Dear Friends, The Report of Annual Giving tells the story of the generous alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who contributed to Avon Old Farms School during the 2015–2016 school year. I am proud to announce that we raised, in terms of cash and pledges, well more than 15 million dollars, the most support we have ever garnered in a single year! These funds will be thoughtfully used to support our operations as well as our strategic goals and will dramatically impact our ability to provide our young men with exceptional educational opportunities. Our strong, burgeoning culture of giving is a testimony to the loyalty we inspire within the Avon community because of the transformational experiences students receive here. Your gifts signify how deeply you believe in Avon’s mission and how clearly you recognize the powerfully enduring ways in which we impact our students. Thank you very much for your substantial, continuing support of our school. Glenn Sieber, the interim director of development this past year, effectively led our development team as they worked with our school family to accomplish the lofty goals set by our board of directors. Congratulations to Glenn and his entire team, including Bill Austin, ’91, the chair of the board’s development committee. We enjoyed 100 percent participation in annual giving from our board of directors and our faculty again this year and sincerely appreciate the many gifts we received from members of the Avon Old Farms community. Our students and faculty strive daily to be worthy of your support. Certainly, the past school year was exceptional from any perspective. From the noteworthy accomplishments of our scholars highlighted by the impressive list of colleges at which members of the Class of 2016 will matriculate in September, to

the success of the athletes who won league championships in four sports—hockey, basketball, squash, and baseball—to the impressive list of regional and national honors students in our performing and visual arts program captured, to the recordsetting achievements of students in our community service initiatives, the 2015–2016 school year will always be a proud chapter in school history. Avon Old Farms is educating boys and inspiring men by challenging students to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives. On behalf of our faculty and students, I again thank you for helping us fulfill our mission and for supporting us, advocating for us, and believing in us. As we look to the future with high ambitions, we recognize that we are going to require your continued allegiance and loyalty to achieve our goals. I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.

FROM T H E DIR EC TOR OF DEV ELOPMEN T

Dear Avonians, Twenty-three years ago, my wife, Karen, and I moved to campus as recent college graduates, looking to gain experience in the world. Little did we know that working at Avon Old Farms would become much more than just a job. I enjoyed the long hours, hard work, and time with the boys as a teacher and coach; however, the community made Avon Old Farms our home. As we embraced the Avon experience, our plan of moving back to the Boston area quickly changed; our children enjoyed playing in the quad, eating in the Riddle Refectory, and having countless older brothers during their childhood. In 2012, our only son, Matt, graduated from Avon. I always knew we challenged our students to become their best selves, but I did not truly realize the impact until I saw my son’s experience. Avon is a special place, and I am privileged to call it home. Over the years, I served Avon in many different capacities. Many may remember me as the teacher running the work program, an academic dean, or, most recently, the provost. Teaching was consistent in each of my roles. I love to teach, and it was always important for me to stay connected with the students. Equally important, I created programs for teachers and students to explore new opportunities and challenges. Now, students can take online classes through our summer program, learn about engineering in one of the Project Lead the Way classes, investigate the evening sky during our new Intersession program, or learn to build robots on our first robotics team. With the hard work of faculty, Avon programs have evolved tremendously. This spring, I spoke about these changes at events in Boston, Chicago, and New York City. Alumni are excited about the new programs, and many wish

aspirando

they had been available during their tenure at Avon. Alumni also offered their support for these programs and new initiatives. Since the announcement of my new role in development, I have been asked many times: why? The answer is simple. I am doing it for the boys. The more involved I became working with new initiatives and programs for students, the more I understood the importance of work done in this office. These exciting new programs depend upon funding from alumni, parents, and friends of Avon. We aim to be the very best school for boys, and your continued support is critical to those efforts. Tuition dollars cover only 70 percent of our operating costs. Many students rely on financial aid and scholarships for the opportunity to attend Avon. Your gifts, no matter the size, make a difference in the lives of our students and the future of Avon Old Farms School. Thank you for your support.

Annual Giving

Annual fundraising represents the lifeblood of an independent school, supporting every aspect of its mission and operation. At Avon Old Farms, fundraising supports the essential investments we make in our curriculum and faculty as well as other important operating expenses.

Gifts made annually to support Avon have a profound impact on the school, creating a source of strength in our ability to bring the Avon mission to life. Thank you to this very special group of donors and believers for investing in Avon’s most important fundraising priority: the Annual Fund.

Academic Innovation:

INTERSESSION

Avon pilots a new program allowing faculty and students to explore shared interests through accelerated, hands-on courses.

I

n the 2015–2016 academic year, Avon Old Farms launched Intersession, a new and exciting program designed to give students the chance to engage in hands-on, experiential learning. Students had the opportunity to choose from a plethora of courses specifically constructed to reflect the passion and interest of our faculty. Art Custer, a cherished member of the Avon Old Farms community and dean of curriculum and instruction, spearheaded this initiative. In his blog, From the Clark Room, Custer illustrated that his vision and purpose for creating Intersession is “to broaden the curriculum while creating opportunities for excursions, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary work. Beyond that, we hope that the experience during Intersession will influence how students and faculty approach work in the traditional curriculum.”

As a school that honors tradition and the pursuit of knowledge, Avon Old Farms continues to create opportunities for students to grow. Custer’s motivations for establishing Intersession are directly linked to the educational sentiments of our founder. Mrs. Riddle envisioned students having the opportunity to work alongside faculty mentors, creating a sense of community, and exploring different types of education on a personal level. She said, “Craft work is an important part of the younger boy’s daily occupation, as educators are now fully aware of the importance of handwork in the development of the brain. This field of endeavor is provided at Avon for its educational value only.” Mrs. Riddle’s legacy will continue to help us strive to be the best school for boys while holding true to our traditions. During Intersession, we offered 30 courses with varied and distinct areas of study to allow students to choose courses based on their passion, curiosity, and interest. Subjects included astronomy, beekeeping, baseball bat making, fly-fishing, photography, aviation, and computer programming, to name a few. Because learning often occurs outside classroom walls, participants in many courses traveled off campus. To expose students to different environments and architecture, those in the Photography or the Art of the Selfie class explored the Connecticut shore and New York City. Students in the Understanding Personal Finance and Investment course visited Goldman Sachs in Manhattan, touring the trading floor and receiving details on how to apply for summer internships. Jonathan Crocker, director of college counseling and the lead instructor of The Night Sky course, offered a completely different experience. Students enrolled in The Night Sky, which met in the middle of the night, took telescopes to Ryan Field and Colebrook, Conn., examining constellations and planets. Crocker states, “I think the course was successful because many of the boys had never lived where they could see the night sky well. Once they went out a few times, their curiosity grew, and they looked for things to see on their own.” Throughout the week, there was a distinct buzz around campus, and hearing students sharing their excitement was common. Piloting a new program such as Intersession is possible only through the support of parents and alumni. Avon Old Farms will continue striving to offer programs and courses that enrich our students. Intersession was incredibly successful, and the program will continue to grow for years to come. • • •

“As I age, I have more time to reflect on the things that have most influenced my life. At Avon, I learned about leadership (dorm monitor, judge), self-reliance (Nimrod Club), the value of teamwork (varsity soccer), and the joys of hard physical work (Sugarbush). I believe that there is a strong need for a boys’ school, and Avon has excelled in maintaining its place in that segment of private education. Avon gave me a great deal and continued to reveal its rewards even after so many years.” — Joseph R. Thompson ’58

BREAKING NEW ICE:

Rink Renovations

The future exterior renovation will close the passageway between Brown Student Center and the rink, reflecting the architecture of the campus.

An inside look at the rise of Avon’s hockey program from humble beginnings to greatness

T

he Avon Old Farms hockey program fields one of the nation’s premier secondary school teams. Fifty-five years ago, the first hockey team brandished the crimson and the navy; each year since, the program has grown tremendously, embodying the school motto: aspirando et perseverando. For students at Avon Old Farms, the hockey program becomes a highlight during the long, cold, New England winter. When the Winged Beavers take the ice, players, fans, alumni, parents, and friends of the school become one, celebrating the victories, mourning the losses, and showing unwavering support throughout the season. During these frigid months, players and students truly realize they are part of something bigger, that during decades of tradition previous Avonians banded together and created a foundation for brotherhood as it exists today. 22

Avon Old Farms School

It is important to remember that the hockey program stems from humble origins. Under Headmaster Donald Pierpont, bands of students showed enthusiasm for the sport, which grabbed the attention of the school’s first hockey coach, James Kilgour. To support the newest team wearing the crimson and navy, an empty parking lot, a garden hose, and a diligent smoothing of the ice formed the outdoor rink where the team played. Despite bad weather that often caused the cancellation of practices and games, the tenacity of the team and the brotherhood did not waver. Beloved Headmaster George Trautman was appointed in 1969, and under his leadership, Avon Old Farms began taking steps to assume athletic dominance in New England, and hockey became a key focus. Within the year, Evan Jennings, a board

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS Avon Old Farms places a priority on maintaining the campus and improving the student and faculty experience. Each improvement, even on a small scale, makes a difference in preserving the legacy of our founder, Theodate Pope Riddle. The following list details some of the renovations and improvements made this year, which were possible because of your support. Locker rooms for Avon players and visiting teams will be renovated.

member, donated the money to build an indoor hockey rink. The new rink, aptly named after Jennings, launched Avon’s superiority throughout the league. By 1972, the rink was completed. Three years later, Headmaster Trautman recruited John Gardner to teach and coach at Avon Old Farms. Coach Gardner understood the independent school world, and his résumé included significant hockey achievements. Between Jennings Fairchild Rink and Coach Gardner, along with the fortitude of those who had come before, the hockey program began to thrive. In 1989, Richard Gordon P’90, who served on the Board of Directors and owned the Hartford Whalers, renovated the Avon Old Farms hockey rink. He religiously brought the Whalers to Avon Old Farms to practice. Furthermore, NHL players, including legend Wayne Gretzky, visited Avon Old Farms to practice on the ice. The rest is history. Avon Old Farms emerged as the best secondary school hockey program in New England and arguably in the United States. Today, it has more Founders League titles than and twice as many New England Championships as any other independent school in New England, and Avon is home to many of the world’s finest players. Alumni Brian Leech ’86 and Jonathan Quick ’05 are two of the four Americans in the history of the National

Hockey League to have won the Conn Smyth Trophy, which is awarded to the Most Valuable Player in the Stanley Cup Finals. Three Avonians have raised the Stanley Cup in victory: Leech (New York Rangers), Quick (Los Angeles Kings), and this past June, Nick Bonino ’07 (Pittsburgh Penguins). Undoubtedly, the accolades will continue for years to come. The Avon Old Farms hockey program not only produces winning teams and professional players but also graduates young men who excel as student-athletes at the collegiate level. The success of the hockey team embodies Avon’s school spirit, as we remember the team’s modest beginnings. The hockey program’s achievements are truly remarkable. Unquestionably, visionary coaching, talented players, enthusiastic fans, community outreach, and key donor funding helped the hockey program reach its impressive levels; this magic elixir will spur on the Winged Beavers and help the program continue to flourish. In the near future, Avon Old Farms will invest in the hockey program by modernizing the facility. Enhancements aim to mirror the caliber of the facility with the caliber and success of the program. Under the leadership of the current headmaster, Kenneth LaRocque, the Board of Directors, and committed donors, the future of hockey looks brighter and brighter.

“As a young boy, I remember my interview with Frank Levitt in 1985. At the time he mentioned that AOF would become an important chapter in my life; I just didn’t know how right he was! I was excited to have an opportunity to attend, but even more so, today I am excited that both of my boys will have the same opportunity. Looking at the campus, many would say that AOF has changed over the years, but… the AOF brotherhood never changes. My boys are now part of this community and no matter the path they choose, I am confident they will have the tools to succeed.” —Peter Deckers ’90 P’18, ’20

Giving Spotlight:

JOHN WENDLER ’68

Providing a life changing opportunity for a future Avon boy.

W

hen Theodate Pope Riddle built her indestructible school for boys, she intended that it would nurture the best and brightest, generations of boys who would learn to aspire and persevere in all aspects of life. She sought thoughtful, open discussion for her students. She wished them to shoulder their academic and community responsibilities and actively supported the welfare and progress of all boys at Avon.

Like her sturdy walls, such lessons are the very foundation of Avon Old Farms School. The best and brightest come from every walk of life, and Avon sometimes offers financial support to those

students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend. This support is extended to students who fit the definition of Avon boys: qualified and capable scholars, athletes, artists, and community servants who have the enthusiasm for and interest in being at Old Farms. Recipients point to the opportunity as a true game changer. John Wendler ’68 was that student, one who needed financial support to enroll at Avon, support made possible by the J. Aron Charitable Foundation. He flourished under the guiding influence of Mrs. Riddle’s school. Through sports every season, a rigorous academic program, and activities outside the classroom, a young, somewhat undirected, but promising boy became a focused, more driven, more confident young man with a much clearer sense of what he wanted to do in life. It’s the people at Avon. It’s the way they get to know the boys— in the classrooms, on the fields, and throughout the very full days, virtually 24/7. Wendler credits his Avon family— Headmaster Pierpont, Mr. Clark, the Consuegras, and the Krons—as the encouragement he needed to get involved and take

Wendler, like so many boys before and after him, developed confidence in his abilities outside the classroom and a belief that he could hold his own with anyone and at he highest level. He never forgot what that meant to him.

on leadership positions at Avon. He, like so many boys before and after him, developed confidence in his abilities outside the classroom and a belief that he could hold his own with anyone and at the highest level. He never forgot what that meant to him. When Wendler visited campus for his 40th reunion, he was especially impressed with Avon’s progress: the quality of its academic and athletic programs, its focus on music and art, all the new facilities that had been added, and the preservation of tradition while becoming a modern educational institution. His confidence in Avon, and the education he received here, shaped his decision to make a significant gift to the school. He decided to include a $1,000,000 bequest in his estate for Avon’s endowment, specifically to support an academic achiever whose

circumstances would preclude him from attending Avon without such a scholarship. Avon carefully oversees endowment investments so that contributions will generate income forever, income that is a critical element in supporting a dynamic student population. The larger the endowment grows, the more opportunities we can offer students such as the young John Wendler. Wendler talks fondly about Avon as the most influential experience in his development, in addition to his parents and family, and key to whatever success he achieved after Avon. “It changed my life, and I wanted to provide that same kind of opportunity for a qualified and deserving boy in the same way that the J. Aron Charitable Foundation did for me.”

RiddlSociety

The

Avon honors benefactors who have created trusts, bequests, and other planned gifts for Avon Old Farms by recognizing them as members of the Riddle Society. We are proud to recognize the following individuals who have made plans in their estates to make a difference for Avon Old Farms School over the long term. These deferred gifts to Avon Old Farms include bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, life insurance, real estate, and collectibles. By building our endowment through planned gifts, we can offer more financial aid to deserving students, provide better compensation to our faculty, maintain the beauty of Mrs. Riddle’s magnificent campus, and enhance the academic, athletic, and arts programs. Currently, more than 175 alumni, parents, and friends of the school who have either openly or anonymously made their planned gifts intentions known to the school. We welcome you to follow their lead and join the Riddle Society. By planning ahead, they have not only become part of the pipeline for the future advancement of Avon but have also provided for their loved ones by reducing the exposure to local, state, and federal taxes. If you are about to construct your first estate plan or plan to update your estate when the circumstances of your life change, please think about Avon Old Farms School, where graduates, sons, and grandsons become men and make friends for life. For more information about planned gifts for Avon Old Farms Schools, please contact Robin Delnicki, associate director of development, at 860-404-4156, delnickir@avonoldfarms.com, or visit our planned giving website online: www.avonoldfarms.com/gift-planning.org/

F ROM T H E CH A I R M A N OF T H E BOA R D

Dear Avonians, I’m pleased to report that the fiscal year ending June 2016 was once again conducted with great care and attention to the fiscal operations of Avon Old Farms School. As chairman of the school’s Board of Directors, I, as well as the board, continue to focus on supporting Avon’s mission. We oversee a conservative budgeting process that supports a balanced budget for the school while focusing on enhancing our endowment. This year, we have maintained positive operating financial results that help our school aspire and persevere. Fulfilling our mission requires significant investment in our faculty and students. Avon must balance this commitment and customary school expenses with income generated from tuition, annual fundraising, and the endowment. The 2015–2016 budget was balanced through the smart work of our admissions staff, prudent management of the school’s investments, and the exceptional support of our donor community. In the last year, our financial practices have enabled us to make critical investments in our people and programs. These investments support the school’s commitment to our core values of brotherhood, integrity, scholarship, and sportsmanship. We greatly value your support. On behalf of our boys, the school’s administration and faculty, and the Board of Directors, I thank you for making Avon a priority.
