Famed American humorist, Will Rogers, often quipped: “I never had my Americanism doubted before. My mother and my father both were part Cherokee Indian. Of course my people didn’t come over on the Mayflower – but they were there to meet the folks when they landed.” The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

Most everyone knows that vaudeville star, radio pioneer, newspaper columnist, and one of America’s top movies stars, Will Rogers, was of Native American extraction.
On that fact, alone, there is nothing new under the sun. But, few know that a myth-buster
would have his hands full in clearing away unnecessary cobwebs of misinformation concerning the real Will Rogers.
EXPLODING A MYTH. Will Rogers (1879-1935), known as “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son,” was never a “rags-to-riches” story – although his life has often been, erro-
neously, reported that way by numerous newspapers, magazines, and television documentaries, all of which have played fast-and-loose with the facts. Nevertheless, the Horatio Alger approach is irresistibly romantic at the expense of actual truth. Despite reports to the contrary, Will Rogers was born to a wealthy and

upscale Cherokee family at The Dog Iron Ranch, just 30 minutes from Oologah in Indian territory. “Oologah” is Cherokee for “dark cloud.” Amusingly, Will Rogers said he always told folks he was “from Claremore because no one but an Indian could pronounce Oologah.”
NATIVE AMERICAN ROOTS. Although Will Rogers was only part Native American on both his parents’ side, he steadfastly identified with the Cherokee, as did his parents before him. He often said to great laughter, “I have Indian blood in me. I have just enough white blood for you to question my honesty.” OKLAHOMA’S FAVORITE SON. Known as “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son,” Will Rogers’ fame during his lifetime made him one of the most beloved individuals in American history, to the point of becoming, in essence, “America’s Favorite Son,” a mantle which he humbly, but proudly, wore like an emperor’s crown. However, Will Rogers always cautioned against anyone, including himself, from acquiring a boastful ego. He always remained humble, and self-effacing. He was fond of saying: “If you get to thinking you’re a person of influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.” THE COWBOY PHILOSOPHER. He answered to many affectionate American nicknames, such as the “Cowboy Philosopher,” wherein he

I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day.
The bull started to service the cows within two days, all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor's cows! He's like a machine!
I don't know what was in the pills the Vet gave him ......... but they kind of taste like peppermint. ••••• One day, a blonde went into an appliance store that was having a sale on TVs. She walked up to the counter and said to the clerk, "I would like to buy this TV."
would appear on stage dressed in simple western garb, widely chewing gum and skillfully using his rope like a lasso, all the while spinning yarns about life, homespun values, and the murky waters of politics. His remarks kept the field of play level, never allowing politicians to think themselves above the rest of the population. His political remarks were funny but they also served to deflate the egos of overly-pompous politicos and, by so doing, he elevated the common citizen in the process: “A senator got up today and called his fellow senators sons of wild jackasses. Now, if you think the senators were hot, imagine how the jackasses felt.” And yet, Will Rogers, the Cowboy Philosopher, never spared the rod on himself: “When I first started out to write and misspelled a few words, people said I was plain ignorant. But when I got all the words wrong, they declared I was a humorist.”
“THE VOICE OF EVERYMAN.” Will Rogers had his finger on the pulse of Americans everywhere and often said out loud what they often felt deep inside. For the average citizen who harbored feelings of helplessness and suspicion regarding Big Government, Rogers handed them a club to swing: “This country has gotten where it is in spite of politics, not by the aid of it. That we have carried as much political bunk as we have and still survived shows we are a super nation.” By so doing, Will Rogers became a voice for every American who otherwise felt helpless in making known The clerk replied, "Sorry, I don't sell to blondes." So, the blonde dyed her hair brown and returned the next day. Again, she went up to the counter and said, "I would like to buy this TV." Again, the clerk answered, "Sorry, I don't sell to blondes." Puzzled, the blonde asked, "How did you know I was a blonde?"
The clerk replied, "Because that is a microwave." ••••• Child at dinner table: "Are caterpillars good to eat?" Parent: "No. Why would you ask a question like that?" Child: "Well, there was one in your salad, but it's gone now." The South - You Gotta Love It
Alabama
A group of Alabama friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night, one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under the weight of an eight-point buck. "Where's Henry?" the others asked.
"Henry had a stroke of some kind. He's a couple of miles back up the trail," the successful hunter replied.
"You left Henry laying out there and carried the deer back?" they inquired.
"A tough call," nodded the hunter. "But I figured no one is going to steal Henry!" Georgia
their frustrations and anger towards politicians in general. As one historian phrased it, Will Rogers became “The Voice of Everyman” – a voice for the average citizen who strongly identified with his simple but honest viewpoints, unfiltered and uncensored.
He became a virtual mirror in which 127 million Americans could glimpse themselves: their aches, their pains, their hopes, their dreams, their need to seek refuge in laughter. Will Rogers seemed never to disappoint.
Rogers’ biting satirical wit was a dual-edged sword which could cause an entire nation of people to seriously pause and reflect upon themselves, then, as with any good therapy, still laugh out loud during the process: “Live in such a way that you wouldn’t be ashamed to sell the family parrot to the town gossip.” He possessed the diplomatic magic to make his audiences, simultaneously, turn inwardly in soul-searching reflection, and then laugh – all within the same sentence.
For example, on the sensitive subject of religious beliefs, he said what many truly felt: “Spiritually, it’s important to forgive those who hurt you, but you don’t have to hang out with them.”
On political frustrations: “Have you noticed that no matter who we elect, he is just as bad as the one he replaces?”
On success in life: “If you want to be successful it’s just this simple: Know what you’re doing. Love what you’re doing. Believe in what you’re doing.”
On soothing the American ego’s feeling of detachment, ignorance, and alienation from sophisticated politics he wisely, but humorously, counseled: “Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.”
Will Rogers openly identified with simple, but proud, American values. He connected powerfully with common grassroots America, reflecting the noble frontier underpinnings prior to modernization: “A man who don’t love his horse, there is something the matter with him.” On truth behind the curtain of diplomacy: “Diplomacy is the art of saying ‘Nice doggie’ until you can find a rock.”
On the scandalous mess by Big Government: “If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can’t it get us out?” Will Rogers was a “mixed bag’ in which everyone could find something to treasure. As The New York Times wrote: “Most important of all, he had the knack of translating into trenchant phrases the inchoate thoughts of masses of ‘average’ Americans.” One of his most enduring comedic quips remains a modern classic among politicians today on Capitol

HIS DEATH TRAUMATIZES A NATION. Few human beings were so lovingly clasped to the bosom of Americans as was Will Rogers. Simply put, Will Rogers became one of the most loved individuals in the entire sweep of American history. It is virtually impossible for today’s generation to truly comprehend the impact he had in the era he occupied.
Certainly, there were other famous Americans who were deeply loved but, realistically speaking, not by all people, creeds, and backgrounds. Will Rogers was an anomaly who cut a Paul Bunyan-wide swath; a seemingly mythical persona whose giant stride of popularity and acceptance effortlessly crossed all demographics. He was the needle who popped the balloon of pomposity; the court jester who danced with great immunity in pointing out that the emperor was, indeed, without apparel; the Biblical David who slew Big Government with arrows of ridicule; the People’s Champion who, in many ways, set the common folk free -- to freely laugh at political giants; dare to chastise hypocrisy; and truly realize that politicians can be fired at the polls.
When Will Rogers perished in a plane crash on August 15, 1935, an

entire nation of Americans were instantly plunged into deep, dark mourning. Many wept openly in the streets. A part of “Everyman” had just died.
Newspaper headlines proclaimed: “A NATION MOURNS,” and historians stated it as: “The greatest outpouring of genuine affection since Lincoln passed away.”
NBC and CBS radio went completely off the air for over half-an-hour in mourning his loss. Theatres across our Great Land darkened their big screens in a most rare tribute to his death. Stunned audiences across the United States sat and wept in darkened movie houses as the silver screen remained dark for over 30 minutes in a gesture of mourning; strangers often hugging strangers as if a common family member had just passed.
Will Rogers was no ordinary man. His celebrity never set him apart from everyone else. He grew like a second skin; became a part of America’s lifestyle; and rose like the sunrise to greet them in their daily lives: over 40 million people (almost 1/3 of America’s total population at the time), woke up to read his “Daily Telegrams,” published by The New York Times, which in turn were syndicated to even hundreds of other newspapers throughout America, and even north to Canada.
There was no legitimate meter to gauge America’s love affair with Will Rogers. As the year of his death in 1935 was drawing to a close, people

World Spay Day is Tuesday, February 27th – Preventing unwanted and unplanned litters – and tackling the challenge of animal homelessness - is one of the best things we can do for our animals; which is why the community spay/neuter services of the Humane Society are so critically important. In addition to altering the thousands of animals they adopt out each year, they also have a targeted, low-cost spay/neuter program for community-owned pit bulls, Chihuahuas and cats – the animals that typically inundate our local shelters. Statistics show that upward of 90 percent of animals in underserved communities are unaltered, so local zip codes have been identified where a high number of stray and underage animals are entering shelters. For pet parents in these areas with pit bulls, Chihuahuas and cats, we offer complimentary spay/neuter services as an incentive to prevent accidental and unnecessary litters. These targeted efforts enabled us to alter 6,200 animals last year – a grand total of more than 25,000 community-owned animals altered since our Community Spay/Neuter Program began in 2012. This proactive work is easing the current and future strain on local shelters, while also helping to give homeless animals the chance to become adopted more quickly. There are also health benefits to spaying/neutering your pet. More information on that can be found in their blog post. The impact and importance of spaying and neutering pets is always at the forefront of what we do, but it’s especially so with World Spay Day coming up on Tuesday, Feb. 27. To empower our animal-loving community around this special day, we plan to give away 100 free spay and neuter appointments to qualifying, low-income individuals at this weekend’s PAWS Community Outreach event in Barrio

Yes, there were politicians of renown, and Hollywood movie stars of the time, and certainly no shortage of glittering VIPs – but none truly belonged to the “average American” as did Will Rogers. Unpretentious, unsophisticated, he was essentially a simple country bumpkin, a rural rube, who found his way to success – but without the artificial trappings of the rich and famous.
He genuinely, without pretense, belonged to the masses, and they to him.
Prior to his death, his weekly radio broadcast (one of the first humorous political shows) became the most listened program in the United States on Sunday evenings, by 1935. He was, simultaneously, America’s most popular radio personality, newspaper columnist, and the second-highest grossing movie star, shaded only by Shirley Temple. (Note: “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son” had made 71 movies, 50 silent films, and 21 “talkies.”)
HIS LEGACY REFUSES TO DIE. America refuses to relinquish its loving embrace for its “Cowboy Philosopher.”
Today, in Oklahoma alone, 13 public schools are named after him. The Boy Scouts of America honored him with the “Will Rogers Council” and the “Will Rogers Scout,” both paying homage to his name.

Spaying or neutering your pet is a victory for animals in general – whether it’s protecting the health and wellness of your own pet or preventing future animals from experiencing homelessness. To alter your pet is to choose to be part of a proactive solution that saves lives, and not fill shelters. Thank you for joining us to protect animals from the heartache of homelessness. Spread the word to spay and neuter your pets and encourage all your friends and families to do the same for theirs.

The “Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun” is the official title of the 80-foot high observation tower on Cheyenne Mountain, just west of Colorado Springs.
Today, there is a “Will Rogers State Historic Park” in Pacific Palisades, California. It lies in the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles. Its description says, “By the mid1930s, Will Rogers was one of the most popular and highest paid actors in Hollywood and ‘America’s Most Beloved Citizen.’” The ranch section of the park became the place where Will Rogers and his family and friends could relax, and enjoy his favorite pastimes of riding and roping.
Several schools in California, far from where he was born, have been named after him. And little school children are quick to tell you all about “Will Rogers, the famous cowboy!” from their elementary school history lessons. A newer generation of children are rediscovering him with renewed excitement! Large, oversized crayon lettering and caricatures of him adorn their precious pictures – treasures they carry home to their parents who, in turn, gasp and applaud their progeny with loving encouragement. The Paper • Page 4 • February 22, 2018 $18 Million Buys Old Palomar Hospital
The old Palomar Hospital, located at the east end of Grand Avenue, has been sold for $18 million. The hospital had been appraised at $25 million just a few years ago so it appears the developer, Integral Communities, has gotten a bargain. The hospital, first opened in 1950 as Palomar Memorial Hospital with 37 beds and grew over the years to accommodate more than 300 patients.
The hospital tower has nine stories, the main part of hospital has six. For years the hospital not only treated patients but served as a landmark for residents and visitors alike.
The hospital and 14 acres on which it sits is prime real estate. The developer says they plan on a mixed use of residential, office and professional with about 1,000 potential units. The hospital itself will be razed and new construction will begin shortly thereafter.
There is a 15 month window before all of that happens, however, as Palomar Health needs that time to relocate existing services to other locations. The sale appears to have the unanimous support of the Escondido City Council.
Man About Town
It didn't start out as a particularly scary evening . . . far from it. Rather routine, in fact.
Evelyn was sleeping, still trying to recover from that bout of the flu that had laid her low for the better part of six days in a row. She was starting to return to normal but still required more than the usual amount of sleep. Her strength had been sapped and now she was trying to regain it.
I had hired a beautiful young gal named Katrina to help take the load off of Evelyn. Katrina knew how to keep books, was familiar with Quicken, Excel, all the stuff accounting types need to keep the dollars and cents in line. She was bi-lingual, speaking English, Spanish, Farsi (Persian) and Arabic. Single and attractive, I didn't know how long she'd be with us before some gallant young lad would come and sweep her off her feet and dash off to a lovely little cottage with a picket fence.
Camp Pendleton Marines Convicted of Rape, Child Porn
Thanks to multiple Freedom of Information requests filed by the San Diego Union-Tribune it has come to light that a number of Marines have been convicted of rape and/or child porn.
The San Diego based paper reports prosecutors have convicted several Marines in recent weeks for crimes including rape and child pornography, and dozens of similar cases continue to percolate through the military criminal justice system.
Documents released by the Marines reveal some of the most serious cases tied to senior leaders like exChief Warrant Officer E. DeLeon Jr. At a Camp Pendleton court-martial last month, a military judge convicted DeLeon of possessing and distributing child pornography. Although the judge sentenced him to seven years behind bars, a pretrial agreement capped the Marine’s imprisonment at five years.
Highly redacted records trace DeLeon’s crimes back to Nov. 26, 2016, on Camp Pendleton. He distributed a digital image of a child engaging in sex. Three days earlier, he communicated to an unidentified person his desire to molest “a little girl,” an act he thought “sounds amazing,” according to his criminal records.
I told Katrina I was going out for some fresh air, thought I'd go up and visit my old stomping grounds, Dixon Lake, where I had owned the concession for boat rentals and fishing permits for some 27 years. She said she'd catch any phone calls and evelyn was to call her if she needed anything.
So, off I went to Dixon Lake. The sun had already set but I had brought along a flashlight and, together with the night time lighting in the picnic area where the ranger offices are located, I managed to retrace some of the paths I had often trod during those 27 years that I owned "Lyle's at Dixon Lake." Lots of great memories. Then the reverie was broken as my cellphone buzzed. I checked it and saw in incoming text message.
"You are in danger! Someone is tracking you and intends to kill you! He is upset because you've been arguing against gun control and supporting the 2nd Amendment. He heard about your presentation to the Escondido Fish and Game Association and he is livid! He wants to make you an example! This guy is dangerous! Keep your eyes and ears open!"
Well! Had I been a young 25-35 year old guy, I would have been alarmed at this message. But I'm considerably past the 25-35 year old category. Another twenty years and I will qualify as an 'elderly gent.' Not quite as swift of foot, or mind, nor am I quite as strong as I used to be. How to deal with this? I've never been stalked or hunted before. You can bet your last nickle that I was alarmed. I headed toward the ranger station but though the lights were on, there was no one inside. I figured they were on their
Camp Pendleton Lance Cpl. M. F. Currington also was found guilty last month of abusing anabolic steroids and sexually abusing a child. He was sentenced to three years behind bars. Assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, Currington’s charges stemmed from a late 2016 probe into steroid and drug paraphernalia possession, according to records released to the Union-Tribune.
Another Camp Pendleton Marine, Lance Cpl. B.J. Morton of 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, also was convicted last month of possessing and distributing child pornography. He was reduced to private and given a bad conduct discharge but a pretrial agreement capped his confinement at 1 ½ years behind bars. He was incarcerated on Aug. 14 after investigators accused him of possessing three videos and other sexually explicit images of children, according to his records.

I was alone. In a darkened park. No protection. (And, no gun). No means of protecting myself. Suddenly, headlights! Maybe that was the ranger truck! No, it wasn't. It was a sedan of some type. One man got out and he was carrying what looked like a Kalishnokov. A high powered assault weapon. Great!
And I didn't have so much as a pistol to defend myself with. "I know you're here, Davis. Come out, come out, wherever you are! I wanna have a little talk with you!" I ducked down behind some bushes and dialed 911.
"Your call is very important to us. Please remain on the line as we attend to other callers. You will be in a queue and we will answer your call in the order received. Your call is very important to us . . . yadda yadda yadda . . ." The hunter now shouldered his weapon and pulled out a huge sword or knife. What in the hell is going on?!
I became aware of some rustling to the right of me and suddenly, there was Katrina!
"Katrina! What in the hell are you doing here?! We're in danger! Get down!" "I thought I could help. I heard you were in trouble."
"You should have stayed away; now it's gonna be twice as hard to avoid this guy. Here, give me your hand. We'll

I took her hand and began to lead her in the direction of the building when I both felt and heard a click; I whirled around and looked and there on my hand was a handcuff, the other cuff being held by Katrina. I looked at the handcuff and looked at Katrina who was now wearing a smile that looked remarkably like a smirk. "We have been looking for you for some time, my colleagues and I." "I have him! Come ahead!"
A rustling in the bushes and there he was. My hunter. A bearded, husky guy . . . with a sword about three feet in length . . . frightening just to look at.
"We are about to make you famous, Davis. You will be known worldwide. My colleague in the car will be here in mere moments . . . with his camera. He will record this!" With that he grabbed my hair, held my head tightly and brought his knife to my throat.
"We will saw your head off. Slowly! He will videotape it and you will be on YouTube within the hour. Your body here . . . and your severed head dangling from my hand. That will teach the world that it is not wise to oppose the wise counsel of your President and argue against gun control. You see, Davis, if you have guns, we cannot conquer you. If you do not have guns . . . well . . . I think I make my point."

cussing world affairs, some with children playing in the distance – all of whom can proudly tell you who Will Rogers was. After all, with their favorite park named after him, well, it’s hard to forget his name. As one small child uttered enthusiastically: “My teacher said he was a great man who made us laugh with true storytelling. His name was Will Rogers!”
And in further gestures to help keep alive his memory for the American people, a beach in Pacific Palisades, California, was named after him. The mere mention of Will Rogers starts an animated discussion among beach-goers as to their favorite Rogers’ quote. On a recent survey, high on the list is this popular Will Rogers chestnut, “You never get a second chance to make a first good impression.” According to another public poll, this one rates high with senior citizens: “Eventually you reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.” (Compiled by the California State Park Services, via the resident Will Rogers historian.)
On November 4, 1948, the United States Post Office commissioned a Will Rogers 3-cent stamp. Then, in 1979, the U. S. Postal Service, by popular demand, issued yet another stamp, this time a 15-cent of Will Rogers, again on the “Performing Arts” stamp series. And, believe it or not, even the United States military got involved when the U. S. Navy was determined
to keep Will Rogers’ legacy alive when it officially commissioned and named its ballistic missile submarine, the USS Will Rogers, after the popular humorist. She was the only ship in the United States Navy to carry Will Rogers’ name.
When I was in the U.S. Navy stationed in Norfolk, Virginia awaiting our orders for deployment overseas, our favorite Will Rogers’ quote on the barracks wall was, “Everything is funny, as long as it’s happening to somebody else.” Trust me, in the military regime, that is perhaps more funny than in civilian life. And while on liberty in Hong Kong, my shipmates and I laughed out loud when we spotted a university student from England wearing a shirt with a Will Rogers quote upon it: “A fanatic is always the fellow who is on the opposite side.” The tributes to Will Rogers, even worldwide, appear to be endless.
And here on this side of the pond, you can find Will Rogers’ star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 6401 Hollywood Blvd. Imagine that. The length and power of his remembrance, over 80 years since his death, and the longevity of his mourning – to this day – is almost beyond the threshold of human reasoning. Such a deep, pervading love for a singular man whom most have never met in the flesh – is nothing short of staggering. Highways, turnpikes, as well as roadways and airports, and even hos-
pitals, continue to honor his namesake, abundantly, without shame.
Perhaps most touching is that every year since his death in 1935, more than 100 planes take to the skies and then slowly fly lower, and lower, until finally all 100 aircraft, with perfect synchronization, gently land oneby-one, onto the grassy runway near his childhood home. This aviation remembrance will continue this year, in 2018, marking its 83rd uninterrupted aerial tribute to America’s Favorite Son.
Will Rogers, who was a Freemason, joked about his own demise and his ensuing epitaph back in 1930, five years prior to his death, at Boston’s Tremont Temple. Rogers said at the time: “When I die, my epitaph or whatever you call those signs on gravestones is going to read: ‘I JOKED ABOUT EVERY PROMINENT MAN OF MY TIME, BUT I NEVER MET A MAN I DIDN’T LIKE.’ I am so proud of that I can hardly wait to die so it can be carved. And when you come to my grave you will find me sitting there, proudly reading it.” (Note: Will Rogers repeated this quote numerous times with some variations.) Will Rogers joked about everything in life. Even himself. Many of his quotes continue to be heard today as genuine classics, such as: “I am not a member of any organized party. I am a Democrat.” And this humorous observation which has a great quota of truth: “I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.”
All in life seemed fair game for William Penn Adair “Will” Rogers. He earned his stripes as the Cowboy Philosopher with such gems as, “Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.” Even his warnings are clothed in irony and, like the ancient bards, he brings tragedy-and-comedy closer in kinship: “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”
Yet he never strayed far from his rural roots, which like his lariat, encircled him and kept him hometied to his bare-knuckle vernacular: “There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” Despite his fame and world-travel, Will Rogers somehow was bypassed by time. His homespun way in life remained uncorrupted by the accumulated wealth and fame that came his way. As one comedian stated: “Will Rogers was America’s favorite, like no other American. But, he was completely free of any scandal during his lifetime – how can you trust such a man?” An unusual specimen by any measure, Will Rogers, somehow, kept his honest ways and Oklahoma upbringing pristine, and simple. He retained a certain childlike innocence, pure

U.S. Department of Agriculture. These horses are then cruelly shipped thousands of miles across our borders to be inhumanely slaughtered for their meat in Canada and Mexico. The Safeguard American Food Exports Act SAFE Act, HR 113, would permanently ban horse slaughter in this country and the shipping of horses abroad for that purpose. Many states have already banned horse slaughter largely due to its cruel nature and unpopularity.
Contact our Congressman, Rep. Darrell Issa to cosponsor this bill. We must pass this legislation to protect our horses from slaughter.

Time to join the 21st century
Many California state agencies are burdened with archaic procedures that often get in the way of efficient public service. That’s why I have introduced Assembly Bill 2087 (AB 2087), which will require all state agencies to establish modernization goals with specified objectives no later than January 1, 2020. The bill seeks to establish flexible, family friendly workplaces and efficient, streamlined processes in a way that will enhance cyber security, save money, reduce emissions, improve public transparency, encourage the use of cloud computing and other innovative new technologies, and enhance efficiency in all state operations. These technological innovations will help the legislative, judicial and executive branches operate more efficiently, encourage more women to participate in the workforce, and ensure greater transparency. They will also save taxpayer dollars. These innovations are long overdue for all state agencies, including the one I’m most familiar with, the State Legislature. By using innovative new technological capabilities such as telecomcamera or I-Phones will be accepted for the photography division. Cost is $10 per entry and two entries per person, per category will be accepted. The diagonal dimension including frame is not to exceed 54” and each entry must have a wire across the back to accommodate the hanging system. Cash and ribbons will be awarded to winning entries in each division. Entry forms available on-line at www.san-marcos.net or call (760)744-9000x3503 for more information.

Yang grew up in Chicago and began playing violin at the age of six. In 1999 she was a recipient of a Nicolò Gagliano violin from the Stradivari Society which enabled her to appear as a soloist and chamber musician all over the United States and Europe. Yang is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Oberlin College Conservatory.

As many of you know, trying to deal with the state’s cumbersome bureaucracy can be a time consuming, even maddening process. It’s surprising how our state, which sees itself as a national example to be emulated in so many other areas, can lag so badly when it comes to the use of technology in its daily operations. California is too big and diverse to allow antiquated procedures, which in some cases date back to the 19th century, to impede citizen involvement. California’s government needs to join the 21st century. Passage and implementation of AB 2087 will be a big step in that direction. Minority Floor Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried, and then she realized why.
Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow
It was for the same reason she had wondered why there was a football, a Frisbee, and two 12-packs of beer in the front seat.
A few minutes later, she found her own car parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into her own car and drove to the police station to report her mistake.
The Sergeant to whom she told the story couldn't stop laughing. He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale men were reporting a carjacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun. No charges were filed. Moral of the story?

In early 1944 MI-6 re-established Section IX, and Philby took a position there where he was able to alert the NKVD, the Russian secret service, about all British intelligence on the Soviets … including what the American OSS (forerunner of the CIA) had shared with the British about the Soviets.
Those Intriguing British Letters: M5 and M-6
More and more we see the security services of the United Kingdom’s monikers, MI-5 and MI-6, mentioned in news reports, but what do they mean and which does what for whom?
MI-5 (Military Intelligence, Section 5), is the United Kingdom's domestic counter-intelligence and security agency and is part of its intelligence machinery alongside the Secret Intelligence Service (MI-6). The service is directed to protect British parliamentary democracy and economic interests, and counter terrorism and espionage within the UK. The MI-5 is the British version of our FBI -- it investigates all domestic crimes.
The British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), more commonly known as MI-6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6), is the foreign intelligence agency of the British government -- a counterpart to our CIA. Think “James Bond.” Author and Bond creator Ian Fleming was a member of MI-6 during World War II. 5Severe damage was done by Philby in August 1945, when NKVD intelligence officer Konstantin Volkov tried to defect to the UK, offering the names of all Soviet agents working inside British intelligence services. Philby received the memo on Volkov's offer, and alerted the Soviets so they could arrest him. The Russian agent never made it to England. MI-6 operations against the USSR were extensively compromised by the fact the post-war Counter-Espionage Section, R5, was headed for two years by Philby. Although Philby's continued damage was mitigated for several years by his transfer as Head of Station in Turkey, he later was assigned as the MI-6 intelligence liaison officer at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. In that capacity he compromised a program of joint U.S.-UK paramilitary operations. As MI-6 investigators closed in on him, Philby escaped to Moscow in 1953, following his friends and fellow members of the "Cambridge Spy Ring," Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess.
During the Global War on Terror, MI-6 has exchanged information with the CIA. In the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, it is alleged, although not confirmed, that MI-6 conducted Operation Mass Appeal which was a campaign to plant stories about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the media. Evidently it worked. The U.S. attack on Iraq was for fear of WMDs. In November 2011, MI-6 helped capture Libyan leader Col. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. The top-secret mission, dubbed Operation X to disguise its purpose, used modern electronic intelligence (ELINT) technologies to bug the Libyan leader along with his friends and family.
Today, both MI-5 and MI-6 work closely with America’s FBI and CIA and are heavily involved in tracking down and capturing ISIS-influenced jihadists who have attacked and killed dozens of Brits and Americans through acts of domestic terror both in the UK and U.S. Tom Morrow's books are available at Amazon.com in soft-cover or via Kindle E-mail.

Local History Museum Celebrates Horse as Public Art – As part of the firstever staging of the world class Breeders’ Cup in Del Mar in late 2017, 20 life-size horse statues were placed around North County as public art. All are made of fiberglass. While not part of the official "Art of the Horse" event, the Valley Center History Museum announced that it has placed a one-of-a-kind bronze sculpture on permanent exhibition. It is by a noted artist who sculpts horses in bronze. Created by artist Dawn Hardy, the work titled "Waiting for Spring" reflects her embrace of two passions, horses and art, and was created in her own foundry. Many of her works are found in museums, and in corporate and private collections. She also has created trophies in the sports of racing and show jumping. Her sporting sculptures have appeared frequently on the covers of "The Chronicle of the Horse". The bronze at the Valley Center History Museum proved to be such a popular piece that it was moved to a more prominent place and will remain on permanent public display in the museum. It was donated to the museum by Peter and Susan Crotty of Valley Center. Along with the Dawn Hardy sculpture, museum visitors will also see an exhibition of more than a dozen thoroughbred horses with a local connection. The museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12noon to 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, visit vchistory.org or call 760.749.2993.

Hope Elementary School in Carlsbad Receives Toshiba $1K STEM Grant Award – Hope Elementary School at 3010 Tamarack Avenue, Carlsbad, recently received a $1,000 STEM Grant from the Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) for the second year in a row. These funds will support the 2nd Grade Science Program and the International Monarch Butterfly Way Station on-site at Hope Elementary School. Toshiba America Foundation’s grants fund projects are designed by individual classroom teachers. This “direct-to-teacher” approach brings immediate results. Teachers are able to change the way they teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects because the grant supports equipment for hands-on experiments and inquiry-based approaches to the curriculum. At TAF, we believe that STEM is a lot more fun than just reading a textbook. TAF grants provide teachers with the tools they need to be more effective educators. The grants make the classroom a more exciting place for both teachers and students. About TAF: Founded in 1990 with support from Toshiba Corporation and the Toshiba America Group Companies, Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) is a non-profit grant making organization dedicated to helping classroom teachers make STEM learning fun and successful for K to 12 students in U.S. schools. TAF grants support public and nonprofit private schools throughout the United States. For more information, visit: www.toshiba.com/taf.

Escondido Grand Avenue Changes
In anticipation of hundreds or even thousands of new condo type living units in downtown in the near future, Escondido city staff hosted workshops to gather information that will shape a vision for grand avenue infrastructure changes. The feedback was consolidated to arrive at a “Vision Plan” that incorporates widened sidewalks for more outdoor café seating and diagonal parking and Scholars Program, a 10-week paid undergraduate experience that integrates research and education, particularly for students from underrepresented groups or those facing challenges to academic achievement. Over 60 percent of last year’s participants identified as a first-generation college student, veteran, economically disadvantaged and/or nontraditional students. Participants develop research skills by working alongside faculty on projects addressing fundamental questions in science. Since 1999, the San Diego Foundation’s Science & Technology Program has granted more than $8 million to support scientists and engineers in San Diego. The program is funded in part by the Blasker-Rose-Miah and Reuben H. Fleet Endowment Funds at The San Diego Foundation. Pastor Tom Fry (Retired) Church of the Nazarene
I am studying the Gospel of Mark with a group of lively seniors. We had just finished the feeding of the 5,000 and were ready to look at the story of Jesus walking on the water. I asked the group what miracle they would like to do with Jesus. Respectfully, they stayed away from the healings, as if only Jesus could do those miracles. But feeding the multitudes and walking on water were both on the table. Almost unanimously, they chose walking on the water. The lone holdout was a fisherman who chose the time when Jesus filled the nets of Peter and the other disciples after they fished all night and come up empty.
Admit it, you’d like to walk on water. Just for the pure fun of it like Jesus and Mack in the book and movie, “The Shack.”
When Jesus comes near, Peter calls out for permission to walk on the water with Jesus. If you know much about Peter, this doesn’t surprise you.
He actually gets a good start, but then, The Message says, “He looked down at the waves churning around him, he lost his nerve and began to sink.” We live in a world of churning waves. Circumstances, we call them. Or distractions. As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked on the water. But when he looked away and focused on the churning waves, he lost his nerve. He was overcome by the circumstances, the swirling water, and he gave in to them. We can’t ignore the churnings and swirling of life. But when we allow them to distract us, we lose focus and we get sucked into them. It’s still good advice:
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace.”

While the City regularly holds drills to test emergency plans and ensure City of Vista employees are ready, residents should do the same. In the next several columns we will do a retrospective on how technology has affected us and our world. This is purely from our point of view and not an academic study in sociology. This is how we see technology changing the culture, attitudes and behavior of ourselves, customers, friends, family, community and the country. There are monumental differences in the way millennials (under 35), post millennials (Xgens or tweeners) and seniors (over 55) view the world and one another. We are going to explore some of those differences and the way they affect people in day to day relationships.
In 1917 the ten most valuable American companies where: US Steel, AT&T, Standard Oil, Bethlehem Steel, Armour, Swift, International Harvester, DuPont, Midvale Steel and US Rubber. Oil, steel, rubber and food. This was a country on the move, growing, building and expanding. Technology was focused upon those needs. In1967 Americas most valuable companies were: IBM, AT&T, Eastman Kodak, General Motors, Standard Oil, Texaco, Sears, GE, Polaroid, and Gulf Oil. IBM sold products to businesses not consumers, AT&T did both as did General Motors and the oil companies Eastman Kodak, Polaroid, GE and especially Sears were essentially consumer oriented. 2017 Americas most valuable companies were: Apple, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook,
Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson and Johnson, Exxon Mobile, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo. With the exception of Johnson and Johnson and Exxon, none of these companies produce products that you can touch or feel. Apple does sell products but they don’t make them, they are basically a sales rep for Chinese computer, phones and accessories. The other four of the first five sell services. Three of the second five companies also sell services not products. Over the past 100 years our most valuable companies have changed from ones that produce business and infrastructure related technology to those providing business and consumer services technology. Next week we’ll begin the discussion on how technology is forcing people to change in fundamental ways.
To set the tone for our discussion we take note of a couple of interesting if not startling facts. First, the “Knowledge Doubling Curve” posits that until 1900 human knowledge doubled approximately every century. By the end of World War II knowledge was doubling every 25 years. Today, on average human knowledge is doubling every 13 months. According to IBM, the build out of the “internet of things” will lead to the doubling of knowledge every 12 hours.
Second, looking at the top ten most valuable American companies in 1917, 1967 and 2017 reveals long term changes in our technological focus. stroke that caused him to lose sight in his right eye. Follow-up tests proved that it was not reversible.
That would have hit me hard. Arie just accepted it as a matter of face and goes on with his life, slowing his schedule only a bit. (If you’ve ever spent even a half day with Arie you know that it would be difficult for a 20-year-old to keep up with him . . he’s just go, go, go.) He can no longer drive at night and he has to slow down a bit, but knowing Arie that’s gonna be tough to follow doctor’s orders.
For those who don’t know Arie, he’s an immigrant from Holland who arrived here with his family and very little money. He and his family started and built Hollandia Dairy. He has since become a very, very successful businessman as well as a major philanthropist, supporting his community financially, but with service as well.
Meanwhile, another good friend, Larry Benson, owner of The Indian Store in Vista, sees the surgion this week. He has a growth in his left eye that needs attention.
Again, he’s the type that will bounce back and be puttering around his store very soon. (Store is perhaps not the appropriate word. His business is more like a museum, with artifacts of all types, Indian, rocks, gems, minerals. One could spend hours in The Indian Store, just browsing his inventory.)
Here’s hoping continued good healthfollows both Arie and Larry.
They are good people and we want them in our lives for many years to come.
