INVESTIGATION PLACES

“A WETLAND is an area of land that is either covered by water or saturated with water. The water is often groundwater, seeping up from an aquifer or spring. A wetland’s water can also come from a nearby river or lake. Seawater can also create wetlands, especially in coastal areas that experience strong tides.” “A SWAMP is a wetland permanently saturated with water and dominated by trees. There are two main types of swamps: freshwater swamps and saltwater swamps. Freshwater swamps are common in inland areas. Saltwater swamps protect coasts from the open ocean.” Definition - NATIONAL GEOGHRAPHIC

LAKE LINLITHGOW

Lake Linlithgow (Jenawarra) is situated 15 km east of Hamilton, towards Penshurst. The lake is a major resource for water birds, which also use four nearby State Wildlife Reserves. The question as to what original tree vegetation was around the lake is interesting. We have not been able to obtain much information. However, that evidence is not entirely consistent with the reports of Robinson or of Tyers who saw the country in 1839 and 1841 before any clearing was undertaken. By 1861, when Wilhelm Habel arrived, the first German settlers had 8 years to clear away most of the vegetation to allow cultivation... Rod Bird, Steve Clark and Murray Gunn

KOO WEE RUP SWAMP

‘THE KOO WEE RUP, also known as The Great Swamp and was fed by about 10 creeks and rivers but mainly by the Bunyip River with headwaters in the cool temperature rainforests and Mountain Ash forest of the Central Highlands 25 km north” “The edge of Kooweerup Swamp, Cardinia Creek drain in foreground, The Inlets opening on the mangrove-fringed. The waterway reserve supports diverse, high quality native vegetation almost throughout. Old groeth Kooweerup Swamp scrub occurs on inland sites and forms a sharp boundary with saline, treeless estuary and saltmarsh vegetation” Jeff V. Yugovic

EDITHVALE WETLANDS -CARRUM

The Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands are a group of two principally freshwater swamps, totalling 261 hectares The wetlands contain 14 ecological vegetation types. Three of state significance are plains sedgey wetland, tall marsh dominated by common reeds, and brackish aquatic herbland. There are several regionally significant populations of plant species, such as southern water-ribbons, only previously known in the state from western Victoria...
