"You never close your eyes…"

How many times has Bill Medly sung that six-note opening line from You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ . . .in the almost 60 year career of being a singer, songwriter and actor? Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, the original Righteous Brothers, began their career in 1962 when they were simply singing at local night clubs and hoping to put The Paper - 760.747.7119

together a group that would make pop musical history.

Originally, they would have been content to play Las Vegas Lounges.

They met that goal and then exceeded it . . . by a great deal. Bill Medley: William Thomas Medley, whose heritage is 1/2 English, 1/2 Dutch, was born on September 19, 1940, in Los Angeles, he grew up and went to school in nearby Santa Ana. For as long as he can remember his objec-

tive in life has been music. He sang in Presbyterian choirs and high school glee clubs and entered amateur contests. Bills influence came from his father who led a band and played sax and his mother played piano and sang. (His father was with the sheriff’s department for many years before retiring). "When we were both 13 we didn't know each other,'' Medley says, "but our musical college was the same. Rock 'n' Roll caught us right at puberty. First time I heard Little Richard, my life changed. I would

buy all these records by Fats Domino, B.B. King, Bobby Bland and Ray Charles and listen to them all day long. When it came time for me to sing onstage, I was trying to be like them.....''

"...now the minute we hit the stage it feels like we're 26 again..... and we hope the audience feels the same way" Bill Medly and Bobby Hatfield sang together for the first time in 1962 at a small club in Orange County.Their voices blended so

beautifully that they soon began a 5 piece group, The Paramours. Their distinctive sound soon earned them the name of The Blue Eyed Soul Brothers. Indeed, for many years listeners thought that they were a black singing group so close was their music to black soul music.

Bobby Hatfield: In one of our first bookings we were sent to an all black club in Central L.A. He booked us in this place called Club California and it was flat right in the middle of Watts and I believe he booked us because of "Little Latin Lupe Lu". I'm sure he had no idea that we were white. We walked in the front door and he was sittin’ at the bar and he realized immediately that these guys have to either be The Righteous Brothers or crazy. So he asked us to step to the bar and have as many cocktails as possible. I'm pretty sure he was hopin we would over do it and pass out. And he could go on stage and say "Hey guess what, The Righteous Brothers couldn't make it tonight...sorry bout that" But we did make it through and we ended goin up there and just rippin the house down. It wasn’t long before their records were played on radio . . . they landed regular spots on ABC’s (Shindig) tv program . . . and then began concert tours serving as opening acts for artists such as The Beatles and the The Rolling Stones.

They had come a long way, this duo. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield had no idea when they first met in Orange County, California, that their partnership would give them a lifetime of relevance. At the time, to expect their work would somehow be enshrined in a Hall of Fame would have been ludicrous.

A young Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield Bobby Hatfield: Well we got our name working in a little club in Orange County, California. We were doin a lot of rhythm and blues at the time. And the longer we worked together (we had a five piece band at the time) we started doing more and more duets. On this one particular evening there were several black Marines in there and when Bill and I finished doing a duet, one of them yelled out "That's righteous brothers". Later on after we dropped the name The Paramours, we started thinking about a name and I don't know which one of us it was but one of us said "how about The Righteous Brothers'?.... And there it is. I'm so classy, my mind's eye wears a monocle.

On Bud's Gun Shop Forums the question came up: What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?

My personal favorite defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in .22 short. Over all the years I've been hiking I never leave without it in my pocket. Of course we all know too the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System". For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this it means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a friend or companion, even an in-law, that way if something happens there is someone to go get help. I remember one time hiking with my brother-in-law on Raspberry Island near Kodiak . Out of nowhere came this huge brown bear and man was she mad. We must have been near one of her cubs.

Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire I'd sure not be here today. Just one shot to my brother-in-law's knee cap and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace. That's one of the best pistols in my safe.

You know you're an aging radio DJ when:

They remembered the occasion and eventually renamed their group The Righteous Brothers for their first album. The Early Years: Bobby Hatfield Remembers: Bobby: Oh we were making, quite a bit of money ...I think we split fifty dollars. With me and Bill ...I think we started out with fifteen apiece and split the other twenty between the band. The Righteous Brothers gave the soul music a new sophistication. With Medley's rich, seductive bass and Hatfield's urgent, gospelinflected tenor creating a unique harmonic blend, they sang with such depth of soul that listeners assumed they were AfricanAmerican.

Phil Spector signed the group to his Philles label in 1964 and wrote ''Lovin' Feelin' '' for them with his songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. That hit was recorded with Mr. Spector's trademark ''wall of sound'' technique, with an abundance of instruments, including four acoustic guitars, three basses and three pianos. Mr. Medley sang the verses in a sonorous baritone and Mr. Hatfield joined in on the choruses with soaring harmonies. Combined with the density of Phil Spector's "wall of sound" production, the duo defied traditional music labels, gaining play on both pop and R&B stations. ''Lovin' Feelin' '' was a No. 1 hit in 1965. When a Philadelphia air personality You were first hired by a GM who actually worked in radio before becoming GM.

You used to smoke in a radio station and nobody cared.

Engineers always had the worst body odor, not because they worked too hard, but because they just didn't shower that often. You can name at least 2 receptionists that you nailed who now have

tabbed their music "blue-eyed soul," The Righteous Brothers built a tradition that still exists in pop music today. And no less than Elvis Presley himself, a close friend of Bill Medley, demonstrated respect for the duo by frequently singing You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' and Unchained Melody during his 1970s performances.

It was only after the Phil Spector recording session where they cut “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ that their fortunes began to climb. "We had no idea if it would be a hit," Medley recalls. "It was too slow, too long, and right in the middle of The Beatles and the British Invasion." The performing rights organization BMI has recorded some 20 million plays of their signature song, making it the mostprogrammed title in the history of American radio. Bill Medley, the producer: Bill Medley: I produced before Phil Spector (and his “Wall of Sound”... Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was gonna do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced "Unchained Melody," which Phil Spector apparently takes credit for. He can have the credit. I know how

Religious radio stations were locally owned, run by an old Protestant minister and his wife, never had more than 20 listeners at any given time, and still made money. You have a white wax pencil, a razor blade, and a spool of 3M splicing tape in your desk drawer just in case.

You know people who actually listened to baseball games on the radio. You can post a record, run down the hall, go to the bathroom, and be back in 2:50 for the segue.

"Unchained Melody" was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single "Hung On You" and the minute it was released "Unchained Melody" just went through the roof.

“It’s really a shame, how Phil Spector’s life has imploded. He was an absolute genius in music. No question of it. I understand today that he is not in the best of health. Medley has not made contact with Spector, who is in prison for murder charges.

Dealing with Fame, Success, and Money: Bill Medley: There's no way you can prepare. We were two young Orange County guys from middle class homes. Our parents worked very hard and ... I don't know about Bobby but I didn't have girls knockin down my door to go out with me. I mean I dated and I did ok but .. than you have a hit record and now girls are approaching you . . . and now you've got money. And that's odd. That's a real art trying to deal with money. I think Bobby and I did real well in all of it and the reason is we pretty much stayed home in Orange County. I mean we lived in Hollywood for a few years but we

Editor’s Note: (Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield did quite well at handling money. As of 1996 Medley’s net worth was estimated at $65 million, Bobby Hatfield, at the time of his passing, was $45 million. In 2015, Bill Medley sold his home on Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach for $6 million.)

The Righteous Brothers recorded several more hits with Mr. Spector, including ''Unchained Melody,'' ''Ebb Tide'' and ''Just Once in My Life,'' before signing a million-dollar contract with Verve Records. At Verve the group recorded another Mann-Weil song, ''(You're My) Soul and Inspiration,'' with Mr. Medley as producer fastidiously recreating Mr. Spector's wall of sound. It became a No. 1 hit in 1966. In the mid-60's the group was also a regular act on the weekly television show ''Shindig!'' The group broke up in 1968 and for a short time Mr. Hatfield retained the name the Righteous Brothers on tour, with Jimmy Walker filling in for Mr. Medley. “There was nothing personal in the breakup. Bobby had some things he wanted to do, I had some things I wanted to do. It just seemed the right time to take a break.” Mr. Hatfield and Mr. Medley reunited in 1974 and had a No. 3 hit

with ''Rock and Roll Heaven,'' a tribute to dead rock stars. Mr. Medley retired in 1976, but the two reunited again in 1983. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Billy Joel in March 2003.

Tragedy Hits The Righteous Brothers: In January 1976, Bill Medley’s first wife, Karen, was raped and murdered by a stranger, and Medley decided to take time off from his music career to look after his 10-year-old son Darrin (Today, Darrin is 53 years old. At one time he was the lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders. Today, he owns a successful cable installationl company in Temecula, CA.”)

The murder had not been solved and Medley employed a private investigator in an effort to track down the killer.

On January 27, 2017, the Los Sheriff's County Angeles Department announced that investigators used a controversial DNA testing method to solve the decades-old murder. The sheriff's department said that the case "was solved through the use of familial DNA, which identified the killer," who was named as Kenneth Troyer, a sex offender and fugitive killed by police in 1982. Medley married his current wife Paula, in 1986 and they have a daughter, McKenna, now 33 years old. Their daughter is also a singer

Bobby Hatfield: Bobby Hatfield was born Robert Lee Hatfield in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin on August 10, 1940. His family moved to Anaheim, California when he was four years old. His introduction into show business was singing, "Shortnin Bread" on a local radio show as a 3rd grader. He was the student body president of his high school, sang in the choirs, and says he will never forget his first solo appearance.

"I was M.C. for our talent show. Two days prior to the show, for some ungodly reason, I decided to sing. I was never so scared in my life and also never so thankful that I had dark pants on! I sang Johnny Mathis' "Chances Are", and even though I thought the sound of my knees banging together was drowning out my voice, I managed to pull it off." On November 5th, 2003, legendary pop-duo The Righteous Brothers were scheduled to perform a concert in Kalamazoo at Miller Auditorium. Singer Bobby Hatfield, opposite Bill Medley in the duo, never made it to the show. According to a 2003 article from Billboard magazine, Hatfield was found dead in his room at the

So Sorry to Hear about Friedrich Gomez’s Loss Letters to the Editor Column.

"Geez, Louise! Where's your cover story writer Friedrich Gomez already?!"

That's been the widespread question not only with my wife and myself and others, but also with my young daughter and all her college friends at Cal State University San Marcos.

Then, I just picked up the latest edition of The Paper and there it was! The answer to all the emails that were beginning to pour in. On page 11 of The Paper's "Letters to the Editor," (Jan. 30 issue) in answer to all the fan mail asking about Mr.

McNamara had rethought his position, his remarks, and his attitude and publicly apologized to Councilmember Morasco.

“I want to publicly apologize to Councilmember Morasco,” McNamara said near the beginning of last week’s council meeting.

“I was a bit short with him and I was thinking about something else that got me angry and sometimes you take it out on somebody else. Mike and I are good friends and I think he does a great job here on the council. “I’m publicly embarrassed that I was short with him because he didn’t deserve that and it wasn’t civil,” McNamara continued. “So Mike, I hope you can accept my apology.”

Morasco responded :"Absolutely. Thank you mayor. I appreciate that.”

When’s the last time you heard a Mayor apologize for his actions? Sure didn’t happen during Sam Abed’s time as mayor. I thought Mayor McNamara’s apology was a class act. A much needed return to civility within the public arena.

The initial autopsy performed by the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner's office listed the cause of death as a heart attack. Further autopsy results later determined that a contributing factor to the singer's death was cocaine intoxication, which was announced in January of 2004. Bill Medley: “No, I was not aware of Bobby’s use of cocaine. He never once showed up for a concert high, was always on time, always Mr. Dependable. I don’t think he was in the best of health. He seemed to be weak. I suspect he may have decided to self medicate and chose cocaine as his medicine of choice.” Those who were planning to watch the show in Kalamazoo didn't know why the concert was canceled at first. CBS News reported that night that an announcement was made to the gathered crowd at Miller Auditorium shortly before the show that the concert was canceled. They said it was because of "a personal emergency of an unspecified nature." As the night went on, there was a growing buzz around Kalamazoo as reports came in on local and national media outlets that Bobby Hatfield had died suddenly of unknown causes.

With all the public turmoil and downright nasty exchanges at a number of political levels, most notably at the national level, Mayor McNamara’s apology is a much needed act of civility and, we hope, will spread throughout the political arenas of the world. Wouldn’t it be nice if opposing sides learned once again how to be civil with one another, even when in disagreement? Proud of you Mayor McNamara, and of Councilmember Mike Morasco for so graciously accepting the Mayor’s apology. I’m quite pleased with Mayor McNamara and his leadership of the Escondido city council. I’m also very pleased with Assembly Member Marie Waldron and her leadership within the Assembly. She’s addressed a number of issues that I think accurately reflects the public pulse.

Speaking of things political, the primary election is not far off. Sometime in the next several weeks The Paper will be listing its endorsements and our reason for making them . . . or not. Our endorsements or lack thereof may surprise some of you. Others, maybe not so much. We shall see what happens.

He also has two sons by his first marriage, Bobby Jr. and Kalen and a grandson, Luke.

Bobby Hatfield, whose wholesomely passionate tenor carried the upper harmonies of the pop-soul duo the Righteous Brothers was gone. He was 63 and lived in Newport Beach, Calif.

In a telephone interview with Medley last week we pointed out that all of the truly great musical singers and songwriters had this great ability to transform thoughts, feelings, and emotions into lyrics. All the great ones have it, Willie Nelson, Paul McCartney . . Kris Kristofferson . . and a fella named . . . Bill Medley. We asked him, “How is this talent acquired. Can it be learned?

“I really don’t think so,” he said. “I think it’s in your DNA. Then, if it’s there you have to have the courage to let it all hang out; you have to

You have to take it and work with it and write or sing, or both, of what you are feeling. I think all of the artists you named probably have exactly the same feeling.” In January, 2016, Bill Medley (75) announced he intended to revive the Righteous Brothers for the first time since 2003. His new singing partner was Bucky Heard.

Weldon Howard Heard was born in Dadeville on July 14, 1965.

Growing up in a house of devout Elvis and Chuck Berry fans meant hanging in the background, listening to the rock ‘n’ roll soundtracks of his parents’ parties. In 1974, Heard bought the Righteous Brothers’ 45-rpm single, “Rock and Roll Heaven.”

“That’s probably my favorite Righteous Brothers song,” Heard says. “I played that 45 over and over and over again, trying to sing just like Bobby Hatfield. I literally wore that record out.” Through some divine clerical error he met James Ingle, a Branson, Mo.-based music director, after Ingle’s luggage had been lost the night of a black-tie event—Heard

They said,"We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna do."

supplied him with a tuxedo. The two became fast friends, and for years Ingle tried to lure Heard to Branson. Heard always refused— until job prospects threatened to separate him from his wife. On a whim, they drove from Dadeville to Branson for a weekend. He wound up staying in Branson for 13 years.

Heard, 52, has been singing for years in Branson, Mo., where Medley started gigging after Hatfield's death. One night Medley heard him cover a couple of Journey songs and realized his voice was a high tenor that fit Hatfield's parts. "He just killed it," Medley recalled. "The next night I heard him do some John Fogerty and Creedence songs. And I said, 'Well, he's a rock 'n' roll singer.' "

An Alabama native, Heard studied acting at Auburn University, worked in musical theater and also sang in rock bands. For years, he was featured in a "Legends" show as one of the Blues Brothers. "He was doing John Belushi and that's why it was so surprising to me when I saw him do Journey," Medley said. The two got together at a piano and discovered their voices worked together. For Bill Medley, the chance to resurrect the Righteous Brothers after the death of longtime singing partner Bobby Hatfield came out of the blue when he went to see Bucky perform.

When one half of your famous duo passes away, it can be challenging to forge ahead even when your heart yearns for the type of music you’ve been living your entire life.

And then, sometimes, a chance comes along that allows you to revisit your favorites with the same sort of loving feeling. Heard hits all the same high notes as Hatfield, complementing Medley’s bass baritone to reinvigorate the blue-eyed soul sound perfected by The Righteous Brothers in the 1960s and 1970s. Songs like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” “Soul and Inspiration,” “Rock and Roll Heaven,” “Ebb Tide” and “Unchained Melody” draw on that balance of notes for a smooth, heartfelt effect. “It’s important that Bucky sounds like the old rhythm and blues of the Righteous Brothers because the audiences are there to hear those old songs and we want them to sound as much like the records as possible, to be what they remember from their youth,” Medley says.

But now, emerging beside Bill Medley in the spotlight at the front of the stage, is someone else:

So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts, and off they went.

Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of San Diego when suddenly he was horrified! There was the blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. What the hell are you doing here?" he demanded, "I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo."

"Yes, I know you did," said the blonde," but we had money left over so now we're going to Sea World." Old is "Old".....Not Stupid!

AB 5 isn’t working

This week I joined my colleagues to address a large crowd gathered on the Capitol steps to protest Assembly Bill 5, one of the most devastating pieces of legislation in California’s recent history. This illconceived attempt to deal with the problem of employee misclassification has jeopardized the livelihood and security of thousands. My office has received hundreds of phone calls, emails and letters opposing AB 5 from a broad cross section of workers, including Uber and Lyft drivers, newspaper publishers, freelancers, interpreters, artists, musicians, and even local community groups like Fallbrook Arts, Inc. Small businesses, like mine, now cannot contract out for services and bring in workers as job needs require. People needing flexible work schedules such as working moms, families with special needs children, those caring for elderly parents and many more have seen their incomes, their way of life, their families’ very security upended and threatened by AB 5.

Despite a massive outpouring of criticism, AB 5 was pushed through last year with little consideration about its economic impact. Many exemptions, mostly for powerful

and well-connected interest groups were included in the bill, but they are complicated, vague and often unusable. Governor Newsom has indicated some interest to making changes. My legislative colleagues and I are eager to help, and we are already introducing legislation, including the complete repeal of AB 5. Abuses of contract employees should be addressed, and laws to prevent misclassification of workers must be vigorously enforced. However, AB 5 limits freedom by preventing people from finding work schedules that fit their lives. It attempts to rig our economy with a one-size-fits-all solution that is unworkable in a state with 40 million people. We need a system of labor laws that work for all, not just the select, well-connected few. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Homelessness in California is at extremely high levels and San Diego, while better than San Francisco and Los Angeles, has a steadily rising homeless population. Last week, I partnered with Supervisor Jacob on addressing the homeless population in San Diego’s unincorporated area.

In our Board Letter, I’ve asked County staff to take a look at existing buildings, which could be used for transitional housing. Also, the County will be adding four additional deputies to the HART program.

The value of human life must always be a foremost concern when developing sound public policy. Additionally, there is also a value to the quality of life that residents and business owners face daily interacting with homelessness. Right now, unintended consequences from ballot measures and policies at the state level have tied law enforcements hands. The citizens of San Diego County demand that we maintain order and sanitary conditions in our public spaces. They are compassionate, but they have every right to demand that their streets and neighborhoods not become unsanitary tent cities for the homeless. None of us would welcome that near our homes, and we should not allow it near others.

While homelessness is a major issue, we need to make sure we are using taxpayer dollars effectively. Taxpayers demand accountability. Compassion alone is not helpful. Programs must be effective and accountable.

younger, looser, a definite contrast to the staid, elegant Medley. His hair is long; his voice is powerful; he’s definitely not Bobby Hatfield. The Righteous Brothers show opens with some standards, then, during a brief interlude, Heard formally introduces himself.

“I say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is a wonderful opportunity for me. I am a huge Righteous Brothers fan just like you; even more so, I’m a huge Bobby Hatfield fan, and I’m honored and privileged to keep this music alive.’ ” Heard then sings Roy Orbison’s “Cryin,’ ” giving it his own twist. From that moment on, the crowd accepts him.

Medley also sings "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," his Grammywinning smash from the movie "Dirty Dancing," with his daughter, McKenna, taking the part of Jennifer Warnes, his duet partner on the 1987 hit.

Bill Medley is a prolific writer both of songs, melody and lyrics. Does he have any ambitions to write more songs?

“I CALL MY PIANO ’THE SHRINK. I still write a little bit, but having some pretty big success and being out on the road all the time, it really eats up your artistic energy to write. But I still write a little bit, not to write hit songs, I just write to write.”

As for Bucky Heard, he has no intention of ever leaving The Righteous Brothers.

“I told Bill, ‘They’re going to have to drag me off the stage one day.’ That’s a fact.” An admitted old-school musician who struggles to understand social media, Medley says his songs will always be steeped in the R&B he was raised on.

“I do love country — the old stuff. I like simple, soulful stuff,” he says. “I also love the 1970s singer songwriters like Elton John and Jackson Browne. And I’d give anything to be part of the Eagles!”

“Music has to touch people’s hearts to resonate,” he continues. Righteous Brothers singles have historically done just that and it’s the sort of feeling he’s looking for in potential pieces for the duo’s new configuration. “The best shot is a song you love, a song that touches you, a song that you just want to do,” he says.

"Going on stage and singing our hits has never been our focus," says Bill. "Our focus has been on performing - that is what has helped us

Major Photo Exhibit Reveals San Quentin in Valley Center - For years, San Quentin operated a minimum-security prison in Valley Center, a fact not widely known to most residents. A major exhibition, with multiple photos and documentation, shows for the first time the scope of the local lock-up and why felons were moved from the main prison in northern California to San Diego County. The exhibit opens Friday, February 7, at the Valley Center History Museum and will continue to the end of the year. The display includes a number of official photos plus aerial photos from the collection of the Valley Center Historical Society. Others were donated by an Escondido resident whose father was a civilian employee at the site, and from the Historic Route 395 Assn. Many have never before been made public. Known officially as Moosa Prison Labor Camp #38, the facility was constructed in 1940 and attracted little attention from a Valley Center population that numbered less than 2,000. The following year, some 70 convicts were moved from the main San Quentin complex to Valley Center. The 125-acre parcel had been leased from a local family by the State Dept. of Corrections. The amazing but little-known story of the prison also involves the nation's national defense and construction of a major roadway during World War II. Prisoners were assigned to a work detail building a new road that would link San Diego naval yards to March Air Field to the

Aaron Burr: The Nearly Forgotten Man

If you were asked who President Thomas Jefferson’s vice president was, no doubt many would run to a search engine for the answer -- few would know it was Aaron Burr.

He’s the guy who shot the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. But, other than that fact, few history books go into much detail about the man until you get into college-level history books. Who was he? Hamilton prominently takes his place in history as founder of what today is the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Mint, and to keep him before the public eye, Hamilton has his picture on the $10 bill and is the star on the Broadway musical. Conversely, Burr’s bio is hard to find in most history tomes. It all goes back to the Burr-Hamilton duel of 1807.

During the Battle for Quebec, Burr served as a colonel under Gen. Benedict Arnold -- a name that’s remembered as a traitor, not as a soldier. In that futile attempt to take Canada away from the British, Colonel Burr distinguished himself earning a place on Gen. George Washington’s command staff. But, after two weeks, Burr was disillusioned and asked for a transfer back with the troops.

During the Battle of New York Burr saved an entire brigade from capture which, ironically, included Colonel Alexander Hamilton. In spite of distinguishing himself during that battle, Washington was still miffed at Burr because he had rebuffed the command staff. Washington ignored Burr’s heroic actions at New York, a snub that led to an estrangement between the two men which never was completely mended.

But Burr continued to advance in rank. In 1777, he was promoted and assumed command of a regiment and during the harsh winter at Valley Forge, Burr led a small unit guarding an isolated pass, driving back an attempted mutiny by Colonial troops who were trying to escape the bitter cold. In 1779, Burr had to leave the Army due to bad health, but he remained

active in the War. Somewhat forgiven, he was assigned by Washington to perform occasional intelligence missions. During one of those missions, Burr rallied a group of Yale students in New Haven, Conn., to aid a small unit of Colonial soldiers in a skirmish with the British. This action repelled the British advance, forcing the red coats to retreat. After the war, in 1782, Burr was admitted to the New York bar. Then entering politics, he was twice-elected to the New York state Assembly and later appointed New York Attorney General. In 1786, Burr was selected to be a U.S. senator.

In those days, the office of President was elected by the Senate. In 1800, Burr was pitted against Thomas Jefferson, but he lost the presidency by one vote. Second-place finishers were relegated to the office of Vice President. Because of a series of scurrilous, behind-the-scenes maneuvering by Hamilton, after thirty-some ballots, Jefferson won the presidency. Burr discovered what happened and blamed Hamilton for his not becoming president. Hamilton, a vindictive man, “disliked” Jefferson, but he “hated” Burr. An early example of “… the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” In banking the two men were highly successful. Burr founded the Bank of Manhattan, which today is JP MorganChase. Hamilton founded the rival Bank of New York, making the two men powerful, but bitter political and business competitors.

What exactly happened that triggered the long-time riff between the two men has been much conjecture and lost to the ages. However, it’s the duel that has relegated Burr to near-obscurity. One of the reasons for the duel could have been Hamilton’s vicious and mostly untrue rumors cleverly placed with newspaper columnists, business and social leaders. As Vice President, Burr was widowed and lived with his daughter and husband. Hamilton reportedly “suggested” to newspaper columnists that Burr was so wicked he committed incest with his daughter. Enraged, Burr challenged the Treasury Secretary to a duel across the river in Weehawken, N.J., where such activity was legal. Reportedly, Hamilton had planned to only fire his pistol, aiming above Burr’s head. The vice president had no such intention. Hamilton was mortally wounded by Burr’s deadly aim, dying a day later. Hamilton’s death destroyed Burr’s political and business reputation. Years later, Burr traveled West to embark upon what was an “alleged” attempt to form a new country and was charged with treason by the Federal government. Burr eventually was acquitted. Burr spent the remainder of his life in obscurity, practicing law in New York. He died at age 80, on Sept. 14, 1836, as a result of a debilitating stroke. Burr was buried near his father in Princeton, New Jersey.

Aaron Burr was a most-interesting character who has been nearly lost between the pages of America’s early founding and Revolutionary War history.

"You can't fake having fun, and we're having more fun than ever. If we weren't we'd be long gone. We know how blessed we are to actually get paid for having a great time!"

Recently, in a phone interview with me, the 78-year-old Medley talked about his extensive career and the decision to reform The Righteous Brothers with Bucky Heard, 13 years after the death of his original singing partner Bobby Hatfield.

“I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD REFORM THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS. It was a real hard and strange choice, and I didn’t necessarily want to, but I was getting so much fan mail of people saying, ‘You need to keep the music alive,’ my agents, a n umber of venues, all kept arguing that we should bring back the Righeous Brothers. At the same time, Harrah’s Casino had called me that wanted me to do a Las Vegas residency. At the same time, I knew, deep inside, that I needed to do it to keep myself artistically busy. (The Righteous Brothers perform at Harrah’s, in Las Vegas, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). I was in Branson, Missouri, at the urging of the late Dick Clark, and I

went to see my friend Bucky Heard in a new show doing some Journey songs. He just killed me. I thought, ‘Wow, man. If I was gonna do this, this would be the guy.’ Mainly because we had been friends for years and he’s such great, great guy and great singer.”

“YOU CAN’T REPLACE BOBBY HATFIELD. There’s no question about it. But there was a lot of guys that could fill in. But that’s like trying to get a mail-order bride. At least I knew Bucky for a long time, (since 2006) and I knew that I really liked him. It dawned on me, ’If this guy can do Steve Perry of Journey, he could probably fill in for Bobby pretty good. So we sat down at the piano to work out some things. And he just fell right in. Now we’re going on our fourth year, and it’s really been magical. Bucky and I say, ‘Man, God must of put this together because this went way too easy and feels way too right.’ ”

north. It was wartime, the coastal road was closed at sundown, and a dependable inland road was needed to transport men and machines. Since prisoners had a choice of enjoying the sunshine and fresh air of Valley Center or the steel and rock walls of San Quentin, there was no known incident or escape. On Sunday afternoons, baseball games were held involving local citizens and prisoners. One of the photos on exhibit shows a game in progress. On April 17, 1948, the local San Quentin convicts completed a realigned and modern roadway known today as Old Highway 395 which is the

western boundary of Valley Center. After the final segment of road was laid, the prison camp buildings were moved to another camp site. The property, on a street with the present-day name of Nelson Way, sat vacant until the early 1960's when a RV campground was established. A 21-acre nursery later opened on the site. Many of the photos in the collection were taken or collected in the 1940's by the late Laurin Portis of Escondido, a civilian employee of Caltrans who worked as a rock mason alongside the prisoners. As we enter the Year of the Rat, the San Diego Humane Society still has more than 40 rats available for adoption across its three campuses, in Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego. In October a woman contacted SDHS for help. Her pet rat population had gotten out of control and she wished to relinquish all of her animals so they could find good homes. SDHS took in more than 300 rats. Many of the rats were pregnant, so the number of rats quickly rose to more than 600. The majority of those rats have been adopted, but there are still

dozens waiting to find homes. Although rats are not as common as other small rodents, they make great pets. Domestic rats are physiologically and psychologically different from their wild counterparts. They are very social, smart and affectionate with humans. Rats eat pellets, veggies and fruit. Domestic rats stay clean by grooming themselves several times a day like a cat. They are very popular as classroom pets, because they like to interact with people. After several minutes, the older worker had enough. 'Why don't you put your money where your mouth is,' he said. 'I'll bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that building, that you won't be able to wheel back.' 'You're on, old man,' the braggart replied. 'Let's see you do it.'

The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to the young man, he said, 'All right, Dumb Ass, get in.' Never mess with old people.

Gomez, came your reply (from the editor/publisher of The Paper, Lyle E. Davis): "Friedrich recently lost a close friend and he is still grieving. We anticipate his return soon but we do not intend on pushing him. He needs time to heal. Thanks for your email."

Mr. Davis, after reading your explanation, my daughter just broke down and cried. We had just personally met Friedrich Gomez, the latter part of December, just a month ago. My daughter and her two friends were obviously overlyexcited when they first met him, as if he were some sort of Rock Star (with his long hair, feathered earring, he does fit that image).

Anyway, my daughter Jennifer spent quite a bit of time chatting excitedly over her cell phone, telling all of her college campus friends, who are also big Friedrich reading fans.

Please extend our sincerest condolences to Friedrich Gomez. We all had no idea. And certainly, give him all the time he needs to recover from his recent loss. And to you, Mr. Lyle Davis, I must point out that during our conversation with Friedrich last December, he spoke of you with such great warmth and deep affection. He even confessed that he thought of you more as a "father" than just a close friend. Trust me, those very words made my family feel great admiration for you, Mr. Davis. Perhaps even envious of you.

"California Dreaming" was one of my favorites because it made us laugh out loud, and then tugged at our heartstrings, all within the same cover story. And whether it's the young college campus students, or older folk, we miss Friedrich's cover stories. We pray he first heals from his loss. God bless him for all the joy and fascination he has brought into this world of ours with his writings. Almost 150 cover stories. What an amazing legacy. I apoligize to SANDAG for being disabled by a heart attack. I might be the only one in this situation but I shouldn’t be for long. After I try riding a tricycle from my house to anywhere. All of us loyal fans of The Paper were crushed when we stopped seeing your star (and gorgeous) cover story writer, Friedrich Gomez disappear from the scene. Then some friends told us about your Man About Town Column which explained why Friedrich has been absent as of late: He had a close friend pass away.

Many, many of our friends remember Friedrich during his Walmart years in San Marcos when he worked there as a very popular cashier. Zillions of people went through that Walmart store and, naturally, zillions of people met Friedrich there as they checked out with their groceries, day after day. We quickly learned that he was very much involved in feeding the homeless through his church. Then he spent his own personal time and money in visiting and helping the elderly. freeways as promised? I’d like to see them answer that in front of Jude Judy!

There is a parable Jesus taught about soils and what they produced. There is the hard soil, the rocky soil, the weedy soil, and the good soil. In planting a garden it is good to know soil types. In our area of Escondido we have an adobe clay soil with a mixture of loam. East of our city there is an abundance of rocky soil, while to the west we have lots of granite. Each type is good for particular crops. We see the avocados growing on the rocky hillsides, and the central and western areas planted in grapes and citrus. Each soil has its own unique value. Humanity follows a similar pattern. Not all persons are the same. There are the cold hearted people who give little or no room for relation-

ships. No matter how loving and kind one is to them there isn’t any real penetration for growth or change. Then there are those who get excited just about anything, but soon burn out when they are challenged to join in the responsibilities of life because they are shallow spirited. It is always good to meet the next group. They are the intelligent, resourceful, enthusiastic, and even helpful. But so many things get in the way of achievement, and seldom do they fulfill their tasks. They are busy pursuing many things. They are the jack of all trades but the master of none. And then there are the good producers. They take on a task and stay with it until it is done. The fruit of their lives is a job well done. What kind of soil person are we, and those we know? Can we be better than we are? What do we want to be? It is important to know and then take whatever steps we can, with the help of God, to become the most productive person possible, both for the self, as well as our community. Pastor Huls

City of San Marcos launches water quality improvement pilot program at Discovery Lake

The City of San Marcos is implementing a pilot program to improve water quality at Discovery Lake as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the preservation of San Marcos’ natural resources.

Two solar-powered ozone injection aeration units will be installed at Discovery Lake starting the first week of February. The aeration units are designed to increase water circulation and inhibit algae growth. The technology was chosen based on the results of a feasibility study that the City conducted last year.

The goal for the program is to protect the environment and keep Discovery Lake clean and beautiful for San Marcos residents and visitors to enjoy. The program will be tested for several months to ensure its effectiveness. The City will then evaluate options to potentially expand the program. The initiative is part of the City’s Stormwater Management Program, which protects the City’s surface waters and maintains their beneficial uses. For more information, visit www.san-marcos.net/stormwater.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido,

In the past you’ve read my thoughts on what SANDAG does or doesn’t do. One of the things that has been on my mind from a fairness point of view is the weighted vote at SANDAG. As a short background, when a vote is taken, all of the cities get a vote, two county supervisors and one San Diego city council rep. Normally, the city of San Diego is represented by the mayor and the President of the Council. Well, a weighted vote can be taken if two members of the board call for it. So, depending on the size of the city or area you represent your vote is weighted. In practical terms, the city of Chula Vista and the city of San Diego could win every vote based on a weighted vote. As an example, the weighted vote of those two cities approved the bike paths in the city of San Diego at the cost of 5.5 million per mile. Now that you understand the process, next week I’ll tell you what concerns me. Semper Fi, Mac

all the Austrian/German customers that trafficked through his grocery lane.

When I first met him, he took my breath away. Shy. Soft spoken. Long hair and blue eyes. Very modest. And I could instantly tell he was a decent human being. His coworkers said he never swears. Never gets angry with rude customers. And always helped poor families when they didn't have enough money to take their groceries home. His closest friends at the San Marcos Walmart said once you get to know him, he "opens up more" and can be "very, very funny and entertaining."

Walmart's corporate offices in Bentonville, Arkansas put Friedrich on their Worldwide Website, complete with his bio and personal interests for all the Walmart employees (around the world to read about him). He was that popular. And one of his closest friends, Klaus Schumann, showed me the website photos. My family is part German (from Stuttgart) and we

enjoyed chatting with him in German. Please tell him we love him. Miss him. And pray that he quickly recovers from his sorry. He has done so much for this world of ours. Now it's time we help him during his own hour of need.

Paseo Santa Fe Takes Shape

Construction on the next phases of the City’s long-range plan to create a vibrant, walkable district along downtown’s S. Santa Fe Avenue continues and the final construction of Phase III will be completed in late 2021. This project area is known as the Paseo Santa Fe district. The first phase, completed in 2016, included renovating the blighted area from Main Street to Ocean View Drive. Phase II extends from Ocean View Drive to Terrace Drive and Phase III continues the project to Civic Center Drive. The upgrades to the sewer, stormwater, and water infrastructure have been completed and the overhead utility lines have been placed underground adding to the beautification of the area. The roundabout is under construction at Guajome and Terrace Drives and the street surface amenities, such as the street lamps, landscaping, and new sidewalks will then be installed. Transnet and SANDAG funding, as well as a State Water Resource grant are helping to fund the project. Through innovative planning, creative programs, and strong community partnerships, Vista is removing blight along the corridor and creating healthy neighborhoods. Check online at CityofVista.com for construction updates.

“Change is inevitable, Progress is not” Max McKeown

Max McKeown is a contemporary writer/consultant/researcher from the UK. The Windows7 to Windows10 transition underlined his observation. For many of us, Windows10 represents change without progress. The end of support for the Win7 OS (operating system) was far more impactful than the end of support on previous Windows OS because we depend more on our PCs today than ever before. Windows Enterprise users (schools corporations and governments) have high paid ITs (information

Shriners There are millions of people who have seen grown men riding around in little miniature cars. Likewise, there are millions of people who have seen maroon hats on men, and thinking they were from the Middle East. They might have even seen Sydney Greenstreet wearing such a hat in the movie Casablanca. Well, the little cars (called tin lizzies) and the hats (called fezes) are part of an organization called the Shriners, which is part of the overall Masonic organization.

The Shriners is usually referred to as the “fun” part of the Masons. The Shriners got its start in 1870, when a group of Masons were having lunch at the Knickerbocker Cottage in Manhattan. There, they discussed starting a unit, or part, of the Masons which would stress fun and fellowship. Two of those at the lunch, Dr. Walter Fleming and William Florence ran with the idea. Florence was a well-known actor, and while on tour in France, attended a party given by an Arabian diplomat. The entertainment at the party included the guests becoming members of a secret society. Florence took notes, and shared them with Fleming when he returned to New York. Fleming then took the ideas and converted them into what later would become the “Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.)” . We have to figure things out for ourselves. Enterprise users have standardized applications and procedures making the transition and training fairly straightforward. Home and small business users have no standard applications or procedures. There are many ways to accomplish even the simplest tasks and few users do things the same way. Today, three weeks after the end of support, between 25%and 30% of home and small business PCs Windows users still run Windows 7. Many have used Windows 7 for years and have established unique usage patterns and methods. Over the years they set their PCs up exactly the way they want them. They know where to find everything and how it works and life is good. Then Microsoft ended support for Win7 and the entire PC industry joined in pushing users to upgrade to Wind10. Applications, browsers, Internet and Email services, social media, banking and commercial sites are starting to limit access for Win7 holdouts.

While most users are able to take the transition to Win10 in stride, for others it can become a nightmare. Addiction to non-webmail Email clients like Outlook, Outlook Express and AOL and other pro-

Florence and Fleming were initiated as the first Shriners on August 13, 1870, and eleven others were initiated ten months later. A Middle Eastern theme was adopted, and Temples were soon established. Temples were replaced by Shrine Centers or Shrine Auditoriums. By 1878, there were 425 Shriners in 13 temples in eight states, and ten years later there were 7210 members in 48 temples. By 1938 there were 340,000 members in the United States. By the mid-1900s the Shriners were generally thought of as the leading secret lodge in prestige and wealth in the United States. The Shriners Hospitals for Children is the Shriners’ charitable arm. There are 22 hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The original goal of the hospitals was to treat orthopedic injuries, diseases, and birth defects in children. However, they now deal with orthopedic care, burn treatment, cleft lip and palate care, and spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

For many years the Shriners have been noted for sponsoring the East-West All-Star football game. That game has raised a great deal of attention to the Shriners. Likewise,

more help must go “on the clock.” Most don’t need extra help but some really do.

Session would undoubtedly be royally entertained.

These frustrations can create unrealistic expectations. Some customers feel that the upgrade process should include making their Win10 computer look, feel and run exactly as it did with Win7. Others assume that the upgrade process obligates our technicians to spend as many hours as it takes to make them comfortable with all their applications in Windows 10. We allocate between 2 and 21/2 hours to the entire Win7 to 10 upgrade process. This includes spending ¼ hour showing users Win 10 and the location of their files. Those who need

In particular, John Wayne’s Shriners items have been very popular among collectors. For example, five of John Wayne’s Shriners identification cards from the 1970s sold for $2151 in a Heritage Auction in 2011.

Also, three of Wayne’s fezes from the 1960s and 1970s went for over $4000. All of the fezes were maroon felt with tassels. One fez also said “Ambassador-at-Large” on the front, a designation that meant that his Shriners responsibilities included meeting and talking with prospective members. However, it was John Wayne’s 14K Shriners ring from the 1960s that sold for over $13,000 at a Heritage Auction. Most likely he wore it as a pinkie ring.

Finally, a vintage piece of Shrine memorabilia went for nearly $4000 at auction. It was a 1934 formal invitation signed by the likes of Hollywood celebrities Clark Gable, Carole Lambard, Frank Morgan, Will Rogers, Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Gary Cooper, and many others, requesting that the 1935 Shrine Imperial Council Session be held in Los Angeles. It makes you think that the Shriners who attended that Imperial Council

We recognize the genuine need for the additional help some folks require in order to get back to using their computers constructively after an OS upgrade. Very often their issues are fairly basic and would represent a poor use of our skilled techs more expensive time. This week we will establish a directory of qualified low cost tech helpers that can help users in their home or business. The idea is to bridge the gap between costly IT type assistance and basic hands on help. These people will not be our employees and payment will be between the user and provider. We’ll screen them and count on you to provide feedback. So call us if you need help or would like to help others.

So the next time you see a maroon fez, or you see a little tin lizzie, you will associate them with the Shriners, a philanthropic organization that does wonderful work.
