Beyond breast cancer

Health psychologist Jane Fletcher will join former Olympian Raelene Boyle this month in a bid to rally Border women who have suffered breast cancer for the Breast Cancer Network Australia’s free information forum - Living Well Beyond Breast Cancer. FOR DETAILS TURN TO PAGE 6

Into the Lymelight By KRYSTEN MANUEL TO SAY Wodonga woman Korinne McNeill ‘struggled’ with Lyme disease is like calling an ultramarathon a Sunday stroll. After a seemingly harmless tick bite near Torquay, Victoria, the world of the 21-year-old, successful, superhealthy business woman changed forever, leaving her with symptoms that made simple tasks like getting up in the morning feel like an Olympic effort. For years, many people around her would impatiently say ‘it’s all in your head,’ and as such, this is the first time Ms McNeill has told her story. In other parts of the world, tickcarried Lyme disease is at epidemic proportions, affecting millions of people. In Australia though, the government and medical system fail to acknowledge the existence of Lyme disease locally. As a result, Ms McNeill went undiagnosed for over eight years, allowing the disease to deeply take root. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that affects its victims on all levels from their organs, tissues, and cellular function, to energy, emotions, hormones, fertility and capacity for life. The toxicity, inflammation, depletion and damage that results from this infection causes both chronic degenerative symptoms, overlaid with cyclic acute flare-ups. Each day brings something different. Lyme disease is cyclic, with ebbs and flares as the life-cycles of the lyme bacteria phase through, and different organs battle through the effects. There are staple symptoms - pain, lethargy, scary heart pain and beat fluctuations, tremors, cold sweats, memory loss, hormone imbalances, numbness, and foggy brain.

“I had to adapt my life to the limitations this disease puts on me, but I refuse to let it bring me down, Ms McNeill said. “I consciously choose to push through, to force my body by pure will most days, so that I may live my life. “I built a career around yoga for this reason; it is one of the few things that help me function and feel a little more ‘normal’. It helps keep me sane while avoiding the inflammatory seize-up effects in my body. It supports me mentally, emotionally and physically, keeping my body strong while stimulating my immune system to help fight this war. I’d be lost without it. Many people haven’t heard of Lyme disease, let alone understand how debilitating it is. Lyme disease is considered non-existent in Australia, and is often being defined instead by the symptoms and pathologies it causes - fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, motor neurone disease, guillain-barre syndrome, lupus, Alzeimer’s, juvenile reumatoid arthritis, MS, Parkinson’s, etcetera. The irony is that it is preventable if it is treated early. With a preventive course of antibiotics and an antifungal straight away for six to eight weeks after a tick bite or possible infective exposure, this disease can be entirely diverted. If, that is, the medical system doesn’t let you down by misdiagnosing and delaying treatment. “For me, eight years undiagnosed after a tick bite, means I have extensive and permanent damage to most systems of my body, and I will be dealing with this for the rest of my life. October has been declared a month for building Lyme disease awareness, and as such Korinne McNeill is finally bringing her experience out of the closet and into the limelight.

It’s been a long road for Korinne McNeill, but this year she is finally telling of her experience of Lyme disease in a bid to help others.

Recognising Lyme disease

MANY diseases and cancers have a day, month or week dedicated to spreading awareness as a method of prevention. This particular month is dedicated to spreading the awareness of Lyme disease in Australia - a disease which has not been recognised by Australian health authorities but has sufferers and their GPs desperately seeking recognition. Some 15,000 people in Australia have been diagnosed with Lyme disease, with an estimated 200,000 undiagnosed. The issue is so contentious that many GPs have openly admitted to being ostracised in the medical world for diagnosing patients with lyme diesease. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners won’t recognise it, nor will the Australian Medical Association. But why? The idea that Lyme disease carrying ticks or, ‘nature’s dirty needles’ are not present in Australia came from a study back in 1994 that has since been found to be flawed in its methodology, but even if it wasn’t - it was nearly 20 years ago! The Australian Government chief medical officer professor Chris Baggoley has established a clinical advisory committee on Lyme disease to provide him with advice on the evidence for Lyme disease in Australia, diagnostic testing, treatment and research requirements. Do your part - learn about the disease and spread the word.

MOST of us will never know just how fortunate we are to live in ’the lucky country’, but the Bhutanese refugees of the Border do - and they’re celebrating. Five years ago, almost to the day, the first of the Bhutanese refugees came to settle on the Border, and Teju Chouhan was one of them. “I was among what you might call the first fleet of 22 Bhutanese on October 8, 2008, Mr Chouhan said. “Since then the community has grown to about 600 across Albury Wodonga. Like many of the Bhutanese refugees, Mr Chouhan fled a dangerous and fearful existence, only to be refused entry to India and sent to a refugee camp on the border of India and Nepal. Mr Chouhan was only 10 years old when he left Bhutan. He spent 19 years in a notoriously unstable, unhealthy refugee camp, but has now been living in Australia for five years. Given the Bhutanese refugee’s history, it’s no surprise they are celebrating the date. Mr Chouhan said it was not just a celebration of the anniversary, but a chance to say thankyou to those who had made the transition easier, as well as a welcome gesture to other cultures. “We have had annual celebrations to mark the anniversaries but we want to make this a special event because it’s the fifth anniversary, Mr Chouhan said “This time we’ve added a new dimension to

We’ll be having cultural dances, singing and feasting - I think we’ll have over 400 people. “We have been working closely with different cultural communities, like African, Indian, Nepalese and Filipino. The Bhutanese community is very excited to be inviting other cultures to their event, seeing it as a chance to increase the strength of multiculturalism as well as a chance to help transitions as much as possible. “We want to work in partnership with other communities, Mr Chouhan said. “We have been here five years and we’re more settled than some. a number of other communities and we believe strength comes from working together, celebrating our differences and the multicultural fabric we have in Albury Wodonga - that’s what’s really behind this program. Many members of the Bhutanese community have volunteered to be a part of St Vincent de Paul’s humanitarian settlement services (HSS). Volunteers assist newly arrived families to settle into life in the region, set up their homes and lives so they can function independently and find helpful resources in the community including libraries and sports groups. Often these volunteers become the “first Australian friend many refugee families have. Mr Chouhan donates his time to the HSS program, among a plethora of other local volunteer work. The Bhutanese Association in Albury Inc. is holding its 2013 Multicultural Program celebration on Saturday 5 October at the Mirambeena Community Centre, 19 Martha Mews Lavington, from 10am-2pm. For anyone over 10 years old, the cost is $10. RSVP today, though tickets are available at the door. For more details or to RSVP, please contact Tulshi Guragai on 0403 069 113, or Teju Chouhan on 0401 311 193.

‘Kidnapper’ probe By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY police are appealing for public assistance to locate a woman wanted over an alleged kidnapping in Corowa. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of 32-year-old Krystal Joy Stewart after she failed to appear at Albury Local Court on Monday 16 September 2013. Stewart is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 165 centimetres tall, 70 kilograms, thin, with brown hair (usually dyed), and hazel eyes. The warrant relates to an alleged incident in February 2013 at Corowa where a man was allegedly kidnapped by Stewart and an accomplice, Anthony Richard Illarietti, and driven to Albury on 4 February. Illarietti threatened the man using garden secateurs and a knife concealed under his shirt, forcing the man to transfer $1000 from an ATM. Police stopped Illarietti’s car in Lavington after seeing him speaking on a mobile phone. The victim escaped and Illarietti attempted to drive away. Stewart was also found to have $900, in $50 notes, hidden on her person when she was searched. When Stewart appeared in court on 5 February, police opposed bail, though Magistrate Megan Greenwood freed Stewart, provided she adhered to a set of conditions including observing a nightly curfew. Members of the public who see Krystal Joy Stewart are urged not to approach her but to contact triple zero immediately.

Killed in crash By KRYSTEN MANUEL A COLLISION between a motorcycle and a Toyota Hilux on Sunday has claimed the life of a man and left his 12-year-old daughter fighting for her life. The man, 40, had his daughter on the back of the motorcycle and was heading towards Yackandandah when he hit a trailer behind the Hilux at approximately 2.30pm on Sunday. The man was unable to be resuscitated on the scene. His daughter left with serious injuries including broken bones and internal trauma was later flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. While there were people on the scene shortly after the collision, police are still investigating the accident and would like to hear from anyone who can impart information. Police are looking at all elements of the crash, be they mechanical, environmental or human. Baranduda Boulevard was closed in both lanes until 8pm.

THE alarm goes off. I breathe. All I can feel is pain, pulsing through my joints, my bones, my muscles, my head. Pain as though I have run a marathon, pulled an all-night bender ... then got hit by a semi-trailer. My head pounds. Any movement, any light, any noise making it tighter. My heart ... it scares me, it’s beating so hard and fast, and it hurts too. I want to throw up. My arms, my legs, feel as though they are made of lead. I try to move them, try to roll over, trying to wake up, trying to send life into this lifeless body. I look at my fingers, and ask them to move. I look at my arms and ask them to move. Then slowly, with more breath, and more time, I can sit up, but I can’t see clearly yet. My vision is blurred, my head is spinning. A bit more breath, a bit more time, and slowly I make my way to the kitchen where I know that coffee and a few handfuls of supplements will offer some life support. My blood sugar starts to rise, the energy will come and I will start to pretend to be normal. The pain - still there, the nausea - still there, my heart, still paining, my arms, still numb. ‘You can do this.’ I get in the car and drive to work. Every day is a battle - and I can’t call in sick every day. I fall asleep at the traffic lights, my body feels toxic, my body so tired, my energy eroded by pain. I pull over feeling the need to vomit. I breathe through it, ‘you can do this.’ At work some of my co-workers imply that chronic fatigue syndrome, which I had been diagnosed with, is all in the head. Those who really know me can see my inflammation is out of control, I am in a dire state of disease. For over eight years this was my un-named battle. spent with Lyme disease seeing GPs, physicists , endocrinologists, hematologists, neurologists, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and more. Eight years of CAT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, countless blood tests all confirming that things were not right, yet not providing enough evidence to put a name it. The western medicine system bounced me from specialist to specialist to no avail. ‘You have chronic fatigue syndrome.’ I refused to believe it. A syndrome is a symptom, not a cause. Other practitioners declined to treat me because they didn’t understand it, and were perplexed by the way my body behaved. That is one of the biggest challenges for those with lyme disease - they don’t always look sick,

so people think they’re faking, or seeking attention. I am an absurdly healthy person and when you sit in front of a GP with a list of over 30 big complaints like heart pain, difficulty breathing and hormonal problems they look at you like ‘there’s something wrong with you all right - here’s a

script for some anti-depressants,’ as they give you that ‘you’re a hypochondriac’ look. To make matters worse I had friends telling me the same thing. ‘Maybe you need to talk to someone.’ For me this was the worst and most challenging part of the disease. The physical elements I could deal with but the mental and emotional effect of constantly being told it’s in your head, even when you have tests showing that you are unwell and your body is not functioning properly, was the most defeating part. As a result, I shut down. I stopped talking. I never spoke about how sick I was with anyone. This was the loneliest time of my life. My naturopath, Monica Williams, my guardian angel, was the only person who knew the extent of how sick I was, the only person who believed me, and who I truly confided in. In fact it was she who suspected the Lyme disease, and suggested I see a GP in Melbourne who specialised in it. On 16 March 2012 I received a phone call that changed everything. My GP called to tell me that my tests for Lyme disease had come back positive. This was the most emotional day of my life. I ended up curled in a ball, crying my eyes out for hours. Not because I had Lyme disease, but because of the relief, I finally had an answer, I was not crazy. I also knew that now I could identify the battle I was fighting, I could use more appropriate weapons. And finally I didn’t have to expend so much energy pretending I was okay. The treatment began and helped me feel much better, but it continues - an ongoing combination of alternative therapies and Western drugs. I can be almost normal on some days, but totally debilitated on others. My digestive system is weak, I live on a gluten-free, lactose-free, soyfree, low fructose and vegetarian diet - and even then I still have strong reactions to many things I eat. I have a low functioning pituitary gland, adrenal glands, and thyroid, and at this stage it is

Beyond breast cancer By KRYSTEN MANUEL WOMEN from across the Border are invited to attend Breast Cancer Network Australia’s (BCNA) free information forum Living Well Beyond Breast Cancer. Designed especially for women, men and families affected by breast cancer from rural and regional areas, the forum highlights the medical, physical and emotional aspects of living well after a breast cancer diagnosis. The program will feature the latest information and advice from breast cancer and health experts, inspiration from Olympian and breast cancer survivor Raelene Boyle and opportunities to meet others going through a similar experience. “One of the most powerful things about these types of forums is you have the ability for women to talk about their experience with other people who get it, health psycologist Jane Fletcher said. “The uniqueness of the cancer experience makes it very isolating, particularly to family and friends who haven’t had that experience. So an event like this gives people the opportunity to talk about their ex-

perience with people who they don’t need to explain things to - they’re women who understand. “It’s also an opportunity for women to bring their partners along so that they can get an insight into what the lived experience of breast cancer is actually like. Dr Fletcher will be talking about some of the typical emotional and mental difficulties of cancer, as well as some strategies to deal with them. “One of the big things I talk about is how you manage fear of recurrence, she said. “We estimate that about a third of women will have met the criteria for anxiety and probably around a quarter will meet a criteria for significant disorders such as depression. They’re probably the most common psychological issues and then we have issues of grief and loss that people go through - especially changed body image. “It’s also important to remember the psycho-sexual issues, especially of women who are in menopause and we’re chemically inducing menopause in them. “We can’t take the experience away, but what we can do with these

sorts of forums is give people the opportunity, in a safe place, to talk about their experience and we can provide them with good quality information. “Those who have had or have cancer compare themselves to other people and see someone to look up to and normalise their experience and know they’re not alone. The BCNA Living Well Beyond Breast Cancer Forum series has been made possible through the Australian Government’s Supporting Women in Rural Areas Diagnosed with Breast Cancer funding. Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is the peak national organisation for Australians personally affected by breast cancer, and consists of a network of more than 85,000 individual members and over 310 member groups. BCNA informs, empowers, represents and links together women and families affected by breast cancer. BCNA works to ensure that women diagnosed with breast cancer, and their families, receive the very best information, treatment, care and support possible. THIS October long weekend, discover why the Canberra region is internationally acclaimed for their cool climate wines as Murrumbateman’s wineries match their best drops to delicious tasting plates at the Murrumbateman Moving Feast. A firm fixture on the calendar of wine and food enthusiasts, the Moving Feast is essentially a ‘roving degustation’ - with each participating winery serving up their signature dish, including a dessert option together with a glass of hand-picked wine. “The Moving Feast has really proved to be a unique way to get out and explore the region, with wineries dotted all around this very picturesque part of the world, festival organiser, Greg Gallagher of Gallagher Wines said. “And this year, visitors are in for a treat with many wineries serving up their 2013 vintage - which was marked by ideal ripening conditions and has really extenuated the flavour of the grapes. This year, the festivities will kick-off the weekend prior to the Moving Feast with the presentation of the Australian Cool Climate Wine Show trophy on Friday 27 September and the Wine Show at the Murrumbateman Recreation Hall on the Saturday. Then over 5 and 6 October, 14 of the region’s wineries will open their cellar doors to showcase their finest drops matched to tasting plates featuring local produce. Located on the Barton Highway between Canberra and Yass, Murrumbateman is well worth a day trip for this fantastic festival. The Murrumbateman Moving Feast includes 14 Wineries in the Murrumbateman Region and runs from Saturday 5 to Monday 7 October. Cost: $20 for main fare and $15 for desserts. Long road of hard work By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S RARE these days to meet an artist who spends up to seven years on one painting, but it works for Robin Cerini. Cerini’s exhibition The Long Road is currently being exhibited in a rush of bold colours and shapes - a trademark of her works - at Arts Space Wodonga. “I’ve always exhibited but never a solo, and I thought ‘okay, this is it, this is my swan song,’ Cerini said. From an early age, the challenge for Cerini was to combine naturalistic atmospheres with semi-abstract compositions to give a layered impression of the intended subject. Many times the painting, not the artist has taken over. Cerini describes her work as abstract expressionism through her use of design, colour, light and shadow. Her works generally favour symbolism and geometric constructions - the changing effects of light and shadow show the influence of her surroundings combined with an imaginative interpretation of the same surroundings. Themes over the years have generally been based on the observance of the effects of the moonlight and sunlight, the colours and textures of the changing seasons and reflections and refractions of water. “My husband and I kept looking at my work and said we couldn’t really tabulate it because I don’t do the same

style all the time or the same subject matter, but I do suns and moons, she said. “So we thought the easiest way is to say it’s abstract expressionism, some of them would be impressionistic. “I haven’t done a pure abstract as such. I’m able to do it, but there’s nothing in it for me. I can enjoy looking at someone else’s totally abstract work and get something from it, but it’s not me. “So it’s basically oil painting and in line with the renaissance period where you built paintings up in layers, someone else did the work and you did the finishing touches, but I do it all. Having said that, it’s no surprise it takes Cerini a lot of time and effort to produce one of her master pieces. “It takes a long time, ten years for the series of four, she said. “One of the others was seven years. I have a number of paintings put out and I work on them as the mood takes me. With oils, it has to dry, I don’t speed it up, it’s just as it happens. And I make my own varnish - it’s hard work. Cerini’s love of painting started in primary school and followed her passion through to university at Swinburne, eventually emerging as a teacher. The Long Road refers to the story of her life, beginning in the bush, gaining professional experience in Melbourne, living in Wodonga for 30 years, then

Don’t miss Robin Cerini’s stunning works of abstract expressionism - The Long Road. back into the bush, all the while feeding her creative abilities and creating intricate, mesmerising works. “It’s a release - my word, you can leave children and housework and everything else, switch off and not feel guilty. I go down and put my music

on and away I go! She said. Music, mostly classical, jazz and poetry have also had profound influence on Cerini’s use of colour and tonal value in her abstract compositions. Cerini has ran two classes at Arts Space for children throughout her ex-

hibition - which is on until 12 October - a final class will be held on 12 October. Find Arts Space at 160 Lawrence St Wodonga. To book classes, call (02) 6022 9600.

Gaze on the graze VICTORIA’S best produce, coupled with some great Aussie talent, including Daryl Braithwaite performing his new album, will make for one spectacular day at Harvest ’n’ Graze in Bright. “I’ve done two Harvest ’n’ Grazes - they’re great!” Braithwaite said. “I like to get audiences involved, whether they dance or move or come close or whatever, and that happens at Harvest ’n’ Graze, it’s a really nice atmosphere.” Braithwaite will be performing his classics as well as new songs from his new album, Forever The Tourist. “The single is called Not Too Late and the comment I’ve had so far is it’s a different style,” he said. “I’m probably too close to it but I think it’s a good piece of work. It makes me feel good when I hear it and it’s being played here in Melbourne on the radio which is great. “Soundwise it’s slightly different and the approach might be a bit more modern, for me!” Gourmet produce will be aplenty at Bright with up to 25 stalls of the state’s best regional wines, olives, honey, boutique beers, artisan delicacies and a vast assortment of ready to eat delights just to name a few.

HiLife Helicopters will also be taking scenic flights over Bright throughout the day. The team at Harvest ‘n’ Graze is also proud to announce their new partnership with SecondBite. Harvest ’n’ Graze has created a family friendly festival based around the incredible produce on offer right here in Victoria. All stallholders are hand-picked and share the Harvest ‘n’ Graze philosophy of ’Local. Seasonal. Family. AS someone who thinks Adam Sandler is an idiot at the best of times, it’s rather charitable of me to resist fully siding with the critics on this one. One of the funnier reviews I read said Grown Ups 2 is “nothing but Adam Sandler hanging out with his pals and congratulating himself on how awesome he finds himself to be.” While this is completely true, there are some genuinely funny scenes and lines, just not enough to refer to the film as actually funny. Grown Ups 2 presents an all-star cast and is set on the last day of school before summer holidays. Lenny (Adam Sandler) and his family have relocated back to the small town where he grew up - a very relaxed, lazy town full of

freaks and geeks of every description. Throughout the day, the grown-ups receive constant reminders of how old they are, whilst the kids are personally challenged to be cooler, kinder and more confident. Towards the end a brawl breaks out between the grown-ups and their kids, and the local college students - a highlight of the film. And of course, in the end everyone is much better for the experience and it’s all swings and round-abouts. To be honest, there’s not much to it. There’s not much of a storyline, there’s not very many laughs (especially for the right reasons) and whenever they run out of jokes the film instantly resorts to a convenient boob or booty shot - very clever (insert rolling eyes). But if you’re stuck with child-minding duty this weekend, this is probably a good film to wipe out two hours of your day.

New view on lifestyle estates IT’S no secret that an over 50’s estate can provide the coveted combination of lifestyle, a new home, security and freedom. It’s also no secret that many such lifestyle estates are developed and run with an archaic format that leaves many sighing in disappointment. Wouldn’t it be great if developers could just move away from what was done 20-years-ago and offer up a more current formula? Something that could really be enjoyed from a younger age to maximise the more active and social parts of retiree’s plans. Kensington Gardens has achieved this and they believe retirees should come and see for themselves. Gone are the pokey houses, crammed in with hardly enough room for two cars to pass on the street. Gone is the ‘one room for all purposes’ clubhouse, along with the boring day-today lifestyle and gone is the insistence “I’m too young for a place like that! Kensington Gardens offers architecturally designed three and four bedroom homes, ensuite and bathroom as standard and detached houses with landscaped gardens for privacy. Homes are thoughtfully designed, award winning and built to a high standard of finishes and quality. They allow for a master bedroom, guest bedroom and utility room (computers, arts and crafts equipment). Most plans also have a double garage for either two cars or extra stor-

for housing. The estate is leasehold and, as such, has a continued vested interest in the saleability of houses. The estate is very well maintained and presented, and always will be. Another benefit of living at Kens-

ington Gardens is the architecturally designed $4.5 million clubhouse. With 26-years-experience behind it and purpose built rooms for different activities (a fully equipped gym, computer room, surround sound cinema room, fully licensed bar, French style sitting room),

The builder of choice for Kensington Gardens Albury Alatalo Bros are proud to be associated with Kensington Gardens Albury, a resort style retirement community for the over 50’s. Come and see for yourself, you’ll be pleasantly surprised

the clubhouse is a mecca for activity, socialising, keeping fit and learning new skills. The best part is it’s already built and established ready to enjoy. Residents enjoy an amazing, personalised lifestyle with full use of the clubhouse - which is above and beyond expectations, on the doorstep for them and their guests to use at any time, like an extension of the home. At Kensington Gardens residents become much freer, released from many of the day-to-day responsibilities. They can leave home at the drop of a hat knowing the property is watched, bills forwarded, and lawns maintain. Day to day there’s no more painting, lawn mowing, cleaning swimming pools, it’s all done. For those not working, all they need do is think of new, more enjoyable ways to fill their day‌ learn Thai Chi at the Clubhouse, head out for an extra round of golf at the Thurgoona Golf Club which the estate backs on to. In terms of resident perception to this lifestyle estate, most wish they had moved in sooner. There is no stigma at Kensington Gardens, it has been designed and developed to maximise the fun residents can have now. This is an estate to enrich the lifestyle and you don’t have to be rich to move in. With a fantastic clubhouse, well designed and personalised constructed houses and amazing lifestyle opportunities, the real question is whether you can afford not to be there.

OPEN DAY Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th October

Alatalo behind Kensington By KRYSTEN MANUEL ONE of the main benefits of choosing Kensington Gardens is the freedom of building your own home coupled with professional guidance, making the process as easy and enjoyable as possible. And rest assured, quality is of the utmost importance, as Kensington Gardens chooses to work with the best in the business - Alatalo Bros. “One of the key things that sets us apart in the industry is the quality of the homes,” village manager Tony Lieschke said. “The homes are stand-alone, so you don’t have a high density environment, but the the thing the market really warms to is that we have the flexibility and resources to give them choice. “Residents are not being told ‘there’s your home there, accept it for what it is.’ If it’s in the realms of possibility for either ourselves or the builders, we will do our best to accommodate them.” Alatalo Bros have been working with Kensington Gardens from the very beginning. Based in Albury Wodonga with a building history spanning 30 years, Alatalo Bros are synonymous with attention to detail, personalised service, quality workmanship and a reputation as a progressive property developer.

The company is family owned and operated and dedicated to providing quality homes and residential subdivisions throughout Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga and Shepparton. Kensington Gardens and Alatalo Bros have developed a successful, solid and mutually beneficial relationship over the years, both striving for the same goal - customer satisfaction. “The reputation of Alatalo is unquestionable and given the Greens name, we wanted to make sure we worked with credible local companies,” Mr Lieschke said. “There’s no two ways about it, you can refer to it as indirect marketing but the fact that we can drop the Alatalo name certainly carries weight in the local community. “We honestly can’t speak highly enough of them, they’ve been absolutely over the moon with quality workmanship. “With Flair Cabinets it’s the same thing, there’s not too many that can undermine the quality of their workmanship.” Alatalo construction manager Tony Moyle said the key to their successful business relationship was the mutual ability and desire to work together. “We’re very proud to be part of the association between Kensington Gardens and the Green Group, not just

here in Albury Wodonga but also in Shepparton,” Mr Moyle said. “Col, Tony and the team out at Kensington Gardens are very engaged in the building process. They’re very involved so they know their client is going to be happy with the process at the end of the day. “The biggest thing we’ve been able

to build up with Kensington is the relationship between the two parties. We’ve been able to refine, modify and change things along the way which is giving them better plans. They’ve been very receptive to our suggestions when changes are bought about, and very open and engaged in the whole process so they know their clients will end up with a great home.

“It’s not just a retirement village either, it’s a community and it has a great feel to it.”

OPEN DAY

Meet the village manager – Tony Lieschke By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT took all of 20 minutes to sell the position of village manager to Tony Lieschke three years ago, and he couldn’t be happier with his decision. “I was working for a building company and was approached to see if I would be interested in the role, he said. “I must admit I was guilty of having a pre-conceived idea of the term ‘retirement village’ because it wasn’t a field I had extensive experience in and I linked it with aged care. “I was always curious as to what the Green Group were doing here, so I was here for 20 minutes, got a good idea of the lifestyle concept and that was the catalyst to my decision. Mr Lieschke is going into his fourth year with Kensington Gardens and says his favourite part of the job, by far, is interacting with residents and staff. “I’m being sincere when I say this, growing relationships with the residents is the most enjoyable thing about my role, he said. “The people I’ve met, their extended families and friendships that have been created - they are a wonderful community, fantastic people. “And the staff are just terrific. I like to surround myself

with good people and that’s what we’ve done here, I can’t speak highly enough of them. As village manager, Mr Lieschke is responsible for the development of the village, including overseeing expenditure, marketing, promoting, selling and the marking up of plans. The village offers a great deal of choice in homes, so Mr Lieschke does alterations, co-or-

works smoothly and residents are content. “At the end of the day, my responsibility is to make sure that the village runs as a happy village, he said. “I’m a great believer that if the village is run well, a lot of the marketing will take care of itself through word of mouth. “Like any community there are day to day issues that indi-

dinates all costings and follows builds right through to completion, working in conjunction with Alatalo. The village manager also assists with the development of the existing estate, co-ordinating gardeners and concentrating on maintenance. “Maintenance is something we place very highly on the list of what we’re all about, it’s one of the reasons people come here, he said. Mr Lieschke also liaises with residents on a day to day basis to ensure the village

vidual residents and households deal with and of course it’s my role also to assist with that. I’m very conscious of not giving the impression that when someone comes to live here that it’s a regimented environment, quite the opposite. I believe with the community facilities they can run that virtually like they run their own households. Mr Lieschke grows more passionate about his role each day, genuinely supporting and believing in the Green Group vision for Kensington Gardens. “It’s just marvellous, he said. OPEN DAY Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th October

Back in those days…

What once was - Kensington Gardens, 2006. Inset: The $5 million Kensington clubhouse, complete with cinema, pool, library, auditorium and more.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL LOOKING at Kensington Gardens today, it’s hard to imagine it was once nothing but farmland (though the breathtaking views are a dead give-away). With 90 homes and counting, and a stunning main building complete with pool, gym, auditorium, cinema, library and more, the sky is the limit for Kensington Gardens. “It was a farm with a couple of sheds and a couple of dams in those days,” Green Group regional manager Col Ward said. “Sean Green, our director from Bundaberg, bought the site and asked me to come and have a look around to see if I wanted to move here. “We applied to the council for our development consent in June 2007 and completed our first house in May 2008.” Doug and Dell Crawley were Kensington Gardens’ first residents and currently live in a house looking onto the main building. They are affectionately known as the mayor and mayoress of Kensington Gardens. The following year construction got underway for the main building in conjunction with the first stage. “We built a lot of our facilities up front - many people say it’s one of the most beautiful buildings they’ve seen, particularly in regional areas. ” Mr Ward said.

“It’s reasonably unusual for an estate to put $5 million into a building when they’ve only completed about 20 homes, but that’s what we did. We put our money up and people have recognised that. “We had four stages but we did two stages together. Those two stages were 65 homes completed last year, but by then we had 20 built in the next stage. “From then on we’ve only built as we’ve sold, except for display homes. “Things were reasonably slow at the start but we’re picking up speed now.

Now it’s starting to take on that persona of a very vibrant estate. “We currently have 90 homes and we’re seriously thinking about the next stage which will incorporate lockable caravan bays and the Workshop - the men’s shed.” Mr Ward said now the village is more lively, a mushroom effect had begun to happen, where there were enough residents here to create social and activity groups from, not to mention enjoy busy Friday nights at the bar.

great decision. “People say to me ‘you came here from Queensland?’ and my reply is ‘you don’t know what you’ve got!’ There is just so much in this area, it’s beautiful. “I am a great advocate for our district. “I love the rural feel of our estate, it’s just got something that’s special. It has a rural feel, it has the Alps in the background, we have a common boundary with the Thurgoona Golf Course, and it’s just a really nice feel. “Of course one of the really special features that we have are our residents - they bring the estate to life and are a wonderful and interesting group of people from all walks of life.” Mr Ward’s position has changed slightly over the years, from someone who organised and oversaw the very beginning of the development to a role that monitors quality assurance across all facets of what is a thriving mini community. “My job is to ensure that everything

KENSINGTON Gardens regional manager Col Ward has been with Kensington Gardens from the very beginning - before the first bulldozer rolled onto the land. Originally hailing from Queensland, it didn’t take Mr Ward long to fall in love with the Border and all it has to offer. “I’ve been with the company now for 11 years now and thoroughly enjoy my role,” he said. “I started as manager of Mackay back in 2002 and then after 12 months there was a restructure and I was appointed North Queensland manager overseeing our estates in Mackay and Townsville. Three years later, we made a decision to start developing in Southern New South Wales/ Regional Victoria. “I came down to have a look at Albury, drove out to our site at Thurgoona and up and down Dean Street and I said ‘yes, this is for us.’ I rang my wife and said ‘that’s it, we’re off!’ It was a

runs smoothly, which is made quite easy because of our friendly and competent staff,” he said. “We have residents who have looked through 30-40 estates before deciding to come to Kensington Gardens. I think that is the best recommendation we can give. “Our residents love that fact that we are essentially different to a lot of other estates. We offer many choices through our range of roof tile colours, bricks, internal tiles, carpets. We also allow residents to make alterations to the design. “We have over 20 plans to choose from as well. Quite often when our intending residents bring their adult children out for a look they say ‘sorry Mum and Dad, but we’re going to move in!” Mr Ward has seen Kensington Gardens through every stage to this point and is keen to start work on the next stage which includes the workshop, lockable caravan bays and, of course, more homes.

Green Group regional manager Col Ward has been a driving force behind the success and future success of Kensington Gardens.

All await the day they will see the fruits of the labour of the local team of builders, concreters, tilers, plumbers, painters and gardeners - all hand-

Westmont Aged Care Services will host Wheels at Westmont as part of the City of Wodonga Senior Celebrations.

Classic cars on display WESTMONT Aged Care Services will rev up Wodonga’s senior celebrations this month with a display of hot rods, heritage cars, classic cars and antique motorcycles. Wheels at Westmont will be held from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, October 26. The event, held for the first time last year, is expected to feature about 50 vehicles and attract up to 500 people. Westmont chief executive officer Peter de Koeyer said it was a great event enjoyed by the facility’s 150 residents as well as members of the public.

“The vehicles are fantastic to see,” he said. “At the same time people have the opportunity to look around the facility and be entertained.” In addition to the car display, the day will also include guided tours of the homestead, assisted living apartments and villas, as well as entertainment by local singing sensation, Glenn Starr. Morning tea and a light lunch will be served for a small fee. Westmont is set among beautiful gardens at Baranduda so there is plenty of space to sit, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Westmont is a communityowned, not-for-profit organisation which caters for the ageing community of Wodonga and the surrounding area. Services include residential aged care, respite, assisted living, independent living and community care. The City of Wodonga Senior Celebrations will be held throughout the month of October, with a range of activities planned including concerts, movies, bus tours, shopping and sport. Estate’s open day festive event WODONGA Gardens Retirement Estate is proud that its open day being held on Saturday 12 October from 11am to 3pm is an official Wodonga Seniors Month Activity. Ruth Kernaghan is putting the finishing touches to a festive event that will showcase the lifestyle opportunities of living in a retirement estate. The open day will feature music by the Grooveyard Hammond Combo,

sausage sizzle and afternoon tea along with wine tasting. Open day visitors will also be able to gain an understanding of the benefits of living in West Wodonga, with information stands from The Daintree Medical Centre and Nordcon. A Harvey Norman furnished Acacia display villa will also be launched to demonstrate what an incoming resident could purchase with one of the

limited $5000 move-in vouchers. Ruth is especially thrilled that Tom Gannon will be at the Open Day. Tom and Michael Gannon, directors of the Gannon Lifestyle Group, believe passionately that what makes their estates so special is that the values of “friends, lifestyle and security are at the heart of every Gannon community. Ruth says Tom is looking forward to attending the open day to highlight

the features and lifestyle that makes a Gannon Lifestyle Estate so special. Tom says that Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate focuses on making retirement as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Home maintenance and gardening are taken care of by trusted on-site staff, giving residents more time to enjoy the wide range of social events and activities on offer. Security is also

a key consideration and each estate has gated entry and 24-hour monitoring, so residents have peace of mind that their home is always well looked after, which is ideal for retirees who love to travel. So come along to the Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate Open Day to find out more about a lifestyle just waiting for you!

Holiday homes WITH the weather getting warmer, it may be tempting to consider buying a holiday home in picturesque coastal towns such as Lorne, Mornington, or Sorrento. Many people purchase holiday homes for personal reasons but some are also attracted to the investment potential of such a decision. Holiday homes are different from a standard residential property that you can lease out for a more long-term basis. If you are looking to set up your holiday home as an investment, there are a few things you should consider. Holiday homes can be expensive. The average house price in popular holiday areas is $591,000 in the June quarter of 2013. This is more expensive than the metropoli-

tan median house price of $562,000 despite many of these areas being located in the outer or regional suburbs. Many holiday homes are located in seasonally popular areas. Take for example the popular coastal town of Sorrento. According to the 2011 Census, taken in the offpeak period in August, around 78 per cent of homes were vacant. You will need to account for the possibility that there can be long periods of vacancy for your holiday home. The maintenance costs can be higher than a standard residential investment. Holiday homes need to appeal to short-term visitors so it may have to compete with hotel accommodation in the area. That is why many holiday homes come fully furnished.

Kart comp heats up By KRYSTEN MANUEL

DRIVERS from seven to 60 made the most of their club day last Saturday as the ROTAX Pro Tour loomed. “It was almost a perfect weekend for the kart racing,” Albury Wodonga Go Kart Club President John Reynolds said. “We had some pretty intense competition, especially at the front of the field because we’re getting close to the end of the club championship which finishes in November. It was a particularly well-run weekend with very little incident. “At the end of October we’re actually having a big national meeting, the ROTAX Club Tour. It’s six rounds nationally and all the best

cars in Australia will be here competing that weekend.” Mr Reynolds said the club would put up some fantastic competition for ROTAX, held on 26 and 27 October at the Sheathers Road track. “One of our rookie competitors, Zachary Best, he’s leading the club championship and when he travels away for bigger meetings he does very well, so he’s one of our up and coming potential race-car drivers,” Mr Reynolds said. “In rookies, Miranda Clark is getting better and better to the point where she’s almost challenging the boys, and we also have Hayley Pilfoot, she’s a senior and is actually attending the Wodonga TAFE mo-

torsport course and she mixes it with the blokes all the time. “It’s one of the few sports where girls compete against guys on an equal footing.” The Albury Wodonga Kart Club had its first meeting back in 1992 and caters for all ages (from seven years old) and weight classes. “We have the cadets who are seven to 10 years, rookies from 10 - 12 years, juniors from 12-16 with different weight divisions, and seniors with their different weight divisions and engine performance levels. “All the members own their own equipment, to be involved in the sport you have to have your own car. “And we have a number of fami-

lies that compete. On the weekend we had a mother, daughter and son competing. There was a father with his two sons competing, so there’s definitely a lot of family involvement.” Mr Reynolds encourages as much family involvement in the club as possible, having involved his sons from a young age as well. “I’ve always been involved in motorsport,” he said. “I used to compete myself and I got involved with the car club when it first started with my sons. “My sons are still involved in motor racing, my eldest still races cars and my younger son races V8 Supercars, so he’s made a career out of it.”

THE inaugural Albury Wodonga Memory Walk and Jog will be held on Sunday 6 October at Sumsion Gardens (Belvoir Park), Wodonga. General manager of Bupa Wodonga, Linda Hudec says Memory Walk and Jog is a wonderful community event that supports people living with dementia, their family and carers. “There are approximately 5000 people living with dementia in the Albury Wodonga area, and we see the effects of it every day,” she said. “We’re proud to say that it was the enthusiasm of local carers that has led to discussions with Alzheimer’s Australia, and ultimately to the event being run here this year. We’re delighted to have Memory Walk and Jog in Albury Wodonga and to be supporting Alzheimer’s Australia in the work they’re doing in the area. “We’re really hoping the community will get behind the event by signing up and taking part. We hope to raise more than $50,000 to help people living with dementia in our local area.” Participants will be able to take part in a 2km walk, a 5km walk or jog or a 12km run. Teams of four people are also invited to enter the 12km team challenge. The team challenge is ideal for sporting groups and those with a competitive nature. There are a range of distances designed to include everyone, regardless of speed or age. All funds raised will stay in Albury Wodonga to assist Alzheimer’s Australia provide a variety of services to support local people living with dementia, their carers and families. Alzheimer’s Australia is the charity for people with dementia and their families and carers. As the peak body, it provides advocacy, support services, education and information. More than 320,000 people have dementia in Australia. This number is projected to reach more than half a million by 2030. Dementia is the third leading cause of death in Australia and there is no cure. For more information go to www.memorywalk.com.au/alburywodonga The 2013 Albury Wodonga Memory Walk and Jog is being held with the support of the Albury Wodonga Triathlon Club and is proudly supported by Bupa aged care.
