First time in Alabama. Ever.

On their final approach into Bir mingham's airport they looked out their window and were amazed at the landscape. Gently rolling hills and trees! Trees for as far as their eyes could see. The Paper - 760.747.7119

Upon landing and getting their rental car, they drove to Montgomery, about an hour and a half away - more trees. Looked to be mostly white pine. They would inquire and find out later the most of the trees were pine, some magnolia, some blackjack, some oak, but mostly, pine. They were in Alabama for the first time ever, to attend a

To do this, they treat journalists rather nicely.

First stop was the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery, Alabama. They had stayed in plush hotels before, but none more plush than this. Highly polished marble floors, beautiful tapestries on the walls, exciting and colorful works of art adorning the halls of the entire hotel. They had arrived late and missed the reception so they hunkered down in an oak paneled bar adjacent to

the restaurant and ordered a flatbread sandwich. This is apparently what they call a pizza in Alabama. It was delicious as was the Mojito the bartender prepared. A Mojito is a Cuban drink they had recently discovered, made of rum, sugar, lime, mint, and ice. Easy to drink, too easy . . . as in so easy to drink it was like drinking lemonade and one had to be careful not to overindulge. Even accidentally. They limited themselves to one. It was cold, wet, and tasty. Their room was comparable to a suite in other hotels. 300 thread count linens, more pillows than they knew what to do with, a colorful duvet (bed cover), comfortable easy chairs, large screen tv . . . all the comforts of home. In the morning they looked out of their window and saw a modern day town square. It was as though they were looking back in time, to the turn of the century.

Montgomery has rehabilitated the downtown area to look just as it must have looked back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The architecture was beautiful, the design of the town both utilitarian and pleasing to the eye as well. Hard by the downtown area was a gently flowing Alabama River. It was probably one of the most enjoyable, interesting and entertaining tours either of them had ever taken. They were placed in a linked caravan of golf carts and traversed the entire assembly plant. They were not required to walk (as is the case with the Mercedes tour) but were comfortable in their open-on-allsides cart. The lead driver was also the narrator and guided the journalists from the begin-

Studies indicate that up to 6,000 victims currently exist in San Diego County who are, on average, 16 years old. We hope to enlighten and inspire those who attend!”

District Attorney Summer Stephan has devoted her life to protecting children and families, providing justice to the most vulnerable, and is a national leader in the fight against human trafficking and sexual exploitation. “This event is intended to leverage the collaboration of all sectors in San Diego County as we call for an end to human trafficking,” said Stephan. “We must finish the battle to keep our children and adults from getting pulled into the exploitation and enslavement of mind, body and soul that is human trafficking. We’re proud to join PLNU, Rotary, the County Office of Education and the many dedicated partners and service providers that have been working for years to make San Diego the national standard on how to prioritize and fight to eliminate human trafficking. It happens that I have a great many nurses who are friends. If you don’t have a nurse for a friend, go find one. They’ll brighten your life and you just may brighten theirs.

How nurses do it is beyond me. They run, not walk, from patient to patient . . . constantly on the go. Often giving up lunch breaks and/or bathroom breaks to tend to their patients.

Yet they always have that ready smile, that cheery voice, and are able to handle any medical crisis no matter how severe. I love ‘em! Every single one of ‘em! Most nurses are women but there are some fantastic male nurses as well. It’s a marvelous profession

under the bus -- again -- by promising, then scrapping plans to improve these very roadways.

Even the American Society of Civil Engineering gave California only a "C" grade, calling such neglect: "significantly underfunded for a long time." SANDAG's broken promises add insult to injury: they think North San Diego residents are TOO STUPID & WITH SHORT MEMORIES so promises can be broken & no one will blow the whistle. No more!

I applaud Levin, Desmond, and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear in a (bipartisan) effort to rectify things. Some individual(s) from SANDAG should have served prison time for legal malfeasance -- he/they have since jumped ship and left!

We thank The Paper and editor/publisher Lyle E. Davis for giving us a unified voice against such corruption. And also for entertaining/enlightening us with factual, historical cover stories of our North San Diego County cultural roots, such as with the splendid Lawrence Welk cover story (2/10.22), truly a mesmerizing insightful masterpiece by Friedrich Gomez! -Emailed from Kenneth Warren family & friends, Oceanside & Vista. Thank Heavens!

So relieved to see the AB1400 bill was defeated! Major Disaster averted! As discussed in Letters to the Editor of The Paper (1/27/22 issue) I agree with reader Caroline Douglas as well as Assemblywoman Marie Waldron (75th District) that the bill would have eliminated Medicare for seniors & would have negatively impacted nearly 40 million Californian with a shabby state-run healthcare system! The fatal mistake that politicos often make is that the public is not watching their every step (which needs to be done). Thanks to Waldron leading the charge, the bill, as she phrased it "crashed and burned" in the overwhelming face of opposition NOT ONLY from healthcare entities BUT everyday citizens like you and me! Citizens MUST stay involved, and STAY AWARE of such shenanigans! And thanks to the Editor of The Paper, Lyle E. Davis, for giving us the forum (Letters to the Editor) to invoke our right to speak up against bad politics! And by the way Mr. Davis, your Lawrence Welk cover story was truly inspiring of how the average American can still persist and fight against seemingly impossible odds in life and STILL find success! Beautiful storyline. Truly inspiring to us all.

legs are sore and it’s hard to get things done. This convention was dead solid perfect.

Now came the “Fam Trips.” A Fam(iliarization) Trip is an experience where the journalists get to visit facilities, restaurants, resorts, historical areas, and the like, so that they might report back to their readers or viewers. We chose to experience the Montgomery Bon Apetit Tour. We were given directions to a very small but chic restaurant, located on the second floor of a building that was probably 100 years old. The walls were solid brick; it used to be an old storeroom but had been converted to a lovely, intimate dining locations. A buffet table offered all kinds of Southern cuisine, including jambalaya, red beans and rice, collard greens, specially prepareed grits, plenty of food to fill most any gourmand. He decided the food was a bit too spicy for him and allowed as how he probably would not order Cajun food in the future. No reflection on the chef or the restaurant . . . it was simply a matter of taste for a certain cuisine. She seemed to enjoy her dinner. There was plenty of wine to accompany the meal and they were given tickets to redeem for mixed drinks at another night spot between this restaurant and the hotel. Being tired, probably as much due to the time zone chance as the busy day they had, they redeemed only one drink each, giving the other tickets to newly found friends.

The next morning they were off, via van, for Birmingham, about an hour and half drive north of Montgomery. First, they had to return a rental car to Enterprise. Some difficulty ensued in returning the rental car, but was accomplished only after an unpleasant experience. They decided they’d think long and hard before renting from Enterprise again. Once that was resolved, onward to Birmingham. En route, they noticed a sign on the right side of the road. He laughed out loud when he saw it. She merely smiled.

The Rising Cost of Keeping Warm

The electric bills just keep going up, and up. California energy costs have been high for years, even before the recent spikes. Now it’s getting much worse. Inflation nationwide is out of control, with prices rising at the fastest rate in 40 years. In California, housing is beyond reach for many, gas prices/taxes are the nation’s highest, and our overall tax rates far exceed national norms. Thousands have been priced out of California, with many fleeing the state just to make a living. Energy prices are a big factor, since Californians are charged much higher rates than the rest of the nation -- our costs here locally are the country’s highest In many ways, our electric rates are divorced from the actual cost of providing electricity, saddled with reducing wildfire risk, with subsidies for programs such as building electrification, meeting carbon neutrality goals and other public programs not directly related to providing electricity. The rising cost of natural gas, used to produce most of our electricity, is another major factor. As a result, our electricity costs are often two or three times higher than the actual cost to produce and distribute electricity.

Unfortunately, middle and lower income ratepayers bear a disproportionate share of this heavy burden.

I have heard from many constituents about these rate increases. Though the Legislature does not set electricity rates, I share the same concerns. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which was created by voters over 100 years ago to oversee utilities, railroads, and other “natural monopolies,” is charged with setting utility rates.

Since the rising cost of energy has forced so many to choose between feeding their families and keeping them warm, I am calling upon the CPUC to review policies and take a closer look at how their decisions impact the lives of millions. Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R-Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

The Covid 19 two-year anniversary is upon us, now what?

With over 900,000 Americans and over 4,800 people locally who died with Covid, it brought tragedy and hopelessness that left a hole in our lives that will never be filled. We’ve seen challenges with child development as kids lag with two years of modified or hybrid school. Behavioral health issues increased dramatically while drug overdoses spiked.

It’s very important we take a step back and learn from this historically difficult time.

From this tragic, front of mind pandemic, there is a cumulative impact that touches so many of us. The responsible precautions we exercised, due to covid, separated us. And for the better part of two years, families, friends and neighbors have been both physically and emotionally separated.

Learning from the recent past, I propose we move forward with a healthy respect. A healthy respect for the virus and its variants; And, most importantly, a healthy respect for each other. As a blueprint for living with the

virus evolves, it is time for us to put physical and emotional distances behind us and come together, on the path of civility.

Earlier this week, the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to request the State’s Department of Public Health for a “safe and responsible path'' toward phasing out pandemic-related mask requirements for school children from kindergarten through 12th grade. And while in the recent past we board members have not always seen eye to eye, this is a day and a goal we all wanted.

At this point, the separation that has occurred these past two years is what concerns me more than anything. PROBLEM SOLVED

Q: I booked a prepaid, nonrefundable rental car through Hotwire recently. Then, a few days later I booked another car for the same dates by mistake. I tried to cancel one of the bookings and request a refund. Hotwire refuses. Obviously, I can't drive two cars at the same time. Their system shouldn't allow someone to double book. I have used Hotwire for many years. Before this, I was a satisfied customer. Can you help me get my $178 back? -- Robert Sharp, Swampscott, Mass. A: You made two prepaid, nonrefundable car rental reservations through Hotwire. And they are, as you say, prepaid and nonrefundable. As a regular user of Hotwire, you should have known that.

But just how nonrefundable is nonrefundable? Well, I've talked to insiders at opaque sites like Hotwire, and here's what they tell me: If you make an honest mistake when you book through the site and call right away, they can work with you to cancel the overlapping reservation. But the longer you wait, the harder it gets to fix something like this. And yes -- by nonrefundable, they really mean nonrefundable. Well, mostly.

Still, I think Hotwire should have a system to at least warn you that you're about to make a double booking. And it looks like Hotwire didn't send you a confirmation for your first reservation. If it had sent you one, this would be a borderline case that I couldn't have advocated. But it looks like a few things went wrong on Hotwire's side, too.

Look, plans change. It would be nice to see the travel industry adopt a 24hour rule so that customers like you could fix problems like these. If everyone treated each other like travel companies treated you after a nonrefundable purchase, imagine what the buying experience would be like. No returns on anything, ever. Buyer's remorse would become a national pastime. I reviewed the email correspondence between you and Hotwire. Everything looked promising for getting a refund. A representative told you not to worry, agreeing that your second booking was a "mistake." He added that Hotwire just needed to "verify" the refund through your car rental company.

Then you received bad news: "We can only process a refund for the other reservation if one of them was processed within an hour. But it shows here that the second reservation was booked after a few days."

If Hotwire had told you up front about that, then you wouldn't have gotten your hopes up.

You probably already know this, but next time, you might want to avoid a nonrefundable reservation. You can find plenty of good deals directly through a car rental agency or on a site that sells refundable reservations,

like Hotwire's sister site, Expedia.

I think a brief, polite appeal to a Hotwire executive might have also worked for you. I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the < a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/expedia-customer-service-contacts/">Expedia contacts</a> on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. As I mentioned, this is a borderline case. You should have paid closer attention to your reservation and its strict terms. As an experienced Hotwire customer, you already knew that. At the same time, Hotwire didn't warn you about the double booking, it strongly suggested it could get you a refund and then let you down. I feel there's a case for at least a goodwill refund here.

I contacted Hotwire on your behalf, asking it to review your case. A representative responded quickly. "I just wanted to close the loop and let you know that we’ve canceled the double booking and issued a HotDollar credit for the second booking Mr. Sharp made in the amount of $178," a representative told me. That's a generous resolution.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

History from the Middle of the 20th Century

By the time I reached my teen-age years it was 1953. It was a pivotal year in many respects. Among the many noteworthy events taking place was on Jan. 20, 1953. Dwight D. Eisenhower began his first term in the White House, and what followed marked the beginning of historic events, matched with innovation that would take us well into the rest of the century.

Q: I recently made a reservation to stay at the TownePlace Suites New York/Chelsea at a rate of $416 (for two nights). The hotel notified me that it would not be open when I arrived.

A representative said they could honor my reservation at the SpringHill Suites Times Square South and that I should contact the hotel. I tried calling the hotel directly, but I got cut off multiple times. So I called Marriott Customer Service to see if they could help. They contacted the SpringHill Suites, which told them to have me send an email with my confirmation information, and they would honor the rate. I also received an email from the TownePlace Suites to send yet another email to another email address if I wanted to move my reservation to The Hub Times Square. I followed these directions.

After not hearing back from either hotel, I called Marriott customer service again a few days later. That representative once again contacted the SpringHill Suites, which told me to send yet another email -- this time to a different email address -- and that I would hear back by the end of the day. I didn't. At this point, I have made more

In 1953, black & white television sets were readily available and for sale at an affordable price. Our General Electric 21-inch TV set cost my Dad about $425. As a meatcutter, he had to sell a lot of hamburger to pay for it.

On Oct. 31, NBC telecast the first fullcolor program, “Carmen.” Color TV sets, however, weren’t available for general sale until the next year. When they did become available in 1954, you could buy a Westinghouse 17-inch compatible color TV for $1,150. (“Compatible meant it worked on both black & white as well as color ... if you could afford it). The picture wasn’t very good. There were five national TV networks: NBC, CBS, ABC, Dumont, and the Westinghouse Network. Dumont’s toprated programming was “Captain Video” which was popular fare weeknights after school, and “Wrestling from Chicago” on Saturday night with Jack Brickhouse.

The year 1953 marked the 50th anniversary of Henry Ford’s automotive production. His cars led the way for a number of companies competing for the American road. My first car was a 1953 Ford Custom 2-door sedan, although I didn’t actually take the wheel of that wonderful chariot until 1958. On March 5, 1953, the Soviet Union’s iron dictator Joseph Stalin died of a stroke. The world took a sigh of relief because his goal was to take over the world. With Stalin’s death the threat of a Russian bomb being dropped on America had been a worry for all of us. We thought the threat was over … it only got worse.

As young people, our one singular worry was contracting Polio. But, 1953, brought an end to that worry when Dr. Jonas Salk introduced his life-saving, miracle vaccine. By the end of 1955, most everyone, in particular children, received the vaccine and the disease all but disappeared ... at least from the worry of most of us. The disease has nearly been eradicated around the globe.

North Korea released 64 American POWs on April 21 and three months later there was a cease-fire agreement signed calling a halt to the Korean War. Ironically, 23 U.S. soldiers refused repatriation, but all eventually returned to the United States. More than 25,000 Americans died in battle during the three-year conflict. On May 4, of that year author Ernest Hemmingway won a Pulitizer for his novel, “The Old Man and the Sea.” On May 18, Aviatrix Jackie Cochran became the world’s first woman to break the sound barrier. Six days later

The “Ozzie & Harriet Show” was the most popular TV program of all, but it wasn’t long before “I Love Lucy” took over the top spot in the ratings and would remain there for a number of years.

One of the pieces of history from 1953 that continues to this day was the film “The Wild One,” starring Marlon Brando. It depicted a Fourth of July 1947 weekend invasion when a gang of motorcylists raised havoc in the small California town of Hollister. To this day ‘cylist riders often are dubbed “The Wild One” in reference to that movie. Of the many movies Brando made, that film will always be one of his most memorable. The ’53 Brando movie perpetuated motorcycle gangs in general such as the “Hell’s Angels.” Another tag was/is “Bronson,” referencing a popular TV show of the early ‘60s, starring Michael Parks. The year 1953 was a big year for the music … Kay Starr, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Percy Faith, among the many. But, a year later a former disc jockey by the name of Bill Haley and his band, the Comets, recorded “Rock Around the Clock.” The Country and Western musician was looking for a “new sound” and settled upon what he dubbed “rock ‘n’ roll.” It wouldn’t be until 1955, before Haley’s recording broke onto the pop charts as the first “rock” song. Haley reportedly adopted the rhythmic beat from AfricanAmerican musicians which had been playing the rock sound for several years. Today, guitarist Chuck Berry is considered one of the true pioneers of the ‘rock’ sound. 1953 – it was a very good year!

The Pastor Says...

makes things difficult. But this law of love can go a long way. Of course, this truth can’t be kept inside churches and places of worship. It has to reach our homes, businesses, neighborhoods, schools and our nation.

I truly like Escondido Mayor Paul "Mac" McNamara, but recently I had to answer a lot of questions from various peers, neighbors, coworkers, family members, and just about everyone on social media, but yesterday was the final straw: our kids at the dinner table asked: "Mom and Dad, is it okay to let criminals break the law?" My husband and I just looked at each other. "Why would you kids say that?" my husband asked. I jumped in: "Of course not! All crimes should be reported so that bad people cannot continue to hurt other innocent people, especially little children, such as yourselves." Our kids went on to say that they had heard other parents and adults say that Escondido Mayor McNamara and his wife said it was okay to let criminals go free without even trying to catch them. My husband and I know this question is alive and well on social media chats and now even our school children are confused, as are adults.

NBC-7 News confirmed that Mayor McNamara's wife was attacked back on Dec. 29 by an unknown assailant as she was taking the trash to the curb between 5 and 7 p.m. and left unconscious. The next day Mrs. McNamara had to be taken to the emergency room at the hospital. (Google the entire newscast on NBC-7) NBC-7 news wanted to know why the attack wasn't shared with the general public for safety precautions as is required, especially since the criminal was still at large? Escondido Police were notified but strangely: "The victim said she did not want the police to investigate the crime!" Social media chats exploded! No witnesses, no evidence from surveillance cameras -- nothing! When approached by news crews, McNamara said he agrees with his wife's wishes to not investigate the crime! Is it truly time for a new mayor of Escondido? Police investigated anyway and said the still-atlarge criminal was no longer a threat? Huh? If the criminal was never caught and/or identified, then how can the EPD confirm the criminal is no longer a threat (unless as one person opined on the internet, this was a domestic abuse issue)? Otherwise, the EPD and Mayor are amazing mind-readers! This is a scandal and a total breakdown of law-and-order & complete lack of transparency. Children aren't the only ones confused and receiving dangerous mixed-signals from our trusted EPD and City Hall. -Caroline Douglas, family & friends, North San Diego Inland Region.

Pastor Sam Brumit Mission 316, San Marcos A solution to so much division

Everyone can choose to practice love. Personal transformation is critical and this starts from the inside out. It’s why Jesus said “you must be born again”. To those who believe it, love is a decision; an act of the will.

Any of us who have been around awhile might be tempted to say “I’ve never lived in a time like this – where people are so divided by so many things. Even legislation has been enacted to try to change behavior.

To anyone who understands this “royal law”, the practice of it can be contagious and love can spread. If you practice it from the inside out, it can make a difference in someone’s life. And that may spread. It could lead to a spiritual revolution.

Our selfishness and prideful nature

Mission 316 Church in San Marcos exists to spread such love. We meet at 10 AM on Sundays at the Community Center at 3 Civic Center Drive, San Marcos CA 92069 (directly across from the San Marcos Library). Everyone is warmly invited to attend.

I think there is a simpler approach. Jesus boiled life and law down to something pretty simple… Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourselves. I have to believe that His counsel would make healing the division among us a whole lot doable. No current law could ever do that.

Be Emergen cy Ready Now

The City is committed to keeping the community safe, especially during an emergency.

In addition to Vista’s first responders, the City regularly holds drills to test emergency plans and to ensure all our City of Vista employees are ready. Our residents should also be prepared. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance on what you will do in different disaster situations. The County of San Diego created an emergency app to better prepare and inform residents about emergencies and to provide tools needed to plan, prepare, and respond. Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

We have a number of difficult challenges that we face as a community and region, e.g., homelessness, increased drug use and its associated impact on crime, rising costs, etc. These are complex issues with no simple answers no matter what someone says on social media. And to make it more challenging, we have laws that restrict our actions, and the COVID pandemic hasn’t helped either. In fact, I would say it has exacerbated the problems. Yet, there are many smart and good people who are faithfully in the trenches trying to solve or minimize the influence these issues have on our daily lives. But even knowing there are people fighting the good fight, I will freely admit it can be very frustrating at times. But every once in a while, you get to do something or participate in something that just lifts your spirits. I did the other day. I went to the Escondido Girls Softball League opening night. It was exciting and fun to see and experience all the young players enthusiasm for the upcoming season. As importantly, the parent/supporting family turnout and participation was tremendous. It was a faith restoring event. You couldn’t be there and not feel that despite all our difficult challenges, none of them will beat us. Well done and thank you to the Escondido Girls Softball League.

was self assured, long winded and always “all in” on some harebrained “get rich scheme.” The dry wit of his long suffering and practical wife played a perfect counterpoint to Fibbers misadventures. Fibber McGee was the prototype for generations of flawed but lovable male characters like Carroll O’Conner as Archie Bunker in “All in The Family”, Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden in “The Honeymooners” and William Bendix as Chester Riley in “The Life of Riley”.

You’re probably familiar with this catch phrase, but unless you were born before 1950, you probably never actually heard “Molly” use it to chastise “Fibber” on America’s all-time most popular radio sitcom “Fibber McGee and Molly.” With real life married couple Jim and Marian Jordan playing the lead roles, the show ran from 1935 through1956. The McGees had no apparent employment. All day long a steady stream of hilarious home town characters rang the doorbell at 79 Wistful Vista and interacted with the mercurial Fibber and his down to earth wife Molly. Fibber

class courses on 11 sites, 468 holes of golf at 11 sites spread across the state, all with startling beauty. Many are in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains (in the northern part of Alabama), with great scenery and fairways that rise and roll, fall, and rise again. State officials describe the Trail as one that “stretches from the rolling hills of northern and central Alabama to the wetlands and woods near the Gulf Coast. Each of the eleven stops on the Trail is within a two-hour drive of the course closest to it, and each is within 15 minutes of a major interstate.”

Greens fees on the Trail courses average around $50. All of the Resort Collection Hotels on the Trail carry the Marriott or Renaissance flags. Four of the eight hotels have the coveted AAA Four Diamond rating.

Both Montgomery and Birmingham offered historical tours of the battlegrounds of civil rights.

We focus on Fibber McGee and Molly this week, not because we feel any kinship to Fibber and Molly. I’m certain that I am nothing like the bombastic, loudmouth Fibber McGee although Nome, like Molly, can by a bit snarky at times. The real similarity between that radio show and everyday life here at the Computer Factory lies in the streaming Americana that enriches our daily lives.

Fibber McGee and Molly had a recurring cast of about twenty- five regular characters that represented stereotypes in small town America. There was Throckmorton Gildersleve, the pompous next door neighbor, the “old timer” a cranky hard of hearing senior citizen, Tini a precocious six year who ended most of her sentences with “I betcha”. There was Abigail Uppington, the snooty society matron, Foggy Williams local weatherman, Ole Svenson AKA Mr. Peavy, Mayor LaTrivia, boy

They opted to continue on the Bon Apetit tour and see what the Birmingham area had to offer in the way of vicuals and libations. They came away impressed.

Ozan Vineyard and Cellars has over 2000 vines planted at Ozan with plans for expansion. Lovely small winery with lovable owners. One frustration here is there peach wine, which is done perfectly, is not able to be shipped to California. From here, the tour went to the Vizzini Farms Winery. They make wines from the finest Alabama and West Coast Vinifera grapes. The owner, Frank Vizzini, gave a detailed description of how wine is made. Our traveling couple was so impressed with both the Chocolate-Raspberry Merlot, and the Black raspberry/Merlot (Paulina) that they bought a case, half and half. He said, “that free wine tasting stop cost me $224.” (But he was pleased to pay it. It’s a great wine).

Crazy Alice Darling and Wally Wimple a soft spoken doormat. These and a dozen other characters of every age, race and persuasion interacted hilariously with the excitable Fibber and his laid back wife Molly. There was never a hint of hatred or rancor. There were problems and differences of opinions and plenty of emotion but the sense of community won out in the end. All was peace and love on Wistful Vista. While Fibber and Molly had twenty five stereotyped characters to represent Americana, we have over ten thousand examples of the real deal. We don’t have stereotypes. Each of our customers is a unique and important experience, like no other. When we opened The Computer Factory in the 1990s our staff called me “The Computer Nazi”, a reference to the Seinfeld TV show’s “Soup Nazi”. The cartoon pictured

The final winery stop was Morgan Creek Vineyards – a family owned and operated vineyard which specializes in Southern varietals of wines ranging from a sweet apple to a dry red Muscatine.

After a return to the hotel to freshen up, the trip’s masterpiece was presented. One does not tend to think of Alabama as a location where you would find fine dining.

One would be dead wrong in that thinking. Probably some of the finest dining they had ever enjoyed was found at Highland’s Bar & Grill, owned and operated by Chef Frank Stitt. They have dined in some of the finest restaurants in the world. None were finer than the Highland’s Bar and Grill.

From the pages of Gourmet Magazine: “W hen we dream about an American restaurant, it looks and smells a lot like Highlands Bar & Grill: a gleaming , big-city place with the precise butter glow of our favorite Parisian bistros”.

Since those days I’ve learned to shut up and listen. It is amazing how much you can learn with your mouth closed. By learning to listen I found that people were a lot smarter and more interesting than I had realized. For me it was a breakthrough, Nome was simply relieved I’d finally come to my senses.

So we have it even better than Fibber and Molly. Not only do we get to meet and interact with our cast of characters and old friends every day, but each day also brings us new and interesting characters and friends.

And I also find it hard to believe that Marriott customer service can’t rebook me without me sending emails -- which don’t get answered -- to multiple hotels.

My trip is in less than a week. At this point, not only am I going to have to cancel my trip, but I am seriously considering rethinking my allegiance to Marriott. -Cindy Tomlinson, Fairfax, Va. A: Marriott should have honored your reservation. It looks like the hotel experienced some construction delays that affected your stay at the original hotel in November. It's always a good idea to confirm that your the hotel is actually open, especially as the pandemic winds down. There have been a lot of hotel closures during the last two years.

When a hotel can't accommodate you, it will typically send you to a comparable hotel and cover one night's lodging as a gesture of goodwill. So why did Marriott stall on that industry-standard promise? Here's what I think happened. You planned to be in town to meet up with a friend who had a reservation at a nearby hotel. The two alternative hotels Marriott offered were far away from the hotel where your friend had a reservation. So you tried to make two reservations -- one for you, one for your friend, at one of the new properties. That may have confused Marriott, which delayed its response. You can avoid a hotel problem like this by staying at an already-opened property. The only way to know is to call or watch for the "new" tag on the property description. If you booked through a travel agent, then that person would also be able to keep you informed.

I think a brief, polite email to Marriott's customer service contacts might have helped. It's clear the company was fumbling around with your request. I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/marriott-contactdetails/">Marriott execs</a> on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. I contacted Marriott on your behalf. It reached out and offered to rebook you, but not your friend.
