by Friedrich Gomez
It wasn’t that long ago when the king of dinosaurs, known as Tyrannosaurus Rex, terrorized downtown San Diego citizens and suburbanites. However, T-rex was considerate enough to interrupt his rampage long enough to quench his thirst at a suburban swimming pool before swallowing the neighbor’s dog, whole, during a short supper break.
This all happened less than twenty years ago -- on May 25, 1997, to be more precise. Of course, it was just a movie, but it placed San Diego front-and-center for a global viewing audience that watched, spellbound, the film “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.” The monster-sized success of the five Jurassic Park-related movies by Universal Studios ignited a worldwide interest in dinosaurs that continues to this very day. More so than ever before.
T-rex and company have never been

more popular since they made their final curtain call over 65-million years ago. In fact, renewed public fascination with these prehistoric creatures has been the greatest comeback, of sorts, since the Biblical Lazarus.
How popular are these prehistoric creatures with human beings, today? Well, this level of intrigue has, quite simply, gone off the meter. Dinosaurs and dinosaur exhibits are happening everywhere. Simply put, dinosaurs are bigger than ever, and not just in size, but in popularity.
Let’s cut to the chase: San Diego County is being overwhelmed by dinosaurs! And more will be arriving in the very near future to complete the invasion.
This year’s upcoming 2017 edition of the San Diego County Fair, which runs June 2 through July 4, has jumped onboard the dinosaur popularity bandwagon with an amazing T-rex exhibit
that is excitingly interactive! The traveling exhibit is making designated stops around the United States like a highlypopular rock-star band on a concert tour. The much-anticipated San Diego stopover at this year’s Del Mar fair location is aptly titled, “T-Rex Planet,” and it plans to give the public a most stimulating journey back into time with a closeup and personal encounter that is truly full of wonder. The interactive part makes it doubly-fun . . . and doubly exciting. All family-friendly, of course – so don’t forget to bring along the kids. The entire dinosaur experience is out of popular demand and it promises not to disappoint. The fair’s upcoming T-Rex Planet exhibit will allow visitors to experience what it was actually like back during the Jurassic, Triassic, and Cretaceous periods, all first-hand. You will even encounter “Tracey,” described as a young T-rex who greets guests and wanders around, playing among the exhibits during designated time periods. But, the main exhibit promises to knock your
intellectual socks off! It features lifesize, ultra-realistic animatronic dinosaurs – over 40 life-like dinosaurs in total – some even include rides, etc. It is children-friendly and the touring exhibit across America has given both adults and youngsters a greater knowledge and fresher education about these amazing creatures of long ago which once ruled our planet.
There is something for everyone, including a dinosaur band and exciting activities which include fossil digs where youngsters can be paleontologists (dinosaur scientists) and dig up ancient bones! Not to be missed for the kiddies are “Dino Bounce” houses with inflatable dinosaurs and much, much more. Adults, including students and visiting scientists, will have more than their fair share of a once-in-a-life time experience at the T-Rex Planet exhibit. It is truly an entire-family experience just waiting to be discovered. It is a visual and mindboggling journey which proves that sci-

ence can be a most exhilarating and fun experience.
The T-rex exposure at this year’s seaside county fair will, no doubt, help boost attendance. The San Diego County Fair is already among the top ten fairs in all of America, smashing attendance records left, right, and center. Last year’s record attendance at the 2016 fairgrounds amassed a staggering 1,609,481 visitors! To put that number of people in perspective, consider the following: with attendance well over 1 ½-million, our San Diego County Fair actually had more visitors than the entire populations found in eleven U. S. states, including: New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Vermont, Montana, South and North Dakota, Wyoming, and Alaska, to cite just a few examples. More exciting information and photos on this year’s T-Rex Planet can be found on their official website: www.trexplanet.com. This most popular exhibit is based in Dearborn, Michigan and will continue to tour other U. S. States after departing the San Diego County Fair. Best bet is to see it here, in your own city before it travels elsewhere across America. Let’s answer some of the most popular fun questions asked by the public about T-rex and company.
CAN A HUMAN BEING OUTRUN A T-REX?
The answer to this most-often asked query is, yes and no. For the average person running from a fully-grown
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! What Is Butt Dust?
What, you ask, is 'Butt dust'?
Read on and you'll discover the joy in it! These have to be original and genuine. No adult is this creative! JACK (age 3) Was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister... After a while he asked: 'Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk? '
STEVEN (age 3) Hugged and kissed his Mom good night. 'I love you so much that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window.' BRITTANY (age 4) Had an ear ache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl
Tyrannosaurus rex, you would most assuredly end up as either breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the time of day you’re running for your life. By the way, for T-rex, you might only be a bite-size snack, depending on your height and weight. For example, Tyrannosaurus rex had the capacity to consume even a large 500-pound man or woman in one, single bite! Gulp! As far as speed, it is most frightening to realize that a running Tyrannosaurus rex covered about 25-feet per step, possibly more!
But, what about a world-class Olympic sprinter? Well, the answer is slightly different, but, the grisly end-result would be the same. The fastest human sprinter officially on record is Usain Bolt who was clocked at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany on August 16, 2009. Bolt was clocked fastest between the 60th and the 80th meter, which he covered in 1.61 seconds. His fastest speed was timed at 27.8 mph, just under 28 mph. That’s extremely quick for a human being. However, it must be kept in mind that this unusual human foot-speed is shortlived (no pun intended). The top speed of 27.8 mph is short in duration, which means Usain Bolt could (possibly) be able to outrun T-rex from a dead-start – but, only for a very short duration of time, perhaps mere seconds. And it is quite possible that any world-class sprinter may not have been able to outrun the infamous T-rex at all, not even for a brief time because T-rex may have been even quicker than we think in both foot speed and predatory reflexes. There is much we are re-discovering about the prehistoric Bad Boy, T-Rex. At first, paleontologists and biomechanical engineers calculated T-rex’s

SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said, 'It makes my teeth cough..' DJ (age 4) Stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: 'How much do I cost?' CLINTON (age 5) was in his bedroom looking worried when his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied, 'I don't know what'll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in it?'
MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: 'Why is he whispering in her mouth?' TAMMY(age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, 'Why doesn't her skin fit her face?'
JAMES (age4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.' Concerned, James asked: 'What happened to the flea?' And finally the answer to the question:

top speed at 25 mph. However, as science advances and newer discoveries are made about T-rex, it is becoming more abundantly clear that this king of the tyrant lizards may have been much faster than the initial 25 mph calculation. However, the scientific jury is still out on T-rex’s running speed. According to John R. Hutchison (publisher of T-rex studies in scientific journals), Tyrannosaurus rex may have topped out at between 15 and 25 mph. Either way, even under the best of human conditions, a human Olympic world-class sprinter would only be able to outrun Trex for a few brief seconds at best. Experts have been debating over the actual foot speed of T-rex for many years. One reason for the inaccuracies was that T-rex was, at first, thought to have stood upright, with his tail dragging behind him (think Godzilla). We now know that Tyrannosaurus rex walked and ran more horizontal to the ground with his tail more outward, parallel to terra firma and, certainly, not dragging behind him, as once imagined. By the end of the 1800s, T-rex was more accurately re-constructed. As one scientific source phrased it, “Over the last few decades, however, the standard model of T-rex locomotion has been revised yet again. Some studies pushed for a “fast running” T-rex hypothesis, claiming that the tyrant lizard may have been capable of speeds in excess of 45 miles per hour.”
Well, if these findings are true and T-rex could run 45 mph, then any world-class sprinter’s best chance would be to run from T-rex along with a few friends; then you no longer need to outrun Tyrannosauros rex – you just need to outrun your friends! WHAT IS THE MOST SHOCKING FACT ABOUT T-REX?
began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?' RESURRECTION?
While the priest was presenting a children's sermon, he asked the children if they knew what the Resurrection was.
Now, asking questions during children's sermons is crucial, but at the same time, asking children questions in front of a congregation can also be very dangerous. In response to the question, a little boy raised his hand. The priest called on him and the boy said, "I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor." It took ten minutes for the congregation to settle down enough for the service to continue. ••••• You hate to find out about this at the airport but I just learned I have a "blurred groin." ••••• THE BLONDE WHO MARRIED A CATHOLIC

So glad you asked! Biggest T-rex mythbuster on a worldwide basis is: Tyrannosaurus rex never lived during the Jurassic period! I’m so sorry, but, the five Jurassic Park movies were all incorrect, yet the movies generated this global mistake, which is still the most repeated myth to this very day! T-rex lived during the late Cretaceous period, about 65 to 85 million years ago. HOW BIG WAS T-REX?
T-rex seems to be getting larger and larger the more we learn about the species.
Based on (conservative) estimates gathered from hard science (fossil studies, etc.), we now realize that the T-rex species can mature to over 42 feet in length and up to 20-feet tall, possibly even taller.
Along with more advanced and sophisticated fossil studies, these most current estimates may still have fallen short of a fully-grown male or female T-rex. Robbie Gonzalez has filed a report from world experts studying this particular size aspect. As he reports: “An international team of researchers has used three-dimensional laser scans to determine that Tyrannosaurus rex were likely 30% more massive that we once thought.”
As the heavyweight carnivore champ of its day, adding almost 1/3 body mass to this predator would be adding ‘overkill’ to its already-deadly physicality; all that would be left is to give T-rex wings! Yes, there were dinosaurs a lot larger than T-rex, but they were not ferocious

The girl, crying, replied, 'Sniff, sniff... Dad.... I became a prostitute.' 'Ye what!? Get outta here, ye shameless harlot! Sinner! You're a disgrace to this Catholic family.'

meat-eaters but, instead, were relatively peaceful giants compared to T-rex who exemplified a pared-down muscled killing machine. And scavenger.
T-rex was, by far, the largest and most formidable carnivore (meat-eater) in its environment. The top of the food chain. Just as Spinosaurus and Giganotosaurus are thought to have been the largest and dominant bipedal carnivores during their respective times and regions. (In regards to both Spinosaurus and Giganotosaurus, many modern experts today now believe their initial size estimates “were given to great exaggeration.” In contrast, T-rex has been proven to be a lot bigger than initially thought, as proven by the skeletal remains of “Sue,” the T-rex and other recent fossil revelations.) Regardless of the ongoing scientific debate on size comparisons, there is no disagreement that Tyrannosaurus rex was among the largest theropods to have roamed the Earth. ARE ANY T-REX FOSSILS COMPLETE?
The world’s largest and most complete T-rex skeletal remains are that of “Sue,” a Tyrannosaurus rex specimen, so nicknamed after its discoverer (Susan Henrickson), and whose home base is in the Field Museum, at Chicago, Illinois. She is the best and most extensive T-rex fossil specimen found to date, establishing a record of being 90% complete by bulk.
Sue is also the most valuable, having been auctioned off for a record $8.36million back in October of 1997, making

her the most expensive fossil ever sold. They believe she weighed in excess of nine tons (over 18,000 pounds). Sue proves to experts that T-rex was more than 30% bigger (or 1/3 larger) than we first thought. She was a big girl at 42feet long and standing 12-feet (at the hips!).
To celebrate her birthday you would need to have at least 65-million candles on her birthday cake! Hmm, that might be enough for my uncle Louie . . . if he doesn’t ask for seconds. The worldwide popularity of dinosaurs is going through the stratosphere, and not just for the scientific community, but, for the general public, as well. WERE FEMALE T-REXES BIGGER THAN MALES?
Surprisingly, the short answer is “yes.” There are several species of raptor birds, such as hawks and eagles, wherein the females are larger than males. This seems to hold true, also, with Tyrannosaurus rex. HOW SMART WAS T-REX?

size ratio, its brain was comparatively small, but still larger than the human brain. Its brain was long and cylindrical in shape. The thinking part of its brain (the cerebrum) was tiny. Scientists are not certain, but, they believe T-rex was close to having the intelligence level of a crocodile, but this remains unproven. However, its instincts along with sense of smell and sight were enough to make T-rex a most formidable and proficient hunter/scavenger.
Velociraptors, the fleet-footed smaller villains in the Jurassic Park movies were a lot smarter. It is surmised that Velociraptors possessed a brain power that was close to that of a modern cat or dog. Which would make them quite intelligent. T-REX VS SPINOSAURUS FIGHT – WHO WOULD WIN?
This is a most popular question, particularly among young adults. Since Spinosaurus is thought to have been the largest carnivore of its day – even bigger than T-rex – such facts would seem to invite comparative questions, such as which of these two dinosaurs would be dominant on the food chain and which one would prevail in a battle against one another. It is not surprising that this query is posted millions of times over on the world internet by the lay public who crave to know the answer but, sadly, are often given the wrong answer by non-experts in the field. First off, they would never fight each other. Although T-rex and Spinosaurus lived during the Cretaceous period, they lived millions of years apart and on dif-

On 03-10-17 at 7:06 A.M. officers from the Escondido Police Department arrived at the residence of 330 James St to investigate the death of 70 year old Elizabeth “Betty” Seitz. Her son, 40 year old Damon Arthur Seitz, lived at the residence with Betty and was at the location when police arrived. At 7:50 A.M., as officers were continuing their investigation, Damon suddenly and without provocation removed a handgun from his pocket and confronted one officer. That officer, fearing for his life, drew his department-issued sidearm and fired at Damon, striking him several times. Officers immediately began lifesaving measures and called for paramedics to respond. Escondido Fire Department paramedics transported Damon Seitz to Palomar Hospital for treatment, but at 8:29 A.M. he succumbed to his injuries. A warrant was obtained and served at the residence, and several items were recovered. The handgun that was in Damon Seitz’ hand at the time of the altercation was a Sig-Sauer 9mm; it was loaded with 6 rounds in the magazine and 1 round in the chamber, with the hammer in the cocked position.
Also removed from the home were 20 rifles, 7 shotguns and 8 handguns. All firearms and other evidence were impounded at the Escondido Police Department for proper disposition. Autopsies are being conducted by the County Medical Examiner and those results are pending at this time. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Detective Ross Umstot at (760) 839-4463, or leave an anonymous tip at 760-743-TIPS (8477). Serious Injury Accident - Escondido
On March 7, 2017 at about 5:06 PM officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to El Norte Parkway and Ivy Street regarding a pedestrian versus vehicle accident. EPD officers and Escondido Fire paramedics arrived on scene minutes later and located a 17 year old male in the street. Fire personnel treated the juvenile at the scene and transported him to the Palomar Medical Center. Based on witness statements and physical evidence at the scene, the juvenile was riding a skateboard on the north sidewalk of El Norte Parkway. He attempted to cross El Norte Parkway southbound at Ivy Street and was struck by a 23 year old female driver in a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The juvenile sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured in the collision. Alcohol or drug impairment is not a factor in this colli-

According to witnesses, it is believed at least two possible gang members were shooting at each other in the 1800 block of E. Grand Ave. As the shooting was occurring, Kennedy was driving east on Grand Ave and was struck by a stray bullet, causing her to lose control and crash into a parked, unoccupied vehicle. Kennedy was transported to Palomar Hospital but later died as a result of her injuries. The suspect(s) responsible for this crime have not yet been identified. The investigation into this case is ongoing. The Escondido Police Department is seeking assistance from the public to help solve this tragic crime. If anyone has any information regarding this case,

Dennis O’Sullivan, one of the world’s greatest attorney, invested in building two authentic Irish pubs . . . and they have been a smashing success! You almost feel you’re back in the Emeral Isle . . . and would not be too surprised were you to hear “the Gaelic” being spoken.
I have been on a strict liquid diet for several months now . . . have lost 30 lbs in the process . . but on this night I broke my diet, just temporarily, and had the Fish and Chips. And I don’t regret it. Not one teeny-tiny bit! The Fish was out of this world. Flaky, tasty, filling, and healthy. I only ate about half of my chips (only because I am on a diet, you know). They were delicious as well, particularly with malt vinegar (the way the Irish eat them), but . . . I may have drifted away from my diet for one night . . . but I didn’t want to stray too far . . . so I only ate half the chips. Whether in Carlsbad or Escondido, I heartily recommend O’Sullivan’s. On March 12 at 5:00 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Pio Pico Drive and Chestnut Avenue regarding a single vehicle traffic collision. The Police Department was also notified that the driver of the vehicle had walked onto the Interstate 5 freeway.
Arriving officers found that a single vehicle had collided with a wall.
Officers searched the area and found a 36-year-old, white male sitting outside the railing of the Chestnut Avenue Interstate 5 southbound overpass. The male was threatening to jump from the overpass. Officers also learned that the male had intentionally crashed his vehicle in an attempt to harm himself.
Officers, assisted by the Carlsbad Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol, negotiated with the male for approximately 30 minutes. During the negotiations, officers saw an opportunity to approach the subject and physically remove him from the overpass. The subject was taken to a local mental health care facility for treatment. Police Craig Carter, his Public Information Officer, Lieutenant Justin Murphy, and the Escondido Police Department’s detectives and officers as they pursue the heinous suspect who shot and killed an innocent woman, Cathy Kennedy, who was on her way home from a bible study class.
Chief Carter made an impassioned statement about the tragedy and vowed his department would not rest until the suspect had been found, identified, and prosecuted. Bravo for Chief Carter and his department. We have a top drawer police department and they get the job done. This tragedy should never have happend and the word is out on the street that gang members had better behave themselves or they’ll pay the consequences . . . behind prison bars, where they belong.
Enough! It is time to put the hammer down on these no-good punks and we have just the team to do it. Anyone who knows anything about this crime, including gang members, should contact the Escondido Police Department with any information they may have that would lead to the arrest and conviction of this suspect. Dinosaurs Cont. from Page 3
The most current scientific data seems to verify this, viz. that the T-rex species was a lot bigger than initially thought and, perhaps, more importantly, T-rex had no equal in jaw and teeth strength. Ongoing scientific studies reveal that Trex was even far deadlier and stronger than first thought. Repeated studies revealed the following: “The T-rex dinosaur species had the strongest bite of any land animal – even harder than we previously thought. The Tyrannosaurus rex known as “Stan,” excavated in South Dakota in 1992 seems to confirm this among the T-rex species.” T-rex appears to be a scientific Pandora’s box, unleashing new evidence of seemingly unending, deadly surprises which keep adding to its arsenal of ferocious power.
ferent continents. While T-rex was the largest land carnivore (meat eater) of his period, Spinosaurus was the largest carnivore of his respective region and time period.
However, as previously stated, these three predators never lived during the same time, nor the same region. Spinosaurus may have had a greater length than T-rex (up to 6-feet longer), but both were not that far off in sheer tonnage as previously cited by the world’s foremost paleontologists and biomechanical engineers. While the most august members of the scientific community have, by strong general consensus, added to the size of T-rex in recent years (see data previously cited in this article), Spinosaurus– on the other hand – has diminished in size and tonnage, as re-evaluated by the world’s most respected and foremost paleontologists.
In the October 2012 issue of Smithsonian Magazine, Brian Switek reports: “Thanks to two British researchers, it’s now clear that the giant T-rex carnivore bit harder than experts had thought. A lot harder.”
Karl Bates, a biomechanical expert at the University of Liverpool, along with paleontologist, Peter Falkingham, published findings in regards to the enormous biting power of T-rex. The two Liverpool scientists found through digital models and anatomical studies that T-rex left tooth marks on fossilized prey that were “quite surprising” and greatly unequalled in their super-strength by any other predator dinosaur from any other era, including Spinosaurus, or Torvosaurus gurneyi -- the latter was recently discovered in Portugal and which – like T-rex - dominated the food chain 150-million years ago. But even these contenders to the predator throne, including Spinosaurus, fall far short of the unusual and prodigious biting power possessed by T-rex.
Last year, in 2016, scientists unanimously debunked Spinosaurus’ alleged 52foot to 59-foot length: “Instead claiming the behemoth (Spinosaurus) was 41 to 47-feet long and closer to 7 to 9 tons in weight.” Aside from Spinosaurus’ slightly longer length (perhaps 5-feet longer), their body weight is about equal, according to the most recent findings/calculations.
Spinosaurus would have had “life-critical” disadvantages in facing a fully mature Trex, especially since the scientific community has revised T-rex’s size and strength (which will be discussed shortly). Though Spinosaurus possessed large teeth for both fish and land prey, most scholars give the edge, nonetheless, to T-rex in such a hypothetical showdown.
Scientists, such as Bates and Falkingham, surmised the maximum biting force of a mature T-rex was an unbelievable 12,800 pounds! Astounding, since this biting power is, sometimes, almost equal to the total T-rex body weight!
As the research team phrased it: “That would make T-rex the hardest-biting terrestrial animal ever known.” This research team proved the biting power to be as much as three times greater than previous estimates, and six to seven times greater than the biting force for the Allosaurus, and about 3 ½ times greater than the hardest bite measured by Australian saltwater crocodiles! The shape of the head, jaw, and overall skull of T-rex, all contribute to the ferocious tearing, ripping, and biting power of a mature, fully grown T-rex.
Though Spinosaurus’ height is given at around 20-feet tall, that height is from the apex (highest part) of his vertebra (back sail), not the height of his head and thorax (throat) above the ground. The vulnerable head of Spinosaurus is far lower, as low as 14 feet off the ground, sometimes even lower than that. These anatomical features would give a ferocious “pit-bull” advantage for a 15 to 20-foot tall T-rex who would tower over his adversary’s vulnerable head for a massive downward-head attack. Also, despite its many teeth for defense, none of Spinosaurus’ teeth were serrated; they were conical in shape. T-Rex’s teeth were serrated (jagged) like a steak knife for ripping and tearing flesh. University of Toronto Mississauga paleontologist, Dr. Kirstin Brink, said T-rex’s serrated teeth could actually crush solid bone! Dr. Brink was quoted as saying: “But the serrations were most efficient for piercing flesh and gripping it while ripping off
chunks of meat, called the ‘puncture and pull’ feeding style.”
A study involving eight scientists further revealed: “Internal dental tissues were arranged in a way that reinforced the strength and prolonged the life of teeth that were serrated like steak knives (such as found in T-rex) for easy dismembering of other dinosaurs.” Additionally, to its great disadvantage, Spinosaurus had an elongated slender head and jaw more suited to catching fish; this slender, thinner configuration would make the jaw, head, and throatlatch region far more fragile and easier broken if clamped upon by such a predator as Tyrannosaurus rex, whose head and heavy jaw were massive in ratio to its size. Scientists, such as Nizar Ibrahim, have clearly stated: “It is doubtful, however, that the Spinosaurus attempted to feed on much larger dinosaurs due to the fact that its teeth and jaws were more suited to feeding on fish than to capturing and killing terrestrial prey.”
The only creatures that had greater jawbiting force than Tyrannosaurus rex were giant, extinct sharks and ancient prehistoric crocodiles, but, they are not in the same dinosaur category. So, to answer your interesting question, a hypothetical combat between these two predators, Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex, would most assuredly end quickly and decisively in favor of that aptly named “King of the Tyrant Lizards,” Tyrannosaurus rex. So say the foremost experts. IS THERE MORE THAN ONE

SPECIES OF T-REX?
Yes. There are more than 50 species of Tyrannosaurus rex that have been identified, so far. However, scientists are still debating which species may be admitted to the T-rex family tree. For example, Tarbosaurus bataar (from Asia) is considered by some scientists to be a second Tyrannosaurus species while other scientists disagree with this assessment and consider Tarbosaurus bataar to be a separate genus.

ARE THERE DINOSAUR FOSSILS IN SAN DIEGO?
Yes, but rare. Reason being is that San Diego County was under the ocean during the time when dinosaurs lived on land. Dinosaur bones that were washed out to sea during any flood event might have found their way to our region. Prominent places where prehistoric fossils have been discovered in San Diego County are at Carlsbad, La Jolla, and Sunset Cliffs, to cite just three locale examples. Back in 1967, near the celebrated Marine Room restaurant at La Jolla, California, where I have been known to eat like a dinosaur, a vertebra (back bone) of a duck-billed dinosaur known as a hadrosaur was discovered.
In 1983, a thigh bone of another hadrosaur was discovered, this time, during a Koll Construction site near McClellan-Palomar Airport at Carlsbad, California. Then, in 1987, San Diego’s North County went on national news when a prehistoric skeleton was found at Carlsbad, California of a Nodosaurus dinsosaur. It was the only nodosaur fossil found west of New Mexico! The dinosaur was believed to have been 13feet long when it once walked the Earth. Bones of prehistoric mammoth, bison, and even horses have been unearthed at the Quarry Creek development, only a stone’s throw from Route 78 in Carlsbad, California. Whenever earthmovers and other construction vehicles uncover ancient fossils, work operation is immediately stopped so that authorized paleontologists and other scientists can quickly intervene to save these precious remnants from the past. Many of these discovered fossils can be viewed at the San Diego Natural History Museum in lush Balboa Park. SAN DIEGO HOSTS “THE ULTIMATE DINOSAURS” EXHIBIT.

WHERE DID T-REX LIVE?
Excellent question. It is general scientific consensus that Tyrannosaurus rex lived only in North America and Asia. However, the discovery of a hip bone belonging to an ancestor of T-rex was found at Dinosaur Cove in Victoria, Australia. This exciting new fossil find has caused some paleontologists to now speculate that Tyrannosaurus rex may have lived all over the world, including Africa, South America, and India. However, to date, these newer extensive theories which state that T-rex may have lived all over the world, still, remain unproven. Stay tuned.

that provide a permanent reminder of those who have faithfully served our country and community. Her support for veterans also led to a visual tribute called “Honor Our Veterans,” which became an annual show and living history display, often visited by school children during field trips.
Marty’s passion extends to educating the public on the importance of the arts. She established “DreamAbility,” a showcase to display fine art by and for artists with disabilities. With her belief in ability, not disability, Marty’s goal was to share the stories of artists with disabilities in a way that would educate and inspire the public. By recognizing and honoring women like Marty Tiedeman, the Legislature’s Woman of the Year program provides inspirational examples of service, accomplishment and dedication for all Californians.

The Disappearing Indians Dear mr. Davis,
Just got through reading part 2 of Disappearing Indians. Both stories were most informative.
I have a couple of questions: Where did the funds come from to build the casinos, did the mob have influence as they did in Vegas? Would a boycott by all gamblers help the cause of the dis-enrolled? If the tribe members picket all the casinos it might make a dent in the intake. is this possible?
I have been attending all Pow Wow`s in North County since I moved here 16 years ago and I have grown to respect American Indians, especially since I have learned the treatment that they have been exposed to by the military and Washington D.C in the past. Like what happened in "Wounded Knee" etc. What is happening now with the tribes has nothing to do with the past. Or does it? Respectfully, /s/Angelo Caruso, San Marcos, Ca.
Editor’s Note: There is no evidence of any “mob money” being involved in the building of casinos. Boycotts would not likely be effective.
The only possible remedy is congressional legislation at both the federal and state level to open up the financial papers and provide oversight to the public - and to retrieve the powers the government ceded to the tribes.
Remember, though, the casinos have a HUGE treasurey and a fleet of attorneys and paid lobbyists who will lobby the legislators to maintain “status quo.” Unless Congress acts, it will be ‘business as usual’ and more and more Indians may expect to be disenrolled.

James Garfield: He Could Have Been Great
If he had lived, James Garfield could have been one of America’s most popular and successful presidents. Unfortunately, an assassin’s bullet struck him down. He barely served 200 days in office, much of it trying to recover from his gunshot wound. Today, there are street signs and schools bearing his name as the only reminder of his presidency.
James Abram Garfield, born Nov. 19, 1831, was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination later that year. Garfield had served nine terms in the House of Representatives from Ohio. He had been elected to the U.S. Senate before his candidacy for the White House, though he declined the Senate seat he had also won once he was elected President. He is the only sitting House member to be elected president.
ers; he saw Guiteau at least once and rebuffed him both times.
In those days, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln was deemed a fluke due to the Civil War, and Garfield, like most people, saw no reason why the president should be guarded; Garfield's movements and plans were often printed in the newspapers. Guiteau knew the president would leave Washington for a cooler climate. He purchased a gun he thought would look good in a museum, and followed Garfield several times, but each time was frustrated, or he lost his nerve. Guiteau’s opportunity came with Garfield's departure by train for New Jersey on the morning of July 2, 1881.
Garfield was deep in conversation with a cabinet member and did not notice Guiteau before he came up behind and shot the president twice. One shot glanced off his arm while the other pierced his back, shattering a rib and embedding itself in his abdomen. Ironically, among those at the station that morning was Robert Todd Lincoln, who 16 years before had watched his father die from an assassin's bullet. A noted physician and surgeon Willard Bliss, who was an old friend of Garfield, and about a dozen doctors, led by Bliss, were soon probing the wound with unsterilized fingers and instruments. Garfield might have survived his wounds had the doctors had modern medical research, techniques, and equipment. Standard practice at that time dictated priority be given to locating the path of the bullet. Several doctors inserted their unsterilized fingers into the wound to probe for the bullet, a common practice in the 1880s. Historians now agree that massive infection was a significant factor in President Garfield's death. Guiteau was indicted on Oct. 14, 1881, for the murder of the president and he was sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed on June 30, 1882.
Garfield entered politics as a Republican. He married Lucretia Rudolph in 1858, and served as a member of the Ohio State Senate (18591861). He served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and fought in the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh, and Chickamauga. He was first elected to Congress in 1862 to represent Ohio's 19th District. Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a disgruntled office seeker, at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881.
Guiteau had followed various professions in his life, but in 1880 had determined to gain federal office by supporting what he expected to be the winning Republican ticket. Guiteau, who considered himself a conservative Republican, deemed his contribution to Garfield's victory sufficient to justify the position of consul in Paris, despite the fact he spoke no French, nor any foreign language. One of President Garfield's more wearing duties was interviewing office seek-
Garfield finally died on Sept. 19, 1881, ending weeks of excruciating pain and suffering. Because Garfield was only president for some 200 days, most historians refrain from rating him against other presidents. However, before and during his life and time in the White House, Garfield was one of the most popular politicians and presidents of the 19th century.

Laura Strickler Reverse Mortgage Expert
ReverseMortgage Loans as a Smart Financial Tool
Today’s reverse mortgage loans are viable tools in retirement planning. Government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loans are backed by the FHA and are safer than ever. These loans are unique because the balance is deferred until the last eligible owner leaves the home, as long as all loan obligations are met. A reverse mortgage loan is highly regulated, just like most financial products. To qualify: • The borrower must be 62 years or older; • The home must be the borrower’s primary residence; • The borrower must have enough equity in the home to qualify; and • The borrower must undergo a financial assessment to ensure they are able to continue paying for property
taxes, homeowners insurance and home maintenance. HECM reverse mortgage loans have added safeguards that can help ensure that the borrower will be able to fulfill the loan terms for the life of the loan. These include: • An important advantage of an HECM loan is its non-recourse feature. That is, the home is the only collateral that can be used to repay the loan balance. This means if the sale of the home does not cover the entire loan balance, then the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) pays the difference, not the borrower’s family. • Prior to submitting an application, potential borrowers are required to undergo HUD-approved, independent third-party reverse mortgage counseling to ensure they understand the fine print, what they can expect throughout the loan process, what their responsibilities are, and what other options might be available to them. • HUD establishes caps on the amount of money that can be drawn during the first year of the loan to help ensure proceeds last as long as a borrower needs them.
with any other mortgage loan, as long as you maintain the home, pay property taxes and insurance and otherwise comply with the loan’s terms, you continue to own your property.
When the loan becomes due and payable When the last surviving borrower or non-borrowing spouse dies, leaves the home or otherwise does not comply with the loan terms, the loan becomes due and payable. An heir or the executor of the estate has the option to sell the property and use the proceeds to repay the loan. In this case, the remaining proceeds from the sale can be split among the heirs. The heirs also have the option to repay or refinance the loan and keep the home in the family. One of the most important advantages of a reverse mortgage loan is that it pays off any existing mortgage and eliminates monthly loan payments. This helps free up cash that would otherwise go toward a monthly mortgage payment while also providing the opportunity to supplement income, depending on the borrower’s specific situation. Home ownership explained With a reverse mortgage, the borrower retains ownership and the loan is secured by a lien on the home. The borrower does not relinquish the title or ownership using a reverse mortgage loan, but rather borrows against the value of the home’s equity. Just like

'Oh! Saints Alive! Ye scared me half to death, girl! I thought ye said a Protestant. Come here and give yer old dad a hug! ••••• A woman was having a daytime affair while her husband was at work. One rainy day she was in bed with her boyfriend when, to her horror, she heard her husband's car pull into the driveway. 'Oh my God - Hurry! Grab your clothes and jump out the window. My husband's home early!'
'I can't jump out the window. It's raining out there!'
'If my husband catches us in here, he'll kill us both!' she replied. 'He's got a hot temper and a gun, so the rain is the least of your problems!'
So the boyfriend scoots out of bed, grabs his clothes and jumps out the window! As he ran down the street in the pouring rain, he quickly discovered he had run right into the middle of the town's annual marathon, so he started running along beside the others, about 300 of them.
Being naked, with his clothes tucked under his arm, he tried to blend in as best he could. After a little while a small group of runners who had been watching him with some curiosity, jogged closer.
‘Do you always run in the nude?' one asked. 'Oh yes!' he replied, gasping in air. 'It feels so wonderfully free!' Another runner moved a long side. 'Do you always run carrying your clothes with you under your arm?'
'Oh, yes,' our friend answered breathlessly. 'That way I can get dressed right at the end of the run and get in my car to go home!'
Then a third runner cast his eyes a little lower and asked, 'Do you always wear a condom when you run?' 'Nope..just when it's raining.' ••••• The Republicans strongly believe in sex after marriage, but not with their wives. ••••• A woman stopped by, unannounced, at her son's house. She knocked on the door then immediately walked in. She was shocked to see her daughterin-law lying on the couch, naked. Soft music was playing, and the aroma of perfume filled the room.

A week later, the same redneck, along with a buddy, Bubba, pulled in for another fill-up. Again he asked for his free sex. The proprietor again asked him to guess the correct number. The redneck guessed 2 this time. The proprietor said, "Sorry, it was 3. You were close, but no free sex this time.”

St. Peter tells them that they are all welcome to play the course, but he cautions them that there is only one rule: Don't hit the ducks during your first three months here. The men all have blank expressions, and finally one of them asks, "The ducks?
"Yes," St. Peter replies, "There are thousands of ducks walking around the course, and if one gets hit, he quacks, then the one next to him quacks and soon they're all quacking to beat the band. It really breaks the tranquility, and if you hit one of the ducks, you'll be punished. Otherwise everything is yours to enjoy.”
Upon entering the course, the men noted that there were indeed large numbers of ducks everywhere. Within fifteen minutes, one of the guys hit a duck. The duck quacks, the one next to it quacked and soon here was a deafening roar of duck quacks. St. Peter walked up with an extremely homely woman in tow and asks, "Who hit the duck?” The guy who had done it admitted, "I did.” St. Peter immediately pulled out a pair of handcuffs and cuffed the man's right hand to the homely woman's left hand. "I told you not to hit the ducks," he said. Now you'll be handcuffed together for eternity.” The other two men were very cautious not to hit any ducks, but a couple of weeks later, one of them acci-

Governments, schools and large corporations swap out their existing computers for new ones every three or four years; it’s in their budgets. The three-four year replacement cycle in earlier days was a necessity; today it is an expensive and senseless reflex. The performance capabilities of four year old computers vs. new ones are essentially equal. Four year old PCs perform the required applications as efficiently as the new ones. While businesses are somewhat more cost conscious, government and school bureaucrats know that if they don’t spend all of this year’s budget, next year’s budget will be cut. They have little incentive to spend wisely.

When is a Good Time to Start Receiving Social Security Benefits? By Yolanda York Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in San Diego, CA
Enjoying a comfortable retirement is everyone’s dream. For over 80 years, Social Security has been helping people realize those dreams, assisting people through life’s journey with a variety of benefits. It’s up to you as to when you can start retirement benefits. You could start them a little earlier or wait until your “full retirement age.” There are benefits to either decision, pun intended. Full retirement age refers to the age when a person can receive their Social Security benefits without any reduction, even if they are still working part or full time. In other words, you don’t actually need to stop working to get your full benefits.
For people who attain age 62 in 2017 (i.e., those born between January 2, 1955, and January 1, 1956), full retirement age is 66 and two months. Full retirement age was age 65 for many years. However, due to a law passed by Congress in 1983, it has been gradually increasing, beginning with people born in 1938 or later, until it reaches 67 for people born after 1959. You can learn more about the full retirement age and find out how to look up your own at www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/retir e/retirechart.html. You can start receiving Social Security benefits as early as age 62 or any time

after that. The longer you wait, the higher your monthly benefit will be, although it stops increasing at age 70. Your monthly benefits will be reduced permanently if you start them any time before your full retirement age. For example, if you start receiving benefits in 2017 at age 62, your monthly benefit amount will be reduced permanently by about 26 percent. On the other hand, if you wait to start receiving your benefits until after your
full retirement age, then your monthly benefit will be higher. The amount of this increase is two-thirds of one percent for each month –– or eight percent for each year –– that you delay receiving them until you reach age 70. The choices you make may affect any benefit your spouse or children can receive on your record, too. If you receive benefits early, it may reduce their potential benefit, as well as yours.

You need to be as informed as possible when making any decision about receiving Social Security benefits. Read the publication When to Start Receiving Retirement Benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/EN-0510147.pdf. If you decide to receive benefits before you reach full retirement age, you should also understand how continuing to work can affect your benefits. Social Security may withhold or reduce your benefits if your annual earnings exceed a certain amount. However, for every month benefits are withheld, it increases your future benefits. That’s because at your full retirement age Social Security will recalculate your benefit amount to give you credit for the months in which benefits were reduced or withheld due to your excess earnings. In effect, it’s as if you hadn’t filed for those months. You can learn more at www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/retir e/whileworking.html.
Social Security’s mission is to secure your today and tomorrow. Helping you make the right retirement decisions is vital. Create a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount
