The talents and imaginations of local students have wowed us here at the Alberni Valley Times. Students from grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 answered our call for help in preparing the advertisements for our special Education Week 2014 supplement. All of the advertisements in this publication were designed and produced by students. In early January, invitations went out to all grade 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 students in the Alberni Valley. The idea to have students prepare the ads was initiated by the Alberni Valley Times and supported by 24 local advertisers. Over 200 students from 9 classes took part in the Design An Ad project.
Alberni Valley Times representatives visited the classes and explained the role of community newspapers and advertising. They invited the students to take part in the contest. Participating advertisers supplied the children with a few guidelines on what should be in the ads, then the students were given free reign. Each advertiser selected their favourite ad to appear in this special section. Certificates are being awarded to all the students who participated. The Design An Ad project illustrates the great co-operation between the media, businesses and schools. Please take time to look at these superb ads. They are sure to bring a smile to your face.
The Alberni Valley Times thanks all the students, teachers and businesses that participated in the Design An Ad Project for their support.

About the front cover All students who participated in the Design An Ad Contest were also invited to design the front cover. Students were asked to create a drawing that illustrated Education Week and what Education meant to them. The response from the students was amazing. It was very difficult to narrow the field down and make a choice. It was a true testament to the students’ creativity and all the talented and dedicated educators. Olivia Seaman of Maquinna Elementary School won a pizza party for her entire class courtesy of Quality Foods.
