THE CENTER

EVOLVING AND GROWING LEGACY

This has been a momentous year for the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (Center). At the same time that our educational programming was evolving and growing, construction began on our new three-building Center complex in the heart of UArizona medical campus. It’s an exciting time to work concurrently on these two foundations that are creating the Center’s legacy.

We have expanded our Foundational Fellowship Curriculum (FFC) partnerships. In fall 2022 Maharishi International University (MIU) began offering the Center’s FFC as the core of their Fellowship in Integrative Medicine with an emphasis on Ayurvedic Medicine. And the Center partnered with the oncology fellowships at the UArizona and the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale to create and offer a Fellowship program in Integrative Medicine Hematology Oncology (IMHO). The first five IMHO Fellows enrolled this year.

Medical student training grew as well. The Integrative Medicine Distinction Tract (IMDT) program, a four-year commitment for medical students had 76 graduates and is now licensed to the University of California–Irvine. At the same time, Integrative Medicine Elective Rotation (IMER) for fourthyear students and residents reached almost 600 alumni.

Equally encouraging is the response to our programming for the public. Our Body of Wonder podcast offers conversations with Integrative Medicine (IM) experts from diverse fields. The show averages 10,000 listeners per month.

Innovation has enabled us to grow professional development as well. For the 2022 Integrative Medicine in Residency Faculty Development Meeting held in Tucson, we initiated a dual option of in-person and virtual. The theme of Wellbeing set the perfect tone for these faculty that represent 109 institutions globally and almost 3,000 residents.

We also organized hybrid residential weeks for the Fellows, with in-person and virtual options. The combined residential events served more than 250 Fellows. Additionally, 2,200 healthcare professionals attended our 2022 Integrative Medicine Summit.

A new partnership with the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) will enlarge the Center’s Integrative Health & Lifestyle Program (IHeLp) enrollment and provide training and professional development opportunities. Nurses who have completed IHeLp will be able to sit for the AHNCC certification exam.

And most gratifying is an innovative partnership with the UArizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Arizona Experiment Station. We’ve launched an initiative to better understand the role food plays in inflammation and healthy immune responses. This leading-edge research has the potential to influence resilience, self-care, and optimal health and wellbeing.

What a wonderful year! Our Center Family continues to flourish and to build toward legacy. We are grateful to you for the support that helped make all this possible!

Best in health,

PLANTING THE SEED OF HUMAN WELLNESS

The Center is partnering with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Arizona Experiment Station to launch an initiative studying the impacts of nutrition on inflammation resolution.

The collaboration will take root at the Arizona Experiment Station’s Campus Agricultural Center, a 160-acre research station located three miles North of the UArizona’s main campus in Tucson. The facility serves the university’s land-grant mission to bring evidence-based science to the public and advance research in the areas of food security, energy and water use efficiency, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, and human health.

Working to flip the switch from a disease-focused approach towards promoting optimal human health, the collaborative will allow research participants to be seen in a newly renovated clinical translational space at the Campus Agricultural Center.

Biomedical analytics for the initiative will be led by J. Ray Runyon, PhD, assistant research professor in the department of Environmental Science and the Center’s Stress Challenge/Sweat Collection/Sweat Biomarker lab director, using a state-of-the art liquid chromatography mass spectrometer at the Arizona Experiment Station.

The initiative will leverage the research team’s expertise to foster interactive community wellness and provide a better understanding of the role food plays in resilience to inflammation and healthy immune responses.

6 2022 Center for Integrative Medicine Annual Report
“The facilities and cutting-edge instrumentation that has become available through this collaboration provide an unprecedented opportunity for transformative discovery-based research concerning the relationship between nutrition, inflammation and human wellness,” said Parker Antin, PhD, Associate Vice President for Research in the Division of Agriculture, Life & Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension.

EXCITING RESEARCH ON HEALTH & WELLBEING

THE CENTER’S RESEARCH PROGRAM STRIVES TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.

Healthcare provider burnout is real. In 2021 the Center launched the Healthcare Professional Wellbeing (HPW) course to address this issue. HPW explores foundational knowledge about wellbeing, as well as systemic and organizational issues unique to the healthcare system [e.g., strategies for physicians to build healthy resilience, manage chronic stress, prevent burnout, and practice mindfulness].

Almost 300 IMR residents enrolled in an HPW study to determine course impact on learners, measuring long term resiliency and wellbeing. This multi-site study showed benefits were evident after completion of the course, and maintained over six months. It demonstrated the potential impact of a brief online course on a broad variety of healthcare professionals with the possibility of feasible, easy to distribute, high impact intervention.

Study results are in preparation for conference presentation at the 2023 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine annual meeting.

DEVELOPING NEW PROGRAMMING

OPPORTUNITIES

In 2022 the Center began offering a new Fellowship in Integrative Medicine Hematology Oncology (IMHO). It has been a long-held desire of the Center to create an Integrative Oncology fellowship program. The IMHO Fellowship was co-created with Drs. John Camoriano and Krisstina Gowin, Fellowship graduates and oncology faculty members, in collaboration with the Center’s associate fellowship director Lise Alschuler, ND.

To determine program needs, an Integrative Hematology Oncology Education Survey was sent to hematology/oncology, radiation oncology, and palliative care program directors, physicians, fellows, and internal medicine residents. In this national survey of 208 physicians:

• 64% expressed interest in an IMHO educational program

• IMHO training was perceived as valuable and desirable

• 87% believed that fellows should participate in IMHO research

The first IMHO Fellows enrolled in July 2022 (3 Mayo, 2 UArizona) in an IRB-approved pilot study. Application will be made to the Academic Consortium of Integrative Medicine & Health for IMHO Fellowship recognition by the American Board of Integrative Medicine.

THE AMERICAN HOLISTIC NURSES CREDENTIALING CORPORATION

The American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) advances holistic nursing and nurse coaching through certification.

We are excited to announce that all nurses earning a certificate from our Integrative Health & Lifestyle program are eligible to sit for the holistic nurse certification exam thanks to a collaboration with AHNCC. Since the 2022 official announcement, 24 nurses joined other health professionals, to begin their educational path with the Center’s 2023 Class. Upon graduation in July, those nurses will have earned the required 48 continuing nurse education credits in holistic and integrative health to be eligible to sit for the AHNCC certification exam. AHNCC certifications in holistic nursing help clearly identify nurses with expertise in addressing the whole patient with a variety of integrative tools, with an emphasis on lifestyle and self-care.

2022 CONSTRUCTION ON THE ANDREW WEIL CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

Groundbreaking for the 30,000-square-foot Center occurred in May 2022 and construction is expected to be completed in fall 2023. The new facility will include three buildings surrounded by desert gardens and linked by a series of pathways. It was designed to embody our tenet of whole-person wellness and the principles of integrative health. Each building will represent an aspect of the whole person: mind, body and spirit.

“I am feeling total satisfaction and delight at seeing this construction. I think having this building right in the heart of the medical campus of the University of Arizona is a great statement of the progress we’ve made. Integrative Medicine is becoming mainstream.

“My hopes for the building are that it will attract people from all over the world who want to learn more about Integrative Medicine, and understand the mission of the our Center which is to transform medicine, medical education, and healthcare. We hope it will serve as a place to educate the public about self-care, wellness, and how to best use integrative therapies.”

“This building is called the Mind… where the minds of the people who do the work develop the content and the research concepts…using their creative vision for Integrative Medicine.

“That building we call the Body… where we’ll have our teaching kitchen…do yoga... We’ll be physically active in a variety of ways.

“And then, we also have the Spirit. That is our meditation space.

“In addition to being a place for education and training, this complex will serve as a ‘living lab’ for integrative medicine collaborative research on place and well-being.”

“When I join[ed] the Center, my dream was to link[it with] the College of Medicine–Tucson, and the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture to carry out research and instantiate wellbeing in the built environment.

“It is exciting to see these two sides of my life’s work come together in this building complex: the research on the science of the mind-body connection, and the impact of the built environment on health.”
