“KIPP New Jersey’s SPARK Academy is constantly looking for ways they can help kids more, and words are met with action. I’m glad they’re growing and that more kids like my sons will be able to grow with them.” deirdre foster kipp spark academy and team academy parent

Our first In August 2014, KIPP New Jersey opened Lanning Square Primary with 103 kindergartners (see academic results below). In the 2015-2016 school year, Lanning Square Primary grew to serve 245 students in grades K and 1. melinda moore, a kipp lanning square primary and middle school parent moved to camden so she could send her five children and two grandchildren to kcna. “To me the biggest compliment a school can get is when a student goes home and says “Mom, I had a great day at school.” My children say that every day. Your school showed my children that they have purpose, and that their thoughts, dreams and actions matter. I search for words daily but find none good enough to appreciate your teachers, a community of individuals who come together daily as educators and purposely make their words empower my children to chase their dreams.”

Our first In August 2014, KIPP New Jersey opened Life Academy with 112 kindergarteners and took responsibility for serving 108 first through fourth grade students from an existing school (see grades 1-4 academic results below). In the 2015-2016 school year, Life Academy grew to serve 308 students in grades K-4. “Most children from Bragaw started Life Academy in the fall of 2014 nearly a full year behind in math and reading, judging by a widely used test called Measures of Academic Progress. By spring, students on average had roughly hit grade level in math or surpassed it, depending on the grade. In reading, on average they had almost caught up.

“My daughter had a tough time at her last school. Since she’s started at KCNA she has seen that school can be a place where she feels safe and can express herself. Now she loves going to school. I’m no longer alone in fighting for her future and have a whole family alongside me.” sherell payton hall 8th grade parent kipp lanning square middle

“I’ve had two students at KIPP schools with behavior issues. My son was a typical boy talking all the time, being disrespectful at times, and just a plain, out-right discipline problem. Despite those trying times he thrived academically and went on to college. KIPP still provides him with a stipend every semester for college expenses, even after acting up for all those years. My daughter experienced a divorce which for some years caused her to act out. She would fight, talk back, and yell. KIPP did not give up on her. Today, she’s still with KIPP schools, doing much better and is a cheerleader [at Spark Academy]. Next year she will go to a KIPP middle school and one day hopes to be a chef.“

for the wheeler-henderson family,
is truly a Quyama Wheeler, pictured above, was in the second class ever to graduate from TEAM Academy. She went on to earn a Jack Kent Cooke scholarship that guaranteed her a full ride from high school through graduate school. Quyama excelled at Exeter and then Howard University and is now a teacher with Teach For America at a KIPP School. Her younger brothers Jaleel and Tyshon soon followed in her footsteps, graduating from TEAM Academy and going on to St. George’s boarding school on a full scholarship where they both played football and basketball. Today Jaleel attends Kilgore where he stars on the basketball team and his “little” brother Tyshon is at UMass where he plays offensive line. Their cousin Kinyette also attended TEAM Academy as a member of the founding class and is now a KIPP teacher in New Orleans.

A charismatic student, KIPP TEAM Academy alumnus John Joseph knows the importance of mentoring the next generation of students. With support from Julian Forde, his KIPP Through College counselor, John was able to balance academics while participating on his college track team. Recognizing the significance of the bond he shared with Mr. Forde and how it helped him achieve his college degree, John returned to TEAM Academy each summer during college to mentor students. He continues to serve as a positive role model to his TEAM and family.

“The Newark Collegiate Academy faculty and staff have done an amazing job of coordinating the students’ schedules and providing the support needed for students and their families. The students have adapted to college life very quickly. The Bloomfield College faculty and staff comment that NCA students are a pleasure to have in class; they are reliable and responsible, engaged and openminded. We look forward to expanding our early college partnership with NCA.”

“We selected, KIPP New Jersey, a public charter school, and we never looked back. I heard and saw a great group of teachers and staff who cared about the students, their success and their families. My daughter’s mind is being nourished with experiences and she is excelling at reading and mathematics. She is getting a well-rounded education with a foreign language, music, and fitness.” — cheryl taylor, kipp new jersey parent
