met Irene, an animal-rights activist, after she read my story on animal-abuse for the San Diego Union-Tribune Newspaper. Irene passed away in 2016. DATELINE: HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA. Over half a century ago, something very mysterious appeared. The likes of which the world had never
before seen, or experienced. Nestled at the foot of the famed Hollywood Hills lies a mysterious mansion that is home to one of the world’s most influential and secret societies, whose roots extend back in time several thousands of years, predating even the secret rites and shrouded traditions of the ancient Freemasons. A secret society whose arcane
craft and inner workings were only whispered and shared amongst a chosen breed of men who lived and breathed more than 27 centuries before the birth of Christ.
A MAGIC CASTLE IS CREATED. A mysterious edifice, a Victorian-style castle, indeed, arose in the Hollywood hills and its founders were a triad of

wizards, brothers Milt and Bill Larsen, Jr. and “Princess Irene Larsen,” all of whom had lineage to one of the world’s most influential and powerful secret societies. A society so ancient and resilient, that it not only survived from the cradle of human civilization, but its related fraternities encircle the world – to this very day. On January 2, 1963, this trio of sorcerers christened their newly-established Victorian building as “The Magic Castle.” And it would become the official world headquarters for the “Academy of Magical Arts” (AMA), and it is the private domain for magical members, only. Irene Larsen would be the first AMA member, holding card No. 1.
And there the Magic Castle sits today, like the ancient, mythological Sphinx, guarding its entryway and preventing any visitors who do not possess both magical membership and the secret password from entering its inner sanctum. In the wizarding world, it is the

The boss walked into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was down and his fly area wide open. His assistant walked up to him and said, 'This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?'
The boss told her he knew he'd closed the garage door, and walked into his office puzzled by the question.
As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly noticed his fly was open, and zipped it up. He then understood his assistant's question about his 'garage door.'

The ledger of names that have trafficked through the Magic Castle comprise the world’s most prepotent movers-and-shakers: U. S. Magic Castle also provides a most unique range of bars on various floors, as well as a lavish restaurant for guests to dine like royalty. There are also lavish showrooms and plush theaters where the world’s foremost practitioners of the ancient art of magic weave startling illusions that would curl Merlin’s beard.
But, more of these surprises later in this article. Let’s take a rare look at the beginning.
HISTORIC ROOTS & THE BUILDING-UP OF HOLLYWOOD. How could such a world-famous landmark such as this ever find its way into existence? The creation of the Magic Castle is as remarkable as the magic within. The edifice was originally built in 1910, as a private home for the prominent Lane family. Mrs. Olive Lane purchased the site where the Castle now sits, in 1903.
The Lane residence, also called the Lane Mansion, was first conceived and designed by architects, Dennis and Farwell, in 1903. The actual permit for Hollywood’s Secret Society Cont. on Page 3

Dear Readers. This story about the puppies just broke my heart! If you know of someone who had a bunch of puppies for a short time, a week or two, then all of a sudden they no longer had them, would you please relay that information to the Humane Society. Someone that would do what this person or persons did is just despicable and deserves to be arrested and pay the price for what they did. Thank you! Evelyn Madison

building the home was issued in March of 1909, the same year it is widely reported to have been completed. However, a Los Angeles Times article in 1910 reports the mansion as only nearing completion. In 1922, the ownership of the Chateauesque building was duly transferred to Mrs. Lane’s son, Rollin, when she passed on.
The Rollin B. Lane family is recognized for its philanthropy and as being harbingers in the development of what is now known as Hollywood. Rollin, himself, was a lawyer of the first order, as well as an astute banker, newspaper editor, and cogent real estate investor.
His hand in building-up Hollywood was through wellconceived property development, and serving on the old Hollywood Board of Trade. Lane made audacious investments in the infant stages of the San Fernando Valley, as well as investing heavily into California’s San Joaquin Valley. Through his involvement, the San Joaquin Valley blossomed
“This is a heartbreaking case, because we would have taken those puppies at San Diego Humane Society, no questions asked,” said Laurel Monreal, sergeant of humane law enforcement for San Diego Humane Society. “Anyone who needs help with their animals can bring them to us. We are an open admission shelter.” The puppies were cold, dehydrated and covered in feces and urine inside the bag. At the Humane Society, the puppies were treated by medical staff, given fluids, fed multiple times and bathed before being moved into foster homes for around-the-clock care. The Lane Mansion morphed into a multi-family home in the 1940s. It was further divided; first becoming a home for the elderly, and then it became an assortment of tiny apartments. The once-majestic home that was a close duplicate of the 1897 Kimberly Crest House and Gardens in Redlands, California, had deteriorated into a sad shadow of its former self. The Grand Dame of yesteryear had lost all of its historical and architectural integrity. Through the years it has been variously described as Gothic Renaissance, and even a liberal translation of a 16th-century French fortress design. MAGICAL INTERVENTION SAVES THE DAY. The onceregal edifice was approaching its grisly appointment with the wrecking ball. Its savior came in the person of Mr. Milt Larsen. Larsen, an NBC writer for the popular Truth or Consequences television game show, successfully negotiated with then-owner of the building, Thomas O. Glover. In so doing, Milt, Bill, and Irene

GHOSTLY SPECIAL EFFECTS ADDED. As the Magic Castle evolved, so also did the secrets behind the special effects, which became the Castle’s hallmark. John Shrum, art director from television’s “The Tonight Show,” became enamored with the magical monolith, and procured the special effects talents from NBC. A team of stalwart individuals came in on their “off hours” to lend their spooky expertise. Milt Larsen, himself a most inventive magician, constantly added to “innate” illusions inside the Castle interior that delight and intrigue visitors. The late James Gordon Williams, an Emmy Awardwinning sound technician, contributed much to the Castle’s special effects. DISNEYLAND’S HAUNTED MANSION COULD’VE DONE BETTER. Prior to the opening of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion attraction, Magic Castle owner, Milt Larsen, was among an elite “esprit de corps” invited to view its inner workings. After consulting with Milt, the Disney Research and Development Team confessed that they could have saved two years in special effects experimentation for their Haunted Mansion if they would have tapped Milt Larsen’s reservoir of knowledge beforehand. Today, the Magic Castle remains preeminent in its spotlight as being truly world-famous, attracting a galaxy of international giants in the field of pop recording artists, television and movie film stars, as well as a most remarkable range of political figures of the first magnitude.

Man About Town
Going through some photographs that have piled up and came across this photo of "Grandma's Farm."
'Course it was Grandpa and Grandma's farm but Grandma was what made it special. Grandpa was a quiet, sometimes grumpy old guy where grandma was always sweet, kind, loving, caring . . . .everything and anything you could ever want in a grandma. She's been dead for almost 60 years but I still think of her often. She's a gal I absolutely worship and always shall.
The front porch was kind of a 'mud room,' a room on farms where you come in from the fields or the barns and take off your boots and outer clothing before entering the interior of the home. There were two or three rifles and a couple of shotguns always here and we had ready access to them. We had been taught how to use firearms.
The top right window on the front was Aunt Darlene's bedroom (Dolly, she was called when she moved to New York). I remember one afternoon going upstairs and seeing Darlene crying with grandma comforting her. I suppose Darlene was 18 at the time and she had just had This photo of 'grandma's house' her heart broken by some is modernized. New roof, prob- boyfriend. Many times I would
with the Task Force to stop the vehicle Golden was driving. Before Officers could get into a position to stop the vehicle, Golden drove to the 1000 block of Rincon Rd where he fled on foot. Golden entered a residence in the 1300 block of Rincon Rd, which was occupied by a female who was a known associate of Golden. The female left the residence and Golden barricaded himself inside.
Assistance from the SWAT team and the Emergency Negotiations Team was requested at the location. Hostage negotiators spoke with Golden for approximately 3 hours. At about 2:15pm, the negotiators successfully negotiated a peaceful surrender of Golden. No one was injured during the incident and no property was damaged. Golden was taken into custody and was taken to the Vista Detention Center and booked on the warrants. Man Hit and Killed by Train in Carlsbad
This past Saturday a man was struck and killed by a Pacific Surfliner train in Carlsbad. It happened just before 8:15 a.m. at the Carlsbad Village Station, according to sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins. The man jumped onto the tracks as the southbound Amtrak approached, going 72 mph, sheriff’s officials said.
The tracks at the station were closed shortly after the incident while sheriff's deputies investigated. Passengers
sleep in Darlene's bed after she had gone off to 'the big city.' I remember waking to a warm summer Minnesota breeze - often awakened by nature's alarm clock, a crowing pheasant in the fields. There was just something about the warm, sweet smell of Minnesota air that was different from that of Omaha. The top two windows on the north side were Uncle Dean's bedroom. All kinds of model airplanes hanging from the ceiling - clearly a "man's room" though a young man. Dean played football and had a mischievous sense of humor.
On the bottom of the north side, the left window was the living room, the right window was to grandma and grandpa's bedroom.
I remember the living room so well. Grandma had a great big ol' leather couch there that simply invited nice naps. It was most pleasant, falling asleep in a nice, warm couch that smelled of real leather . . . not naugahyde.

Tracks in the area were re-opened by 10:30 a.m., but Surfliner trains were expected to continue to experience delays while congestion from the track closure dissipates. The Carlsbad Village Station was closed for several hours due to the investigation. It has since reopened.
No information about the man killed was available. Escondido Man Charged With Beating Sister to Death Involved in Shooting Death of Escondido Woman
In 2017 Catherine Kennedy, 55, was shot and killed en route home from Bible study. It turns out that the 25 year old man, Jose Entrique Bautista, accused of beating his older sister to death two weeks ago was also involved in that gang related shooting.
Bautista disappeared immediately after the Kennedy shooting. A year later he was found in Nebraska and extradited back in 2018. He was jailed on a charge of felony vandalism as well as some lesser charges, including a probation violation. Bautista was able to make bail and about two months after being released police say he beat his 27-year old sister, Laura Elizabeth Bautista, who died three days later at a hospital.
I also remember from the early years, kerosene lamps, hand crank telephones, and no interior bathrooms. One took a walk to the privy. Privy's I don't miss much. I also remember when indoor plumbing arrived - and electricity! Whenever we'd arrive for a holiday from the big city of Omaha I'd head to the hand crank phone and ring two short, three long, which was how I reached my cousin, Doug, who lived in a huge metropolis known as Bergen. Bergen had, maybe five stores, and, maybe 50 people.
Whenever someone from the Leverenz home answered the phone, often it was Doug, you'd hear 'click,' 'click,' 'click,' and you knew that everyone in both Cottonwood and Jackson County knew the Davis family had arrived. This was the benefit (or curse) of the party line. Doug's mom and my mom were twin sisters. Doug and I have always been very close and remain so to this day.

PRESIDENT REAGAN & ARMED SECRET SERVICE. When President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan visited the Magic Castle, their entourage consisted of seven White House Secret Service men. We didn't have the front door on the north side that is shown here. Clearly the new owners have done a lot of remodeling. Our 'grandma's home' had that 'lived in look.' This photos looks like something out of Home and Gardens magazine.
We didn't have the propane tank that is shown in the right side of the photo - and the outbuildings all appear to be fairly new. For sure, the fence is new. In the foreground, out of the range of the camera lens, was a long driveway from the country road to the house, and to the right of that was grandma's orchard. Lots of apples, plums, pears - and lots of places to play cowboys and indians.
To the left of the house and out of the camera's range, was a hill that led down to a creek (or, as we called it, "a crick.). We'd run down to the creek to play, to build dams, and while away an afternoon. If we were bare-

ENGLAND’S PRINCE CHARLES. Hollywood’s Magic Castle once owned “Genii, the Conjuror’s Magazine,” its most powerful flagship publication, run by its late editor/publisher, Bill Larsen, Jr. Its worldwide influence in the wizarding world was formidable. Great Britain’s Prince Charles, himself, an avid fan; but in addition to that, he is an accomplished magician in his own right. In 1975, Prince Charles auditioned and passed a legerdemain (sleight of hand) test to gain rightful membership in England’s most prestigious magic fraternity, The Magic Circle, based in London. Prince Charles adroitly performed the ancient “Cups and Balls,” considered one of the oldest recorded magic feats, as well as being a routine calibrated to test one’s dexterity and misdirection skills, the quintessential elements in all magic. The ancient Cups and Balls magic routine is depicted on the walls of a burial chamber in Beni Hasan, Egypt, dated 2500 B. C. However, how old the Cups and Balls routine truly is remains shrouded in antiquity.

we're gonna show you true California living. It's a bit different out here, may take some getting used to, but you'll manage. One of the things we'd like to introduce you to is our new religion. Mary and I have become members of Hare Krishna. We're going to have a feast and it's all kind of a sacred ceremony. We'll meet in the Feast House, gather around a reflecting pool. We take all our clothes off, becoming at one with nature, and slowly dance and hum and chant mystical phrases as we prepare ourselves for the feast. We enter, naked, into the sacred pool and when we emerge, we share in an enormous feast of fruits, berries and nuts. Doesn't that sound exciting?"
I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the look on Bill's face. It was a look of horror and I could sense he was thinking, "what in the hell have we gotten into? What have lyle and mary gotten themselves into? I want out!"
I have great difficulty keeping a straight face and I could contain myself no longer. I burst out laughing, as did Mary. Bill and Barb finally recognized we were pulling their legs. I could sense a big sigh of relief.

Regardless, these two fraternities, England’s Magic Circle, and America’s Magic Castle, carry the torch of sorcery that extends back to the dawn of civilization. History edifies us on this ancient, secret society shrouded in “sub-rosa” tradition. Sub rosa was the ancients’ tradition of hanging a rose from a table top, or other object, to signify that all participants gathered were sworn to secrecy, and only then were meetings allowed to proceed. MOVIE STARS & FAMOUS VIPS. Because the Magic Castle has a long history and reputation of having Hollywood’s greatest movie stars, world-famous singers and countless VIPs, visitors must adhere to strict guidelines. There is no photography allowed inside (all cameras are left in the lobby); neither are guests allowed to seek autographs. Such rules make the Castle a safe refuge from the notorious Paparazzi, as well as from rabid movie-star fans. Many of Hollywood’s greatest stars practically “lived” at the Magic Castle. Immortal movie giant, Cary Grant, served on the Magic Castle Board of MEN ARE JUST HAPPY PEOPLE
This needs no explanation - and is a fun read, no matter your gender.
Men Are Just Happier People! What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress - $5,000. Tux rental - $100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them.
New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a five -pack. Two pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes.
Directors and even made rare magical performances there under the stage name “The Great Carini.” All the tea in China nor all the money in Fort Knox could get Cary Grant to regularly perform outside the Castle walls as “The Great Carini.” It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Castle members and visitors to see. Since then, every legendary singer from Barbra Streisand to Frank Sinatra, and every TV star from Johnny Carson onward has succumbed to the Magic Castle’s magical charms. From movie greats Tony Curtis (who portrayed Houdini in the 1953 movie of the same name), to the present day, the glitz and glamour of Hollywood is nonstop at the Castle.
Johnny Carson occasionally performed magic on The Tonight Show, as did the great Orson Welles and comedy legend Steve Martin whose hilarious magic act was titled “The Great Flydini,” and which can still be viewed on YouTube. Popular actor Neil Patrick Harris once served as the

President of the Board of Directors of Hollywood’s Magic Castle for two terms.
Hollywood’s long, secret loveaffair with the conjuring arts surprises many even today. The list of Hollywood celebrities who proved skillful magicians in real life, include: Milton Berle, Steve Allen, Walt Disney, Tony Curtis, dancer/actor Fred Astaire, Barbara Stanwyck, Jackie Gleason, Jimmy Stewart, TV game show host, Bob Barker, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Jerry Lewis, Arsenio Hall, and countless others too numerous to mention. Movie stars Rita Hayworth and Joseph Cotton once served as magic assistants in Orson Welles’ illusion show. Actor/director Woody Allen levitated a person on the cover of the Magic Castle’s Genii Magazine. And Jason Alexander (“George Costanza” on the Seinfeld sitcom) performed at the Magic Castle.
The long list of VIPs who were well-versed in the secret craft of magic seems endless: U. S. General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr., commander of all coalition forces in the Gulf War, was an active member in the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM). Boxing great Muhammad Ali and U. S. President George H. W. Bush (the elder) all performed as wizards.
THE DAY CASTLE RULES WERE CHALLENGED. Whether you are President of the United States or visiting royalty from abroad, there are unbreakable rules set in place for all members and visitors to abide by. All visitors must be 21 years of age or older; be a member or a visitor with a Guest Card from a member. One strict evening rule is that all men must wear coats and ties; women evening dresses or equivalent. However, there have been awkward moments when these rules were, embarrassingly, challenged. Back in August of 2010, I spoke with Magic Castle founder, Milt Larsen (affectionately known as “Uncle Miltie”), and he told me of one high profile occasion where the criterion for evening attire was challenged. Television producer-director, Dick Carson, brother of famed talk show host,
Johnny Carson, once showed up at the celebrated Castle foyer, by himself, but without tie. Anticipating such scenarios, the Castle keeps a supply of ties for guest who may have forgotten to wear one. The front desk host offered Dick Carson a complimentary tie for the evening – but he flatly refused to wear it. Dick was reminded of protocol: no tie, no entrance. In turn, Dick reminded the hostess who he was, implying that he was above such rulings. The situation escalated as both sides remained steadfast.
Unable to reach resolution, the hostess called upstairs to speak with Milt Larsen. Informed of the stalemate, Milt placed a call to Johnny Carson and asked him to make a “judgement call,” regarding his brother, Dick. An honorable member of the Castle, himself, Johnny fumed and said: “PUT MY GODDAMNED BROTHER ON THE PHONE!!” Milt recalled that day, “Johnny apparently read his brother the Riot Act, and that was that.” Dick put on the tie.
Johnny Carson loved the art of magic and respected the rich tradition behind it. As a small boy in Norfolk, Nebraska, Johnny yearned to find fame as a conjuror, and even performed under the stage name of “The Great Carsoni.” He never relinquished his love for magic, even when the hand of providence moved him onto a different path. As with Carson, fellow TV talk show host, Dick Cavett, was a life-long wizard and a frequent visitor to the Magic Castle.
Milt Larsen told me of another colorful anecdote: “Johnny Carson had Orson Welles as his guest on The Tonight Show. Running out of time, toward the end of the show, Johnny said to Orson, ‘Why don’t we go to the Magic Castle after the show?’ Well, The Tonight Show was recorded about 6 p.m., and then it would air at 11:30 p.m. Well, both Johnny and Orson showed up at the Castle about 7:30 p.m. for dinner and to see a magic show, then they left . . . before the actual Tonight Show was on the air! Well, sometime after 11:30 Hollywood’s Secret Society Cont. on Page 8
Developmental Disabilities Deserve Funding
California has been transitioning from residential to communitybased care for people with developmental disabilities, with the state expecting to see substantial cost savings. While Gov. Newsom’s budget proposal diverts that money to pay for other state programs, myself and other legislators want to provide a secure source of funding for some of the most vulnerable people in the state. We are calling on the Governor to support Californians with developmental disabilities and their caregivers by permanently dedicating savings from the closure of developmental centers to increase pay for service providers.
Gov. Newsom’s first budget proposal would provide caregivers for Californians with developmental disabilities a minimal funding increase, while counting $21.6 million in “savings” from the closure of developmental centers. With a statewide surplus of more than $21 billion, there is something seriously wrong with the state's priorities if we can’t find room in the budget to care

for this vulnerable population.
Locally based agencies caring for the developmentally disabled operate throughout the state. But due to the state’s low level of funding, these agencies are often forced to operate on a shoestring budget, which is seriously impacting their ability to continue providing care for California’s DD population. The state’s developmental centers have been serving the needs of the Developmentally Disabled for well over 100 years. With this long history, I have joined my colleagues to support directing savings generated by the centers’ closure toward programs that continue to care for these vulnerable Californians.

Halfway between the house and the creek were a bunch of tee-pee shaped wooden huts. These were pig huts. We'd often play in them. I can only imagine how we must have smelled when grandma called us in for lunch.
Way, way early in life, Uncle Dean had a Shetland pony named "Bing." Apparently Uncle Dean got busy playing football and meeting girls because Bing foundered. (Foundering is when the horse's hooves are not trimmed and they grow and grow and grow, curling upwards like an elf's slippers. The animal is eventually unable to get around.) Not sure but I think Bing eventually had to be put down. In the early years there was also a dog named Tarzan.

windshield designed to pop out during an accident, and a center "cyclops" headlight which would turn when steering at angles greater than 10 degrees in order to improve visibility around corners during night driving. All of these developments were years ahead of their time. Having run out of time to develop the 589-cubic-inch engine, Tucker settled on a modified aircraft engine.
The Automobile Man and his Dream
Preston Tucker, born Sept. 21, 1903, is most remembered for his 1948 Tucker sedan, initially nicknamed the "Tucker Torpedo." The car was futuristic, introducing many features that have since become widely adapted for modern cars. Tucker grew up near Detroit and was obsessed with automobiles from an early age. During World War II, T u c k e r became associated with A n d r e w J a c k s o n Higgins, builder of Liberty ships, PT boats and landing craft. Tucker moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, to serve as a vicepresident of Higgins Industries, specifically in charge of the Higgins-Tucker Aviation division. This entity produced gun turrets, armament, and engines for Higgins' torpedo boats.
After the war, the public was ready for totally new car designs, but the Big Three Detroit automakers (Ford, General Motors and Chrysler) had not developed any new models since 1941, and were in no hurry to introduce them. That provided great opportunities for independent automakers to rapidly produce cars. Tucker's first design appeared in Science Illustrated magazine in December 1946, showing a futuristic version of the car with a hydraulic drive system. The motoring public was now excited about the Tucker.
But, in 1949, production of the Tucker '48 was shut down amidst scandal and controversial accusations of stock fraud. The 1988 movie Tucker: The Man and His Dream, starring Jeff Bridges, is based on Tucker's life surrounding the car's production. Tucker's specifications for his revolutionary car called for a rear engine, a low-RPM 589 cubic inch engine with hydraulic valves instead of a camshaft, fuel injection, direct-drive torque converters on each rear wheel (instead of a transmission), disc brakes, the location of all instruments within the diameter and reach of the steering wheel, a padded dashboard, and self-sealing tubeless tires.
Also, the design had independent springless suspension, a chassis that protected occupants in a side impact, a roll bar within the roof, a laminated
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was embittered after small automaker Henry J. Kaiser was given millions of dollars in grants towards development of his new Kaiser and Frazer cars, but reportedly squandered the money. While Tucker took no money from the federal government, SEC kept him under close scrutiny.
An SEC trial began on Oct. 4, 1949, and the factory was closed on the very same day. At that point, only 38 Tucker '48s had been built. A corps of 300 loyal employees returned to the factory (some without pay) and finished assembly of another 13 cars for a total of 51 cars.
The SEC contended Tucker never intended to produce a car. Throughout the trial, the SEC report on Tucker was classified as "secret" and even though his attorneys were never allowed to view or read it, it was leaked to the press. The prosecution and defense continued debating until the judge demanded the SEC prosecutors "get down to the meat of the case and start proving the conspiracy charge." Tucker's defense attorneys surprised everyone by refusing to call any witnesses. Defense attorney Daniel Glasser told the court, "It is impossible to present a defense when there has been no offense." Kirby invited the jury to take a ride in one of the eight Tucker '48s parked in front of the courthouse. The verdict came in "not guilty" on all counts. Despite the outcome of the trial, speculation was whether Tucker genuinely intended to produce a new car and bring it to market, or whether the entire enterprise was a sham. The Tucker Automobile Club of America has amassed more than 400,000 drawings/blueprints, corporate documents, and letters suggesting Tucker was, in fact, planning to mass-produce the Tucker '48. He had hired more than 1,900 employees. Preston Tucker's reputation rebounded after the acquittal. His optimism was remarkable; after the trial was over, he was quoted as saying, "Even Henry Ford failed the first time out."
But, it was not to be. Tucker’s assets were auctioned off publicly, but two remaining Tucker '48 cars were given to Tucker, and his mother. He died of lung cancer on Dec. 26, 1956, at the age of 53, and is buried in Flat Rock, Michigan. Today, entrepreneur Elon Musk, builder of the electric-powered Tesla, no doubt understands much of the turmoil Preston Tucker endured.

proprietor, Milt Larsen, told me of an amusing story behind the construction of the Haunted Wine Cellar. Prior to its opening, the conscientious janitors had cleaned away the fake cobwebs the night before! The spooky cobwebs had to be quickly replaced so that the Haunted Wine Cellar could live up to its ghostly name.
THE NORTHSIDE UNDERGROUND. The second underground area is on the north side of the Magic Castle and is NOT connected to the other (south side) underground, where the Haunted Wine Cellar is located. In regards to the north side underground, its one entry point can be accessed only from the second floor (which can be tricky, pun intended). Its entry point is not far from the Palace of Mystery showroom, the most lavish of Magic Castle theaters. Again, I did not know where the entry point was located which descends to the underground area that contains the Inner Circle Ballroom and museum. We noticed a group

of cheerful visitors, drinks in hand, nonchalantly stroll past us, talking and laughing as they went by. Talking to my immediate circle of friends, it suddenly occurred to all of us that the cheerful party of men and women who just passed by, were now completely silent. In fact, they had completely disappeared from our view. Looking straight at the wall in the distance, we could not see where they could have gone, as they seemed to have all vanished into thin air! Curious, we retraced their steps and suddenly, it appeared to us – a previously unseen, mysterious open pathway appeared to us on our right, which was completely invisible to us from where we previously had stood!
We passed through and downward we went, deeper and deeper, one dog-leg left turn, till we heard the cheerful and collective voices of people, talking, laughing, and many dancing at the Inner Circle Ballroom dance floor. The Inner Circle Ballroom is wonderful for dancing on special occasions, such as on New Year’s Eve, Halloween’s Masquerade Ball, and
Valentine’s Day. Like Alice In Wonderland chasing the white rabbit down a magical hole, we all sighed at our journey and headed straight to the famous W. C. Fields Bar to have a stiff drink.
The Inner Circle Ballroom is some 30-feet below the Parlour of Prestidigitation showroom. This subterranean area also houses rare memorabilia from Hollywood’s Golden Movie Era. The Ballroom’s ceiling reflects what is known as an “infinity illusion.” Though the ceiling is only one-inch thick, the viewer sees an endless, infinite sky above them. (Note: Sometimes this illusion is not “turned on,” so viewers should remind a Castle staff member.)
GHOSTS & PHANTOMS. Hollywood’s World Famous Magic Castle has its share of world-famous ghosts, phantoms, and things that go bumpin-the-night. The large men’s restroom, adjacent to the Grand Salon Staircase on the Main Floor, is haunted in a manner reminiscent of “The Phantom of the Opera” lore and legend. As such, strange voices seem to emanate from the mirrors inside, often to the unexpected delight of the men tending to their business. One humorous moment was when a large mountain of a man at the
urinal was suddenly insulted by the resident phantom singing, “It’s A Small World, After All.” The man and his company of friends had fits of uncontrolled laughter. Meanwhile, I got off rather easy. At my moment of relief, the phantom’s voice materialized briefly to inform me that I was, “A quart low!” Not all restrooms are haunted. The women’s restroom at this particular location, not far from the men’s room, also has its own unique experiences.
HAUNTED PHONE BOOTH. On the 2nd level, adjacent to the Palace of Mystery showroom is a very old-fashioned wooden phone booth from another era – and another world -- reminiscent of the Twilight Zone. In King’s English: It is haunted! You may enter it, close the door, and attempt to make a long-distance call. Hmm, “long distance” at the Magic Castle may, well, reach the non-living. Consequently, a rather unwelcomed guest may wish to join you so, just try to make the best of things. (One person at a time, please, in the Haunted Phone Booth.)
Vega loves her friends, both human and feline. She greets guests at the door. Vega was transferred from another shelter through the FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) program. The $100 adoption fee for Vega includes medical exams, vaccinations, spay, and registered microchip. For more information call 760-7536413, visit Rancho Coastal Humane Society at 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas, or log on to SDpets.org.
Also, one of the tables where guests sit, chat, and enjoy their drinks is haunted by a mischievous poltergeist. Ask which one it is. Unsuspecting guests are often startled to find that their drinks, purses, or whatever else is placed on their table, begin to mysteriously move or change places whenever they look away. So don’t be surprised if unseen forces are at work, moving objects and even Hollywood’s Secret Society Cont. on Page 11

the education in those countries is directed to hate the Jews and expel, if not destroy, them. We believe that the holocaust is a thing of the past and yet, some continue to say it is a task left unfinished.
A CAUSE FOR CONCERN
Who are these people who live with this hatred and prejudice? How does it thrive in the minds and lives of so many? And why is it worsening in our world today? We don’t have to go far to find the answer. Much is promoted in our Universities by liberal professors and some of our politicians, as reported in a recent issue of THE WEEK, Feb.1, 2019, The Left’s Acceptance of AntiSemitism.
The truth is that, according to world news, many nations such as Iran, France, England, Canada, Australia, and, yes, even the United States have seen a proliferation of anti-Semitism. The Pittsburgh shooting is illustrative of this. As we can see, this bigotry and prejudice is not limited to the Palestinians or Arab States. Much of

GHOSTLY EXPERIENCES AT THE GRAND SALON BAR. The Haunted Bar Stool is located at the Grand Salon Bar on the first floor. Secretly inquire from the barkeep or one of the Knights of the Castle who stroll the premises, which stool it is, then – without drawing suspicion – make certain a member of your group sits there. Then, just sit, talk shop, and watch the fun begin. The person perched on The Haunted Bar Stool will never forget the experience. It is hilarious because everyone will actually see the illusion first, before the ‘victim’ does!
Ricky is a 6-year-old Domestic Short Hair mix looking for a family to call his own. In his previous home, Ricky lived happily with children and another cat. Since being in our care, Ricky has lived in a foster home. His foster family says he takes a little time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he will be your best friend and follow you everywhere. He loves to cuddle on the couch next to his human pals and enjoys being petted and brushed. This gentle giant will make a wonderful companion. His adoption fee includes his neuter, permanent microchip identification, current vaccinations, 30 days worry free insurance from Trupanion Insurance and a certificate for a free veterinary exam! Ricky is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Drive. To learn more about making him part of your family, please call (619) 299-7012.
Recently, an article appeared in the San Diego Tribune by the General Secretary of the United Nations, warning the world of the danger of antiSemitism and how extensive it is in the world today. There have been over a thousand incidents of Jew-Hatred all over the world. His final word was that the intolerance of so many people in the world towards Jews will spread to all peoples. In other words, we will all become victims of bigotry and prejudice, unless something is done about this evil.
I don’t support the wrongs of any people, even the Jews, or the misuse of the right of speech in this country. However, there is a call to protect all people from the evil of prejudice and bigotry, regardless of race, religion, color, or ideology, and to see that we are all God’s creation. It should concern us greatly that we hear little, if anything, from the pulpits of our churches, government officials, business leaders, entertainers, or sports heroes regarding this matter. We have become a people of fear and compromise. If we don’t speak out, we could well become the victims of this force, which seeks to dominate us with this creeping infection and has done so with many nations and peoples.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones
Vegetatio n clearing in the San Marcos Creek to pave way for future construc tion
Early work on the longpromised San Marcos Creek area improvements is underway. This project is a significant component of the City’s future and will alleviate flooding issues around the creek.
In December, the city started clearing around the San Marcos Creek south of San Marcos Boulevard in preparation for the upcoming construction of the San Marcos Creek Bridge Project. The vegetation removal will continue this month from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays. Location of this work is from San Marcos Boulevard south to Discovery Street and State Route 78 (SR 78) west to Discovery
Street near Lake San Marcos.
Expected to break ground in fall 2019, the San Marcos Creek District Bridge Project will add the needed infrastructure to relieve long-standing flooding issues and improve traffic circulation while also revitalizing and conserving the San Marcos Creek.
Using federal, state and local funds, the project will include two new bridges that span Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz, a promenade trail connecting the two bridges, as well as bike, pedestrian and signal improvements on Discovery Avenue at Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz.
Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido
This week I attended training for new Mayors and C i t y Councilpersons. It was great opportunity to learn some new things and interact with other elected of their communities. We exchanged concerns and ideas about how we think our cities will prosper and be safe or the future. It was a worthwhile event. Prior to attending the training, I had the opportunity to start the week off by going to Miller School and help kick off their
Great Kindness Challenge. I also had meetings with Supervisor Gaspar, Patty Huerta from COMPACT, and other residents looking to make Escondido better.
A fun event that I also attended was the Chamber of Commerce’s Coffee Connection. There were a number of people there and we had the opportunity to discuss the future of Escondido. There are quite a bit of good ideas in this city.
Finally, I start my Meet the Mayor event this month. The first one will be at Cute Cakes at 345 Grand Ave on Feb 29th. Stop and say hello! Semper Fi, Mac

By far, the most famous and popular phantom which haunts the Magic Castle can be found in an ornate room adjacent to the Grand Salon Main Bar on the 1st floor. Her name is “Invisible Irma,” and she plays requests on her piano and answers “yes” and “no” queries. Singing legends Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra became so enamored by the mischievous sprite that they spent protracted periods of time singing along to her piano accompaniment. This has been a rare behindthe-scenes-peek into the early, historic building of the worldfamous Magic Castle and the legend and lore which followed, making it still, to this day, “Hollywood’s Great Secret Society.”

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter With the upcoming arrival of spring comes the annual tradition of “spring cleaning”. During this time of the year many homeowners take on the task of organizing garages, cleaning out attics, and clearing off decks and patios to prepare for another wonderful Vista summer. While clearing out the closets or garage, think about items that the family no longer needs or wants. Consider diverting as much of these discarded items out of the local landfill by donating them to charity. Cleaning out the garage? If you have old and broken electronics, old paint or oil cans, used batteries, or other

toxic products that are not suitable for donation, do not throw them away with your regular trash. Instead, take them to the Vista Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility. Residents should drop off household hazardous waste at the collection facility located at 1145 E. Taylor Street (open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, except holidays). While there is no fee to Vista residents, proof of residency is required. When tackling spring cleaning this year, please think twice about helping others and helping the environment. Diverting solid wastes from landfills and properly disposing of household hazardous wastes is good for the whole community.
Communicating With Our Elected Officials. Join us here every week! Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss
The City of Oceanside invites you to a special performance entitled “Jazz and the African American Vocal Artist” on Saturday, February 9, at 3:30 p.m., in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms at 330 North Coast Highway in downtown Oceanside.
The performance by Michael Paul Smith and friends will include a vocal jazz concert with narrative. The concert will highlight pillars of the vocal jazz world and their significance in the African American experience and socially unifying efforts.
Michael Paul Smith began his music career at a young age, performing at a noted Los Angeles church, where he became a featured soloist and honed his unique vocal style. He studied music at Cal State Northridge and at UCLA. He has traveled throughout the world, performing opera, gospel, sacred music, Negro Spirituals, jazz and musical theater. Recently, Michael released a 6th CD of jazz and love songs. This event kicks off Black History Month, inspiring the community to seek a greater understanding of past times and helping connect the dots to reveal a clearer picture of African American cultural and musical history.

Why are Smart Phone and PC sales in decline?
We are taking a break in our series on the Generation Gap to talk about PC performance this week.
Both PC and smart phone technology “hit the wall” several years ago. PC performance plateaued with Windows 7 and the fast multi-core CPUs in 2010. Smart phones technology peaked in 2015 with the merger of new fast processors and 4G Internet access speed. By “hitting the wall” we mean that, for the great majority of applications, subsequent technology has offered negligible beneficial impact. Cell phones are not getting faster and old phones run the same applications as new ones. Minor changes in screen

Middle school students get to take part in the 2019 Tech Time Challenge. This program aims to make math and science fun by giving students a real-life STEM problem to solve. Customized by grade level to reflect school curriculum, students have three weeks to craft a creative solution to that specific problem in the form of an essay or marketing presentation. At the end of the three-week program, a schoolwide assembly is held at each site to showcase participants’ STEM solutions. Students with the most innovative solutions have a chance to win prizes, and the top-solution in each grade at each middle school wins an Apple iPad. SEMI High Tech U is an internationally acclaimed career exploration program for Carlsbad’s high school students. This three-day intensive workshop takes place at the Nordson ASYMTEK facility and on campus at UCSD and gives students a chance to work with Nordson employees through modules relating to chemistry, biology, engineering and design. They also get to create resumes and participate in mock interviews with industry professionals.
"The kids loved it, our employees loved it – it was a win-win all around," said Sara Vaz, Program Officer at Nordson. "The kids really got to see how STEM skills translate into the real-world work environment. Especially since some younger Nordson engineers taught modules, so the students got to see someone close to their age working in a real job and real environment." Applications are now being accepted for SEMI High Tech U, held on February 26– 28, at https://www.carlsbaded.org/semi-
In the first 30 years of the PC age (1980-2010), PC sales were driven by “Moore’s Law.” Intel’s Gordon Moore predicted that technology would double the power of computer CPUs every 20 months. We hit the wall in 2010, partly because the laws of physics made it difficult to maintain Moore’s doubling pace but mainly because the demand for ever higher CPU speeds came to a screeching halt. The most capable PC CPU available in 2010 was an i7-980X with a Passmark performance benchmark of 9,000. Today’s leader, the Intel i9-9880X costs $2000 and registers 29,000 Passmark Benchmarks. While it is three times more powerful than the X780, had we followed “Moore’s Law” and doubled CPU speed every 20 months as we did between 1980 and 2010, today’s CPU would benchmark at 288,000 or 32 times as fast as the nine year old i7-980x. That didn’t happen because there is no mass market for that kind of speed.
ultra gaming, solids modeling, crypto currency mining, video editing and network servers, for most business and home applications the average PC from 2010 has all the speed and storage they can use. Doubling the speed of these PCs does not improve performance.
I’m on my office PC twenty five hours a week running our business with a variety of off line and Internet applications. We built my PC in 2011 with an AMD Athlon II X2 250 CPU. Its Passmark benchmarks is 1400 with 4.0 GB of RAM. The slowest refurb we have for sale is nearly twice as powerful as my PC. On our shelf my PC would be priced
at under $200. There is one thing that allows my PC to out-perform newer, faster PCs. My “C” drive is an SSD (solid state drive). It costs about $60, the same as a new 1.0 terabyte 7200 RPM HDD (hard disc drive). The SSD has no moving parts so it is much faster than a spinning HDD that must traverse back and forth over a spinning disc to store and retrieve data. The HDD is the major choke point for PC performance. Changing to a SSD can be a very cost effective way to ad performance to your PC and years to its life. Bring your PC in for a free performance evaluation. Back to the Generations Gap next week.
The 1907 Model T Ford’s top speed was 45 MPH. The 1927 Model A was 50% faster at 67 MPH. If automobile technology allowed a 50% increase in top speed every 20 years, the 2007 Ford should top out at 329MPH. Ford no doubt could build a family car that could go that fast, but there is no mass market for that kind of speed. It is the same with PC technology. While there are some applications that do benefit from the power and speed of current technology, i.e.

If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Other California statues and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a peson interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250.
