Miramar National Cemetery has been described as beautiful and peaceful. True. It also is the sacred final resting place for many of America’s heroes – veterans of all branches of service – some killed in action, who defended American interests world-wide. On a sunny California day, the Avenue of Flags entrance to Miramar is The Paper - 760.747.7119

impressive as fifty Stars and Stripes, each representing a state in our Union, billow and snap in the wind. At night, in the golden glow of lights, these flags signify the reverence, quietude and reflection of this hallowed ground.
The somber elegance of a day visit is heightened by white gravestones marching across green grass to the far horizon,
guarded by “The Liberation Monument” a 15-foot-tall, 7ton bronze statue, that depicts a prisoner of war emerging from captivity. More grandeur issues from the 30-foot-tall Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillion that honors the memory of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in repelling enemy forces from Outpost Harry, in June 1953 during the Korean War. The tower features a 250-pound
bronze bell which tolls the time on the hour and the Carillion plays Westminster chimes on the half-hour, and “Taps” at 5:30 p.m. when Miramar closes for the day. America tends to forget our military once they march off to war, evidently feeling we’re so invincible that none will be killed, wounded or captured. As General Patton said, the aim of the American soldier is not to die for your country but to cause some

other mother’s son to die for his. Thus, such nations as France, Germany, Russia and Ireland preceded the US by many years in establishing burial grounds for their military deceased.
In his Second Inaugural Address on March 4th, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln spoke of the need “To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan.” On July 17, 1862, during the American Civil War, Congress authorized the Office of The President to purchase “cemetery grounds” to be used “for soldiers who shall have died in the service of the country.” Fourteen cemeteries were established that year. That there was a need for these fields soon became obvious. Six years after the end of the Civil War, over 100,000 Union Army veterans had been buried in 73 national cemeteries - most in the southeast United States near battle fields and camp grounds of America’s most costly war. In 1873, by Congressional decree, all hon-

Polk County Florida Sheriff - "You kill a policeman it means no arrest...no Miranda rights... no negotiations...nothing but as many bullets as we can shoot into you...PERIOD."
POLK COUNTY FLORIDA SHERIFF, GRADY JUDD An illegal alien in Polk County, Florida, who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop, ended up"executing" the deputy who stopped him. The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range. Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed. The murderer was found hiding in a wooded area. As soon as he took a shot at the SWAT team, officers opened fire on him. They hit the guy 68 times. Naturally, the
orably discharged veterans with two years-service time, were eligible for burial at these sites. A National Cemetery Administration was established to administer and maintain the existing grounds and select, add and establish new ones as needed. Miramar Dedicated
During both the Hoover and Roosevelt Administrations of the 1930’s, new locations were established to serve Veterans living in major metropolitan areas - New York, Baltimore, Minneapolis, San Francisco, San Antonio and San Diego. Yet, with an estimated 200,000 veterans, it was not until January 30, 2010, that Miramar National Cemetery was formally dedicated by President Barack Obama. The facility occupies 313 acres granted to the VA via a land-use agreement with the U.S. Marine Corps. Today, an average of 70 veteran or veteran-related burials are conducted here monthly. (Family members of qualified veterans – wives, husbands and children – may be interred here as well.)
liberal media went nuts and asked why they had to shoot the poor, undocumented killer 68 times. Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel: "Because that's all the ammunition we had."
The Coroner crafted his own quote and ruled that the illegal alien died of natural causes. When asked by a reporter how that could be, since there were 68 bullet wounds in his body, he simply replied: "When you are shot 68 times you are naturally gonna die.” Religious Diplomacy
The Pope met with his Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel. “Your Holiness," said one of his Cardinals, “Mr. Netanyahu wants to challenge you to a game of golf to show the friendship and ecumenical spirit shared by the Jewish and Catholic faiths." The Pope thought this was a good idea, but he had never held a golf club in his hand. “Don’t we have a Cardinal to represent me?" he asked.
"None that plays very well," a Cardinal replied. "But, there’s a man named Jack Nicklaus, an American golfer who is a devout Catholic. We can offer to make him a Cardinal. Then ask him to play Mr. Netanyahu as your personal

After a number of transactions and maneuvers, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) now administers 131 cemeteries in 39 states and Puerto Rico; the National Park Service maintains 14 and the Department of Army maintains 2 – Arlington National Cemetery and United States Soldiers and Airmen’s Home in our nation’s capitol. The newest national cemetery is Washington Crossing in Pennsylvania, which opened in 2010. A new facility will soon be added in Fargo, North Dakota. Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made. Of course, Nicklaus was honored and agreed to play.
The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of the result. “I have some good news and some bad news, your Holiness, " said Nicklaus. “Tell me the good news first, Cardinal Nicklaus," said the Pope.
“Well, your Holiness, I don’t like to brag, but even though I’ve played some pretty terrific rounds of golf in my life, this was the best I have ever played, by far. I must have been inspired from above. My drives were long and true, my irons were accurate and purposeful, and my putting was perfect. With all due respect, my play was truly miraculous."
“There’s bad news?" asked the Pope. “Yes, I lost by three strokes to Rabbi Tiger Woods." The Professor

veteran, with one exception – the identifying information on their tombstone is etched in gold. Miramar has only one soldier who has earned America’s highest military honor: Sergeant Charles Schroeter, U.S. Army, Jul 4 1839 – Jan 12 1921, American Indian Campaigns.
One of the most visited graves at Miramar is that of “The Colonel,” Jerry Coleman, longtime radio voice and manager of the San Diego Padres, second baseman for the World Series Champion New York Yankees, who served in both WWII and Korea, as a Marine fighter pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Metal. (He lies in Section 3, Grave 166, three rows down from Sgt. Schroeter.) Memorial Plaza

with the tribe’s chief and his wife and they all live happily for some time. One day, the chief’s wife gives birth to… a white child! The word spreads and the entire tribe is in shock. The chief pulls the professor aside and says, “Look, you’re the only white man we’ve ever seen around here, and my wife just gave birth to a white child. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what happened!”
The professor replied, “No, chief. You’re mistaken. What you have here is a natural occurrence, what we in the civilized world call an albino! Look at that field over there. All the sheep are white except for one black one. Nature does this on occasion.” The chief was silent for a moment, then said, “Tell you what. You don’t say anything more about that sheep and I won’t say anything more about that white kid." And then the fight started . . .
One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift ... The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!” And that's how the fight started.....

Hello Readers: Well, it happened again! Last week we told you about 9 puppies that were in a taped up bag and left to die at the park in Escondido. Now we have another sad story! This time it was 2 severly neglected, malnourished, matted Terriers abandoned at Mountain View Park in Escondido. (See our Local News on page 4 for the complete story and photos.) Because of the critical condition of the dogs, this is a felony cruelty investigation by the Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in this case. I can't imagine how someone can do something this terrible! We need to find and prosecute them to the full extent of the law. Meeting/Events Calendar

Fighting in snow and ground so frozen that Marines had to use earth-moving equipment and explosives to dig fighting holes, and without the aid of artillery or air support, they made a deliberate retrograde movement - “Retreat hell, we’re advancing in another direction”- that became one of the most-storied exploits in Marine Corps lore, the Marines turned and fought their way down a narrow, vulnerable road through mountain passes and a bridged chasm until they reached US Navy transport ships waiting at the coast. These warriors climbed aboard with jeeps, weapons, ammo-carrying mules and mess gear intact, leaving not one Marine, dead or wounded, behind. Get It Your Way At Miramar
Miramar offers above ground or cremated burials, at no cost to the family, with the promise of perpetual care for the Veteran’s grave. In most above ground services, the casket is transferred from an ambulance to a horse-drawn caisson driven by a lady and her assistant, both dressed in a black uniform. The caisson carries the body and as many as 4 family members to the prepared grave site. As a recorded version of “Taps” plays, the casket is lowered mechanically into the grave. Often, interested parties follow in cars or other vehicles, standing near the caisson as a minister, family member or friend delivers a eulogy. After the ceremony those who rode in the caisson are returned to the Visitors Center.
A cremation service follows much the same routine, except the cremains – the ashes of the deceased – are carried by a family member or sometimes, a uniformed member of the branch of service the deceased served in. At the columbarium, a niche awaits. The urn is placed inside, the eulogy deliv-

But my patients really need me. I have to take care of them.” In addition to his thriving dental practice, he and his beautiful Lisa have undertaken a major remodeling/renovation of their home. He says they are nearing the finish line but as anyone who has ever done that task knows, something always keeps cropping up. Adding a touch here, a touch there . . . maybe the landscaping needs a little embellishment.
Between making his patient’s teeth beautiful and making his home beautiful, he sometimes meets himself coming and going - but he takes great pride in all that he does.
The smiles on his patient’s faces is a testimony to that. And the smile on good ol’ Dr. Hurt is also testimony to how happy he is, both as a wonderful dentist and proud homeowner.

He resigned from the Army to enter the oil industry in Pennsylvania, returning to active duty when the Civil War started. Following the war, he resigned to serve as U.S. Minister to Mexico. sides of Catalina Blvd. It was dedicated a national cemetery on December 6, 1932, but the history of Fort Rosecrans is the history of California in a nut shell. The first of the ten great forts in California to be constructed outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, it was built on the bay side of Point Loma just above the ruins of the earlier Spanish Fort Guijarros.
However, before the Fort was fully operational, the U.S. Government erected a lighthouse on the Point in 1854 and built a post-Civil War battery - a detachment of soldiers at a fortified location. In 1894, buildings were constructed after a detailed survey by the Corps of Engineers of Point Loma. Once housing and other necessities were in place, the fort was then occupied by soldiers. A Long-Time Cemetery
Fort Rosecrans was a burial ground before 1847 (the Mexican War), and an Army post cemetery in 1860 or 1861, depending on which date rings your chimes. Incidentally, the City of Escondido has a strong link to Fort Rosecrans – 18 ‘heroes’ of the Battle of San
Pasqual (Mule Hill), are buried there. “They fought a good fight,” says the inscription. A stone taken from the battle field and erected by San Diego Parlors and Native Sons and Daughters marks their eternal rest. Early on, many soldiers who died were buried without their name or identifying information for some bizarre reason. Thus, Rosecrans has a number of tombstones simply labelled “U.S. Soldier.” It is here that many who fought in the Civil War, the Spanish American War and World War I are buried. A Regular Visitation

"Yes”, she sighed,
"My Gosh!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" And then the fight started..
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels.
I said, "Dust."
My Wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.
She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 165 in about 2 seconds." I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started..... The Test
A man walks into a bar, notices a very large jar on the counter, and sees that it's filled to the brim with $10 bills. He guesses there must be at least ten thousand dollars in it. He approaches the bartender and asks, "What's with the money in the jar?" "Well..., you pay $10, and if you pass three tests, you get all the money in the jar and the keys to a brand new Lexus." The man certainly isn't going to pass this up, so he asks, "What are the three tests?" "You gotta pay first," says the bartender, "those are the rules."

Claus, with her curly white hair, round glasses and ready smile. Her daughter Diane, who barely remembers her father – she was four when he died – was with her. Her father served in the Navy; he took Jeanette for his wife when she was 22, before shipping out in June 1950. He was 24. Their union lasted 28 years before his death from cancer. “We visit 2 or 3 times a year,” Jeanette says, “always on his birthday. He’d have been eightyseven today.”
She shakes her head as if to clear away bad memories. “I know it’s silly, but when we come, I pack a picnic lunch with Braunschwieger sandwiches – his favorite - and a silly birthday card that I read. Diane usually recites one of her poems and we tell him all the family news like he can hear us. It was tough when I had to report the death of our two sons, but mostly we stick to the good stuff.” •••• Today, Fort Rosecrans is closed to new interments with the exception of Veterans or eligible family members in an existing gravesite. Fort Rosecrans is the final resting place of a number of wellknown individuals. One such Veteran is Willis Winter Bradley. A US Navy Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and later a US Congressman from California, he was cited, “For extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving on the U.S.S. Pittsburgh, at the time of an accidental explosion of ammunition on that vessel. On 23 July 1917, some saluting cartridge cases were being reloaded in the after casemate: through an accident, an explosion occurred.
Comdr. Bradley (then Lieutenant), who was about to enter the casemate, was blown back by the explosion and rendered momentarily unconscious, but while still dazed, he crawled into the casemate to extinguish burning materials in dangerous proximity to a considerable amount of gun powder, thus preventing further explosions sure to damage the ship and harm shipmates.” Heroism above and beyond that exhibited by most. Other Well-Known Veterans
Many well-known Veterans are interred at Fort Rosecrans:
• Laurence Stallings was a screenwriter with over two dozen writing credits, i.e. “What Price Glory." • General Holland “Howling Mad” Smith, USMC, commanded Fleet Marine Force in the Pacific during World War II and led the "island hopping" campaign in central Pacific. • Lieutenant General John Wilson "Iron Mike" O'Daniel, U.S. Army, Commanded the 3rd Infantry Division, the Rock of the Marne, during World War II, the first Allied unit into Berchtesgaden in May 1945. • Lt. Gen. Victor H. "Brute" Krulak, USMC, served as commanding general of Fleet Marine Force Pacific during the early years of the Vietnam War, having served in both the Korean War and World War II, where on the island of Bougainville, he was wounded during action but refused to be evacuated; for his bravery, he was awarded the Navy Cross. Later, he consulted with New Orleans boat builder Andrew Higgins on what would become the landing craft used during the invasions of Normandy, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1968 and worked as an executive and columnist for Copley newspapers. In 1984, Krulak penned First to Fight: An Inside View of the U.S. Marine Corps, which is considered the definitive book on the history and culture of the Marine Corps. • Major General Joseph H. Human Trafficking in CA
Last month I introduced House Resolution 7 (HR 7), which is jointly authored with Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes (D – San Bernardino). HR 7 declares January Human Trafficking Awareness Month in California, part of a nationwide effort to combat this growing menace. A form of modern slavery, human trafficking has grown 842% in the United States since 2007. Unfortunately California and Nevada have become the primary location for human trafficking in the western United States. Worldwide, it is a $150 billion per year industry, with 40.3 million victims -- 25% are children, and 75% women and girls.
Human trafficking is a growing threat throughout this region. Riverside County is considered a human trafficking “artery” from Mexico and South America to Los Angeles. San Diego has been identified by the FBI as a “High Intensity Child Prostitution Area,” on a list of the top 13 US cities for child prostitution. There are at least 3,000 trafficking victims each year in San Diego County, and the actual numbers may be much higher. Victims, with an average entry age of 16, are frequently trafficked for three years before being discov-

So, after thinking it over a while, the man gives the bartender $10 which he stuffs into the jar. "Okay," says the bartender, "here's what you need to do:
First - You have to drink a whole quart of tequila, in 60 seconds or less, and you can't make a face while doing it." "Second - There's a pit bull chained in the back with a bad tooth. You have to remove that tooth with your bare hands." "Third - There's a 90-year old lady upstairs who's never had sex. You have to take care of that problem."
The man is stunned! "I know I paid my $10 -- but I'm not an idiot! I won't do it! You'd have to be nuts to drink a quart of tequila and then do all those other things!"
"Your call," says the bartender, "but, your money stays where it is." As time goes on, the man has a few more drinks and finally says, "Where's the damn tequila?!"
He grabs the bottle with both hands and drinks it as fast as he can. Tears stream down both cheeks -- but he doesn't make a face -- and he drinks it in 58 seconds!
Next, he staggers out the back door
ered. Street gangs are heavily involved, and prostitution has become the main source of income for some gangs. To help combat this repugnant criminal industry, the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (RCAHT) recently received federal grants totaling $1.4 million to expand the Task Forces’ victim service and outreach efforts. In San Diego County, new programs have been launched aimed at educating students throughout the county about the dangers of Human-Trafficking under a newly established San Diego Trafficking Prevention Collective.
HR 7 is just a small part of this ongoing battle. With heightened law enforcement, increased awareness, education and vigilance, we can rein in human trafficking and hopefully, prevent more shattered lives. For my birthday this year, my wife purchased a week of personal training at the local health club Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football player 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Kat, who identified herself as a 30-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress. MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Kat waiting for me. She is something of a Greek goddess-- with blond hair, dancing eyes, and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!! Kat gave me a tour and showed me the machines... I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her zumba class after my workout today. Very inspiring! Kat was encouraging as I
did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Kat made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then she put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Her rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT! It's a whole new life for me. WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot. Kat was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members.. Her voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Kat put me on the stair monster. Why would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Kat told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. She said some other crap too. THURSDAY:
Butt hole was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late-- it took me that long to tie my shoes. She took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. She sent some skinny bastard to find me. Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine-- which I sank.
In 1988, I was invited by the Canadian Tourist Bureau to visit the Yukon Territory to do travel articles in and around the cities of Whitehorse and Dawson City. On King! On You Huskies!
During the thirties, forties and fifties radio was the chief source of entertainment for families. During the daytime, housewives listened to “Stella Dallas,” “Lorenzo Jones,” One Man’s Family, and many more. In the evening we listened to popular programs such as “Bob Hope,” “Jack Benny,” “The Great Gildersleeve,” “Fibber McGee and Molly,” along with Lux Radio Theater,” “Dragnet,” among the many. But after school hours in the late afternoon and early evening it was programs for kids such as “The Lone Ranger,” “Straight Arrow,” “Sky King,” “The Shadow,” and, of course, “Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.” Many of those old radio favorites became Saturday morning TV fare during the fifties. “On King … on you huskies!” will be remembered as the opening for “Sergeant Preston,” the famed Royal Canadian Mountie along with his trusty canine companion, King, keeping the peace and pursuing justice in the Yukon Territory

I immediately thought of Dick and contacted him to tell about my Canadian assignment. He had never been to the Yukon, but I convinced him to give me some old publicity photos with him in RCMP uniform posing with his trusty Yukon King. Dick dutifully autographed several of the photos, which I took with me. I presented an autographed photo to the mayor of Dawson City and the rest to the tourism bureaus in Whitehorse and Dawson City. That small far-north city on the Yukon River was prominently featured in most of the radio and TV episodes. Those of us in our seventies and eighties will remember that half-hour adventure series, which was shot in color in the mountains of Colorado and on a Hollywood set, which was draped in fake snow at a time when most viewers still had black-and-white televisions. It became a popular, snowbound version of the Saturday morning sagebrush sagas that dominated the era's airwaves.
In his later years, Dick developed Alzheimer’s Disease. He died Jan. 11, 2003, at the age of 89, in an assisted living home in Oceanside. He’ll always will be remembered as that crimefighting frontiersman of the Yukon. SCAG SEZ -Politicians doublecross any bridge they come to. – Cecil Scaglione, Mature Life Features
FRIDAY:
I hate that jackass Kat more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic, aerobic instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it. Kat wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the darn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?
for decades During his retirement years Dick lived in Rancho Carlsbad. I was introduced to him by noted Hollywood actress Ruth Hussey, who was his neighbor.

1884. By 1913, Pendleton had risen to the rank of colonel and was the commanding officer at the Marine Barracks at Puget Sound, where he was on expeditionary duty much of the time. In mid-1914 after arriving in San Diego, Pendleton began to advocate for the establishment of a major Marine Corps installation in the area due to the location’s favorable weather and harbor. Retiring in 1924, then General Pendleton settled in nearby Coronado where he served as mayor. He died in February 1942. killing or wounding the majority of the crew. Two days later their remains were brought to the post cemetery and interred in an area known as Bennington Plot. Their deaths are commemorated by a tall granite obelisk dedicated on Jan 7, 1908. Other monuments of note are the Ommaney Bay CVE-79 etched granite, a memorial to the men lost in action when that ship was bombed in January 1945. The granite USS Gambier Bay monument was erected in memory of the men who lost their lives during the 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf (Philippines) and in subsequent battles throughout the Pacific.
The Battle of Leyte Gulf was a pivotal victory for America during WWII. Many ships were key in this fight to drive the Japanese invaders from the Philippines, but three battle ships, USS Hoel, USS Johnston, and USS Samuel B. Roberts, bore the heaviest load. Their men and their deaths are remembered by a large granite memorial on the hill beneath the Administration Building across Catalina Boulevard.
This Is Hallowed Ground
Our National Cemeteries are hallowed ground. They commemorate those who fought and often died to persevere the American way of life. Words often fail us when describing these sights. No matter how we search for the proper phrase or just right description, we come up short, unable to speak for those who are interred for eternity in these places of terrible beauty. Perhaps a poet can help us in this task. The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak Archibald MacLeish
The young dead soldiers do not speak. Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses: who has not heard them?
They have a silence that speaks for them at night and when the clock counts. They say: We were young. We have died. Remember us.

In 1992 he arrived in San Diego and started his own business in the computer industry. In 1998 he discovered his passion; helping individuals make smart financial decisions – and joined A.G. Edwards as a full service Financial Consultant. The first part of Tony Krvaric’s American Dream came true in May of 2003 when he was naturalized as

Pastor Hal Seed New Song Community Church - Oceanside Does God Care?
One of life’s most frequently asked questions is, “Does God Care”? Everybody I know asks it from time to time (atheists included).
Things don’t always go the way we hope they will. A promise is broken. A relationship ends. A job is lost. Financial pressures take us to a breaking point. At any given moment, we can face a dozen situations that make us wonder, “Does God care?” As The Paper’s Pastor, I want to give a few verses of hope to those of you who depend on Jesus. Here’s what He said: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) “I am with you always…” (Matthew 28:20) “I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” (Isaiah 49:16)
“Those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles.” (Isaiah 40:31)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29) Time after time God wrote words of encouragement to discouraged people throughout the 1,189 chapters of His book. He is there for you.
You are dearly loved by a God who came to earth to demonstrate how much He cares by living as one of us, then dying a horrible death in payment of our wrong-doings (so we wouldn’t have to pay for them ourselves). Our little two-pound brains can’t always comprehend everything that’s going on around us – nor inside us, for that matter. That’s when we have to do what God said in Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” God bless you!

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido!
This week at our Council meeting we decided to start the process to change the meeting start time to 6PM. We had two council members for it and two against it and I was the swing vote. I decided to try it although there wasn’t much community feedback at the meeting, not historical data to compare the change with. I know the time hurts one group and helps another attend, so maybe there is no right answer. But the intent is to give the people who want to attend a chance to attend the

“A frustrating lack of communication between people of different age groups.” Last month we started this series on the “generations gap” between those over 53 years old (Boomers and the Silent Generation) and those under 37 of age (Millennials and the Z generation). The “Tweeners” (37-53) seemed to be neither fish nor fowl so they made a convenient separation between these two very different demographics. We surveyed the widely held negative stereotypes held by each age group regarding the other and sought to understand their origin.
We identified three basic “gaps.” The traditional eye rolling and head shaking “gap” between generations that’s been

What to Do if you Find a Stray Kitten – As Kitten Season approaches this spring, shelters all over the country are preparing for an influx of young kittens and members of the public are more likely to come across stray kittens. The San Diego Humane Society recommends the following tips if you find stray kittens. 1. Watch to assess whether the kittens are sick or injured. If so, take them to a veterinary clinic immediately. 2. Wait to see if mom comes back. If she does not return within six hours, it’s time to intervene. Evaluate the appropriate next steps. 3. Are you willing to take full responsibility for the kittens? If not, bring them to your local shelter. The San Diego Humane Society has held classes to teach the basics of kitten care, how to become a foster volunteer and more. For more information, contact Dariel Walker at 619.250.6801 or dwalker@sdhumane.org. The Humane Society has campuses located in Escondido, Oceanside, and San Diego. For more info, visit sdhumane.org.
Prior to the twentieth century the slow pace of technology meant that there were few differences in the ways older and younger generations lived their day to day lives. The older generation taught the younger generation life skills. Fads and fashion in dress and music were of minor consequence. Impetuous youth and old fogies each played out their roles in relative harmony. Fast forward to the 20th century where evolving technology created radically different cultures among generations. Working parents, urbanization, telephones, radio, television and political activist teachers and pop culture icons began to diminish the influence of parents and elders. Then came computers, gaming, the Internet and social media to finish the job. Our children and grand children were scarcely exposed to our values. Their values were shaped through exposure to their very different environment. Their perception of patriotism, morality and ethics are often quite different or even counter to those commonly held by the older generation.
unites them is their eagerness to use government to create and enforce laws targeted to repair the social injustice they see. The SJW wants government to police behavior and punish those who deviate. Truth, ethics and objectivity suffer in the SJW’s fervor to right the perceived social injustice. Nothing else is important. The end justifies any means, even if it involves trampling the rights of others. The leadership of the Democrat party has been quick to incorporate this highly amorphous and emotional movement as a tool for political advantage but it has not been easy. To accommodate the passion and laser focus of the SJWs the Democrat leaders have been forced to provide lip service to “identity politics”, to demonize political opposition and to fashion agenda oriented spins on truth, history and even their past actions. Some of their more mature leaders squirm uncomfortably with the positions they
This learning environment led to the creation of the most visible and politically significant symbol of the younger generation. “The Social Justice Warrior.” A SJW is passionate about some single issue. It may be animals, women, race, me too, ethnic, LBGT, guns, male dominance, corporations, children, environment, climate change, the list goes on and on. What

San Diego Humane Society in Search of Veterinary Leaders - The San Diego Humane Society has experienced substantial growth in the past six months. In addition to providing animal services in six additional cities, and doubling the number of companion animals in need of our care from 20 to 40,000, we also opened California’s first Center for Shelter Medicine. Not only is this new hospital vital to treat these animals, it also represents the future of shelter medicine. This beautiful new facility will serve as a teaching hospital to care for the tens of thousands of homeless, injured or neglected animals entering San Diego shelters while advancing the field of shelter medicine nationally. To support San Diego Humane Society’s continued growth and excellence, we’re looking to fill several leadership positions on our medical team, including a Chief Medical Officer, Director of the Center for Shelter Medicine, Director of Veterinary Education and a Hospital Director for our San Diego Campus.
These positions are instrumental in molding the vision, direction and leadership of San Diego Humane Society’s shelter medicine program. They also offer a unique opportunity for veterinary professionals to shape the future of shelter medicine, which has only been recognized by the AVMA as a specialty field since 2014. Shelter medicine aims to elevate and promote a better quality of life for shelter animals and increase the consistency of care across the U.S. But there’s another side to this emerging practice, and that is the number of animals who don’t receive veterinary care even though they have homes. More than 80 percent of pets in underserved communities never see a vet. In addition, many of the animals entering shelters arrive with little to no medical history and may even be victims of neglect or cruelty. All of this makes the population of animals in shelters more challenging – and all the more rewarding – to treat. With the opening of our new Center for Shelter Medicine, we have excellent opportunities for veterinary professionals to: Work in a world-class facility. Influence the emerging field of shelter medicine. Shape the shelter veterinarians of tomorrow. Take care of our region’s homeless pets. Help our community stay at zero euthanasia of healthy/treatable animals. Lead a robust, well supported team of veterinary professionals. And, ultimately, change the world.
Experience in shelter medicine isn’t necessary for this rare opportunity to work in an innovative, new hospital among a supportive and robust medical team. We’re looking for candidates who will support our mission to Inspire Compassion and help us change the world. Please share this message to help us find the very best can-

Many in the older generation see the excesses of Orwell’s “1984” in the speech and behavior modifications demanded by the loudest, most strident voices in politics. The older generation cannot understand why they are despised and reviled as evil by the generation of their children and grandchildren because they happen to be white, straight, male, Republican, Christian or some other targeted identity. Times are good we are prosperous and at peace yet our nation hasn’t been as divided since the Civil War Rodney King famously said “Can’t we all just get along?” We don’t think that is going to happen for a while Rodney, wish we had the answers but it looks like it’s going to take a lot of time and effort.
