PREFACE: First off, I wish to thank the many pastors, ministers, and various congregants, all of whom have been asking me to address this serious concern that is festering worldwide within Christian Houses of Worship. Per their request, this investigative article is dedicated, and also to the various religious scholars and antiquity experts whose data and guidance were indispensable.

a shocked ‘live’ nationwide television audience: “Televangelist, Jesse Duplantis, says that God told him he needed a (fourth) private luxury plane and he’s asking his followers to once-again foot the bill for the $54-million price tag!”

Pastor Duplantis explained to a stunned, disbelieving, viewing audience numbering in the millions across America and on multiple subsequent television broadcasts (including his own personal website): “You know, I’ve owned three luxury jets in my life and I’ve used them, and just burnin’ ‘em up, for the Lord Jesus Christ.” (This

The broadcast would spill over to various other live primetime newscasts and would result in a giant tsunami-wave of criticism and embarrassment from both religious and secular factions, here and eventually from around the globe.

For many concerned observers, this is not a singular incident, but a fastemerging and accelerating number of

what many secular and religious critics now call “prosperity pastors.”

But long before the designation of “prosperity pastors,” there have been excessively-rich men of the pulpit and various religious leaders for as long as most people can remember, and as far back as antiquity.

They supported their lavish lifestyles with a temple tax which every Jew was required to pay.”

HISTORICAL LEGACY CONTINUES WITH WORLD’S RICHEST CHRISTIAN LEADERS TODAY! Amazingly, this super-rich legacy phenomenon is nothing new.

However, what is alarming to the worldwide Christian religious communities is the accelerating and shocking exponential growth of ultra-wealthy pastors who are no longer the exception to the rule, but, are fast-becoming among the most powerful, influential, and wealthy people in all the world today.

The (average) annual salary of a pastor in the United States, according to the most recent nationwide data only six weeks ago (as of November 29, 2021) is $100,891 -- but the range typically falls between $82,926 and $114, 342. The money you save buys a ton of cab trips.

The thought of not having a vehicle parked in the garage or driveway makes most people shudder. The thought of conspiracies, government meddling, foreign control, distribution problems, and a host of leaned over and said into the phone, "Eric, turn that phone off and come back to bed."

Eric doesn't use his cell phone in public any longer.

A physical therapist and chiropractor by profession, Loomis was the Health Director at MGM studios where he regularly looked after the fitness needs of Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Shirley Temple -- in fact, every actor under contract to the studio.

GROWING NUMBER OF “SUPER RICH PASTORS” NOW A GLOBAL CONCERN. In the case of televangelist, Pastor Jesse Duplantis, he is not alone, nor should his influential power be minimized or underestimated.

In the view of many, the 72-year-old preacher from the Christian Evangelical Charismatic movement, has been empowered to found the Jesse Duplantis Worldwide Ministries (JDM) headquartered in America, but with international branches across the globe, which includes the United Kingdom in Europe, as well as the continent of Australia, Down Under – all tax exempt – and all of which have made Duplantis among the wealthiest pastors worldwide.

As such, countless other pastors in good standing and with far greater credible and altruistic lifestyles, have distanced themselves and critiqued Pastor DuPlantis in severe rhetoric.

A report at the Valley Center History Museum, shows that before his job at MGM, Loomis treated the likes of Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. One client, a clothing designer, contacted a cousin at the movie studio suggesting he be hired.

Loomis' career in bodybuilding and fitness earned him a cover story in Strength and Health magazine. His work in physical therapy continued after moving to Valley Center where he lived at Skyline Ranch Mobile Home Park on Paradise Mountain Road. He developed a correspondence course called "Be as fit as the stars of the screen" in which, after determining the physical condition of those who wrote to him, he set up exercise and diet programs to meet their individual needs.

GOD ALLEGEDLY SPOKE TO PASTOR DUPLANTIS, TELLING HIM HE NEEDS A 4TH LUXURY PASSENGER JET. On one news telecast, Duplantis continued to clarify to his vast viewing audience on primetime TV news that God, Himself, personally spoke to him about getting a 4th luxury jet aircraft, allegedly commanding him: “It’s time for an upgrade!”

According to Pastor Duplantis, he said the Holy God even told him what kind of luxury jet to have his congregations buy him this time.

Regarding this fourth luxury jet, the pastor quoted God as such: “He said: ‘I want you to believe in me for a Falcon 7X.’ And I answered Him -- ‘Okay!’”

Pastor Duplantis said God wants him to have the ultra-luxurious Falcon 7X so that he can preach to more people around the world aboard the $54million dollar aircraft.

After cutting down on the length of your trips, reduce the number of trips. When you’re not driving, you’re not using gasoline.

Mechanics and motorists pretty well agree that speeding slurps up the gasoline. “Speed limit” driving not only is safer, it saves you money.

At the pump, you don’t always have to buy the highest-rated premium gasoline. Your vehicle manual will tell you the octane-level your vehicle requires.

Keep your tires inflated properly.

Under-inflated rubber causes “drag” and requires more fuel to propel your vehicle. Lift the hood and inspect your air filter. If it’s dirty, replace it. If you don’t know where it is, check your manual.

Check the oil level. And the transmission fluid level. Adding oil or fluid when required is no more complicated than pouring coffee into a cup.

COLLISION CLAIMS LIFE OF ESCONDIDO PEDESTRIAN On December 27, 2021, at 6:49 p.m., the Escondido Police Department received a report of a crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian on Midway Drive north of Valley Parkway.

The preliminary investigation indicated a silver Kia Optima was driving north on Midway Drive and struck a pedestrian who was crossing east on Midway Drive between Valley Parkway and Washington Avenue. The male driver of the Kia has been identified as a 36-year-old Escondido resident and the male pedestrian was an 82-year-old Escondido resident. Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision, however weather may have played a role.

This crash is under investigation by Officer Adan Martinez of the Escondido Police Department Traffic Division. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Officer Martinez 760-839-4729.

Escondido City Council Member Openly Challenges Mayor Paul McNamara Mike Morasco, Escondido City Council Member, says that it’s time that Mayor Paul McNamara be reomoved as the Escondido City SANDAG representative and replaced with a representatie the represents the Escondido City Council majority and will vote accordingly.

Morasco was quoted in a year-end

Q&A with the Escondido Times Advocate as saying, “Our city deserves a rep that truly represents the city majority and one who votes for the benefit, nt the dtriment, of our citizens.

Morasco and other members of the council opposed the recent SANDAG proposal for a controversial road tax. Mayor McNamara voted to support SANDAG’s proposal and it passed by a narrow margin.

The Paper also strongly opposed this proposal, as did many North County residents.

SANDAG has already begun construction projects but no one seems to know where the money is coming from.

Fentanyl trafficking is out of control

Assembly Mebmer Marie Waldron (75th Assembly District) expressed her deep concerns about the deadly drug Fenanyl bering trafficked in our area.

She points out that according to the CDC, over 100,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States in the 12 months ending in April, 2021. That’s a new record, exceeding the previous record of 93,331 in 2020. That is not acceptable. Much of this increase is driven

by Fentanyl, a drug similar to morphine, but 50 to 100 times more potent.

We have a couple celebrities who lived here in the town where I live, Escondido, Ca. One was Neil Hamilton who played Police Commissioner Gordon on the Batman TV series. He lived in an apartment complex near Washington and Ash, about a mile from my home.

I never met or knew him.

Who is Dick Beals you say?

You will have known him as "Speedy Alka-Seltzer" from his many tv commercials. Or, perhaps, as the voice of "Gumby," the cartoon character.

I first met Dick when we were b o t h Rotarians in t h e Escondido R o t a r y Club.

In time, he became a client. When he was not recording commercials for Speedy Alka-Seltzer, or for Gumby, or for many other tv animation characters, he lived and worked in Escondido at his own advertising agency.

Due to a glandular condition, Dick was never taller than 4' 6" tall and weighed only 70 lbs.

Old time residents and business people of Escondido might also remember Bobby Green. Bobby was something of a celebrity himself, being a Gospel Singer.

That’s why she introduced Assembly Bill 653, which recently became law, to support Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs for persons incarcerated in county jails and under community supervision.

While effective, treatment is just one tool, those trafficking in poisons like fentanyl need to face severe legal consequences. Over the past several years, legislation has been repeatedly introduced in both the Assembly and Senate to crack down on drug trafficking.

The bills would have substantially increased penalties, including imprisonment in county jails for up to 13 years. Other legislation would have allowed a manufacturer or distributor of controlled substances, including fentanyl, to be charged with voluntary manslaughter or murder, if trafficking resulted in death.

One of her bills, AB 3105, made trafficking a detectable amount of fentanyl subject to life imprisonment without possibility of parole (depending on circumstances) if a death or great bodily injury resulted from use of the drug. But AB 1305, like most recent legislation to increase penalties for drug trafficking, failed in the Public Safety Committee.

While Sacramento legislators seem to agree that those addicted to fentanyl and other substances should receive treatment, the majority can’t bring themselves to increase penalties for the drug dealers responsible for so much death and devastation

Ol' Bobby Green was a big ol' country boy from Arkansas . . . with a great big smile, a mouthful of beautiful teeth and a propensity for wearing garish sport coats that were . . . sometimes, chartreuse! Wide lapels on both shirt and sport coat . .he stood out in a crowd.

One day I had taken Dick Beals to Love's Wood Pit Barbecue for lunch.

Love's was a great little restaurant, friendly staff, good food, and quiet enough you could have an easy conversation with business clients.

It happened that Bobby Green was also having lunch that day and as he was leaving the restaurant he passed by our table, paused, looked down at Dick Beals and with that great big ol' country boy smile, patted him on the head and said, "why, hello there little fella!

How y'all doin' . ?"

Clearly, Bobby thought I was having lunch with a child.

I felt like I wanted to sink into the carpeting . . .but Dick took it in good spirits. Apparently it was not the first time it had happened.

He was first heard in such shows as “The Lone Ranger” and “The Green Hornet,” which were recorded at a Detroit radio station, and later on “Dragnet” and “Gunsmoke.”

After moving to Hollywood in 1952, Beals was asked to read for the part of Speedy Alka-Seltzer, a slightly goofy, animated sprite who wore an AlkaSeltzer tablet as a hat while another tablet formed his body.

With Beals reciting commercial lines and singing the fizzy tablet’s praises, the character was featured in more than 200 commercials that aired from 1954 to 1964. The ad campaign is considered “one of the classics of all time.”

Commercials became Beals’ main source of work, and his vocal talents were featured in more than 3,000 of them, The Times reported in 1992. He was an unseen pitchman for Oscar Mayer, Campbell’s Soup, Bob’s Big Boy and many others.

“I’m the voice of little babies to 15year-olds. In cartoons, I have also been the voice of all kinds of animals — parrots, chipmunks, birds, rabbits, you name it,” Beals said in 1992.

“Once directors found there was a college graduate who could do children’s voices, they didn’t have to call those nutty mothers anymore and ask them to get Junior to do the part,” Beals told the Lansing, Mich., State Journal in 2007.

“I could do any voice, boy or girl.”

The pastor became fodder for the cannons of satirical humourists when he defiantly defended his fleet of private luxury jets by declaring on national network television news: “Now some people believe that preachers shouldn’t have jets. I really believe that preachers ought to have them. I really believe that if Jesus was physically on the Earth today, he wouldn’t be riding a donkey. Think about that.”

International secular standup comedian, Ronnie Chieng, couldn’t resist using Duplantis’ statement for Christian satirical humour. “The donkey was a symbol of Jesus’ humility. It was the Toyota Camry of its time. All right?

And even if Jesus wouldn’t be riding a donkey, do you have to just jump from (donkey) straight to (private jet)? The gap between donkey and private jet is ALL OF TRANSPORATION! Okay? I bet Jesus would be fine taking an Uber. Or at least an UberXL, just so he has space to stretch his arms out.”

The pastor further justified his need for a fourth luxury jet aircraft by showing the TV viewers the framed photos on his wall of past jets and explaining: “This is the very first jet that I purchased for the Lord back in December 1994. Then, the second one here, I purchased in January 2004. The third one I’m flying now, it’s been with me 12 years.

“Now, people say, ‘My Lord, can’t you go with this one (the latest one)?’

“Yes, but I can’t go nonstop,” the pastor clarified.

The remark would cause a rebellious stir for millions of American television viewers who cringed at the pastor’s remarks and the telecast went viral over the global internet.

And the 36-year-old brilliant Malaysian-Chinese humourist, Ronnie Chieng, satirized the Man of God’s ‘sufferance of having to be unable to fly nonstop to save human souls.’

Satirist, Chieng, replied: “Okay, wait, so you think the message of God is really important – but only with no layovers? I need to save the people from Hell, as long as I don’t have to stop over in Cleveland!

Please God, no!”

In the view of many detractors such as Ronnie Chieng, their acerbic wit brings to life the biblical satirical proverbs against the sins of selfserving agendas which, ostensibly – and wrongfully – try to make God complicit in greed.

TELEVANGELIST KENNETH COPELAND OWNS 5 PRIVATE LUXURY JET PLANES. Pastor Duplantis is not alone with his 4th luxury jet dream. Believe it or not, he’s being outdone by others of his ilk.

Fellow evangelist and close friend, Kenneth Copeland, already owns five (5) luxury jet aircraft. His personal wealth is estimated at a massive $850million and closing in to possibly become history’s first modern-day billionaire pastor.

And, as with Duplantis, evangelist Copeland’s own congregations have paid for all of them.

Regarding his ministeries finally buying his 5th jet luxury plane, Copeland exalted on his own television show: “A brand new jet, debt free!”

He goes on record explaining the necessity of acquiring his latest jet: “I needed that jet!” he said loudly. “The one I had was too slow! I needed to go international and I needed to go fast!” he adds with satisfaction and exhilaration at escaping the ‘poverty’ of having jets that moved slower than the newer models.

Aside from wanting to streak through the heavenly skies faster, Copeland gives another reason for insisting on adding a 5th jet to his luxury fleet.

“YOU CAN’T TALK TO GOD WHILE FLYING COMMERCIAL!” Says fellow televangelist in media interviews: “You can’t talk to God while flying commercial.”

According to both Copeland and Duplantis, shown sitting together, the big problem for mega-rich preachers was that they faced constant interruptions from commercial passengers who often approached them asking for “unsolicited requests for prayer and help” when the pastors were trying to talk with God on public airliners -- as Copeland further expressed: “passengers agitating his spirit.”

This most recent luxury aircraft would be the preacher’s second one.

One parishioner, Mary Jones, who cannot afford a car and has to take the bus to church says she will be happy to give what little she has for Pastor Crefio’s second new jet. Says parishioner Mary Jones, cheerfully: “That’s what we’re here for, most definitely.”

However, ex-parishioners of Pastor Crefio say he promises his followers that God will bless them a hundredfold if they give. And they innocently are exploited beyond their means.

While others who have, also, since left the church simply claim: “He doesn’t need another jet airplane!”

And yet, many of the faithful who have paid for his past extravaganzas remain loyal to a fault.

As Pastor Copeland was quoted on one broadcast, sitting next to Pastor Duplantis, describing the experience of boarding a commercial airliner: “This dope-filled world . . . you get in a long tube with a bunch of demons and it’s deadly!”

PASTOR CREFIO IS ASKING 200,000 PEOPLE TO COMMIT TO $300 OR MORE FOR HIS SECOND JET. According to CNN News, Pastor Crefio’s official website is asking: “200,000 people to commit to ‘sowing’ $300 or more to help achieve our goal to purchase the G650 airplane” at the purchase price of $65-million.

ANOTHER TELEVANGELIST, MIKE MURDOCK, BRAGS ABOUT PAYING CASH FOR HIS CESSNA CITATION JETS. One video clip shows an enthused televangelist, Mike Murdock, bragging to his congregation about paying for two Cessna Citation jets with cash.

Pastor Murdock gushes with pride as he openly states to his parishioners: “And since there’s so much jealousy in this room tonight that I can feel over this, that a few weeks later I bought myself another one worth three times what that one was!”

Murdock is shown pausing in front of a congregation that has fallen dead silent at his jealousy remark and new purchases. Then he abruptly shouts and begins appealing loudly to the congregation: “Act happy over my blessings, folks!”

In the video, the congregation continues to sit in apparent stunned silence, ostensibly, as to what their pastor spent the collection plate donations from his vast ministry.

HISTORICAL JESUS HUMBLED HIMSELF BY LIVING AN IMPOVERISHED LIFE & ADMONISHED THE RICH. Although there is nothing wrong with being affluent, the Biblical Jesus repeatedly, and vehemently, warned that (most) rich people will lose their souls by eventually worshipping their almighty wealth -- over their Almighty God. The vagabond Jesus went so far as to reveal the seemingly incredulous during his Earthly ministry which was: that in any confrontation of great wealth vs. God, the wealthy mortal human will (almost always) choose their wealth in the final analysis.

Many concerned clergy members assert that if one is a professed Christian, then one must accept what is found in Biblical Scripture as the Christian Messiah vows in tragic satirical hyperbole: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:24) As taught in ancient writings, there is often little difference between tragedy and comedy, “As when the devil laughs and the angels weep.”

In historically recorded confrontations, the Christian Jesus challenged the rich to separate themselves from their wealth and follow Him.

Even though the rich had approached him first, and asked the Nazarene what else they must do to attain salvation, they all chose to freely back-off, and not divest themselves from their Earthly riches and ultimately refused to follow the religious Jesus, as they were asked.

Diversity

It's interesting in your current issue of The Paper (12/30/21) that both Escondido Mayor Paul "Mac" McNamara and columnist Paul Van Middlesworth (owner of The Computer Factory) both touched on a very critically-important topic in this explosive, often violently divisive world today. Both touched on the topic of human "diversity" and the need to be tolerant of opposing political and socio-viewpoints.

Mayor "Mac" spoke of diversity of opinions and the need for tolerance, "not everyone will agree with you on every issue . . . . But I always assumed they voted with goodwill.

Sometimes I think we lose that as a society when I look at social media comments." Mr. Van Middlesworth also speaks of needed tolerance despite diversity, "Diversity of thought and beliefs historically have been regarded as an American strength and the very life's breath of freedom. 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.'" Both give caution to how social media and/or the WOKE define "diversity" (race, opinions, etc.). What these two men are discussing is beyond just 'entertainment in reading.' These men bring up a dire requirement to tolerate diversity in opinion, race, etc., or face a questionable future.

This should be required reading.

Also, with this damned Omicron curse, we're spending more time at home, which means reading (over t.v.) is a welcomed component in our more and more sheltered lives.

The Paper is the best at entertaining/informing us. Your current headline story about GermanAmericans and the hidden facts behind their positive contributions in America was most impressive.

Modern bible scholars today attest that the Scriptural Jesus foresaw the hypocrisy of the super wealthy religious leaders paying only ‘lip service’ to their faith.

“The Parable of the Shrewd Manager” teaches us that God must be the most important thing in our lives.

As it is written “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Luke 16:13-31)

The parables bear witness that when the super rich approached the socalled Anointed One and inquired of Him what else was needed for them to achieve Eternal Life, they all withdrew from him when confronted with this very decision: Either worship God or worship your money.

BY THE QUESTIONABLE DEEDS OF THEIR DUBIOUS PEERS. Many honest, dedicated, and altruistic pastors, ministers, preachers, and various men of the cloth from different religions, have condemned the questionable behaviour of super rich pastors who live in “excessive wealth” as millionaires – multiple times over – and who live in multi-million dollar mansion/estates, with a fleet of ultra-luxury jet airplanes, complete with private airports, airplane runways and aircraft hangers, along with personal staggering bank accounts.

WHO ARE AMONG THE WORLD’S RICHEST PASTORS TODAY? Here is just a sampling of some of the world’s richest pastors today. This list is by no means complete as there are countless rich pastors worldwide today. Neither is this list a condemnation. It merely lists statistical facts and objective scenarios.

1. Pastor Kenneth Copeland (age 85) Copeland has openly stated on television: “I’m a very rich man.”

Copeland has even been quoted as stating his is a billionaire; however his bountiful wealth has not yet reached that summit. 2021 District Office Update

Helping people navigate the state’s massive bureaucracy is an important function of my District Office (DO). During 2021, we were able to help over 2,400 constituents resolve issues involving state and other governmental agencies.

This included over 2,000 unemployment claims, resulting from the Employment Development Department's inability to cope with the pandemic-related shutdown that struck in March, 2020.

Unfortunately, EDD is still reeling, causing delays and problems for thousands of Californians, but our office is here to help! This number doesn’t include hundreds of cases that have re-opened again and again, due to ongoing glitches in the government agency. Our office has also assisted EDD in identifying and stopping many fraudulent claims, including phony claims from people living in other states.

In addition to helping constituents get their EDD benefits, last year we handled hundreds of other cases involving the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Franchise Tax Board, licensing delays for nurses, long delays for firearm background checks, and many more.

Since government is so complex,

we frequently get inquiries about non-state issues. Over the past year we’ve received inquiries about the border, Afghan immigration, federal spending policies, people stuck overseas with expired passports, county land use policies, city zoning and many other topics! Back to Basics

I think we can all agree, I’m glad 2021 is in the rearview mirror. As we head into the new year, I don’t want to dwell on the past, I want to focus on the future, by getting back to basics.

While there’s been a lot of media attention surrounding three new members joining the Board of Supervisors, my focus doesn’t change. When I ran for election in 2018 my top three priorities were fiscal responsibility, public safety and making sure we had adequate behavioral health services. Those issues haven’t changed!

In 2020 and 2021, the County of San Diego dipped into its reserve for the first time in a very long time.

I’m glad we had these reserves for the COVID-19 crisis, but it’s important that we build it back up. We don’t know when the next pandemic, wildfire or catastrophe is around the corner. We must be prepared!

San Diego County is one of the safest counties in the country. That is because of the great work from our Sheriff and Police Departments.

We need to continue to provide adequate funding and resources in order to maintain safety throughout

our region.

When I came into office two years ago, North County was facing a behavioral health crisis with the suspension of Tri-City Hospital’s behavioral health unit and losses of other facilities and resources. Law enforcement was having to take people in crisis from North County all of the way to our facility at Rosecrans in San Diego. I’m pleased to announce, we are making significant progress! Soon, North County will have the resources to tackle homelessness in our region.

I think it’s vital as we say goodbye to a hectic 2021, we focus on setting our sight on 2022 and get back to basics!

Q: In October of 2019, I bought tickets for the Eagles at the Chase Center in San Francisco for an April 2020 concert. Obviously, that didn't happen. The concert was rescheduled for this spring and then rescheduled again for Oct. 22, 2021.

That seemed fine, but then we were hit by the delta variant. My daughter, who is to accompany me to the concert, is high-risk because of a number of chronic medical issues. She and I are both vaccinated, but our doctor has recommended that we remain vigilant and avoid higher-risk situations – like being close to several thousand people inside the Chase Center.

Yes, San Francisco requires all attendees to be vaccinated, but this is still too many people in too close quarters to be safe. Even vaccinated people are having breakthrough infections, and with her pre-existing conditions, this could be extremely dangerous.

When I requested a refund, I got a recorded message that it was past the allowable refund period. In normal times, this makes sense. Given this situation and COVID, it does not.

I've tried emailing and phoning Ticketmaster support on this issue, and I get a recorded message that says, "We're busy and can't help you." I waited several weeks after filling out a web form for a response, but all I got back was an automated form that didn't address my situation.

We love the Eagles, but it's not worth risking her health to see this concert.

Can you help me get a refund on these tickets? -- Linda Popky, Redwood City, Calif.

A: You should be able to get a refund, but not for the reasons you think. You purchased tickets for an April 2020 concert, which didn't happen.

Ticketmaster should have offered a choice between a full refund and a rescheduled show. It never met the obligations of your first ticket purchase.

I'm also an Eagles fan and would have gladly waited for the rescheduled show. But I'd never attend a concert if it put a loved one's health in peril.

Ticketmaster's COVID policy is clear: Every time one of your Eagles concerts flew to a new date, it would let you choose between a refund and tickets for the new show. It looks like you agreed to the new show dates the first time, but it isn't clear how you ended up with the second set of tickets for the Oct. 22 show. You say you don't recall receiving an offer for the second date.

If you can't safely attend a concert, you shouldn't have to forfeit your tickets. But the current Ticketmaster policy doesn't appear to have any provisions for customers' health, even though it should. Why doesn't it? I can't tell you why.

Q: I booked a visit to Legoland New York Theme Park & Resort based on an offer I received from the theme park for its October Brick-or-Treat hotel and park combo package.

I paid the quoted price, but they sent a follow-up email that I wasn't charged for park tickets, and I had two options: pay up or cancel.

Multiple calls to the company result in them holding the line — pay or go. You can't speak to anyone beyond the customer service representative. Escalation to management is only done internally.

Responses take seven to ten days.

But after two attempts, I've never gotten a reply.

I've also emailed the customer service address and haven't gotten any replies. I can't believe a familyfocused attraction new to our area would stonewall like this, especially when they made an error. I feel like they need to honor the price they quoted, but I'd love just to be able to talk it through with a representative with decision-making authority.

There are times in one’s life when unexpected pleasures come flooding in. I’ve had several of those occasions, one of them occurring back in 1979, while a cast member of the venerable stage play, The Philadelphia Story at the Patio Playhouse in Escondido.

I was cast as Uncle Willie, one of the supporting characters. The movie version was a favorite of mine. The 1940 Oscar-winning film featured Cary Grant, Katharyn Hepburn, James Stewart, and Ruth Hussey.

A: Oh, you are in a tight spot. Once you've told the kids, you pretty much have to go. As a father of three myself, I have experienced that many times. And to give you an idea of how serious it got, we had to move to Orlando to satisfy their theme park cravings. But I digress.

The offer you received from Legoland New York Theme Park & Resort should have included theme park tickets. When you pointed this error out to the company, it should have fixed it right away.

Instead, the company led you through a proverbial Lego maze of calls and emails.

That's too bad. I love Legoland.

I've visited the Legolands in Florida and California with my kids, and they love it, too. OK, some of the little rides aren't really for adults. But Legos speak to kids of all ages. When that happiness collapses like a poorly built tower of Legos, then no one is happy.

Maybe the most maddening part of your experience was dealing with Legoland's customer service agents. They offered neither a substantive response to your legitimate complaint nor a way to appeal your case. With the day of your arrival

Miss Hussey also was active in early television dramas such as “Marcus Welby, M.D,” “The Jimmy Stewart Theater,” “Jane Wyman Presents,” “Studio One,” “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “The New Perry Mason” show, and many others TV shows and commercials.

She also was active in Catholic charities, was noted for painting in watercolors, and was a lifelong Democrat although she did vote for Republican Thomas Dewey in 1944,, and for Hollywood friend and former co-star Ronald Reagan in the 1980 and 1984 presidential elections.

The additional pricing increases the $1,094 visit by another $600, or a 60 percent increase!

At age 23, he was the youngest producer in Hollywood to ever have won an Oscar.

Ruth Hussey

I don’t recall who, but one of my friends told me Miss Hussey lived in Carlsbad and had the popular actress’ phone number. She had played the photographer Elizabeth Inbrig character, for which she was nominated for an Oscar, It occurred to me it would be something of a coup having the popular star at one of our Escondido stage performances. I called her and she graciously accepted without hesitation – and, she asked if she could bring some of her Hollywood friends? I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough.

Ruth Carol Hussey, born Oct. 30, 1911, in Providence, R.I., worked as a model before landing a number of stage roles with touring companies. MGM signed her to a players’ contract and she made her film debut in 1937. She quickly became a leading lady in MGM's "B" film unit, usually playing sophisticated, worldly roles. In 1941, exhibitors voted her the third-most popular “new star” in Hollywood. But it was her Oscarnominated role as photographer Elizabeth Imbrie in “The Philadelphia Story” she is most remembered.

In 1942, she married talent agent and radio producer C. Robert "Bob" Longenecker at Mission San Antonio de Pala here in San Diego’s North County. They raised three children: George Robert Longenecker, John William Longenecker, and Mary Elizabeth Hendrix.

Following the birth of her children, Hussey focused much of her attention on family activities and in 1967 she was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.

In 1977, she and her husband moved

On the night she and her entourage arrived, I introduced the 18-year-old young lady playing the photographer’s role (unfortunately the years have robbed me of her name) to Miss Hussey after the show. While the youngster had never seen the Academy Award-winning movie, nor had any idea who the Oscar-nominated star was, Miss Hussey praised the young girl for her Patio performance.

Among the friends Miss Hussey brought that evening was her film producer-husband Bob Longnecker, Dick Simmons (Sgt Preston of the Yukon), and three other familiar character actors, whose names unfortunately I don’t recall… if I ever knew them. That particular trio of feature actors was easily recognizable, (a.k.a. “what’s their names”) after having seen all of them numerous times down through the years in supporting character roles of various films and TV shows. At that time they all lived in the Rancho Carlsbad community just off El Camino Real.

Hussey died April 19, 2005, at the age of 93, from complications from an appendectomy and was interred in Westlake Village, California.

During those years I had a number of other encounters with Miss Hussey, but I always was hung-up on her performance in “The Philadelphia Story.” The dumbest question I ever asked her during one of those star-struck moments: “Did you ever work with any other ‘big name’ actors?” That question still bounces around in my memory of dumb questions to a celebrity. There were nearly 20 other earlier films, including “Madam X, in a career that began in 1937 and lasted until 1973.

Her last big film was the 1952 classic “Stars & Stripes Forever” with Clifton Webb.

The American Baptist Evangelical Christian is actively involved advocating a 5point plan to bring global harmony to the world. He also is heavily committed to planting churches, helping the needy and sick, and promoting education. Pastor Warren and his wife consider themselves “reverse tithers.” They live on 10-percent of their income and donate the rest to charity. Says Warren: “I drive a 12year-old Ford, have lived in the same house for the last 22 years, bought my watch at Wal-Mart, and I don’t own a boat or a jet,” as quoted in a media interview with Forbes. Pastor Warren also hosted

the Civil Forum on the Presidency with interviews between U. S. presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama at his Saddleback Church. It was the first joint appearance of the two presidential candidates during the campaign. Pastor Rick Warren is well-respected and a pastor of high standing in the world today.

Mark Evanier, a tv writer, the writer for the Garfield cartoons, both the books and cartoons, and a voice director in LA remembers Dick Beals as a solid, reliable performer, always on time, always prepared, if his recording appointment was for 4pm, Dick would be there at 3:30 and would patiently wait until called. Always well groomed and always polite, he was easy to work with.

Seeking a small-town existence, Beals moved in 1970 from the Los Angeles area to Escondido, where he opened an ad agency, coached Little League and served as a high school sports announcer.

A private pilot, he often commuted to Los Angeles for work in his own plane.

He also owned and sailed his own 23 foot schooner, often sailing to Catalina Island. Both his car and aircraft were fitted with special extenders allowing his feet to control both aircraft and auto rudders or brakes, accelerators.

Later in life, he was a motivational speaker who turned to his 1992 autobiography to inspire audiences. He called his book “Think Big.” We lost Dick in 2012 when he passed away at Vista Memory Gardens, in Vista, Ca., at the age of 85.

Neil Hamilton, who played Commissioner Gordon on "Batman," has also passed on.

Bobby Green, at age 86, is still with us but is in poor health and now lives in Ohio.

I talk with Bobby fairly often and we both chuckle at the memorable comment of . . . "why, hello there little fella!

There is something awesome about a new year, at least in its recognition. I suppose, in some ways, it is just another day. We do put up a new calendar and then just move on. A more significant day would be January 21st, the winter solstice.

While it is the shortest day of the year, it is also the day leading to the longest day of the year. Past generations, even going back to ancient periods, did mark their lives with this magical period, leading up to our modern times with festivals, great celebrations, and even revelry.

•••• Just watched the "60 Minutes" program on the monastery on Mt. Athos in Greece. I told her I was gonna be a monk, that I'd be leaving soon, that I couldn't take her (no women allowed on the island) or Trixie, that she wouldn't even be able to call me by phone, or write me a letter and that she'd never see me again.

She said, "Sorry to see you go, here's your hat."

Christmas morning and my gift giving is finally done.

I gave everyone batteries, toys and electronics not included.

I'm sure they'll be thrilled.

Recently, I was interviewed on KUSI and they asked me what was in store for Escondido in 2022. Well, you only have about 5 minutes in these interviews and so one has to narrow what one wants to say. Here are the three topics I spoke about:

Economic Development Initiatives that have been slowed by COVID and have remained behind the scenes are still progressing and moving forward.

Expect 2022 to be the year they come out in the light Examples -Grand Avenue Redevelopment, New businesses and City efficiencies, Electrify America is installing its second group of electric vehicle charging stations and numerous others Homelessness Led 3 year effort to really identify the problem and solution as well as stakeholders.

Finally turning the corner.

Building partnerships among the North :County cities, the county and the private sector. Eliminating silo’d or stove pipe only efforts.

We now have a good coalition.

Quality of Life Community projects continuing - Esco Creek Trail, Fitness Courts, Aquatics Center, Senior Centers, Skate Park etc.

Children’s Youth Orchestra starting in January.

Outreach feedback has been very positive I remain very optimistic about our future!

“What’s happening to us?”

My home town was Centerville Indiana, and the “Bulldogs” were our basketball team. In four years of high school I groaned at every foul called against our players and celebrated each foul called on our opponents.

Admittedly, we “Bulldog” rooters did not objectively evaluate the fairness of each and every referee judgment.. We had a much simpler criteria. If it benefitted our “Bulldogs”, the call represented truth and justice at the highest level. Any infraction called against our team was a travesty straight from the depths of hell and deserving of the inevitable chorus of boos and hisses from our side of the gym. No amount of reason or persuasive logic could move us from the rock solid knowledge that

In the ensuing years we’ve been involved in other “tribes” offering blind allegiance to sports teams, service clubs and even politicians.

We’ve seen organizations like the WWF create artificial good guy/bad guy images that inspire a love/hate emotional responses in their mass media fans. But we have never seen anything like the massive emotion based schism created along political lines that has divided America into two warring camps.

Like other “tribal” loyalties, this divide is largely non-logical, emotion based and impervious to reason.

The Republican Party (conservatives) has changed little in their beliefs and strategies over the past 150 years but the Democrats have evolved dramatically and completely changed the nature of National politics. How did that happen?

For nearly a hundred years after the end of Reconstruction in 1879, the conservative leaders of the solidly white and Democrat South provided much of the leadership of the national Democrat party. As civil rights legislation became law in the mid 20th century, the Dixiecrats (Segregationists southern Democrats) began to lose influence in the Democrat party and the political power shifted to growing urban centers.

With the majority of Americans thinking about politics these days, political memorabilia is drawing quite a bit of attention. Throughout the years the most popular patriotic object to collectors has been items depicting the Statue of Liberty.

That is true. Political candidates may come and go, but not the Statue of Liberty. Even political parties come and go (just ask history buffs about the Federalist and Whig parties, just to name a couple). But not the Statue.

Needless to say, of all the national emblems, Lady Liberty symbolizes the spirit and body of the United States. Sure, there are flags seen everywhere, but there is only one Lady Liberty. It was the first beacon of the United States for immigrants. Hope eternal. A new life.

Freedom. And to collectors, a plethora of possibilities.

The Statue has become a symbol of America’s dedication to democracy during the World Wars, and to the present conflicts. She has appeared on patriotic objects such as posters.

Since its surfacing in 1876 (thanks to the French), and since the inscription was added by Emma Lazarus in 1883 (“Give me your tired, your poor…..”), there have been millions and millions of statues manufactured and imaged. But

the demand is endless. The most cherished of all Statue collectibles are those from 1876, as well as from 1886, the year of the formal dedication, and 1986, the centennial year of the dedication.

One of the most highly desirable collectibles is a copy of the original, 1886, four-page souvenir program of the dedication ceremony.

Magazines and newspapers of that time describing the ceremony are also valued.

Through the years a sampling of the types of Statue of Liberty objects include: pins, buttons, medals, candy containers, glassware, music boxes, models, banks, paperweights, cookie cutters, playing cards, sheet music, jars, bowls, mens’ ties, books, and of course mini-statuettes.

But the popularity has spread. In the late 1800’s trade cards showed images of Lady Liberty, especially of passing ocean liners.

Donations of Gently Used Bikes for Kids in Need - In partnership with the San Diego chapter of Free Bikes 4 Kidz, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is hosting a donation drive to gift gently used bikes to children across the region.

The chapter aims to collect more than 1,000 bikes.

Donations of gently used bikes will be accepted at these San Diego County Trek Bicycle store locations on Saturday, January 8th, from 10am to 3pm. Once ready, the bicycles will be donated to youth from across San Diego with the help of partner organizations including Outdoor Outreach and the Kiwanis Club of Southeastern San Diego. If you have bike donations that would be appropriate, please deliver them to one of the sites shown that are accepting them between 10am and 3pm on Saturday, January 8th.

“Every child, every smile is a story.

We all remember our first bike, but millions of kids will never have that memory. We are trying to change that,” said Terry Esau, founder of Free Bikes 4 Kidz. “I have seen thousands of smiles on kids, and rivers of tears in their parents’ eyes when a kid picks out their own, very first bike. I never tire of that story. It only costs us $25 to put a deserving child on a bike and give them a new helmet. That is like 4 Starbucks coffees.” Free Bikes 4 Kidz, a national organization, has given away more than 100,000 bicycles since its launch in 2008.

PREVAILING WAGE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, pursuant to the San Marcos City Charter and the San Marcos Municipal Code, payment of prevailing wages and compliance with the California Labor Code Sections 1770 et seq is required for this project. The Contractor will be required to comply with all of the terms and conditions (including State General Prevailing Wage requirements) prescribed for Contractor performing public works construction projects.

The California Department of Industrial Relations determines the general prevailing wage rates for the State and are available at the DIR website, http://www.dir.ca.gov, or from the City of San Marcos’ City Clerk Office.
