FROM THE EDITOR… Greetings! I hope this issue finds you happy and well-rested after an enjoyable summer. Though our students were gone, campus was busy as ever, with many summer camps in session, maintenance projects underway, and final numbers crunched on the 2016-2017 Annual Report. Over the next pages, you’ll see the results of your generosity in a hybrid issue featuring the Annual Report as well as much of the usual summer content you used to receive in The Village Green, including coverage of many of the exciting events at the end of the school year, such as Commencement and Reunion. Please feel free to let us know how you feel about this new format—and stay tuned for your next issue of the Avonian, in mailboxes this November. And to those young men joining us this September: we can’t wait to welcome you back to start the 2017-2018 school year. Aspirando et perseverando, Morgan C. dear friends, This newest issue of the Avonian combines two former publications, the Village Green and the Annual Report. In combining the two publications into one, we hope to share with you the highlights of the spring term at Avon Old Farms as well as the story of our generous alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who contributed to Avon Old Farms School during the 2016-17 school year. I am proud to announce that we exceeded by over a half a million dollars the fundraising record we set last year! These funds will be thoughtfully used to support our operations as well as our strategic goals, and will dramatically impact our ability to provide our young men with exceptional educational opportunities. Our strong and burgeoning culture of giving is testimony to the loyalty we inspire within the Avon community because of the transformational experiences students receive here. Your gifts signify how deeply you believe in Avon’s mission and how clearly you recognize the powerfully enduring ways in which we impact our students. Thank you very much for your substantial and continuing support of our school. Jim Detora, our director of development and external affairs, effectively led our development team as they worked with our school family to accomplish the lofty goals set by our Board of Directors. Congratulations to Jim and his entire team, including Bill Austin’92, the chair of our Board’s development committee! We enjoyed 100% participation in annual giving from our board of directors and our faculty again this year, and sincerely appreciated the gifts that we received from so many alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. Our students and faculty strive daily in their endeavors in order to be worthy of your support. Certainly, the past school year was exceptional from any perspective. From the noteworthy accomplishments of our scholars, highlighted by the impressive list of colleges to which members of the Class of 2017 will matriculate in September; to the success of our athletes who

won league championships in four sports, including basketball, squash, lacrosse, and baseball; to the impressive list of regional and national honors captured by students in our performing and visual arts program; to the impressive achievements of our students in our community service initiatives, the 2016-17 school year will be a proud chapter in our school history. Avon Old Farms is honoring tradition and inspiring excellence by challenging our students to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives. In closing and on behalf of our faculty and students, I again thank you for helping us to fulfill our mission by supporting us, advocating for us, and believing in us. As we look to the future with high ambitions, we recognize that we are going to require your continued allegiance and loyalty in order to achieve our goals. I look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

The Avonian Summer 2017

Sunday, May 28, 2017, was an emotional day. Many time-honored traditions carried on: the academic procession was led by the faculty; current students followed; and finally, preceded by the Manchester Pipe Band, the seniors processed in.

H

eadmaster Kenneth LaRocque shared an invocation prayer, and talented members of various singing groups on campus performed a moving tribute to the Armed Services. This year, Rece Davis P’15, sports television journalist, anchor on SportsCenter, and host of various programs on ESPN, was Avon’s commencement speaker. In his address, Davis shared with the Men of Avon many lessons he has learned in his career. He advised not just standing by and waiting for things to happen, but to aspire and persevere, and take an active role.

After the commencement address, Headmaster LaRocque handed out some of Avon’s most prestigious awards, including the Scholar of Distinction, the 12th Grade Prize for Academic Excellence, the Award for Earnest and Persistent Effort, the Award for Outstanding Improvement in the Academic Area, the George A. Murray Cup, the Student Council Spirit Award, Founder’s Medals, the Order of Old Farms, and the F. Reed Estabrook Jr. ’36 Award. This year’s Cashion Faculty Award went to English Department Chair Trevor Stern. After the awards, it was time: Assistant Headmaster John Gardner took the podium for the presentation of diplomas,

which were handed out by Chairman of the Board of Directors Martin Cole H’16, P’04. When Scott Andrew Ziegler took his final steps across the stage, and the singing of “Men of Avon” was completed, graduation caps were flung triumphantly into the air. The Class of 2017 made its way through Alumni Gate, leaving behind one chapter and turning the page to the next—as alumni.

Family and friends met their new graduates in the quadrangle to continue the celebration before heading to Riddle Refectory for a delectable buffet of sandwiches and pastries prepared by our talented dining services team. Commencement Weekend also featured the Commencement Concert and the Senior Awards Ceremony.

dear avonians, Thank you for making my first year as director such a rewarding experience. The teacher definitely became the student this year. With all my years spent on the Avon campus in my wide variety of roles, I can honestly tell you that this year opened my eyes to a new view of the school. It meant long hours of homework as I became familiar with the demands of providing the financial security necessary to allow Avon Old Farms School to thrive and continue to meet our mission. It has been gratifying to see the support from so many of you who feel as deeply about this school and its mission as I do.

Thanks to your generous support, we have continued to make progress. A few highlights include: The new Ordway Art Gallery Enhanced engineering courses Increased funds available for financial aid and scholarships Repurposing our Water Tower into the Volk Family Computer Lab Being a part of that process which brings funding to projects and programs which give us the ability to broaden and enrich the experience of our students makes all the work my staff and I do worth it. As we take the time to appreciate the many ways we have made positive change, we dedicate ourselves to the work

needed to make sure that progress continues. Even with all our accomplishments this year, my focus remains on what lies ahead. No matter how many projects and programs come to fruition, the challenge to set the framework for the future does not diminish; it only grows as we realize the potential of what could be the future of Avon. I promise you that I will be relentless in my work and in guiding the work of my staff. What I ask of you is that you continue to support Avon as you have in the past, and to dig deeper. Our school is strong and vibrant, but it will take all of us moving in the same direction to ensure it continues to thrive. It is a mission I am committed to, and I thank you for supporting Avon in such an impactful and meaningful way.Â

reunion Reunion Weekend 2017 was highlighted by many beloved traditions, but also featured some new adventures for our returning alumni. Here’s a rundown of all of the weekend’s events.

F

riday, May 12, a few alumni returned to campus bright and early at 7:30 a.m. to start the day fresh with their host students. Alumni met their hosts before the start of morning meeting and continued to shadow them throughout the first half of the day. They went to classes, spent free periods at the Cherouney Hawk’s Nest, and enjoyed a meal with current students in the Riddle refectory. There’s nothing like attending classes with your old teachers to get you into the reunion mindset! Simultaneously, the annual Reunion Golf Scramble was teeing off down the road at Farmington Woods Golf Course. Many more alumni began to arrive on campus Friday afternoon in preparation for class dinners being held that evening. The Class of 1967 celebrated its 50th reunion, beginning with cocktails at the Headmaster’s House, followed

by a dinner in the Commons. The Class of 1992 celebrated its 25th reunion across the way, sharing a meal with members of the Class of 1972 at the Nimrod Pavilion overlooking Beaver Pond. Saturday morning began early with the annual Fishing and Flapjacks event at Nimrod Cabin, with homemade blueberry pancakes cooked on the grill. An hour later, the larger Reunion Breakfast took place in the refectory. Saturday’s schedule was packed. Alumni went from the Alumni Memorial Service in the Chapel to a gathering for the Alumni Parade, and on to the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. One individual and three teams and were inducted: Nick Bonino ’07, the 1986-87 Varsity Wrestling Team, the 1991-92 Varsity Football Team, and the 1996-97 Varsity Baseball Team. Bonino was unable to attend the event due to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ (triumphant!) fight for the Stanley Cup, but sent warm regards and

weekend well wishes to the three teams being honored alongside him. That afternoon, rain cancelled the alumni lacrosse game, but a livestream of the varsity lacrosse game was available for viewing in the auditorium. The Saturday evening events included another cocktail hour, an all-reunion photograph, and a mix-and-

mingle dinner in the refectory. It was a weekend well spent by the many Men of Avon in attendance, renewed by the spirit of the brotherhood. We look forward to seeing many more of our alumni at Reunion again next spring!

2017 inductees

Every other year, Avon Old Farms selects a few elite teams and athletes from our past to be honored and recognized during Alumni Reunion Weekend. The Hall of Fame Ceremony was held in the Brown Auditorium on Saturday, May 13, and was attended by alumni, students, faculty, and friends of the school. This year, three teams and one individual were inducted into the Avon Old Farms School Athletic Hall of Fame: NICK BONINO, ’07:

Captain of Avon’s 2007 championship hockey team, member of National Hockey League’s Nashville Predators team; two-time Stanley Cup champion (with Pittsburgh Penguins)

1996 -1997 VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM: 19-0,

1991-1992 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM:

1986 -1987 VARSITY WRESTLING TEAM:

winners of the Colonial League Championship and the Founders League Championship; only undefeated baseball team in school history

8-0, Erickson League Champions

12-0, winner of the Western New England Independent School Wrestling Association (WNEISWA) Championship

(above and right) played varsity hockey at Avon Old Farms under legendary Coach John Gardner. In his senior year, Bonino was a captain and a force on a New England championship-winning team. After Avon, Nick went on to play for Boston University (BU), where he was again a difference maker, leading his team to an NCAA national championship. During the championship game versus Miami University, Nick produced an assist and a goal in the final minute of regulation play, making the impossible possible, and leading to a dramatic come-

from-behind victory for BU. A similar story continues with Nick’s professional career in the National Hockey League. Nick competed impressively for the Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016. It was there that he provided the catalyst on an offensive line that drove the Penguins to the playoffs and ultimately not one but two coveted Stanley Cups, in both 2016 and 2017. In typical Bonino fashion, after each triumphant victory, he remembered his roots: when it was his turn to have a day with the infamous Cup, he brought it to Avon Old Farms to celebrate with his community.

THE 1997 VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM (above) enjoyed rare success. Finishing with a record of 19-0, this team is the only undefeated team in the storied history of Avon baseball. Brilliant pitching (three future Division I pitchers at the collegiate level), a powerful offensive punch stretching through the batting order (.300 and .400 clutch hitters from top to bottom), and a staunch defense (outstanding and deep in all positions) combined to make the difference in the memorable spring of 1997. In the process of winning every game, this quintessential team captured the Colonial League and Founders League titles while setting the bar of excellence for all future baseball teams at Avon Old Farms.

Coach Kevin Driscoll ’72, P’08 addresses the crowd at this year’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

THE 1991 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM (above) set many standards of excellence that remain cornerstones of the Avon Old Farms winning tradition. Led by two very strong captains, Bill Austin ’92 and Ryan Hankard ’92, this group of Winged Beavers played like a team on a mission for every game by outrunning, outmaneuvering, and outplaying the top prep schools in New England. Many members of this team were part of a 19-game winning streak, after completing the prior season with an unblemished record. These young men came to Avon Old Farms not only wanting to win a lot of football games and the Erickson League Championship, but also to leave their perfect mark on a flourishing program. Like the classes and teams before them, this team laid the bricks and mortar that have won the Avon Old Farms football program the respect, admiration, and national recognition as one of the top prep school teams in the United States.

THE 1987 VARSITY WRESTLING TEAM (above) accomplished what no other wrestling team had done in the history of wrestling at Avon Old Farms. Led by Captains Randy Peck ’87 (16-0) and Bruce Suggs ’87 (12-4), the team went undefeated in its dual meets and captured the WNEISWA. State Championship. This wrestling season was one to remember. One of the many memorable moments came against a formidable Hotchkiss squad that had spoiled the previous perfect season with a 27-27 tie. Revenge was sweet as the Winged Beavers crushed Hotchkiss with a 51-10 victory. Coach Steven Skwara, his staff, and the entire team of wrestlers set the bar for hard work, tradition, superior performance and the character values instilled in all of our athletes and teams across the board. The induction of this undefeated 1987 wrestling team reminds us that dedication to our core values and hard work are key ingredients to a successful team.

spring sports recap

The spring season is a short one, but 2017 did not disappoint. On the tennis court, around the track, on the lacrosse field, and on the baseball diamond, our teams aspired and persevered, bringing home many victories and several honors.

Lacrosse

This year’s varsity lacrosse team had some big wins, finishing the season with a record of 12-2. Seniors Ryan Lanchbury and Raines Shamburger were named Under Armour All-Americans and played in the nationally televised 12th Annual Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Games on Saturday, July 1, at Towson University. Lanchbury played attack for the North, while his AOF roommate Shamburger played defense for the South—putting them head to head.

Tennis

Baseball The 2017 varsity baseball team finished with an overall record of 16-4, winning the Founders League with a perfect 8-0 record and finishing one game behind Loomis Chaffee in the Colonial League with a record of 11-3. Golf The Avon Old Farms varsity golf team posted a regular season record of 16 wins and five losses. Many of these matches were extremely close, and a few were even decided by a tie-breaker. Many of the players on this year’s varsity team earned medalist honors in several matches. Five students represented Avon in the Kingswood Invitational Tournament (New England Championship) on May 24. The team finished in the top 10 out of 23 teams.

24

Summer 2017 The Avonian

The varsity tennis team enjoyed a record of 10-6 this season, led by five determined returning players and co-captains. They won all of their close 4-3 matches and suffered not a single disappointing loss as they competed well against our toughest opponents—five of which made it to the Elite 8 postseason tournament— and made them earn their wins. In each AOF victory, someone on the team stepped up and played above and beyond his everyday ability.

Track & Field The 2017 track and field team finished with a regular season record of 4-6. After some early season losses, the team rallied to beat talented Williston and Suffield squads. In its final regular season meets, the team had 32 personal bests. As the championship season wrapped up, several athletes emerged as All Founders or All New England scorers. The team finished sixth in the Founders League and eighth in the New England Prep School Track Association Championships.

“It is funny how, as we age, you see your life experiences differently. As I look back at my Old Farms years, the one thing I see as a common theme amongst everyone was a zest and passion for life. My mentors—Sid Clark, Skip Flanagan, Peter Evans, Frank Leavitt, and many more—all had a passion for something that made their life full. Ultimately, my sense is that their true passion was impacting us as young men. To this day, I can still see each one in my mind—I could even walk to their classrooms 40 years later. We must aspire and persevere, but we must be mindful of how we impact others and the legacy we leave on our families and communities as Men of Avon, as we are stewards of the values we learned years ago. This is why I continue to support Avon.” —clayton parsons ’78

“My time at Avon was a formative time in my life that set the foundation for the man I have become. Based on all I received from Avon during my time there, I believe I should give back to Avon so others can enjoy the same experience I did. My gift may not be large, but the more small gifts that Avon gets, the bigger difference Avon can have on its students.” —sam rubenstein ’85

ordway art gallery grand opening

The evolution of the new Ordway Art Gallery, located at the connection of the Beatson Performing Arts Center and the Brown Student Center, took a lot of thought and energy from all sides. The idea was born of the need for a new home for the old Ordway Gallery, previously housed in the Forge and Water Tower on the edge of Avon’s campus. When Headmaster Kenneth LaRocque offered the idea of using the space in between the Brown and the Beatson, Visual Arts Chair Cristina Pinton ran with it. She not only saw the gallery, but also envisioned a dedicated space to honor Gail Laferriere, her predecessor and beloved art teacher at Avon for 42 years. “This building is the hub of campus—we have the student center, the field house, the weight room, the auditorium, music rooms, and more,” shared Headmaster LaRocque during his welcoming remarks. “Now, we have a dedicated space for the visual arts, too. And this is not a space tucked away on the far side of campus—this is a hallway our community walks down every day.”

Filled with an array of creative work by students and alumni, the hallway was not only transformed into a space to hang art, but into a true gallery that captures a visitor’s attention, highlights the emotion in each piece, and brings peace to the soul. The gallery opening had several features: Current student artwork of several media, including painting, photography, woodworking, ceramics, and screen printing The inaugural Alumni Spotlight, featuring four large prints by Rodney Smith ’66, which will be on loan to the school and on display in the gallery for one year Hand-crafted cabinets displaying 3-D art, including a dedicated cabinet sponsored by the class of 1963 Differ Fund, featuring a display about Theodate Pope Riddle and the artifacts used in the creation of Avon Old Farms School Award-winning alumni artwork A dedication ceremony for the space honoring Gail Laferriere, the visual arts chair at Avon for 42 years Current students, faculty, administration, alumni, and members of the local art community all came to celebrate the opening of this valuable space and the tradition of unrivaled talent in our Visual Arts Department.

“I love everything about Avon, but what I love most is how my son’s advisor, teachers, and coaches all support and challenge him to be his best. At Avon, I have always felt that there are so many special people genuinely caring for my son, helping him to do the most with his talents and interests, and inspiring him to discover new ones. That’s the Avon experience, and that’s why my husband and I never fail to support the Annual Fund.” —sarah gardella p’19

The year’s biggest parent-driven initiative was presented on Saturday, April 29. A Taste of New England, a farm-to-table feast, is sponsored each year by the Parents of Avon Association and our many generous sponsors. From incredible sports packages to magnificent art, this year’s live auction was an event to remember, as were the moments enjoyed between alumni, parents, faculty members, and friends. And of course, the exceptional culinary experience was a treat to all invited guests. Proceeds from the Blue Blazer Ball benefit the Student Enrichment Fund.

“Over the years Avon has become part of our family. Our sons attended 30 years ago and their experience led two of our grandsons to attend. We have witnessed our grandsons evolve from energetic boys to mature, disciplined, and well-grounded young gentlemen. The school’s values correlate with our family values. There is no better place to send a young boy as he develops into manhood than Avon. We have always and will always support the school for these reasons.

Wednesday, May 3, was Grandparents Day at Avon Old Farms, a special opportunity for grandparents to enjoy a day with their grandson at Avon Old Farms School. Visitors were treated to classes, a concert, and lunch with their grandsons, as well as the opportunity to catch them in action on the playing fields. This is a time-honored tradition we look forward to each year!

“I returned to teach at Avon Old Farms School after retiring from a law enforcement career because our mission has been constant throughout the years: to help build a ‘good man.’ I have seen these results through my experience as a student; through my son’s personal growth; and through the students with whom I have worked closely. The investment and impact of the faculty and staff—as well as the community—are what make Avon a truly special place of which I am proud to be a part.” —rob whitty ’87, p’16

Avon Old Farms School currently employs many Men of Avon: alumni who returned to

campus as faculty, staff, or administration. Their commitment to their school has been unwavering, and is a testament to the enduring power of the Brotherhood. The tradition of alumni coming back to Avon for work is a long one, and we are fortunate that they are here to share their experience and perspective with the next generations of Avonians. Avon Old Farms School relies on the generosity and support of its many dedicated constituents. Many of our alumni are active supporters of our school’s mission and goals, and over the years have remained steadfast in donating their time and resources to enhance the experience of our community—even spanning across generations of Avonians.

T

he Drew family has been active supporters of Avon for years, giving both time and money to support the school in ways that have advanced our programs and enriched the educational experiences we are able to provide. John Drew, a lifelong resident of Avon, first became a part of the community as a parent: his sons, Chris and David, were members of the Classes of 1986 and 1987, respectively. John served on the Board of Directors for more than 20 years; he is currently serving as an Honorary Board Member. He is a member of the Riddle Society, having left a portion of his estate to Avon Old Farms School.

Chris Drew ’85 served on the National Council at its creation, holding various leadership roles over the years including secretary, vice chairman, and chairman. He recently ended his tenure on the National Council and become a Board Member in 2016. Chris’s children have continued the Avon legacy as members of the Classes of 2017 (Carson) and 2018 (Brian). Carson recently graduated as Avon’s Scholar of Distinction and is headed to Johns Hopkins University this fall, while his brother, Brian, is a rising senior and Dean’s List student poised to make a big impact during his final year at Avon.

Ordway Science and Technology Center (K ANE CHEMISTRY LAB)

Jasper Kane was the stepgrandfather of Christopher Drew ’85 and David Drew ’87 as well as the stepfather of Barbara and stepfather-in-law of John Drew, a longtime Avon Board member. Dr. Kane was a generous benefactor supporting educational programs for aspiring scientists. His contribution to Avon Old Farms School in support of the Ordway Science and Technology Center continues to help young Avonians pursue their interests in chemistry.

The STEM Initiative Endowment The Water Tower was recently transformed into a state-of-the-art computer lab, complete with 14 dual-boot work stations. The newly renovated space will provide a multitude of opportunities to the growing number of engineering and computer science classes and adds to our goal to build and support the programs that our boys want and need as part of their academic

curriculum. In addition to the engineering classes, the space will also be utilized by programmers, the robotics team, digital arts classes, and Club Forge, a newly established club that built its own 3D printer last spring. Chris Drew and his family, along with their Teel’s Marsh Foundation and the Elizabeth Speer Foundation, supported the initiative.

The Drew History Initiative Renamed in 2017 as the Peter M. Evans History Initiative In 2017, the 10th year of the Drew History Initiative culminated with a visit from best-selling author Erik Larson, who discussed his work Dead Wake. The book, a spring break reading assignment for students, chronicles the last crossing of the RMS Lusitania, which was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Ireland by a German U-boat; Theodate Pope Riddle, the founder and architect of Avon Old Farms School, was aboard the ship and was one of the survivors; Dead Wake includes significant telling of the events

Farms students with important and unique opportunities to expand their appreciation of history outside of the classroom, and whereas the Drew Family recognizes the myriad contributions Peter M. Evans has made to Avon Old Farms for 46 years, especially as a master teacher of history for generations of Avonians, and whereas the Drew Family wishes to honor Peter M. Evans’ many years of service and passion for history, let it be known that on this 16th day of May in the year 2017, they have resolved to rename the Drew History Initiative, for all time, as the Peter M. Evans History Initiative.” “The Drew legacy at Avon Old Farms is both impressive and inspiring,” notes Evans. “I was surprised and humbled when

“The Drew legacy at Avon Old Farms is both impressive and inspiring. I was surprised and humbled when the Drews decided to change the name of the Drew Initiative to the Peter M. Evans History Initiative. Looking back, I taught both Chris and David Drew in A.P. U.S. History during my nearly 30 years of teaching. Moreover, I have recently been the advisor to both Carson and Brian Drew, and I have known John and Barbara for the majority of my 47 years at Avon. In conjunction with Larson’s visit, the Drew family was in attendance to surprise longtime beloved faculty member Peter Evans with the renaming of the initiative to the Peter M. Evans History Initiative. To a standing ovation from the crowd, Evans was awarded the following proclamation: “Whereas the Drew History Initiative has provided Avon Old

News and Notes

drew history initiative 2017 In May of 1915, a German U-boat torpedoed the RMS Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. Seven hundred and sixty-seven survived, including Theodate Pope Riddle, architect and founder of Avon Old Farms School. Such was the focus of this year’s annual seminar for history scholars, made possible by the Drew History Initiative. To commemorate the initiative’s 10th year, Erik Larson, best-selling author of Dead Wake, was invited to campus to discuss his work, Mrs. Riddle, and U.S. entry into WWI 100 years ago. The Drew History Initiative seeks to foster students’ intellectual growth and curiosity outside of the normal course schedule by addressing a topic currently in the news and exploring the history related to it. It also provides students with the historical context necessary to understand the current issues. Each year, students attend a series of presentations and the program culminates with a keynote speaker and dinner. This year, the Initiative began with a spring break reading assignment of Erik Larson’s Dead Wake, a New York Times bestseller which chronicles the last crossing of the Lusitania, the events surrounding the sinking, and how it contributed to World War I. Presentations followed beginning in April, including one by Commander William Swanbeck, who captains a Los Angeles class attack submarine out of Groton, the USS Montpelier. Commander Swanbeck spoke to students about the evolution of submarine warfare, tactics, rules of engagement, and what life on a submarine is like today. Next, history teacher Mr. Sweetland discussed the causes of World War I followed by a discussion of Dead Wake and Theodate Pope Riddle led by Avon faculty members Mr. Custer, Mr. Clare, and Mr. Duwan. Finally, on Tuesday, May 16, Mr. Larson arrived on campus for the capstone of the Drew History Initiative. He spoke informally with a group of students about his writing for 45 minutes before attending a small-group dinner. He then

participated in a guided interview focusing on Dead Wake in Brown Auditorium with the whole student body. The Drew History Initiative began in 2007 with the generous support of the Drew family (John E. and Barbara Drew, parents of Christopher S. Drew ’85 and David E. Drew ’87 and grandparents of Carson ’17 and Brian ’18). In conjunction with Larson’s visit, the Drew family surprised longtime faculty member Dean Peter Evans with the announcement that the Drew History Initiative would be renamed the Peter M. Evans History Initiative: “Whereas the Drew History Initiative has provided Avon Old Farms students with important and unique opportunities to expand their appreciation of history outside of the classroom, and whereas the Drew Family recognizes the myriad contributions Peter M. Evans has made to Avon Old Farms for 46 years, especially as a master teacher of history for generations of Avonians, and whereas the Drew Family wishes to honor Peter M. Evans’ many years of service and passion for history, let it be known that on this 16th day of May in the year 2017, they have resolved to rename the Drew History Initiative, for all time as: The Peter M. Evans History Initiative.” The Avon Old Farms community is grateful to the Drew family for providing this tremendous opportunity for academic enrichment, and to the many faculty members and student historians whose passion fueled the successful project. dear members of our

avon family I’m pleased to report that our fiscal year ending June 2017 was conducted with proper discipline and attention to our school’s fiscal operations. As the Chairman of the school’s Board of Directors, I, as well as the Board, continue to focus our efforts on supporting Avon’s mission. We oversee a conservative budgeting process that supports a balanced budget for the school while focusing on enhancing our endowment. This year, we have maintained positive operating financial results that help our school aspire and persevere. Fulfilling our mission requires significant investment in our faculty and students. Avon must balance this commitment and customary school expenses with income generated from tuition, annual fundraising, and the endowment. The 2016-2017 budget was balanced through the smart work of our admissions staff, prudent management of the school’s operations, appropriate management of our endowment and investments, and the exceptional support of our donor community. Over the last year, we continued to make investments in our people and programs. These investments support the school’s commitment to our core values of Brotherhood, Integrity, Scholarship, and Sportsmanship. Your partnership is valued greatly. On behalf of our boys, the school’s administration and faculty, and the Board of Directors, we thank you for making Avon a priority.

“Often our most effective teaching takes place beyond the classroom. And while it is gratifying to see boys succeed in their studies or on the athletic field, I’m even more gratified by those who succeed in life.” —george m. trautman ’98h, p’75, ’81, ’82, gp’03 Headmaster 1969-1998
