Whether they are of biblical proportions or not, this 3rd planet from the Sun which we call Earth has had no shortages of devastating plagues, deadly diseases, and other unspeakable and contagious horrors that have terrified people of all cultures, all hemispheres, and all creeds and racial backgrounds.

These true-life pandemics were not only horrifying diseases by themselves, but they once grew to such catastrophic proportions that they, The Paper - 760.747.7119

literally, instilled fears of completely wiping out our human species – totally -- from existence. Unimaginable epidemics such as cholera, bubonic plague, smallpox, and influenza were among some of the most brutal killers in human history. Terrifying plagues and diseases which triggered horrifying nightmares of impending doom for all the world.

WHICH EPIDEMIC WIPED OUT OVER HALF THE ENTIRE EUROPEAN POPULATION?

A. Polio B. HIV/AIDS C. The Black Death

Correct answer is “C” for The Black Death a.k.a. The Black Plague or simply The Great Plague. The Black Death (1347-1351) is believed to have originated in China. From there it ostensibly spread all along the trade routes to Constantinople and all of Europe, eventually devastating three continents in its deadly wake. The plague’s name comes from the black skin spots on the sailors who

travelled the Silk Road from their East Asian voyages, after which their ships docked at major European ports, where the deadly disease quickly spread to heavily populated areas. The Black Death epidemic decimated Europe and Asia in the mid1300s.

A QUICK KILLER. The Black Death bubonic plague was so devastating and so swift that from 1347 to 1351 (in a span of only four years) it erased as much as

half (some scholars say 60%) of the entire human population from the European landscape!

As dead bodies continued to be stacked high in huge piles, The Black Death spectre soon instilled fear throughout the entire world. To this very day, many have called it The Greatest Human Catastrophe Ever.

BLACK DEATH SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE WORLD’S POPULATION. In a time when the entire population of our planet Earth was estimated to be only around 450 million people – this brutal and horrifying pandemic claimed (at least) 75 million human beings.

More current estimates claim that the Black Death toll may have been as high as 200 million worldwide deaths. This is a most staggering proportion of human inhabitants that vanished: as many as 200 million dead, from an estimated global population of only 450 million people on the entire planet. This statistic is almost too intoxicating for the average person to truly comprehend in today’s world. To give another dizzying perspective: It took more than 200 years for Europe’s population to recover to its previous level after the Black

(Source: International Programs 2008, Historical Estimates of World Populations, International Data Base (IDB): http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/w orldhis.html) The plague recurred as outbreaks until the early 20th century. WHAT WAS THE ROOT CAUSE (PATHOGEN) OF THE BLACK DEATH? A. Cats B. Rats C. Fleas

Correct answer is “C” for fleas. The Black Death disease is said to have been caused by Oriental rat fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) infected with the Yersinia pestis bacterium. (The French biologist, Alexandre Yersin, discovered this germ at the end of the 19th century, after whom the pathogen “Yersinia pestis” was named.)

Both male and female fleas fed on rat blood and then transmitted the infection. Infected fleas living on rats (or other rodents) onboard merchant ships which docked at major ports near heavily-populated urban centers all contributed to the disease being quickly spread to humans. Later in time, the rats were not the only carriers of infected fleas and lice that spread the plague – it would become human beings, as well.

EARLIER DEVASTATING FORM OF THE BUBONIC PLAGUE. As if the European Black Death pandemic of the 1300s were not enough, centuries earlier, in the year 451, the bubonic plague had already struck in the form of “The Plague of Justinian,” leaving approximately 25 million people dead. The Plague of Justinian (a bubonic plague) spread from rats on Egyptian grain boats and spread very rapidly to the Eastern Roman Empire. Modern scholars estimate at one point as many as 5,000 died (each day) in Constantinople (the capitol city of the Eastern Roman Empire). By its end, about 40% of the city’s population lay dead. So many people died so quickly that bodies were left in piles – joined by ¼ of the eastern Mediterranean. Modern experts believe The Plague of Justinian to be the first (confirmed) case of the bubonic plague.

(Disclaimer: Due to the complexity and inaccuracy with recording causes of death on a global scale down through history, the totals listed below are only estimates based on available information and current databases. Also, this list is by no means complete, but only serves as a brief overview.) 1. THE ANTONINE PLAGUE (165 A.D.) 5 million estimated deaths. Also referred to as the Modern Plague, this form of bubonic plague started in China and in the next 20 years it spread around the world by rats that carried infected fleas onboard ships. According to the World Health Organization, the pandemic was considered still active until 1960 when worldwide casualties dropped to 200 per year. In the end, this pandemic ended the world for over 12 million human beings. 4. HIV/AIDS: 36 million estimated worldwide deaths (and still ongoing). First identified in the

5. CHOLERA. 40 million estimated worldwide deaths. Cholera is an acute “diarrhoel” infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium “Vibrio cholerae.” Seven cholera pandemics have occurred in the past 200 years. According to the World Health Organization, each year cholera infects 1.3 to 4 million people around the world, killing 21,000 to 143,000 people. Cholera is among the fastest killing diseases and can kill within hours if left untreated. Up to 80% of cases can be treated successfully with rehydration solution (ORS). Although cholera is classified as a pandemic as of 2010, it is rare in more developed (modern) countries.

6. SPANISH INFLUENZA (1918): 50 to 100 million estimated worldwide deaths. According to the World Health Organization, the Spanish Influenza of 1918 resulted in approximately 50 million human deaths. However, other experts on global pandemic fatalities rate the 1918-1920 Spanish Influenza as much deadlier, with an estimated

7. THE BLACK DEATH: Estimates range from 125 million to 200 million deaths worldwide. Deaths peaked from 1347 to 1351. (This pandemic is discussed in detail earlier in this article.)

8. SMALLPOX: 500 million estimated worldwide deaths. Smallpox is a contagious illness that has a mysterious origin. It extends back to prehistoric times, perhaps as far back as 10,000 to 12,000 B.C. Recently, tiny particles of the disease were discovered on an Egyptian mummy, identified as Pharaoh Ramses the V, who reigned from 1150-1145 B. C. According to academics, smallpox was one of the worst contagious killers. In just the 20th century alone, smallpox is estimated to have killed as many as 300 million human beings. This estimated number of 300 million human deaths from smallpox vastly exceeds the combined total number of deaths from all of our World Wars – put together! Historically, smallpox had a fatality rate of 30%, although its most severe forms were almost always fatal. According to the World Health Organization, the last (confirmed) diagnosed case of the smallpox disease which was (occurring naturally) was in 1977. According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence of (naturally-occurring) smallpox transmission anywhere in the world

9. TUBERCULOSIS: Over 2 billion estimated worldwide deaths. Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacteria and spread when a person with the active TB disease in their lungs coughs or sneezes and someone inhales the expelled droplets. Tuberculosis is, without doubt, one of history’s biggest and most feared global diseases. Research scientists suggest that as many as 1.5 billion people have died of tuberculosis just over the past two centuries. However, since tuberculosis has been around since ancient times, it remains uncertain just how many deaths tuberculosis has really claimed. In ancient Greece, tuberculosis (TB) was called “phthisis.” In ancient Rome, it was known as “tabes” and in the ancient Hebrew language, tuberculosis was called “schachepheth.” TB was commonly called “consumption” in 1800s America, even after the German professor of medicine, Johann Schonlein, named it “tuberculosis” in 1839. From ancient times to the Middle Ages all the way into today’s modern world, tuberculosis remains one of history’s all-time deadliest diseases. To this very day, TB remains one of the leading contagious diseases which causes adult mortality in the world. Officially, the World Health Organization estimates that approximately 1.8 billion people – close to

Dr. Robert Koch first discovered Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis, on March 24, 1882. Last year, over 1.5 million died of TB. 10. MALARIA: 50 billion estimated worldwide deaths. It is quite possible that malaria is the deadliest disease in human history. Malaria is reported to have wiped out half of all people who have ever lived on our planet. And continues to be a killer today. The overall death toll of malaria through history is so intoxicating to ponder that its overall impact on human life is difficult to fathom. Malaria is not contagious and you cannot catch it from physical contact with someone who has it. The only exceptions are through blood transfusions or organ transplants from a person infected with malaria. Malaria is not caused by a virus or bacteria. Malaria is caused by a parasite known as Plasmodium, and is normally spread through infected mosquitos. Considering the lack of effective treatment for malaria during earlier

Deadliest Plague Cont. from Page 3 times, and the fact that the disease has, allegedly, been with humanity for 500,000 years, it is little wonder that malaria has claimed so many human lives. Today, malaria has been eliminated from many developed (modern) countries. As I looked around the parking lot, I realized she was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all to my wife: "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen."

There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard her voice. "Are you kidding me?" she barked, "I dropped you off!" Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me then."

Still tobacco is a substantial reason that CVD reigns at the top. Also, lack of physical activity, then diet. Then, there are ‘other’ factors and risks: childhood, rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease, blood pressure, genetics, being a woman, socio-economic status.” World-renowned cardiologist, C. Michael Valentine, M.D., from the Cardiovascular Center in Lynchburg, Virginia, agrees totally with Sophia Brock’s assessment on both cause and prevention being of paramount importance. As Dr. Valentine expresses: “Nearly half of all Americans have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or smoke – some of the leading factors for heart disease – but these are often preventable or modifiable risk factors that we can all work to reduce.” The current worldwide alarm regarding the now-pandemic coronavirus disease known as COVID19, has begat a growing number of Americans who either suspect, distrust, or question reports from government and health officials because of their, sometimes, “conflicting” reports and information. I then left it alone and went about my business. While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the neighbor boy across the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the stop sign right in front of our house.

After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still sitting there in the wheelchair, right where I had left it. It hadn't rolled itself outside. It certainly hadn't killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so. In fact, it hadn't even loaded itself.

Well you can imagine my surprise, with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they kill people. Either the media is wrong, and it's the misuse of guns by PEOPLE that kills people, or I'm in possession of the laziest gun in the world. Alright, well I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making people fat. •••• God created Iowa God was missing for six days.

God smiled deeply and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look, Michael. Look what I've made." Archangel Michael looked puzzled, and said, "What is it?"

It's a planet," replied God, “and I've put life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a place to test Balance.”

"Balance?" inquired Michael, "I'm still confused."

God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth. "For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over here I've placed a continent of white people, and over there is a continent of black people. Balance in all things." God continued pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice." The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a land area and said, "What's that one?" "That's Iowa, the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful rolling hills and prairies, rivers and streams, lakes, forests, hills, and the plains." Then God Said,

At the time that this cover story was filed on March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization reported at 9 a.m. (Pacific Standard Time) that there were 121,564 cases reported worldwide of the coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19, with 4,373 worldwide deaths, along with 65,105 people who have completely recovered from the disease worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared COVID-19 a global pandemic with the coronavirus disease affecting more than 115 countries and territories around the world.

In the United States, alone, the World Health Organization has reported over 1,000 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus disease, along with 32 confirmed deaths and with one confirmed case now in San Diego County. According to the World Health Organization: “The number of cases and deaths change by the hour.” And now, our exclusive interview with Escondido’s Dr. Thomas Lee Watson.

THE PAPER: Dr. Watson, as a family practitioner, what precautionary and prevention guidelines should our schools be implementing to meet the current coronavirus threat? Should school health officials put into place student hygiene guidelines, face masks, medical stations to monitor symptoms, and provide “questions-and-answers” to help calm student fears with facts, instead of misinformation which can cause panic? DR. WATSON: First and foremost, each (school) principal needs to keep informed about the spread of COVID-19. Each class should hold an open house for the parents to share information and ask questions. Answers should align with the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) knowledge and recommendations. Beyond that, teachers should remind their students to sneeze or cough into their arm and with close proximity to their mouth. Frequent hand washing should be encouraged. So far, the good news is that kids, especially under nine-years of age seem to have a robust immune system which mitigates (reduces or lessens) severe illness. Face masks aren’t indicated unless a child is suspected of having the virus, then a mask should be placed and the principal should notify their local ER or CDC for instructions. The kids should be kept in their classrooms until notified otherwise by the CDC. THE PAPER: As a well-established and respected family medical doctor, are children and the elderly

"This is Iowa , the center of America . The people of Iowa are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to travel the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, high achieving, carriers of peace, and producers of good things." Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then asked, "But what about balance, God? You said there would be balance."

God smiled, "I will create Washington, D.C. Wait till you see the idiots I put there." •••• How old is Grandma? Stay with this -- the answer is at the end...

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: ' television ' penicillin ' polio shots ' frozen foods ' Xerox ' contact lenses ' Frisbees and ' the pill There were no: ' credit cards ' laser beams or ' ball-point pens Man had not yet invented: ' pantyhose ' air conditioners ' dishwashers ' clothes dryers ' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and ' man hadn't yet walked on the moon

Your Grandfather and I got married first, and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir." And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir." We were before gayrights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors

Get the Lead Out

California requires testing children considered at greatest risk for lead poisoning, which includes those enrolled in Medi-Cal and other programs for low-income children. We recently learned that over a nineyear period, DHCS did not ensure that millions of children were tested properly. Nearly half of 2.9 million eligible one-and two-year-old children were not tested at all, and another 740,000 missed one of the two required tests! As a member of Assembly Health Committee, I participated in a hearing of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to review findings by the California State Auditor about programs for children at high-risk for lead poisoning. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) oversees the statewide lead prevention program, and the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) oversees testing children for lead poisoning. Unfortunately, the results of the audit were not encouraging.

Children under the age of six are extremely vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead poisoning. Even a slight elevation in blood lead levels (BLL) can stunt development and lower a child’s IQ. Lead exposure

can lead to brain and nervous system damage, learning and behavior problems, hearing and speech impediments, along with other lifelong health problems. Obviously, much more needs to be done. Laboratories must report contact information along with the lead tests to support CDPH efforts to contact families and monitor results. DHCS must adopt performance standards to identify children needing the required tests and to remind providers to make those tests. The legally mandated CDPH analysis of at-risk areas of the state should be publicized so that reducing risks in those areas gets priority attention. CDPH and DHCS are on notice -- the Auditor will be watching for progress over the coming months. The well-being of millions of California children is at stake. Let’s eliminate lead poisoning once and for all. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Coronavirus Update

Jim Desmond

Our world has certainly changed this past week and as I write this I understand much more could change by the time you read this. I did want to give you an update on what San Diego County is doing regarding the Coronavirus.

All public or private gatherings over 250 people are prohibited in San Diego County, through the month of March. Gatherings of less than 250 people are strongly encouraged to keep a social distance of 6 feet from one another in conformance with California Department of Public Health guidelines. Non-essential personnel are also prohibited from entry into any hospital or long-term care facility serving seniors. This order is issued based on increasing transmission of COVID-19 in California and San Diego County.

Schools, colleges and care facilities serving seniors and children are strongly encouraged to follow the guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health and San Diego County Public Health Officials. Please look to your local school district for further information. San Diego County Officials are

strongly encouraging citizens over the age of 65 to cancel any nonessential travel, avoid large crowds and remain at home, if possible.

This is very fluid situation and we will continue to update as more information becomes available.

truthfully more in danger if they contract the coronavirus disease (COVID-19)? Please explain.

DR. WATSON: At this time, the elderly with underlying upper respiratory disease (COPD, asthma, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis) are at the most risk. As mentioned above, kids are low risk at this time.

THE PAPER: What are the real symptoms of coronavirus? How long after exposure do these symptoms realistically begin to appear?

DR. WATSON: The incubation period for COVID-19 is anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks. The early symptoms are fever and shortness of breath.

THE PAPER: How deadly is the coronavirus disease? How does it compare to the current influenza (flu) threat which we are also experiencing in the United States today? DR. WATSON: At this time, we really don’t know how deadly this virus is going to be. So far it appears to be more lethal than the seasonal flu. How lethal will be determined over time. This is the problem. We don’t have much information about this virus and we are scrambling to get a better handle on it.

THE PAPER: Is there currently no cure for the coronavirus disease? Is there a shortage of coronavirus “medical tests” and related medical supplies which we hope to make more available for the public?

DR. WATSON: At this time there is no accepted cure for the virus. There has been some chatter in the medical community that some of the antiviral medications for HIV may lessen the severity. Additionally, there is consideration for obtaining the antibodies against this virus from survivors to help lessen the severity as well. A vaccine will be produced, but getting it to the people will be 12 to 18 months out. Tests for the COVID19 are in short supply currently. Hopefully, more will be made available in the next coming weeks. The CDC has criteria currently for which patients should be tested. This criteria will surely change as more testing swabs are made available. THE PAPER: (A) Can a person catch the coronavirus disease by eating food that was prepared by an infected person (with COVID-19), such as at a school cafeteria or fastfood restaurant or any eating establishment? (B) Can coronavirus be spread through refrigerated or frozen foods that was handled/prepared by an infected person?

as the evening breeze started. Timesharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends\not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD's, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5&10-cent (5 and dime) stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day:' "grass" was mowed, ' "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in and ' "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. ' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, ' "chip" meant a piece of wood, ' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and. ' "software" wasn't even a word. We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. We volunteered to protect our precious country. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap. How old do you think I am?”

by Tom Morrow

Aviation Author, Airline CEO, and Comic Strip writer PART II

This is the second of a two-part feature column on World War I ace fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker.

Eddie Rickenbacker was a national voice to be reckoned with in the first half of the 20th century. During the 1930s, Rickenbacker was adamantly opposed to then-President Franklin Roosevelt's “New Deal” policies, calling them little better than “socialism.” For this, the American hero drew criticism and ire from the press and the Administration. Roosevelt tried to muffle him by ordering NBC Radio not to allow Rickenbacker to broadcast opinions critical of the president’s policies.

From 1935 to 1940, Rickenbacker scripted a popular comic strip called “Ace Drummond.” He worked with aviation artist Clayton Knight, who illustrated the series. The strip followed the adventures of aviator Drummond and later was adapted into a film serial and radio program.

Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time. Are you ready?

Editor’s Noe: (Well, yeah, but ... the analogy suffers a bit in that if granny had been born in 1952 people were living together without benefit of marriage in 1972 . . . and a lot of the goodies were available by then as well . . panty hose, for example . . and folks were resisting and avoiding military service, and protesting wars . . .rock music and coke and grass were certainly prevalent in the 1970's . . . but, still, it's a cute piece and makes a point about the changing of eras . . . but it's not 100% accurate. - just an observation from on older fella who was around during these time frames -

Historically Speaking

“The doctor says he’ll see the gentleman with the coronavirus first.”

Rickenbacker's most lasting business involvement was his longtime leadership of Eastern Air Lines. In the thirties he persuaded General Motors to purchase aviation assets which included Eastern Air Transport. In April 1938, after learning GM was considering selling Eastern, Rickenbacker bought the company for $3.5 million.

On a business flight Feb. 26, 1941, he was a passenger on an airliner that crashed just outside of Atlanta. Rickenbacker suffered grave injuries. In spite of his own critical wounds, Rickenbacker encouraged the other passengers who were injured or dying, and persuaded the ambulatory survivors to find help. They were rescued after spending the night at the crash site, but Rickenbacker barely survived. It wouldn’t be the last time the press prematurely announced his death.

When Rickenbacker arrived at a hospital, his injuries appeared so grotesque the emergency physicians left him for dead. Rickenbacker's injuries included a fractured skull, other head injuries, a shattered left elbow with a crushed nerve, a paralyzed left hand, several broken ribs, a crushed hip socket, a pelvis broken in two places, a severed nerve in his left hip, and a broken left

knee. Rickenbacker's left eyeball was also blown out of its socket. It took him many months to recuperate.

But, his dance with death wasn’t over. Rickenbacker's most famous neardeath experience occurred in October 1942, when the War Department sent him to the Pacific to review both living conditions and operations of U.S. air bases, but also to personally deliver a secret message of rebuke to Gen. Douglas MacArthur from Secretary of War Henry Stimson. The message regarded negative public comments MacArthur had made about the administration and disparaging cables sent to Chief of Staff Gen. George Marshall.

After visiting several air and sea bases in Hawaii, Rickenbacker was provided a B-17 bomber as transportation across the South Pacific. Out of fuel, the bomber strayed off course and was forced to ditch in a remote part of the Central Pacific, but close to Japaneseheld islands. Luckily they were never spotted by enemy patrol planes. For 23 days, Rickenbacker and nine crewmen drifted in life rafts. He was still suffering from his earlier airplane crash. Their food supply ran out after three days. On the eighth day, a seagull landed on Rickenbacker's head, which he cautiously captured it. The survivors divided it into equal parts, but keeping a portion for fishing bait. They lived on sporadic rain water that fell and similar food "miracles", like fingerlings caught with their bare hands. The Army and Navy planned to abandon the search after two weeks, but Rickenbacker's wife persuaded them to extend it another week. Once again, the newspapers and radio broadcasts reported Rickenbacker was dead. Upon rescue, the survivors were suffering from hyperthermia, sunburn, dehydration, and near-starvation, but Rickenbacker dutifully delivered his message from Stimson to MacArthur. The content has never been made public. Rickenbacker wrote a survivor’s book titled “Seven Came Through.”

Back in Washington, D.C., Rickenbacker suggested a fact-finding mission in the Soviet Union to provide the Soviets with needed technical assistance for the American aircraft sent to them via the “Lend-Lease” program but he avoided requesting help from President Roosevelt.

Rickenbacker's trip in the spring and summer of 1943 took him along the South Atlantic air route traveling to Cairo in a plane provided by Air Corps Gen. Henry “Hap” Arnold. From Egypt he traveled to India and flew a “Hump” airlift over the Himalaya Mountains into China. Rickenbacker's mission to the USSR was successful. He learned about Soviet defense strategies, including memorizing a map showing front line Soviet unit locations. Rickenbacker also persuaded the Soviets to give him a tour of an aircraft factory. When he returned home, Rickenbacker received the Medal for Merit, the civilian equivalent to the U.S. military Legion of Merit. For a time in the fifties Eastern was the most profitable U.S. airline, but company fortunes declined and in 1959, Rickenbacker was forced out as CEO. He died on July 23, 1973. At the memorial service the eulogy was given by U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle. At that time, Rickenbacker was the last living air corps Medal of Honor recipient of WWI.

NEXT WEEK: The ‘Spanish Flu’ Pandemic of 1918.

INNOVATION IS HELPING US KEEP COMM MUNITIES SAFE

We didn’t invent drones, but we were one of the first utilities to use them to help keep our communities safe and assist in wildfire prevention effor ts. With a service area of more than 4,100 square miles to protect, drone technology allows us to inspect hard-to-reach power line poles, monitor wildfire conditions, pinpoint the cause of power outages and more. We know that with the delivery of power comes great responsibility. We’re always looking for new ways to protect our communities from the threat of wildfires. Your safety will always be our highest priority.

Humane Society Hosts Virtual Kitten Shower - Each year the San Diego Humane Society prepares for a very busy Spring Baby Season by hosting a Virtual Kitten Shower. The supplies from the Kitten Shower will help thousands of orphaned kittens that will rely on SDHS's 24-hour kitten nursery. The Shower began on March 10th and will help them care for more than 3,500 fragile, young kittens this year. The SDHS gratefully accepts donations of items including kitten formula, bottles, heating pads, scales and nursing kits. Supplies can be dropped off at any of SDHS's locations and more information about the Kitten Shower can be found at sdhumane.org/kiitten-shower as well as the complete Amazon baby registry information and those items can be sent directly to the Kitten Nursery. "In the coming months, thousands of kittens will come through out doors who require 24-hour care," said Jackie Noble, Nursery Manager, "We rely on the generosity of our community to ensure that each one gets the shelter, nourishment, medical care, and love they need to thrive."

SDHS’s Kitten Nursery was the first of its kind in the country, providing around-the-clock care for kittens. Before the 24-hour Kitten Nursery was established in 2009, many

orphaned kittens were in danger of euthanasia because of a lack of resources required to care for them, but today, these fragile kittens have the chance to grow, thrive and be adopted at SDHS.

for members of Mariposa Clubhouse, 1701 Mission Avenue, Suite 120, Oceanside 92058. Part of the Willow Tree Center's mission is to serve the locally under-served. There is evidence that slow, mindful yoga is beneficial in reducing stress and improving physical, mental and emotional health. However, the expense of these classes and other wellness programs simply is not in the budget of the majority of people in North County. The good news is that as we increase the number of healthy lifestyle classes to this segment of the population the better chance they will have of connecting their passion and purpose, which links effective self-awareness to personal and social change. RespectAbility Celebrating Women's History Month - Women with disabilities dramatically outpace men with disabilities in job gains. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, women with disabilities have particular reasons to celebrate. Comparing the annual disability statistics, the nonpartisan disability inclusion organization RespectAbility shows that approximately 108,000 women with disabilities entered the workforce in 2018. This is a major accomplishment given that the disability community writ large struggled nationwide to add more workers to the economy. In fact, during the same time period, 94,749 working-age males with disabilities left the workforce. This means, in terms of job growth, there was just an increase of 29,893 jobs for people with disabilities in 2018, a ten-fold decrease compared to the more than 343,000 new jobs for peo-

The internet has changed our lives in so many ways. We can download things for free, get most anything we need on Amazon and interact with others with a few clicks on our keyboard. We can offer up our opinion on almost anything from politics, family, culture and more. Suddenly, we can all be journalists and bloggers. Social media can be a break from every day life. We can look at funny pet photos, discuss the news, wish someone a happy birthday. It’s great…kinda.

We can also lose our temper, use no “filter”, and even be mean at times.

How we use our influence is so important. Our reputation is on the line. Our “Likes” can say a lot about us. Experts can track and tell a lot about us by our posts. Marketers know more about you than you realize. I suspect what we SAY probably stays in cyberspace permanently. If you happen to be a person of faith, stop and ask “What would God “like”. Would He approve of your latest comments? Remember, your reputation is on the line. All of could benefit from “taming our tongue” and James advice in the Bible is helpful. He said “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry”. (Harder said than done… right?).

All of us can have good experience in social media if we practice some forethought and avoid some common pitfalls. It might help if we think before we post. Ask if what we are saying is inspiring, kind, encouraging. Above all, would God “like” our post? If the answer is yes, you are on your way to setting a good example.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido,

The COVID 19 virus has been dominating the news of late. The question is what is the appropriate response from the government. For us as a city, health is really a county issue, and there are plans in place at that level. But that doesn’t mean the city has no responsibility.

I’m pleased to report that our city staff, without much fanfare, has quietly and prudently adjusted procedures for things like virus screening, emergency response, communications to the public, etc. all making sure the city is in step or ahead of county and state direction.

Additionally, the city has kept in place the protocols of the Hep A breakout a few years ago. You might recall they included things like power washing public washrooms with disinfectant, putting out hand wash stations, etc. I thought this decision was a great piece of proactive vice reactive thinking. I have every confidence that we will survive this storm, working together as a community. Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido, pmcnamara@escondido.org

Need Help with Taxes?

Tax season is here and volunteers are ready to assist you.

The City is partnering with AARP in offering free tax help at the McClellan Senior Center to the public, with priority given to seniors. The Senior Center is located at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, adjacent to Brengle Terrace Park. Appointments are available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays by calling 760.643.5290, drop-ins are welcome.

The free service runs through April 12. Speaking of the Senior Center, if you have a few hours to spare once a month or each week, think about becoming a volunteer driver for the Center. Volunteers are a vital component of this program and are needed to provide a friendly smile and to shuttle the seniors to their destinations. Information is online at CityofVista.com or by contacting the Senior Center at 760.639.6160.

by turning 90 degrees to the left or right and aiming the eruption toward the ground where, presumably, the local micro-fauna will quickly dispatch any offending pathogens. We’re Huggers!

Yep it’s true. We are huggers and hand shakers. We both grew up in Indiana where hand shaking is standard at formal introductions but hugging is mandatory in all subsequent encounters. Male to male hugging is accompanied by vigorous back slapping and male to female hugging requires a quick cheek to cheek press. Brush kissing is acceptable though not mandatory. Joe Biden style “hair sniffing” is never tolerated. Manual nose and tooth picking along with crotch, eye and ear scratching are acceptable social behaviors. Polite coughing and sneezing protocols are executed

would put you at risk for contracting the virus. Interestingly, the virus can live at temperatures of around 4 degrees Celsius for up to a month. THE PAPER: Is the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) only spread from person-to-person? And if so, how is it spread from one person to another? Or can the coronavirus disease also be spread (indirectly) by touching doorknobs or tabletops, etc. which an infected person may have sneezed on earlier? DR. WATSON: If an infected person goes outside in public, that person will have the ability to spread the virus by various means. Any person within 6-feet of this person when he/she sneezes or coughs without covering the mouth would be at risk. Additionally, if this person wipes their nose or coughs into their hand, any surface they subsequently touch becomes infected and remains that way for about ten days. Surface disinfection with 0.1% sodium hypochlorite or 62-71% ethanol significantly reduces coronavirus infectivity on surfaces within 1 minutes.

THE PAPER: (A) Can coronavirus be spread to family pets, such as a dog or cat? (B) Can pets spread coronavirus to humans? (Some people have imported dogs out of China, from shelters and various

Back home, folks making the heroic effort to drag themselves from their sick beds to the workplace are lauded for their devotion to duty and loyalty to their employer. Sure everyone in the office catches the bug, but we all soldier on and very few of us actually die. One advantage of the constant exposure to infection in our formative years is that our youthful and vigorous immune systems were exposed to nearly every communicable disease. Mumps, Chicken Pox, Flu, Leprosy, Syphilis and AIDS, bring it on. By the time we reach the point in life where our immune systems begin to fade we have already built the army of anti-bodies needed to protect and preserve us through our declining years. Thanks to our germ riddled Hoosier heritage, neither Nome nor I have missed a day of work it the past 15 years. That was then and this is now. Times have change and we’re no longer in Indiana. We are totally on board with the California communicable disease defense mental-

rescue places). DR. WATSON: At this time, it is unknown and unlikely that humans can transmit the virus to dogs. Although China has released information that they have one case where this has happened. Again, at this time, it seems unreasonable that the human virus can mutate this quickly to infect canines. As far as animals passing the virus to humans is still controversial. Early on, Chinese bats were thought to be the source, then it was the pangolin. (Editorial note: pangolins are insect-eating mammals with tough overlapping scales, sometimes referred to as scaly anteaters). Nevertheless, scientists still believe an as-yet-unidentified animal was responsible for transmitting the coronavirus to humans. To date, there is no evidence that the family pet can transmit the virus to their humans. The rescue efforts to adopt dogs from China have come to a halt. Not due to transmission fears, but logistical hold-ups.
