TALK OF THE TOWN

JINGLE ALL THE WAY WE HAVE FIVE family birthdays between December 22nd and January 15th. So, although I absolutely love Christmastime, it can also be overwhelming to ensure everything is just so, and that everyone feels loved and celebrated without missing any of the traditional holiday celebrations. But this year feels different. I don’t feel the usual agita I typically get come December 1st. In fact, I’m welcoming the craziness, even relishing in it, making up for lost time and being so darn thankful for my family, friends and community. I cannot wait to celebrate the season with gusto! This month is filled to the brim with events from Home for the Holidays at the Lone Tree Arts Center, Gingerbread Decorating at Park Meadows, Blossoms of Light at The Botanic Gardens, Santa Stampede at Hudson Gardens, Handel’s Messiah by the Colorado Bach Ensemble, Cherry Creek North’s Winter Wanderland and so much more. If you’re still up for more holiday cheer, there are some festive holiday cookies to be had at local bakeries that are sure to delight. And don’t forget to read about creating holiday cocktails with unexpected flavor profiles and garnishes—they'll get you ready to jingle and mingle. To further embrace the holiday spirit and celebrate, we spoke with event planner extraordinaire, Jaala Sheldon of Jaala & Co about how to create intimate gatherings with curated moments that instantly add magic and merriment to your home.

Although Santa is busy trying to get all the presents wrapped and ready for Christmas morning, his elves have offered up a go-to list from local shops for everyone on your list. And for a stocking stuffer that will light up Christmas morning like the top of the Chrysler Building, we asked local jewelers for their recommendations for bringing the bling! And we're oohing and ahhing over the fab-u-lous furs we photographed at Cherokee Ranch & Castle that are just perfect for everyday events and holiday glam. Finally, heading to the mountains during Christmas enhances that magic of the season, and the offerings throughout the Vail Valley are sure to make it the most wonderful time of the year—the crisp air, a blanket of fresh snow, warm cookies, cozy fireplaces and thousands of lights adorning the evergreen trees throughout. I know it’s simply the busiest time of the year but my Christmas wish is that you all embrace the crazy, messy, imperfectness of it all and feel the blessings of the season. Like Saint Nick, it will be gone in a flash so make sure to stop and smell the mistletoe! Merry everything to you and yours,

Hillary Locke Mujica

Cookie Crew Local bakeries lavish love and frosting on DELECTABLE COOKIES with a cult following By John Lehndorff Customers let out a nostalgic sigh when they see the pumpkin, molasses or oatmeal cranberry walnut cookies and the sugar cookies frosted for the season. Bird Bakery also offers decorateat-home sugar cookie kits.

DENVER’S SOUTHERN SUBURBS are extremely wealthy … at least when it comes to cookies. Seriously, the area from Greenwood Village to Cherry Hills is so well-endowed with cookie shops and bakeries that visitors might think we are just a little bit obsessed.

Bird Bakery Belleview Promenade, Greenwood Village 720.379.7951; birdbakery.com

We took it upon ourselves to thoroughly research the places baking first-class cookies that have reached cult-like status with local devotees. Gift these goodies to the cookie lovers on your holiday list this year and get some for yourself, too. PHOTO: COURTESY BIRD BAKERY

CRUMBL A sweet, chocolatey cloud greets you at the door to Crumbl and you emerge with a precious cargo, a pink box of big, soft, just-from-the oven cookies. Crumbl is a single-minded destination so popular that shops have popped up in Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Parker and other nearby towns. They offer just four or five varieties each week—and only for a week. Fans operate social media sites devoted to dissecting the latest cookies as if they were hot new video games. Crumbl’s always-available milk-chocolate cookie is so jammed with chips that it provides an almost molten chocolate middle. Among the rotating flavors are Cookie Dough Cookies, Waffle Cookies, Old-Fashioned Donut Cookies and Biscoff Lava Cookies. Insiders tell us the flavor guaranteed to cause long lines are the Buckeye Brownie Cookies topped with peanut butter fudge and dark chocolate. Bird’s chocolate chip cookies are Toll House-style classic–slightly bendable with golden-baked edges, the chew and the chocolatey, buttery, lip-smacking finale we love. SUGARICA COOKIES Sugar cookies decorated by cute frosted Santas are a dime a dozen this time of year. On the other hand, the cookies baked by Denver’s Sugarica (Shooger-eeka) are like little interactive Van Gogh exhibits. You almost feel bad eating the gorgeous high-end hand-painted masterpieces. Sugarica’s standard holiday sugar cookie designs include Grinches, snowflakes, autumn leaves in three shapes, Santas, poinsettias and Christmas trees, but they can also be personalized. Gingerbread cookies that can be hung on the tree (and dunked later) are also on the menu. Sugarica bakery delivers cookies locally and also ships them nationally. MINI ME PASTRY LAB Mini Me Pastry Bar believes there should be a knock-your-socks-off cookie for everybody, no matter their dietary needs. “Healthy” baked goods always seem to be missing something, but the Keto and gluten-free cookies at the Englewood-based bakery are gems everyone will crave. Loaded with ground toasted nuts, the hazelnut cookies are a shortbread-like pleasure. The chocolate chocolate-chip cookies made with almond and coconut flours are totally satisfying and sugar free. The shop also makes almond-flour French macaron cookies in an array of flavors and colors. Mini Me Pastry Lab offers pickup in Englewood and delivery in the Denver metro area. CLASSIC SUGAR COOKIES 1 cup salted butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 large eggs, room temperature 2 ½ to 2¾ cups all-purpose flour ¾ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt Method: Cream together butter and sugar in the bowl of a standing mixer. Add vanilla and eggs and beat until combined. Add flour, baking powder and salt and beat until combined. Divide dough into two equal portions. Shape each piece of dough into a round, flat disc and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or overnight. Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Line two to four large baking sheets with parchment paper, set aside. Remove one sugar cookie dough disc from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften slightly. Place sugar cookie dough on a floured surface and roll to ½” or ¼” thickness (thicker = softer cookies). Use your favorite cookie cutter shapes and cut out the dough and place them 1” apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Repeat until all the dough is used. You can gather and re-roll the dough scraps two additional times (3 times total). Bake in the preheated oven for 9-10 minutes or until cookies are puffed and just set around the edges. Remove and let sit on cookie sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with second disc of dough. Decorate as you wish and enjoy! 22

Stir It, Shake It, Make It Scrumptious

MANY WISE QUOTES speak to the idea that success exists all in the details. From deconstructing a winning basketball play to putting the finishing touches on an avant-garde gown, it’s the underlying components that tend to make the biggest splash. Your bar cart this season should be no exception. Whether you are polishing your edible garnish game for the holiday festivities or just searching for the perfect mixers to layer your libations, we have a craft list of cocktail accoutrements and additions that are certain to freshen up this year’s cheers. DRAM APOTHECARY Homegrown herbaceousness Dram Apothecary is a husband-and-wife team that crafts herbal goods right here in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Their lineup of award-winning CBD sparkling waters, homemade bitters, syrups and switchels (“a tart and tangy beverage historically enjoyed by farmworkers to keep them hydrated and healthy on long days”) can be mixed into any cocktail, or simply enjoyed with your favorite spirit on the rocks. We recommend building a simple gin & tonic with Dram’s lemongrass sparkling CBD water, “sprucing” up an Old Fashioned with its pine syrup or, adding a dash of autumnal earthiness to a margarita with their Palo Santo bitters. “Our Palo Santo Bitters pairs really well with the flavors of fall—apple cider, cinnamon, whiskey, pumpkin pie,” says Shae Whitney, founder of Dram Apothecary. “They’re very versatile and can be added to any recipe for a bit more smokiness and woodiness.” If you’re taking it easy on the booze this season, try Dram’s Ginger Cinnamon Switchel, a sparkling tonic with prebiotics and 25 mg of Colorado CBD hemp per can. RED CAMPER PICNIC SUPPLY The cherry (or peach) on top If you’re looking for unique, specialty ingredients to add some pizzazz to your holiday punch then reach for the jammy goodness from Denver’s own Red Camper. This small company “celebrates place by way of specialty fruit condiments made from region-specific ingredients,” says Maura Gramzinski, founder of Red Camper. “Red Camper has always been about travel and the experiences gathered while doing so.” The best-seller is the original Colorado Whiskey Peach Deliciousness, preserves that will elevate peach Bellinis, make a stellar Bourbon & peach sweet tea or perk up a Manhattan—Colorado

Intimate Holiday Gatherings The more the merrier, but WHEN IT’S JUST A FEW, IT CAN BE DELIGHTFUL TOO! By Heather Shoning COZY, INTIMATE GATHERINGS can be some of the most memorable ones because you can dedicate more time to connecting with the ones you love. They’re also the perfect opportunity to (finally!) incorporate all those special details you’ve been pinning on Pinterest for years but have never had the time or patience to make happen for a whole crowd. So, whether you’re celebrating at home or going away for your family holiday, here are some tips to make it terrific. SETTING THE SCENE Choosing a theme for your holiday can help narrow your focus when it comes to decorating, details and maybe even the food. You can choose a theme for the décor such as a specific color like winter white or crystal blue. Maybe a simple “winter” motif such as snow (snowflakes and snowpeople) or winter lodge (wood and pine cuttings with checked or flannel ribbons) works for your family. And, of course, there are religious holiday themes you may settle on based on your personal beliefs. These themes can also blend together seamlessly for a perfectly “you” holiday. Once your theme and/or color palette is set, dress up your home, second home or Airbnb for the holidays by thinking in terms of vignettes. Create little pockets of holiday décor here and there. The mantel is, of course, an obvious spot. “Entryway tables are a great place for themed decorations,” says Michelle Moriarity, interior designer, marketing director and buyer for Carla’s A Classic Design. “I always tell my clients to keep their collections grouped together for greater impact. For instance, keep your nutcrackers all together and add in some sparkly trees and a festive table runner.” In addition, Moriarity says to use cocktail tables to play off the décor design on the mantel and create a holidayscape on the dining room buffet. Maybe you want to include outdoor space in your plans. If it’s cold, this can present some challenges but nothing you can’t handle. A fire pit is a great place to gather, sing carols or Ma’oz Tzur and enjoy hot chocolate with toasted marshmallows. Don’t forget the mulled wine or spiked spiced cider for the adults! Bring outdoor heaters to supplement the fire to ensure everyone stays toasty all evening long. “I always encourage my clients to embrace the outdoors for winter parties,” says Denver event planner, Jaala Sheldon of Jaala and Co. Her top tips for making it enjoyable: cover seating with a faux fur, lambskin or even electric blankets for extra warmth and, in addition to a fire and 29

outdoor heaters, candles help set the tone as well as create a greater sense of warmth. “Just let guests know the event will be outdoors and ask them to dress accordingly,” she says. “We’re Coloradans; we know how to dress in layers.”

palate and you can just focus on immediate family and/or friends. Don’t forget to set a table to remember. Layer your linens, top beautiful chargers with fine china or your favorite holiday dinnerware. Pull out (or buy new) napkin rings. “I always choose quality over quantity,” Sheldon says. “A fabulous way to show your guests that you’ve really put thought and planning into the dinner is to use handwritten place cards—it’s a really special touch.” And create a gorgeous tablescape with candles, fresh flowers and herbs, ribbons, evergreen sprigs, Christmas balls … whatever fits your theme or color palette. The key to a terrific looking table is lots of layering and centerpiece items of varied heights (but don’t let them impede conversation).

ing frames to add to your décor throughout the home. Have small kids? Make sure Elf on the Shelf is nearby. Enjoy family game night. Even if you love to bake cookies with the kids, consider having some custom cookies made to commemorate the special holiday from a local bakery. If you can dream it, Denver’s Sweet Fabula can put it on a cookie. And be sure to pick up gingerbread house kits from Gateaux Bakery for an entire evening worth of fun. Make special cookie or baked clay decorations with the kids to use around the house or to give as gifts. Carla’s A Classic Design helps clients make intimate gathering memorable with gift bags. “We create special bags with a small candle, a festive holiday item and candies that can be placed at each place setting on the dinner table,” says Moriarity.

DARLING DETAILS Now it’s time for some real fun! The details make all the difference. Don’t forget to match your gift wrap to your décor! Gather special past-holiday photos and frame them in match-

The most important part of an intimate holiday gathering is the quality time with those you love. Hire a photographer to join in your festivities and capture the special moments that you can frame for next year’s holiday décor.

And don’t forget to bring some décor outside where you plan to gather as well as the front of the home. Even if you’re not having many—or any—guests, a decorated front entry is well worth it simply for your personal welcoming home each day. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Hot chocolate. Check. Toasted marshmallows. Check. Now what about the real meals? Take a cue from your theme or go with your favorite traditional meal. But, since your party is small, kick it up a notch. If you normally roast a turkey, consider a traditional Christmas goose this year. Up level to a horseradish-encrusted beef tenderloin. Add a vegetarian side such as a roasted garlic polenta mash. Observe traditions other than your own: latkes and matzo ball soup, mince pie, tamales or catfish and collard greens. The sky is really the limit when you don’t have to worry about pleasing everyone’s 30

FUR fly

Everything you need to know about SUSTAINABLE FUR right now—or upcycling your cozy coats of yore. By Kathryn O’Shea-Evans

THERE IS A SCENE in the fifth season of Friends when longtime vegetarian Phoebe Buffay inherits a family heirloom mink coat in horror...and then promptly falls in love with it when she sees her fur-swaddled reflection in a mirror. Indeed, there’s a reason people have been donning fur coats for millennia, and it has nothing to do with the perceived glamour: they are as warm in January as a Colorado 14er is cold. And like an old piece of quality jewelry, fur can often be restyled to suit today’s tastes— transformed from a clunky coat your great Aunt Gertrude wore into something you’d see on a Milan runway today. “As far as restyle, we don’t like to do it unless we do it right,” says Dan Sharp, who founded Dan Sharp Luxury Outerwear 14 years ago. His company provided most of the “lewks” (to use the parlance of the internet) photographed on these pages. In addition to vintage jewelry, the brand also offers exceedingly opulent pieces in haute couture and ready-to-wear, contemporary lines often designed by Sharp himself. “We do luxury outerwear and a lot of shearlings. It’s come into the 21st century with a lot of color, and a lot of sheared pieces.”

To revamp a tired jacket that’s been languishing in the back of your closet but is still workable, Sharp, a Colorado native, may recommend having it transformed into another piece by his network of talented and skilled pros in Italy and New York—a process that takes only three or four weeks. “We do blankets and vests,” he says. “You can also update older pieces by doing a beautiful throw.” A dated piece can become “now” once again through the process. Sharp often recommends opting for an unexpected new lining that calls to you, “whether it’s a psychedelic 60s print or fuchsia pink in satin or silk.”

If it’s a brand-new fur coat you seek, you may be interested to know that in many key ways, the industry is changing fast. “I work for Saga Furs—we collect and sell farmraised fur from Europe and North America,” says Charlie Ross, general manager of Saga Furs North America, Inc. “All our fur comes from certified farms which, in addition to government inspections, have third-party audits: outside organizations that do the inspecting. We’re the leaders in animal welfare standards.” He points to Furmark (furmark.com), a new global certification and traceability system, that is working to improve animal welfare and environmental standards in the industry.

51

Ross also highlights the “waste not” ethos of the fur industry. “‘Circular economy’ is a buzzword in our industry today, because in fur farming, animals eat food from the waste of other distribution channels,” he says. “In

Finland, where Saga is headquartered, the diet is primarily fish. Humans eat the middle of the fish, and animals eat the byproducts—heads and tails that are ground up into cereal. We are subsidizing the fishing industry, making sure those items don’t get put in landfills.” Similarly, the animal manure is used in local agriculture to fertilize fields and greenhouses, and their carcasses are often transformed into pet food. Even the smallest scraps of fur that are trimmed away from a pattern are collected and sewn into fur plates: a very fashionable look. And unlike, say, polar fleece—a soft-napped fabric made from polyester plastic that can take 200 or more years to decompose— a fur coat is comparatively earthy when it reaches the end of its life cycle. It’s “a natural product, but has a long life cycle,” Ross says. “When a mink coat finally goes to the end of life, it [the fur itself—not the lining or zipper] degrades at the same speed as a leaf.” 52

Guardians of the Galaxy INFLUENCERS

How a tiny Colorado community led THE WAY TO THE MILKY WAY

DEDICATION STAR PARTY OF SMOKEY JACK OBSERVATORY, 2015. PHOTO: WILSON JARVIS

By Jessica Hughes ON A CLEAR NIGHT, illuminated planets, twinkling stars, meteor showers and the spiraling galaxy of the Milky Way, fill the night sky. But most won’t ever see the celestial show in the sky. In the city, the night sky appears to go dark after sunset, but there is an entire other world waiting to be seen if you’re willing to stay up past your bedtime! Over the years it has become increasingly difficult to see the billions of stars that come out at night, let alone the Milky Way, near any metro area. It is estimated that 80 percent of the population in the United States and Canada live where light pollution blocks the views of the stars and Milky Way, meaning there are many children, let alone adults, who will never witness this rich celestial mosaic. In order to fully enjoy the night sky and all its beautiful details, typically, one must venture to secluded places in the mountains or travel far from city limits to avoid light pollution. But with efforts led by the International Dark Sky Association, a Dark Sky Community designation brings the show closer to home. There are currently 33 Dark Sky Communities in the world and the Colorado towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff lead the way as the state’s first certified Dark Sky Communities (with the towns of Crestone, Norwood and Ridgway following after). With their commitment to implement special efforts to preserve and protect the night sky, future generations will be able to see the night sky the way our ancestors once did. To become an IDA International Dark Sky Community the town must show an exceptional dedication to preserving the night sky by adhering to strict implementation and enforcement of quality outdoor lighting ordinances, dark sky education and citizen support. Such steps include adding shielding units to outdoor lights so that light is being directed down and not up, minimizing blue lights, limiting the luminance levels from area signage and numerous others. Due to their location, nestled between two parallel mountain ranges—the Wet and the

Sangre de Cristo mountains—Westcliffe and Silver Cliff are perfectly situated with the surrounding peaks blocking out much of the skyglow from nearby cities such as Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Plus, with an elevation of 8,000 feet, the communities physically sit closer to the stars than any other Dark Sky community in North America, making them the ideal place for stargazing and watching the Geminids meteor shower this December. The best way to experience the night sky is in Westcliffe with a visit to Bluff Park and the Smokey Jack Observatory. Visitors can arrange a visit or attend one of their dark sky parties to get an up-close look at the moon, colliding galaxies, Saturn’s ring, and exploding stars—all through the state-of-the-art, 14-inch computerized telescope. 61

december 2021 // AvidLifestyle

Stargazers can also gather on their own at Bluff Park. Overlooking the Wet Mountain Valley and the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the park not only provides picturesque views during the day, but also provides front row seats to the thick blanket of stars that light up the night sky. The Geminid meteor shower is said to peak on December 13 - 14, 2021 with an impressive 150 or more meteors per hour visible in a dark sky. These meteors are known to be bright and colorful, making them one of the favorites to watch. Whether you plan to watch the meteor shower or just gaze up at the night sky, Westcliffe and Silver Cliff will provide front row seats for the best nightlife experience in Colorado.
