It is a grisly subject matter, to be sure. But how the thirteen apostles -- yes, there were thirteen, not twelve -- died is a most interesting question, nonetheless, especially in light of the fact that few people actually know the answers. THE ORIGINAL TWELVE, PLUS ONE REPLACEMENT. For the record, the thirteenth disciple was Matthias (Hebrew transliteration: Mattityahu), not to be confused with the apostle Matthew, a.k.a. Levi. Matthias was chosen by the remaining eleven after Judas Iscariot committed suicide by hanging himself after being overcome with personal guilt over betraying Jesus (Yeshua), known as the Christ, for thirty pieces of silver.

A RAGGLE-TAGGLE GROUP WITH QUESTIONABLE ETHICS. The original disciples who lived, followed, ate, and slept in the company of the historical Jesus were a most unlikely assemblage of human flesh: crude fishermen, a corrupt tax collector, simple

peasants and common tradesmen, all with questionable moral and ethical backgrounds.

Simply put, these original followers were – at best – a checkered group, even by the standards of their own day. A raggle-taggle compilation whose collective infidelity is well-known to biblical and secular scholars, alike. Their unofficial leader, Simon Peter (whom Jesus called ‘The Rock’), was anything but a rock when his faith was uprooted three times -- along with his integrity -- when Peter cowered

and quickly denied to his accusers that he had any affiliation with the Nazarene, Jesus -- not once -- but his denial was three times in succession within the span of thirty minutes.

Almost the entire group of disciples would eventually scatter, like chaff in the wind, when the ninth hour arrived for their Rabbi Jesus’ ignominious crucifixion at Calvary. MYSTERIOUS PHENOMENON. However, this period of vacillation

and tenuous loyalty was later replaced by a mysterious attribute of unwavering faith – but only after the death of their teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, who had promised to send them a ‘comforter’ (or Holy Spirit) to strengthen and solidify their faith after his earthly departure. Whether this theological notion was a reality which came into play is impossible to prove or disprove; yet after Jesus’ death on the cross, the abandoned group, remarkably, for their remaining years – never faltered again -- even unto abominable torture and horrific death. HORRIFIC METHODS OF DEATH FOR THE APOSTLES. How these apostles, individually, met their fate is not fodder for the weak or timid of heart. Historically, the methodology and bloodletting covered a wide range of torture, including being skinned alive, sawed into pieces, boiled, burned, swords plunged into them, bodies pierced-through from flying arrows, hideous scourging methods combined with unusual crucifixions, bodies hacked into pieces, stoned to death, and heads decapitated from their bodies. Sometimes there were was a combination of torture which lasted agonizing days before death came.

A woman stopped by, unannounced, at her son's house. She knocked on the door then immediately walked in. She was shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, naked. Soft music was playing, and the aroma of perfume filled the room. "What are you doing?!" she asked.

"I'm waiting for Mike to come home from work," the daughter-in-law answered.

"But you're naked!" the mother-inlaw exclaimed. "This is my love dress," the daughter-in-law explained. "Love dress? But you're naked!"

unimaginable, protracted suffering and excruciating painful death could have been avoided entirely, if only they had recanted their religious views. Yet, all of them -- did not.

In absolute truth, and by the strictures of historical evidence, there is no authentic, reliable source – outside of the Christian Bible – which chronicles the deaths of the original disciples. The only apostle whose death is actually recorded in the New Testament Bible, is James, the son of Zebedee, a.k.a. James the Greater (Acts 12:1-19). The deaths of all the remaining apostles are only cited through church tradition and apocryphal writings which remain unreliable sources not formally accepted as being sacred (or canonical) by mainstream Christology.

Nevertheless, here is an enumeration of each apostle’s death, according to church tradition and nonScriptural sources. SIMON PETER. By trade, Peter was a fisherman. He was a married man whose wife would, eventually, accompany him on his missionary journeys (1 Corinthians 9:5). His marriage is well acknowledged by mainstream Christian and Jewish scholars (as well as non-Christian antiquity scholars). However, this is an extremely sensitive and incendiary viewpoint with some quarters

excites him to no end. Every time he sees me in this dress, he instantly becomes romantic. He can't get enough of me."

The mother-in-law left. When she got home, she undressed, showered, put on her best perfume, dimmed the lights, put on a romantic CD, and lay on the couch, waiting for her husband to arrive. Finally, her husband came home. He walked in and saw her lying there so provocatively. "What are you doing?" he asked.

"This is my love dress," she whispered sensually.

"Need's ironing," he said. "What's for dinner?"

He never heard the gunshot. •••• A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, 'This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.' The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, 'Which do you want, Dan?' The boy takes the quarters and leaves the dollar. 'What did I tell you?' said the barber. 'That kid never learns!' Later, when the customer leaves, he

of the orthodox Catholic faith, which vehemently challenges that he was a married man, despite what is clearly found in Matthew 8:14 (“When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-inlaw lying in bed with a fever.”)

Simon Peter, who was appointed leader of his own group of neophyte followers, was eventually martyred in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. He was sentenced to death for his rebellious religious views. The autocracy at the time pronounced Simon’s method of execution to be by crucifixion, involving a slow, painful, tortuous death. Peter’s only request was shockingly unconventional, even for his turbulent, unpredictable era. Simon voiced that he was unworthy to be associated with his Messiah’s death of crucifixion and, therefore, only asked that he be crucified upside down. Few civilities were respected by the ancient, barbaric Romans. But courage was a brute attribute which even the Roman legionnaires, centurions and gladiators openly admired.

The Romans, allegedly, obliged and Simon Peter’s inner courage remained unbroken. His last breath was gasped with his head facing, lifeless, in the downward position. Remarkably, he never denounced his Christian beliefs even though such a retraction would have spared

The boy licked his cone and replied, 'Because the day I take the dollar, the game's over!' •••• An Irishman goes into the confessional box after years of being away from the Church. Inside he finds a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap. On one wall there's a row of decanters with fine Irish whiskey and Waterford crystal glasses. On the other wall is a dazzling array of the finest cigars and chocolates. Then the priest comes in.

"Father, forgive me, for it's been a very long time since I've been to confession, but I must first admit that the confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be." The priest replies: "Get out, you moron, you're on my side!" •••• A Minnesota farmer named Ole had a car accident. He was hit by a truck owned by the Eversweet Company.

his life.

ANDREW. According to non-biblical ancient sources all the way up to the 15th-century, such as with the well-respected religious historian, Dorman Newman, the apostle Andrew (the brother of Simon Peter, mentioned above), met his most painful demise while visiting Patras, in Western Greece, in the year 69 A. D. As history retraces the events, Andrew engaged in long heated religious debates with the Roman proconsul, named Aegeates. These ongoing debates would prove to be his undoing. Andrew’s immovable religious views finally wore-down Aegeates’ patience. Aegeates had repeatedly tried to convince the apostle Andrew to give up Christianity, but to no avail. Exasperated, the Roman proconsul finally gave Andrew an ultimatum: relinquish his Christian viewpoints or face a slow torture and protracted execution. Andrew was eventually scourged, then placed on an Xshaped wooden cross. He was tied (rather than nailed to a cross) so that he would suffer for a longer period of time before dying. The scourging process was typical of the times, which the apostle Andrew suffered under.

According to Dr. William D. Edwards, M.D. (Department of Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in

Rochester, Minnesota), the disciple Andrew’s scourging would have involved, in Dr. Edwards’ own words: “Leather thongs and sheep bones which would cut into the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock. The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim (in this case, the apostle Andrew) would survive on his X-shaped wooden cross.” After scourging, the victim was usually verbally taunted. The agony and suffering endured a full two days before Andrew succumbed to death. Through it all, he never recanted his religious views which would have saved him.

BARTHOLOMEW. A.k.a. Nathanael, was an apostle who ventured into various countries, including India, where he continued translating the Gospel of Matthew. He was eventually challenged for his beliefs and many cultivated a hatred towards his immovable, sustained religious views. The apostle Bartholomew’s death is recorded as being at the hands of “impatient idolaters.” He would, eventually,

be brutally beaten. Then skinned alive which was a slow and terrifying process impossible to imagine today. After being physically bludgeoned, and then skinned (while still alive), Bartholomew was finally beheaded. Throughout the long, entire torture process – incredibly – he never denied or succumbed to admitting that his religious beliefs were false, which would have saved him.

THOMAS. The apostle Thomas was known for his skepticism which would, in time, result in his sobriquet, “The Doubting Thomas,” which survives to this day. This disciple met his death brutally and directly. While preaching in Greece and India he angered religious authorities who martyred him by running him through with a spear. His agonizing death came slowly. His body pierced completely through with a large spear, Thomas suffered for the longest time before he was overcome by death. To the end, he never denied the validity of his preaching as a chosen apostle and his apostolic duty, even if it meant dying for his beliefs.

MATTHEW. A.k.a. Levi, was a dishonest publican (tax collector) whom biblical scholars say was driven by greed. Tax collectors were notoriously corrupt and greatly hated by the Jewish people in ancient times. In this regard, as a

collective people, the Jews had no historical equal in despising tax collectors who represented the cruel and despotic Roman rulers who enslaved them as a people. As scholars quickly note: “Of all the nations of the world, the ancient Jews were the most vigorous haters of tax collectors.”

Even the Pharisees viewed tax collectors as enemies to be shunned.

After becoming reformed as an apostle, Matthew would come to write the Gospel which bears his name. Matthew was eventually martyred in Ethiopia. He was, allegedly, stabbed in the back by a swordsman sent by King Hertacus. King Hertacus was offended by Matthew criticizing the king’s lack of morality. Matthew could have easily avoided such a painful death by choosing not to criticize wrongdoing by King Hertacus.

Instead, Matthew chose the threat of death over ignoring his call as an apostle.

MATTHIAS. Matthias is not to be confused with Matthew (a.k.a. Levi), mentioned above. Matthias was, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the disciple chosen to replace Judas Iscariot, following Iscariot’s suicide by hanging. Though Matthias was a replacement for Judas Iscariot, Matthias had been in association with the Christian Jesus from the time of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist at the river Jordan. Many scholars

believe Matthias was an earlier disciple of John the Baptist. Matthias’ death is placed at circa 80 A. D. when it is said he was stoned to death by the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem for his Christian views, and then decapitated as an enemy of Caesar. However, according to several historians, Matthias was crucified in the ancient kingdom of Colchis, on the coast of the Black Sea (part of modern day Georgia, Russia, and Turkey). His method of execution and place of death remains uncertain to this day.

JAMES. (Son of Zebedee, a.k.a. James the Greater). The biblical account of James’ death is chronicled in Acts 12:1-19. He is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament Bible. As such, he is traditionally believed to be the first of the twelve disciples put to death for his faith. According to Scripture, the disciple James was “put to death with the sword,” which was accepted vernacular for decapitation (beheading), by order of King Herod Agrippa I in the year 44 A. D. Anything beyond Acts 12:1-19, is considered non-Scriptural sources and, thus, relegated to traditional thinking which may, or may not, contain elements of truth.

How the Apostles Died Cont. from Page 3 According to non-biblical writings, James was arrested and sentenced to death. It is alleged that one of James’ false accusers suddenly repented and confessed his wrongdoing, and then converted, on the spot, to Christianity, knowing fullwell that he, also, would face the death sentence. According to this apocryphal writing, the Roman executioner beheaded both men, simultaneously.

JAMES (Son of Alphaeus, a.k.a. James the Less). The apostle James has a rather dubious distinction of being, by far, the oldest disciple to be martyred at the ripe old age of 94. The nonagenarian was mercilessly beaten and stoned by persecutors, and finally clubbed to death. In Christian art he is depicted holding a fuller’s club. Other traditional sources say he was crucified in Lower Egypt. THADDAEUS. (A.k.a. Judas or Jude) Yes, there was more than one Jesus disciple called Judas. However, more commonly referred to as Thaddaeus, or sometimes Lebbaeus, the Apostle Thaddaeus would be crucified at Edessa (the names of cities in both Turkey and Greece) in the year 72 A. D. Some ancient sources give a conflicted version of his death, citing that Thaddaeus was, instead, clubbed, axed, and impaled with arrows. In the ancient Roman province of

Syria, this apostle is often depicted with the axe, which symbolizes (in that part of the world) the way in which he was killed. SIMON the Canaanite (a.k.a. the Zealot). Simon preached in Mauritania on the west coast of Africa, eventually making his way to England, where he met his death by crucifixion in the year 74 A. D., just two years after fellow apostle, Thaddaeus.

PHILIP. Philip was the first disciple chosen by the Christian, Jesus. Philip became a missionary for his faith in Asia, then he proselytized in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis, where he was scourged with a multiple-thong flagellum whip, known as a “scorpion,” which gives a flesh-tearing ‘bite’ to its victims. After the apostle Philip endured protracted sufferings from the hideous Egyptian method of scourging, he was thrown into a filth-infested prison. In the year 54 A. D. his long suffering finally terminated with his long and painful crucifixion.

JOHN. The apostle John was the only member of the original disciples who managed to avoid a most violent death. But barely. During the wave of Christian persecution in Rome, he was once thrown into a huge basin of boiling oil, but survived the ordeal. The apostle John eventually passed away peacefully at Patmos, the small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. His death is assessed by religious scholars to

THE DEATH OF JESUS. Unlike most of the apostles, the death of Jesus is vastly more reliable in its account. Largely because he interfaced directly with well-established historical figures such as the 5th prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate (A.D. 26–36) in archaic legal proceedings, as well as with Herod Antipater, ruler of Galilee and Perea. In facing his own accuser, Pontius Pilate, Roman prefect (governor) of Judaea at the time, much of this historical encounter titillates scholarly fancy and peaks intellectual interest, whether one subscribes to Christian tenets or not. The intent of this article is not to confirm or deny the validity of Jesus as a messianic figure but, rather, to view him solely as a historical figure.

The events and proceedings leading to Jesus’ own crucifixion constitutes the most well-known trialand-sentencing case in world history, permeating in its recognition every civilized culture and language on Earth, regardless if one is Christian, atheist, or agnostic. International familiarity on this incident is unquestioned. As such, Jesus’ crucifixion is so well-known and abundant that there is no need to state the obvious proceedings in this article. However, it is noteworthy to present some new

insightful and, sometimes, startling inaccuracies leading to Jesus’ crucifixion which have remained “hidden” – or at the very least – remain hugely unknown to the general public today, for over 21 centuries after the fact.

NECESSARY CLARIFICATION: HIS NAME WAS NEVER JESUS. First off, for reasons that will be explained later (and which will relate directly to his crucifixion), it must be pointed out that Jesus’ actual name was “Yeshua.” His name was never Jesus, and he was never called that during his lifetime. At birth, he was named Yeshua, a shortened form of Yahoshua or Yahshua. We sometime forget that Jesus was a Jew of antiquity, over 2,000 years ago. In the Hebrew language, there does not exist a letter with an equivalency to our Anglo-American “J.” The letter “J” (sound) may have existed long ago, but not in the ancient Hebrew language. To reiterate, the letter “J” did not exist during the time of Jesus. Historical records reveal that there was no such letter “J” in the English alphabet until it was introduced by medieval scribes, centuries later. Even after the introduction of the letter “J” (the last letter to be added to our 26letter alphabet), it still did not become widely popular until the 17th-century (1600s), centuries after its inception.

"Hey Doug," he said, "evelyn's gonna be gone from early morning Saturday till late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Why don't you come down Friday and spend the weekend with us. While evelyn is gone you and me can go out and drink lots of whiskey, chase wild, wild women, cuss a lot, and do all kinds of sinful things." "I'll do it!" he said, "I'll come down!" And he did. The English name “Jesus” is the outcome of the Greek word “Iesous” and the Latin version of “Iesus.” This Greek and Latin spelling of Jesus – along with the Hebrew spelling – was placed (according to Christian Scripture) on the head of Jesus’ cross, by order of Pontius Pilate, along with the (translated) inscription: “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.” (John 19:19). The biblical source of John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages: Hebrew, Latin, and Greek and was placed on the cross of Jesus.

That one message: “This is the King of the Jews” was written in three distinct languages of the day: the original Greek, Latin, and Hebrew spelling – but, all without the letter “J.”

To this very day, many crucifixes (most notably, Roman Catholic) still retain the original Latin version of Jesus’ name, along with the original inscription, all without the letter “J” – “Iesus, Nazarenus, Rex, Iudaeorum” (Translation: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”) This is also revealed in just the initials, which are often inscribed on crucifixes: INRI. The propensity to supplant the letter “I” (as illustrated above) with the letter “J” completed the wordtransformation into its present Christian usage: “Jesus,” in the English language. POSSIBLE POST CRUCIFIXION “NAME COVER-UP?” To reiterate, Jesus’ actual birth name, Yeshua (which means “The Lord is salvation,” or “The Lord will/has saved), was a popular name two thousand years ago in that region of the world. So common was his name that it may come as a startling revelation that the notorious Barabbas, who was released by Pontius Pilate in place of the religious Jesus, was named Jesus Barabbas (var. Bar-Abbas). The infamous criminal, Jesus Barabbas, is named in his entirety in some of the early Christian manuscripts but, interestingly, his first name was deleted by various Christian scribes, to the extent that his full name remains relatively scarce among today’s various Christian Bibles. “Jesus Barabbas” still appears in the Armenian and Syrian versions of Matthew 27:16-17. Also, in other such works as The Harper Collins Study Bible, New Revised Standard Version, 1989. (Matt., Ibid.) Of what interest is this deletion of detail?

The deletion of “Jesus” as Barabbas’ first name is viewed as no accident in transcription but, rather, is seen as a deliberate act of omission. Modern Bible scholars

evelyn left at about 4:30am Saturday morning as she had booked a breakfast attendance for 7am in the heretofore mentioned rural area of Burbank. No sooner had she left than lyle began to make plans.

He allowed as how he would pour mug after mug of grand Scotch whiskey. There was a slight problem, however, in that neither lyle nor doug drink. Unfazed, the decision was made to chase wild, wild women. lyle, it is said, prefers women who are 'rough and raw,' preferably with only one or two teeth (they are cheaper dates, he says; they don't eat nearly as much). Both he and doug prefer their women with a whole lot of tattoos all over the body ... up and down their legs, thighs, buttocks, backs, foreheads, breasts, shoulders . . . the more the better. It all adds up to sheer elegance, they both agree. So, they headed out to a biker bar but stopped on their way so they, too, might have multiple tatts applied to there heretofore pristine bodies.

Sadly, the tattoo parlors were not yet open; the biker bars had just closed several hours earlier. So, sadder, but ever wiser, doug and lyle headed out for breakfast at a local restaurant.

All the waitresses were attractive, had all their teeth, did not cuss, and were good at their jobs. Totally out of keeping with the wild, wild women doug and lyle had in mind. Maybe next time. A Church's Senior Memorable Moments

A Preacher was explaining that he must move on to a larger congregation that will pay him more. There is a hush within the congregation. No one wanted him to leave.

Joe Smith, who owns several car dealerships in the City stands up and Proclaims, 'If the Preacher stays, I will provide him with a new Cadillac every year, and his wife with a Honda minivan to transport their children!' The congregation sighs in relief, and applauds.

Sam Brown, a successful entrepreneur and investor, stands and says, 'If the Preacher will stay on here, I'll personally double his salary, and also establish a foundation to guarantee the college education of all his children!' More sighs and loud applause.

Sadie Jones, age 88, stands and announces with a smile, 'If the Preacher stays, I will give him sex!' There is total silence. The Preacher, blushing, asks her, 'Mrs. Jones, whatever possessed you to say that?'

Sadie's 90 year old husband Jake is now trying to hide, holding his forehead with the palm of his hand, and shaking his head from side to side, while his wife replies, 'Well, I just asked my husband how we could help, and he said, 'Screw him!' Isn't senility wonderful?

California Arbor Day

This week California observes Arbor Day, created in 1872 by the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture. Celebrating trees is a wonderful thing! California’s observance coincides with the birthday of botanist Luther Burbank. My Assembly Concurrent Resolution 157, (Waldron) recognizes March 7, 2020, as California Arbor Day, and urges Californians to observe the day with appropriate tree-planting programs and activities. Tree People, California ReLeaf, and the California Urban Forests Council all support ACR 157, which passed the Assembly this week.

Our Legislature first proclaimed California Arbor Day on March 7, 1974, to encourage people to plant trees and organize civic engagement in protecting urban trees. Trees are a valuable economic asset that help maintain and increase property values and attract new businesses to urban areas. By providing shade, they moderate temperature extremes and reduce energy consumption. They also reduce emissions and air pollution and

help meet statuary pollution limits by sequestering carbon. Trees remove airborne particulate matter from the atmosphere and help purify our water supplies by reducing surface water runoff, aiding water management and protecting water resources. Trees enhance aesthetic quality of urban areas by functioning as natural barriers for surface noise, and provide essential habitat for wildlife, including birds and many threatened or endangered species. A recent study by the U.S. Forest Service indicated that our nation’s cities lose around 175,000 acres or 36 million trees each year.

California proudly holds itself as the national leader on climate protections and emission reductions. Planting trees is a simple, but significant step that will improve and enhance our environment, and it’s one we all can take. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Sheriff Versus Police

Something that I get asked often when I’m out in the community is, “What’s the difference between the Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department?”

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department provides contract law enforcement services for the cities of Del Mar, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach and Vista. In these cities the Sheriff's Department serves as their police department, providing a full range of law enforcement services including patrol, traffic and investigative services. In the unincorporated areas, the Sheriff's Department provides generalized patrol and investigative services. The California Highway Patrol has the primary jurisdiction for traffic services in unincorporated areas. Also, the Sheriff’s Department provides security and related services for San Diego County Superior Courts.

The Sheriff’s Department is responsible for the safety and protection for our local detention centers and jails. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department operates seven detention facilities. Male arrestees are booked at the San Diego Central Jail and Vista Detention Facility,

while female arrestees are booked at the Las Colinas and Vista Detention Facilities. The remaining jails house inmates in the care of the Sheriff.

While this can all be a little confusing, a simple way to remember is the Sheriff’s Department is established by the state, serves as county police, have larger jurisdictions and has a head sheriff who is elected. In the case of San Diego County, Bill Gore is the elected Sheriff.

The Police are established by local town/cities. They serve in two town jurisdictions, and their head of police is appointed. While it varies on cities and counties, all law enforcement agencies work together to protect the citizens of San Diego County. I’m proud of the men and women of the Sheriff’s department and other police forces in the region and the quality service they provide. They do a great job and put their lives on the line to keep us safe.

such as William Barclay, and D. A. Carson, as well as Robert Gundry, and Klaas Schilder all believe – as well as many other Christian authorities – that Barabbas’ first name (Jesus) was expunged because it was offensive and irreverent to associate him with Jesus who is called the Christ. If any hidden reason is to be found, perhaps this one has credence. If Barabbas’ first name was, indeed, erased by early Christian scribes on purpose after the crucifixion of the historical Jesus, then such an act of omission continues to this day, without correction. As theologians are quick to admit today: “Devout Christian followers are (understandably) quick to defend and keep holy his name, then and now. However, deletion of fact is a touchy matter, in spite of any worthy or noble motive, no matter how well-intended. That “Barabbas” translates to the “Son of the Father,” may have added further discomfort to the early Christian transcribers of the Bible.”

In the wake of Jesus’ crucifixion, there remains, today, many unsolved questions, and suspicions of hidden agendas and motivations and various speculations – not from outside Christian walls – but from within -- from the scholars themselves, devout followers who wish to keep their faith transparent and open, without the insidious compromise of deceit. Such virtues are a requirement of their faith. Yet to this day, Jesus Barabbas is no longer commonly written in its entire form. As credentialed Christian scholars assert: “It may still be considered highly offensive to associate the infamous criminal Barabbas with the Christian Jesus.”

The Many Lives of an American Hero

(This is a “two part” story about one of America’s greatest heroes – a story that takes more than one 800-word column to tell). PART I:

Most people under the age of 70 probably never heard the name “Eddie Rickenbacker,” but for us “older folk,” he was America’s first flying ace. He shot down more than 26 German aircraft during World War I. He and Sgt. Alvin York were America’s most famous heroes during that conflict.

Know What? You could own this space. It’d be all yours. And over 20,000 readers each week would be able to read about what a nice person you are, and what a nice business you have. It’d be a nice little investment. Call us. We’ll talk.

In 1916, Rickenbacker traveled to London to develop a race car. Because of an erroneous press story and Rickenbacker's known “Swiss” heritage, the British suspected him of being a spy and closely monitored his activities. Back in America, he developed the idea of recruiting his race car friends as fighter pilots because they were accustomed to tight spaces and high speeds, but the suggestion was ignored by the military. In 1917, the U.S. declared war on Germany and Rickenbacker enlisted in the U.S. Army. He arrived in France on June 26, 1917, as a Sergeant First Class.

Most men chosen for pilot training had college degrees and Rickenbacker had to struggle to gain permission to fly because of his perceived lack of academic qualifications. Because of his mechanical abilities, Rickenbacker was assigned as engineering officer for the U.S. pursuit aircraft training facility, where he practiced flying during his free time. Rickenbacker learned to fly well, but because his mechanical skills were so highly valued his superiors tried to keep him grounded. Rickenbacker demonstrated he was a qualified replacement, and the military awarded him a spot in one of America's air combat units, the famed 94th Aero Squadron, informally known as the "Hat-in-the-Ring" Squadron because of its insignia.

On April 29, 1918, Rickenbacker shot down his first enemy plane. On May 28, he claimed his fifth to become an ace. Rickenbacker was awarded the French Croix de Guerre (Cross of War) that month for his first five aerial victories.

Born on Oct 8, 1890. Rickenbacker had many lives – an auto mechanic, a race car driver, an automobile designer, a government military consultant, a comic-strip writer, as well as a radio and screen writer, plus the long-time CEO of a major U.S. air carrier – Eastern Airlines. He received the most awards for valor by an American serviceman during World War I.

At eighteen, Rickenbacker was, in his own words, “salesman, automobile demonstrator, mechanic, chief engineer, experimenter -- in short, the whole ball of wax." In this early period of his life he once chauffeured presidential candidate Williams Jennings Bryan.

To repeat, of what importance are such details?

Upon his crucifixion, the historical Jesus would continue to be enormously misunderstood and misin-

by Tom Morrow

Once you visit the new Hunsakers at Vincent’s you’ll readily see the artistic flair Jeannette has . . . as well as her flair for detail.

In 2020, archaeologists have, so far, unearthed the tombs of over 71 “Yeshuas” (Jesus) from the period of Jesus’ death.

Such historically accurate details are of immense importance to Christians who are curious on all phases of their faith and, therefore, it is highly democratic to give them what they wish and hunger to know. Honesty and integrity is a requirement of their faith and Christians have expressed, repeatedly, in worldwide surveys and polls that they do not want boundaries or limitations placed in their quest to learn all things which pertain to their faith. Any compromise would be considered antithetical to Christian tenets.

Historically Speaking

1910, he won most of the dirt-track races he entered around and near Omaha, Neb. Noted driver Lee Frayer invited Rickenbacker to be his relief driver in May of that year during the first-ever Indianapolis 500. He would compete four times as a driver in the Indianapolis 500 before World War I.

At the beginning of World War I, Rickenbacker had several encounters with aviators, including an incident in which he repaired a stranded aircraft for Townsend F. Dodd, a man who later became General John J. Pershing's aviation officer and an important contact in Rickenbacker's attempt to join the U.S. flying corps.

During World War I, with its antiGerman atmosphere, he, like so many other German-Americans, changed his original surname. The "h" in "Rickenbacher" became a "k" in an effort to "take the German out of his name."

On May 30, he scored his sixth victory. Rickenbacker shot down Germany's new fighter, the Fokker D.VII, on Sept. 14, 1918, and another the next day. On Sept. 24, 1918, now a captain, he was named commander of the squadron, and on the following day, he claimed two more German planes, for which he was “belatedly” awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (in 1931) by President Herbert Hoover.

After claiming yet another Fokker victory on Sept. 27, 1918, Rickenbacker became a balloon buster by downing observation balloons on Sept. 28, Oct. 1, Oct. 3, Oct. 27, and Oct. 30. He was credited with destroying five balloons earning Rickenbacker the distinction of "balloon ace." Thirteen more victories bringing his total to 13 Fokker, four other German fighters, five highly defended observation balloons, and four two-seated reconnaissance planes. Rickenbacker's 26 victories remained the American record until World War II. He flew a total of 300 combat hours, more than any other U.S. pilot. On Nov. 11, 1918, the day of the Armistice, Rickenbacker flew his plane above the western front to observe former enemy troops crossing the front lines greeting and joining in the celebrations. Rickenbacker was awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Cross a record eight times during the war. He was discharged in the U.S. Army Air Service with the rank of captain. But there’s more … much more in the life of this fascinating American hero. NEXT WEEK: The continuing saga of Eddie Rickenbacker

Would you like to add seven-and-a-half years to your life expectancy? The University of Texas found you can, by doing just one thing. A Duke University study found this one thing contributed to better mental health, lower blood pressure, and diminished aging-markers.

The University of Denver found that this same thing also raised marital satisfaction levels. The University of Virginia found doing it reduces the likelihood of divorce by 35%.

Researcher Janet Washington discovered people who practice this one action are less likely to be depressed, more likely to be optimistic, and tend to be happier about their lives.

If all that isn’t enough, Peter Haas’ findings show that this one thing, done once a week, is accompanied by a bet-

Science has found that church attendance works. It gives us more of what we’re hoping for in life, for a one hour a week investment. If that’s really true, then what keeps so many of us from getting to church these days? Well, we’re busy. We have things we want to achieve, hopes we want to fulfill, relationships we want to develop. Funny thing. The research all says, if you’ll commit to a regular rendezvous with God and His people each week, that one commitment will help you achieve what you want, fulfill the hopes you have, and bring you the relationships you’re looking for. Give it a try. Google “churches in my area.” Then check one out. Introduce yourself to the pastor. Offer to buy him lunch. (Which will accelerate your feeling like you belong in that place.) Or, stop by my church. New Song meets in two locations. 3985 Mission Avenue in Oceanside, and 3781 Pio Pico in Carlsbad. Oceanside services are at 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday. Our Carlsbad service is at 10 a.m. Sunday. Introduce yourself to me, and I’ll buy you lunch.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido,

At a recent City Council Meeting, I delayed a discussion on an agenda item discussing campaign donation limits, because one of the council members was sick and I thought everyone should be there. So, I want to discuss it with you because I would really like to hear your opinion.

Basically, our campaign limit is $4300 per person or $8600 for a couple. In comparison to the surrounding cities, even San Diego, that amount is significantly higher. That said, there are some races and some cities that have no limit. So what’s the concern. If you are an incumbent and developer friendly, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that developers try to buy your support with a large donation. Your challenger however might have to ask 43 of their friends for 100 dollars each. You see the concern. The city could be “for sale.” But, does the developer or candidate not have the right to solicit money from whomever would give it to them. What do you think?

How long will The “Door” Stay open?

For now Microsoft is holding the “door” open by allowing any Windows7/8 notebook, desktop or all-in-one PC to be upgraded to Windows10 without charging for a Windows10 license ($150 to $200). If you are a business or home user who still has a Windows 7/8 PC around, even one you aren’t using you should pay attention. That five to ten year old Windows 7/8 PC is likely as good or better than the new ones being sold in big box stores like Fry’s, Best Buy and Costco. How can

terpreted. His final cry from the cross, just outside the walls of Jerusalem, at a hilly locale called Golgotha (derived from the Aramaic word “gulgulta,” meaning “Place of the skull”) he said in his original Aramaic tongue: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani” which translates to: “My God, My God, why hath thou forsaken me?”

Once more, even to end, his words would be misunderstood to many. His piercing words were by “design,” and not – as commonly believed – merely words expressing his feelings of abandonment. In meeting his death – whether he was the true Messiah or not – the historical figure on the cross was actually quoting words that had been written approximately 1,000-years before his own crucifixion. He was quoting exact word from the Hebrew Torah (a.k.a. the Christian Old Testament bible), where Psalms 22:1 reads: “My God, My God, why has thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring.”

Interestingly, this cry from the cross at Calvary was, ostensibly, a statement of fulfilling Scripture, as is clearly traced to an earlier source, word for word. And not a cry of being abandoned. How the apostles met their death, including their leader and teacher,

Today Best Buy has a Dell Inspiron AIO 13475-A5098blk on sale for $579 (down from $649). It has 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD (hard drive) and is driven by an A9-9429 CPU with a benchmark speed of 2450. The Intel Core2 Q9400 CPU that showed up in PCs in early 2009 (11 years ago) was by no means Intel’s fastest CPU but it was actually a bit faster (2519) than the CPU in that brand new Dell at Best Buy. The truth is that, in general, retail PCs aren’t any faster, have no more memory and often have smaller hard drives than they did ten years ago. PC manufacturers are aware that only “power users” benefit from high performance PC components, so for the vast majority of small business and home users they have concentrated on making PCs cheaper, not faster. This means that notebook, desktop and all-inone PCs born with Windows 7/8 and upgraded to Windows 10 are as up to date and functional as a brand new retail Dell or HP, often better. Right now nearly any PC purchased in the past ten years can be upgraded to Win10 for a fraction

Jesus of Nazareth, is a real chapter out of the pages of human history. We do not have to subscribe to Christian theology to be interested in such historical events. We can view such historical timelines in the same manner that secular colleges and universities today teach about the Christian Crusades in Europe and Western Asia, or the life of Buddha, the Hindu teacher Mahatma Ghandi, or when the Moors were defeated and driven out of Spain by the armies of a Christian monarchy. So, also can we freely read and just be “armchair historians” who wish to learn more about the world around us. And learn about the historical events and people who have influenced and shaped our landscape of human thinking. Like how the apostles died. And the dignity and freedom to read about it, without the necessity of subscribing to any particular faith or doctrine of belief.

of the cost of a new PC, but Microsoft could slam that “door” at any time. Microsoft is under considerable pressure from the entire industry to stop allowing “free” Win10 to Win7/8 license holders. Once Microsoft shuts the “door” the upgrade option will be far less attractive, Win7/8 PCs will lose their value and new computer sales will get a boost. Microsoft will eventually yield to industry pressure and shut the “door.” We think that will be sooner rather than later.

Forewarned is forearmed. This “Golden Age” for the Win10 upgrade is coming to an end.

many non-Christian sources who greatly navigated me to sources vastly unknown to me. Both Christian and non-Christian sources worked amiably together during my research and with great mutual respect and tolerance. There was no “rock throwing” or judgmental condemnation.

All of which tells me, there is still a great hope for human harmony on our planet, despite our many differences and deep offsetting viewpoints.

If you are now or soon will be in the market for a new or replacement PC, consider the “enterprise refurb” Win10 Professional PCs. We have dozens of these AIO, notebook and desktops in stock. They are higher in quality, performance and reliability and half the price of retail PCs. Times a wastin’ !

natural resources for the enjoyment of all San Diegans – today and tomorrow. According to The San Diego Foundation Parks for Everyone report, 45 percent of San Diego County’s total land area is green space, yet many low-income, communities of color have a disproportionately lower degree of access to parks and open spaces. This lack of access has decreased community engagement in the outdoors, directly impacting both the mental and physical health of San Diegans. In response, The San Diego Foundation Opening the Outdoors grant cycle will invest in programs that clearly contribute to system or individual change resulting in opportunities for children and families in the San Diego region to grow, connect and thrive through positive interactions with the outdoors. To be considered, eligible organizations must submit a proposal by April 6. The San Diego Foundation will prioritize applications with thoughtful collaborations, strategic partnerships and measurable goals. Proposals will be reviewed by Foundation staff and a review committee comprised of a diverse group of community volunteers with expertise in philanthropy and the environment. S.D. Animal Welfare Coalition Reminds Community to Spay and Neuter Pets - The World Spay Day was Tuesday, February 25th, and the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition urges the community to spay and neuter their pets. Not only is spaying/neutering the solution to pet homelessness, it also offers numerous health benefits for pets such as protection from illnesses like testicular cancer, mammary cancer, enlarged prostate gland and uterine cancer. Studies also show that altered pets often exhibit less unwanted behavior, such as urine-marking, roaming and aggression. “Targeted spay and neuter efforts are the best way we know to proactively address the challenge of animal homelessness in San Diego County,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “We want to empower pet owners to make the responsible care choices that will benefit the

DAR Chapter Presented Student Awards - The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), recently held their annual student awards meeting, Regent Charla Boodry presiding. Alida Woodward and Mary Catherine Kirby, DAR American History Essay Contest Co-Chairs, introduced the program by describing the essay topic, “The Voyage of the Mayflower”, and outlining some of the requirements. Mrs. Woodward introduced the three winners who each read her essay: Phoebe Lee, Fifth Grade; Carly Glass, Sixth Grade, and Molly Glass, Eighth Grade. The three students attend St. Patrick Catholic School. Each was presented with a Chapter winner certificate, an award check and an American History pin. Students were accompanied by Jim Burke, teacher at St. Patricks and their mother’s Noelle Lee and Julie Glass.

The three winning essays had previously been forwarded to District XIV for judging where each was judged to be a district winner. Laquetta Montgomery, American History Chair, District XIV, additionally added comments relevant to the essay subject and presented the District XIV level awards to the same students. She awarded each a District certificate, an award check and an American History pin. The three District XIV winning essays were then forwarded to State for judging. Results will be forthcoming.
