This Parklet is Rubbish, Competition for a Small Public Intervention | Project Lead | 2019 Ongoing, London UK.
JOY
Such playfulness will bring people together from all ages and backgrounds, provoking moments; a joke with a stranger, a boogie with a grandma, a game of peekaboo with a toddler; satisfying the public's desire to explore their physical and social boundaries. The creation of such an interruption offers the chance for a brief interlude in our day, bringing delight to the user and with it play back to the city once more.
a bench can become a destination
Why don’t we PLAY in our streets anymore? Chalk on the kerbside and bunting tied to a lamppost have become nothing more than nostalgic notions to most of us. We experience streets with our heads bowed down, staring into the colourful void of our iPhones seeking distraction from the concrete, steel and tarmac landscape which forms the gloomy backdrop of our daily commutes. Our approach for the parklet seeks to develop a language of playful elements, crafted out of unexpected, found materials which would previously have been lost to landfill. By interrupting the cold efficiency of today's streets, we hope to create a happier, more comprehensive urban landscape punctuated with moments of joy sprinkled amongst the everyday environment.
the well-functioning city must be at once play-FULL and playful
Beautifully crafted out of salvaged materials and community participation, the space will prompt an unexpected awareness that this moment of joy has been sculpted from what others would consider rubbish. Such a realisation would reinforce the playfulness of the assembly, much like the discovery of an old tyre swing or a bin lid used for an afternoon of sledging, all whilst highlighting the significance of recycling in our collective future.

Abigail Hinchley
INTERIOR DESIGNER, BA(Hons)
I began my professional career in 2017 after graduating from The University of Westminster's Interior Architecture course. Whilst studying, I won the VOLA award for best model & material investigation and participated in workshops in both London and New York. I moved to Australia to complete an exchange programme at RMIT where I discovered and learnt about global influences in design. Working for Perkins + Will has enabled me to research, develop and understand the progression of the future workplace and the impactful role of the designer as well as discover the importance of sustainable design and personal wellbeing. Social responsibility is a fundamental aspect of our culture and every year the company donates 1% of our time to initiate and execute projects that serve the broad society.

URBAN DESIGNER, BSc(Hons)
I joined P+W in 2018 after graduating from University College London (UCL) where I studied Geography. During my studies I undertook extensive research into vertical farming practices, urban food sustainability, the internet of things and smart city development. I also undertook research into socio-environmental inequality in cities, looking particularly at air quality in London. I am currently working on several international masterplanning projects at P+W, focusing on research and analysis. I am interested in how urban design can transform social wellbeing, and create healthy cities which are resilient to future threats and climate change.
