Statement Ms. Katharine Bulbulia, AWEPA Council Member

AWEPA Financial Statement 2006 The year 2006 was a very successful year for AWEPA. We have experienced a growth in funding and project implementation. In 25 African parliaments Support Programmes were implemented, focussing on strengthening the capacities of parliaments, parliamentarians and its staff. Internally, AWEPA has worked hard to further professionalise its organisation through the improvement of monitoring and evaluation, quality control, communications and staff capacity building. The process of decentralisation within the organisation is high on AWEPA’s agenda. So far, AWEPA program design has mainly been the task of Headquarters. The African offices have focussed on program implementation. That situation is now changing, with more responsibility delegated to the African offices in all phases of the programmes. This goes hand in hand with further capacity building of the African office staff. In 2006, the income and grants amounted to 5,041,000 EUR. Compared to 2005 (3,489,000 EUR), this is an increase of 1,192,000 EUR or 31%. The year closed with a surplus of 3,800 EUR after increase of reserves for special purposes (93,500 EUR). Considering the level of reserves ultimo 2006, a sound financial basis for AWEPA is maintained. The funding situation for 2007 is better than ever. The current budget shows some 6,000,000 EUR for this year and the forecasts for additional funding look promising. AWEPA is proud to say that in 2006 we obtained special consultative status at the UN ECOSOC and were admitted to the OECD-DAC list of ODA eligible organisations. We could not have had such a successful year without our partners and donors. We thank them for making this possible.
Dr. Jan Nico Scholten AWEPA President
Mr. Pär Granstedt, AWEPA Secretary General
