TRAVEL NOTES

I DON’T GET TO DO NEARLY ENOUGH OF IT, BUT I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE TO TRAVEL. One of my favorite things to do is sit at an airport bar and people watch. I love walkin through an international terminal listening to the symphony of languages tha a beautiful background playlist for a life full of travel that I like to imagine fo Sure, I experience jet lag and can get annoyed at delays, but none of it makes me con giving it up—never. As a matter of fact, I keep my passport on me at all times because well, you just never know!

In this issue, I take you to Cabo—and no, not the nonstop-party spring-break destination. Today’s Cabo is designed for luxury living—and the full-time, expat lifestyle is not just for the retired anymore. Writer Rebecca Toy embarked on a fantasy yacht tour off the coast of Croatia that is an attainable, luxury vacation for any family. And there’s a Denver company ready to send you yachting in this colorful, historic Mediterranean paradise.

If you prefer to stick closer to home, you can still transport yourself to the Italian countryside through wine, thanks to wine importer and tech guru Dino Chronopoulos. Faerl Marie Torres talked to him about his QR code technology that brings the Italian vineyard right to your phone. Or, as writer Jessica Hughes shows us, you can create your own girlfriends, wine tour right in south Denver with a variety of wineries and tasting rooms you’re sure to love.

Another topic near and dear to my heart: women’s empowerment. Writer Amanda Lacy introduces us to Karmen Berentsen who lives it every day through her A Line Boutique clothing stores with personal shoppers to take the stress out of looking great. But she’s also an author, podcast host and speaker on the topic of, as she says, helping women “live fully alive.”

I loved talking with Dr. CJ Bathgate about her Cherry Hills Village home designed by Angela Ireland of A.I. Interiors. The pair envisioned a refreshed traditional look with natural elements and—the most important part—reflections of the young family’s history at every turn.

This time of year, we turn our thoughts to warmer weather, and in Colorado that means wild temperature shifts. Expert stylist Hailee Lucchesi selected some beautiful jackets to make the transition to spring, and writer Elizabeth Watson introduces us to a couple of noninvasive body treatments to get you pool or beach ready.

AvidLifestyle is a luxury lifestyle magazine serving Denverʼs south suburbs. And weʼre excited to add new, experienced writers to our growing list of contributors. Do you have magazine writing experience? Do you know Denver’s south suburbs? Can you dig deep for the unique story about the people, places and events that make our community special? If so, we want you! Please email heather@avidlifestyle.com with basic info about yourself and at least three published clips (links are fine).

Ladrón Cellars

Located in Englewood, Ladrón Cellars is an artisanal winery specializing in producing premium wines with grapes sourced from some of the best wine-producing regions in the world. Sourcing their grapes from vineyards in California’s Central Coast and Washington state, winemaker Richard Crockett focuses on selecting varietals that highlight each unique climate, creating incredibly complex wines.

“Ladrón Cellars was created for this purpose of sharing our same passion for wine with others,” says Tracy Crockett, partner and owner at Ladrón Cellars. Sip your favorite varietal, sample some of the best vintages and explore what you love about the wine in the relaxing tasting room.

InVINtions

Located in The Shops at Greenwood Village, InVINtions leads the way in wine innovations and experiences. “InVINtions is unique because the customers can be involved in the wine-making experience,” says Tristan Bailey, general manager at InVINtions. “Customers can buy batches (28 bottles) of wine and put the wine into initial fermentation.” Once the wine has made it through the rest of production, you can come back in a few months to bottle and label your wine.

InVINtions also offers a tasting room with all its wines (roughly 70 to 80), available for tasting in a variety of different ways including flights, one-hour tastings, by the glass or by the bottle.

Carboy Winery

If you live in Colorado, Carboy Winery hardly needs an introduction. The award-winning winery has made a name for itself up and down the Front Range as one of the biggest wineries in the state. “Carboy Winery is uniquely Colorado,” says Carolyn Schwartz, director of marketing for Carboy.

With four locations in Colorado including Palisade, Denver and Breckenridge, Carboy's Littleton location is the flagship winery and tasting room. The large-acre property offers expansive space to sample wines both indoors and outdoors. “The experience at Carboy can best be summed up as ‘fun,’” says Schwartz. “We make wine for adventurous people and serve it in a way that is unpretentious and welcoming.”

Purgatory Cellars

With two locations—Parker and Castle Rock— Purgatory Cellars makes a name for itself in South Denver’s suburbs using Colorado grapes and old-world winemaking techniques such as using European oak barrels and Georgian clay pots. Purgatory Cellars is the only winery in the U.S. that makes a sparkling wine in clay pots.

Enjoy a cozy setting with wood and brick details and a fireplace to add to the ambiance. Find your favorite with their wine flights or sample some of their most popular pours.

Crush Wine Bar

Started by Castle Rock locals, Crush Wine Bar is a family-owned operation that offers a wide range of wines from all over the world. Hand selected by co-owner and sommelier James Lewis, the wines reflect his personal taste and expertise. “We carry wines provided to us by winemakers/importers with whom we’ve had relationships for years,” says Lewis.

Whether you are looking for a wine to pair with your favorite dish or want to experiment with several wines, you can choose from more than 50 wines either by the glass, half glass, ¼ glass or the bottle.

The Rouge Wine Bar & Patio

Feel like you’ve stepped back into the roaring 20s with a visit to The Rouge Wine Bar & Patio in Greenwood Village. A quiet and relaxing space, The Rouge offers a place where you can leisurely enjoy a glass of pinot and charcuterie board. And for those who don’t enjoy wine, they also serve classic cocktails and a beer menu to satisfy everyone’s drink of choice.

MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT

Make a true “Wine Country” weekend of it by booking a stay at the Hilton Denver Inverness, where you can continue the wine-tasting fun. Throughout March, guests will receive a complimentary glass of wine with any 80-minute spa service. The onsite Fireside Bar & Grill is an ideal location to enjoy a post-spa beverage and savory bites. Enjoy panoramic views and a cozy fireplace.

Uncorked Kitchen and Wine Bar

What goes hand in hand with cooking? Wine, of course! Guests at Uncorked Kitchen and Wine Bar can sharpen their cooking and winetasting skills through group cooking classes, baking classes, wine tastings and more.

Take in the sweeping city views from the Centennial location in the upstairs wine bar as you savor a selection of hand-picked wines and seasonal small plates in one of Uncorked’s wine-tasting classes. Sample between six and nine different wines, each hand-selected by an expert sommelier. For a more casual selfguided wine experience, visit the wine bar and order from the carefully curated menu by the glass, flight or bottle.

Livin’ La Vida Cabo

haven

DRIVING SOUTHWEST FROM Los Cabos International Airport, you’ll encounter vast expanses of desolate desert where vultures fly over the land dotted with the bony fingers of giant cardon cacti standing erect from the sandy earth. The barren rolling sand hills give way to a patchwork of locals’ shanties, where dogs and chickens roam free—their only care the luxury SUVs speeding down the highway.

After weaving through the bustling outskirts of the city, where streets are only wide enough for the permanently parked cars and one more to pass, you finally crest the ridge to discover palatial porticos where the dry creek beds of the desert meet the pristine blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. Now, this is Cabo. And just beyond the city proper to the southwest are some of the most prestigious, first-class residential communities in all of Mexico.

HISTORY

Cabo was, of course, initially settled by Native Americans but caught the attention of European explorers in the mid-16th century. The name came in 1603 when, under the direction of the Viceroy Count of Monterrey, General Sebastian Vizcaino launched three ships to travel up the California coastline naming and establishing the places they encountered. However, the fishing village of Cabo San Lucas was established in 1917 when an American company built a tuna-catching business. Starting in the 1970s, Cabo San Lucas became a huge tourist draw, probably topping out in the late ’80s, thanks to Sammy Hagar’s “Cabo Wabo” song written during the height of the city’s party-town period.

An area once dominated by timeshares and vacation rental is today populated with luxury, single-family homes and condominium developments. Not that Cabo doesn’t reflect remnants of the party era. Of course, some remnants of the party era remain, but the location has firmly rooted itself as a haven for affluent communities designed for people interested in an active lifestyle, whether during retirement, early retirement or before. American expats account for about 70 percent of the current population.

ACTIVITIES AND CULTURE

Cabo San Lucas offers a variety of historical, cultural and outdoor activities, so there’s something for everyone. The beaches, surfing, sailing, snorkeling, diving and sport fishing are just some water-based activities to enjoy in Cabo. Spotting sea lions at the local landmark, Arco de Cabo San Lucas, is a favorite, and whale-watching during the winter. The more than 27 miles of coastline from Cabo San Lucas north to San José del Cabo (the two cities forming Los Cabos) is dotted with picturesque golf courses.

The cultural vibe and the rich history of Los Cabos have welcomed literary greats such as Steinbeck and Hemingway as well as modern film and television stars. The Natural History Museum offers a glimpse into the influence of indigenous cultures, including the years the location was rampant with pirates and British and Dutch conquistadors. Other ways to experience the art and culture of this vibrant city include the local art walks and galleries. The gallery district bustles on Thursday evenings from November through June. Just wandering the streets can be an unofficial lesson in historical and contemporary architecture sideby-side. Of course, food and a bustling nightlife play a considerable part in the attraction to this south-of-the-border residential destination.

Of course, all of this is charming and intriguing and probably makes you want to hop on a flight for a nice, long vacation. But what if this were your everyday life—either year-round or part of the year? There are a variety of residential communities to choose from in this area. However, situated as far south as you can travel on the very tip of the peninsula—where you get sunrises and sunsets—is Quivira Los Cabos, a luxury resort community designed to offer its homeowners an unparalleled lifestyle experience. Here, you’re not just a resident; you’re part of a community, a family. There are six residential areas within Quivira offering different amenities and opportunities. And because the property here experiences an elevation change of more than 600 feet, the homes are strategically positioned, so each captures views of the sea.

Alvar, the most recent master-planned resort community in Quivira, offers contemporary architectural design of seven buildings with ocean views divided into two low-rise towers with one, two or three levels, offering apartments with 3 or 4 bedrooms and 1 or 2 penthouses per building. These large homes start at 3,165 sq. ft., with large terraces and common spaces. Owners here will enjoy a private clubhouse with pools, a roofed terrace and a gym.

Old Lighthouse Club is a private, gated neighborhood flanked by miles of pristine beaches, accented by a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, and wrapped in the great expanse of the sea. It is a golf-lovers oasis with the Old Lighthouse Club resting along high bluffs, gentle dunes and lush native desert. Here, you can build the custom or semi-custom home of your dreams right alongside the course.

Cruising Croatia

See the sun-drenched islands of the Dalmatian coast with a once-in-alifetime private yacht tour

IMAGINE BEING IMMERSED in the luxury of a private yacht while lazily sailing among more than 1,000 islands offering secluded hideaways with pristine privacy or taking in views of ancient cities that were once the playgrounds of Roman emperors. When you and your family embark on a once-in-a-lifetime yachting vacation off the coast of Croatia, you can enjoy this and more.

Croatia is a dream destination for so many reasons. “It’s one of the friendliest countries with amazing service,” says Sara Haffenden-Hill, a co-founding partner of yacht charter Aquazeal in Denver. Croatia is her personal favorite Mediterranean destination to recommend to clients. “They are family-oriented people with a warm, welcome vibe. You don’t see that everywhere in the Mediterranean.”

DAZZLING DALMATIA

Whether you want history, culture, beaches, biking, wine tasting or adventure sports, an individualized charter will make it all happen on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast.

When it comes to Croatia, most people think of Dubrovnik. While the famous city at the country’s southern tip is worth a stop, the centrally located city of Split to the north is a popular departure spot. It’s only thirty minutes from the modern international airport to the almost two millennia-old walled city center and port. Stroll the palm-lined Riva promenade, sip Aperol and climb to the top of Roman emperor Diocletian’s bell tower at sunset. The views of this Dalmatian jewel tucked between the city and sea are striking.

An hour’s sail from Split is the island Brač, whose evergreen trees contrast vividly with the gleaming white port of Bol. A short walk away from its relaxed cafe scene you’ll find Zlatni Rat, the Golden Cape. This famous pebble beach juts into the water, shifting with the tides. Next to the dock is the prestigious Stina winery, and trying a glass of their crisp, balanced pošip varietal is a must.

Across the strait, Hvar’s hilltop fortress adds drama to the skyline of the port town known for a good party. Villages surrounded by lavender fields await those who go inland while crystal clear waters best reached by ship beckon beach lovers.

To the southeast, red roofs rise above Korčula’s white walls, its Venetian-built streets fanning through the city like fishbones. Spend the day wandering through Marco Polo’s birthplace and have a cocktail on top of a tower. Or head beyond the walls to Korčula’s beaches, century-old olive orchards and vineyards.

Further west, Vis enjoys a reputation among Croatians as their “most authentic” island. A sailors’ haven that was off-limits as a military base for forty years, Vis today uniquely blends its history with activity. Adventure tours offer diving among the remains of allied planes from World War II or swimming in the secret tunnels that hid submarines. Abandoned airfields have turned into vineyards for a more relaxed afternoon.

The magic of these private charters lies within the possibilities, and these popular spots are just the start. An expert charter company will gather your interests, needs and limits to create the perfect itinerary for you and your guests.

Captains in Croatia own their yachts, competitively upgrading ships over generations and, most recently, adapting luxury small-ship cruising to chartered yachts. In a region already more affordable than the Riviera, these large ships’ innovative refits and fresh builds translate to the same standards of luxury with enough room to share the once-in-a-lifetime experience with family and friends.

Mitja Mirtič, CEO and co-owner of Goolets, a charter service specializing in Croatia, attributes the region’s success to generational family pride. “They put their heart and soul into this,” he says. “They build these ships in front of their own homes. From the very beginning, they are invested in every detail of a guest’s experience.” And the word is out. Some yachts book out as far as two years in advance.

With the stellar service comes all-out opulence. Abundant cabin space often includes stand-alone tubs and walk-in closets. Fitness rooms, entertainment theaters, hot tubs, pools, and even playrooms for the kids keep everyone entertained at sea. Meals can be a casual alfresco feast or five courses with white-gloved service. Yet the real luxury comes from having your every desire accommodated.

“We don’t wait for you to tell us what you want before we give it to you,” Mitrič says. “We ask ourselves how we can give you the things you haven’t even thought to ask for yet.”

Delicate Detailing

BY NATURE, A MIDCENTURY MODERN HOME with its clean lines and form over function detailing—can feel a bit austere. So, when Momoko Morton Wong of Naka Interiors designed this primary bathroom, she wanted to bring in some subtle, yet powerful, softness to the space. “It’s playful without being too whimsical,” she says. “There is beauty and fun in the symmetry of the design.” It retains its midcentury bones through the vanity in a rich tone with sleek lines and sans fussy details like cabinet pulls, the light fixtures, the geometric chevron pattern of the backsplash tile, and the functional aspects including inset cabinets behind the mirrors. The elegance is in the soft brushed-gold fixtures, the delicate curved corners of the mirrors and quartzite countertop in a pearlescent white with a delicate sheen of glitter throughout.

Curated Classic

A young family gets a time-honored style punctuated with natural elements and family memories in their CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE FOREVER HOME

A.I. INTERIORS has completed hundreds of design projects throughout Colorado since its inception in 2005, and throughout that time designer Angela Ireland has seen design trends come and go. Some more quickly than others. But what never goes out of style is incorporating the essence of a family into the design. However, it can be tricky when blending a very casual, organic style into home with traditional bones. With a recent renovation in Cherry Hills Village, she—along with team members Emma Spencer and Megan Burelli—was tasked with keeping but modernizing the traditional architectural details and creating a casual, organic vibe. Jon and Dr. CJ Bathgate wanted their forever home to reflect their family’s past while making room for them to build their future.

44 march 2023 // AvidLifestyle DWELLING WELL // feature home

Ireland was able to salvage the bones of this home that were in great shape and that the homeowner loved, including the grand staircase with ornate iron railing. She opted to carpet the stairs because of small children growing up here, and again, gave all the millwork a crisp white style. Introducing a Boho-style beaded chandelier from Palacek keeps the formality in check.

The home has many hallmarks of a traditional Georgian-style home—a grand entrance, a curved staircase with an ornate iron railing, traditional millwork, arched doorways and mullioned windows and doors—which the Bathgates loved, and Ireland aimed to lighten and brighten with a fresh coat of white paint on the woodwork. Then she used lighting, artwork and decor as a way to bring in the organic elements the client wanted. In addition, the homeowners wanted a place that was casual and comfortable for visitors, and because the family includes two young boys, the furnishings and finishes needed to be durable. But most important was to incorporate “stories” and precious reminders of the young family’s life together.

45 march 2023 // AvidLifestyle DWELLING WELL // feature home

The previous owners had completed a remodel of the kitchen, so Ireland selected a new paint color for the walls and modern black farmhouse-style barstools that align with the black metal pendant light fixtures. It’s the other rooms in which she made a huge design impact—especially the flex space which serves as a game room, den and office, and it was Ireland’s favorite space to design. “There were challenges, for sure,” Ireland says. “I get so excited about the creative exploration through that. It was a very formal living space, and it didn’t fit the vibe with what we were trying to achieve.”

Because the previous owners had remodeled the kitchen, Ireland added fresh color and decor items to spruce up the space. Black light fixtures and barstools coordinate with other black elements throughout the design.

I GET SO EXCITED ABOUT THE CREATIVE EXPLORATION ...”
By painting the classic millwork white, this space retains an upscale, elegant feel that provides perfect contrast to the organic elements including the textural rug from Four Hands, wooden bead light fixture from Palecek and rich wood dining table from Arhaus. “We like to mix different woods, different materials,” Ireland says. “The table itself being a natural wood and very simple allows us to play with some other details creating contrast. It just the kind of natural element that pulled the look together.”

a variety of purposes. One area is a tidy area for Dr.

to

DWELLING WELL // feature home 50 march 2023 // AvidLifestyle
This space serves Bathgate work from home. In the middle of the room, swivel chairs from Arhaus paired with stools from Four Hands provide the perfect get-together area for a girls’ wine night. And in another section of the room, a game table and chairs from Four Hands provide a place for family time. Both curved elements and touches of black—prominent in this space—are seen throughout the home.

To create a space for the homeowner to work and have a pleasant Zoom background, Ireland selected a small, sleek desk with a comfortable upholstered chair, but the focal point is the stunning backdrop wall. Ireland selected a hand-painted wallcovering on rice paper with dark charcoal and metallic hues from Porter Teleo, a woman-owned business. For Dr. Bathgate, a therapist, this was an especially important reminder for the work she does. The design is based on the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where artisans repair cracked or broken pottery often with gold as opposed to a material that would hide the cracks. The tradition says: Breakages and repairs are part of the history of an object, and that they must be shown instead of hidden. “When we’re able to add a story into the design, it just makes it that much better,” Ireland says. In other areas of the space, she incorporated curved elements such as the curved-back chairs, round ottomans and coffee tables, curved-top cabinet and the round game table to align with the arches in the home’s architecture.

Although the homeowner originally wanted to tear it out, the fireplace held a happy surprise: The tile surround and hearth were made of stone slabs with blush pink veining. “Anytime I have the opportunity to work with a blush or a pink, I am going for it,” Ireland says. “I fell in love with this.” She had the mantel painted black to match other black elements throughout the home, and then brought an organic feel into the space through a custom wall decor made handmade in Mexico. “They sent us samples of the strings that they wrap around it, that are charcoal and blush,” Ireland says. “I had to make sure that it worked perfectly with that blush tone that we had in the fireplace, so it all tied together.”

DWELLING WELL // feature home 51 march 2023 // AvidLifestyle

Other decidedly organic elements include wooden beaded light fixtures, textural rugs and various artwork and decor items throughout the home. Ireland introduced the curved elements in other spaces as well including a mirror in the sunroom, the breakfast area light fixture and curved-back barstools in the lower-level kids craft area.

When the couple knew they needed a home more suited to their growing family, they were excited to move, but leaving their first home was hard for Dr. Bathgate. It was the first home they bought together, and it’s where they brought both of their children home to from the hospital. So, when she grabbed one last item out of the basement before they closed the door to that home forever, it turned out to be a beautiful addition to the new home. “I saw this scroll tucked away, and while I wasn’t sure what it was, I didn’t want to leave anything behind,” Bathgate says. She opened it with Ireland to discover the original blueprints of the couple’s first home. Ireland transformed the drawings into art—another family story to add to the new home. “It’s so meaningful hanging up in my husband’s office and it definitely fits his aesthetic,” Bathgate says. “We want people to have an emotional experience in our house. And even if they don’t, we want to have that emotional experience.”

DWELLING WELL // feature home 52 march 2023 // AvidLifestyle
The family room is designed to look beautiful but withstand lots of use. The sectional from Coda is upholstered in easy-to-clean fabric, while the rug from Pottery Barn is a stain-resistant polyester that still looks beautiful and inviting. The coffee table from Ai Studio offers a modern feel with organic textures. The home’s lower level includes a home gym and craft area. Dr. Bathgate wanted the gym to be an inviting space that would inspire a healthy lifestyle. Adding a ballet bar, custom mirrors from Accessory Warehouse and a Boho-print wallpaper from Spoonflower accomplished that goal. The special artwork featuring the blueprints of the family’s first home hangs on the wall in Jon’s office. Ireland specified a deep blue paint color for the existing cabinetry and leather pulls for a rugged, yet debonair style.
303.795.2507 lehrerfireplacepatio.com REDEFINING OUTDOOR LIVING PATIO | FIRE PITS | FIREPLACES | ACCESSORIES

Artwork played a big role in the primary bedroom inspiration. Ireland contracted Shoen Fine Art to create two pieces to sit behind the homeowners’ chairs and flanking the window. She drew on the browns, creams, blues and blush from the paintings for the decor including a Lulu & Georgia woven jute light fixture. Dr. Bathgate—a self-proclaimed DIYer— had painted the mountain artwork above the dresser. However, it was in bright colors, so she allowed Shoen to add warmer hues to her creation to align with the other artwork in the room, resulting in a consistent palette but artwork with a personal story behind it.

Turning this new forever home into their own timeless interpretation of their life is what’s most important to Dr. Bathgate. “And it’s just general reminders of the things that you value that are just so much more than material. That’s an old architectural blueprint. But the fact that we raised our kids in that home, and we were the ones to discover the drawings and decide to do something with them—that’s incredible.”

Early in the couple’s relationship, Dr. Bathgate had to move to Arizona for a residency. In a fun way to add a nod to that era in their life, Ireland selected a quirky, colorful, desert-themed wallpaper for the primary bathroom water closet. “We spent a large chunk of our engagement in different states when I moved to complete my residency,” Dr. Bathgate says. “Whenever we see it, we smile because it’s a nod to my time in Arizona.”

Enchanting Experience

DINO CHRONOPOULOS transports wine buyers from south Denver to Italian vineyards

IMAGINE YOU’RE WALKING through the La Sclusa vineyard in Northern Italy. You brush your hands across sun-warmed leaves and join a tasting of the Friuli Colli Orientali in the middle of a historic field with four generations of vintners. Now, imagine a technology that takes you on this sensory journey from your favorite wine shop or restaurant directly to the vineyard, just by scanning a QR code. Thanks to Dino Chronopoulos, founding partner of VinWine Brands, this innovation exists and will be available to consumers soon.

Chronopoulos grew up in Veneto, a region famous for its delicious wines, breathtaking landscape and canal-filled capital city, Venice. His passions for technology, consumer experience and wine married to create vinwineXperience, an innovative and proprietary technology that brings consumers direct to the vineyard of the bottle in hand.

After 25 years in global agribusiness, consumer products and telecommunications, Chronopoulos brought his love of viniculture to the forefront, partnering with a team of experts in Italy to make wine selection an interactive, sensory experience. VinWine Brands wants consumers to feel like they’re visiting the vineyard and its winemakers when they access the vinwineXperience QR code. Interactivity allows consumers to be their own guides, including expanding pairings to be multi-dimensional, and matching wine with cuisine styles from around the world.

Chronopoulos wants choice to be about more than affordability and trusting the waiter, particularly in restaurants without a sommelier. “Wines are complex products,” Chronopoulos says. “Unless you know your labels and wines,

it’s like playing roulette.” His voice filled with excitement as he talked about bringing Italian viniculture to wine lovers around the globe, introducing consumers to the smaller, family-owned wineries he loves.

His passion is making wine and viticulture knowledge accessible, translating from Italian grapes to global consumers. Part of this translation is done through co-labeling, which provides characteristics beyond grape variety and region. VinWine Brands co-labels group wines into collections such as artisan made, sustainably farmed, cellar reserve and more, which is particularly good for collectors. These collections enable VinWine Brands to educate consumers and market the viticulture. Many of the vineyards are in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, unprecedented in their beauty and distinction. This interactive experience direct from the label, allows consumer to get a feel for the terroir that makes each wine so special.

The native Italian lives in Denver but when Chronopoulos opens a bottle and sniffs, he’s transported to his home country. Upon opening a bottle from a new winery, he was hit by the smell of wildflowers so intense, it felt like he was there. He’s excited to pair that smell with the vinwineXperience interaction. “It opens the world to the consumer … bringing the winemakers’ passion to the table,” he says. “It hits all the senses—what you see, what you hear, what you smell, what you taste and what you touch on the screen.”

For Chronopoulos, wine is about more than sensory pleasure, it’s about representing his native land, introducing the winemaking families he’s come to know and respect, and sharing his knowledge to create an experience for people to appreciate all aspects of the wine and what goes into each bottle.

Making Way for Women

KARMEN BERENTSEN, OWNER OF A LINE BOUTIQUE, on women’s empowerment and helping women to “live fully alive”

Photos Courtesy of Karmen Berentsen

Karmen Berentsen is a self-described serial entrepreneur and a woman who wears many hats: owner of A Line Boutique, author of the memoir “Learning to Fly,” host of “A Line Stories” podcast and motivator to name a few. The common theme amongst all of them? Berentsen’s undeniable dedication to women’s empowerment.

After building and selling two tech companies, Berentsen purchased A Line Boutique in 2012. With a passion for fashion and a strong vision for building businesses, she immediately knew A Line was right for her.

“I think the power of clothes is significant,” Berentsen says. “As little kids, we put on a cape and suddenly feel like a superhero. Clothes are such a powerful tool in our toolkit to show up in the world, and they help either to have that confidence before we actually have that confidence or to communicate and project a certain image.”

Berentsen relates that childhood experience to our current day reality and the daunting task of putting together an outfit for anything from a date to an important meeting. Enter her mission to offer A Line’s personal styling at no cost. Highly qualified stylists lift the burden and ensure that they curate the right look just for you.

“Not only do we get to be a part of our client’s lives, but we get to actually walk the lives with them ...”

“I have heard directly from women over and over, from everything as simple as I got another date because of my outfit. Was it the outfit? No. But it was the confidence they walked in with! We help make women feel good and feel whole,” Berentsen says. “Not only do we get to be a part of our client’s lives, but we get to actually walk the lives with them, and we get to be a significant part in empowering them for success.”

A Line is a community, and for many it’s a safe place where they can evolve and walk life and be vulnerable in the dressing room. It’s also a movement to help women “live fully alive,” Berentsen says. “This is why I was born. This is what I do every single day. Every way that I can do it.”

There’s more to A Line than high-end fashion and personal styling services. “It’s a whiteglove experience! Everything you can think of from walking in and getting a glass of champagne put in your hand, to that that heavy coat being taken off your back and hung up,” Berentsen says. A Line also offers complimentary tailoring, home and office deliveries, virtual styling appointments, curated shop box subscriptions, travel and event styling, and wardrobe and closet edits.

When someone asks Berentsen what she does, she tells them she has a women’s empowerment company with three arms to the business. “We have our four—soon to be five—boutiques and with the skill from our stylists we empower women,” she says. “Then we have “A Line Stories,” a podcast that offers the message that we’re all empowered when we don’t feel alone; and the third arm is A Line Adventures which offers luxury travel adventure where we take our clients out of their comfort zone to help them realize what they’re capable of—such as hiking a 14er, a trip to Paris and more—and becoming empowered through that.”

Spring Coverups

LAYERING PIECES TO KEEP YOUR LOOK FRESH

ONE OF THE BEST parts of living in Colorado is the luxury to experience every season to its fullest. For seasons like winter and summer, the dress code is more straightforward. However, spring can be more precarious. On one hand, you may very well be skiing the Rocky Mountains, or you might be sitting outside on a charming patio enjoying the nearly 300 days of sunshine we get each year. No matter what this spring brings, here’s your guide to layering pieces that will keep you warm when needed—and look great with any wardrobe.

First up, look no further than to the king of American fashion, Mr. Ralph Lauren. His vibrant knitted shawl-collared cardigan made of up of a rich blend of linen, cotton and wool is a closet essential. The geometric motif pattern and carefree shape are perfect for a casual day of shopping or Sunday brunch on a patio. Hot tip: Swap out the self-belt for a woven leather belt for a laid-back look or pair with an avant-garde vintage belt for dinner at your favorite neighborhood joint.

Established in 1945 in Paris by Pierre Balmain, this iconic house has long exemplified bold femininity and extravagance, which shows in this artful, shapely piece.

If the perfect trench did ever exist, then the Ecru Leather Trench Coat at ST. JOHN in Cherry Creek is it (see page 60). Lush cream jackets are extremely hard to come by, let alone in leather. Luckily, ST. JOHN created this masterpiece. The ultra-luxe leather paired with the sharp collar and tie belt allow this piece to be worn nonstop.

Body Contouring

Noninvasive sculpting services can help you achieve your BEST SILHOUETTE

LET’S FACE IT, LADIES, no matter how fit and trim we might be, we can often identify little areas that we carry a smidge of fat that we’re not happy with. And while body positivity is important, there’s no reason we shouldn’t get a little help from science if we want to. So, as you turn your thoughts toward warmer weather—and more exposed skin—you’ve got a variety of treatment options to help you feel a bit more comfortable in your body. Specifically, we look at two FDA-approved thermal technologies that provide non-invasive body contouring treatments. One uses heat. The other uses cold.

The Fountain of Youth Aesthetic Spa in Greenwood Village has provided body sculpting services using radiofrequency (RF) technology since 2019. According to the FDA, when RF energy is carefully applied to the skin, it can cause heating in the layer of fat under the skin and in the strands that connect the skin to the fat layer. It causes fat cells to die without harming the surrounding tissue or skin. The fat cells are essentially liquified and removed through the body’s lymphatic system. Steve Cox, president of Fountain of Youth, describes the Vanquish body treatment as a noninvasive liposuction. “It uses radio waves to destroy fat cells. It’s ideal for people with a

BMI of 30 or more,” he says. Patients can experience results within a few days. An added benefit: RF also promotes collagen production which can aid in tightening skin, making it look firmer and more toned.

CoolSculpting, on the other hand, can be beneficial for individuals with a lower BMI. Also known as cryolipolysis, the treatment targets an area of pinchable fat and draws it by a vacuum into an applicator that cools the area for up to an hour, freezing and killing the fat cells. Because of this targeted method, it addresses smaller, specific areas of fat accumulation. Patients generally report seeing results one to three months after treatment once the body’s immune system removes the dead cells.

Whichever method you choose—hot or cold— you’ll likely need several sessions to achieve the desired results. Be sure to research the best method for you before making an appointment at your local medispa.
