CASE STUDY 1 National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad

I have proposed a Vocational Training center in Ahmedabad. The site is in the centre of the city. Its located next to Sabarmati Riverfront, Sardar bridge on the new city and can be easily accessed using the AMTS facility and the upcoming Metro rail. This will serve as a covenient and safe travel option for the commoners. The riverfront acts as an interface between East and West Ahmedabad thereby providing great opportunities. The selected site is proposed for public institutional land use as per SRFDCL plan. A Vocational Training Center in Ahmedabad in an effort to collaborate the inexperienced but talented designs students with the experienced housewives with a keen eye for stitching. We see many ladies with a zest for stitching, sewing and knitting, with a willingness to stay updated with the fashion trends but are unable to do so because they are preoccupied with their families and children.

This center will provide them with anopportunity to bring out their talents and fulfill their dreams. It will serve as a great learning platform for the people undertaking training at this Vocational center. The centre will deal with user groups of different ages. It is conceived as an a dditional part of the existing NID infrastructure but deals with a different user group. It is accomodates orientation facilities, workshops and display areas to communicate the talent with the city. The center is also provides a public space for city people. The site is near the center of the city welcoming people from either side of the river. This intervention is in close vicinity to NID campus and visually compliments the latter. The center lends great importance to a dual circulation program - public and private. This center will be a collaborative effort of the experienced and the inexperienced, the old and the new ideas in order to uplift the Design Industry of Ahmedabad.

02 S P O R T C E N T E R Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad Sport has always been important for recreation and awareness for a wide range of audience ranging from children, elder citizens, youth and sports persons. The project proposed a new sports center for the city of Ahmedabad. The site selected for the same is the Sabarmati riverfront near Sardar bridge, paldi and is also proposes for a sport center land use as per SRFDCL plan. My site was particular for its change in level which I exploited it and created opportunities access from lower level, Public could be watch sport activities which running below. The Front Elevation of the building was primarily decided by the notion of merge into the ground, thus offering as a public area from outside. Finally, I aimed to create a public space around the sport center which maintaining the views and encourage sports activites. The implementation of a light source and planing of the design which is not work out well.

Due to globalization and immense growth, there has been rapid change in the city in last two decades; the standard of living has also grown in leaps and bounds. People indulge in a wide range of activities and hobbies in their leisure time for entertainment and beat stress. At sports Center; I believe in encouraging various sports & activities that explores an individual talent and gives you a break from the daily monotonous life. Apart from its large space for amenities; Sports center will also have prominent trainers, which making the centre an excellent venue for socializing with the prominent crowd of the city.

An aquarium has been an important public institution across the globe. Aquaria have always been important for education, observation and awarness for a wide range of audiences ranging from children, to researchers, students and volunteers. They allow us to observe the wonders of the underwater world up close and help us appreciate the wealth of our water. At the same time, they also contribute to the identity of the city as demostrated in various examples across the globe. The objective of studio 8 program was to propose a new aquarium for the city of Ahmedabad. The site selected for the same is the Sabarmati riverfront. The design challenges would involve coming up with a new typology of a public aquarium for the city while addressing certain burning ethical questions that surround the natural environment. Before initiating the design of an aquarium, it was imperative to get adequate knowledge about aquatic life for which a brief aquatic research study was done. I took clownfish for my study. I wanted to create indirect lights in core of the space where circular water tanks were connected to eachother through long tunnel at ground level to top level thus a person’s journey become eye opner.

The main intention of this studio was to express the Identity and Architecture. The brief was to design high rise headquaters for bandhan bank, which is Micro finance bank for all classes at Bandra Kurla Complex in Bombay. The character of the bank is such that it accepts loans of all amount, but the headquaters has functions like any other bank. The main function of this building are: Bank branch offices, bank headquaters (office work spaces for different departments), auditorium and more than 50% of the building is rental. Challenging in high rise design was over power monotony and to create recreation spaces. I have tried to break it and make them more playful, visual, enjoyable, easily accessible and connected through balconies and atriums that brings natural light and healthy livable spaces inside of the building. I have explored to create colorful vertical slider panels as an outer facade of the building. The facade uses architectural elements that protect the building from sun and rain. Thus the facade has its own identity in the high rise.

The housing engages architecture with challenges of contemporary urban strategies. Today’s metropolitan region shows tremendous diversity and complexity with significant global shift in the pattern of urban growth. Architecture has an important role understanding changes in the contemporary urban conditions. Migration from village to city restructures whole need for housing and demands understanding social intergrity between people, such a major shift also tend to affect the psychology of people who have migrated. Indeed they have to be lifted up but within valuing their current Interaction. The brief was to make a housing for 40 migrated workers. The studio focuses on realizing these issues and possiblities to create cities by reviving these connections. Keeping in mind the climate, temperature and location of the site I have designed this housing with large central courtyard, small gathering green spaces for informal interaction. The Intention of this particular design was to create hierarchy between indoor and outdoor activities. I have lifted up plinth from ground level to avoid mud puddles in concern for vehicular and pedestrian movement. One typical cluster showing the relation between small gathering space and people.

In nature; form, material and structure are inseparable. It inspires the man to understand the logic of its formation that stems outs of its own necessity towards growth, its stability and it’s material composition that enable it to take form. The studio aimed to understand a construction material based on a natural object. Studio systematically explores the possibility to learn forms in nature using sketching, abstract drawing and modeling in order to unearth organic ideas. This studio explored the possibilties of materials to take up various geometrical forms.

Based on the object studies and principals, one has to use the principals to propose a design for 25 people on western ghat who will occupy this space for 15 days. I have selected a natural object as Peacock’s feather in this studio. Taking the section of its steam and understanding its growth patterns, characteristics, the structural properties were translated architecturally keeping in mind different functions, light quality and the site.

The Studio focus was on to designing a Shahi Mahal in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh. Keeping in mind Form, Order and Organization, I have designed a palace for a king having three wives and servant quaters. The Intention of this particular design was to create hierarchy, privacy and to get view from all side through each space.

A r t i s t ’s R e s i d e n c e Cept Jungle, Ahmedabad The Intent of the studio was to design Artist’s residence. There were three main vertical elements used in whole design; glass, jali and walls based on the function of the spaces without cutting the existing trees. I have created dining space as the central connecting area and maintain transparency using jali and rest of the spaces were connected visually.

Step 1: Anthrometric studies of a particular profession. Step 2: Through the help of colored strips in hollow wooden cube to understand the basic elements of space organization and movement. The exercise was to have a program and function as per students wish and student had to fit different functions in the particular size cube. The connection between these spaces can be only through staircase and ramp. Between these starircase and ramp one hase to design the spaces. The intention of particular design was to create a maze through the staircases as an architectural element with placement of spaces such that it adds an element of suprise.

The intention of this exercise was to understand movement of the people based on their age.

The aim of the space making glass workshop was to sensitize the participants towards various glass craft techniques (Stained glass, Sandblasting, Etching, Staining, Slumping, Fusing and Engraving etc). Bringing craft design innovation in glass with emphasis on the interior architecture applications was largely experienced through its process of co creation.
