Fifty years is a long time for an all-volunteer regatta of the calibre of Congressional Cup. Particularly impressive is that it has become a prestigious annual event regarded around the world as the “grandfather of modern match racing.” In 1963, the goal of the Club’s Congressional Cup founders was to create an annual, world-scale regatta that would run over a short course with intense action, be spectator-friendly and, most importantly, offer a competition that would be a true test of skill by using equal and identical boats. The first regatta was held in 1965. Through the years, Congressional Cup has attracted an increasingly impressive following of internationally renowned skippers and crews. The first international competitors were from Canada in 1969. Since then, skippers and crews from around the world -- including many America’s Cup participants -have sought an invitation to the regatta. Because of the skill required of skippers and crews in racing identical yachts under the current match race concept, skippers are ranked by their history of races and wins. Only the highest ranked or most promising are invited to participate in Congressional Cup. Accordingly, the level of competition produces a roster of world-class skippers, crews and umpires that reads like a Who’s Who of Yachting. Now in its Fifty-First year, Congressional Cup is joining the World Match Race Tour as the opening event for 2015.

Match Cup Sweden started off in 1994 as a local regatta in the small picturesque island of Marstrand on the West coast of Sweden. The event joined the Tour in 2000 and since then has attracted around 130,000 spectators annually to the venue. The event attracts over 50 corporate partners every year and plays host to over 15,000 hospitality guests during the event in a custom built marquee directly in front of the racecourse providing an exceptional experience for guests. The island of Marstrand is approximately 50km north-west of Gothenburg. Marstrand is a wonderful summer paradise with a wide range of things to see and do. The island has many beaches and nature walks and a large mix of history and culture dating back to the 13th century. Travel to the archipelago is easy and can be done either by boat or car.

The creation of the two separate Monsoon Cup events is a further development of the highly successful initiative to grow the sport of match racing, and sailing, in Malaysia. Innovatige and the National Sports Council runs a comprehensive sailing development programme with the introduction of the Liga Layar Malaysia (LLM), a series of eight match racing events in Malaysia, and the Belia Belayar programme. This grassroots programme aimed at introducing youth sailors to the sport of sailing. So far this year, the Belia Belayar has introduced over 4,500 youth sailors to the sport via the government-backed programme.

Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda - a financial services and re-insurance center, major port and tourist destination with a subtropical climate and year-round warm weather. The highlight of the Hamilton sailing calendar is the Argo Group Gold Cup, the penultimate stage of the World Match Racing Tour. The award for the winner is the historic and coveted King Edward VII Gold Cup, the oldest match racing trophy for one-design yachts in the world. This trophy was originally presented at the Tri-Centenary Regatta in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1907 by King Edward VII. In 1984 the regatta moved from the Great Sound (venue for the 35th Americas Cup) into Hamilton Harbour introducing the concept of stadium racing to the world of sailing.
WORLD TOUR EVENTS For the first time since the World Tour was founded in 2000, the series will award championship points to all events on the schedule divided into two categories – World Tour Events and World Championship Events. Skippers will count their highest five results towards the World Championship title. The World Tour Events are made up of the Qualifying events of the World Championship events plus other selected ISAF Graded Events. The goal is to have over 20 events forming the schedule that count points towards the ISAF Match Racing World Championship.

HISTORY OF MATCH RACING AND THE WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR
TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP HALL OF FAME
The history of Match Racing dates back to 1660 when the first sail off taking place in the United Kingdom between King Charles II and his brother James, Duke of York. The race was from Greenwich to Gravesend and back for a prize of 100 guineas. Much later in the late 1930’s, the competition of match racing evolved with the introduction of ‘one-design’ yachts held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club for the King Edward VII Gold Cup. The interest of match racing grew stronger when three prestigious match racing cup came together. The Congressional Cup in Long Beach, California and the Royal Lymington Cup in the United Kingdom came together with the King Edward VII Gold Cup to form a series of match racing events. This series of events survived through to the early 1970’s. In 1985, the first World Match Racing Conference was established to supervise on the ruling and restrictions of all match racing regattas.

Magnus Holmberg from Sweden, skipper of Team StoraEnso, wins the 2000-’01 Swedish Match Tour.
The series received new interest with the introduction of the Faberge Egg award in 1995, a series of events where a competitor had to win three out of five events to win the highest prize money of USD250,000. Having all regattas under the watchful eye of the International Yacht Racing Union, the governing body was renamed a year later to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and set up a new classification for match racing.
Ian Williams from Great Britain, skipper of Team GAC Pindar, wins the 2014 Alpari World Match Racing Tour.
With Brut leaving as the main sponsor for the Faberge Egg series, Swedish tobacco company Swedish Match AB became the new title sponsor of the series and formed the Swedish Match Grand Prix Sailing Tour in 1998. ISAF later sanctioned the Tour as the official match racing series and renamed the series to Swedish Match Tour. Since then, the Swedish Match Tour had been a well-established match racing sailing series. However, the series took a hit in 2005 when the tobacco ruling ruled out the sponsorship in a sporting event. Swedish Match AB had to step down as a sponsor leaving the series to rebrand as the World Match Racing Tour. With the success of the World Match Racing Tour in 2006, ISAF has decided to partner with the series granting the Tour “ISAF Special Event” status. The partnership guaranteed the World Match Racing Tour winner the ISAF Match Racing World Champion title and trophy - since a single event has always decided this event. From 2006 onwards, the World Champion has been awarded to the winner of the World Match Racing Tour. The World Tour is now an annual series of events. Skippers and teams score points based on their finishing position in each event in which added up to a total point system in the World Tour leaderboard standings. With the success of the World Match Racing Tour over the years, leading Forex company Alpari UK Ltd sponsored of the Tour from 2012 to 2014. 2015 marks the 16th season of the World Match Racing Tour with an expansion of sixteen event schedule on the world championship. The full schedule is expected to exceed 20 events by the first Tour event in May 2015 at the 51st Congressional Cup in Long Beach, California.
Taylor Canfield from US Virgin Islands, kipper of US One, wins the 2013 Alpari World Match Racing Tour.
WHAT IS MATCH RACING MATCH RACING IS THE GREATEST SHOW ON WATER!
It is a competition that places two boats, experienced skippers and crews against each other in a great sailing duel, from which there is only one winner. There is no second place. Crews sail against each other in two identically matched boats up to 40 feet in length. Match racing also has its own set of rules, which are subtly different from fleet racing rules. The competition is tremendously exciting to participate in. The crews are aggressive in their strategy and the boats stay close to each other with collisions coming thick and fast. To resolve the inevitable disputes, Match Racing uses on-the-water-umpires to hand out ‘instant justice’. Match racing is tremendously exciting for those participating and, unlike some other sailing competitions; match racing can be equally thrilling to watch. Before the start, the boats vie for control, circling each other and trying to wipe each other off into spectator boats in an elaborate game of cat and mouse.
MATCH RACING RULES
THE ART OF MATCH RACING #everymovecounts
When the wind comes across the boats on opposite sides, the boat with the wind on the left (port) side must give way to the boat with the wind on the right (starboard) side. When the wind comes across the boats on the same side and they are not overlapped, the boat behind (clear astern) must keep clear of the boat (clear) ahead. When the wind comes across the boats on the same side and they are overlapped, the boat on the windward (upwind) side must keep clear of the other leeward (downwind) boat. Umpires follow each race and make instant penalty decisions. A green and white flag means no penalty but a yellow or blue flag means the boat in the match with the corresponding flag flying on the back of their boat must take a penalty before finishing. A penalty turn when sailing towards the wind means turning the stern of the boat through the wind and when sailing away from the wind a penalty is taken when the boat turns the bow through the wind.
The flags above are flown on the committee boat during a match race event. The numbers on the flags indicate the minutes before the race starts.
Green & White Flag
Red Flag
A competitor requests a decision from the on-water umpires believing a rule has been broken.
An umpire signalling that there isn’t any penalty “NO PENALTY” to action.
An umpire signalling the Red Flag together with blue or yellow flag: indicates that boat must perform a penalty turn immediately.
Blue Flag
Black Flag
Penalty signal from umpires or premature start (from race committee) on blue-flagged boat (flag on backstay).
An umpire signalling the Black Flag together with blue or yellow flag: indicates that the boat is disqualified from the match in progress

On the downwind run the trailing boat has a chance to attack from behind, positioning itself so it’s spinnaker casts a wind shadow over the leader. To escape, the boat may gybe away, creating heartpounding onboard action - and spectacular sailing as crews furiously match each other manouevers.

Protest Flag (Code Y Flag)
Protest flag flown by competitor.
C) DOWNWIND RUN
THE STARTING SEQUENCE (MINUTES BEFORE RACE STARTS)
B) WINDWARD LEG
On the course the boats commence an upwind battle; the lead boat spilling turbulent air off its sails to slow the boat behind. Furious tacking is likely to ensue with the latter trying to force a crew error in order to rob their aggressor of the advantage. The end of the first windward leg provides an opportunity for the trailing boat to seize the edge by creating an inside overlap at two lengths from the mark, forcing the lead boat to give room which usually means relinquishing its lead.
D) DROPPING THE SPINNAKER
At the bottom mark the same overlap rules apply and the action intensifies as crews drop the spinnaker and prepare the boat for the next leg while the skipper jostles for position.
E) TO THE FINISH
The race will last two or sometimes three laps before the boats head for the finish line (same as the start line) where the battle ends. Often the race will go all the way to the line with neither boat giving up until the winners coloured flag (blue or yellow) is flown from the race committee boat.

A) THE START IS CRITICAL
The starting sequence begins with a 7-minute gun followed 2 minutes later by a 5 minute signal. At 4 minutes the boats enter the pre-start area and begin an intricate, heated dogfight, with the two boats engaging in a furious one-on-one battle to gain the leading position on the start line. The countdown continues with a 1-minute gun then the starting signal, at which point the boats are allowed to cross starting line and head off around the course.
BOWMAN
The bowman who is responsible for sail changes at the front of the boat. He is the “eye at the front. The bowman must be athletic and possess the ability to move about the front of the boat with ease and speed.
MAINSHEET TRIMMER
TRIMMER
The trimmer controls the smaller head or front sail. On the downwind leg, he will work closely with the pitman in controlling the spinnaker.
The mainsheet trimmer controls the largest sail onboard where most of the speed is centered. The mainsheet trimmer works closely with the skipper to ensure the maximum speed potential is gained from his sail.
SKIPPER PITMAN
The pitman assists the trimmer in winching in the headsail & spinnaker. He controls most of the ropes that will shape the sails.
The skipper (or helmsman) is the team leader or captain on the yacht whose job not only involves steering the boat around the course but will make the final decisions regarding tactics and strategy during the course of the race.
2015 TOUR CARD SKIPPERS The Tour Card system is a means to provide event promoters with access to a consistent pool of the world’s top match racers and this year demand for the Tour Cards has remained very high. This ensures high quality racing at events but at the same time, a regular group of skippers allows the Tour to build profiles via PR, media messaging and television coverage. The level of interest this year is outstanding, proving that the Tour provides first class competition and exceptional value to sailors and sponsors. The 2015/16 season will award championship points to all events on the schedule divided into two categories – World Tour Events and World Championship Events. Skippers will count their highest five results towards the World Championship title. Invitations to the seven World Championship events will be guaranteed for Tour Card skippers and invites to the final event will be taken from the leader board, adding pressure on the Tour Card skippers to perform. Other non Tour Card skippers will also have the opportunity to compete on the Tour through wild card entries to events or by competing at World Tour events for each of the World Championship stages. Keith Swinton’s passion for sailing began in Perth at the age of eight and the list of competitions, classes and achievements he has under his belt belies his age. Swinton made his debut as a Tour Card skipper in 2012 after his team achievements in 2011 - Berlin Match Race and the Chicago Match Cup when they beat many of the teams who compete on the Tour. He won his first event title on the Tour the St. Moritz Match Race in Switzerland in 2012. However, finishing sixth at the season finale in 2012 saw him drop to 4th place on the leaderboard, frustratingly close to the podium but none the less a great performance for the team. 2013 and 2014/15 campaigns were tough for his team. He fought a close battle having been within reach of the podium for most of the year. Finishing 6th overall in both seasons, Swinton will lead his team back on track again in high spirits - ready for the 2015/16 campaign with a goal of securing their first Championship medal.

Johnie Berntsson’s Stena Sailing Team came together in 1997 and have been progressing up the match racing ladder ever since. In October 2008, Berntsson enjoyed his second career victory on the World Tour when his team captured the King Edward VII Gold Cup. He endured a tough start to the 2011 season when he debuted as a Tour Card Holder. However, he pulled things together for an incredible run of form, finishing second in the final two events – the Argo group Gold Cup and the Monsoon Cup. It was a bitter-sweet finish to the season for the team who would have loved to record another Tour victory however it catapulted them up the overall standings to a third place finish.

Berntsson’s finished 8th overall in their 2013 campaign and took time off during the 2014/15 season but managed a great comeback after winning their second King Edward VII Gold Cup in Bermuda at the 2014 Argo Group Gold Cup as a wild card invite.

After his winning performance in Bermuda, Berntsson rejoins the World Match Racing Tour as a Tour Card Holder again. And if he brings some consistency to this season, he stands every chance of realising his goal - a podium finish in the World Championship.
