2019 National Philanthrophy Day Honorees This year’s Honorees are definitely outstanding role models who embody the true meaning of philanthropy:

OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPISTS – JAMES and CAROL EGAN - In 1963, a newly married Pennsylvania couple, bravely set out for Southern California and unknown adventures. Their first vacation was spent in Palm Springs. Before leaving the desert Carol informed Jim that this is where she wanted to live someday. The Egans both share a passion for the arts and for supporting organizations that transform the lives of young people and others within the community. Their most passionate involvements include the Palm Springs Art Museum, Coachella Valley Repertory, The American Outreach Foundation, and the Palm Springs Unified School District. As Jim and Carol Egan see it “When you give, you get much more in return.” They consider it a privilege and joy to contribute their time, talents, and financial support to causes and people that enrich the lives of others. OUTSTANDING FUNDRAISING VOLUNTEER – SALLY BERGER - Every once in a while, we meet someone with unstoppable fire and zest to promote and support worthy nonprofit causes. This is the essence of one of the finest volunteer fundraisers the Coachella Valley has ever known – Sally Berger. Now in her young 80s, she is a familiar face and beloved role model with a 24/7 commitment to philanthropy – a shining example of compassion, generosity and inspiration at the highest level in support of her favorite causes. The first thing Sally did upon relocating to the desert in 2004 was to phone Aubrey Serfling, President & CEO of Eisenhower Medical Center, to ask how she could help as a volunteer. Fifteen years later, Sally has served on several Boards at Eisenhower, gifted $545,000, and helped raise nearly $25 million for the hospital. IN 2016, Harold Matzner asked Sally to join the Board of McCallum Theatre, and since then she has stimulated nearly $200,000 in gifts and contributed personally at the Founder’s Level to help underwrite free performing arts education for 40,000 elementary school children annually. OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPIC FOUNDATION, CORPORATION, OR CIVIC SERVICE ORGANIZATION – REGIONAL ACCESS PROJECT FOUNDATION – For more than 27 years, the RAP Foundation has supported philanthropy with grant funding, and has also provided the capacity building services that nonprofits need to thrive via their Center for Nonprofit Advancement. The RAP Foundation provides grants in the areas of Health, Mental Health, and Juvenile Intervention to numerous local organizations. RAP supports numerous, smaller nonprofits at its Palm Desert office with affordable work space while promoting collaboration. The RAP Foundation is also heavily involved in community partnerships and collaborative ventures. OUTSTANDING NONPROFIT FOUNDER – JO ROSEN, PARKINSON’S RESOURCE ORGANIZATION - When Jo Rosen’s husband Alan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he was the second loved one to receive this diagnosis. As Jo sought information and support, she soon realized that while there were many organizations searching for a cure for Parkinson’s, none were providing direct assistance to those affected by the real day-to-day quality of life issues caused by the illness. Founded 29 years ago, PRO is providing vital services to families in the Coachella Valley and beyond. Thanks to Jo Rosen’s vision and tireless leadership, this amazing organization is the “go to” for resources and information. OUTSTANDING YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY – BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF PALM SPRINGS – KEYSTONE CLUB MEMBERS - The Keystone Club is a unique teen leadership development opportunity for young people ages 14 to 18. As a national program of the Boys & Girls Club of America, teens participate in activities such as academic success, career preparation, community service, and teen outreach. Keystone teaches its members to motivate and inspire their peers. In addition to their personal responsibilities, these teens not only contribute time to become mentors and role models to other kids in the Boys & Girls Club, but they also dedicate countless hours to make an impact in our community. OUTSTANDING FUNDRAISING PROFESSIONAL – JUDI OLIVAS, DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, FRIENDS OF THE PALM SPRINGS ANIMAL SHELTER – Judi Olivas’ giving heart has guided her from the beginning as she began her career thirty years ago as a frontline social worker and advocate for victims of domestic violence and child abuse. Her work in social justice, crisis intervention, and community advocacy were key to a deep understanding and respect for social innovation and the impact created by social change philanthropy. Relocating to the Valley, Judi joined Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, as Associate Executive Director for 15 years. Other past affiliations have included The Joslyn Center and OneFuture Coachella Valley. As a volunteer member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Judi has served as Board Secretary, President-Elect, Chair of National Philanthropy Day®, and is currently Chapter President.

Event producer Frank Goldstin, and his company MOMENTOUS, is behind some of the valley’s most notable annual galas and fundraising events. Desert Charities News caught up with Frank for an exclusive chat on the event season ahead and what it takes to make today’s events successful, impactful, and most certainly –Momentous.

ensure that the event garners great success. The creative and concepting process stems from that, so that it aligns with the organization’ brand and elevates their growth. The rest then really flows naturally into the event marketing, design, production, entertainment and overall formation of the program.

DCN: Frank, heading into the 2019/2020 event season, and from the looks of the events calendar, it sure seems to be a busy one for you!

For me, the business side of what I do as an event producer is even more important than the

traditional elements one would expect my firm to deliver. At the end of the day, I suppose that’s my added value. DCN: So, let’s go back to the 2019-2020 event season. What do you have in store for us? FG: I’m really looking forward to this season of events. Each and every one will be exciting, unique and different, and truly signature to

FG: It’s a super exciting season ahead filled with many events for such great organizations. I feel very honored to have the incredible opportunity to serve our valley and philanthropic community in this way. DCN: What’s your approach when it comes to delivering these types of high-profile events for your clients? FG: For me, my go-to is to always start with the strategy behind the event and to clearly identify, both from financial and reputational standpoints, what my client is looking to achieve. For example, with the 15th Anniversary of Wow for SafeHouse of the Desert on November 9th. It was decided to expand the footprint and move the event to an evening gala format in honor of its 15th anniversary. To do this effectively, a great deal of strategic advisement and planning is involved to

its organization. Highlights include the 15th Anniversary of Wow for SafeHouse, Everyday Heroes Awards for Desert AIDS Project, The Muses & Patroness Annual Fundraiser for The McCallum Theatre, The Waring Gala, the 15th Anniversary Opening Night for Modernism Week, Mizell’s Stars Among Us 15th Anniversary Gala, the 50th Anniversary Gala for The Living Desert, The Palm Springs Air Museum Gala, and the 30th Anniversary Gala for United Way of the Desert, to name just a few. This season has many organizations celebrating milestones and anniversaries which is really special.

...among many others.

DCN: You’re involved in producing other types of events in our valley as well, right?

DCN: That’s fantastic. How can you be reached for a consult?

FG: Yes. Although fundraising and gala events make up a great portion of my business, I still do a number of corporate events and very special social parties as well. Plus, I enjoy traveling with some of my clients to produce their events out of town. I feel it keeps me fresh and allows me to always bring great ideas and experiences back to the valley for clients here to experience and enjoy. It’s the best of all worlds.

FG: The best way to reach me is at 760.273.5050 or Frank@GoMomentous.com I enjoy talking with many organizations about their events and I’m always happy to discuss new opportunities and partnerships.

By: Andrea Carter The Coachella Valley has recently gained a stellar – and quite stunning – asset, as one of the nation’s most sought-after benefit auctioneers has recently decided to make the desert her new home. At first glance, you may be surprised to learn that Karen Sorbo – who has been recognized as one of the top benefit auctioneers in the country – came from the humble roots of a Minnesota farm girl. Her vivacious energy and passion for her career in fundraising shine through from the moment you meet her. “I believe there are two important days in your life: the day you were born, and the day you discovered why,” said Sorbo. “I truly believe that I was born to make a difference.” For over 27 years, she has engaged audiences with her commanding stage presence and precise fundraising techniques – raising over $700 million conducting over 2,800 auctions since graduating from both the Missouri Auctioneer School and World Wide College of Auctioneering. While Sorbo is recruited by fundraising event planners around the world, local charities have the advantage of bringing Sorbo on board to help raise funds at the many galas and black tie affairs right here in the Coachella Valley without the need for factoring in travel expenses – which many nonprofits have had to do because there haven’t been professional benefit auctioneers in this market. “I have the most fun job in the world, and it is a gift to be able to help charities exceed their fundraising goals,” continued Sorbo. “I had one organization that was stuck on about $100,000 for several years. I was brought in and raised $225,000 for them,” continued Sorbo. “It was a thrill and an honor to be a part of that milestone where they were able to really break through that ceiling in their fundraising efforts.” If you’re interested in speaking with Karen about your upcoming fundraising events, learn more at www.karensorbo.com; email her at karen@karensorbo.com or call 612-868-4929.

We all know this model because it hits all of us in our own neighborhoods: as educational requirements grow, our schools focus more and more of their resources in providing the basics of education and little by little their budgets become leaner and leaner where it comes to providing anything more than the basics. So, the parent and teachers’ organizations connected to the schools start an independent nonprofit foundation solely dedicated to supporting the educational necessities that the school’s regular budget will no longer cover. That’s exactly the same model the local Desert Recreation District here in our neighborhood followed in creating its own nonprofit foundation the Desert Recreation Foundation. The mission of Desert Recreation Foundation is to enrich and preserve the quality of life for residents of the California Desert Recreation District in the Coachella Valley. The Foundation directly and solely supports Desert Recreation District which is responsible for over 30 recreational facilities that include community and fitness centers, sports fields, swimming pools, a golf course and driving range, and various parks, trails and open spaces. Desert Recreation District is the largest park and recreation district in California, covering over 1,800 square miles and serving more than 385,000 residents throughout the greater Coachella Valley. The District manages, maintains, and assists in not only supporting parks and recreation facilities but in creating and delivering quality programs, services, and classes while facilitating additional leisure opportunities through community

collaborative partnerships. In the past year alone, Desert Recreation District has offered over 2,800 classes and programs with an enrollment of 28,857 participants as well as more than 200 special community events attended by more than 12,000 attendees. Starting in 2001 and operating as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Desert Recreation Foundation works behind the scenes to ensure that all residents in the Coachella Valley have access to quality recreational resources, facilities, parks and programs that serve today’s needs and those for generations to come. The Foundation leads the fundraising efforts to support Desert Recreation District’s Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance to families and individuals in the community who may otherwise be unable to participate in the District’s recreational activities and programs. In addition to the Scholarship Fund, Desert Recreation Foundation focuses its special events efforts to support the expansion and creation of the District’s Adaptive Sports & Therapy Programs which strives to remove any and all barriers possible for those residents of the valley living with challenging special needs and handicaps to participate in the District’s recreational activities and programs.

In the years to come, Desert Recreation Foundation will continue to work and grow toward enriching and preserving the quality of life for residents of the Coachella Valley by supporting Desert Recreation District’s parks and recreation system. As the Foundation expands upon its strategic plan and through leadership in capital planning, it will strive to remain a valued and effective community resource helping to fund new infrastructures, the purchase and development of land for new parks, and creating new programs that serve the changing needs of residents.

Desert AIDS Project recently lost one of our most important advocates and voices, our beloved Barbara Keller. On December 18th, DAP will honor the woman who championed our mission as we rename our main building the Barbara Keller LOVE Building. The Barbara Keller LOVE Building will be the heart of our expanding campus, dramatically increasing our ability to provide care for so many in need. Within its walls, the community will find behavioral health care, dentistry, social services, re-employment assistance, wellness classes and recovery meetings. DAP is a humanitarian organization that removes roadblocks to human potential. Our campus expansion will allow DAP to bring more than 10,000 underserved members of our community into care and onward toward a life of wellness. For more information on the Barbara Keller LOVE Building naming ceremony or to take a campus tour to learn about the future of healthcare in the Coachella Valley, contact David Brinkman, CEO, at 760-992-0418.

Go anywhere in the Coachella Valley and there is an event happening, and usually, AVSU (or Audio Visual Services Unlimited) is involved; providing sound, video projection, stage lighting, custom sets, teleprompter, and technician labor. For almost 30 years, AVSU, locally owned and operated by founder/CEO, Pete Greeson, has been keeping up with the latest technology and delivering the best customer experience to its clients. “It’s always been hard to describe what exactly it is that we do,” says Greeson, but as events are becoming more integrated into how we learn, fundraise, entertain, and socialize, “people are beginning to nod enthusiastically when you say the ‘screens at the concert.’”

Jan Lupia HAPPY 6TH ANNIVERSARY TO MAMA’S HOUSE! On July 27, 2013 Mama’s House welcomed the first resident mama. If we had a poster to share exactly what this ministry is all about, she would be front and center – a young woman who is choosing life for her unborn baby in spite of opposition and great difficulties. That Saturday we moved her into the PURPLE bedroom which she loved and selected. She could not even say “purple room” without breaking into an ear-to-ear grin. That room, in the home where love lives, was way more than she ever dreamed or imagined, as much of her childhood was extremely difficult. In spite of this, she was and is precious, forgiving and compassionate.

As wonderful as having her come to the house on that day, who could have ever known that it would become even more WONDERFUL as our youngest daughter Sara delivered her second child, our ninth grandchild, at almost the exact time! When I spoke with Sara a few hours afterwards, she told me how everything went great, in fact the delivery room was full of laughter and joy even as our baby girl, Auberlyn Joelle entered the world! I praised God there were no difficulties – it was to be a perfect day! Sara was so happy to hear the news about our first resident mama. plans to open its new 5.8-acre Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza celebrating the Tribe’s history, culture, traditions and modern day activities, in the heart of downtown Palm Springs in Fall 2020. The new Cultural Plaza is located at the corner of N. Indian Canyon Drive and E. Tahquitz Canyon Way and includes the new Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, a new state-of-the-art spa that celebrates the sacred Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring, a Gathering Plaza, gardens and an Oasis Trail. “Our new Cultural Plaza provides an incredible opportunity to share and celebrate our history, culture and traditions with this community and visitors from around the world,” Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said. “Each federally recognized tribe throughout this country has a distinct culture that includes traditions, language, historic clothing and housing styles as well as historical food and medicine preparations. We want to share that with others as well as acknowledge the fact that we are alive and well today living in the modern world.”

Inspiration for the Cultural Plaza’s design includes Agua Caliente traditions such as basket weaving and pottery (ollas) and elements found in nature including desert landscapes, Andreas Canyon rock formations, the Andreas Canyon stream and the Washingtonia filifera palm trees – the only native palm tree to the California desert. JCJ Architecture, of Phoenix, is the project designer. Penta Building Group is the general contractor. JCJ Architecture’s design concept for the cultural center reflects the Tribe’s values and ongoing commitment to the Agua Caliente people. In addition, the center draws upon the rich history of experiencing the healing mineral water. The Cultural Plaza includes numerous outdoor activity spaces, including a Gathering Plaza adjacent to the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring, originally known as Séc-he (the sound of boiling water), which serves as a commemorative focal point for the new development. Here, tribal members and visitors can celebrate community, history and pay respect to the life-giving waters that helped shape the Palm Springs region. Visitors can readily access the Gathering Plaza along landscaped terraces and pathways that serve as an extension of the Gathering Plaza. An interpretive green belt, the Oasis Trail, meanders

through the property and provides an interactive, cultural learning environment. This trail recreates, on a smaller scale, the distinctive character, geology, flora and beauty of the nearby Indian Canyons, one of the ancestral homes of the Agua Caliente. The new Museum includes approximately 48,000 square feet and will feature collections in a main gallery, changing gallery and art gallery. The new Museum, a repository for cultural artifacts, stories and history, will also include an education center and garden. The spa includes approximately 40,000 square feet to celebrate the ancient healing waters of the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring with treatments rooms, men and women’s bathhouses, a tranquility garden, a salon, fitness center and outdoor mineral pools. The water from the Agua Caliente Hot Springs is carbon dated at 12,000 years, which means it has not seen the earth’s surface since the end of the last ice age and is truly unique as it contains a mineral makeup that has not been found anywhere else in the world. The Tribe has shared the healing water with visitors for more than 120 years, and the hot spring was the first tourist attraction in Palm Springs. This new spa will be the fifth bathhouse or spa at the site, with the first one operating in the late 1880s.

BIGHORN Behind A Miracle (BAM) and donate a percentage of the evening’s sales to BIGHORN BAM. EIGHT4NINE Willie Rhine

By: Andrea Carter

What do you get when you take a hip, trend-setting Palm Springs restaurant and add a premier catering and events company? EIGHT4NINE. It’s an equation few restauranteurs are able to master: offering something for everyone in an expansive, historic space that’s been upgraded to a chic modern restaurant, while also offering uncompromising quality and impressive presentation with its popular catering division. While EIGHT4NINE restaurant and lounge has built plenty of buzz and an expansive fan base since it opened its doors in 2015, what some may not know is that 849 Fine Catering & Events is quickly gaining momentum as a top catering and events provider in the desert. EIGHT4NINE restaurant and lounge came to life in a large historic building that formerly served as Palm Springs’ first U.S. Post Office. Co-owner, Willie Rhine, explains the vision for the restaurant, which encompasses 8,000 sq. ft. at its legendary address. “I wanted a space that could hold a party for 100, a romantic dinner for 2, a pharmaceutical lecture in a private room or simply enjoy a casual meal at the lounge,” said Rhine. “At EIGHT4NINE you have the ability to do all that at the same time!” Rhine – who is a 25-year resident of Palm Springs and started his career in the restaurant business at the acclaimed Le Vallauris Restaurant in Palm Springs – opened EIGHT4NINE with his business partner, Celebrity Photographer John Paschal. EIGHT4NINE’s catering business offers everything from sophisticated tray-passed hors d’oeuvres to transcontinental chef-manned stations to stunning and flavorful dessert displays for all types of celebrations including weddings, private dinners, cocktail parties, corporate events, fundraising parties, charity galas, holiday parties, film and photo shoots, and more. All menus are creatively executed and developed by EIGHT4NINE’s talented culinary team: Executive Chef Israel Jimenez, Pastry Chef Albert Gonzalez, and Catering Manager Oscar Barajas. Rhine and his loving partner, Albert Gonzalez, are very much involved in the community.

Rhine is proud to note that EIGHT4NINE has put on some extraordinary events for organizations like Eisenhower Medical Center, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Tiffany & Co and fine dinners for the rich and famous behind the gates in country clubs such as Eldorado, Thunderbird, the Vintage and BIGHORN. EIGHT4NINE will be also be offering food and beverage service at the Palm Springs historic O’Donnell Golf Club, adding another perfect location for any event that will be available to host parties, fundraisers and weddings at the private club when it is not being used by members. Rhine, Paschal and EIGHT4NINE have helped raise thousands of dollars for charities such as the Desert Aids Project, The Palm Springs Art Museum, The Center, Loving All Animals, Sanctuary Palm Springs, Aids Assistance Program, Michael’s House, ABC Recovery Center, the Braille institute and many others. They also host/sponsor opening nights for The Palm Canyon Theater and Dezart Performs to name a few. Learn more by visiting the restaurant seven days a week at 849 North Palm Canyon in Palm Springs, or go to www.eight4nine.com.

Celebrates 60 Years

OF BEING BOLD AND THANKFUL

www.desertcornerstoneins.com

How has a Palm Springs-based advertising business, founded in 1958, managed to survive and thrive for 60 years, earning its rightful place as the Inland Empire’s premier advertising agency? Dozens of entrepreneurial ad spirits who have come and gone would love to know the answer beyond “They must be doing something right.” As we look forward to the next 60 years it is with great honor, respect and commitment to the many clients that we have served. Clients that have allowed us to partner with them, learn from them, while collaboratively working together to deliver their business goals. We are proud of their accomplishments as Client success is at the very heart of our business – without that, the Jones Agency cannot be successful. Throughout the many years – we have found extraordinary joy, passion and resourcefulness working with so many nonprofits across the Coachella Valley. Businesses that may not have large marketing budgets but who have huge hearts and commitments to those they serve. Desert AIDS Project, Palm Springs Air Museum, Guide Dogs of the Desert, the American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, the United Way, Friends of the Desert Mountains, Revivals, Coachella Valley Housing Coalition, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and so many more. Creatively demanding but nurturing, I pride myself on the team of professionals who have come to call Jones Agency home. A stunning group of talent who allows us to offer major market experience and big-picture thinking, at a price that our local businesses and non-profits can afford. When asked, I always say “You bet I take our client’s business personally. I want to grow each and every business and give them advertising options that will give

them their best return on every marketing dollar.” To stay ahead of the ever challenging tech curve, we always apply strategic thinking skills to the cutting edge digital execution of advertising, social marketing and any new forward applications in the ad world. Our belief in content creation borders on zealotry and the agency continues as a desert leader in digital display (programmatic), website, Facebook and Twitter marketing and their analytic accountability. Our fresh and effective approach has resulted in a stunning number of top industry awards. One of the most memorable was a jolt to Madison Avenue agencies also competing for a GLAAD Amplifier Award for Outstanding Social Marketing. Jones Agency took on the big guns in New York and won this top award for its “AIDS Is Not Over” public service announcement for Desert AIDS Project. Winning awards will always make my heart beat faster. Yet, there have been times when repeat trips to the podium did make me feel a little uncomfortable. We’re just so blessed. There’s good reason to sometimes squirm at awards parties. Our agency has won hundreds of awards throughout the years, including 17 American Advertising Federation ADDY Awards this last year alone. Yet, more than winning an industry award is the huge reward we feel as a team, because most of these accolades and top-honors have been given to celebrate the great work done for the many non-profits we represent. So with that in mind as we enter our 61st year of success, I just wanted to take a minute, personally to thank you all for being a significant part of our ongoing Jones Agency story.

Sincerely, Kyle Radke and the Jones Agency Team

An important charitable project this year stems from a unique partnership between the Agua Caliente Tribe and the Palm Springs Unified School District and its Foundation. The 3rd grade Agua Caliente curriculum launched in classrooms this year and teaches more than 1,800 children about the Agua Caliente people and its past and present times through 10 lessons in one unit of study that meets state education standards. The project’s next phase, developing Agua Caliente specific curriculum for 8th and 11th grade students, is already in the works and will launch spring 2020. The curriculum development team for this phase includes Tribal Council Members Reid D. Milanovich and Anthony W. Purnel, along with Anderson, and the School District’s Michael Walbridge, Russell Eves, Malyssa McCubbin, Corinne Griswold and Cathie Sowell along with Ellen Goodman, of the Foundation. “This curriculum is invaluable,” Anderson says. “The Tribe and its partners have all stepped up in big ways to create an opportunity for Palm Springs students to learn how to reflect on their own culture and to begin to appreciate and understand the Tribe’s culture and way of life. A.J. Steinberg If your fundraising event is losing guests’ interest and isn’t making money, A.J. Steinberg wants to give you a big hug -and then she wants to sit you down to help get your event back on track to success. As a nonprofit event strategist who has raised millions of dollars over her 20-year career, she knows that most organizations’ events are leaving money on the table and missing the boat when it comes to longterm guest engagement. “It isn’t their fault events fail.” she says, “They are trained to be fundraisers, not event producers.” Over two decades producing galas and fundraisers with her event company Masquerade Events, A.J. happily watched her clients’ events grow and prosper. However, sadly, she kept hearing about scores of other organizations whose events were underperforming. “It was frustrating knowing that with just a little help and guidance all these events could have been winners. It wasn’t time and effort that was lacking, it was know-how and experience.” The problem was, there was no place for organizations to turn to in order to learn the key basics of creating profitable and engaging events. And so, she started Queen Bee Fundraising; a company dedicated to teaching the art of event planning to nonprofit professionals. Through consulting, webinars and workshops, A.J. brings her event planning expertise to organizations around the globe. Jo Rosen When you can’t find answers to important life challenges, what do you do? After her mother, then five years later, her future husband Alan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Jo Rosen began by seeking out experts and people that had been through similar experiences. She wanted to know what living with Parkinson’s meant for each of them. Jo began the journey by reaching out to all the major Parkinson’s Organizations. She found that fundraising is what they wanted because of her background owning a financial management firm. She also found these organizations were not equipped to recommend support groups for caregivers, alternatives to traditional medical care, or coping with a future-facing chronic illness. She began searching for experts in life planning - financial planning - medical care - memory retention - and self-care. The week after her wedding in 1990, Jo decided that her efforts in organizing a major Parkinson’s organization’s symposium at UCLA were not going to provide solutions to their needs. She felt that if this was missing for her, then it was likely that thousands of others were facing the same challenge. So, she started what is now the 501(c)(3), Parkinson’s Resource Organization (PRO).

Carolyn Martino Carolyn H. Martino is a founding member and current Vice President of the Coachella Valley Youth Hockey Foundation, which is a non-profit organization wholly dedicated to providing financial support to the youth hockey players and their families in the Coachella Valley in order to allow greater access to the sport of hockey and expanded opportunities for player growth and development. As a parent of a 13 year old boy currently in his seventh season of competitive travel hockey, Carolyn recognized the tremendous benefits for athletes and families to get to experience the joy of being part of a team, and the attendant lessons of discipline and organization that crossover to all aspects of growth and development. Seeking to promote and share these valuable experiences that participation in youth sports has to offer, the CVYHF was formed to address the need in the community to increase accessibility to youth hockey, which is currently ranked number one in annual expense according to a 2018 study by The Aspen Institute. With overall participation in all youth sports declining, CVYHF was formed to help create a way to promote access and make the endeavor more affordable to more youth athletes. The organization assists families with all aspects of participation, whether they have athletes that play for a team now or they are just learning to play, through scholarships, donations for tournament fees, and an online gear store. With the anticipated new hockey arena slated for Palm Springs in Fall 2021, CVYHF looks forward to assisting more families and spreading the passion for hockey across the Valley.

Dr. Jenna LeComte-Hinely Dr. Jenna LeComte-Hinely started at HARC, Inc. (Health Assessment and Research for Communities) as the Director of Research and Evaluation in 2012. She was promoted to CEO in 2015 and has grown HARC into an essential part of the Coachella Valley nonprofit sector. HARC is a Palm Desert-based nonprofit that advances quality of life by helping community leaders use objective research and analysis to turn data into action. In short, Jenna and her team are “data geeks” who use research and evaluation to help nonprofits do their best work. Every three years, HARC conducts a telephone survey, known as the Coachella Valley Community Health Survey, and provides the findings back to the community. Hundreds of nonprofits use this free data to prioritize needs, design programs, and strengthen their funding requests. Nonprofits who use this data to support their funding requests have brought in millions of dollars to the Valley, which has allowed them to provide services such as meal delivery for home-bound seniors, mental health services for children, and HIV testing for all. HARC’s latest triennial survey is underway and results will be released to the public in early 2020. Beyond the triennial survey, HARC also provides research and evaluation consulting services to other agencies. HARC’s services include community needs assessments, program evaluations, community engagement, and analyzing existing data, among others. Jenna and her team make data easy to understand and act on, allowing local nonprofits to make evidence-based decisions that improve lives effectively & efficiently. Beyond her work at HARC, Jenna also serves on the Boards of Borrego Health, HARP-PS, and Joslyn Center. Dr. Jenna LeComte-Hinely, PhD Chief Executive Officer HARC, Inc. Making Your Greatest Charitable Impact When was the last time you changed or impacted someone’s life? You might already make a difference by volunteering your time in the community, which is crucial to helping the many programs and people in our two-county region. What about helping in a different way — a way that would help forever? At The Community Foundation (TCF) we’ve been inspiring and strengthening our community through the generosity of our donors for over 78 years. In partnership with TCF, our donors make gifts to charitable organizations throughout the counties of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties and beyond. We help ensure that their charitable giving is as effective and meaningful as possible. We listen to people’s passions and work together to find the best way to support causes they care about. In 2018, TCF distributed over $12.7 million in grants, of which $3.5 million was for scholarships and education. Our donors’ generosity fed the hungry, gave shelter to homeless families, assisted the elderly, bought medicine for the uninsured, awarded scholarships to underrepresented students, supported the arts, cared for the environment and protected animals. When it comes to scholarships, three new funds in the Coachella Valley are leading the way. In 2016, the Andalusia Country Club Education Fund was established at TCF to provide scholarships to club employees and their dependent children. Members of the country club contribute to the fund which makes the scholarships possible. Since inception, the fund has awarded $86,000 to 25 recipients who are pursuing their education at an accredited vocational school, community college or four-year university. The second fund is Rancho La Quinta Country Club Education Fund, also established in 2016, with the same mission and purpose. Since inception, the Fund has awarded $95,000 in scholarships. The final group helping to change lives is PGA West, where members came forward to establish the PGA West Education Fund in

2018. Earlier this year they awarded $69,000 in scholarships. The significance of all three funds is that the employees and their dependent children continue to benefit from the club members’ generosity. It’s clear -- Our donors’ generosity builds community. The good news is you don’t have to be a millionaire to impact someone’s life. TCF provides a way for donors of all means to give back to people in our region, including making a gift to any one of the 390 funds we manage. You can visit our website to view a list of our funds or those funds created to serve the desert communities or organizations, among others. To support our work and presence in the Coachella Valley, TCF recently appointed Joe Staley, Jr. as our new Regional Charitable Giving Officer. Staley served as the Development Director of The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences in Georgia. Prior to The Hambidge Center, Staley worked for an environmental nonprofit called Trees Atlanta. Working from TCF’s Palm Desert office, Staley’s responsibilities will be to lead TCF’s asset development activities, cultivate donor relationships and provide donor services in the Coachella Valley.

The 18th annual Bishop’s Golf Classic will take place on December 5, 2019 at the PGA West golf course in La Quinta, CA. Celebrating

10 Years of Public Relations

A decade ago,

& Marketing in the Coachella Valley

Andrea Carter was pondering the pros and cons of taking the leap to open her own PR/marketing business. After moving to the desert 8 years prior from Minnesota and climbing the ranks at Kiner Communications – from account executive to VP, Client Services – Andrea had done her due diligence to become integrated into the community. She finally decided to go for it – but then came the next dilemma: naming her company. “I wanted to come up with a clever name since that’s what marketing is all about, but I had worked hard to build relationships, and I knew I had developed name recognition in the business community. So I decided it would be best to simply call my firm ‘Andrea Carter & Associates’ and then get creative with my logo, colors and website,” Andrea explained. Considered a multi-skilled marketing professional with senior-level proficiencies in all facets of marketing, Andrea offers public relations, copywriting, strategic marketing, social media, event management, radio production, crisis communications and sometimes acts as a spokesperson for clients that require it. Andrea partners with a variety of “associates” for marketing skills not in her range of capabilities – such as graphic design, photography and TV production. Andrea is the pro bono Public Relations Director and member of the Board for the Patrick Warburton Celebrity Golf Tournament benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and served a 3-year term as president of the Sheltering Sisters Auxiliary Fundraising Board for Shelter From The Storm. She spent 5 years on the Board of Desert Arc, and served on the Boards for Women Leaders Forum and the Girlfriend Factor, as well. Continued on page 76

501(c)3 VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Bringing a love of reading and the joys of learning to our most disadvantaged young children By DeAnn Lubell There is an old saying that sometimes it only takes one or two people to make a difference in our unsteady world – Roberta and Clay Klein are two such people. In 2003, the Kleins moved from Northern California to the Coachella Valley. They were appalled to discover that in the far eastern section of the Coachella Valley, home to thousands of field workers, third world living conditions existed. The lack of proper education for their children was a major contributing factor. What could these two new desert residents do to help? They immediately met with desert leaders and learned that some of the children were growing up with very little education and quasi-conversational

English. The situation was dire. Statistics have proven that if a child is not reading at grade level by the third grade, he or she will mostly like not finish high school. Uneducated underprivileged children often fail to succeed in mainstream society and end up heading down an undesirable path as a result. The Kleins were told there was a need for Englishspeaking role models for the children. People needed to go to the remote schools and work with the kids one-on-one or in small groups under the teacher’ direction to help them with their reading and understanding of English. No English was being spoken at home in over 90% of the families. The Kleins learned that the heads of families wanted to keep their Hispanic culture alive, but realized that their children needed to Continued on page 78

The Mission has grown so very much in just the last few years, and they are serving more people than ever before. With a new campus built in 2011, a shelter expansion in 2015, and taking on three cooling center projects in summer 2019, CVRM has extended its service area to the entire Coachella Valley. Darla Burkett, Executive Director of CVRM says, “We are so very grateful to the Coachella Valley community for all their strong support as we expand our services valley-wide. We are now serving hundreds of people on a daily basis, assisting them in transitioning into independent living.”

CVRM currently operates an Emergency Shelter and two long-term 6-month long residential programs on its main campus in Indio. They also accommodate mothers with children in their Family Shelter. Such classes would include, but are not limited to, math, English, financial management, grief recovery, computer literacy, work search, as well as, processing and parenting classes. Five Fixes for Fabulous Fundraisers An event strategist shares her top tips for success by A.J. Steinberg of Queen Bee Fundraising Tip 1 – Build your event right

Before jumping into event production, it is crucial to pinpoint your target demographic, meaning who you want to see attending your event. To ensure that your event will appeal to this specific group, you must consider their interests and abilities, both physical and financial. For example, if you are an environmental organization, you most likely have an active support base who prefers to be outdoors rather than at a sit-down black-tie event. Younger demographics usually don’t have the financial resources for higher ticket prices, and older crowds need to be seated with easy access for walkers and wheelchairs.

Tip 2 – Choose an amazing honoree Your honoree should be a cash cow for your event. If you choose the right person, their participation can rev up sales of sponsorships, tribute ads and tickets. The best honorees are strong supporters who have contributed to your organization in a meaningful way and have not been honored previously by other organizations. Avoid choosing politicians or individuals affiliated with other charitable organizations as honorees, as they have tapped out their fundraising capabilities for their own causes.

Tip 3 – Recruit a superstar event committee A.J. Steinberg The secrets to successful fundraising events seem to elude most organizations. Here, nonprofit event strategist A.J. Steinberg of Queen Bee Fundraising shares some game-changing tips on how to get special events to their peak performance.

Build your event right

Be ready with a post-event cultivation plan

Tips for Fabulous Fundraisers

Craft a stage program to inspire

tr J

Tip 4 – Craft a stage program to inspire Research show that fundraising event guests are often bored and don’t fully understand the scope of the nonprofit’s mission. This happens because too little time is spent sequencing and scripting the event’s stage program. A stage program may not be on a stage – it could on done in a living room or on a golf course – but it is the portion of the event when you speak to your guests and make the case for support. My advice is to spend far less time on the silent auction and far more time crafting a stage program that opens hearts and wallets.

Tip 5 – Be ready with a post-event cultivation plan

1

5

Your event committee is key to your event’s success. Not only will they help with planning and procurement of auction items, but they also are your best marketing tool. Choose your committee chairs carefully with eye on their influence and reach in their social and business circles. I prefer two event chairs as it doubles the impact of having their names listed on invitations and event materials. When committee members are engaged and appreciated they help solicit sponsorships and auction items, and their enthusiastic word-of-mount promotion of your event is key to helping you maximize your ticket sales.

2

You did it! Your event was a huge hit, and you have succeeded in convincing guests that your organization is worthy of their support. Now, post-event, is the crucial time for starting the cultivation process to turn those attendees into supporters. Have a well-conceived post event communication plan ready in advance to parlay your success into new supporters. The sweet spot for starting post-event communication is one- to two-days after the event’s completion.

Choose an amazing honoree

What climate change may mean for native habitat and how you can help UC Riverside researchers in the field.

By Maggie Downs

When Cameron Barrows and Lynn Sweet hit the trails, they’re doing it in the name of science. As the research ecologist coordinating the Center for Conservation Biology’s Desert Studies Initiative, Barrows helms several projects examining the effects of environmental change within the desert. Meanwhile Sweet, a UC Riverside plant ecologist, has most recently been the project lead on a study that looks at the effects of climate change on Joshua trees. Both are based out of the Center for Conservation Biology at UC Riverside-Palm Desert Center, and their work has been recognized all over the world. The center is also home to the California Naturalist Program’s “Desert Sands and Sky Islands” course, the first course in the statewide program with a focus on desert ecosystems. Students learn more about this unique area and discover opportunities for community science projects. In a world that’s getting warmer and locally drier, one of the projects Barrows has been focused on is how plants and animals are shifting, (or not), along the elevation and East-West gradients of rainfall and temperature of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. Accompanied by local community scientists, Barrows and his team have identified anywhere from six to 12 plots along each of the trails that provide access to

the Monument’s rugged terrain. Each plot is centered on “focal” plants, plants that they will return to year after year to assess change. At each focal plant the scientists take a 10-meter rope, secure it to the plant, and walk in a circle around the plant, counting all the flora and fauna within that circle. Each plant within the circle is classed as “adult,” “seedling,” or “dead.” The project was inspired by research conducted by scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008, which showed plants in general were shifting up the mountain about 150 to 350 feet. “We wanted to see, 10 years later, following a 5-year drought, if plants were continuing to shift.” Barrows says. “The hypothesis was that since it had gotten warmer, the shift would continue.” Sweet, whose findings were published recently in Ecosphere, one of the premier journals of the Ecological Society of America, said she hopes the study inspires people to take protective environmental action. Her team found that Joshua trees have been migrating to higher elevation parts of the park with cooler weather and more moisture in the ground. In hotter, drier areas, the adult trees aren’t producing as many younger plants, and the ones they do produce aren’t surviving. “The fate of these unusual, amazing trees is in all of our hands,” she said. “Their numbers will decline, but how much depends on us.” The Center for Conservation Biology is a University of California, Riverside organized research unit with activities and scientists established at the UCR Palm Desert Center. The mission is to assist in the conservation and restoration of species and ecosystems by facilitating the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of scientific information. The center proactively identifies new research priorities in conservation biology and inaugurate new research programs — the center’s faculty and scholars do not create policy, but they do generate objective scientific information that may be used by others in developing policy. “We facilitate research that looks at the effects of humans on the landscape and tries to find solutions so humans and natural diversity can co-exist,” Barrows says. If local people would like to get involved, “we’ve embraced this idea of citizen (or community) science,” Barrows says.

That is, members of the general public can work collaboratively with scientists on specific projects to collect and analyze data. “Citizen science multiplies our ability to conduct important research, but it also increases public awareness, and we all reap those benefits,” Barrows says. “Conservation biology is practical in its application, not purely theoretical. We’re looking at how can we solve our problems. “Climate change is not fake news, it’s reality. And there are solutions.” The project within the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument is emblematic of that. The 2008 research simply had one statistic for the entire mountain, Barrows explains, while the actual shift of plants and animals depends on where you are on the mountains, and if you’re on a north-facing or south-facing slope. “What we’re finding is that for plants like brittlebush, one of the most common shrubs across our desert landscapes, that at the lowest elevations there is no recruitment at all, and the dead plants outnumber the live ones,” Barrows says. “At higher elevations, we start finding some recruitment, and live plants outnumber the dead ones. We’re also finding higher percentages toward Palm Springs, which is cooler and wetter, while the effects are much more severe toward the La Quinta Cove trails.” The overarching goal is to find the places where animals and plants are able to survive climate change. “From that standpoint, these become important areas, so we keep them well-protected from problems like fire or invasive species,” Barrows says. “If we focus on and protect those areas, plants and animals have a chance to survive in the future.” Learn more about UCR’s Center for Conservation Biology and how you can help with their important research at https://palmdesert.ucr.edu/research.Visit the center online at http://ccb.ucr.edu.

Mike O’Donahue, the new Fund Development Officer at the Desert Recreation Foundation based in Indio, credits the longevity of his fundraising career to motivation from his kids. “I was chaperoning a group of 13 and 14 year-old soccer players home from a tournament when I overheard my son’s best friend ask him, ‘What’s the deal with your dad working for a nonprofit – does that mean your dad doesn’t get paid for his job…?’ to which my son replied, ‘I’m not really sure how to explain it all myself but this is what I can tell you: instead of helping people make money, my dad helps people make a difference.’ O’Donahue paused for a moment and offered, “I figure that if that’s what my kids think about what I do for a living, it’s well worth a life-long career.” O’Donahue has been a nonprofit fundraiser for almost thirty years now. Born in Southern California, raised in the rural Midwest, and educated on the east coast, he figures he has “a nice balance of all the sensibilities of those areas.” With long-term ties to the Coachella Valley, he settled here at the beginning of the year and was soon offered the position of Fund Development Officer at the foundation. Desert Recreation Foundation raises funds to support the parks, programs, and recreation activities of Coachella Valley’s Desert Recreation District. Working with the foundation’s Executive Director, Kevin Kalman (who is also the General Manager of the Desert Recreation District), O’Donahue is charged with taking the foundation’s strategic plan and implementing a full-spectrum of fundraising campaigns: annual giving, grants, major donor and legacy giving programs, as well as managing the foundation’s special events. Throughout his career, O’Donahue has worked primarily for social service agencies providing safety-net support in the areas of health and wellness, support to children and families, and with a little bit of time supporting historic preservation organizations. “I started out to be an architect and worked for a few years for a firm focusing on historic preservation on the east coast. But after I started graduate school in Boston and began volunteering to work for a nonprofit agency there, I was bitten by the nonprofit bug and never went back to architecture.” Along the way he ended up back in California Continued on page 76

Judi Olivas OUTSTANDING FUNDRAISING PROFESSIONAL Judi Olivas’ giving heart has guided her from the beginning of her career to change the world for the better. She began her career thirty years ago as a frontline social worker and advocate on behalf of victims of domestic violence and child abuse. Her work in social justice, crisis intervention and community advocacy were key to a deep understanding and respect for social innovation and the impact created by social change philanthropy. When Judi moved to the Coachella Valley in 1998, she joined the leadership team at the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert (CDMOD), where she served as Associate Executive Director for 15 years. In addition to her operational responsibilities, Judi learned fundraising on the job, taking the lead in the annual giving program, grant writing, securing sponsorships and planning fundraising events. Through her management and efforts, the museum raised more than $2 million. Under Judi’s leadership, CDMOD was the recipient of the National “Good 2 Grow” award for establishing healthy family programs to combat childhood obesity.

This experience prepared her for the lead development role she assumed when she joined the Joslyn Center as Director of Development and Marketing. There, over the course of four years, she revitalized the development program, secured funding and assisted in the creation of programs vital to the center’s senior client base. She restored relationships with lapsed donors, introduced key funding for the “Live Well, Be Well” program and raised more than $900,000 through grant initiatives, campaigns and special events such as the Annual Fashion Show. In 2018, Judi was named Director of Development for OneFuture Coachella Valley, creating a ground-up development department structure to support funding for a $1.5 million scholarship program. Then, in 2019, she was appointed to the newly created position of Development Director for the Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, where she works alongside the CEO and Board of Directors to ensure the long-term stability of this vital community resource. During her first 4 months on the job, she organized and directed the annual “Faux Fur Ball,” held at the Palm Springs Air Museum, which netted more than $200,000, double the previous year’s total.

As a stage manager for a number of high-profile events in the desert, Andrea has also worked closely with numerous celebrities at a level of professionalism that is respected by many. The best compliment she feels she has ever received was from one of the directors who has often brought her on board for these type of events. “This is my take on Andrea: Punctual, versatile, hardworking, quick learner, knowledgeable, self-reliant, team player, team leader, even tempered, does not panic, asks good questions, good communicator, professional, and possesses a good sense of humor,” said William Finlay, an Emmy Award-winning director. “Andrea has been one of my senior stage managers for the Palm Springs International Film Festival Honors Gala and the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, and during that time, she has never let me, or the show, down. At the end of the day, and some of them go quite long, she is still a good person to know and spend time with. the months of preparation that were required after signing the lease on Mama’s House, December 1, 2012. There was so much to do … from decorating and fundraising to the agonizing details of licensing, policies, procedures, manuals, and personnel. The last months of the pregnancy are most difficult because you feel like everything is ready, but you must wait for the big day to arrive. And likewise, what testing of our patience we endured, and then … Daughter Sara gave birth three weeks early and our first resident mama arrived at Mama’s House – both within minutes of each other - and both in God’s perfect timing, not ours. This year, we celebrate the 105 women and 111 babies who have been in Mama’s House during these six years as I await the impending birth of my 10th grandchild, Elijah James. The Coachella Valley, as it was in 1991, had fewer hotels and nowhere near the level of homegrown events drawing thousands annually. It was “definitely not the year-round destination it’s becoming.” Across the last 28 years, AVSU has maintained its status in Southern California’s vacation destination, as the go-to for audio visual production services. Whether it’s providing a stage crew for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, full AV setups for the first two Comic Con Palm Springs conventions and Palm Springs’ first Palm Springs Fashion Week (including building a 90’ runway over the pool at the Riviera Palm Springs), or running weekly cameras and video at some of the valley’s best casinos— AVSU has equipment and staff going anywhere, at any time. AVSU gives access to the latest in-demand rental items, like LED video walls, laser projectors, broadcast cameras, digital mixing consoles, stage decking, lighting truss, LED lighting fixtures as well as technicians with over 25 years of experience to deliver, setup, and operate them. Working directly with individuals and organizations on their public and private events, corporations holding their teambuilding, training, and awards ceremonies, and being a sub-rental and sub-labor resource for other companies, puts AVSU in unique territory. “We’re diversified and always looking for more ways to give people what they’re looking for,” continues Greeson. In addition to a screen and projector or microphone and speaker, webcasting programs have become popular. Sometimes a more budget friendly option to traveling attendees out for a meeting, AVSU can set up a full AV presentation and then stream it to a secure server online for multiple users to watch live or playback later. Greeson is extremely proud of his team, which consists of six fulltime employees working out of their Palm Desert warehouse and a call sheet of trusted freelancers who travel wherever the jobs take them. “Going out and getting work for myself and others was how I started and everything we do now has grown out of that desire to get those of us that rely on this for our livelihoods, more work.” Greeson, the son of a theatrical manager and one-time president of the Harlem Globetrotters, is passionate about a career path he hadn’t envisioned for himself. “Corporate meetings and events are really the step-child of conventional entertainment.” “I wanted to be a screenwriter, but instead I get to do this everyday and everyday is exciting.” AVSU continues to persevere through constant changes to the technological landscape and through economic turbulence. “Client satisfaction and a positive audience response will always be the most important factor that keeps us going” and “our team excels at making our clients look great.” Visit www.avsu.com n MAMA’S HOUSE

On July 27, 2013, Mama’s House opened its doors to its first resident Mom. Mama’s House offers a safe, supportive, loving, and nurturing residential environment for women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy with no place to live and no means of support. Today, there are so many good things happening at Mama’s House, as this nonprofit celebrates its sixth anniversary. Over these years, Mama’s House has welcomed more than 200 residents and their babies. At Hope Center, the educational and counseling extension of Mama’s House, the organization offers additional services to the residents, their baby’s fathers, and often their families, while also providing many of these same services to the community-at-large. These services include, but are not limited to parenting, job and life skills, domestic violence and anger management classes, support groups for those wounded by abuse, addiction, abortion, and more. Hope Center has partnered with the Coachella Valley Adult School to offer High School Diploma and GED programs. Mama’s House is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Tax ID# 45-4384613.

learn English to succeed. Father Howard Lincoln, a man deeply concerned with the

poverty and living conditions in the far eastern part of the valley agreed to let the Kleins form a ministry at that church to recruit English-speaking role models, tutors and mentors. “On two separate days in the fall of 2004,” said Roberta, “we took prospective volunteers out on the bus to meet the children and the principal at a school in Mecca. Two hundred people went mostly out of curiosity and fifty of them committed to go regularly for one morning a week. We have just completed our 14th fiscal year. During this time, we provided 752 active volunteer English speaking tutors who logged 24,233 hours of contributed time to 14 local elementary schools serving children with language barriers, living in high poverty areas. Our primarily educated retired professionals, who volunteer continually, express the satisfaction they get from working with the children and dedicated teachers. It is a win-win program. It is both a rewarding experience for the retired citizens and aids the potential for student success.” Help us help local disadvantaged children develop to the maximum potential through literacy by donating time or funds. I look forward to working with the Board and the talented staff of the McCallum to bring great entertainment and enriching cultural and educational experiences to the entire Coachella Valley community.

Mitch’s 20 years with the Theatre, he not only brought world class entertainment to our audiences, but was an impressively effective fundraiser and leader for the McCallum. The McCallum Theatre is, in a sense, at the zenith of its history and Mitch Gershenfeld has played a major role in making that happen. “I know the McCallum will be in excellent hands under the leadership of Terry Dwyer,” said Gershenfeld. “He has the background and experience to move the McCallum into the future.” ABOUT MCCALLUM THEATRE

Dwyer, prior to joining the Segerstrom Center, was managing director of Houston’s Tony Award®-winning Alley Theater, and before that he served as managing director of the Tony Award®winning La Jolla Playhouse for 13 years. Earlier, Dwyer was also managing director of the Circle Repertory Company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians and held positions at the Mark Taper Forum, Yale Repertory Theater and Circle in the Square Theater. Dwyer holds an MFA degree from the Yale School of Drama, an MA from the University of Missouri and a B.A. from University of Notre Dame.

Located in beautiful Palm Desert, California, the McCallum Theatre was introduced to the world by Bob Hope with a nationally televised concert on Jan. 2, 1988. McCallum Theatre was founded with the mission to provide desert residents and visitors a world-class performing arts venue diverse in its programming, patrons, and educational opportunities. The world’s best artists have appeared at the McCallum, the valley’s premier performing arts venue, ranging from rock and pop icons and dance legends to classical soloists and orchestras, as well as the finest Broadway shows and many of the most cherished stars of stage, screen, television, and song.

Matzner extended the gratitude of the Board of Trustees to outgoing President and CEO Mitch Gershenfeld. While Gershenfeld, who has done an outstanding job these last seven years as President and CEO, achieving historic revenue numbers year after year, is retiring, he has agreed to continue working with Terry, booking performances through the 2021 season as he has done in the past. We are delighted to continue working with Mitch in this capacity as Terry commences his new role. We can’t say enough about Mitch’s many contributions to the success of the McCallum. During

The McCallum has consistently been ranked as one of the top-selling theaters in the world by industry publication Pollstar. McCallum Theatre Education, the Theatre’s educational outreach division, was founded in 1997. Its annual $1,000,000 program offers intensive and enriching arts literacy experiences for more than 40,000 children, parents, and educators annually, both at the McCallum and in area classrooms. More than 2,000 individual classroom workshops will be facilitated by McCallum Theatre Education teaching artists during the 2019-2020 season.
