ne network, 13 schools. kipp la is a non-profit network of college-preparatory, public charter schools serving elementary and middle school students. We have a 12-year track record of preparing our students in educationally underserved communities for success in college and life. Our schools are part of the free public school system and enrollment is open to all students. Our charter schools are given more academic and budgetary flexibility than traditional public schools and in exchange commit to deliver high-quality academic results for students. There are nearly 200 KIPP schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia serving 70,000 students on their path to and through college. We believe that excellent academics, safe and structured schools, empowered teachers, and an emphasis on character development are the foundation for student success, and we strive to provide this for every student. At KIPP, teachers, students, and families are all united around the same goal—college graduation. Through our collective hard work and commitment, KIPP students complete college at a rate that is above the national average for all students and four times higher than students of similar economic backgrounds. At KIPP LA, we are driven by the belief that every student deserves a high-quality education. Our promise to support our students on their journeys to and through college guides everything we do.

for our students.

kipp la’s mission is to prepare our students for success in school, college, and life. Our schools’ love for our students drives their commitment to supporting our students to and through college. Rigorous academics, character education, engaging extracurricular activities, and support beyond the school day ensure that students have the opportunities to explore their interests and prepare for college and life. Through this ‘whole child’ approach, our students will become lifelong learners who will change their communities and the world.

Special education at KIPP LA is as diverse as the needs of our students. “That flexibility is the key factor that differentiates programs at our schools from traditional ones,” says Managing Director of Special Education Kim Damman. “By building programs to meet the needs of our students, we are better able to support students in achieving their academic goals,” she says. Thanks to a large on-site team, we are able to tailor classroom environments to meet the needs of all KIPPsters at each school. At KIPP Scholar Academy, personalized learning within an existing intensive intervention program helped special education teachers identify and target academic lessons. As a result, students in the program experienced twice as much growth academically than their peers in the general classes. Recognizing a need for increased socio-emotional learning, special education teachers at KIPP Philosophers Academy created classrooms where KIPPsters learn conflict resolution, social skills, and receive therapeutic counseling. Since opening both programs in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the district plans to replicate KIPP LA’s innovations at traditional public schools. Programs like these allow us to share and collaborate with others to serve all students.

how do you educate the whole child in your classroom?

can you describe kipp raíces academy’s culture?

Natalie: One important thing is bringing your own personality and passions into your teaching. The ways that you can relate to the lessons or connect to those ideas adds another dimension to your teaching.

Joshua: Founding School Leader Amber Medina laid the foundation when she started Raíces—if it’s not good for kids, we don’t do it. Having that be the center of the way we do things affects everything else. Our conversations aren’t about the best test-taking strategies—they’re about what’s good for kids. Chris was insistent upon us getting together before the school year started to come up with team norms and set the tone for how we were going to work together. We shared common beliefs about education and what we want our classrooms to look and feel like, and we meticulously planned out details big and small.

Joshua: We are honest with our students about issues we’re facing. We try to engage them in a way to build a critical understanding of their world while matching it with developmentally-appropriate language. The foundation of our school is very student-centered. Kids love being here and we don’t want to take that away by making the skills they learn rote. We want to bring them to life and instill a love of learning.

2015_KIPPLA_AR_v12.indd 9

Sarah: We continue to talk about those things and make sure they’re still going well. Even though it’s already a strong team, it still feels like there’s always room for improvement and growth.

at kipp la, our schools seek to provide our students with an innovative, characterbuilding education. This means an extended school day that offers an expanded core curriculum, visual and performing arts, and physical education. It also means that teachers and leaders have a unique role each day and use data to drive instruction and inform their professional development. At KIPP LA, teachers and leaders are aligned with one promise and one goal: raising the bar for student achievement. The fourth grade team at KIPP Raíces Academy shows how KIPP LA teachers not only help students make the most gains academically, but also help them discover their own passions.

why is collaboration important for your team? Sarah: If it’s working well in your class, it’s probably going to work well for other kids, too, so you need to share it. Aaron: For example, in our fourth grade founding year, Josh’s [class] had much better results [than everyone else’s]. There was a whole series of steps that we weren’t doing! After he talked through his process with us, we were able to implement it and improve it for all students. Natalie: Initially, we didn’t know what effect it would have on students’ love of reading or an intrinsic motivation to read, but the data helped guide our decisions. Chris: By having these constant conversations, you have this collective knowledge that you can fine-tune and increase the quality of your lessons each time, which I think is great.

Personalized learning and classroom innovations help KIPPsters develop 21st century skills. To that end, we have created Innovation Coordinator (IC) Stars, a unique partnership between the data and school innovation teams that deepen our focus on technology literacy. IC Stars are teachers or leaders who train their teams on integrating technology into the classroom, maximizing best practices in Illuminate, our student data system, and implementing data to help drive instruction. IC Stars also curate best practices to share across our schools and outside KIPP LA.

ne promise,

academic excellence.

at kipp la, we strive to instill joy and a love for learning in our schools. By implementing the Common Core Standards, we are increasing the rigor and engagement in our classrooms and helping our students become lifelong learners. This new way of teaching enhances our students’ success by encouraging them to create, think, and communicate in creative and innovative ways. In 2015, for the first time, California administered the state-wide exam created by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). The exam was administered as part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). State-wide, only 30% of economically disadvantaged students met the new standards in English Language Arts (ELA), and only 21% did so in math. At KIPP LA, 55% of our students met the standards in ELA and 47% did so in math. Although KIPP LA students outperformed their peers in other public schools, we know that there is still more work to be done. We are proud of the progress our KIPPsters make each year and remain laser-focused on how we can better prepare them for life in college and beyond. Our approach to student success relies not only on excellent teachers, but also on strong school leadership and engagement with families so our KIPPsters never stop learning. Together, we work as one team to keep our promise to our students and prepare them for success in the competitive world.

just as we make the promise to our students, all adults can and will achieve. All teachers and leaders collaborate across our schools and receive robust professional development. KIPP LA’s leadership development programs provide our team and family with opportunities to deepen their practice and love of teaching and supporting students. Deans and Assistant Principals play an important role in school leadership by supporting their school’s culture and driving teaching and learning. From parent engagement to goal-setting with students to organizing school celebrations, they work together with their school leaders to keep promises big and small to our students. Here, our deans and assistant principals reflect on their favorite parts of working at a KIPP LA school.

my school leaders and colleagues have molded me into the leader I am today. Without their guidance, unconditional love, and unwavering support, I would not have been able to take the risks I have taken and gained the confidence needed because they believed in me when I did not.

ne goal,

to and through college.

kipp la’s kipp through college (ktc) team supports our students and alumni on their journeys to and through college. In middle school, the KTC team builds upon the college-going culture within our schools by introducing KIPPsters to a variety of high school options and supporting them throughout the high school placement process. Once in high school, KTC advisors work with our alumni to assist with competitive summer program applications, SAT/ACT prep, college applications, scholarships, and financial aid. Our alumni know that KTC will be there to support them through academic, social, and emotional challenges. KIPP’s national college partners play a key role in our alumni’s successes in higher education. Our partners have committed not only to creating pathways for our KIPPsters, but also supporting them through organizational structures to improve college persistence and graduation rates for first-generation students. They also brainstorm with us to create new strategies for improving college retention and the quality of education for our alumni.

To date, KIPP has created partnerships with more than 70 colleges and universities nationwide. Each has committed to supporting the success of KIPPsters and other first-generation students on campus. Over time, we believe these partnerships will improve our KIPPsters’ college experience as well as offer unique opportunities to learn about how to better support first-generation college students.

ne network, growing our impact.

kipp la is growing to 20 schools by 2020, at which point we will serve approximately 12,000 students and alumni. In the underserved communities of South and East Los Angeles, the need for high-quality education is immense. In Los Angeles, one in five high school graduates is college-ready.* As we expand our impact, we strive to change those odds and put more students in Los Angeles on the path to and through college.
