We hope this issue finds you happy, healthy, and well-rested after an enjoyable summer. Though the students were gone, campus was as busy as ever, with many summer camps in session, maintenance projects underway, and final numbers crunched on the 2017–2018 Annual Report. Over the next pages, you’ll see the results of your generosity, and look back at the eventful spring season—including the return of many alumni at this year’s Reunion Weekend, and our farewell to the Class of 2018 at the 85th Commencement Exercises. Your support for Avon Old Farms keeps us going and keeps us great— and we are becoming even greater. Thank you to everyone who believes in our mission and supports our community. We’re ready to start another extraordinary year and can’t wait to get back into the classrooms and studios (and onto the fields and stages, too). See you soon! Aspirando et perseverando, Morgan C. Dear Friends, The summer issue of the Avonian helps bring to life many of the exciting events we enjoyed on campus over the course of the spring. It also includes the Annual Report for the 2017–2018 year, which tells the story of the many generous alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of Avon Old Farms School who joined together to contribute an unprecedented sum of money. I am proud to announce that we enjoyed a record year in terms of the amount of unrestricted and total dollars we realized, and I sincerely thank every member of the school family who played a part in this accomplishment. From the Pushups for Patriots and the Blue Blazer Ball to Grandparents Day, Alumni Weekend, and Commencement, this spring was filled with the spirit of tradition that makes Avon Old Farms such a unique and special community. Students, faculty, administration, and staff joined together numerous times to successfully host hundreds of visitors to campus. Highlights of the spring term included honoring John Garvey ’78, a rocket scientist, and Colonel James Hayes ’88, a soldier and patriot, with Distinguished Alumni awards. From Saturday afternoon, April 7, and continuing for 24 hours, Major John Bourgault ’80 and Jim Detora led a host of students, faculty, staff, and other members of our school family in our 10th annual Pushups for Patriots initiative. We raised well over $30,000 for the Semper Fi Fund to support wounded US Marines and their families. On April 30, the Parents of Avon hosted the annual Blue Blazer Ball, which raised a record amount of money to benefit the Student Enrichment Fund. On May 2, we welcomed hundreds of grandparents to campus to visit their grandsons’ classes and watch them perform in a concert and compete in athletic contests. Peter and Sue Evans retired this spring after 47 years of

selfless service to our students and school, and we honored them in numerous ways, including naming the alumni and development building for them. Skip Flanagan also retired after more than 50 years of service to independent schools, which included 27 years as the headmaster at Western Reserve Academy and 19 years at Avon Old Farms. Kevin Driscoll was honored this spring for completing 40 years as a member of our faculty. On Sunday morning, May 29, Peter Evans delivered the Commencement address to the members of the Class of 2018 and their guests. For the first time since 2001, graduation ceremonies were held indoors, in the fieldhouse. The festiveities were an appropriate ending to an extremely successful year at Avon Old Farms, and the 2017–2018 school year will long be remembered as an important chapter in Avon’s history. In closing, I again thank you for helping us fulfill our mission by supporting us, advocating for us, and believing in us. As we look to the future with high ambitions for Avon Old Farms, we recognize how critical your continued allegiance and loyalty will be in achieving our goals.

The 85th Commencement Exercises

This year’s Commencement Exercises—the 85th at Avon Old Farms School—were held inside for the first time since 2001, but not even the rain could dampen the mood as the 129 members of the Class of 2018 processed through Alumni Gate and on to the next chapters of their promising young lives. Even inside, many time-honored traditions were carried on: the faculty led the academic procession; current students followed; and, finally, the seniors processed in, preceded by the Manchester Pipe Band. Headmaster Kenneth H. LaRocque shared an invocation prayer, and talented members of various singing groups on campus performed a moving tribute to the Armed Services. Peter Evans, a beloved member of the Avon community for 47 years who retired this year, was Avon’s Commencement speaker. In his address, Mr. Evans spoke of embracing change, and encouraged students to always keep the school motto, aspirando et perseverando, close at heart: embrace change, dream big, don’t give up, and if you do fall, fall forward. After the commencement address, Headmaster LaRocque presented some of Avon’s most prestigious awards, including the

Scholar of Distinction, the 12th Grade Prize for Academic Excellence, the Award for Earnest and Persistent Effort, the Award for Outstanding Improvement in the Academic Area, the George A. Murray Cup, the Student Council Spirit Award, Founder’s Medals, the Order of Old Farms, and the F. Reed Estabrook Jr. ’36 Award. This year’s Cashion Faculty Award went to Dr. Diana Malchoff, and the Fanning Faculty Award went to Joe Martinez. Then it was time: Assistant Headmaster John T. Gardner took the podium for the presentation of diplomas, which Martin I. Cole H’16, P’04, chairman of the Board of Directors, handed out. Caps were tossed, and the newest Men of Avon recessed outside into the rain and through Alumni Gate to waiting friends and family. Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

L E T T E R O F G R AT I T U D E F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R O F D E V E L O P M E N T

Dear Avonians, Thank you for all your support this year. My second year has been one of the most fulfilling of my career here at Avon. At times, the challenges appeared insurmountable, but we ended on the upside of each of our financial goals. It was a team effort, and we embraced our motto, aspirando et perseverando, right up until the end of June. The Avon community heard our message and answered the call in an unprecedented manner.

On

a personal note, I continued to travel around the country and even “across the pond” to visit with as many alumni as possible. The opportunities I have to speak with alumni, families, and friends of Avon are the most energizing and satisfying parts of what I do. Avon is a special place because of you. We are so very grateful for those of you who consistently support Avon. Your effort is vital to sustaining the school’s financial well-being. At the same time, we send a heartfelt thank you to those of you who were first-time donors this year. Please continue your efforts on our behalf in the years to come. I promise we will be worthy stewards of your gifts by putting them to the best use possible. We have two significant projects taking place which will change the look and feel of two of our revered campus gathering places. The refectory and servery project, and the hockey rink project will bring a fresh face to buildings that have great significance to our boys. We look forward to welcoming you to campus this fall so you can see for yourself that the way your dollars are put to work has a palpable impact on our community.

As you consider other reasons to make sure you get to campus during the year ahead, please join us to honor Ken LaRocque. He has provided a generation of strong and focused leadership, which we want to make sure is fully recognized and celebrated before he begins his retirement in June 2019. Speaking of recognition, I am very proud to enter the Evans Alumni and Development Office each day and think about all that the sign represents. Along with Ken, Peter and Sue Evans were great people to have on my team as we tackled the work we needed to accomplish. As I look back and look forward in the same glance, it feels imperative that I draw on the strength and wisdom of our past for us to meet the challenges ahead. I have shared with my staff many times over the last few months that the upcoming year will “be a year like never before.” With your support, I know we will build on all we have accomplished over the last two years to meet the lofty goals necessary to make Avon the best school for boys. For me, it is just too important a goal not to achieve. Join my staff and me in safeguarding and supporting our mission. I thank you for your generosity this year and look to your continued support moving forward.

Aspirando et Perseverando

Reunion Weekend 2018 This spring, more than 190 alumni and their families, from 42 different graduation classes, traveled from near and far to reconnect with each other at the 2018 Reunion Weekend held at Avon Old Farms.

Summer 2018 The Avonian

The weekend was full of celebrations, starting with the Class of 1968—the last class to graduate in the Pierpont era—celebrating its 50th reunion. Saturday started bright and early with the always-popular fishing and flapjacks event out at the Nimrod Cabin and Beaver Pond, followed by the moving memorial service in the Chapel, the Reunion Parade, and the presentation of the Distinguished Alumnus Awards. Before Saturday’s varsity lacrosse game, Coach Skip Flanagan, who retired at the conclusion of this school year, was presented with a proclamation naming him head coach emeritus, an honor made even sweeter as the team clinched a 6-3 victory over Deerfield. More awards rounded out Saturday evening, with heartfelt tributes to Peter and Sue Evans as they wrapped up their 47 years on campus. Overall, it was a weekend filled with many great memories that move us with strength and determination into Avon’s bright future.

The 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award Ceremony

On Saturday, May 12, 2018, as part of the annual reunion activities, two Avonians were honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award: John M. Garvey ’78 and Colonel James “Jamie” E. Hayes III ’88. This year, the ceremony also featured the official naming of the Evans Alumni and Development Office, in honor and celebration of Peter and Sue Evans, who retired this year after many years of service to the school. Caption here about Evans award, and/or family members pictured.

parents, and friends of Avon of Avon Old Farms School, and in consultation with the headmaster. The award is given every other year. JOHN M. GARVEY ’78 came to Avon as a scholarship student from Plainville, Conn. He played football and baseball, captained the wrestling team, was the lead editor of the school newspaper, and rose to the position of vice warden. John matriculated at Harvard University to study economics and, following his passion for the Apollo moon missions, continued to RCA Astro Electronics in New Jersey to build satellites. In 1983, he enrolled at Boston University, where he earned an MS in electrical engineering.

rugby. After West Point, Jamie completed infantry officer training and Ranger School and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. Serving as an airborne infantry platoon leader, he participated in numerous training and contingency operations. In 1998, Jamie completed the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course. He later earned his Green Beret as an officer honor graduate of the Special Forces Qualification course. Assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Jamie commanded Green Berets on missions to Thailand, Korea, and the Philippines. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Jamie deployed to the Philippines to conduct counterterrorism operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group. Jamie and his fellow Green Berets successfully Col. In 1986, John found himself in California working for McDonnell Douglas on the International Space Station program. There he met his wife, Kim, and years later welcomed his daughter, Jessie, into the world. John found his passion running space exploration technology R&D projects. He worked on planetary rovers, lunar resource processing, Mars penetrators, and on-orbit assembly before focusing on launch vehicles. In 1996, John was a flight engineer on the Delta Clipper test rocket and subsequently worked on the Delta III and Delta IV. In 2000, he founded the Garvey Spacecraft Corporation to develop small launch vehicles while teaming with California State University, Long Beach, with funding from the Department of Defense and NASA. In 2016, John co-founded Vector Launch, which provides responsive access to space to the emerging small satellite user community. John has created and managed engineering teams that have accomplished multiple “first flights” of new technologies for such launch systems. His list of customers included Sea Launch, the Musk Foundation team that grew into SpaceX; Space Launch; BlastOff!; ORBITEC; the Air Force Research Lab; Space and Missile Systems Center; Operationally Responsive Space Office; DARPA; and multiple NASA centers. When John arrived on campus, he was able to tour the water tower and forge, now a hub of Avon engineering classes: Introduction to Engineering Design and two sections of Aerospace Engineering. He also gave a presentation to the Aerospace Engineering classes, sharing insights about his own path and how the values learned at Avon influenced his decisions along the way. He recounted the importance of Avon’s values during his acceptance speech at the award ceremony. COLONEL JAMES “JAMIE” E. HAYES III graduated from Avon Old Farms in 1988 before attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he studied history and played

advised and assisted the Philippines Armed Forces in defeating the Abu Sayyaf Group throughout the southern province of Mindanao, depriving the terrorists of a safe haven from which they could plan and execute attacks against the United States. Jamie then deployed to Iraq in 2005, commanding a Special Forces company in counterterrorism operations against al-Qaeda and hostile Shia militia groups. Jamie and his teams of Green Berets, along with their Iraqi Special Forces partners, operated in an area the size of New Jersey, conducting direct action and special reconnaissance missions to help liberate Iraq from violent extremism. Selected for battalion-level command in 2011, Jamie formed and led a Security Force Advisor and Assistance Team that played a critical role in securing Kandahar, Afghanistan, from Taliban fighters. Soon after his promotion to colonel in 2014, Jamie assumed command of Special Operations Command (Forward) in Yemen. Jamie is currently assigned to the Pentagon as a senior special operations planner. He has two children, Stacy and Emma.

Spring Sports This spring, 273 boys joined a competitive athletic team—that’s an outstanding 68 percent of our student population. With five varsity rosters from which to choose, a lot of talent was on display as the Winged Beavers competed at impressive levels all spring.

Baseball The 2018 varsity baseball team finished with an overall record of 15-5 (12-3 in the Founders League, good for a second-place league finish). This year’s team could be described as extremely talented, classy, and competitive. Eight seniors matriculated to colleges where they will continue their baseball careers. Led by captains Hudson Haskin ’18, Dylan Nastri ’18, and Will Gersky ’19, the 2018 team proved to be one of the most dynamic offensive teams in recent memory. In fact, the New England Baseball Journal ranked Avon in the top 10 throughout all eight weeks of the regular season, with a final ranking of sixth in New England. This year’s team averaged more than eight runs per game while limiting opponents to just over 3.5 runs per game. The team blasted 19 home runs and hit for a .305 batting average.

Tennis The varsity tennis team set out at the beginning of the season to achieve a winning record and perhaps sneak into post-season play. It ended up with seven wins and seven losses, with several rained-out matches Avon was favored to win. The seven losses were all against teams that made the New England Championships. The team’s best win was against a very good Suffield squad, with Avon taking four tiebreakers in four key matches to win 7-0. Coach Henry Coons was most proud of the team’s effort against perennial powerhouse Hotchkiss; Avonians fought hard to get to four deciding tiebreakers in third sets, coming up short but earning the respect of the opponent.

Lacrosse The 2018 varsity lacrosse team enjoyed a solid season and closed the year with a 14-7 record while playing some of the best teams in secondary school lacrosse. In New England competition, the team lost only three contests while winning six out of seven Founders League encounters. Without doubt, the one-goal victories over Choate and Trinity Pawling stood out, and the Alumni Day win over Deerfield (6-3) will long be remembered. As in every year, the Westminster game was at the very heart of the season. Because of the “backyard” nature of the rivalry, emotions ran high. At the final whistle, Avon had scored 17 goals to the Martlets’ seven. The 2018 team will send seniors off to a broad array of excellent colleges and universities. At the close of the campaign, the Connecticut Officials Association announced that the Bob McHenry Sportsmanship Award was awarded to the entire Avon Old Farms lacrosse program. This is a great honor and one that speaks to the demeanor of Avon’s coaches and players. Congratulations to all in being recognized in such a manner!

Track and Field The 2018 track and field team finished with a regular season record of 9-2, finishing second in the Founders League and fourth at the NEPSTA Championships. The team set five school records this year and notched 22 all-time top-10 performances. This included the school record and New Balance National Championships qualifying 4x100m relay team of Miles Wotorson ’19, Kevin Zhang ’19, Nick Keroack ’18, and Elijah Gordon ’19. Avon athletes set several school records this year, including Chris Moore in the 800m (1:58.77), Kevin Zhang in the 200m (22.30), Elijah Gordon in the 100m (10.98), and Taisun Phommachanh in the LJ (21-10.5). The 4x100m team of Wotorson, Keroack, Zhang, and Gordon won the Founders League and NEPSTA titles on their way to setting a school record of 42.79 and qualifying for the New Balance National Championships. Elijah Gordon also added Founders League and NEPSTA titles in the 100m.

Golf The Avon Old Farms golf team had a tremendous season, marked by many successes. The Winged Beavers posted a regular season head-to-head match record of 18 wins and three losses. Many of these matches were extremely close. Frequent low rounds from underclassmen helped earn victory at the end of the day for Avon. The team’s strength was the depth of players, who focused on improving their game every day in practice.

In tournament play, Avon got off to a solid start, finishing in second place in the Suffield Invitational and then winning the Avon Coppola Cup. The team continued consistent play and secured a second-place finish at the 16-school WNEPSA Invitational. Avon finished the season on a positive note, finishing in third place out of 23 schools in the Kingswood Invitational Tournament and winning the Founders League Championship by defeating Taft, who has held this honor for at least the past five or so years.

News and Notes

The Blue Blazer Ball

T

his annual spring dinner and auction gala provides a unique opportunity for the extended Avon Old Farms family to celebrate the traditions and values of this exceptional school, featuring a farm-to-table feast highlighted by both silent and live auction items. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the Blue Blazer Ball on April 28, 2018; the event was an overwhelming success! The Student Enrichment Fund had a record-breaking year with $140,000 raised. This fund supports enhancements that benefit Avon students in academics, sports, art, and extracurricular activities. The success of the evening continued with a record amount of more than $95,000 raised that evening for the Outreach Fund. It was established by Avon Old Farms School to provide financial resources, as finances allow, to support students with demonstrated financial need who encounter unexpected financial difficulties. Monies are awarded as outright grants without the expectation of repayment. Thank you for your generous contributions and support.

News and Notes

The Peter M. Evans History Initiative The 2018 Peter M. Evans History Initiative featured New Yorker writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Dexter Filkins and PBS/BBC reporter and Emmy-winning filmmaker Ramita Navai in addressing this year’s topic: war, religion, and society in the Middle East.

Dexter Filkins was a correspondent for the New York Times who covered the Taliban government in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks. He went back to Afghanistan post-9/11 to report on the end of the Taliban regime and also spent more than five years covering the Iraq war for the Times; he drove a rented Chevy Suburban from Kuwait City to Baghdad just behind advancing US forces in 2003. In 2004, Filkins was embedded with U.S. Marines in Fallujah and witnessed brutal street-to-street fighting. Filkins wrote a memoir of his war experiences, The Forever War (2008), that won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best nonfiction in 2008. His Pulitzer for war reporting came in 2009. He joined the New Yorker in 2011. Ramita Navai is an author and a filmmaker. The daughter of an officer in the pre-revolutionary Iranian navy, she was born in Iran and is now a British citizen living in London. When the Islamic Revolution of 1979 drove out the second Pahlavi shah, Mohammed Reza (1941–1979) and destroyed the imperial armed forces, the family went into exile in Britain where Navai grew up. A British Daily Times correspondent in Tehran between 2003 and 2006, she lost her accreditation, worked as a teacher and began to collect stories of the traditional families, and south Tehran underworld that make up the core of her book, City of

Lies. The book illustrates how the Islamic Republic, for all its unworldliness, has survived for 35 years and why a leader such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a former president, was able to command a following. Navai also has made many documentary films and won an Emmy in 2012 for the PBS Frontline film, Syria Undercover, on the Syrian civil war. In addition to participating in the Evans History Initiative, Navai also “dropped in” on (via Skype) America’s “War on Terror,” 2001–2017, a January Intersession course, to share her firsthand insights on the topic. To prepare students for this year’s speakers, Dr. Chris Doyle spoke at multiple morning meetings about the correspondents’ credentials and work and even shared clips from both. On Thursday, April 5, Syria Undercover was screened in the Brown Auditorium. Filkins was on campus Monday, April 23, and Navai was on campus both Monday, April 23, and Tuesday, April 24. They were welcomed into history, English, photography, and film classes as well as onto the Avon stage for an all-school presentation to speak about their experiences in unstable regions, the lessons they learned while reporting undercover, their lives as journalists, and the politics of war.

Huntington Eldridge III

By Morgan C. Cugell

When Huntington Eldridge III told Avon Old Farms School that he was making a large donation last spring from his Buchanan Family Foundation, a few people were surprised. After all, Hunt is not an Avon alumnus. In fact, he attended a perennial local rival—Westminster School. Huntington Eldridge III (left) and his father, Huntington Eldrigde Jr. ‘69, enjoyed their time in the outdoors together.

ut Eldridge feels like part of the Avon family. Avon is where his father, Huntington Eldridge Jr. ’69, spent his senior year and where he fell in love with the outdoors—a passion that endured throughout his career and the rest of his life. When Peter Evans mentioned that the Nimrod cabin—home to Avon’s oldest club and beyond repair after standing aside Beaver Pond for close to 100 years—needed renovation, Eldridge knew

it was the perfect way to honor his father’s memory in a place his father had loved so dearly. The Buchanan Family Foundation’s generous donation provided the funds to support the entire cabin project. Similar to the Nimrod pavilion renovation (2014), Avon students have been an integral, hands-on part of the process. Upgrades to the old log cabin include a large porch and a fireplace. to the Nimrod Club and a master woodworker, planned and designed the new structure to stand on the cabin’s existing site; contractors are finishing the work this summer. Eldridge and the Foundation have received regular updates with photos of the project and are excited to see it come to life. “Our goal was always to find a project that would have a worthwhile impact on the community or place we chose,” Eldridge explains. “Additionally, we wanted to find a project that would also have been meaningful and special to my father. Avon always held a special place in his heart. It was the perfect starting point when we decided to begin the search for a way to honor his memory. When I learned about how much my father had already invested in Avon and discovered that the cabin was in need of repair, I

knew we were on the right path. “My father served on many boards and committees during his life, including the Buchanan Foundation. He always taught me to look for a gift that had the possibility of having not only a large impact, but a lasting one,” continues Eldridge. “I felt that a new cabin for the Nimrod Club had the potential to have a large impact with many ripple effects for years to come. I knew that my father would be honored to have his name connected with the Nimrod cabin.” Eldridge notes that despite his father’s short time at Avon, he always considered it life-changing. “In one year, Avon helped show him a path that allowed him to grow into the great man he became,” says Eldridge. “Avon’s nourishing community, incredible faculty, and the Nimrod

“I believe, like my father, in the

club’s values. It’s not about having a fancy new cabin but rather having a reason to go spend time with friends enjoying nature and a safe place to learn how to do that together.”

Club helped my father develop his love for the outdoors, which he then spent his life enjoying—and his career trying to protect.” After graduating from Avon in 1969, Eldridge Jr. went on to attend Franklin & Marshall College, then moved to Chicago, where he eventually settled at the Northern Trust Bank. In the early 1980s, he joined Ducks Unlimited and worked there as director of development, helping raise funds to preserve wetlands and protect waterfowl and their habitats. “He was a conservationist to the core, an avid outdoorsman,” states Eldridge. “He spent countless hours trying to protect the outdoors and plenty more enjoying them.” It was a lifestyle his father shared with his family, explains Eldridge. “The Nimrod Club taught my father more than just how to fish. It instilled in him the value of hard work with your own two hands. It also taught him to appreciate and want to understand more about wildlife, which not only became his career but a lifelong passion—a passion that he shared with me. I grew up enjoying our time spent fishing and hunting together and the occasional weekend campout in the back yard. I may have attended Westminster, but I know that some of the club’s values are instilled in me because I learned them from my father.” The new cabin, he says, will allow future generations of Avonians to enjoy the Nimrod Club, develop close relationships, and, hopefully, come to find a love for the outdoors themselves, just as his father did. “I believe, like my father, in the club’s values. It’s not about having a fancy new cabin but rather having a reason to go spend time with friends enjoying nature and a safe place to learn how to do that together. 56

“Spending time outside was important for my father because of the bonds and friendships that were formed,” observes Eldridge. “I think it was Thoreau who wrote, ‘Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.’ The Nimrod Club offers an opportunity for boys, at such a critical age—and high school isn’t easy—to make genuine friends by the campfire and lifelong friendships while fishing in Beaver Pond. That’s something pretty special.” After graduating from Westminster in 2006, Eldridge III followed in his father’s footsteps, attending Franklin & Marshall College, studying theater, and graduating in 2010. He then spent eight years in New York City, balancing a life of auditions and classes with working at the Monkey Bar, meeting and serving many of his idols. He recently moved to Atlanta, working in sales and advertising, and is currently in the process of opening a small restaurant there with his business partner. At the end of the day, he says, he still lives a life he learned from his father. “Like my dad, I am an avid outdoors man,” states Eldridge. “I’m happiest with a cold beer and fly on the water, on some quiet remote waterway. Simplicity in life isn’t a bad thing; learning the value of hard work with your own two hands is a rarity these days. I prefer forging my own trail in the backwoods with a dog or a buddy, in hopes that we can emerge from there with a better story than the ones we came in with,” Eldridge explains. “If this new cabin can offer a reason for a student to join the club and learn more about nature, maybe even develop a newfound passion for the outdoors, and that, in turn, becomes one that he shares and enjoys with generations to come … well, then I think my father and I will be pretty happy with the impact this cabin made.”

News and Notes

Farewell to Coach Skip Flanagan This spring, Dr. Henry “Skip” Flanagan announced to the Avon Old Farms community that, after nearly 20 years with us and 50 years of working in the world of independent schools, he would retire as of June 30, 2018.

To

honor Coach Flanagan, a commemorative ceremony was held on Saturday, May 12, at one of the last varsity lacrosse home games of the season. Headmaster Ken LaRocque was flanked by Dr. Flanagan’s wife, children, and grandchildren as they presented Coach Flanagan with a detailed proclamation announcing Dr. Henry H. Flanagan Jr. as the head coach emeritus of the Avon Old Farms School varsity lacrosse program. They also presented him with a lacrosse jersey, a duplicate of which will hang in the student center on permanent display. In his usual eloquent fashion, Skip wrote letters to several constituencies to let them know of his decision to retire and share one last time how much the Avon community has meant to him: “I have always considered the lacrosse field itself as one more classroom—herein the magic is found. In the academic arena, one is taught, challenged, and tested. Preparation, determination, and dogged effort are all part of the academic rhythm if progress is to be realized. This formula is also essential on the field of play. In both settings, you have experienced the joy of success as well as the frustration and disappointment of failure. But along the way, you have set goals, disciplined yourself to perform at your very best, and reached for a collective result, shared with your classmates. Even more, you have learned the nature of being humble in victory and gracefully resolute in defeat, both

needed in today’s world. It has not been by accident that the award for good sportsmanship here in New England has been conferred upon Avon on more than one occasion. Of and by itself, the real value of our sport comes only in the application of what is learned in playing when applied to the vicissitudes of life itself. The friendships and goodwill manifested along the way must be considered a type of ‘value added,’ as the English might observe. “It has been my pleasure and honor to serve Avon Old Farms. I will always be thankful for what the game has brought my way and for relationships that continue to be meaningful. Your loyalty and kindness toward me know no bounds. I will always remain in your debt.” Following in his footsteps as head lacrosse coach will be Keith Lee. A member of the faculty for the past seven years, Keith has the current title associate head coach. We wish Coach Flanagan all happiness in his retirement and look forward to having him return to campus often.

Report of Annual Giving

L E T T E R F R O M T H E C H A I R M A N O F T H E B OA R D

Dear Avon Family, I’m pleased to report that our fiscal year ending June 2018 was conducted with proper discipline and attention to our school’s fiscal operations. As the chairman of the Board of Directors, I, as well as the Board, continue to oversee a conservative budgeting process that supports a balanced budget for the school while focusing on enhancing our endowment. This year, we have once again maintained positive operating financial results. This facilitates our mission and helps our school aspire and persevere.

F

ulfilling our mission requires a significant commitment to our students and faculty. Avon must balance our school expenses with income generated from tuition, annual fundraising, and the endowment. The 2017–2018 budget was balanced through the work of our admissions staff, prudent management of the school’s operations, appropriate management of our endowment and investments, and the exceptional support of our donor community. Over the last year, we continued to invest in our people, programs, and facilities. Your partnership is valued greatly. On behalf of our boys, the school’s administration and faculty, and the Board of Directors, we thank you for making Avon a priority.

“The brotherhood is why I support Avon each year. I want the current and future Men of Avon to have a similar experience to mine. As an active member of the alumni base, I’ve met men that graduated decades before me, and this upcoming year I am proud to claim a decade following. I want to ensure we continue to prepare the boys for the world after the farm.” —IAN J. LAPIN ’09

“I give to Avon because

I know what that school can do for the boys. The school was generous to me, and I believe in giving back. I think about the boys that need help to attend. I think about the teachers who work seven days a week. I think about the refectory and the athletic facilities. I think about the future and where leadership is trying to bring the school. I believe in my heart that I should support the school’s mission. It’s not a cliché; Avon is the best school for boys.”
