Over 33-million Americans have experienced what is known as “outof-body experiences” (or OBE), according to Medical News Today. That’s over 10% of the entire population of the United States, a significant portion of people which makes it increasingly difficult for science to ignore, or relegate OBE to over-active imaginations.
In short, OBE is a phenomenon that refuses to go away.

EVENT OR EXPERIENCE? Outof-body experiences (OBE) is a recognized phenomenon during which a person experiences leaving their physical body and often perceiving the physical world around them – sometimes seeing themselves below from a different angle or height. OBE is an unexplained phenomenon that has intrigued and fascinated humanity for centuries, permeating not only the scientific community but also inspiring folklore, mythology, as well as spiritual and religious beliefs. WHAT CAN TRIGGER OR
CAUSE OBE? One particular form of OBE is called Near Death Experience or NDE. As its name implies, NDE may be triggered when an individual experiences a near-death event (which many combat soldiers have recorded), as well as from cardiac arrest survivors, to cite just two examples. NDE can also trigger an out-ofbody experience when a patient “flat-lines” on the operating table or is momentarily considered to be “brain dead.” Often the patient

alleges to be floating above and watching their own operation below. Many near-death experiences are difficult to dismiss, especially when the patient is able to recall detailed descriptions of their own operation as they view themselves unconscious and motionless below.
Equally difficult to explain by current scientific criteria, is when a patient on the operating table recalls floating out into the hallway and later gives precise clothing

descriptions (including styles and colors) of specific relatives just arriving in the Waiting Room.
Contrary to popular belief, neardeath experiences do NOT always involve experiencing or seeing a “bright light at the end of a tunnel.” BRAIN-DEAD PATIENT HAS OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE. One of the most celebrated and scientifically documented cases of OBE involves famous singer-songwriter Pam Reynolds, who has recorded music with the greatest names in pop music, including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and REM. Something mysterious and shocking suddenly happened on a very hot August day back in 1991.
As Reynolds recalls in her very own words: “I was in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my husband. We were promoting a new record. And I inexplicably forgot how to talk!” In addition to losing her ability to speak, and having dizzy spells, she also found it difficult to move certain parts of her body. An MRI revealed an aneurysm on her brain stem.
It was already leaking, making it a ticking time bomb!
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! Poor Brad
Brad lived in California. He was a lifelong environmentalist. He was sick of the world; of Covid-19, Brexit, Russian belligerence, global warming, racial tensions, and the rest of the disturbing stories that occupy media headlines.
Brad drove his car into his garage and sealed every doorway and window. He got back into his car, selected his favorite music and started the car.
Four days later, a worried neighbor peered through his garage window and saw him in the car. She notified the emergency services and they broke in, pulling Brad from the car. A little sip of water and, surprisingly, he was in perfect condition .

Her best hope was brain surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona. The surgeon, Dr. Robert Spetzler said: “The aneurysm was very large, which meant the risk of rupture was also very high.” During the delicate procedure, Pam Reynolds’ body temperature was lowered to 60-degrees Fahrenheit. As the blood commenced draining from her head, her breathing and heartbeat suddenly stopped.
Her eyes were closed with tape, and small ear plugs with speakers were placed in her ears, making it impossible for her to hear or see. The 35-year-old Reynolds was under close medical monitoring during the entire operation. During a portion of the operation, she had no brain-activity. And no blood flowing in her brain, which rendered her, “clinically dead.” Then, something most unexpected and scientifically unexplainable happened at the operating table!
The famous music songwriter, Pam Reynolds Lowery from Atlanta, Georgia, would suddenly make medical history!
She began to experience a neardeath experience, all while still under close medical monitoring during the entire operation, and with no blood flowing through her brain. . . but his Tesla had a dead battery.
Some important philosophical questions on life...
Why do supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front? Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke? Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage? EVER WONDER... Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed? Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavoring, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
As medically documented under the most strict of scientific conditions: “Reynolds later made several observations during the brain procedure which medical personnel later reported to be 100% accurate in every detail – and at a time when she was clinically dead.”
Reynolds remembers how the first stage of her OBE slowly began as the surgery progressed, and as the surgeons began drilling into her skull. “I was lying there on the gurney minding my own business, seriously unconscious, when I started to hear a noise, which was the drilling into my skull to open it up,” Reynolds recalls.
As a musician, she remembers the drill sound she heard, and expressed the sound in her own musical vernacular: “It was a ‘D,’ and as the sound continued – and I don’t know how to explain this, other than to go ahead and just say it: I popped upand-out of the top of my head!” Her skull was now open. And she was now looking down at the operating table.
She says she could see 20 people around the table and hear what sounded like a dentist’s drill. From above, she looked at the instrument in the surgeon’s hand. “It was an odd-looking thing,” she would say later. “It looked like the Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food? Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff? Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? •••• RETIRED HUSBAND
After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to WalMart. Unfortunately, like most men; I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter, from the local WalMart: Dear Mrs. Harris:
Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion, in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior
handle on my electric toothbrush.”
Reynolds now sees the ‘Midas Rex’ bone saw which the surgeons used to cut open her head, and the drill bits, and even the case – which looked like the case where her father kept all his socket wrenches. Her eyes follow a surgeon, now moving to her left groin.
“I now hear a female voice say: ‘Her arteries are too small.’” And then I heard Dr. Spetzler answer her, “Use the other side.”
Reynolds’ body temperature had lowered now to 50 degrees, and she had completely flat-lined, and the surgeons observed the blood that had drained out of her head.
While she was clinically-dead, Reynolds was still experiencing her near-death experience and noticed a tunnel and bright light and was now floating away from the operating room. She would later recall chatting with her dead grandmother and uncle, both of whom escorted her back to the operating room. She was now back in the operating room and looking down upon herself, once more.
Strangely, she could hear music and even the lyrics of the popular song,

and have been forced to, ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:
1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. We don't have a Code 3. 5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6. August 14: Moved a, 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

Looking down at her bloodied form, she said later that her body looked like a train wreck, and she did not want to return to it. The surgeons frantically began efforts to restart her heart.
Her uncle pushed her back towards her motionless body.
“My uncle pushed me,” she says, laughing and remembering. “And when I hit the body, I opened my eyes.”
Reynolds’ precise and detailed accounts of her own surgery, the conversations, the surgical tools, and the precise movement of the 20-member surgical team astounded the physicians!
The stunned head neurosurgeon, Dr. Robert Spetzler, says her account matched each precise part of the procedure! Every detail was described, including medical directions, conversations, movement, and equipment used! “From a scientific perspective,” Dr. Spetzler confessed, “I have absolutely no explanation about how it could have happened.”

near-death experiences. He concurred on the fact sheet, the OBE was a true unexplained phenomenon.
According to the records, there were 20 doctors in the room. There was a conversation about the veins in her left leg. She was defibrillated. And Dr. Sabom retrieved a photo of the bone saw – and its shape looks very much like an electric toothbrush which the unconscious patient described, among many other things.
According to Dr. Sabom, “She (the patient Pam Reynolds) could not have heard it (the drill or any verbal conversations) because of what they did to her ears. In addition, both of her eyes were medically taped shut, so she couldn’t open her eyes and see what was going on. So her physical sensory perception was ‘off the table,’ during her surgery.” Scientifically speaking, it should have been medically impossible for her to hear or see any technical procedures as she described in perfect detail. Including medical conversations. There was one last, lingering item.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S “NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE.” Ernest Hemingway had graduated from High School and was itching to get involved in that overseas scuffle known as WWI. He had already tried to enlist in the U. S. Army at age 18 but was turned down because of poor vision in his left eye. So when he heard that the Red Cross was accepting volunteers as ambulance drivers for the Allied Forces – he jumped at the opportunity, abandoning his job with the Kansas City Star and sailed for Europe in May of 1918. Only a few weeks after arriving in Europe, he would experience a most terrifying near-death experience that would haunt him for the remainder of his life, up until his suicide.

The Paper Two Men Killed in Fatal Traffic Collilsion - Escondido
On 02-12-21 at approximately 11:19 p.m., an Escondido Police officer stopped a car near Mission Ave and Gamble St for a traffic violation. What the officer didn’t know at the time, is that the car was being driven by a 13 year-old girl from Vista who took her mom’s car without her knowing. The girl’s juvenile friend was a passenger in the car.
As the officer approached the car on foot to make contact with the driver, the girls fled in the vehicle. The girls drove east on Mission Ave and apparently tried to turn left onto north Ash St. They apparently lost control and their car slid into the planter on the east side of the road near a SDG&E transfer facility.
Once the police caught up to the car and discovered the crash, the girls were detained at the scene. Officers tragically discovered that two men who were sleeping in the bushes had been struck by the vehicle. One man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other man later died at the hospital. The police and the Medical Examiner’s office are still trying to identify the men, but they both were adults and believed to be homeless. The girls were arrested and later released to their parents.

On a side note, while officers were conducting traffic control duties for the collision investigation, a DUI driver struck a police car that was blocking the closed roadway. The police car had all of the emergency lights activated and was unoccupied. No one was injured and the driver was arrested for DUI. On July 8, 1918, while serving as an 18-year-old ambulance driver for the Italian Army, Hemingway also drove a mobile canteen and was distributing chocolate candy and cigarettes to Italian soldiers in the trenches near the front lines when an Austrian mortar shell suddenly landed just a few feet away -- and then exploded with a deafening sound and horrific vibration! The wicked explosion killed an Italian soldier outright, and blew the legs completely off another! Hemingway was knocked completely unconscious!
Hemingway would later describe his near-death experience while he lay vulnerable and motionless: “There was one of those big noises you sometimes hear at the front. I died then. I felt my soul or something coming right out of my body, like you’d pull a silk handkerchief out of a pocket by one corner. It flew around and then came back and went in again and I wasn’t dead anymore.”
Hemingway’s near-death experience never gave him complete peace for the rest of his life; from that moment onward he never slept in a completely darkened room with the lights off. In civilian life and for the remainder of his earthly years, he always kept at least one small light on at bedtime to prevent from being completely consumed in total darkness. Despite being momentarily left unconscious, fellow ambulance drivers, including Theodore Brumback, witnessed Ernest Hemingway regain consciousness and then proceed – on pure adrenalin and reflexes – to carry another wounded soldier back to the first aid station, before Hemingway was hit by machine gun fire in both legs!
With apparent shock initially blocking his pain, Hemingway hit the ground after his post traumatic heroics!
(Epilogue: Hemingway was hospitalized with over 200 pieces of shrapnel lodged in both legs. His full recovery at the Red Cross Hospital in Milan, Italy, took over half a year! At the hospital, Hemingway was awarded the Italian Silver Medal for Valor with the official Italian citation reading: "Gravely wounded by numerous pieces of shrapnel from an enemy shell, with an admirable spirit of brotherhood, before taking care of himself, he rendered generous assistance to the Italian soldiers more seriously wounded by the same explosion and did not allow himself to be carried elsewhere until after they had been evacuated."
But the near-death experience remained with Ernest Hemingway, as if his soul was forever scarred. Similar to elements of PTSD (post
Page 5 • • February 18, 2021
traumatic stress disorder).
He always repeated: “When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you . . . Then when you are badly wounded the first time, you lose that illusion and you know it can happen to you.” Hemingway forever felt that he could fully never run away from that NDE experience.
The out-of-body experience haunted him so much that in 1929, in his classic novel “A Farewell to Arms,” he drew on that near-death-experience when he wrote the words for his book’s wounded character, Frederick Henry: “I tried to breathe but my breath would not come and I felt myself rush bodily out of myself and-out and-out-andout and all the time bodily in the wind. I went out swiftly, all of myself, and I knew I was dead and that it had all been a mistake to think you just died. Then I floated, and instead of going on I felt myself slide back. I breathed and I was back.”
Ernest Hemingway’s near-death experience forever haunted him. Terrified him. And like a demon in the night, forever stalked him. Many famous individuals toyed with out-of-body experiences and attempted to achieve it, such as history’s greatest inventor, Thomas Edison, who tried to use OBE to solve scientific and theoretical problems. And world-famous artist, Salvador Dali, who wished to enhance his surreal paintings and imagery through OBE. Even famous astronomer Carl Sagan, who was intrigued and drawn towards it, like a moth to a flame -even wrote about it. Out-of-Body and Near-Death Experiences have been recorded for well over 200 hundred years and remains today as a serious study by worldwide scientists. It is also one of the most popular discussions among everyday people, around the globe today.

Help for Tenants and Landlords
The economic fallout from the pandemic has made it difficult for thousands of Californians to keep a roof over their heads. Early on, federal funding provided some assistance to renters and landlords alike, but many were unable to access that aid. More needed to be done.
That’s why I joined my colleagues to pass Senate Bill 91 (SB 91), bipartisan legislation that was signed into law by Governor Newsom. The bill, which became effective February 1st, provides assistance to qualified landlords and their tenants for up to 80 percent of unpaid rent that has accumulated since the pandemic began. It also extends the current eviction moratorium through March, subject to extensions that are likely to be approved by Congress.
Tenants most at-risk will be targeted, and landlords who agree to waive 20 percent of unpaid rent will become eligible for 80 percent reimbursements for unpaid rent that accrued between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021. $2.6 billion in federal funds will pay for the program, and additional federal funding will also help cover unpaid rent through June of this year.
For the past year, preventing evictions and homelessness for millions of California tenants has been imperative, but landlords were often left holding the bag. Many landlords rely on rents collected from tenants as their primary, perhaps only source of income. According to Debra Carlton, Executive Vice President of State Public Affairs for the California Apartment Association: “Getting dollars to landlords is imperative. Many landlords have not received rent in over a year, and some owners are on the brink of losing their homes.” SB 91 is not perfect, but it should help landlords and tenants as they try to survive the disastrous economic fallout from COVID-19. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

We are making progress!
San Diego County has administered over 500,000 vaccines and that number continues to climb. While we are limited on supply, San Diego County has the infrastructure ready for when we receive more vaccines. I know it may seem slow, but San Diego County is well ahead many others in the State, and we are ready for the next doses to arrive!
Also, Operation Collaboration (a collection of fire agencies) have been going out to the unincorporated areas and administering vaccines. I've seen their operation firsthand and want to thank them for all of their wonderful work! Progress is being made! Unfortunately, I was a disappointed in the outcome at our last Board meeting. Supervisor Anderson brough forward a Board letter calling for the prioritization of law enforcement officers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. I was happy to second the motion as I too believe that our law enforcement officers should be prioritized. Unfortunately, my three other colleagues disagreed, and law enforcement must wait until the next tier. The number one killer of law enforcement right now in the
United States is COVID-19. It’s disappointing, but I will keep pushing.
I also believe our teachers should be prioritized, so we can get our kids back in the classroom. While bureaucrats continue to play politics, our kids continue to suffer. These are my two biggest priorities and I will continue to push for them to receive their vaccines.

I do give someone credit, however, in that they replaced all the stop signs with yield signs, which makes a lot more sense, and does not impede traffic. 3rd thought. I must belatedly thank Mayor Mac for his actions a year ago, when I mentioned to him that it was totally STUPID to have all the "Golf Cart" signs around the golf course, when the course hadn't been used for golf for over 3 years, and you never saw a golf cart anyplace. Chicago’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre
One of America’s most infamous crimes was the 1929 St. Valentine's Day Massacre of seven members of Chicago's “North Side Gang.” The men were gathered at a Lincoln Park garage at 10:30 a.m., 2122 Clark Street, on the morning of Feb. 14th. They were lined up against a wall and shot by four unknown assailants, two of whom were dressed as police officers.
Editor’s Note: Mr. McCoy’s reference to “Mayor Mac” has reference to Escondido Mayor, Paul “Mac” McNamara - and yes, he does listen. And he responds to constituents as well as pesky newspaper editors and reporters. And a Bouquet for Tom Morrow!
So wonderful to see Mr. Tom Morrow's cover story titled "Guam, You Had to Be There" (Feb. 11, 2021 issue).
It was truly amazing for us readers to retrace his steps through the U. S. Navy, including his boot camp days right here in Point Loma, San Diego in 1958. And later when stationed in Guam, it was very, very emotional how he tried to save enough money to fly back home to Kansas for Christmas so that he could see his 7 month old baby son! Mr. Morrow's writing talents are truly a gift to all of us readers! We love his weekly column but we just can't get enough of Mr. Morrow, so it was an additional treat and bonus to see his cover story! Is there any way that you can have Mr. Morrow write more cover stories? I am so in love with Mr. Morrow's writing! And it's truly inspiring and patriotic to see that most, or all, of the writers for The Paper are U. S. veterans and defenders of our country! God bless The Paper! And God bless you, Mr. Lyle Davis for your U. S. military correspondence work overseas in Vietnam, covering the war front for us at home! Maria Elena Contreras-Hauser North San Diego County

The incident resulted from the struggle to control organized crime in the Chicago area during Prohibition between the Irish “North Siders,” headed by George "Bugs" Moran, and their Italian “South Side Gang” rivals led by Al Capone. The perpetrators have never been conclusively identified, but former members of the “Egan's Rats” gang working for Capone are suspected of having a role, as were Al Capone members of the Chicago Police Department who allegedly wanted revenge for the killing of a police officer's son.
The gang members were shot by the four men using t w o Thompson submachine guns. Two of the shooters were dressed as uniformed policemen, while the others wore suits, ties, overcoats, and hats. Witnesses saw the fake police leading the other men at gunpoint out of the garage after the shooting.
Later, real Chicago police officers arrived at the scene to find Frank Gusenberg still alive. He was taken to the hospital where police tried to question him. He had sustained 14 bullet wounds. Police asked him who did it, and he replied, "No one shot me." He died three hours later. It was widely assumed Capone person-
ally ordered the murders in an attempt to eliminate Moran. Capone's lookouts likely mistook one of Moran's men for Moran himself, probably Albert Weinshank, who was the same height and build. The physical similarity between the two men was enhanced by their dress that morning. Both happened to be wearing the same color overcoats and hats. Moran didn’t arrive at the garage until later. Witnesses outside the garage said they saw a Cadillac sedan pull up to a stop in front of the garage. Four men emerged and walked inside, two of them dressed in police uniform. The two fake police officers carried shotguns and entered the rear portion of the garage, where they found members of Moran's gang and collaborators. The fake policemen then ordered the men to line up against the wall. They signaled to the pair in civilian clothes who had accompanied them. Two of the killers opened fire with sub-machine guns, one with a 20-round box magazine and the other a 50-round drum. They were thorough, spraying their victims left and right, even continuing to fire after all seven had hit the floor. According to the coroner’s report, two final shotgun blasts all but obliterated the faces of John May and James Clark. Several factors contributed to the timing of the plan to kill Moran. Earlier in the year, The “North Side Gang” was complicit in the murders of Pasqualino "Patsy" Lolordo and Antonio "The Scourge" Lombardo. Both had been presidents of the Chicago Mafia, and close associates of Capone. Moran and Capone had been vying for control of the lucrative Chicago bootlegging trade. Moran also had been muscling in on a Capone-run dog track and a number of saloons in the local suburbs run by Capone, insisting they were in his (Moran’s) territory.
Police officials assumed the North Siders were lured to the garage with the promise of a stolen, cut-rate shipment of whiskey, supplied by Detroit's Purple Gang which was associated with Capone. The Gusenberg brothers were supposed to drive two empty trucks to Detroit that day to pick up two loads of stolen Canadian whiskey. All of the victims were dressed in their best clothes as was customary for the North Siders and other gangsters at the time. To give the appearance that everything was under control, the two men in civilian clothes came out with their hands up, prodded by the two uniformed policemen. Inside the garage, the only survivor in the warehouse was Frank Gusenberg and his dog. Despite 14 bullet wounds, Gusenberg was still conscious, but he died three hours later, refusing to utter a word about the identities of the killers. The Valentine's Day Massacre set off a public outcry which posed a problem for all mob bosses.
Within days, Capone received a summons to testify before a Chicago grand jury on charges of federal Prohibition violations, but he claimed to be too unwell to attend. It was common knowledge that Moran was hijacking Capone's Detroit-based liquor shipments, and police focused their attention on Detroit's predominantly Jewish

First, I discovered America. Then, I discovered The Paper!
Ever since I can remember I’ve had the burning desire to discover new places, new adventures. Because of this, I set out to discover a new country . . . and I was successful. I even ventured inland a great many miles where I discovered a place I called Minnesota. “This,” I thought, “would be a great place for Scandinavians.” So I headed back to Norway to recruit settlers. While I was gone, some clown named Columbus claimed he discovered America. Life ain’t fair. Except life also gives us The Paper. He's like an alchemist -- everything he touches is pure gold. A great writer doesn't make their skills look difficult like a gymnast, or complex like a chess master. Instead, a truly gifted writer mirrors life as it should be: translucent, pure, and organic. Mr. Morrow presents truth, love, and the human rite-of-passage, all in deceptively simple and effortless style in his cover story "Guam. You Had to Be There!" (in The Paper, 2/11/21). Beautifully told, with a dash of humor and a gentle tug at the heartstrings. He's the master.

The garage at 2122 N. Clark St. was demolished in 1967, and the site today is a parking lot for a nursing home. The bricks of the north wall against which the victims were shot were purchased by a Canadian businessman. For many years, they were displayed in various crime-related novelty displays. Many of them were later sold individually, and the remainder are now owned by the Mob Museum in Las Vegas.

With all that has gone in this past year . . . with the pandemic disrpupting everyone’s lives, I couldn’t help but take notice of how hard our restaurant personnel work.
We often dine at Charlie’s Family Restaurant and/or J&M Restaurant, in Escondido. Whether it’s outdoor dining on the patio or indoors, I marvel at how hard the servers work. I take not of Tina, Tracy, Chandra, Suzie and Bill . . .as well as the other server staff, and have to wonder how they make it through the day. Whenver you see them they are almost running, not walking, from point a to point be . . to ensure prompt and friendly service.
They have to be exhausted at the end of the day!
I could not do it. Don’t have the stamina, the patience, or the temperament. I’d be all tuckered out after the first hour of even trying to be a decent server. We are a relatively small news magazine (40,000 weekly readers throughout North County) and being fairly small we get to know our clients . . . not only as clients but as good friends.
We hate to see our good friends hurting and we know the pandemic has been sheer torture for them. Owners invest in tents for outside service, propane heaters, booth and table separators and sanitizing equipment and supplies for both outside and indoor service (when available) . . . and they keep valuable staff on duty even when business is slow. My friendly advice to you? PLEASE! Tip generously! These folks work very hard to please you. Let’s be generous with them.

Honk less, wave more!
In San Marcos, we believe horns are tools for safe driving, not aggressive driving. Traffic patterns shift, but kindness and courtesy can always be a staple on the road.
Take a peek at the City of San Marcos’ ‘Top 10 Manners that Matter on our Roads:’ 1. Make your drive pleasant, not a competition or a race. 2. Signal your turn. It’s not only safe, but also polite. 3. Tap your brakes only to slow down, not to frustrate another driver. 4. Red lights are not optional, and yellow lights don’t mean to speed up. 5. Traffic happens. Speeding and weaving are not the answer. 6. Braking and lane changing are best done in advance. 7. Tailgating is rude and unsafe. Avoid it at all times. 8. Shine your headlights proudly, but not in another driver’s eyes. 9. Let cars merge. Blocking takes more energy and won’t get you there faster. 10. Wave “thank you” when someone is kind to you on our roads!

As we used to say in the military, there is always someone who didn’t get the “word.” In civilian parlance it might be the person who didn’t get the “memo.” Well, the Old Palomar Hospital has opened as a COVID 19 Vaccine Super Station and while it has been reported in the media, I want to repeat the key points here just in case someone didn’t get the memo. Kudos go to the county, city and the hospital for making this happen.
Here are the key points - offers vaccines, testing and monoclonal anti-body therapy in one location. Open to the public and available by appointment only by going to Palomar Health’s website. Anti-body therapy is offered by physician referral only. It is the only site in San Diego County to have this approach and may be the only site in the nation. I read this somewhere and it really made a lot of sense. Everyday life IS a blessing.
I am thankful… • For the wife who says its hot dogs tonight because she is home with me and not out with someone else. • For the husband who is on the sofa being a couch potato because he is home with me and not out at the bars. • For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes because it means she is at home, Not on the streets. • For the taxes I pay because

it means I am employed. • For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat. • For my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine. • For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home. • For all the complaining I hear about the government because it means we have freedom of speech. • For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking, and I have been blessed with transportation. • For my huge heating bill because it means I am warm. • For the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means I can hear. • For the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear. • For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working. • For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means I am alive. Yes, I am thankful!

prominence during the “summer of love” period of the late 60s dissolved in a fog of drugs by the mid 1970s. The theme of “Everyday People” was that our differences should not be permitted to define and separate us and that mutual acceptance and respect is a key to civil harmony. That idea resonates more strongly today than ever.

“Different strokes for different folks.” Part one of two.
That line was made popular in the hit song “Everyday People” recorded by “Sly and The Family Stone” in 1968. We picked that line as the theme in our discussion on how different types and styles of PCs fit different user applications and lifestyles. In reading and then listening to the lyrics of the song we were fascinated by how much the song echoed the contemporary social disunity abetted by today’s political leaders in their quest for power. “Sly and The Family Stone” a San Francisco band that came to
You Just Never Know: The True Story of Sol Peska By Michele Ivy Davis
Tarpon Springs is a small town on the Gulf Coast of Florida. It was populated in the late 1800s by Greek immigrants who came to dive its blue waters for the abundant sponges. Even today you are more likely to hear Greek than English spoken in the colorful shops and quaint restaurants of the Sponge Docks, where the aroma of gyros and music of Greece fill the air. Solomon Peska, on the other hand, was from New York City, and spoke with a heavy Brooklyn accent. He was raised on a farm, served in
Now back to our discussion on PCs. Here at the Computer Factory we stock or build PCs that represent the four basic PC “form factors” or physical size and shape of computers. The basic PC “form Factors” are Desktop/Tower, Notebook, AIO (all-in one), and Micro. The two we’ll discuss today are the AOI and the Micro.
The AOI is a permanent workstation that incorporates all the components of the PC into the screen. The most popular size screens are in the 20 to 24 inch range. With wireless keyboard and mouse, the only cord is the power cord. It looks exactly like nothing more than a monitor but has all the bells and whistles The AIOs have webcams, speakers, WiFi and DVD reader/writer. The AIO options include size and type hard drive, amount of RAM and CPU speed. These AIO PCs have really become popular as home and business workstations because they take up very little space and eliminate messy cable and cord connections. We have several Dell, HP and Lenovo models (enterprise refurbs) with Windows 10 Professional in the $300 to $500 price range.
World War II, and was a hospital security guard before he retired to Tarpon Springs.
A widower with no children or close relatives, Sol lived frugally in a cluttered, one-bedroom, 1972 trailer in the aging Linger Longer Mobile Home Park. (Yes, that was its real name.) He owned an old car, but preferred to walk wherever he went.
One of the places he went to every day was the town’s library, where he was greeted by name as he made his way past the checkout desk to a table in the back. There he opened the library’s only copies of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and read them cover to cover. You might pass right by and never notice the old man sitting there in his well-worn clothes and favorite fishing hat. He was easily overlooked.
The Micro PC is a tiny version of its big brother, the desktop PC. Although they are very small, typically 7 X 7 X 1½ inches, they are a powerful desktop computer. The models we have in stock at present have Windows 10 Professional, fourth generation quad core i7 processors, 8GB RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, SSD (solid state drive), multiple video ports, speaker and mike jacks and excellent video cards. The micros are excellent as desktop PCs but also highly portable. They are ideal for moving between work places (like home and office). All you need is a monitor, keyboard and mouse at each location and you can take your work along with you in your pock-
et. Our “micros” are priced between $350 and $400.
You can buy “refurbs” on line and at some of the Big Box electronics retailers. You might even find one for a few bucks less than our price here at the Computer Factory. There is a huge difference between the relationship we have with our customers and the Internet and Big Box sales experience and that difference is more than worth any difference in price. Next week we will discuss Notebooks and desktop form factors and how they relate to “different strokes for different folks”
845 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos, CA.
According to Sol’s ritual, when the newspapers were finished he would lean back in a comfortable chair and doze until lunchtime, at which point he walked over to the Walton Avenue Community Center--run by Neighborly Senior Services (yes, also its real name)--to enjoy the food and socializing. Most afternoons he returned to the library to check out videos of his favorite movies—he was partial to classic musicals like Singin’ in the Rain and those from the 1950s and ‘60s. Sol didn’t talk about himself, but people said he was personable and had a good sense of humor, although he had few close friends. Then on Christmas Eve, 1996, Solomon Peska from New York died. He was 85.
His death might have passed unnoted except for the fact that Sol had a secret--one he’d held close the whole time he lived there.
Like an improbable twist in a novel, it seems that thrifty Sol had an estate worth close to $1.3 million. But that’s not the best part. With no family, Sol had divided his assets equally among the Tarpon Springs Friends of the Library, Neighborly Senior Services, and the United Way of Pinellas County. No longer did the library have to pare its list of desired books because of a tight city budget, Neighborly Senior Services was able to buy a van to take seniors on
outings and purchase equipment for its office, and the United Way could help homeless families find temporary housing and jobs. The agencies decided they wanted his gift to continue into the future, so they invested the bulk of the money and used the earnings for what they needed. One of the first things the Friends of the Library did was to add the Sol Peska Collection to its shelves. This was a compilation of over 70 movies that won Academy Awards for Best Picture, as well as 100 movies honored as the “best of all time” by the American Film Institute. Sol would have loved that. Today you’ll find his name everywhere in Tarpon Springs. The Sol Peska Film Festival each year features audience-pleaser films not shown in local theaters. The library’s Peska Business Center is a busy place that helps patrons find jobs, successfully start or run their own businesses, and research financial information. The Friends of the Library, through the Peska Fund, sent the Tarpon Springs High School choir to a national choir competition, and provided for the high school band to receive private lessons from members of the Florida Orchestra. The community benefitted in turn from

free concerts and students who then volunteered at the library.
And there were annual Sol Peska Student Film Contests where students wrote, shot, and edited videos; winners received cash prizes. On the front of the library there is a brass plaque with a picture of a man. It says: SOL PESKA 1911-1996 FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY IN MEMORY OF A TRUE FRIEND AND GENEROUS BENEFACTOR OF THE TARPON SPRINGS LIBRARY
The somewhat shabby, elderly man who used the newspapers at the library to research his stock portfolio left what multiplied into millions of dollars to the institutions that befriended him in his later years, and he, in turn, improved the lives of the citizens of Tarpon Springs. What you see on the outside may not be who that person really is. And that’s the true story of Sol Peska.
Chuckles Cont. from Page 7
'Kebab' was not even a word... never mind a food. Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold.
Prunes were medicinal and stewed.
Surprisingly Muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed. Pineapples came in chunks or were round with a hole in the middle, in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one. Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock. There were three things that we never ever had on/at our table in the fifties . . . elbows, hats and cell phones!
......and there was always two choices for each meal... "Take it" or Leave it"......
