film institute Currently a work in progress for our second-year studio class, the objective of this project is to design a film institute for the Cincinnati area, specifically in OTR (Over-the-Rhine). Located in 1405 Walnut Street, the site includes an existing shell of approximately 2,500 sq. ft. on three-four floors and a newly designed addition that requires a building of around 10,000-12,000 sq. ft.

5

The first step into starting the project was creating spatial and atomospheric perspective vignettes. The one to the left is an assemblage of three collages while the ones below are a collage of a desired space for the film institute.

6

The three images on the top are conceptual models made out of bristol, basswood sticks, and illustration board. The model to the immediate right is the next stage into the iteration process of the exterior shell of the film institute.

7

pavilion The pavilion project was the final project of the first year for SAID. The goal of the project was to construct a human scale folly in a specified site to serve as a human interaction that acts as a continuous maze from one folly to another. The group constructions were to fit within a 8’ x 8’ x 8’ site, consisting of only a specified kit of parts, which included 45 2x4s, 6 sheets of MDF, and another material that would be relevant to the design. Using Rhino and Sketchup, I modeled the early phases of the folly to try and solidify the concept.

8

Our group of nine developed several iterations to try to develop Our idea of a three-level “experience for the user. We incorporated the design concepts of line, plane and volume in order to strengthen the design experience.

insertion This objective of this project was to design an insertion piece onto the existing building of Alms, which is one of the four buildings that consists of the School of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning. The limits of the insertion were loosely undefined, giving us the freedom to design whatever felt to be the best response to the design of the Alms building.

10

My design proposal was located on the north facing facade of the Alms building. I chose this face because I wanted the students to experience as much natural light as possible as well as having a clear and airy view of DAAP and the surrounding Cincinnati campus.

11

With each iteration, I chose certain angular and geometric line work that I felt would be most appropriate for my design approach towards the final model of the insertion. Collages were then made to further explore the light and mood that I would want to emit for the space.

12

The collages above show more of the interior space developed and how the natural lighting interacts with the space. Glass and concrete as the exterior materials were used because I wanted to create a space with a balance of durability and lightness. With these two elements working together, they create a monolithic beacon that serves as a breath of fresh air for the students.

13

The final model is made out of birchwood, museum board, and acrylic sheets. Built at 1/8 scale, the intent of the final model was to show the exterior and some interior of the Alms building and also how the insertion model interacts with the building.
