Sutter ’s Mill in 1848 started t h e g r e a t g o l d r u s h t o California The account that drew national and worldwide notice was a small two inch item at the bottom of the front page of the March 15, 1848, issue of the “Californian,” published in San Francisco The article was attributed to B R B u c k e l e w, a n d m e n tioned quantities of gold just being

Ever since, the search for gold has been popular and even today is a hobby or more for many people. Modern tech nology has developed special ized equipment costing thou sands of dollars for the more serious searchers.

At first the gold rush did not draw miners they were sim ply “Argonauts” gold seek ers Further stories that elabo r a t e d o n J a m e s M a r s h a l l ’s a c c o u n t t o l d t h a t h e j u s t picked up the original nugget, leading to the belief that all

you had to do was get to California and start picking up the gold, as it must just be lying everywhere (at least in the foothills of the Sierras) It w a s s u p p o s e d t o b e “ e a s y pickin’s ”

The first notice gave more than just an impression that gold was found all over the state, saying “Gold has been found in almost every part of the country ”

While it is true that gold had been found in several loca

tions in the state as early as the 1820’s, by the date of the March article very few loca tions had actually been found in the Mother Lode country Those that had were only a few miles at most from the vicinity of Coloma, the new town that sprang up at the site of Sutter ’s Mill

The first gold seekers were ill equipped, arriving with very few supplies, and little in the way of tools and equipment that would be needed to really recover the placer gold This

Early letters sent back east from the mines bear out the truth One would be miner gave the advice, “if he wants to lead a dog’s life to come, but it is a mighty hard coun try ” Another letter stated ( w i t h t y p i c a l l y u n i q u e spelling), “the digings is not so good as they are cract up to be ”

Many of the original methods used to recover gold are still used today Gold panning is still popular, and sluice boxes, dry rockers, and small dredges are used in one form or anoth er Many people now use metal detectors, and some are specifically designed to find nuggets Here is a look at the m e t h o d s t h a t d e v e l o p e d i n California's gold fields

Some of the first gold seekers

to arrive at the scene were m i n e r s f r o m M e x i c o a n d Chile, since they had a shorter trip by sea than those coming from the eastern United States. They brought a shallow cone shaped pan called a “batea” that was used to wash the gold bearing gravels. Soon the typ ical gold pan as we know it started into use It was usually 15 to 18 inches in diameter

The work was hard spend ing almost all the daylight hours bent over and stooping near a stream, often standing in the cold waters It was quickly discovered that much of the gold was found in deep er channels, and it frequently h a d t o b e r e c o v e r e d f r o m crevices in the bedrock. wash the gravels.

The Long Tom was usually a t w o m a n o p e r a t i o n . O n e would shovel the material in, while the other would remove larger rock and chunks of rough material. The concen trates would be removed from the riffles once or twice per day and panned

The big advantage was that w o r k c a p a c i t y w a s g r e a t l y increased, hence the amount of gold potentially recovered i n c r e a s e d T h e t w o m a n operation could work about 8 10 cubic yards of material in the typical day

Gold was not always located where an abundance of water existed, which led to a further improvement The “Rocker” needed far less water than a Long Tom It was about 2 5 feet long, and about 1 2 feet wide Screens were used to sort out the material, which was then concentrated on rif fles and an apron which could be constructed out of such i t e m s a s o l d b l a n k e t s , cowhide, or burlap Water was poured over the materials and the machine was vigor ously rocked for several min utes

It was not as efficient as the Long Tom, but lack of water dictated its use As the water got muddy, some of the fine gold would be lost. It became a science as to how much water was needed too much and gold would be washed away, too little and the gold would not settle

The rocker was also usually a two man operation, and 3 5 cubic yards of material could be processed in the usual 10 hour day. As with the Long Tom, the concentrates were finally panned out

The Long Tom also led to the idea for the “Sluice Box,” a l a rg e t r o u g h u s u a l l y a b o u t twelve feet long and filled w i t h r i ff l e s I t w o u l d b e sloped anywhere from 5 18 inches per the twelve feet, depending on the water sup ply The Sluice Box needed a lot of water to operate

A l l m a t e r i a l w o u l d b e dumped in at the head and allowed to pass through, the idea being that the courser

materials would grind up and clean the finer materials It took at least 20 cubic feet of water to wash one cubic foot of material, often much more A team of just a few men could work a large amount of material each day, since the riffles were only cleaned out and panned at the end of the day.

The use of Sluice Boxes led to the hydraulic mining industry in California One operation could run several Sluice Boxes if enough water and material was available for use. The first hydraulic operation start ed in 1852 at American Hill, near Nevada City in Nevada

C o u n t y. L a rg e “ M o n i t o r ” nozzles, shaped like cannons, shot water at hillsides hundred of feet away The soil, silt, gravel and debris were chan n e l e d t o r e a c h t h e S l u i c e Boxes, where the gold was concentrated. The powerful n o z z l e s c o u l d e a s i l y w a s h away whole hillsides, silting d a m s a n d f a r m l a n d d o w n stream.

The hydraulic mining industry practices led to some of the first environmental laws in California The industry had reached its peak in the early 1 8 8 0 ’s , a n d a l a w s u i t w a s f i l e d “ Wo o d r u f f v s N o r t h B l o o m f i e l d G r a v e l M i n i n g C o ” T h e c a s e s e t l e g a l precedence, and the decision against the mining company b y J u d g e L o r e n z o S a w y e r became known as the “Sawyer Decision ”

C o m p a n i e s w e r e p r o h i b i t e d from dumping their debris, first into the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, and then including all of their tributar ies. The decision eventually applied to all of the Mother Lode country Some hydraulic mining companies constructed dams to control the silting, but the end of the industry was in sight

A second decision in 1893, known as the “Caminetti Act,” required the hydraulic compa nies to be licensed, and hence assessed All were required to build dams Most went com pletely out of business One of the largest operations is pre s e r v e d a s a S t a t e P a r k M a l a k o ff D i g g i n s S t a t e Historical Park, near Nevada City

The Dip Box was set at a steep angle, and could only work smaller sand and gravel mate rial as some water had to be poured over it Most of the gold would lodge in the screen material, but sometimes riffles were set further down to catch any missed gold A further refinement was the “ D r y Wa s h e r, ” a t y p e o f Rocker used in areas where water was a major problem It was set at a pretty steep angle, and material would be loaded into the hopper The machine would be cranked or rocked vigorously, the material pass ing through screens An air bellows below would blow off the lighter particles from the r i ff l e s , l e a v i n g t h e h e a v i e r concentrates

Another gold recovery method that dated from the early days was the use of an “arrastram,” usually a mule powered dry mill The mule would drag large stones attached to chains around a rock lined circular trough The trough had chan nels spaced every few feet, and a l s o a r o u n d t h e p e r i m e t e r Raw material loaded into the arrastra would be pulverized into finer material by the large grinding rocks, freeing the fine gold which would then be col lected and panned out

The end of the hydraulic min i n g e r a l e d t o t h e f i n a l improvement in technology the use of huge gold dredges starting in 1898 Early efforts to try this method started in the early 1850’s without any suc cess, but a large type of dredge i n v e n t e d i n N e w Z e a l a n d brought promise to the lower stretches of the gold bearing rivers.

Sidewalk Vendors Facing More Rules?

The city of Escondido is consider ing local regulations for sidewalk vendors in response to a number of complaints over the past few years

In August, Councilmember Mike Morasco requested that City Attorney Mike McGuinness bring back an update on sidewalk vending regulations after receiving some of those complaints

Criminal penalties for sidewalk vendors are also not allowed, but they could be required to pay fines starting at $100 for the first viola tion and as high as $500 after multi ple violations If they refuse to pay, vendors could have their licenses revoked If caught vending without a license, they could be fined as much as $1,000

For Morasco, having health permits is important if sidewalk vendors sell food that could make someone sick He also suggested vendors acquire insurance for their businesses to protect themselves legally

“One lawsuit is going to put some one out of business,” Morasco said “It’s something to look into ”

Mayor Paul McNamara said he would like to see the city attorney come back with a reasonable ordi nance

“We’re not looking to put them out of business, but at the same time, we need to kind of give them a context to work in our city,” McNamara said

Another Big, Important Election Coming Up

Herewith, The Paper Endorsements and recommenda tions on candidates and propositions with commentary added

We will make recommendations and/or endorsements on a number of candidates, issues, and proposi tions, but several items we deem so important that they head the list and draw our attention and comment.

Palomar Hospital District

Palomar Hospital has been named a World’s Best Hospital three years in a row thanks to the leadership of Board Chair Linda Greer

On November 8, 2022, voters have an opportunity to build on Ms Greer ’s efforts by electing like

A hospital board position is a com plex role that requires trustees to oversee governance of a large, inte grated business, while at the same time ultimately being responsible for the lives of a community It’s a job that requires the right level of knowledge, strength, determination and compassion For three straight years, Newsweek has named Palomar Health a World’s Best Hospital, and fortunately, there is a group of highly qualified candi dates committed to building on this recognition, and to continue the tra dition of excellence we rely on

Though this is the largest public health care district in California, the average voter neither knows or cares about who makes up the board of directors Because we rec ognize how critically important this board is, and how important it is to elect the right candidates, we strongly recommend the following candidates:

Laura Edwards Tate appears to rep resent the world of prima donnas and obstructionists more than a con tributing board member She seems primarily interested in ensuring that the spotlight shines on her I recall one board meeting and an agenda item that should have taken 15 min utes to resolve It took almost two hours, thanks to nit picking by Ms Edwards Tate. She goes to far as to refer to herself in the third person in her written correspondent as “The Honorable Laura Edwards Tate ” That, to me, smacks of elitism, being imperious and an “I’m better than you ” attitude Not sure who bequeathed the title of “ T h e Honorable ” upon her, but it is not well placed She needs to be retired from the board

Tom Clark has been sanctioned by the entire board for misconduct and has been stripped of all commitee assignements Tchnically, he can till vote but 97% of the time he either abstains or votes negative He is taking up a seat and voting posi tion that could better be served by a more qualified candidate

More Work To Do

The current legislative session ended on August 31st In normal times, no more business would be conducted by the Legislature in Sacramento until the next session officially begins on December 5th But these are far from normal times

Violent crime is exploding and the homelessness crisis is worsening Gas prices are approaching $7 a gallon, and families are being forced to choose between paying the rent, buying food or putting gas in the car

The Legislature needs to take immedi ate action, We should pass legislation suspending our state’s gasoline tax, the nation’s highest This could be done with the stroke of the Governor ’s pen, but so far he’s refused to even consider taking this important first step Permit approvals should be expedited so California’s vast inland oil reserves can be used to increase supply and cut costs We have some of the largest reserves in the country, yet most of the oil we use is imported This increases costs for consumers and causes serious environmental damage Crimes like domestic violence, human trafficking and rape of an unconscious person should be reclassified as violent felonies Smash and grab robberies must again be subject to felony prose cution so that criminals are jailed, where many will receive treatment and counseling for drug addiction, prevent ing future crimes and reducing recidi vism The growing homelessness crisis

must be declared a state emergency encampments near sensitive areas like schools and childcare facilities should be prohibited

These concrete steps can be taken now! That’s why I have signed a letter with many of my Assembly and Senate colleagues calling for a Special Session of the Legislature to consider real solutions to the economic, public safety and humanitarian disasters engulfing California To view our let ter, please click here

An Incredible Story

You've probably heard me say it before, but I must repeat it, One Safe Place is transforming lives One Safe Place is a center that serves human traf ficking victims, seniors suffering from elder abuse and is a place someone that is being domestically abused can go to escape from their perpetrator I wanted to share an incredible success story from One Safe Place

Last week, three San Diego Sheriff Deputies accompanied a woman to One Safe Place The woman was trying to escape her abusive boyfriend, but this posed a problem as she was living on the streets That all changed when deputies came to her aid after learning that she'd been repeatedly assaulted by her boyfriend

The minute they arrived at One Safe Place, the woman was provided food, clothing, and a place to rest while the One Safe Place village of partners got to work The Homeless Outreach Team worked with four other partner agen cies to ensure the woman would be safely housed for the evening until she could fly out of state to her family who was ready to welcome her home The deputies were so invested in getting this woman to safety that they picked her up from her safe location this morning, drove her to the airport, and accompanied her to the airline gate runway The woman was smiling and crying tears of joy all at the same time This is a wonderful example of collab

oration between law enforcement, the District Attorney's office, and non governmental partners that are making a tangible difference in the lives of crime victims in our community

I want to thank our deputies for com ing to this women's rescue and for all the people who made this possible I continue to be amazed at the work being done at One Safe Place and was glad to support the effort with $50,000 to Free to Thrive which will provide a head law attorney for the legal clinic at One Safe Place

Travel Troubles hooter

Q: I rented an Airbnb in Houston for a summer internship About halfway through our 10 week stay, my husband and I saw a mouse Then we discovered the mouse holes in sealed food bags in the pantry

We left the rental and contacted the host We requested that he lay some mouse traps and disinfect the unit We told him we would stay out of the unit for four days for him to do this.

He responded that no one else had reported any issues. I again requested him to lay mouse traps, and he said the place was under a Terminix contract and they would spray

I escalated the issue to Airbnb A representative said the host informed them he took care of the issue He told me he did a walk through and everything was as it was before

Airbnb told me that based on my evidence I didn't have any pic tures of the mouse they couldn't refund me any amount If I can celed, I would receive no refund I asked if they wanted me to return to the Airbnb to take better pic tures and lay mouse traps They said if I wanted support that is what I would need to do

So I did I caught two mice on the first night of laying the glue traps We also had bait boxes, so I imag ine more mice ate that bait and will die in the vents

I sent photos to Airbnb It didn't respond I called Airbnb A repre sentative promised a return call, but no one called back I expect much more from Airbnb Can you help me get a refund? Kristal Bird, Austin, Texas

A: Airbnb rentals should be free of mice and other pests And both your host and Airbnb should have taken your complaint seriously Telling you the place was under contract by a pest control compa ny isn't the same thing as actually doing something about it

According to Airbnb's terms, a rental is "not habitable" if it con tains pests Airbnb's policy is to delist the home until the host can prove it has been treated by a pro fessional pest control company

At the same time, Airbnb was cor rect to require proof of the rodent infestation You had presented it with photos of mouse droppings and bags that the mice had chewed through, but that wasn't enough You needed mice and to your credit, you furnished Airbnb with two of them.

Airbnb should have found you alternate accommodations and

Historically Speaking

Since the days when we had a real estate venture capitalist for a presi dent, we’ve been exposed to all sorts of descriptions and phrases in lan guage our mothers once used soap to wash out our mouths (My mom used Lava when I once dared to say “dammit” after falling off my trike at age 4)

Words and Phrases We Really Don’t Need

In case you haven’t noticed, the Queen’s (now the ‘King’s) English, or at least our American version of the language, is being quickly eroded with some rather boring words and phrases most of which we don’t need Our young people, and those well up into their thirties, are using language that makes them sound ignorant I’ll not mention everyday utterings by most of us that should have been learned in grade school

Here are a few examples of words and phrases that should be phased out and/or never used at all:

“S up?” or “Whad up?” often used by younger people as a greeting or just passing the time How about political pundits constantly using: “At the end of the day” Or “When the rubber hits the road ” The one I dislike the most used by politicos trying to gain favor: “ those who should be paying their fair share ”

Young people who haven’t bothered to learn how to properly carry on a conversation ( between texting on their phones) continue reminding us: “Ya know?” And, there’s the word “So” (so often used to begin a sen tence or answer a question “Very unique, ” Most unique, ” “Quite unique” are all exaggerations of the word “unique ” You cannot improve on “unique ” It’s unique in that it is the only word you need in order to describe something special or differ ent than anything comparable

How about “Irregardless ” There is no such word The correct usage is simply “Regardless ” (If someone has a dictionary with irrgardless, then it’s been slipped in without consulting Mr Webster) regardless what you may have heard

During this time of political persua sion we’re hearing a lot about the var ious methods of rhetoric a particular candidate has in his (or her) “wheel house” or “toolbox ” It’s astonishing the words and phrases political han dlers will give a candidate to use in explaining or covering over a mis spoken word or action

But, to me, the most irritating phrase of these days: “My bad ” when admitting to some minor infraction I suppose that short blurb does cover a few minor excuses Whatever hap pened to “sorry ” It was explained to me by a teen ager that admitting you’re “sorry” or issuing a “thank you” is a sign of weakness However, “my bad” covers all minor faux pas and “thank you” is a phrase seldom heard because they’re, apparently discouraging words to young peo ple

So, at the end of the day, when the rubber has hit the road, you’ll find most of these language annoyances to be useless, don’t ya know? Irregardless what some might say ya know?

BYGONE DAYS We are the chil dren of the fabulous fifties and six ties No one living today will ever have that opportunity again During that idyllic time we were given two of our most precious historical gifts: relative peace and prosperity it was an era that followed two brutal wars World War II and Korea Brace yourselves I fear we’re due for another of life’s trial hopefully not as bad as a “depression” or “world war ” because we may not survive to the lifestyle of democratic government and society we’ ve always known

‘LITTLE LADY’ Back quite a number of years ago I went to a mock news conference held by the Journalism Department at Cal State Fullerton The instructor invited John “Duke” Wayne to come in and give the students an experience of inter viewing a celebrity We in the media were invited to sit quietly in the back of the room, but were not allowed to participate with any questions

After 30 minutes or so of questions, primarily from male students, a petite young woman sitting on the front row raised her hand to put forth a query When the Duke called upon her, she stood up and in a somewhat sarcastic voice asked, “Why is it the critics never like your movies?”

The Duke looked around the room with a smile on his face, then focused back on the young student “Little Lady, ain’t no one likes my movies ‘cep tin the public ”

REAGANISM “The taxpayer is someone who works for the federal government but doesn't have to take the civil service examination ”

The former president often told us : “The most haunting seven words anyone can hear: ‘We’re from the government; we’re to help!” And finally, Reagan explained the defini tion of a “Recession’ is when your neighbor loses his job; ‘Depression’ is when you lose yours ”

SCAG SEZ: “One thing I've learned about my tongue, it's usually wet so it can easily slip And, lastly “Birthdays are good for your health the more you have, the healthier you can get ”

Cecil Scaglione, Mature Life Features

SEZ ME While I’ve often been questioned about the validity of some of my stories, what you read in this column is usually fact give or take a fib or two

paid for them while the home was being treated. I think you might have also made a strong argument for moving to a different rental for the duration of your stay.

I would have suggested escalating this case to an Airbnb executive. I list the names, numbers and email Airbnb's managers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

I contacted Airbnb on your behalf. It apologized and refunded your remaining nights.

Problem Solved

Q: Last November, I bought tickets for a Jan. 16 Disney on Ice show as a Christmas present to my kids. On Dec. 30, Ticketmaster notified me that the entry requirement had changed. All attendees to this event had to be vaccinated.

Since we couldn't accommodate, we have requested a refund from Ticketmaster. I called Ticketmaster, and a representative promised a refund within 30 days. But after a

month, I still didn't have the money.

I filed a dispute with Chase, my credit card company. Chase refused the dispute without asking for more details or proof of refund promised by Ticketmaster. I sent an appeal, which included written evidence that Ticketmaster had agreed to a refund.

I have just received a letter from Chase informing me that the dispute was closed and the charge is valid.

Ticketmaster is not responding to calls. Chase is ignoring the evidence. I'm lost and need help to get this resolved. Please, please, please let me know what could be done to get the refund processed.

It's bad enough that I had six disappointed kids on Christmas, not getting the gift they all wanted. Now I'm also out of over $800 and have no way to recover the money. Can you help me get a refund? -Konrad Karpiesiuk, Wallington, N.J.

A: I'm sorry you couldn't make your Disney on Ice performance. Ticketmaster should have sent you a refund within 30 days, as promised. But there might have been more going on than meets the eye.

Refunds can sometimes take longer than 30 days If you didn't have the money by then, you should have asked Ticketmaster not filed a credit card chargeback. A dispute of your credit card bill under the Fair Credit Billing Act is a last resort in resolving a consumer complaint It also complicates any refund currently underway Specifically, it would have stopped Ticketmaster's refund actions

Even so, Chase should have care fully reviewed your claim instead of giving you the cold shoulder You had Ticketmaster's promise in writing (Good job, by the way ) A credit card dispute department should have taken that as a credit memo and offered a full refund It's unclear why Chase didn't even ask for your paperwork the first time and then brushed aside your appeal Your next step would have been to request a third round, which would go to the credit card network or to formal arbitration

This is not a case about vaccina tions and public events, although I'm sure some readers will want to go there It's about a company doing what it promised and a credit card doing what it's required to under the law Chase should have carefully reviewed your dispute, as the law required it to do And Ticketmaster should have given you a prompt refund

As I read between the lines, I think there may have been some confu sion between Chase and Ticketmaster Maybe Chase turned down your request because a refund was already on the way But your appeal may have gummed up the works Next time a company promises you a refund, be patient It can take more than a month to get your money

And if you don't? I would appeal to an executive instead of going straight to a dispute I list the names, numbers and email address es of the Ticketmaster managers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott org

I contacted Ticketmaster on your behalf It issued a full refund of $803

Greetings Escondido,

When it comes to holidays, the Fall is my favorite time of year We are not that far away from the Marine Corps birth day, which has always been a big celebration in the Corps, and belated Happy Birthday to my Navy friends We also have Veterans Day coming up and of course Thanksgiving

As a Marine Veteran of almost 28 years, the experience had a huge impact in shaping the values of my life Honor, Courage, Commitment was not a catch phrase but a standard I think every veteran of every service would say some thing similar We all share a common theme of putting our country ahead of our selves I sometimes think everyone should serve I think our politics would be less divisive and more “good of the community” oriented

Veterans Day is a celebration of service We will be the only city in the county to have a parade I hope you can come out It will be on Grand Avenue on November 11th

And finally, we have Thanksgiving A time to reflect on our bounty and what we are grateful for I think we all have a lot to be thankful for, and one of them is living in the greatest country in world history despite our imperfections

Please have a safe and happy time during this next month! Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe!

2022 PC SALES AT LOWEST LEVEL IN THIRTY YEARS!”

Dell and HP PC sales are in the tank and Intel had its first losing quarter in decades AMD is just about the only happy camper in the industry AMD’s Ryzen series of CPUs is replacing Intel’s antiquated i series (i 3, 5,7,9) at a pace fast enough to allow AMD to grow CPU sales in a shrinking market

PC sales (notebook and desktop) have been in decline for more than a decade There have been several contributing factors to the decline in PC sales For starters, as more and more Internet based applications became available, smart phones and Android tablets replaced PCs as Internet connection devices for many

John Van Zante’s

itter Cor ner

school and home users Another leading factor was that, during the Covid pandemic, many institutions implemented “work from home” policies, temporarily deferring the decline in PC sales as millions were purchased to support home workers Now that the crises is over, the decline has resumed, accelerated by the existence of all those extra PCs purchased during the two year “work from home” period In spite of the decade long decline in sales, there are still more PCs in use today than ever before The justification for this counterintuitive phenome non is that PCs these day are main taining their technologically rele vancy for ten or more years, far longer than in previous years In the early years the useful life of a computer was about two years “By the time you get your new PC home it will be obsolete” was a familiar catch phrase in the days before Windows7 With the release of Win7 in late 2009 everything changed Win7 was a 64bit operating system and 64 bit CPUs allowed unlimited RAM counts and super sized hard drives These PCs were capable of running the Internet, stand alone applications and streaming video in “real time” For the vast majority of home, school and business user, “The Need for Speed” was over. Many users soon learned that by updating to the latest operating sys tem and perhaps adding RAM or even replacing the HDD with an SSD, their ten year old PC was every bit as capable as any new computer at a fraction of the cost. They didn’t buy a new computer

Passmark Benchmark (cpubench mark net) is a popular utility used to measure the relative speeds of CPUs In 2010 CPU (Passmark)

* Just because your pet enjoys people coming to the door Trick or Treaters might not want to be greet ed by a dog or cat Find a safe place for your pet to escape the commo tion

* Frightened pets are more likely to “door dash " If they get out and see more trick or treaters, they'll either keep running or find a hiding place You DO NOT want to spend Halloween night searching for your pet

* What about pet costumes? Make sure they're safe, fit properly, and do not restrict the pet's vision If you're taking your pet outdoors, the costume should be reflective DO NOT force your pet to wear a costume it doesn't want!

speeds ranged from 1500 in low cost PCs, to over 6000 in higher per formance models This year the CPUs in low cost PCs benchmark in the 7000 range while the highest performance CPUs (AMD Threadrippers) score speeds as high as 100,000 Even twelve year old PCs are typically capable of han dling high speed Internet and com mon applications like spreadsheets, word processors, finance, genealogy and tax programs in “real time” The eye popping speeds of the newest CPUs provide no tangible benefit for Internet browsing and commonly used applications Savvy users sim ply keep their older PCs up to date

There are some applications that do take advantage of high speed com ponents High end gaming, video editing, solids modeling, and anima tion are examples. We love to do collaborative designs with power users and there can be significant advantages to sourcing these “power PCs” with us Among them are cost, local service and the opportunity to personally participate in the design process For the other 95% of us, upgrading an older PC or purchasing a “refurb” is almost always a more cost effective alternative But if you really have your heart set on a brand spanking new PC for work or play, there is no better place to have one made, just for you, than at The Computer Factory

Doorbells, shouting, and scary masks That’s enough to scare the bejeebers out of any pet Come on animal lovers! Let’s keep our best friends (and the trick or treaters) safe this

Think about it from your pet’s per spective The bell rings The people you’re supposed to be protecting run and throw open the door Strangers in costumes (who may or may not look and smell familiar) shout “Trick or Treat!” Then they take your stuff and run away That’s not their stuff It’s our stuff!

We close the door and wait, anx iously, for it to happen again and again Talk about mixed signals! Do you want me to protect our stuff or not?

* Should we take the dog trick or treating? No But if you insist, make sure Mom or Dad always holds the leash and that "Count Barkula" stays back from the door Even if YOUR dog is okay, the dog inside might feel the need to protect its home

* No Candy No Booze And remember that pets eat candy, wrappers and all When you start eating the candy dispose of the wrappers safely * Black cats? Halloween isn't any more dangerous for black cats than any other night But it's still hard to see black cats in the dark Keep them safe inside

Then, came the A D ’ s The A D ’ s m e a n t m o r e t h a n counting the years up rather t h a n c o u n t i n g t h e m d o w n The A D ’ s brought Judaism a new baby brother, a brother w h o w o u l d o n e d a y l e a v e them, at least religious popu larity wise, in the dust

C h a n g e w a s i n t h e a i r Trouble in the Holy Land, the R o m a n s p u s h i n g e v e r y b o d y around In times like these, Jewish tradition calls for a m e s s i a h t o s h o w u p a n d straighten things out And, to be sure, there was no lack of a p p l i c a n t s f o r t h e j o b . Messiah candidates, usually badly dressed, with wild eyes and crazy hair, would stand o n s o m e h i g h p l a c e w h e r e e v e r y b o d y c o u l d s e e t h e m , and proclaim, “I’m him!” or, more loftily, “I’m Him!” (Of c o u r s e , t h e g r a m m a t i c a l l y correct version is “I’m He”, but people rarely warm to a messiah who’s smarter than they are.)

They were all fakes, every one

of them. They’d draw some early heat, earning a free meal or a place to stay, possibly a c o m p l i m e n t a r y p a i r o f s a n dals, but sooner or later, reali ty did them in They’d proph esy things and they wouldn’t come to pass Or some sick person would cry, “Heal me!” and they’d just look at them. Game over After that, they were just irritating pests, who eventually had to go out and find a job

But then, someone came along who, to this day, is viewed as the genuine article We’re told of an ability to heal with a t o u c h , w a l k o n w a t e r , a n d make a small amount of food go a really long way. Jewish o n l o o k e r s , d e s p e r a t e f o r a m e s s i a h , c o u l d n ’ t h e l p b u t take notice. The right guy at the right time

He got twelve followers. Not too

the things he was pulling off, but Jews, even desperate ones, are a h i g h l y s k e p t i c a l p e o p l e When you tell Jews there’s this guy out there doing mira cles, the standard response is, “Go away, I’m busy ” Or, if they’re funny, “Let him try selling flannel in the desert Now that would be a miracle

Of course, you can’t blame early Jews for not viewing with awe a religion that had twelve people in it For a religion, twelve is a p r e c a r i o u s l y p u n y n u m b e r Romans sweep through in a b a d m o o d g o o d b y e , Christians A plague wipes them out in twenty minutes. Followers get jobs out of town, they start families and can’t m a k e t h e m e e t i n g s , a n o t h e r messiah shows up giving away camels, these guys were hang ing by a thread. Borrowing a desert metaphor, when you ’ re in a twelve man religion, your membership card’s written in sand

A l a r g e r m e m b e r s h i p w a s urgently needed It was grow or go And growing wouldn’t be easy The problem? To con vince Jews, stubborn people to begin with, to abandon a reli gion of thousands of years, and throw in with twelve zealots proclaiming that theirs is the one true way Oh, and one more thing If the Romans c a u g h t y o u b e i n g o n e , t h e y nailed you to a cross

I imagine and since I wasn’t there, imagination’s all I can go on that there had to have been some sort of committee A m a r k e t i n g t e a m , d e v i s i n g strategies for attracting Jews to the fledgling faith Maybe later, they’d present their sug gestions to the whole congrega tion, but to hammer out the basics, I see a smaller contin gent Maybe two people, say, M a t t h e w ( f o r m e r l y M u r r a y ) and Simon (formerly Sol)

I f t h i s m e e t i n g h a d b e e n recorded, we’d know what it w a s t h a t s a v e d C h r i s t i a n i t y from extinction, and paved the w a y t o t h e g r e a t s u c c e s s i t enjoys today Since it wasn’t recorded, I’ll have to make it up We open on an early A D gavel pounding on a table, or just a hand hitting an indoor rock

“I call this meeting to order.” “Murray, it’s just you and ” “Excuse me It’s Matthew ” “What?”

“When I was Jewish, I was Murray Now I’m Matthew With two ‘t’s’”.

“Sorry Matthew What I was saying is it’s just you and me There’s no need for protocol.” “You’re right, Sol ” “Simon ” “Sorry.”

“Okay Now, what we ’ re here to do is to come up with appeal ing ideas to win converts and swell our ranks Because if our ranks don’t swell ” “ …we ’ re headed for oblivion.” “That’s a depressing way to put it ” “But it’s true, isn’t it?”

“It might be But I’d prefer a sunnier attitude “May I be candid? I never wanted to be on this committee My strength is picnics and out ings I don’t even know where

to start ”

”It’s a tough assignment, no question. Why don’t we start by looking at the things that make us different ”

“We’re certainly qualified to do that We used to be Jews, and now, we ’ re this By the way, what is this?

“What is what?”

“What we are You know, like our name. Jews are Jews. Who are we?”

“ T h e r e ’ s a n o t h e r c o m m i t t e e working on that.”

“Good ‘Cause it’s embarrass ing when someone asks, ‘What do you call yourselves?’ and I say ‘I don’t know ’ It shows a lack of imagination Maybe we s h o u l d h a v e a t e m p o r a r y name Like we wear these fish emblems, maybe we should call ourselves Fishtians ”

“I think we ’ re wandering here ”

“Sorry What’s our job again?”

“To convert the Jews ”

“Right ”

“And to do that, we need to consider what is it that makes us different?”

“I know a difference ”

“What’s that?”

“ T h e i r S a b b a t h i s o n a S a t u r d a y , a n d o u r s i s o n Sunday ”

“I don’t think you ’ re getting the concept ”

“You wanted different I gave you different ”

“Think about it Do you really think the opportunity to pray on Sunday instead of Saturday will send Jews flocking to our midst?”

“Oh, I see It’s not just differ ent It’s different and better ” “Exactly Maybe we should draw from experience What was it about us that made you want to switch?”

“That’s easy Pork ”

“You switched for pork?”

“ N e v e r u n d e r e s t i m a t e t h e power of forbidden foods A lot of Jews eat it already. They c h e w p e p p e r m i n t l e a v e s , s o you won’t smell it on their breath.”

“I may be wrong, but I don’t see a huge cross over from pork ”

“ H o w a b o u t ‘ S u n d a y ’ a n d pork?”

“Will you stop with ‘Sunday?’ ’Sunday’s’ nothing. I mean, when it comes to days of rest, Saturday’s the better choice It’s a day sooner. ”

“I always thought it was too soon I wasn’t tired yet ”

“ L o o k , w e ’ r e t a l k i n g a b o u t frills ”

“Frills are important ”

“ W e ’ r e b i g g e r t h a n f r i l l s . W e ’ v e g o t a g r e a t r e l i g i o n Something so meaningful, peo ple risk death to be part of it.”

“I wouldn’t bring that up at the recruitment sessions ”

“But that says something. It says it’s worth it Now, think Go to the essence What is it about us you really like?”

“I like Jesus ”

“Good Why?”

“He’s nice ”
