It’s the early 1950s in southern California and a man identified as Dee Woolem, alias “The Daisy Kid,” is on a rampage. He is a thief, bank robber, and cold-blooded killer. His nonstop string of crimes always catch unsuspecting victims offguard. He is never caught, or brought to justice nor punished for his vigilante ways. In lawThe Paper - 760.747.7119

enforcement vernacular, he commits the “perfect crimes” and remained “at large” his entire lifetime. Woolem’s life is a contradiction in that – despite his seemingly despicable and lawless acts – he was a decent human being and earned an honest living and an honest paycheck. In truth, Dee Woolem was a
stuntman and “villain” at Knott’s Berry Farm theme park, where he was head robber of trains and stage coaches, all to the unexpected delight of millions of visitors. Also, in real life, he is one of the fastest gunslingers, an official 4-time winner of the National Fast Draw Championship, electronicallytimed at drawing his six-shooter from his holster at 12-hundreths of a second – as fast as the human eye can blink.
So unbelievable is his speed that it would earn him a guest spot on the nationally-popular “I’ve Got a Secret” television game show, hosted by Garry Moore.
On that very show, millions of television viewers witnessed the seemingly impossible: Dee Woolem drew, cocked, fired, and hit a designated target which, upon impact, stopped the clock at 12-hundreths of a

second, leaving the celebrity panel of Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz) thunderstruck and speechless. The sport of Fast Draw competitions was born from Hollywood’s mythical interpretations of the gunslingers from the Old West. And Dee Woolem was a living caricature of that bygone era, recreating deadly shootouts at Knott’s Berry Farm, and bringing the historical pages of school textbooks to life.
The early 1950s and ‘60s were the Golden Era of Western lore and legend. American television was saturated with the Old West to the level where many Western TV shows were running during the same years, overlapping each other: Roy Rogers “King of the Cowboys” television show ran 7 seasons (1951-57), along with The Adventures of Kit Carson (1951-55), Davy Crockett (1954-56), Death Valley Days (1952-70), The Gene Autry Show (1950-56), Hopalong

Only the British would tell this story: As Air Force One arrives at the Heathrow Airport, President Trump strides to a warm and dignified reception from the Queen. They are driven in a 1934 Bentley to the edge of central London, where they change to a magnificent 17th century carriage hitched to six white horses.
They continue on towards Buckingham Palace, waving to the thousands of cheering Britons; all is going well. Suddenly, the right rear horse lets out the most horrendous earth shattering fart ever heard in the British Empire. The smell is so atrocious that both passengers in the carriage must use handkerchiefs over their
Cassidy TV Show (1952-54), The Lone Ranger (1949-57), Bat Masterson (1958-61), Bonanza (1959-73), and so on.
Familiar words rooted in Old West vernacular conjured up entire narratives and imagery back then; simple words such as: The Cartwrights, Gabby Hayes, Jim Bowie, the Ponderosa, Matt Dillon, Kitty and Chester, and even a horse called “Trigger” would become familiar phraseology to millions of families across the length and breadth of America, reflecting a social DNA which united and defined us at the time, as Americans. The ‘50s and ‘60s were a time of unprecedented popularity of Western movies and TV shows. To the point where obscure and unknown actors, such as Clint Eastwood, would have his film career launched in the TV series “Rawhide,” and history’s longest running TV Western of all-time, “Gunsmoke,” would straddle an unbelievable 20year-reign (1955-75). Even Ronald Reagan became a familiar face as the host on television’s “Death Valley Days” (1964-5), sponsored by the ever-popular Borax Soap noses.
The fart shakes the coach, but the two Heads of State do their best to ignore the incident.
The Queen politely turns to President Trump and says: "Mr. President, please accept my deepest regrets...I am sure you understand there are some things that even a Queen cannot control." Trump, always trying to be "Presidential," responded: "Your Majesty, do not give the matter another thought. Until you mentioned it, I thought it was one of the horses." Gotta Luv Old People
A doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the doctor was looking through these his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills. "Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?"

were Westerns).
It just may surprise you that many of Hollywood’s fastest guns didn’t need the assistance of ‘special effects’ to look fast – they were, in real life, lightning quick on the draw.
These few were early “method actors” and therefore practiced their craft and honed their quick reflexes on and off the silver screen. Practicing and perfecting the craft of fast-draw became a hobby amongst Hollywood’s biggest celebrities and, in essence, many actors found this pursuit to be their catnip, of sorts.
Tethered to this immersion of interest in the Old West came a natural curiosity from a nation of people: How fast were the gunslingers of the American Old West? But of even greater public curiosity was -- just how truly fast were the Hollywood actors who portrayed them?
CANDIDATES FOR HOLLYWOOD’S FASTEST GUN. The list of Western actors who were genuinely fast on the draw read like a Who’s Who book of celebrities: Dan Duryea, Roy Rogers, Gary Cooper, Alan Ladd, James Arness (Matt Dillon), John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, James Garner (Maverick), and Hugh O’Brian (Wyatt Earp). The list of candidates seemed unending as others climbed on board: Richard Boone (Have Gun, Will Travel), Steve McQueen (Wanted Dead or Alive) and Glenn Ford (over half of Glenn Ford’s movies

The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student was hard put to think of seven advantages He wrote: 1) It is perfect formula for the child.

All of the above mentioned actors were, reputedly fast, apart from their make-believe Hollywood scripts.
Western films at the box office heightened public curiosity as to who truly was the quickest gun in Tinseltown. Alan Ladd was packing people in – west to east, north to south – to see his classic 1953 Western “Shane” in movie houses. And Glenn Ford was packing the balconies as people lined up outside theaters anxious to see his new 1956 film, “The Fastest Gun Alive.” The 1950s would see “High Noon” nominated for 7 movie Oscars (and winning 4), carrying the torch of previous Best Fastest Gun in Hollywood Cont. on Page 3

The “Queen of Christian Pop” Comes to Escondido – Contemporary Christian Music artist Amy Grant performs tonight, Thursday, February 21st at 7:30pm in the Concert Hall at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE). Conventional wisdom has it that Amy Grant put Contemporary Christian Music on the map, becoming the first CCM artist to have a platinum record, the first to hit No. 1 on the Pop charts with “Baby Baby”, and the first to perform at the GRAMMY Awards. Since then, Grant has been strumming her way through a 30-plus year adventure as a singer-songwriter, author, television host and speaker. Over the years, she has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, including three multiplatinum, six platinum, and four gold. Her chart performance has also been consistent throughout her career, boasting six No. 1 hits, 10 “Top 40” pop singles, 17 “Top 40” adult contemporary tracks and multiple

quickest, and audaciously threw the gauntlet down in the form of an open challenge to allcomers in Hollywood moviemaking. In a rare quote to United Press Hollywood writer, Aline Mosby, O’Brian boldly states: “I can draw in two-fifths of a second. I’ll challenge any of the other Western actors to a contest – Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Roy Rogers and anyone else.” (Daily Herald Newspaper, Ibid.)
It was well-known within Hollywood circles that Lee Van Cleef was faster than Clint Eastwood; James Garner quicker than James Arness, but Hugh O’Brian faster on the draw than Glenn Ford? Speculation and division of opinion ran high in La-La Land. In actual fact, Hugh O’Brian was no match for Glenn Ford, who truly lived up to his name in the movie he starred in (“The Fastest Gun Alive”).

Corky Smith, who spent a quartercentury as mayor, councilman of San Marcos, died on January 26th at the age of 88. Smith served on the San Marcos
City Council for more than a quarter-century, first as a council member for 14 years, starting in 1980, and then for three mayoral terms, until 2006. During that time, he was instrumental in transforming the city from a rural community to a prosperous center of business and education. San Marcos leaders who followed him credited Smith with lobbying to bring a California State University to the city, establishing the current civic center, and maintaining solid city finances.
Former City Manager Rick Gittings, who served under Smith for nearly all of his term in office, described him as a low-key civic leader who was dedicated to the city’s youngest and oldest residents. Smith was instrumental in negotiations to build Cal State San Marcos, as well as construction of the civic center, he said. Vista school board considering deep cuts to avoid deficit

I attended several top secret planning sessions and was invited to share a meal with them. A bit hungry from the travel and troubles encountered in my journey to this impoverished country, I readily accepted.

I just got back from Venezuela.
I was there on a special assignment to interview Interim President, Juan Guaido, who has been recognized by the USA and a number of other nations as the true president.
I was given a small bowl of bone broth. Tasty, but not terribly filling. I remember thinking as I downed the soup . . . bone broth? Where did the bones come from? Cattle? Dogs? Rats? Enemy POW's? One thinks these things when in a combat zone.
I immediately learned one of the hard facts of being in a combat zone. That appetizer, that lovely cup of bone broth, that was dinner. There was no more food.

such as eliminating vacant positions or those of personnel who will retire after this school year, redeploying some special assignment teachers and administrators, and shifting costs from the general fund to another funding pot. At a special board meeting last week, the board reviewed those recommendations and settled on $12 million, rejecting some items and earmarking others for further consideration. The tentative items include reducing some days from the school year, cutting 12 slots for elementary school substitutes to fill in during teacher collaboration “wheels,” and eliminating six positions for “personal learning teachers” for subjects such as STEM, (science, technology, engineering and math,) physical education and gardening.
Vista Unified is one of many San Diego school districts grappling with shortfalls. Most school districts in the county are projecting deficit spending for three years in a row, according to the San Diego County Office of Education, which monitors their finances. Districts can weather a single year of deficit spending by patching budget holes with reserve funds or one-time funding. But years of continued deficit spending can create long-term financial problems for the districts.
thing to eat. I was lucky to have had the sustenance of bone broth. We had explosions popping off around our location . . . occasional small arms fire. But morale seemed upbeat. I was scheduled for an interview with Interim President Guaido in about two hours time. Under heavy security, I would be moved to a new, more secure location, do the interview and then head back home to file my story. I guess I should point out at this point that when I say I just got back from Venezuela what I really meant is, I just woke up. I had enjoyed a wonderful deep sleep during which time I had the most exciting and interesting dream. Very realistic.
I've been sleeping very well of late . . . and when I sleep well I have wonderful dreams. So wonderful I sometimes regret having awakened.
I have led an exciting, adventuresome life. Jumped out of airplanes, (yes, with a parachute), scuba dived, practiced and played karate, served as a

at three-tenths of a second. This may not seem like much of a difference, but in electronically-timed Fast Draw competition, micro-seconds translate to huge differences. Glenn Ford’s time, for example, is 33% or 1/3 faster than Hugh O’Brien’s. Glenn Ford, clearly, the faster of the two. (Note: Hollywood actors who are among the fastest-of-thefast do not always exhibit their true, unleashed speed in making Old Westerns – so as fast as they look on the big screen, they could have been a lot quicker!)
THE SHOCKING TRUTH REVEALED. As fast as actors Hugh O’Brian and Glenn Ford were, they were still not the fastest in Hollywood. Regarding Hollywood’s fastest guns, the answer can be found with two men that seemed to be so far removed from the equation that most of the general public – upon first learning their names as being the quickest on the draw -- are shocked into dead silence. Followed by disbelief.
For openers, there is this one delicious item: both of these actors stand outside the periphery of Western movies; their fame resting in a far different genre of entertainment.
Yet, it is a well-known fact within Hollywood circles, along with abundant proof, that the fastest guns were . . . Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis, Jr.
With all the mountains of books, movies, biographies, trivial obituaries after their deaths, and even amongst rabid fans and astute film critics, it remains almost an unknown fact that both Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis, Jr. were, indeed, Hollywood’s two fastest guns (during their prime and among their movie-making colleagues). Regarding Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis, Jr. being preeminent in fast-draw competition, there is little disagreement among the cognoscenti. This assessment is widely agreed upon by official historians of the Wild West and other experts in the field. According to Bob Munden,

In 1961, on the Emmy Awardwinning talk/variety television program, “The Mike Douglas Show,” Sammy Davis, Jr. presented fast-draw world record holder, Bob Munden, with a customized Colt Peacemaker in recognition of Munden’s skill in fast-draw competitions. Though Sammy was one of Hollywood’s fastest on the draw, he was nowhere within the league of Munden and others of his ilk. Keeping things in proper perspective, that is not to say that Hugh O’Brian, Glenn Ford, James Garner, Lee Van Cleef, Clint Eastwood and a young John Wayne were not fast, because these actors comprise the fastest of their Hollywood breed – except for Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis, Jr. who were unequalled in their respective me there. speed of draw.
Even the highly respected authority, Marshall Trimble, American author, college professor, vice president of the Wild West History, and Arizona’s official state historian, published such opinion regarding the paramount speed-ofdraw by Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis, Jr.. In the relatively recent December 28, 2017 edition of Trimble’s “True West Magazine,” even guest writer Ron Bolza agreed: “Some of the names might surprise you. How about Sammy Davis, Jr. and Jerry Lewis? Hugh O’Brian claimed his two-fifths of a second was the fastest, but Davis, Jr. and Lewis were reportedly faster.”

gunslinger).
This meant that some of the world’s fastest guns were brought into Hollywood, as teachers.
Quick-draw artist, Arvo Ojala (mentioned earlier in this article), schooled James Arness (Matt Dillon) to the point where Arness became aboveaverage fast. The television producers and directors had decided to actually use Arvo Ojala in the opening sequence of Gunsmoke, where Ojala plays the unnamed man drawing against Marshall Dillon. The script called for Dillon to outdraw the bad guy (Arvo Ojala), shooting Ojala dead. Unexpectedly, it never turned out the way it was originally planned. Ojala was supposed to “purposely” slow-down his speed so that Matt Dillion would prove faster and, therefore, the victor.
However, Ojala was the “genuine article,” a crusty Norwegian whose speed was clocked and verified a number of times at an unbelievable onesixth of a second. In short, speed of draw was in Ojala’s blood; trained into his brain cells; pressed into his subconscious; imprinted in his every fiber. Even in his sleep, his digital reflexes moved – independent of thought – but purely by instinct. In the opening scene of Gunsmoke, Matt Dillon draws, but the other gunman (Ojala) fires first by a significant margin – then Dillon fires! Instead of re-shooting the scene, the prevailing rationale to viewers is that: Matt Dillon was outdrawn but the villain missed – and Marshall Dillon did not. Thus, rewarding accuracy over irrational and clumsy quickness. To this very day, in Gunsmoke re-runs, during the opening sequence, you can clearly hear Marshall Matt Dillon being outdrawn on Dodge City’s Front Street, by the unnamed man in black (Arvo Ojala).
As an inside joke on the camera crew, Arness and Ojala secretly huddled and planned a shocking alternate opening shootout scene.
In the face-off duel, Arvo outdraws Arness again, but, this time Marshall Matt Dillon falls to the ground, dead. The entire camera crew, producers, director, and script writers were all reduced to uncontrolled laughter!
WESTERN MOVIES AND TV SHOWS ENJOY WORLD POPULARITY. Western television shows and movies were not just popular on American soil. They had a strong following in Europe, Asia, South America, China, and beyond. Even during the tense propaganda and conflicting ideologies during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, Russians could not resist the lure of the American Wild West days. SOVIET LEADER, LEONID BREZHNEV, LOVED AMERICA’S FASTDRAW COWBOYS. Prior to his visit to the United States to meet with U. S. President Richard M. Nixon in 1973, the Soviet Premier was asked if there was anyone in America he would most like to meet. He had the pick of great Americans, from esteemed novelist, Arthur Miller, on down. All he had to do was choose one.
Brezhnev had already met other worldly figures, VIPS and celebrities, alike. Most out of necessity in the sphere of politics, diplomacy, and social-economic fence-mending. Some American celebrities he had met, but not by choice. They were more-or-less thrust upon him, presented to him, at various functions, such as found in “receiving lines” where introductions are automatically made. This time would be different.
Brezhnev was given a choice, which he clearly took full advantage.
While still on his own Russian soil, prior to boarding his plane to America, Brezhnev was asked by his personal aide, confident, and translator, Viktor Sukhodrev, who he, Brezhnev, would most like to meet -above all other Americans – outside of politics.

Water Tax…..Really?
California lawmakers recognized water as a basic human right in 2012. Since then, voters have approved over $10 billion in bonds to fund statewide water projects, yet for some Californians, clean and safe drinking water is still unavailable. So why is this? And why are we being asked to pay a tax every time we turn on the faucet?
According to a recent study, 360,000 people living in mostly rural and agricultural regions of the state are served by water systems that provide unsafe drinking water, and around 6 million have water providers that have violated state standards in recent years. Unfortunately, many small water districts have been unable to provide the clean water that many take for granted.
To provide the funding necessary to clean up unsafe and contaminated water systems, a water tax is again under consideration by the new governor in Sacramento. When the idea was first proposed last year it met with a lot of opposition, including the Association of California Water Agencies which represents over 400 water districts throughout

the state. Though the idea died last session, it has now been revived. Fortunately, there is a bi-partisan alternative. Assembly Constitutional Amendment 3 (ACA 3), which is co-authored by Assemblymembers Devon Mathis (R – Visalia) , and Eduardo Garcia (D – Coachella), pays for clean water in the regular budget, providing a stable source of funding for projects to improve California’s water supply, quality and delivery systems -- all without a new water tax. Access to clean, safe water is a fundamental human right, a fact that should be reflected in our budget priorities. Passage of ACA 3 will make water project funding a budget priority and an integral part of the state’s regular budgeting process. With a budget surplus estimated at $21 billion, there is simply no need to tax our water. Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolf hound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

I took down my Rebel flag (which you can't buy on EBAY any more) and peeled the NRA sticker off my front window.
I disconnected my home alarm system and quit the candy-ass Neighborhood Watch.
I bought two Syrian flags and put one at each corner of the front yard. Then I purchased the black flag of ISIS (which you CAN Buy on EBAY) and ran it up the flag pole.
Now the local police, sheriff, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, Secret Service and other agencies are all watching my house 24/7. I've NEVER felt safer and I'm saving $69.95 a month that ADT used to charge me. Plus, I bought burkas for me to wear when I shop or travel.
Everyone moves out of the way, and security can't pat me down.
If they say I'm a male wearing a burka, I just say I'm feeling like a woman today. Hot Damn...Safe at last!

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
They didn't quite get the True POW picture
Some of the logbook entries made by Kellogg, who was a U.S. Army Air Corps B-17 pilot, were made while he was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III. They are historical if not somewhat hysterical. Jack arrived at Stalag Luft III two weeks after the famed “great escape” took place at the prison camp designed for Allied airmen.
He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to
stay as long.'
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
Curious whether her husband was really where he said he was and able to take in some of the countryside: “It seems almost incredible that you should be in the heart of Germany but you are, aren't you?"
A bored housewife wrote: “It's the same dull routine these days. Work in the a.m., come home, go to a dance or a cinema. It's so monotonous. Still, I suppose there are a few things you do without too, so I have to do two weeks in the hospital and I can't blame you this time." From a fiancé … “I'm getting married on the 29th so please think kindly of me on that day and wish me well." “I hope you will not return passiondead. Glad you are having a rest. Personally, I'm working night and day. Did I tell you I got married recently." - an ex- fiancé
“Hurry up and get back. When you do, you will be in the money and I'll be in the mood. I married your brother and I am so happy to be in your family as I will be able to see you often." -- an exfiancé
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
Worrying about holiday cheer, one wife complained: “I enclosed some lovely mince pies, but the Red Cross sent them back." Confirming German news reports: “I read in a POW magazine that Kriegies (prisoners) dream only of food at night. Could this be true?”
During World War II, not everything was grim. In fact, there were occasions when naiveté turned to black humor. The late Jack Kellogg of Vista recounted some humorous, if not, unbelievable portions of letters received by British airmen while incarcerated.
15. Law of Logical ArgumentAnything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
17. Oliver's Law of Public Speaking - A closed mouth gathers no feet.
Historically Speaking
A thoughtful wife: “It is not very nice to be a prisoner-of-war, but it is honorable. I am having an affair with a Canadian airman and he is having cigarettes sent to you from Canada."
"During my first two months as a POW, I shared a small room with six British RAF (Royal Air Force) officers," Kellogg recalled. "There were many English flyers who had been incarcerated at Luft III for as long as four years.
He said daily German propaganda radio broadcasts beamed to Great Britain told English listeners how “fabulous” life was behind the barbed wires of a POW camp, describing it as a carefree life, consisting of frequent visits to area German tourist attractions. Jack thought it was amazing how gullible people can be if they hear or read something designed for information. Kellogg found some of the letters from British wives, fiancée’s, lovers and family members were just a tad on the naive side, so he jotted down a few excerpts and kept them.
One wife wrote: “I am so glad you got shot down before flying became really dangerous." Another thought … “It must be wonderful for you to get away to holiday camps, enjoy cinemas and those lovely long walks we read about in the paper." One wife was concerned about keeping her husband abreast of the times: “I suppose you are able to get the hometown newspapers."
A departure from reality: “It's strange when one is flying, one's cares and troubles are forgotten." Did I tell you that: “You must stop writing to John. He has been dead for two years." An angry wife: “Your kit (duffle bag) arrived home and the first thing I saw when looking through it was a lot of photos of ugly-looking girls."
A thoughtful wife: “I am not sending you any photos as they will just make you homesick."
A tourist-minded wife: “Try to get to Dresden and have a look at the picture gallery. The Boomadonna is worth seeing." A wife who reads between the lines: “As you have been asking for a halfdozen pairs of socks in every letter, I must presume you are joking, so I am sending you pajamas."
Jack shared these and many other stories from his exploits in central Europe. He was shot down and was captured a few days later and sent to Luft III, but not before being brutally beaten in a Hungarian prison. He was a good friend and I am grateful to have known him. SCAG SEZ: The best way our elected politicians can govern is to keep their politics out of politics” – Cecil Scaglione, Mature Life Features.

Brezhnev had seen The Rifleman TV series in Eastern bloc countries and Europe and he now became as excited as a young school boy over the prospect of meeting Connors in person. As the U. S. press corps would later print “Brezhnev was so excited!”
The Rifleman was one of the few American shows allowed on Russian television at the time, and that was because it was the favorite of the General Secretary of the Communist Party. The Rifleman ran on American television from 1958 to 1963 but can still – to this day – be seen on re-runs. The stage had now been set for this seemingly unlikely and historic meeting between the leader of the Soviet Union and an American Wild West icon.

were now formed into a receiving line to meet the head of the Communist Party.
At the end of the line of guests, stood Chuck Connors.
Richard Nixon’s White House Press Secretary, Ronald Ziegler, walked to the end of the line, directly to Chuck Connors. Ziegler’s words to the Rifleman were in excited, animated tones: “Chuck, Brezhnev is a big fan of yours, do something when you meet him.” Connors would not disappoint.
When the moment of truth came and Connors finally stood directly in front of Brezhnev, the eyes of the Communist Party leader widened and he fell into stunned, momentary speechlessness. Brezhnev’s dream had just materialized before him. First a vigorous handshake, then an exuberant Brezhnev could contain himself no longer as he practically jumped into the arms of his idol! A 6’ 6” Connors lifted the 5’ 8” leader off the ground in a Russian bear-hug. The U. S. press corps’ cameras flashed like a million suns and the celebrated “bear hug” made the

Chuck Connors spoke to Brezhnev as tape-recorders caught the dialogue: “Mr. Brezhnev, on behalf of everybody who ever made a Western – including every member of the crew, every actor and actress – I’d like to present you with a pair of matching Colt .45 revolvers, that I used in a show called Branded.” At a time when the Communist countries called America’s culture decadent and propaganda machines orchestrated to destroy American ideology, demeaning our cultural values and democracy in general – this, was a milestone moment, chiseled in history. A brief moment, when time stood still, and memories of the Cold War were set on “defrost.” When America’s Wild West history, somehow, accomplished what endless diplomatic missions failed miserably at. The two super powers of the world coalesced in mutual respect via a simple bear hug.

Hi Neighbor,
In 46 years in the law business I can say I have seen it all-Divorces, Adoptions, Business, Auto Accidents, Dog Bites, Defective Home Construction, Workers’ Compensation, Libel-Slander, etc. Small cases and huge-tragic quadriplegic injury cases (gun shot wounds). I have been a Judge in the Superior Court, Municipal Court, Workers’ Compensation, Arbitrator, Mediator, etc. I have taken care of thousands and thousands of satisfied clients. By the way, we believe in Jesus Christ.

The following day, in the Nixon compound, Brezhnev was shown how to twirl the guns by Chuck Connors (through interpreter). Brezhnev’s Brezhnev invited Connors to come to Russia to make a movie. And Connors graciously accepted.
Visiting the Soviet Union, as the personal guest of Brezhnev, Connors did a film, a 90-minute documentary in Russia titled: “Peace and Friendship.” The film was a cordial wish for a more peaceful, unified world between the United States and the Soviet Union, with no political intervention or overtones – just humankind, rejoicing in the promise of a better tomorrow.
Unfortunately, in America a few people in governmental positions saw things differently. Unbelievably, a few individuals in high places called Chuck Connors a Communist.
Then they mailed Chuck Connors the torn pieces in large envelopes.
For the remainder of his life, Connors was deeply hurt by his erstwhile close friends who had, unexpectedly, turned against him.
Chuck Connors was a staunch, conservative Republican, campaigned for Ronald Reagan and committed much of his energy to charitable work. His “Chuck Connors Charitable Invitational Golf Tournament” donated its entire proceeds to the Angel View Crippled Children’s Foundation. Connors was also a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. At a time when “Communist” was a label profusely and recklessly attributed to many staunch Americans, Chuck Connors would become wrongly accused. What he attempted to do, was solely in the name of peace.
When Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev Two men, whom Chuck had passed away in 1982, Connors thought were close friends, one expressed an interest in travela general in the U. S. Brezhnev would have liked the Rifleman to have been there, at his funeral that day, in Russia. In Russia, where – according to Brezhnev’s interpreter and confident, Viktor Sukhodrev, Brezhnev “Continued to wear the guns Chuck Connors gave him as often as possible.”
EPILOGUE. Unlike any other culture on Earth, our early Western days are uniquely ours. There may be similar parallels elsewhere – as all cultures go through early stages of development and expansion – but our Tombstones, Dodge cities, lawmen and notorious gunslingers form a most unique legacy that is known throughout the world. In retrospect, contemporary historians of the early West find the public’s fascination of gunslingers, and their speed of draw, to be a fascinating study. Whether one is comfortable or not with the Wild West and its segments dealing with notorious figures of bank robbers, thieves, and cold-blooded killers, the American West and its pioneering days are historical truths that cannot be ignored. Every civilized country today, without exception, has had its
violent and vigilante beginnings.
Today, the Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA) and the World Fast Draw Association (WFDA), is one of the fastestgrowing sports in the world. The sport is open to both men and women. Such organizations teach gun safety, foremost, and gun handling and sport, secondary. Today, The Cowboy Fast Draw Association has over 70 affiliated clubs across North America and several foreign countries. As you read this, new clubs are forming, constantly, throughout the globe with clubs accelerating in Europe, Asia, the Orient, and Latin American countries.
This is an astonishing level of global interest in our American Old West. America’s fascination with our early Western days is no longer a strictly American interest and pastime.
That we Americans have a tendency to romanticize, sanitize, and wax nostalgic over our

Pastor Sam Brumit Mission 316 -0 San Marcos Overcoming Fear
I am not a risk taker by nature. I think about things…and sometimes overthink them. When I don’t have control over the future, it scares me. I sometimes worry about things like health, relationships, finances, retirement, etc. I borrow trouble more often than I should. I get a lot of exercise “jumping” to conclusions. I know I’m not the only one! Slowly, however, I am learning to trust…God. I’m learning to pray. I read a lot and today I ran across this verse. Isaiah 35:4. It simply states “Tell those who worry, the anxious and fearful: Take strength; have courage! There’s nothing to fear. Look, here—your God! Right here is your God! The balance is shifting; God will right all wrongs.
One thing I know is that worry steals joy. So, take a deep breath and laugh at your fear. Really. (I don’t always practice this, but I’m learning to do this). One of my wife’s favorite verses is 2 Timothy 1:7…
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” One more thing. Perfect love casts out fear. It’s like the opposite of fear is…love. So, start loving and fears diminish.
Sometimes when I’m feeling afraid, I use these words to pray a version of this verse: Lord, I believe this fear is not from you. Take the fear and replace it with your love. Anyone fearful today? As you read this, turn your fear into faith. It works.

This week I attended the EUSD State of the District address. I wish you all could have been there and seen the amazing children we have in our school system, and the great progress and achievements our teachers and staff have attained. It was really impressive and deserves a hearty well-done!
I also attended several meetings ranging in topics from county health issues to economic development. The exciting thing about all these meetings and discussions is that there are so

All day long we answer questions. Why is my PC so slow? Do I need more RAM? Will an SSD make my computer go faster? Is my computer worth upgrading? What’s it worth as a trade in? Can you transfer my files? Which is better AMD or Intel? My Internet is slow. Microsoft says I have a virus! My mouse freezes. My printer doesn’t print. What video card do I need for my flight simulator? Why do all my gay friends have Apples? My WiFi keeps crashing. Can’t open my Email. Should I upgrade to Windows 10? What’s the best anti-virus program? What’s the best way to back up my files? Is Google spying on me? Would a desktop, notebook or tablet best meet my needs? The list goes on and there are new ones every day. A very smart teacher once told me this. “The only dumb question is the one you never asked.”
ed a little help with their ten year old PC. With Windows 7, a 500GB HDD, 4GB of RAM and an integrated video card it was exactly what they needed for what they did, Email, Face Book and storing pictures. They would get no benefit from a $2500 gamer PC. The previous week we helped a young man design and assemble a $2500 super gamer. It looked like the Las Vegas strip but it was exactly what he needed to get the appearance and performance desired. No more, no less. Last fall we helped outfit a new medical business with a dozen PCs and screens all integrated into a network to display images to their clients and run their business. By using industrial refurbs we helped these savvy business owners save thousands of dollars without sac-
rificing quality or performance.
It is always possible that we cannot provide exactly what a customer has in mind, it can happen. We know that no single business has all the answers to every customer’s needs. We do know that we have more answers that anyone else in our business and that if we can’t get you exactly what you need we can probably point you in the right direction. The sign over the cash register at Cactus Jack’s, The Rainbow Computer Emporium reads. “IF WE AIN’T GOT IT, YOU SURE AS HELL DON’T NEED IT”
That is just not us.
There is an optimal configuration for every business and home user and we shine at helping our customers figure out what is best for them. The four basic components that determine how well your PC meets your needs are, The CPU, the RAM, the storage device (HDD or SSD) and the video system. The trick is to find that combination that completely meets your requirements without wasting money on features that don’t. Last Friday a retired couple need-
years there will be construction in downtown Oceanside. Upgrades will be made to storm drains, water and sewer lines, and new buildings will be constructed. A new parking garage will be opening and other spaces will be temporarily unavailable. New hotels and mixed-use properties are being constructed to develop the 9-Block Master Plan designed to revitalize Downtown Oceanside. This will give us more housing, and retail and commercial space to boost the economic vitality in Oceanside.
With these changes happening now, many opportunities will open for new and creative retailers to serve our consumer market. Rick Wright, Executive Director of MainStreet Oceanside said, “our retail offerings are fairly low and we strongly believe that we can compete with online shopping by recruiting experiential and unique brick and mortar businesses for our community. These projects are estimated to bring 217 new residential homes, create over 1000 jobs, and offer over 39,000sq. ft. of commercial space. That directly supports our Oceanside community and gives residents and businesses more choices, options and opportunities, as well as new revenue to support services for residents.” We have created a comprehensive marketing campaign to inform our locals and visitors about what’s to come and expect while visiting your favorite business. Under the headline of Building A Stronger Foundation for our Downtown, our public campaign is all about how visitors and locals live, work and play in Downtown Oceanside, and it asks the question How Do YOU Oside? This collaborative approach is about both providing information on construction and parking as we grow, and involving the public in our downtown community. #HowDoYouOside can connect with residents through social media outlets and websites for information about construction, parking and upcoming meetings. We are asking the public to sign up via text message or email by visiting www.HowDoYouOside.com/sign-up. This information will alert you to street clo-
sures, parking options, shopping and dining choices and outreach meetings before visiting Downtown Oceanside.
