced, well-rehearsed choir sounds fantastic in a concert hall, the fun of caroling is simply to get together as a group and sing. If it sounds good, that’s a nice bonus!

Where can I find song sheets for my group? Most carols are in the public domain, so it’s easy to find lyrics and basic melodies online. In a pinch, you can just print some pages from the internet (a quick Google search will bring up endless options) but creating a “songbook” of your own can be useful, especially if you plan on making caroling an annual tradition.

How should we warm up our voices?

Warming up your vocals gets your voice and ears ready and helps keep your voice warmer for longer when outside. If you have never done vocal warmups before, try humming first in your mid-ranges, then try to bring the voice higher. After you feel like the voice is warm, try singing through your carols together. Once you’re outside and getting colder, make “zzzzz” sounds into a scarf to keep your voice warm. Before venturing out, make sure everyone has enough warm clothes, including gloves, hats and earmuffs. Nothing is worse than feeling cold when you’re meant to be singing to put everyone in a festive mood!

Are there any etiquette tips for caroling? Places like shopping malls may require advanced notification that you’re planning to carol in case they have other events—if in doubt, reach out. Generally, we’d recommend three to four songs at each stop—best not to overstay your welcome. However, if your audience is enthusiastic, sing on! You may or may not draw much of a crowd, and that’s OK. Remember: The fun of caroling is, first and foremost, getting together to sing. It’s OK if there isn’t a big audience! If you do draw a crowd, you’ll probably get some requests. If the requested song is in your songbook, go for it! It’s not a bad idea to designate a spokesperson for your group ahead of time who can announce songs and be the one to politely decline a request if the group doesn’t know it or otherwise feels uncomfortable singing it. Neighborhood Music School began in 2012 in the personal home of its founder, Skye Barker-Maa. It now operates out of Stanley Marketplace and offers a variety of in-person and virtual classes, including drums, string instruments, piano and more—in addition to voice lessons.

During what hours should we go caroling? The unpredictable Colorado weather and children’s bedtimes can make caroling timing tricky. If you’re going door-to-door in residential neighborhoods, we recommend caroling right after a traditional dinner time—around 7 p.m.—to avoid interrupting meal time. For business districts, we recommend going right when it starts getting dark—around 4 p.m.— while people are still out and it’s a little less frigid. 18

Breakfast strata is an easy and delicious take on your classic eggs and bacon. Swap the bacon for your favorite protein or omit the meat and try it with broccoli and cheddar. This recipe is easily customizable, and you can make the strata ahead of time and bake it fresh the next morning for the best flavor.

4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon cumin ¼ teaspoon chili powder

INGREDIENTS 8 cups of cubed bread (big chunks of a crispy baguette or sourdough loaf are perfect!)

1 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes 6 large eggs salt and pepper, to taste

8 slices of uncooked bacon

1 small bunch fresh cilantro, chopped

½ cup chopped onion

1 small bunch fresh parsley, chopped

3 garlic cloves, finely minced

HOW TO MAKE IT Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan on medium heat. Add the chopped bell pepper and onion and cook for 5 minutes or until the onion becomes translucent. Add garlic and spices and cook for an additional minute. Pour the can of tomatoes and juice into the pan and break down the tomatoes using a large spoon. Season with salt and pepper and bring the sauce to a simmer. Use your large spoon to make small wells in the sauce and crack the eggs into each well. Cover and cook for 5 to 8 minutes, or until the eggs are done to your liking. Garnish with chopped cilantro and parsley.

3 packed cups fresh chopped spinach* 9 large eggs 2 cups whole milk 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground mustard ¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1 ½ cups shredded Parmesan cheese Optional garnishes: fresh ground black pepper, flaky sea salt and extra Parmesan cheese HOW TO MAKE IT Grease or spray a 9 x 13-inch (or similar size) casserole dish with nonstick spray. Arrange the bread in a single layer in the dish and set it aside. In a large skillet, cook the bacon according to the package directions. Remove all but 1 tablespoon of the fat. (Alternatively, drain all of the fat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet.) Allow the bacon to cool until it is safe to handle. Then, slice it into bite-sized pieces. Sprinkle the bacon over the bread. Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 4 minutes over medium heat until tender. Add the spinach and cook, stirring periodically, until the spinach has wilted, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat. Spoon the spinach mixture over the bread and bacon and top with the cheese. In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs, milk, salt, ground mustard and pepper. Pour evenly into casserole dish. Cover securely and place in the refrigerator for 1 hour or overnight. Before baking, allow the casserole to come to room temperature for 15 minutes after removing it from the refrigerator. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Bake the casserole for 20 minutes, uncovered. Bake again for 30 to 35 minutes, loosely covered with aluminum foil. The casserole is done when the sides are browned and the center is puffy. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with desired garnish(es), and set aside for 5 minutes before serving. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 5 days, securely wrapped in plastic wrap. Microwave to reheat.

LET’S RAISE A TOAST TO DECEMBER, the tastiest 31 days of every year. No other month of the year is home to so many meals and festivities with family and friends. During this season, diners are more than ready to dress up and go to restaurants for those annual get-togethers. From Hanukkah through New Year’s Eve, south metro restaurants are breaking out the tinsel, lights, and menus of holiday martinis, take-home dinners, gift-making classes and parties, all designed to light up the darkest, shortest days of winter. Local diners are already unwrapping an early holiday gift with the recent opening of Oliver’s Italian in Greenwood Village. The new eatery is the long-simmering brainchild of Sean Huggard, owner of Blue Island Oyster Bar & Seafood in Cherry Creek and Lone Tree. Comfortably situated between a neighborhood red sauce joint and a high-end trattoria, Oliver’s Italian has an airy, comfortable dining area where you can have a big meal with a big wine or just a twicebaked, Roman-style pizza with a glass of pinot grigio, according to Huggard. “We wanted to create an escape to this romantic idea of Italy we have in our minds. You know, the one where everybody is good-looking, six feet tall, skinny and walking around with a martini,” he says. 24

LOCAL FLAVORS Huggard is not Italian by birth but grew up in Boston, immersed in the local Italian-American food culture. “I’ve always liked really great American-Italian restaurants. That is where my passion for cooking started,” he says. When he initially lived in north Denver, he discovered the city’s iconic Italian classics—from Gaetano’s to the now-shuttered Pagliacci’s and Patsy’s—and got a taste for the elaborate holiday traditions at American-Italian eateries. Oliver’s inaugural menu features all the classic Italian dishes ranging from chicken Parmesan to salmon with butternut squash risotto. “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, but we try to do everything the right way,” Huggard says. Since his family owns an oyster farm, seafood figures prominently. “We serve a great pasta bowl with white sauce and octopus, mussels, clams, shrimp and calamari,” Huggard says. Oliver’s hopes to make the yuletide merry for diners with traditional Italian seafood dishes as well as classic desserts, including an authentic tiramisu. The restaurant will be open Christmas Eve and then host toasts during its first New Year’s Eve bash. “We finally have a lot of space at Oliver’s to gang tables together so we can seat large family groups,” Huggard says. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE when it comes to holiday decor—the ones who are chomping at the bit to start decorating the moment there’s a chill in the evening air and those who are not. The former group heads to Carla’s A Classic Design in early November to get started. “Starting in mid-October, it takes about two weeks for us to turn the store into a winter wonderland—setting up all the trees, different vignettes, hanging garlands, and unpacking and setting up all the unique Christmas decor and gifts,” says Michelle Moriarty, lead designer and daughter of Carla McElroy, who started the company out of her home in 1992. Then,ʼtis the season! While the retail store brims with holiday decor and shoppers, the design and installation teams are hard at work filling Denver-area—and beyond—homes with holiday cheer. They take the hassle out of decorating by doing it all for you! Whether you want to supplement the holiday decorations you already have or start from scratch with all new—from one tree and some garland to multiple trees and rooms full of holiday decor—Carla’s has you covered. When you schedule an appointment, a lead designer will visit your home to learn what you want to do, decide where your tree—or trees—should go and determine how much material will be needed. You can visit the showroom to choose what styles and colors you want, and then the team makes the magic happen. “Sometimes we have clients come to the store during our holiday open house, and they’ll say, ‘I love that tree and everything on it, and that’s the look I want,’” Moriarty says. “They can buy it right off the floor as is, and it’s theirs, and we deliver it and do the setup, or we come up with a whole design and special order for them from pictures.”

// holiday home With literally hundreds of design styles and elements to choose from, you can create a truly personal look for your holiday home. Moriarty says she’s designed a home with feather boas, disco balls and platinum ornaments and another with a flocked tree and all black and white ornaments. “We’ve done a whole room and tree with nothing but elves that the client had collected, and we brought in new elf ornaments to mix in,” she says. “It was a whole vignette with Christmas elves. We ended up hanging some coming down ladders.” If you enjoy decorating yourself but want to achieve a more polished look, Moriarty has tips for that. She recommends putting collections together. For instance, you might do traditional golds and champagnes in the living room, keeping it more formal with the tree, garland and the decor being cohesive. In less formal spaces, such as family rooms, she suggests casual red, green and whimsical decor. To solve the problem of elegantly displaying the disparate homemade items the children brought home from school year after year, Moriarty suggests starting with a tree with different-sized, solid-color ornaments—even tucking them way into the tree—to build a consistent base design. Then, add the children’s ornaments. “It brings the homemade collection to life, and it makes it look more cohesive than just a bunch of random ornaments on a tree,” she says. Another tip for DIY-ing your holiday decor: “Put a Christmas tree or some garland around a fireplace in the primary bedroom. It becomes a fun, magical thing to have in your bedroom over the holiday season.” Moriarty says one of the most important things is having well-lit trees and garlands. Not only does Carla’s install your new—and perennial—holiday decorations, but when the holidays are over, they come back and pack everything up for you to store until next year, or if you don’t have the space or want it in your home, they offer off-site storage for a monthly fee. Then, the following year, they’ll come back and do it all again. “I would say that ninety-nine percent of our clients— once they have our team come in and do the setup and the takedown—are addicted for life,” Moriarty says. “We have clients who have been on our calendar for fifteen years.” Clients love it so much, in fact, that they are generally booked a year out, but Moriarty says sometimes they have last-minute openings, so it’s always worth getting in touch. She adds, “It just takes away from all the stress and the chaos, and then you have more time to do all the other crazy things that have to be done during the holiday season.”

AS THE OLD SAYING GOES: “Necessity is the mother of invention.” But as proven in recent years, sometimes it’s just boredom. Staying at home bred idle hands looking for something to do. For Steve Cashman, it started with a couple of old sewing machines found in the garbage. “I decided to take them home and make wine tables out of them.” When helping a friend move, he adopted an old guitar. “It was pretty banged up, and he didn’t want it anymore. I took it home and had some tools I wanted to try out. I looked inside the guitar, and it looked pretty solid, so I cut the face off.” Cashman tinkered with the piece—staining the wood and putting shelves inside with old wood he had lying around. “I thought it’d be nice to do something with the strings,” he recalls. “So I stitched them around the edge of the guitar.”

He says the piece was almost complete but needed one last touch. “It looked cool, but it was kind of dark. I thought some LED lights might work. It ended up fitting perfectly.” He says he wanted to put something inside that would reflect the light, so he cut out sections to fit a bottle of alcohol and put some drinking glasses on the shelves. A guitar bar that glows like a museum piece was born. 34

Cashman says the whole thing came as a surprise. “I’ve never made anything artistic.” He adds that it’s ironic that he created a guitar bar since he also doesn’t drink or play guitar. Cashman started making more and giving them to friends, getting most of his guitars from online markets or people bringing them to him. The guitar bars set him on an all-new artistic journey when he started posting them on Facebook under the name All Stitched Up Guitars and got requests not only from people wanting to buy them but also to show his work at art shows and makers markets. “A guy contacted me on Facebook and asked if I wanted to do some art shows,” he says. “That’s something I never considered in my entire life!” Cashman says he has a lot going on with a full-time job working with at-risk kids and two 18-year-olds starting college. But after doing shows throughout the summer of 2023, he discovered a new community of artists and makers. “During the shows, we walk around and talk to each other. People know each other. They help each other out. You might see them at dinner, and they all say ‘hi.’ It’s just neat.” Having now sold more than 100 guitar bars, he’s experimenting with ideas other than minibars. He offers some versions with just shelves so people can use them to display anything they want. Cashman says he’s always up for a custom order. He’s been asked to make trophy case versions, one to hold pool balls, and his sister suggested a jewelry case. He says they make great gifts and are often perfect for man caves or entertainment rooms. “I have a realtor who’s given them to clients when they buy homes.” He says the whole venture still surprises him, but he’s enjoying the journey. “This went somewhere I never expected. It’s been really fun.” 35

MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO Kristen Brown and Paige Moeller, respectively, know a thing or two about bringing a dream to fruition. Over the past decade, as co-owners of Melrose & Madison boutique, the two have created a name for themselves and fostered a community that thrives and truly supports all involved. Ever since a young age, Moeller had a vision. “When I was seven years old, I’d come up with different names and pretend that I owned a store,” she says. Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, it might’ve been in her blood all along—as well as her mom’s. Her grandfather owned two women’s clothing stores, and Brown worked at both. After Moeller returned to Denver from working in the fashion industry in L.A., came one fateful evening never to be forgotten—she met with her parents for dinner and spotted a ‘for lease’ sign going up across the way. “It was serendipitous that that happened, and we called right away to express our interest in the space,” Moeller recalls.

Moeller’s degree in fashion merchandising and Brown’s in marketing (along with a background in business and accounting) made the perfect recipe for success. An added bonus: The two work really well together. “We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so in a sense, we try to stay in our own lanes, you might say. We know what we’re good at and what we’re not good at, and that’s where we balance each other out,” Brown says. The two have bonded over their shared love of shopping for as long as they can recall, which also motivated them to open their boutique so other mothers and daughters could share that experience. The most rewarding part of it all? “Having such great customers,” Moeller says. “It’s great to wake up and know I get to see such friendly faces. And there’s nothing better than helping women to feel their best. Seeing their eyes light up after finding a piece of clothing they love is everything.” In addition to fostering self-confidence in women, supporting their employees in all aspects is crucial for the two. “We want to help them shine in the areas that they’re passionate about. We’re very hands-on, and we’re always involved, but we like to have them show where they can shine in the business as well,” Moeller says. “We let them take the lead if they have a specific interest, such as social media or buying. We’ll assist them in those areas so they can grow further.” For Brown, offering a safe space for girls and women of all ages is just as important. Many of their customers have grown with them—some were just 16 years old when they began shopping at Melrose & Madison, and now they’re bringing their children in to shop. Building lasting relationships with their customers—many of which have resulted in friendships—makes Melrose & Madison feel like a second home. “They call it retail therapy for a reason,” Moeller says. “We’re always open to talking to our customers about their life issues. Whatever they’re going through, we’re there for them.”
