Poll cyber war By DANNY BUTTLER

SOPHIE Mirabella has blamed the Labor Party for personally abusive Twitter comments directed towards her. As polling day approaches, the battle between Liberal candidate Ms Mirabella and Independent challenger Cathy McGowan has continued to heat up. Twitter postings seen by the Albury Wodonga News Weekly have ranged from spiteful to bizarre. There is no suggestion by Albury Wodonga News Weekly that any posts have originated from people associated with any candidate. “Go Cathy, high time the constituents of INDI had a rep who cared about them, not a self-interested ignoramus,” one tweet read. Another hoped Ms McGowan would “hopefully unseat the strange and vicious Sophie Mirabella”. A cryptic tweet warned that “Mirabella door knocking in Indi. Don’t let your dad answer the door.” Another tweet said that “reports coming in of dozens of Cathy yard signs being stolen or vandalised over the past 24 hours. Watch out as opponents get nasty.” When asked about the tweets, Ms Mirabella accused Labor of using dirty tricks as part of a campaign to support Ms McGowan. “Labor has decided that it can’t win the seat and has thrown its support and money behind an Independent candidate,” Ms Mirabella said. Presented by the City of Wodonga

“Some of the tactics and vitriol are distasteful, but frankly, I am staying focused on my own positive campaign.” Albury Wodonga News Weekly rang Labor candidate Robyn Walsh, but she did not respond. Regardless of the social media sledging, Monash University political scientist Nick Economou believes Ms Mirabella, who holds a 10 per cent margin, will retain the seat. “Conventional political science tells us that the official party candidate will in all likelihood prevail,” he said.

“So not withstanding her capacity to rub people up the wrong way, I think Mirabella will win, simply because she is the Liberal candidate.” Dr Economou believes that the attention being paid to the McGowan campaign is unlikely to translate to polling day votes. “McGowan’s political campaign looks like it has momentum and it probably has, but 400 people turning up to a town hall meeting might be exciting, but there are 90,000 voters in Indi.

Beauty of Calperum

Strap yourself in

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

“WHEN I first came out here I would have described it as a barren, dry, flat sandpit, Rhiannon Oates said. “But I’m seeing more beauty and diversity all the time, particularly at this time of year because the Mallees are beginning to flower. It’s very beautiful countryside, I love it out here. Ms Oates is a graduate of environmental management and ecology at the Wodonga campus of La Trobe University and is halfway through her internship at Calperum Station in outback South Australia - the opportunity of a lifetime for any graduating student. The 21-year-old has been on the station since 25 February this year and will be staying on until February 2014, but hopes to be offered a permanent position. The move has been a big change for Ms Oates who grew up in Barnawartha and has never lived out of home. “At first it was a bit of a culture shock, she said. “Not only is it different because I’m living out of home for the first time, but the environment is also different. In Wodonga it’s a lot greener and there’s hills, but here it’s so flat, very dry and the trees are very small. Most of the trees are mallee trees which are like a short eucalyptus species with branches that come from the ground. It’s growing on me, definitely! “Living at the station is pretty good because it is only a 20-minute drive to town and there are a couple of other people that live out here. “I knew it would be a new lot of experiences and a new adventure so I was really keen to come out, and the work here is really great - they’re making a real difference to the environment. Calperum Station is a 300,000 hectare pastoral lease in South Australia that’s managed for conservation purposes by the Australian Landscape Trust with support from the Federal Government.

Rhiannon Oates on Calperum Station, South Australia. The mallee scrubland on the station is one of the most endangered vegetation types in the world. “We have the mallee scrubland and two wetlands that we’re trying to restore. It’s an old farming property and they grazed thousands of sheep up here. They were removed in about 1993 and are now trying to restore function to ecosystems because a lot of degradation has happened - there’s a lot of erosion and a lot of vegetation has been removed. One of the main problems with the wetlands is the increase of salinity. In terms of work, Ms Oates does different

tasks according to the time of year, including leading volunteer groups. “At the moment a typical day would be me turning up to work and talking to the senior ecologist Dr Peter Cale - he lays out what we’re going to be doing for the day, like weeding and pulling down old fences and tree planting which is our primary activity at the moment. “We have lots of volunteer groups coming through here at the moment so I could also be supervising the volunteers. I do a bit of night work as well, doing surveys and data collecting - we’ll be looking at possums soon. La Trobe sends students out to Calperum on field trips every second year. At this year’s field trip to Calperum, Rhiannon acted as a leader of the current student group during their visit to the station, with many students leaving inspired and excited by her example.

PHAR LAP and his famous strapper Tommy Woodcock will be celebrated in a remarkable Australian first exhibition on the opening night of Write Around the Murray (WAM). Strapper is a unique ‘living museum’ experience that features actual recordings of Tommy Woodcock and his stories about working with Phar Lap. The archival recordings will be used to create a unique performance where music and poetry combine to tell the story of Tommy Woodcock and his relationship with Phar Lap. It will be capped off with a performance by Yarrawonga horse handler Wayne Hinchliffe and his horse Perkins. Mr Hinchliffe grew up with Mr Woodcock and learned his horsemanship from one of Australia’s great trainers. The exhibition officially launches the WAM festival and includes rare photographs of Phar Lap’s race days and his iconic victories, Phar Lap’s leather travelling boots and blanket, the hat worn by Tommy Woodcock when training Phar Lap in the 1920s and ’30s, jockeys’ weights used during Phar Lap’s race days, memorabilia from the ship that transported Phar Lap from Australia to America for his triumphant tour and a saddle worn by Reckless, the horse also trained by Woodcock which won the Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane Cups and ran second in the Melbourne Cup in 1977. “They say that Phar Lap wouldn’t take food from anyone but Tommy, and before big races Tommy would sleep outside Phar Lap’s stable, WAM festival co-ordinator Ann-maree Ellis said. Mr Woodcock worked with Phar Lap during his peak in the 1920s and ’30s preparing him for major race events. Mr Woodcock was posthumously inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2012 recognising his distinguished career working with Australian racehorses. Former Bushwhackers Band member Jan ‘Yarn’ Wositzky, armed with an archive of recordings and a banjo, truly brings the story of Tommy Woodcock and Phar Lap to life. The Strapper’s official opening is today at 6pm at the Albury LibraryMuseum.

Shots fired ALBURY Police are continuing to investigate a shooting incident that occurred in Lavington on Monday afternoon. It is alleged that two men and a woman entered the Jason Court unit and confronted the occupants. One of the men was armed with a firearm and fired shots into the ceiling of the unit before fleeing. It is alleged that the people involved are known to each other. No-one was injured from the discharge of the firearm. Around 4pm Tuesday, police from Albury have arrested a 25-yearold Lavington woman in connection with the incident. Police will continue to conduct investigations into the matter and have urged the other men involved to come forward and contact Albury Detectives. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. – Krysten Manuel

Veterans stand tall By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY was encouraged to remember, celebrate and educate at the annual 2/23rd Battalion functions last weekend. Among the myriad of special guests and attendees were four members of the battalion. Aged in their nineties, the men were pleased to attend the Saturday morning wreath-laying at the Albury War Memorial. “It’s to remember those blokes who didn’t come back, and also those blokes who did,” one member, Bob Iskov from Wangaratta said. “There’s so many sad stories of war. I knew a bloke who was in another battalion who was captured by the Japs and killed on the Kokoda Track and six months later his wife had a son. She never married again - it’s really sad. “I also had a bloke drop dead beside me on the Kokoda Track - bullet through the heart. He’d been married four months. “It’s a good occasion to hark back to those days and the mates we had, the good times as well as some of the tough times.” Mr Iskov spent five years in the army, beginning when he was just 19 years old. Over the past year, Mr Iskov went to New Guinea as one of eight veterans and attended several services over the week. “We went to the cemetery where there’s 2/23rd Batallion blokes,” he said. “There were over 3000 Australians there. It was sad to see rows and rows of white headstones - blokes from 19 to 27 years old,

and you realise you managed to survive and come home and hopefully some of the things we fought for were worthwhile.” Albury councillor and president of the Albury RSL Graham Docksey had a large hand in organising the weekend, saying it was fantastic to see the attendance of the director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson. “There were two parts to the weekend,” Cr Docksey said. “There was the wreath-laying at the Albury War Memorial which I think was quite special because we had four members of the 2/23rd Battalion there. “It was also nice having Brendan Nelson there - at lunchtime he spoke very significantly about the 2/23rd and about his future directions of the War Memorial. He’s a very passionate thinker. “The real keystone to the whole event was on the Sunday, the dedication of the chapel within St Matthews. We invited the schools to send some representation from captains because they are our future and I think it’s very important they learn the history of those people that fought for our country and how we have our democracy and freedom as it is today. “Don’t take it for granted freedom is not free. “We were in a diverse crowd there, we had the older church members there, we had those that had a connection to the 2/23rd and we had the Governor, Brendan Nelson and the Mayor, the four men from the 2/23rd, it was just a fabulous day.”

Joining cancer fight By KRYSTEN MANUEL AFTER four months of planning, the St Matthews Relay For Life Community Variety Concert is on this Sunday, showcasing some fantastic Border talent and all for a great cause. “We’ve had so much help because it’s for cancer, and that’s why we will have such a good crowd,” organiser Jenny Price said. “My twin sister Lyn lost her husband six years ago to cancer and still struggles with the loss. Lyn has all her sons coming home from Sydney - they’re doing this for Bruce. “We both lost our father to cancer. We were only five years old when he died - I hated growing up without a father. “It just hits so many people. You can light up a candle if you want and we want everyone wearing bright happy clothes because it’s a happy event. Anyone who has had a loss can come and share it with a friend.” The event will feature artists young and old, beginning with violinist Kaori Sparks. Among the artists to follow are eight grade one and two boys from the Jan Skinner School of Speech and Drama, the stars of Grease - Dianne Robinson and Aaron Bykerk, juggling and unicycling from Matthew Winnel, and award winning trumpet player Toli Kolisnyk to perform Misty.

Sarah Winnel, associate priest of St Matthews Father Alan Kelo and Toli Kolisnyk have donated their time and talents to the upcoming Relay For Life Concert.

Cod and crayfish season RECREATIONAL anglers are being reminded that the closed season for Murray cod and spiny freshwater crayfish began on Sunday. Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Ross McGowan, said the three-month closure for Murray cod provided the species with a chance to breed and contribute to future native fish stocks. “Anglers who take Murray cod during the closed season face an on-the spot fine of $433 or a court appearance if the matter is more serious,” Mr McGowan said. “The Murray cod season reopens to fishing on 1 December and will be keenly anticipated by freshwater anglers right across Victoria. “Many anglers will target Murray cod in waters we have stocked with fingerlings grown at our Snobs Creek hatchery, near Eildon. “Our native fish stocking program, which released more than one million Murray cod last summer, is funded by fishing licence fees and the State Government’s $16 million recreational fishing initiative. “The closed season for spiny freshwater crayfish is longer and anglers will need to wait until 1 June 2014 to pursue them again,” Mr McGowan said. For more information about freshwater closed seasons check the recreational fishing guide at www. depi.vic.gov.au/fisheriesor collect a free copy from your local tackle store or DEPI office.

“We have really strong performers from the community participating,” Ms Prince said. “The place will be plastered in balloons and decorations - everything in purple and yellow, we have 10 lucky doors and 12 raffles, we even have a mascot - a little dog with a purple and yellow T-shirt. “It’s just going to be a beautiful community event for and from all ages.” Ms Prince said she had been blown away by the generosity of the community in the preparation of this event, among them are Safeway and Coles for donating items for the afternoon tea and Albury McDonalds for donating the use of their juice machine and 50 meals for the performers after the show. “We can’t thank the people of Albury Wodonga enough for everything they’ve donated for the concert,” she said. “There’s a lot of good people out there. I couldn’t believe that when I asked for something, no one said no! That’s how good people are.” The Relay for Life concert is also expecting special guests, including Member for Albury Greg Aplin and Albury Mayor Patricia Gould. LABOR WANTS AN INDEPENDENT TO WIN INDI. Labor has been caught using the voice of an Independent, Tony Windsor, in negative robotic phone calls against the Liberals in Indi. Labor wants an Independent to win Indi. Labor knows they can’t win in Indi so they want an Independent to win. That’s why they’re paying for these robotic phone calls and are giving an Independent their preferences. Labor desperately wants you to vote for an Independent. Remember, rural Independents helped install a Labor Government that introduced the carbon tax, increased our cost of living, increased debt and weakened our borders. We need a strong, stable government, not more chaos.

An Independent CAN’T scrap the carbon tax, build a stronger economy, reduce cost of living pressures or stop the boats. But an Independent CAN help return the Rudd Labor Government.

Gracie’s family finds a home Urgent call

for foster carers

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

NINE healthy kelpie puppies are almost ready to find homes thanks to the Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue (AWAR) team who saved their mother, Gracie, who was found heavily pregnant and emaciated. Gracie was removed from the pound under Duty of Care and gave birth 10 days later – a surprise for AWAR president Dallas Sargeant and office manager Stacey Swan, who have cared for the puppies since. “I first met Gracie in the pound when she was heavily pregnant,” Ms Sargeant said. “She appeared to be either dumped or had wandered off somewhere around Splitters Creek. A couple of very caring residents found her and a couple have actually put their names down to adopt her, so we will follow that up when she’s fit enough. “The puppies were all healthy because even though Gracie was starved, everything goes to the pups. Gracie did not put on weight and when they got to three weeks old she was just not coping physically or mentally – she started walking away from them. “So I picked up five and took them to my place and they were able to start feeding on their own. They ate but they were missing their mum. “Gracie coped really well, she started feeding them again. “I went through nine litres of milk in the first week and that was only for five

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

AWAR’s Stacey Swan and Dallas Sargeant have taken on the massive task of raising nine puppies which are nearly ready to be housed. pups, so you can imagine what they were drawing out of her. Gracie has started to put on weight now all the pups are off her and they’ll go to homes in the next two weeks.” Ms Swan is now looking after all nine puppies, which eat their way through 18 cups of dry food a day. “We’re desperate for dry puppy food at the moment,” she said.

“They’ve all had their first vaccinations, they’re due for their second vaccinations. Normally our vet fee covers one vaccination and one desexing, so this will be a bit more. We’re going to be a bit behind.” Todds Tasty Treats will be having an afternoon to raise awareness about the work of AWAR and their need for donations on Wednesday 11

September from 1-4pm with guest stars Gracie and her nine puppies. “We rely heavily on monetary donations and donations of dry food,” Ms Sargeant said. “People give us wet food and they mean well but we really can’t use it. It goes through dogs like nobody’s business and can make the dogs sick if they’re not used to it.”

FOSTER Care at Upper Murray Family Care (UMFC) is desperate for more foster carers to come on board and is holding an open door information session. “Currently we provide care for about 60 kids a night in the region – we have seven local government areas,” UMFC specialist carer recruitment assessment and training officer Jeanine Aughey said. “We just don’t have enough carers for the amount of children that require care. “Our slogan is ‘foster carers come from all walks of life, what’s stopping you?’ People can just pop in and ask questions, they’re not signing up to give care for the next 10 years of their life, it’s just about seeing if it’s right for them.” Ms Aughey said children who missed out on foster carers were sent away from the area or were put in transitional accommodation, which was far from ideal. UMFC is looking to recruit as many varied people as possible and can expect the benefits of being a foster carer to extend past the child. “We’re looking for as many carers as possible,” Ms Aughey said. “If we get single, married, samesex couples with different interests they can offer different things to children. The bigger the pool the more likely the children are to go to carers that are matched to what they need, and the less trauma for children.

We just don’t have enough carers for the amount of children that require care… Jeanine Aughey

“Foster carers are giving something back, providing kids with stability and role models that sometimes they don’t have. It allows them to grow and learn about themselves, that’s the feedback we get from carers. “There are also a lot of benefits for the children of the carers. They learn that not all the kids get the same things as they do, that others need support as well. A lot of the family carers come from the perspective of providing for their kids. “We also get a lot of single carers wanting playmates for their kids.” UMFC are holding a morning tea on Thursday 12 September at 10.30am in the UMFC meeting room - suite 6, 91 Hume Street Wodonga. Bill Tilley will be in attendance. The open door information Session for potential foster carers is on Wednesday 18 September from 4pm-7pm at UMFC. For details, call 6055 8000.

Golf with heart By KRYSTEN MANUEL

HEART Support Australia’s Albury Wodonga branch is having its annual golf day this Friday to raise money for the organisation and to donate to the cardiac rehabilitation departments at Albury and Wodonga Health Services. The men’s and ladies’ stableford event will go off with a shotgun start at 8.30 with an entry fee of $16 which includes lunch. “At the end of the day we have prizes for first and second in each grade, we run a raffle and we have the staff coming from Albury and Wodonga health services to do free health checks,” secretary/ treasurer of Albury Wodonga branch Rosemary Every said.

Heart Support Australia is run by people who have heart conditions and their carers and provides support during and after for people who have had a heart event. “A lot of our members are put in contact with us through the rehabilitation program at the hospitals so we can support them,” Ms Every said. “If we know someone is heading to Melbourne for an operation we have trained people they can chat to so the volunteer can talk them through what they can expect from a patient point of view. “When they come back we encourage them to make healthy lifestyle changes so they don’t have a recurring event.” Ms Every is part of Heart

Support Australia due to her husband, who had a heart attack 22 years ago when he was just 37. General meetings are held on the second Wednesday bi-monthly at the K.D. Watson building in Albury Showgrounds, with the next meeting on 9 October. Walking groups are also available, with an indoor walk at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre on Thursday mornings commencing at 8.15am. The outdoor walk is on Thursday mornings at 9 am from Hovell Tree Park, with most members using Nordic poles to increase their upper body workout. Each walk ends with a social morning tea. To register for the golf day, call 6026 5822.

It’s all about cars By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THE Border Christian College (BCC) Autofest is back and bigger than ever, with all proceeds going to Carevan, a cause close to the heart of BCC. The event was eagerly received last year, but having been in the works since January, this year’s event promises to be jam-packed with a variety of food stalls, displays, prizes and high quality cars on show. “The reason I decided to do this is because the school needs support to grow and I thought ‘what better way than to organise something like this’, organiser Tony Smead said. “One of the things we’re trying to do is aim at motoring education, reaching out to the kids and heightening their awareness for road safety. The event is currently supported by organisations such as Albury City’s Road Safe Programs, driver education from driving

schools, road safety programs including Don’t TXT N Drive, and tertiary education provided by Wodonga TAFE’s Motorsport Training Australia and Albury TAFE. “We also have Wodonga and Albury TAFE coming along, so it’s a good chance to give the kids an insight into careers as well. “We hope to see many cars from members of local clubs and individual owners, to keep the event attractive to the wonderful people who bring their cars that support our event. We will be running a people’s choice award and car owners will be in the running to win one of three unique and fantastic trophies. BCC Autofest is an event created to help promote the school, in particular the Thurgoona community. The school educates approximately 120 students from pre-kinder through to Year 12, compared to the average school that generally

caters for about 500 to 700 students. Students of BCC, with the support of Woolworths Thurgoona, prepare fresh meals that are distributed by the Carevan Foundation to the homeless and less fortunate members of the community as needed, which is why BCC have chosen to donate 100 per cent of the profits to Carevan. “One of the things we’re proud to be part of is running a charity auction throughout the day - there have been some extremely generous donations from some wonderful businesses around the Border, Mr Smead said. “Kevin Poulton (105.7 The River Radio Host) is our MC and auctioneer, so it should be an exciting part of the event. The BCC Autofest is on Sunday 8 September from 9am-3pm at The Border Christian College. Adults are $5, kids under 12 free. For more information, visit www.alburybcc.nsw.edu.au

Foot & Leg Facts with Dr Marni Gray, Sports Podiatrist

Foot and leg breakthrough FOOT and leg pain and injuries are common among people of all ages and lifestyles. In fact, most people will suffer some form of foot or leg pain in their lives. The most common are heel pain (commonly referred to as plantar fasciitis), knee pain, work and sports injuries, toe and foot fractures, bunions, and arch and shin pain. Most foot and leg pain is either a result of an injury from a particular incident or accident, overuse or faulty biomechanics of the foot and ankle. Other factors can contribute, such as sudden increases in physical activity, sudden or excessive weight gain due to pregnancy or obesity, or postural issues affecting other parts of the body like the back, knee, hip or leg. There are a variety of treatments that can assist with these issues but the one that stands

out is ‘prolotherapy’ – natural regenerative injection therapy. It‘s one of the most promising medically researched treatments for soft tissue repair and pain relief currently available. These natural glucose and anaesthetic solutions assist the body’s natural healing mechanisms. As a result there is increased joint, ligament, and tendon stability, chronic joint pain is relieved and mobility increased. Prolotherapy is a quick, easy, safe, natural and minimally invasive treatment that is fast acting, versatile and very cost effective. Preferable to cortisone, anti-inflammatory medication and shockwave therapy, it doesn’t have their negative side effects, can be effective for both new and old injuries and be an alternative to surgery in many cases. With the assistance of prolotherapy, they’ve helped athletes

return to professional sport, relieved pain in people who have suffered for years, and promoted healing and increased mobility in people who have been previously told there is nothing that can be done for them. They also combine prolotherapy, when required, with nutritional therapy, addressing structural issues and faulty biomechanics, stretching and strengthening programs to support healing and prevent reoccurring symptoms and concerns. At Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, working to find and address what caused your injury, pain or concern to begin is a very important part of their treatment plans and successful, long-term patient outcomes. If you have foot or leg pain, new or old injuries or degenerative issues, call for an appointment to see if they can assist. Phone 1300 328 300.

Letters She’s pro choice

AS AN aspirant member of Federal Parliament, “in with a good chance”, it was disturbing to hear the Independent for Indi Cathy McGowan describe herself as “pro choice” at the recent meet the candidates forum in Wodonga. And baffling to learn she believes “abortion has no place in parliament”. To where else can unborn children look for protection? The Victorian Egg Board? This is nonsense. The first responsibility of government is to protect human life. Abortion related legislation is both a state and federal issue. Abortion funding, local and overseas, is a federal matter. The importation of the abortifacient drug RU486 and its monitoring is the responsibility of the Federal Minister for Health. The practice of human embryo experimentation and human cloning is reviewed by Federal Parliament. These are human rights issues. The very “human rights” listed on page 4 of Ms McGowan’s Voice 4 Indi manifesto. Given thousands of Victorians assemble in Melbourne every October to mourn the 2008 passage of this state’s infamous abortion legislation, it would have to have been a very selective grouping around the Voice 4 Indi’s 55 kitchen table conversations, for the first human right, the right to life, not to have been mentioned. But will Cathy listen and be a voice for Indi’s unborn children? Denise M. Cameron President, Pro Life Victoria, Albury.

Indi’s chance

THE voters of Indi have had a unique opportunity to be exposed to one of the most concerted election campaigns ever seen in a regional electorate. The comments by two retiring Independent members of the current parliament set a tone which was picked up by the Fairfax Press and the government funded radio which appeared to have the single objective of discrediting the current member of Indi. One of the great institutions we enjoy in our great country is the basic right of freedom of speech and as electors we have a right to expect those who control the media to provide a balanced view of the information we may use in making a decision on how we cast our vote. On any examination we have not been afford-

ed this balanced view, and I take this opportunity to make the following points for your readers’ consideration. Independents are exactly that - the only way they can make any contribution to the decisionmaking process at any level of government is the existence of a hung parliament, and that should be understood when considering the contribution an Independent can make for the electorate. If the retiring Independents were so valuable to their respective electorates, how come they are not sponsoring and mentoring another person to follow in their footsteps - we all know why, they were the beneficiaries of the election result three years ago and used that to their personal benefit, any benefit to their electorate was a by-product of their own perceived importance. The major parties have put on the table the policies that will shape our future for the next three years. What have the Independents put forward – certainly nothing that I have ever seen detailed. Elections are not a popularity contest, they are about having a representative who is actually in a position to make a difference to our electorate, Indi already has that person in place, I am confident that the voters of Indi will understand that logic when they cast their vote this Saturday. Graeme Welsh, Wodonga.

Independent wilderness

THIS Saturday we have an election to decide our government in the Commonwealth Parliament. The Commonwealth Government responsibilities include: managing the economy, defence, foreign affairs, foreign aid, protecting our borders, and industrial relations. An Independent member of parliament has almost no voice in these important areas. An Independent member would be one vote out of 150 members of parliament in the House of Representatives and would be powerless and unable to influence decisions. By contrast a vote for the dynamic duo of Sophie Mirabella (Indi) and Sussan Ley (Farrar) who, as important members of the Government and Cabinet, are able to provide a better future for our families. Lloyd Deane Wodonga.

GIVE IT A TRY By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE residents at Murray Gardens live an enviable lifestyle, particularly those in serviced apartments, and right now you can come and try for just $55 a night! “Start enjoying your life, co-manager Anne Jack said. “Retirement is not the end, it’s actually the beginning of a really active life. Residents in serviced apartments enjoy nutritious, delicious chef prepared meals, weekly apartment cleaning and linen changes, a hair salon, library, full use of village facilities, personal care services (if desired), 24-hour emergency care and a very full calendar of activities and social events. “There are a lot of stigmas associated with getting older, like loneliness and boredom, co-manager Chiquita Walsh said. “You come in here and you don’t have that. You don’t have to get old and be lonely and lack companionship - it’s all here. “Come to a Murray Gardens serviced apartment and you’ll start to live again. Norma Calvert lives in assisted living and said she loved the security, location and social activity options available to her. “I think we have a lovely set-up, she said. “We have beautiful gardens and it’s quiet. You haven’t got the hustle and bustle of traffic. I think we have an ideal spot! “Everyday there’s something on - cards, games and line-dancing. You can be as private or social as you like.

“I feel very safe, never intimidated. I love the security we have here. We have an alarm button, so if you need anything urgently all you have to do is press it and they come. Margaret Russell moved to Murray Gardens 10 years ago and urges prospective residents to get in and see the difference for themselves. “I’ve never been happier than when I moved here, she said. “There’s so much to do, as much as you want to, it’s wonderful! Our families are all pleased for us to be here. “Just don’t leave it too late. Ms Jack agrees prospective residents should start planning now, using a unique option where managers will actually assist in the planning process in order to make the transition as smooth as possible. “It’s not about losing your independence, it’s about gaining independence because you’re not reliant on anyone other than the staff here, she said. “Make that decision for yourself while you’re fit and active, plan your future. The people that do that absolutely love it. The only time it can be a negative is when it’s based on that crisis situation - when a partner has died or you become unwell. Having made those decisions earlier on, you don’t have a bumpy transition. Come down to Murray Gardens and witness the sense of community and absolute ease residents live in. Call 6023 3822 or visit www.retireaustralia. com.au for more details.

Murray Gardens co-manager Chiquita Walsh said “once residents get settled here, their only regret is that they didn’t come sooner!

RENTING A SENIORS OPTION WHERE to live is one of the biggest decisions that seniors face. For many people approaching retirement, the decision between keeping the family home, downsizing to a smaller house or unit, or ridding themselves of the stress and expense that can come with home ownership altogether is a difficult one. Renting during retirement can offer the flexibility, freedom and security many seniors are looking for. At Mardross Gardens in Albury our focus is to bring life to community living, making seniors retirement enjoyable, rewarding and peaceful. Mardross Gardens is part of Garden Villages, which consist of 29 villages spread over Australia. Mardross Gardens is architecturally designed, and the village offers safe and comfortable homes nestled among private gardens. With a community centre, leisure facilities and planned activities available, residents have the option to be involved in an active and social community. The rental model gives seniors the freedom to save their nest egg, and not have the added pressure of home ownership. Meal plans and optional services are available, and aim to assist seniors in continuing to be accountable for their own well-being. Mardross Gardens is pet friendly and designed with security in mind. Anne the village manager offers seniors a friendly personalised service and makes sure she is meeting each and every resident’s needs. Anne would be happy to show off her village if any seniors would like a tour of the Mardross Gardens community.

Make retirement easy and enjoyable - move to Mardross Gardens.

GET YOUR MOTORS RUNNIN’ By KRYSTEN MANUEL WESTMONT Aged Care Services is once again inviting the community to Wheels at Westmont - a stunning display of antique motorcycles, heritage cars, classic cars and hot rods. “Last year’s event was a great success,” Westmont chief executive officer Peter de Koeyer said. “We had around 300 people, the weather was fantastic and we were able to show a number of people through our facilities. We’re aiming to attract around 500 people and 50 vehicles this year.”

Rhianna Coleiro, Peter de Koeyer and Chris Boyer welcome you to Wheels on Westmont. tours of the homestead, apartments and villas from 10.30am, and entertainment from local sensation Glenn Starr from 11.45am. Since last year’s event, Westmont has continued to strive for excellence, with over 150 residents calling it home. “We’ve built seven new homes in the last 12 months,” Mr de Koeyer said.

“Our residential aged care facility is full and has a waiting list, our apartments are full and our village is developing. “We’re creating a great community for the older people of the region. The semi-rural outlook attracts a lot of people from the local valleys who aren’t necessarily looking to move into a larger town, but they want to be close to the services a larger town brings.”

Set among the beautiful gardens at Baranduda, Westmont is a community-owned, not-for-profit organisation offering a range of services to the ageing population including residential aged care, respite care, assisted living, independent living and community care. Wheels at Westmont is on Saturday 26 October from 10am to 2pm. For more information, call 6043 9999 or visit www.westmont.org.au

PARENTAL IMPACT ALL Australians with investments in shares, whether directly or indirectly through superannuation, will be slugged to help fund the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme, lobby group for the over-fifties, National Seniors Australia said. It would hit retirees very hard and be seen as a disincentive to self-reliance, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said. On Sunday, the Coalition announced that the scheme would be “fully funded” through a 1.5 per cent levy on around 3,000 companies earning more than $5 million in taxable income. The related reduction in company tax of 1.5 per cent will reduce the franking credits attached to dividends from company shares. Franking credits stop the double taxation of company profits, as the tax paid at company level is passed to the shareholders. This means that shareholders may be liable

for extra tax on company profits and a reduction in their income, for shares held directly or indirectly through superannuation. “It is particularly hard on self-funded or partlyfunded retirees on fixed or even dwindling incomes,” Mr O’Neill said. “Many of these people are struggling to cope with falling returns from cash invested in term deposits and now they are faced with a reduction in the value of franked credits.” Mr O’Neill said it was false economy to put a slug on super to help pay for a party’s preelection promises. “The key message to the Coalition is that this will be a further disincentive to people seeking to be self-reliant and not dependent on the public purse in retirement. “If you’ve worked for years to put money into super or into shares, the last thing you want is the government coming along and dipping their hand into it,” he said.

“The event was thought up by a Westmont staff member and comes as part of the City of Wodonga Senior Celebrations, a festival Westmont looks forward to and participates in annually. “Our residents have shown they love the idea,” Mr de Koeyer said. “Some of them have knowledge of the vehicles, others love looking at the history of the vehicles. “We show antiques right through to customs.” In addition to the impressive line-up of cars this year, the day will also include guided

SO MANY EVENTS MORE than 50 events will be held throughout October as part of the City of Wodonga Senior Celebrations 2013. The action-packed program includes performances by iconic Australian artists Colleen Hewett and Debra Byrne, as well as stories and tunes by rock legends Frankie J. Holden and Wilbur Wilde. It will also incorporate Grease (The Musical), a theatrical performance of Mother and Son, and Caulfield Cup Race Day at the Wodonga Racecourse. This year there will be 30 new events covering a broad range of interests. They include an aged care expo, widow and widowers coffee mornings, movies in The Cube Wodonga Courtyard, community growth bus tour and a bingo bounty. There are also the old favourites such as the popular mystery bus tours, YMCA physical activities, iris flower display and open garden, classic car display and seniors’ shopping bonaza. Wodonga Council’s manager community lifestyle Debbie MacKinlay said the celebrations were an opportunity to recognise the rich contributions of older people within the community. “The senior celebrations are always hugely popular, with a broad range of community groups and organisations getting involved and supporting the program,” she said. “I think that makes a real statement about the contribution of seniors and how much they are valued in the community.” Ms MacKinlay said a highlight of the program would be the performance by Debra Byrne at The Cube Wodonga on Wednesday, 23 October. Ripe celebrates Byrne’s diverse and extensive career spanning more than 40 years.

HEWETT TO OPEN SENIORS EVENT ICONIC Australian performer Colleen Hewett will open the City of Wodonga Senior Celebrations 2013 with a performance at The Cube Wodonga on Tuesday, 1 October. The concert will start at 9.15am with a performance by Wodonga Community Choir, with Hewett taking to the stage from 10am. The concert will conclude at 11am with a morning tea. The Albury/Wodonga Aged Care Expo will then be held at the Senior Citizens’ Centre from 11am to 2pm, with information about what aged care facilities and other related businesses are available in the local region. Seniors who attend the opening should expect a brilliant performance by one of Australia’s most successful and popular artists of the 1970s. Colleen Hewett was just 16 when she first saw television. She knew then that she wanted to be a part of it. She started singing and dancing and at 12, she did her first public performance with a band called The Esquires. As a teenager, she toured Australia with Laurie Allen Revue and at 20, she was a star. Hewett released her first single, ‘Superstar’, and her self-titled album in 1970. She was cast in the smash hit musical Godspell and scored a gold record with ‘Day By Day’, her hit song from the show. She was crowned Queen of Pop two years running. Next were roles in Pippin with John Farnham, and the iconic rock opera Tommy with its all-star cast. At the same time, Hewett and co-star John Farnham also hosted a variety show It’s Magic for a national TV network. She also performed in the stage musical, Return To The Forbidden Planet. While her music career soared in the ’70s, Hewett also acted in loved TV dramas of the day including Homicide, Matlock Police, Truckies, Carson’s Law, Division 4, Young Ramsay, Cop Shop, Prisoner and Flying Doctors. During her time in Truckies, Hewett fell pregnant with her first child and the pregnancy was written into the script. Many of these shows were released worldwide. As her children grew up and her parents grew older, Hewett left the limelight to look after her family, dividing her time between Melbourne, her Fiji hideaway, and her home town of Bendigo. She waited for the right opportunity to return to the stage, and The Boy From Oz was it. Hewett knew Peter Allen from appearing on Bandstand with him. “The producer was rushing me through rehearsal and Peter went to him and said, ‘give her a fair go, there’s plenty of time’,” she said. “I’ve never forgotten his kindness.” Later, while working in Los Angeles, Hewett saw Allen perform live in Hollywood. She was delighted to be offered to play his mother. She played the part to standing ovations around Australia. Alan Jones, an admitted Hewett fan, said her performance was “beyond good” and described her as an “absolute star”. John Laws raved, “Colleen Hewett is brilliant ... her singing almost rips your heart out”. Bookings for Hewett’s performance can be made by phoning The Cube Wodonga booking office on (02) 6022 9311, in person or online at thecubewodonga.com.au/tickets by Wednesday, 25 September.

KICK BACK WITH A MOVIE THE Cube Wodonga Big Screen will feature as part of Wodonga’s senior celebrations for the first time this year. Two movies will be shown for free in The Cube Wodonga Courtyard, along with a performance by the Wodonga Community Choir. The first movie, The Sapphires, will screen on Sunday, 6 October. Set in the heady days of 1968, four young and talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission are discovered by an unlikely talent scout. The all-girl group formed The Sapphires and grasped the chance of a lifetime when they were offered their first real gig - entertaining the US troops in Vietnam. For the girls, a whole new world of sex, war, politics and soul opens up before them. The Sapphires is based on a true story and stars Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy,

Pete Denahy.

Chris O’Dowd, Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens. Still Mine will screen on Sunday, 13 October. A deeply moving love story about a couple in their twilight years, laced with wry humour, Still Mine tells the heartfelt tale of a farmer in rural New Brunswick who comes up against the local authorities when he sets out to build a more suitable house for his ailing wife. Still Mine is based on a true story and stars James Cromwell, Genevieve Bujold and Ronan Rees. These movies are proudly brought to you by The Grange. The Wodonga Community Choir performance will begin at 7pm on both nights, followed by the movies at 7.30pm. Pre-movie dinner is also available from Rubix Café for $10 per person. Bookings are essential on (02) 6056 7737.

LUNCH WITH PETE DENAHY YACKANDANDAH-based musician, Pete Denahy, will entertain crowds at a two-course lunch overlooking the golf course on Tuesday, October 15. The luncheon will be held from noon at The Clubhouse Bar and Bistro, Wodonga as part of the City of Wodonga Senior Celebrations 2013. Denahy covers a lot of ground in the world of entertainment. His musical world extends from packed venues at music festivals to picking tunes under a tree with friends. He manages to juggle a two-headed career of comedy and bluegrass music with successful releases of both on CD in the last three years. Having cut his teeth doing comedy and playing fiddle on the Slim Dusty Show, Pete works at his own show which includes much comedy and also features his fine original songs,

many of which are from his current bluegrass release, “Wishbone Road” which is songs inspired by the gold rush days of his home town of Yackandandah. Denahy is responsible for the youtube song that went viral, ‘Sort Of Dunno Nothin’, or as many know it ‘The Teenager Song’. In July, 2012 he worked at the Melbourne Cabaret Festival alongside Elliot Goblet, Akmal Saleh and Flacco. This year at the country music awards in Tamworth, Denahy won a Golden Guitar for instrumental of the year, coming in ahead of the Davidson Brothers and Tommy Emmanuel. Cost for the luncheon is $10. Bookings are required on (02) 6022 9311 or in person at The Cube Wodonga box office by Wednesday, 9 October.

LEARN TO COOK FOR ONE

The Sapphires. Still Mine.

OLDER residents will learn how to cook quick and easy meals for one as part of senior celebrations in Wodonga this year. Chef and manager of Albury-Wodonga’s Bar Sushi, Gordon Perry, will lead a four-week course specifically designed for people over 50 who live on their own. Classes will be hands-on, with participants sharing in the food they have prepared each week. They will also learn about shopping budgets, storage and freezing, looking up recipes on the internet and where to buy the best fruit and vegetables. The Felltimber Community Centre will present the course in partnership with Rotary Wodonga central and Albury Wodonga Community College. Felltimber Community Centre co-ordinator Lynda Paterson said the classes aimed to put the fun back into food. “It’s about revitalising the interest in food,” she said. “We want seniors to create a culinary delight for themselves and maybe even invite a friend over to enjoy it as well.

Gordon Perry.

“Getting seniors together and getting them networking is also an important part of it.” Classes will be held from noon to 2pm on Tuesdays, 8, 15, 22 and 29 October at the Albury Wodonga Community College. Cost will be $10 per class, with bookings required on (02) 6043 4550.

SENIORS ARE WORKING LONGER NATIONAL Seniors Australia has welcomed a new report which shows a significant increase in the number of people remaining in the workforce for longer. The biennial Australia’s welfare report for 2013 published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released today has found that labour force participation rates have been rising significantly. In the past decade, labour force participation rates for men aged 60-64 rose considerably from 48 per cent in 2002 to 63 per cent in 2012. For men aged 65-69, the rise was from 20 per cent to 34 per cent. Among women aged 60-64, participation rates rose from 25 per cent in 2002 to 44 per cent in 2012. For women aged 65-69, the rise was from 9 per cent to 20 per cent. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said there were a number of reasons why older Australians were choosing to work past retirement age. “It’s a sign of the times that people are staying in the workforce for longer,” O’Neill said. “One reason is that older Australians are much healthier than they used to be, so many want to remain in employment,” he said. “But another factor is that a significant number were hit hard by the global financial crisis, so some are being forced to remain in the workforce to recoup what they lost during that GFC period. “Others are also struggling with the cost of living and worrying if their superannuation will be enough for when they retire.” Mr O’Neill also highlighted that Australian workforce participation rates could be higher.

National Seniors Australia says changes to the healthcare card are a step in the right direction.

“We know that age discrimination in employment continues to be the main barrier for older Australians who are looking for work.” “If Australia had the same mature-age participation as New Zealand, our GDP would be four per cent higher.”

We know that age discrimination in employment continues to be the main barrier for older Australians who are looking for work... Michael O’Neill

The report also found that in 2012, just over half (53 per cent) of employed people aged 65 and over worked part-time, with women more likely to do so than men (69 per cent compared with 45 per cent). The report coincides with the government’s economic statement last week which showed the Commonwealth would save $600 million on the pension over the next four years because people were working for longer instead of claiming benefits.

SENIORS BACK CARD CHANGES CHANGES to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card were a step in the right direction for older Australians, lobby group for the overfifties, National Seniors Australia said today. At his campaign launch in Brisbane, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced $100 million in changes for the card if the Coalition won government. Mr Abbott said the income threshold of $50,000 for singles and $80,000 for couples would rise in line with the consumer price index, giving more self-funded retirees access to cheaper medicines. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the announcement was good news,

but the scope of the changes could go further. “We have been pushing for changes to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card to better reflect 11 years of inflation since the last adjustment in 2001,” he said. “While today’s announcement is welcome, a $10,000 increase in the income thresholds for the card could make a real difference to the lives of seniors, as more of them would become eligible.” Mr O’Neill also said Mr Abbott’s announcement that the private health insurance rebate would be fully restored was also a positive development.

COSTS HIT HOME HARD A NEW video created by over-fifties lobby group National Seniors Australia shows how living costs are hitting pensioners and self-funded retirees on fixed incomes. The video explains how over the five years to March 2013, the CPI rose by 13.4 per cent while the cost of essentials rose by 30 to 80 per cent. “On average, households aged over 50 spend between 25 and 50 per cent of their disposable income on essentials such as groceries, transport, communication and medicine,’’ National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said.

“

Pensioners and self-funded retirees with dwindling investment incomes just don’t have the opportunity to re-build their nest eggs... Michael O’Neill “If you’re a pensioner, a lower income self-funded retiree or a worker on a low income, there isn’t much flexibility

to respond to this increase in the cost of living,’’ he said. “Pensioners and self-funded retirees with dwindling investment incomes just don’t have the opportunity to re-build their nest eggs. “Reduced interest rates are also severely impacting savers, including retirees who remain cautious about other investment options. Mr O’Neill also highlighted the fact that Australians had the fifth highest out-ofpocket healthcare costs in the world, with self-funded retirees hardest hit as rebates and tax offsets were reduced. “It is alarming that research indicates older Australians continue to ’go without basics’ including food, medicines and heating/cooling to make ends meet, he said. In addition, more than 54 per cent of Australians aged over 50 maintain private hospital health insurance. “A recent series of policy changes have increased costs, imposed access barriers for the non-insured and made retention more difficult for others. This election, National Seniors is calling on whichever party wins government to make sustainable cost of living reforms.

They’ll queue for this quintet THE Andrew Dickeson Quintet is coming to Wodonga, in a show sure to impress and humble local musicians. The Sydney Improvised Music Association is pleased to announce the quintet’s tour of regional NSW throughout September. Dickeson’s group is a true all-star aggregation and includes a number of National Jazz Award and Bell Jazz Award winners. Multi-award winning New Zealand saxophonist Roger Manins is featured. Drenched in classic Coltrane/Coleman prose, Manin’s musical voice forges a deep sense of respect for tradition with passionate, New York inspired, consummate ideas and soulful blues. Also joining Andrew on this tour is trumpeter Eamon McNelis, acclaimed bassist Brendan Clarke and one of Australia’s most promising young pianists, Steve Barry. The group released their debut album Weaver of Dreams in 2011 to rave reviews from the Australian and overseas press. “The spirit, the emotion and the swing of Andrew Dickeson - that’s what I enjoy playing with.” - Kirk Lightsey, legendary American jazz pianist. “Dickeson weaves his dreams with flair and imagination, turning this first record into a delight and the beacon for more.” - Jerry D’Souza, All About Jazz. The band has an identifiable sound - strong swinging grooves and interesting arrangements. Creative and polished, this swinging band makes each tune a musical journey for the musicians and the listeners alike. “I knew that it was time to make a musical statement of my own and to present music with my ’fingerprint’ on it,” bandleader Andrew Dickeson said. “I could hear this band in my mind long before it was formed, and I felt that it would be something special ... I chose musicians who could create the sound and feeling I aimed for, and they’ve responded beautifully”. Since launching his quintet in 2011, drummer Andrew Dickeson’s profile as a bandleader has grown considerably. He is one of the most experienced drummers on the Australian jazz scene whose credits include working with international greats Lee Konitz, Kirk Lightsey and Johnny Griffin and Australian icons Ber-

Seeing Red 2 without seeing Red MOVIE: Red 2 DURATION: 116 minutes STARRING: Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins. DIRECTOR: Dean Parisot HAVING not seen Red, Red 2 was a surprisingly easy film to walk into not knowing the characters and their history - which is always a good thing. A solid plot, action-packed and funny (with only a few lame moments) made for a decent film, but an allstar cast (with the exception of MaryLouise Parker’s infuriating abomination of a character) seriously upped

the ante for me. Red 2 begins with retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses as he reunites with his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a nuclear device that could bring the world to its knees. To succeed, the team will need to get past assassins from all angles, ruthless terrorists and one particularly power-crazed government official, all eager to get their hands on the nextgeneration weapon. In a mission that takes the group across the globe, the team must tap into their talents in order to locate and safely destroy the weapon. The team travels to Paris, London

and Moscow, making for an interesting but needed change of scenery in order to break up the monotonous pattern of fight, laugh, surprise, kill. John Malkovich and Anthony Hopkins played their roles without fault. Bruce Willis left a lot to be desired and, as one member of the audience so aptly put it, “Mary-Loise Parker’s character should have been killed off for this movie.” Judging from the hearty bellows of laughter around me, I’m guessing Red fans will thoroughly appreciate this film.

HSC spectacular By KRYSTEN MANUEL

MUSIC and drama performances, visual art and woodwork by the Year 12 students of Xavier High School were on display last Wednesday in a spectacular annual showing of their HSC works. “Tonight is basically the hallmark of their time in creative arts or design and technology (DAT),” visual art teacher Louise Azzi said. “It’s beautiful for them to see the culmination of all their works. It’s become a tradition now and something we all look forward to.” The night began with proud parents, siblings and friends making their way through the stunning works of visual art and DAT pieces - an exhibition wor-

thy of professional standing. One piece that stood out in particular was an enormous altar produced by the Year 12 DAT students and their subject co-ordinator, Mr Peter Williams. “This altar was their idea,” he said. “It was made from all the timber in the rafters in the old music room that was demolished to make way for the new admin building. The students designed it and I steered them along the way. “The front is the school crest and they decided they wanted to make that from individual pieces of timber. It’s as hard as it looks and they all had a hand in that. “It all comes apart and packs

flat onto a trolley the students built and it slides in under the stage - They can pull it out and assemble it in under four minutes! It will be used four or five times a year for liturgies and masses.” Mr Williams said he was lucky to have such a wonderfully innovative group to teach. “They’ve worked very very hard,” he said. “One of the things I like about this particular group is how well they’ve collaborated, worked together and supported each other.” Drama and music performances were also showcased on the night and had the audience wide-eyed at the talent displayed before them, followed by a roaring applause.

Top rental yield suburbs

Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

Settle on the commission REAL estate agents generally charge a commission for selling a property. This means that they must sell your home in accordance with the contract, known as a sales or auction authority. If your property does not sell, you do not pay commission, although you will have to pay advertising and other agreed expenses. Real estate is one of the few professions were consumers pay on the successful result, and the REIV is regularly asked whether there is a ‘standard’ commission for selling a property in Victoria. There is no ‘standard commission’ rate in Victoria, the

commission amount is negotiable between the vendor and agent and once agreed it is recorded in the sale authority you sign. In some cases the commission is a flat percentage fee and in other cases it is a sliding scale with the agent receiving a higher percentage the higher the sale price. Your agent must include a dollar figure on the authority of sale to provide you with an estimate of the commission you are likely to have to pay. If you are considering selling your property, it is advisable to seek quotes from at least three REIV estate agents members, before you make

highest rental yield suburbs are located in regional Victoria: Wendouree, Horsham, and Portland. A four-bedroom house in Wendouree (Ballarat) can provide a rental return of seven per cent based on a median price of $270,000 and a weekly rent of $365. A three-bedroom house in Horsham can return 6.9 per cent with a median price of $193,000 and average weekly rent of $255. A three bedroom house in Portland can return 6.8 per cent with a median price of $182,500 and average weekly rent of $240. You will need to look at more than just the rental yield when you are deciding on your purchase. It does, however, provide a good starting point in the search for the right property investment for you.

your decision and you should base your choice on the entire service offered, not just on the commission. Surveys conducted on behalf of the REIV indicate prospective sellers choose their selling agent based on more factors than just the commission or the estimated selling price. Important considerations are real estate agent’s knowledge of the local market, the marketing plan proposed and most important their reputation. Always ask the agents for recent customers you can contact for references of their service.

INVESTORS use a variety of measures to evaluate the performance of their real estate investment. One of the measures is the “gross rental yield”. In other words, it is the yearly rental income divided by the purchase price of your property. Generally, the higher the rental yield, the better the return of your investment property. So in which suburbs in Victoria are you likely to find the highest rental yields? Based on REIV sales and rental data over the 12 months ending June 2013, the top investment option is a one-bedroom apartment in Carlton returning an average gross rental yield of 8.6 per cent. While blue chip metropolitan suburbs are a popular option for many investors, it may also be worth considering regional properties. Three out of the top five

Rewind to the final Simon

Says with SIMON CORR Second Semi-final Albury Racing Club CEO John Miller and 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour Ambassador Wendy Green proudly hold the Melbourne Cup at the Albury Racecourse.

Warm welcome for Cup THE Victoria Racing Club’s (VRC) Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour received a resounding welcome to Albury on Monday as part of its threemonth journey across Australia and New Zealand. Led by Albury Racing Club, hundreds of people joined events where they had the opportunity to hold the 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup and were captivated by Wendy Green’s personal insights into the illustrious race. The VRC Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour has started in 2003 and celebrated its 10th anniversary last year by trekking across the red centre and taking underwater dives on the Great Barrier Reef. “I think the Melbourne Cup is a very important part of the national psyche and until this cup tour started people didn’t really understand that there was a cup and that in fact, it was accessible,” Ms Green said. “It always went off in a helicopter and no-one ever saw it again, so the idea behind this is to say ’it’s the race that stops the nation so have a bit of a look at it and feel that ownership of it even more’.” VRC representative, Joe McGrath said the visit was an outstanding success and congratulated Albury Racing Club on an impressive and memorable day. “The Victoria Racing Club is incredibly proud to share the Emirates

Melbourne Cup and is overwhelmed and appreciative with how the community of Albury warmly embraced the visit,” said visiting VRC representative, Joe McGrath. After beginning the morning at Albury Racecourse, the tour party visited excited students at St Anne’s Primary School and St Patrick’s Primary School. The iconic trophy stopped by the stunning Hume Weir for a photo opportunity before residents at Mercy Place Nursing Home had their chance to get up close and personal with racing’s holy grail. The day was capped off in spectacular fashion with the Albury Racing Club Charity Cocktail Party at the Commercial Club. The iconic trophy, a symbol of Australian sporting, social and cultural history, will now travel to Canberra as the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour continues to share the spirit of the 152-year-old Melbourne Cup. The 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup will return home to Flemington before the 153rd running of ‘the race that stops a nation’ on Tuesday, 5 November. Since 2003, the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour has travelled more than 325,000 kilometres, visited more than 236 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations and engaged tens of thousands of people.

BRACE yourself, because here we go again. It’s just a fortnight since the blockbuster at the Albury Sportsground was played for top spot between Albury and Yarrawonga and remarkably this Saturday the two will meet yet again. This time the prize will be an entry into the Ovens and Murray Grand Final. The fallout from their last stand-off was considerable, with Albury forward Andy Carey receiving a one-week suspension and Yarrawonga sustaining injuries to Xavier Leslie, Ed Bayles and Connor Hargreaves. It was a brutal game, not for the fainthearted that had a fair bit of untoward physicality. I am extremely doubtful tempers will reach the heights they did on that occasion, but I am in no doubt it will once again be tough, uncompromising football. It appeared as though Albury’s pace was the biggest concern to come out of their last contest for the Pigeons. However after their slick performance against Lavington last Saturday, it may not have

been the pace so much but rather a lack of pressure placed on the ball carriers. Yarrawonga smothered the Lavington midfielders with desperate and relentless pressure. It was a dedicated team effort to ensure disposal of the football was panicked and not measured. This type of team football will be exactly what they must bring to the table this weekend should they wish to defeat the Tigers. Yarrawonga will be a far more potent side with the return of Kayne Petiffer as well. The attacking forward was dangerous in his return from injury last weekend and will allow the Pigeons to be less predictable in attack. “Big Fev “ also returned to some good form Saturday gone, and he will be much better for the run this time around. His contests with Albury’s Michael Thompson have let him down in the past and one would expect he will do his utmost to rectify that result. Thompson however is not to be taken lightly and he is just one of a multitude of impressive Tiger defenders. Lloyd Shepherd, Luke Packer, Will Smith and Daniel Maher are the nucleus of a very underrated defence. Their back six also get invaluable support from the Albury mid-fielders as they drop back to take on any forward thrusts and a team. The midfield slaughtered Yarrawonga last time with Morris medal favourite and co-coach Chris Hyde, Lonnie Hampton and Charles Gaylard all getting huge numbers. Don’t expect anywhere near the same latitude they were granted that day!

2013 CLEARANCE

In a nutshell it will be a cracker, as it always is with these two. I find it hard to see how Yarrawonga can reverse a 45-point margin against a team of this quality. Albury by 23 points.

First Semi-Final THIS do or die final will be played on a wide open John Foord Oval at Corowa. Lavington will be a bit down on confidence after a football touch-up last week at the hands of the Pigeons. The Panthers also have their injury concerns with the clubs spiritual leader in Matt Pendergast unlikely to play with a hamstring injury. The Panthers ironically have struggled to find form since their season defining win over Yarrawonga a month and a bit ago. Their opponents Wang Rovers had a gruelling victory in an exciting match against Nth Albury in Sunday’s Elimination Final. Both sides have a strong defence and neither a real forward focal point, so it should be an interesting encounter. One week ago I would have picked Lavington, however with the Hawks gathering momentum and the Panthers’ injury woes, I think the Rovers might keep departing coach Mick Caruso’s dream alive with a narrow victory. Rovers by 5 points. Yarrawonga and Lavington supporters should take some comfort in the fact that I failed to tip a correct result last week.
