TALK OF THE TOWN
KNOW SOMEONE who should be featured in AvidLifestyle? Tell me about them at hillary@avidlifestyle.com.
SPRINGING INTO ACTION THE WORD APRIL comes from the Latin Aprilis, but the meaning is not clear; some historians believe it comes from the Latin words aperire (to open) or apricus (sunny). And according to the Greeks, April is the month of Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and beauty. As hibernating animals come out of their winter sleep, birds fly back to settle and the spring harvest season begins, April is a burst of sights, sounds and senses that we all crave after winter. It’s also a time to celebrate new fashions, and our cover story offers a burst of color curated from renowned stylist, Hailee Luchessi. But before we talk trends, we take a look at the history of fashion in Colorado through today’s influence on Denver Fashion Week. Where there’s fashion, there’s food, art and culture—especially at the new Thompson Hotel. This iconic brand brings the swank with three new restaurants and bespoke art throughout. And if you’re looking to be part of the scene, Jing is the go-to for the most fashionable crowd around. This restaurant’s dishes and decor demand the hottest looks and their patrons know it. As for spring looks, expert makeup artist Erroll Perkins shares his insight on the color trends for the season and offers tips to look the part. We also take a look at nail salons and brands that are green, clean and doing their part to help the planet and our health.
E X P E R IE NC E D , T R U S T E D ADVI SOR.
With Earth Day on April 22nd, we spoke with local fashion designer Mona Lucero about her upcycled designs. Her story is so inspiring as are her works of wearable art. Another brand that’s all about fashion with impact and empowering women across the globe is Noonday Collection. Its work to create fair-trade sustainable jewelry and accessories allows women the chance to provide for their families and bring the global community together. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention celeb-soaked Aspen when we talk about fashion. We put together a guide to the chicest getaway in this historic and hip town complete with where to stay, dine, play and, of course, shop.

I like to think April symbolizes growth, new beginnings, fresh starts and when my creative energy starts to flow. I’ve been homing in on where that energy is pulling me, and although I’m terribly sad to leave, I know that following my heart and listening to my creative soul is what I need to do in this season of my life. So, this Fashion Issue will be my last as editor of AvidLifestyle, and I want to thank you all for allowing me to share my passions, my connections and my love for this community. I hope our paths cross again, but until then, know that AvidLifestyle will continue to bring you the curated, thoughtful stories you’ve come to love. With Gratitude,

THE REST IS HISTORY
// how it all started
Plus, with Denver Fashion Week gaining global recognition as the show for emerging designers, it’s no wonder the business of high-end fashion has found a new home on the Front Range. As we featured in our August 2021 issue, once Florence Müller, Avenir Foundation curator of textile art and fashion, brought the largest Dior collection (outside of France) to the Denver Art Museum in 2015 (not to mention when she curated the Yves Saint Laurent Retrospective in 2012) there was no turning back and no limit to what the new faces of fashion in Denver would do.
Standout Colorado Style By Hillary Locke Mujica
DENVER HAS come a long way since the pioneer days of 1858, when a small group of prospectors discovered gold at the base of the Rockies. But just like that “Pikes Peak or Bust” era, the Colorado “gold rush” we’re experiencing today has a lot to do with the foundation laid by our ancestors. That spirit of determination and ingenuity, forward thinking and community— these are the characteristics that still impact Coloradans today, and you can see that in our unique laid-back—yet stylish—wardrobes that local designers do best.
MOD MOUNTAIN BOUTIQUE | 215 WILCOX ST
Today, Denver Fashion Week serves as a platform to uplift local designers and provides a stage for many talented people to showcase their work. As a result, local designers have the opportunity to jumpstart their careers and further cement Denver’s fashion identity. And we have Müller to thank for all of this. She created the opportunity to go behind the scenes and experience fashion in a whole new light, and it’s those eye-opening aha moments that have allowed Denver designers to take center stage. With all eyes on the catwalk this April 3─10, it’s important to remember our roots. The settlers that came before us were trendsetters in their own right, and now we have the responsibility to tell their stories of hard work, passion and vision, and to elevate the personal style and selfexpression that defines us as Coloradans. denverfashionweek.com

Je ne sais quoi The New THOMPSON HOTEL—A Stylish Twist on the Urban Mountain Lifestyle By Kastle Waserman WHEN YOU WALK into the new Thompson Hotel in downtown Denver, a moodiness envelops you. The dark, warm tones of the interior feel like a comforting embrace with modern decor and elements of natural wood, stone and black metal giving a nod to mountain living in the middle of a busy city. “Our intent is to create an urban chalet,” general manager Amanda Parsons explains. From its style to its unique offerings, the Thompson Hotel carries through on that concept. It’s not surprising. Thompson has earned an almost cult-like following for its chain of boutique hotels located in “it” cities across the country. There are differentiators everywhere you look. ROOMS WITH A VIEWPOINT In the rooms, the cozy, dark design theme continues with one very special amenity, a Victrola. Thompson secured a partnership with the legendary turntable manufacturer, which introduced America to its innovative sound machines in 1906 and is currently known for its retro-style turntables and radios. Victrola relocated its headquarters to Denver in 2021, and the synergy with Thompson as a cultural tastemaker just made sense. Every room in the hotel features a Victrola product. A selection of vinyl albums—including some by Denver's own Lumineers and Nathaniel Rateliff—are available in suites equipped with a turntable. Guests can also borrow a Victrola Revolution GO portable record player from the front desk to take on the go. Parsons says Thompson wants to recognize the importance of music as an integral part of Denver’s identity. “Denver’s music community is pretty powerful,” she says. “It’s part of what makes this destination so great. You can see live music at almost every turn. We really wanted to honor that.” Other room features Parsons raves about are the floor-to-ceiling windows ("With the weather constantly changing in Denver, the light shifts throughout the day”) and the custom-made beds (“There is nothing better than climbing into a Thompson bed—it's heaven!”).

NOT JUST ANY FOOD AND BEVERAGE Thompson’s restaurant, Chez Maggy, brings in famed French chef Ludo Lefebvre, known for his Los Angeles restaurants, cookbooks and appearances in cooking competition television shows, including The Taste. Lefebvre oversaw the concept behind Chez Maggy and created a very personal dining experience through a menu that reflects his French background, while giving a Colorado spin to such dishes as a bison tartar and bison bourguignon. He even gave his own flair to the classic Denver omelet. “I cook the omelet French style, which is light and fluffy, not firm,” the chef says, revealing a few secrets. “Then instead
of putting cheese inside, I make a rich, creamy cheese sauce to put over the omelet.” Lefebvre’s wife, Krissy, grew up in nearby Littleton. In the years prior to the restaurant opening, the family spent a lot of time visiting Denver. The restaurant’s name honors Krissy’s beloved stepmother, Margaret, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver in 2019. Portraits of her hang on the walls in the restaurant. “Chez Maggy is a special tribute to my family,” he says. and a Victrola turntable. Guests can choose an album to play from a library of vinyl curated by Victrola’s CEO, Scott Hagen. Cocktail master Christopher Norton created the craft cocktail menu and wine selection, both of which deftly pair with a selection of après-ski-inspired foods, including fondue and charcuterie boards. The panoramic windows can be opened in the summer and closed on chilly winter days, allowing the bar to be available in all seasons. WHAT’S IN A NAME? Other fun details about the hotel are the namesakes of the spaces. The cocktail lounge, Reynard Social, is named after a playful trickster fox in European fables. after Market Street brothel owners Mattie Silks and Kate Fulton, who dueled in 1877 in what is now Commons Park over Silks’ lover, Cortez Thomson. “It’s a memorable story that probably not a lot of people are aware of, and guests can take that away as a little nugget of Denver’s history,” says Parsons. The Thompson offers a little something different for both travelers and locals. Or as Parsons says, “We want to provide a sense of place where you can find some inspiration, have some fun and have an experience.” THOMPSON DENVER 303.572.1321; thompson-denver.com

The yin and yang of JING creates some of Denver’s best dining By Heather Shoning JING IS a lesson in contrasts, and these balanced contrasts create a dining experience you’ll not soon forget. There is the light and the dark, the relaxed and refined, the yin and the yang. When Charlie Huang, a dishwasher in the Big Apple, moved to Colorado in the early ’90s, he had a clear vision for a group of restaurants, including the Jing trio (Aspen, Las Vegas and Denver) and Little Ollie’s and OBar. With partners Michael Ditchfield and Lawrence Yee, Jing Denver has been riding the wave of success for 15 years. “The vision that we have is to continue to grow in a very saturated market of restaurants,” Ditchfield says. “But put in quality enterprise with good service, good food and good management—that doesn’t get old.”

A-LIST ATMOSPHERE From the moment you walk in the door, you know you’re in for a unique experience. Architect Ann Motokane of Emiko Design and Heather Hassen, who was with Leopold Design when she worked on this project, led the design team, and Denverbased Jordy Construction built the space. The dark and relaxed area here is the lounge, where you can choose from all the same food and drinks, but you experience it in a warm, casual space where you can enjoy happy hour specials in a swanky lounge atmosphere. with low ambient lighting. A high-back, emerald green upholstered bench lines one wall. In front of it, round tables also have comfortable barrelstyle chairs with dark upholstery and nailhead detailing. At the same time, the center of the room features long family-style tables with leopard-print bar chairs. “And many people who want that energy of a happy hour, they enjoy the lounge, and we have one of the best happy hours,” says Jing partner Michael Ditchfield. “The dark leather and the lighting are very conclusive to that lounge bar feeling, while the energy on the other side is the white booths, the lighter flow, the ceiling, it’s geared to a more polished dining than a lot of other restaurants.”

The top menu items in the dining room include the Peking duck, which Ditchfield says is the finest around, followed closely by the sea bass. In the lounge area, Kobe sliders take top billing. He attributes the top-notch sushi to the chef’s collaboration between Denver the Las Vegas Jing. In addition to fantastic food, Jing offers extensive wine and sake lists and creative craft cocktails. “It’s a menu for everybody, Ditchfield says. “And Jing's slogan, ‘where taste meets elegance,’ describes taste in both in the food and the decor.” JING, Greenwood Village 303.779.6888; jingrestaurant.com

The dining room side features crisp white linens, white half-round booths and white leather upholstered chairs with rich emerald stripes to create a connection between the two seating area options. Huang’s vision for the restaurant included fire, water and earth as represented by the fireplaces, thoughout the lounge area the waterfall wall dividing the dining area and lounge and the lighted, white bamboo shoots. DIVINELY DIFFERENT MENU Both sides of the restaurant are polished, and they cater to the same clientele,” says Ditchfield. “Sometimes they prefer the lounge area, while other times, they’ll come in for a sit-down dinner in a beautiful environment.” The menu is the same on both sides, but you can enjoy happy hour in the lounge and on the patio. 28

Tips to refresh your space with updated WINDOW COVERINGS By Heather Shoning
AN OFT-OVERLOOKED design element, window coverings—when done right—will give your home the perfect “finished” look and feel. There’s plenty to consider. Will you choose draperies, curtains, blinds, shutters or shades—or a combination? There’s hardware and decorative add-ons, too.
TYPES TO CHOOSE FROM Draperies and Curtains Wait … aren’t they the same? Curtains are stationary and decorative; they don’t slide across the rod to open or close, while draperies do. Both options are often paired with sheers to filter out some light without completely obscuring the view. There are various options for customizing drapes and curtains, including length; different pleat styles, which will determine the fullness of the fabric; and the fabric itself.

Shades Contemporary shade options include cellular (or honeycomb) shades, which are über energy efficient because they trap air to create a layer of insulation. There are woven wood shades, roman shades, roller shades and more. Ginny Taylor, owner of A Better View Decor, sees her clients moving toward simple solutions. “People want one and done,” she says. Shades are a popular choice—especially today’s roller shades that come in an array of colors, opacities and design styles. Blinds and Shutters Horizontal and vertical blinds come in wood or faux wood and composite materials. They are lightweight and are available in a bevy of colors, finishes and slat sizes. While blinds can move up and down like a sash, shutters are a stationary unit within the window frame. Only the slats move. Choose from the traditional Southern style or a sleek, modern look. They’re available in wood as well as warp-free, UVresistant materials. Make It Sustainable Many window covering styles come in sustainable materials such as grasses and bamboo. “Green is something every window-treatment consultant should talk about,” she says. “We shouldn’t be on this planet to create more waste. I believe that we should at least be knowledgeable of what sustainable materials are out there in the world.”

Embellish Your Design The choices are nearly limitless for draperies and curtains, but one of her favorites is drapery tape, which can add a punch of color, texture, and design to the leading edge of split-draw drapery pair. Hardware components are another way to customize your window coverings look. For curtains and draperies, you might choose metal or wood, fluted or not fluted rod, simple or decorative finials. “Hardware stands on its own as a design element in the room,” Taylor says. Put It in Motion Motorized window treatments are the new normal in the window-covering industry. You can set “scenes” through an app, which automatically opens or closes window coverings based on a schedule you program. This is a great security measure when you’re on vacation.
A BETTER VIEW DECOR 720.333.6934; abetterviewdecor.com
WONKY WINDOWS All this is great, but what about windows that have unique shapes? And ones that are up too high to reach? No problem. Specialty blinds are available from Blind Corners & Curves that can accommodate nearly any shape or size. They come in a variety of colors, and motorization is the standard even for these highly custom blinds. While those windows reach to high peaks of your home are amazing for capturing the views, they can be a real problem when they allow UV in at the hottest part of the day ruining flooring, rugs and furniture or causing a glare when you’re trying to work or watch the television. You love your windows, but “you want to control the sun, when you want to,” says Blind Corners & Curves owner Brian Workman. “When you want them wide open, you hit a button, and they go all the way to the top.” The most important part, according to Workman, is that they are fully operable, so you don’t have to sacrifice the view—probably what you fell in love with about the windows, maybe even the home—with stationary window coverings! The most common motorization, according to Workman, is a rechargeable battery style, so there’s no need for wiring, and you can control the shades using your phone, Alexa or whatever home-automation device you choose. Shadow Play Makeup can build confidence and is a wonderful way to express yourself each day. By Erroll Perkins, makeup artist THE USUAL COLORS you’ll find in spring palettes are prominent again—peach, coral, pink, soft terracotta and sheer reds. One way to play up this trend is to create an easy monochromatic look using the same product on eyes, cheeks and lips. Dewy, glowing skin is also in for spring so make sure you’re sticking to your regular beauty routine—cleanse, serum, eye cream, face cream and sunscreen. To take it one step further, I create a “face cocktail” with True Botanicals Chebula Active Immunity Serum and Renew Pure Radiance Oil for extra radiance. Also, take a less-is-more approach to foundation for a more natural, fresh, hydrated glow. I like DIOR Forever Skin Glow and Airflash for a lightweight coverage that is undetectable. Blush really brings the face to life. Start off with a soft wash of blush all the way up to the temples for definition. Then add a touch of highlighter to temples, cheekbones and apples of cheeks for a radiant healthy look. Use light peach, pink or bronze shades for darker skin tones. Plump and juicy lips are the look of the season, and what better companion to a glossy lip than a glittery eye. Metallic shades for the eyes are huge year-round and really amp up a look without a lot of work.

NONTOXIC NAILS that shine By Maren Bartels
IF YOU’RE EATING CLEAN and boosting your healthy habits, you might want to look at your nail-care routine as well. Nontoxic nail salons are dedicated to delivering beautiful nails sans the bounty of no-no ingredients and chemicals. But what should you avoid? Here’s a list of the most unsafe ingredients: Formaldehyde (a carcinogen and skin irritant that makes polish shine and resist chipping); Toluene (a nail polish solvent that may also be a neurological toxicant); Butyl Phthalates (plasticizers for making polish flexible that have been banned from polish by the European Union as potential reproductive toxicants). Of course, there are more to avoid and even those that tout being clean may not be. A study published in Dermatitis in 2019 found four out of 28 lacquers claiming to be “formaldehydefree” actually contained the carcinogen, so look for other names it can go by, such as formalin or methylene glycol.
Also, it’s good to note that “clean” polish is really about the inhalation risk, so even though some of the chemicals (like camphor and acetone) in lacquers are probably fine on your nails, it’s still not a good idea to breathe them in large quantities. One of the best things you can do is paint your nails in well-ventilated areas.
PROSE NAILS PROSE Nails is all about nourished nails, and that starts with their three-step process: clean, treat and style. The salon’s signature manicure incorporates aromatic and replenishing products that hydrate and firm the skin like their exfoliating mask. It’s made with 45 % real fruit purée to effectively resurface and rejuvenate skin without irritation. And PROSE’s paraffin alternative is loaded with coconut oil, shea butter and Vitamin E to deeply hydrate and lock in moisture which is essential in our dry climate. PROSE NAILS, Cherry Hills, 720.506.4949; myprose.com
BASE COAT Pregnant with her fourth child, Denverite Tran Willis went to get a pedicure but was so nauseous from the harsh chemicals, she ended up leaving the salon with a mission to revamp the nail industry for customers and staff alike. And in 2013, Base Coat was born, committed to offering safe products for all. With one hundred different nontoxic shades that are 10-free (meaning they’re free of 10 harmful ingredients), Willis offers long-lasting, healthy nails that shine. Her polishes are available online at basecoatnailsalon.com and Nordstrom Spas across the country.
Clearly it can be overwhelming to know what’s safe and what’s not, and when you’re in need of a mani/pedi, what’s a gal to do? Check out these new salons and nail care brands dedicated to taking the guesswork out of the equation by offering upscale nontoxic and ethical nail services and products.

NOONDAY ARTISAN IN GUATEMALA
Being a fair-trade certified company means the artisans Noonday works with are paid a fair and dignified wage. In fact, these artisans are paid upfront with 50% at the time of the order and 50% when products are shipped to Noonday’s Austin warehouse. Additionally, Noonday Collection is a certified B corporation valuing the planet and people over profit. “Although there are less expensive and faster ways to make these designs, that’s not what we’re after,” Gellings shares. The dyes the artisans use are often made from grasses, roots, vegetables and berries. Other examples of upcycled resources used include artillery from conflict in Ethiopia, recycled brass in Kenya, paper beads in Uganda, achira seeds in Ecuador, ethically sourced leather in India and ethical bone. The dignified work created by Noonday Collection changes lives. According to Gellings, buying from Noonday helps alleviate poverty by providing sustainable jobs. It means a mother can provide for her kids, a woman can leave an abusive spouse and young girls can find freedom from sex trafficking. It means breaking the cycle of generational poverty and access to health care. All of this gives women from Rwanda to Vietnam, Haiti to Peru, Nepal to Guatemala, the courage to stand up for themselves, teaching a younger generation to use their talents and their voices for good.
Adoption was part of the company’s DNA when Honegger held the first Trunk Show in her home after returning from Rwanda. Today, that commitment to helping children find forever families is as strong as ever. In Honegger’s new book, Imperfect Courage, she tells the whole Noonday story, taking readers on a journey to discover their own imperfect courage to live a life of purpose. Today, Noonday Collection partners with 33 artisan groups in 15 different countries, designing a collection of handmade accessories and home goods. Honegger’s vision created a global marketplace while enabling these artisans to grow sustainably. “It truly is a partnership, says Noonday Ambassador and Donna Baldwin model,” Gina Gellings. “We share the trends that women in America are loving, and the artisans help design items using cultural techniques and craftsmanship to create unique pieces that make a lasting impact.” 57

In Rwanda, Honegger saw women eager to learn and with an aptitude for unique jewelry design, so she thought—what if I bring their artisan jewelry back to Texas to sell to friends, sending the money directly to the African women who worked so hard to design the pieces. Although it was a long shot, Honegger went for it. With the mission to create a flourishing world, where women have a voice, children are cherished, people have jobs and we are all connected, she founded Noonday Collection, a socially conscious fashion brand that uses fashion to empower women worldwide.

HOW DID ADOPTING one child from Africa launch a global fashion brand? In 2010, Jessica Honegger’s desire to be a mother took her to Africa to adopt her son Jack. It was then a need to help local women provide for their families became crystal clear to Honegger, but she didn’t really know how to provide the kind of help that would have a lasting impact.

LOOKING AND FEELING GREAT will never go out of style. And it’s why Mona Lucero, a fashion designer with a line by the same name, strives to create unique, fun and flattering garments— all while leaving as little mark on the planet as possible.
— Mona Lucero
“First, I want my clients to be able to express themselves through fashion; second, I want them to have fun,” says Lucero. “I want them to really enjoy it.” The designer line is available online or by appointment at her showroom in Denver. In the showroom, she often encounters women making self-deprecating statements about how they look in certain clothes or colors. But Lucero believes quite the opposite is true. “I always keep in mind how a piece will flatter a woman’s body,” she says. “Our bodies are always changing, and women have all different shapes, but I think every woman can be beautiful and look great in a particular piece of clothing.” Lucero practices sustainability in ways that just come second nature to her. Even before going into fashion, she upcycled used clothing with beads and buttons. She’s thrifty with fabric remnants, always looking for somewhere to use a piece instead of tossing it. Today’s line includes what she calls pop deconstructions, where she will combine two vintage t-shirts. A recent example is Atari with Che Guevara. “There’s a narrative behind it,” she says, “but I want the person who’s buying to come up with their own understanding.” Lucero attended art school, and today she incorporates her artwork onto some of her designs. Lucero has always prided herself on being original, and today she can take pride in being an influencer. Last year after doing several fashion shows, she got a sweet surprise. “A woman who attended some shows put together her own look similar to what I had done and tagged me on social media saying something like: ‘I’ve been influenced by Mona style.’ I was like, ʻGirl, I’m going to have to give you an outfit.ʼ” See Mona Lucero’s latest looks and what influences her on Instagram @monaluceroofficial. 60

HOTEL JEROME Walking into the historic Hotel Jerome is like stepping into a Ralph Lauren ad, oozing with layers of nostalgic style with a contemporary edge. The heritage of this hotel shines in every detail from the avant-garde cocktails at Bad Harriet to the original Chinoiserie Chippendale till, signed by every bartender who’s ever worked there. It’s in the classic design and dishes of Prospect, as well as the speakeasy-style Felix Roasting Co. with its pink slipper chairs, blue velvet banquettes and proprietary coffee blends, there’s something around every corner at this one-of-a-kind gem. Plus its suites offer floor-toceiling windows with views of Aspen Mountain and the local street scenes—it doesn’t get any better than this. 970.920.1000; hoteljerome.com THE LITTLE NELL As the saying goes, The Little Nell is the “Aspen of Aspen.” And although that might sound boastful, it truly does set the stage for an epic Aspen adventure. Nestled next to Aspen Mountain and at the top of the historic town, this well-appointed establishment is an art gallery, showcasing a modern aesthetic
throughout the hotel. From the bedding to the spa, the dining to the entertainment, The Little Nell is the definition of Aspen culture. Do not miss lunch followed by après (even though ski season is over, it’s still a thing) at Ajax Tavern. The truffle fries and champagne make for the ultimate extravagance while taking in top-notch people-watching. 970.920.4600; thelittlenell.com

CHICA Inside the Residences at The Little Nell is newcomer Chica. Serving up Latin American cuisine derived from celebrity chef, Lorena Gracia, the menu is bursting with vibrant flavors that revel in Latin culture. The Peruvian red snapper ceviche, lobster “croqueta,” baby back ribs “al pastor” and Mexican hot chocolate (complete with Guajillo Chili Chocolate) will knock your socks off. 970.900.6780; chicarestaurant.com/aspen CLARK’S ASPEN Clark’s Aspen is the 2nd location of MML Hospitality’s popular neighborhood oyster bar set in the historic and beloved former Little Annie’s location. The goal was to uphold much of the charm of the previous tenant, including fully restoring its mahogany bar, adding a bustling open kitchen to offer an alpine version of Clark’s dockside aesthetic but with a cozy Colorado fireplace of course. Serving freshly baked sourdough, overflowing lobster rolls, delicious burgers, New England clam chowda, cioppino 62

The building was once a brothel, and that sultry vibe is alive today with red velvet tufted booths, crisp white tablecloths, gold gilded mirrors and barely-there mood lighting. Favorite dishes include the lobster thermidor, Colorado rack of lamb and the cowboy ribeye with blue cheese bone marrow butter. 970.920.1893; steakhouse316.com FRENCH ALPINE BISTRO The local gem that is the French Alpine Bistro welcomes guests with candlelit tables that transport you to France. What to do
ASPEN ART MUSEUM This non-collecting institution presents the newest, most important evolutions in international contemporary art. The widely respected and innovative architect, Shigeru Ban, approached the design of the AAM with the goal of creating a unified relationship between the structure and its surroundings. The harmony between Aspen’s existing architecture and the surrounding beauty of the natural landscape is on full display from every angle of this building. Additionally, his devotion to humanitarian efforts in the wake of devastating natural and man-made disasters also plays a part in his works. For example, he designed housing solutions for residents of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and temporary housing for victims of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, the 2013 typhoon in the Philippines, as well as the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Shigeru Ban Architects also developed a cardboard cathedral for the city of Christchurch following the February 2011 earthquake in New Zealand and collaborated with professors and students to build 100 shelters made of paper tubes and local materials for victims of the Port-au-Prince earthquake in January 2010. 970.925.8050; aspenartmuseum.org

A spring getaway in Aspen calls for cool, collected and chic. The genesis to achieving an understated, elevated look at 8,000 feet begins and ends with layering. Start with a classic fur from the historic and quintessential, PITKIN COUNTY DRY GOODS. This clothier has been outfitting Aspen since 1969 with contemporary— yet classic—designs for men and women. 970.925.1681; pitkincountydrygoods.com SOUCHI Layer and luxe up your coat with a hand-loomed cashmere dress from Souchi, a local designer in Basalt who’s been creating luxury knitwear with her own two hands since 1997. 970.925.2580; souchi.com
BIKING With incredible mountain biking, road biking and endless miles of paths, there’s no better place to ride off into the sunset than Aspen. In fact, in 2020, the entire Roaring Fork Valley was deemed a Gold-Level Ride Center by the International Mountain Bike Association, which honors the world’s best destinations for mountain bikers of all levels. Get your adrenaline pumping on some on-mountain downhill trails at Snowmass Bike Park or just cruise around the picturesque valley and enjoy the sights. You can’t go wrong here, but the most iconic ride is to Maroon Bells. The route climbs 1,300 feet over nearly sev-
en miles from Highlands to Maroon Lake. The 16.2-mile round-trip route passes through countless aspen groves and underneath the watchful gaze of Pyramid Peak before rounding the bend for a splendid view of Maroon Bells, and eventually Maroon Lake.

THE ASPEN INSTITUTE Aspen made a name for itself as a cultural hub in the Rocky Mountains centered around the “mind, body, spirit” ethos established at The Aspen Institute. It has earned a reputation for gathering diverse, nonpartisan leaders, creatives, scholars and community members to address some of the world’s most complex problems. The goal of these convenings is to provoke impact and further improve action in the global community. The 40-acre campus, with openair venues, celebrates the natural landscape and interactive programming. This spring and summer they will be hosting events such as The Aspen Executive Seminar, Family Prosperity Innovation Community, Summer Words Writers Conference and Literary Festival, Seminar for Mid-America Foundation CEOs and the Aspen Global Health Ideas Conference. 970.925.7010; aspenmeadows.com/aspen-institute 64
