The town of Lalibela is a medieval settlement found in the Lasta area of the Wello Zone and lies at the center of an extensive complex of churches hewn from rocks. The town boasts of its 11 remarkable rock-hewn monolithic churches, believed to have been built by King Lalibela in the late 12th or early 13th Century. The structures are carved into the solid rock, and are considered to be among the exceptional wonders of the world. Each building is architecturally unique and reflects beautifully executed craftsmanship, They remain as places of worship to this day.
The Siemen Mountains National Park is found twenty kilometers north-east of Gonder covering 179 square kilometers of highland area of 3,300 meters. Mountain Ras Dashen which is 4,620 meters high and the highest peak in Ethiopia, stands adjacent to the park. The Simien escarpments, which are often compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States of America, have been registered by by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site ,The Simien Mountain massif is a broad plateau, cut off to the north and west by an enormous single crag over 60 kilometers long. To the south, the tableland slopes gently down to 2,200 meters, divided by gorges 1,000 meters deep.Within this spectacular splendor live the Walia (Abyssinian) Ibex, Simien Red Fox and Gelada Baboon - all endemic to Ethiopia - as well as the Hamadryas baboon, klipspringer and bushbuck. Birds such as the lammergeyer, augur buzzard, Verreaux›s eagle, kestrel and falcon also soar above this mountain retreat.

During the17th Century Gonder has served as the capital of Ethiopia, and is renowned for its medieval Castles and churches. The City›s unique imperial compound contains a number of Castles built between 1632 and 1855 by the various Emperors who reigned during this era. These dramatic castles, unlike any other African castles, display magnificent and rich architectural designs revealing the Axumite traditions. Other treasures of Gonder include the 18th Century palace of Ras Beit, the bath of Fasilades, the ruined palace of Kusquam, and the church of Debre Berhane Selassie with its unique murals.
