Most especially, yes! In fact, several American presidents have proven to be highly-talented musicians!

President, Andrew Jackson, along with his wife, Rachel, were both highly-skilled guitar (and banjo) players and hosted some of the greatest “hootenannies” (music parties) during their era. All of which greatly popularized the guitar with the American public.

Some observers even credit both Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachel, for “planting the seeds of Nashville’s music tradition a century before the ‘Grand Ole Opry’ even existed!

Boudreaux, the smoothest-talking Cajun in the Louisiana National Guard, got called up to active duty.

Boudreaux's first assignment was in a military induction center.

Because he was a good talker, they assigned him the duty of advising new recruits about government benefits, especially the GI insurance to which they were entitled.

The officer in charge soon noticed that Boudreaux was getting a 99% sign-up rate for the more expensive supplemental form of GI insurance. This was remarkable, because it cost these lowincome recruits $30.00 per month for the higher coverage, compared to what the government was already providing at no charge. The officer decided he'd sit in the back of the room at the next briefing and observe Boudreaux's sales pitch.

S. President and his Hermitage home!

Vice President Al Gore was there when Gibson Musical Instruments unveiled the Andrew Jackson guitars salvaged from the tornado debris: “I would like to thank Gibson guitars for turning the debris of devastation into beautiful instruments of inspiration!”

No other U. S. President popularized – nor loved the guitar – more than Old Hickory and his wife, Rachel. to Afghanistan an' gets youself killed, da govment' pays you benefishery $20,000. WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT PLAYED THE MOST INSTRUMENTS? A. Thomas Jefferson.

It was Ulysses S. Grant (“B” above) who made the enigmatic statement: “I only know two tunes. One of them is Yankee Doodle and the other isn’t.”

The often irrational, tone-deaf President Grant was one of the leastmusical American presidents in U. S. history.

So, who was the American president who, remarkably, played the most musical instruments? Well, if you selected “C” (Warren G. Harding), you are absolutely correct!

Though not the best of politicians, Warren G. Harding was, by far, the most musical in the sense that he was adept at playing more instruments than any other American president, then and now. With some justification, Harding often bragged, “I played every instrument but the slide trombone and the E-flat coronet.”

(Clarification: Warren G. Harding did play the coronet, but not the E-flat coronet, in particular. At age 18, his Citizens’ Cornet Band won 3rd place and $200 at the Ohio State Band Festival.)

Nonetheless, Harding’s exaggerated boast of playing every instrument except for two is not, under scrutiny, entirely correct in that there were other instruments he also did not play. However, he did master a widerange of instruments including brass,

Biology Class Final Exam

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk,' worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. He wrote: 1. It is perfect formula for the child.

2. It provides immunity against several diseases.

3. It is always the right temperature.

4. It is inexpensive.

5. It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa.

6. It is always available as needed.

And then, the student was stuck.

Finally, in desperation, just before the bell indicating the end of the test rang, he wrote...

woodwind, reed, string, keyboard, and percussion, which remains unsurpassed to this day by any other American president. Warren G. Harding’s fascination and unending enthusiasm to learn and master as many instruments as possible during his lifetime was truly astounding. He even learned to play a unique instrument known as the “sousaphone,” which was developed by famed American composer and “March King,” John Philip Sousa. When our 29th president seemed to be running short of instruments to master he went so far as to have an electric player piano made by the A. B. Chase Piano Company, from Norwalk, Ohio. He quickly mastered that keyboard instrument as well!

As a gimmick, he even played the tuba at the 1920 Democratic convention to celebrate his own nomination.

He also organized bands which played at both the Democratic and Republican Party rallies. Although Warren G. Harding is, historically, ranked very low as one of our worst U. S. Presidents in history, our 29th president did play more instruments than another American president.

Unfortunately, Harding’s musical genius and aptitude did not translate well into political wisdom.

If you selected “C” Bill Clinton, you are quite the musical scholar! Our 42nd President, Bill Clinton, was so skilled as a young tenor saxophone player that he won “first chair” position in Arkansas’s All-State Band while attending Hot Springs High School, and even considered music as a career!

Believe it or not, Bill Clinton, as well as many political analysts of the day, even claimed that his musicianship may have actually helped him win the presidential election!

Sound crazy?

As a presidential candidate in 1992, Bill Clinton was trailing in the polls behind incumbent president, George H. W. Bush, when Clinton was told by one of his political strategists to try a radically different approach to television exposure: depart from the overly-serious political format shows and news conferences and, instead, appear on more popular “grassroots American” television, targeting the young, trend-setting voters – on their own turf.

Still trailing in the polls, Clinton’s campaign advisors urged him to “take the plunge and gamble.”

It happened on Wednesday evening, June 3, 1992 when presidential candidate, Bill Clinton, walked onto the set of the hugely-popular youth-oriented television program “The Arsenio Hall

So, in that context, we attracted the children of parents who were watching Johnny Carson. So, because we were not a threat to Carson’s demographics, we were not hated by the Carson Regime.”

At the time, The Arsenio Hall Show had a very powerful demographic audience of young, voting-age viewers, of all races and ethnic backgrounds, and the nightly television show was aptly nicknamed a “Night Thing” by its viewers because the show resembled more a party, or nightclub atmosphere – all of which attracted the “MTV Generation.”

Deadline Nears for Kids Kaleidoscope Art Show The deadline for the Escondido Art Association’s Kids Kaleidoscope Art Show is approaching. Drop-off dates for artwork at the Artists Gallery are Saturday, March 31, 2018 from 11:00 am--4:00 pm and Monday, April 2, 4:00-6:00 p.m. The show, open to kids ages 5 through 18, showcases young artists in North County San Diego and presents the winners with ribbons and cash prize awards. Artwork will be judged in the following age groups: K-5, Gr. 6-8, and Gr. 9-12. There are no entry fees to compete and one entry per student is permitted. Awards will be given in each of the age groups for First Place, Second Place, Third Place and Honorable Mention, and all age groups compete for the “Best of Show” $50.00 cash award. As Mandy Grunwald (Clinton’s media advisor) explains: “The convention wasn’t until July, so we had five or six weeks and very little money. We realized that people needed to know more about Bill Clinton. So I had written a memo saying we ought to do these kinds of ‘softer’ talk shows.”

Bill Clinton’s chief strategist, Paul Begala, recalls the moment: “When we got there, Arsenio looked at Clinton’s very boring striped tie and said, ‘Man, you can’t wear that on my show!’ Then, Arsenio Hall disappeared, came back, and gave Clinton some loud yellow tie.”

The entire experience of being absorbed in a younger, different youth-culture with off-setting social values, proved contagious for Clinton’s political strategist Paul Begala, who also stood on the Arsenio Hall set that day, prior to show-time. Begala, vividly remembers: “I reached into my pocket and pulled out my Ray-Ban Wayfarers (sunglasses) and said, ‘Governor, you’ve got to wear my sunglasses.’

He looked at senior chief strategist, James Carville who said to Clinton, ‘Governor, anything pre-Beatles, I decide. Anything post-Beatles, Paul (Begala) decides. This is a postBeatles call.’”

Beatles call: “All right. We’ll wear the sunglasses!”

Well, that singular powerhouse appearance endeared Bill Clinton, overnight, to a vast viewing audience and according to political pundits of the time: “That performance appears to have proved a powerful turning point in the campaign! Bill Clinton would pass the incumbent President George H. W. Bush in the polls – for the very first time -- shortly after that televised segment!”

These hidden slices of drama and behind-the-scenes secrets, all revealed the true power of music which can entrance and endear a multitude of people to the point of (perhaps) electing a new leader of the Western World, who was just previously behind in the polls!

A historic event which, ostensibly, rendered George H. W. Bush a oneterm U. S. president.

So say many political pundits, who continue to cite this pivotal poll-turning musical event as such: “Today in TV History: Bill Clinton and His Sax Visit on the Arsenio Hall Show.”

President Bill Clinton later stated: “Those sunglasses – they became famous! So I donated them to the Clinton Library.”

Two children sparked a small fire in an Escondido church on Sunday after finding a lighter in a classroom there, fire officials said.

Escondido firefighters and police were dispatched just before 1 p.m.

Sunday in response to a report of a possible structure fire somewhere near South Escondido Boulevard and West Seventh Avenue, Battalion Chief Mike Bertrand said.

Officers arrived on scene first and discovered the blaze was inside the Iglesia Bautista Fundamental meeting house at 221 West Seventh Ave.

“Officers ensured that the building had been evacuated, as church services had just concluded, and confirmed that the fire was located in a second floor classroom,'' Bertrand said. “Escondido fire units arrived on scene and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin.''

Crews knocked down the flames in eights minutes, Bertrand said.

Five engines and one water truck responded, and no firefighters or churchgoers were injured. A fire investigator responded to the scene and determined that two children started the blaze with a lighter they found in the classroom, Bertrand said. Fire officials said the incident is a reminder to ensure matches and lighters are stored safely and that all

"Well," I thought, "that's not good."

Wednesday morning I had awakened with a pain in my upper left chest. On a pain scale of 1-10, it was about a 5. I took a nitroglycerin tablet and went back to bed, sleeping in till about 10am.

The pain was gone.

I had breakfast and then met Evelyn to assist in folding and mailing this week's edition of The Paper to our subscribers.

Noticed another pain develop; this time right below the sternum (center of the chest). On a pain scale it was about 23. I decided it was something of a temporary nature but, to her credit, Evelyn insisted I head to Kaiser Permanente's Urgent Care Clinic in San Marcos. Ever her obedient servant, I complied Three separate electrocardiograms came back negative but the doctor thought

Suspect Shot and Killed

A man fleeing from law enforcement officers was shot and killed at the Valley View Casino in Valley Center on Saturday night.

Escondido police officers responded to a complaint near Timber Glen south of Vista Verde Way. They noticed a vehicle leaving the area and attempted to pull it over but the driver sped away resulting in a pursuit that went through Escondido and into the Valley Center area, terminating at Valley View Casino.

Escondido police requested assistance from both San Diego Count Sheriff ’s deputies as well as the San Pasqual Tribal police. The suspect halted his vehicle at the valet service area in front of Valley View Casino.

When confronted by the officers a round of gunfire broke out, hitting the suspect. A gun was found at the scene.

He was transported to an area hospital but succumbed to his gunshot injuries

Stolen Car Crashes - Two Die

Sheriff ’s deputies pursued a stolen car from Escondido. The Honda Accord was speeding and due to both speed and inclement weathere, deputies called off the pursuit at 12:45a am. However, the fleeing car continued on at a high rate of speed and slammed head on into another vehicle, a compact car.

The driver and a passenger in the stolen Honda Accord both died; a third man in the car was injured but, so far, has survived. The driver of the compact car was also injured and taken to the hospital.

A sheriff ’s helicopter aided in the pursuit. Names of the killed and injured have not been releases as of press time.

Traditionally, law enforcement waits to release names of victims until such time as family members have been notified.

A cardiac catheterization was ordered; I was ambulanced down at 5:30 am to Scripps Clinic in La Jolla. My Kaiser cardiologist told me that Dr. Jeffrey Cavendish, a med school graduate from Georgetown University (one of the best) would be doing the procedure and he was the Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab - the best in the business. This gave me much comfort.

I was the number two patient on Friday morning so was in the lab at 8:15am.

While waiting all Thursday, Friday morning and post-op Friday, I was given the finest medical attention by the greatest people on earth, the doctors and nurses of both Kaiser Permanente, Palomar Medical Center and Scripps Catheterization Clinic.

After recovering, a Nurse Practitioner, with a great big smile on her face, advised me that she had good news. I had a blockage but it was only about 10% but, for a man my age (I'm slightly younger than Methusalah) that was a good sign. Medical staff agreed that I had NOT, in fact, had a heart attack.

The signs were there but they could find no damage to the heart muscle so it meant they were gonna actually release me back into polite society.

Bottom line: You're stuck with me awhile longer To those with whom I had business

So, while she’s gone it has fallen to me to put on mascara, lip gloss, high heels and bra . . . and assume the role of The Social Butterfly. Yes, I am writing this week’s Social Butterfly column. Any errors or omissions are mine and not Ms. Evelyn’s.

Evelyn is also our proof reader; since she won’t be here to proof this week’s paper you will no doubt find a typo or two. She’s sharp as a tack and catches most of my errors.

Dunno how I could ever get along without her.

••••• I hope I didn’t embarrass Charlie Mitich last week. Charlie owns Charlie’s Restaurant in Escondido.

Charlie had also visited the hospital and had a surgical procedure involving his heart. I was worried sick about him so when I heard the surgery was a success and he was back home resting, and then when I saw him last week in his restaurant chatting with a customer, I was so overjoyed at seeing him again that I hugged him.

If you picked correctly on this one, you better purchase a “Quick Pick” lottery ticket, seriously! Because if you selected, “A” Jimmy Carter, well, you’re right on the money!

Jimmy Carter, the second oldest of 6 living U. S. President at age 93 (he is less than 4 months younger than George H. W. Bush), has a most humorous story to relate.

For far too many years, our 39th U. S. President has repeatedly denied rumors – without much success – that he plays the guitar, despite his southern roots.

Yet, persistent rumors on blogs, websites, and other global internet sources, continue to misinform the general public that Jimmy Carter is, indeed, a guitarist.

Enough was enough when former President Jimmy Carter finally agreed to appear on the radio talk show “Mad About Music” on October 13, 2012 and went on record telling the radio host, Gilbert Kaplan, that he (Jimmy Carter) did not play the guitar, stating on the airwaves that the only instrument he ever learned to play was the ukulele.

Jimmy Carter also added with amusement: “And my wife, Rosalynn, was the best hula dancer among all the Navy wives!”

Persistent confusion over former

President Jimmy Carter being a guitarist, or not, may have arisen from various photographs of Carter holding the instrument and, in one instance, he even autographed a guitar for a charitable event (other U. S. Presidents have done likewise for the purpose of charity auctions).

Interestingly, urban legend has taken on a life of its own and continues to fuel the myth of Jimmy Carter, the guitar-playing U. S. President, much to his amusement today.

WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT WAS THE BEST VIOLINIST? A. Thomas Jefferson.

B. John Quincy Adams.

C. John Tyler.

D. Abraham Lincoln.

E. Franklin D. Roosevelt.

While it is true that the multi-talented Thomas Jefferson was an accomplished amateur violinist (he also played the cello and clavichord), no American president could hold a candle to U. S. President John Tyler (1841-1845) as a violinist. So, if you selected “C” above, John Tyler, you go to the head of the music class!

Our 10th U. S. President, John Tyler, has gone down in our history books as, by far, the most accomplished violinist with no serious challenges to his throne from any other American president.

John Tyler was a classically-trained violinist who was so highly skilled that he was groomed to become a full professional, touring concert violinist – before politics got in the way.

Though politics intervened, Tyler often entertained guests by playing

his coveted violin in duets with his wife, Julia, an accomplished guitarist.

Tyler’s violin was such a part of his life that his violin was even immortalized as part of the president’s bronze statue in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he is shown holding the instrument which was his lifelong love and passion.

While some biographers claim that Thomas Jefferson was “one of the best violinists of his day, having achieved a serious mastery of the instrument,” many of Jefferson’s own relatives claimed he never accomplished more than a “gentlemanly proficiency.” Since contemporary sources disagree on Thomas Jefferson’s skill as a violinist, we are left with only inferences and clues.

However, reflecting on the complicated and difficult violin passages which he clearly mastered, today’s concert violinists grant Jefferson high praise, considering that many of his compositions were “most challenging.”

Though President John Quincy Adams (“B” on our multiple-choice list), studied the violin, he never mastered playing the instrument. As he stated in his own diary: “I never learned to perform upon the violin because I never could acquire the art of putting the instrument in tune.”

Regarding both Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson on our multiple-choice quiz, neither played the violin, despite persistent and widespread internet misinformation to the contrary.

According to the official Lincoln his-

torians at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City, Indiana, the Great Emancipator never played the violin, as is so often repeated. Likewise, archive scholars at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Staunton, Virginia, state that while President Wilson did sing in the Glee Club at John Hopkins University, he never played the violin.

Regarding the persistent, but erroneous, belief that President Woodrow Wilson played the violin, confusion may have arisen (from unreliable sources) due to the fact that Woodrow Wilson’s own brother, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, who was 11 years younger than the president did, in fact, play the violin.

Both Presidents Harry S. Truman and Richard M. In a file photo dated February 10, 1945, movie star Lauren Bacall is shown lying, seductively, on top of the piano of then-Vice President Harry S. Truman. To this day, the photo is one of the most famous regarding a musical U. S. President and a Hollywood movie star.

The well-publicized photo of Lauren Bacall in repose upon Harry Truman’s piano as he tickled the ivories, however, did not sit well with his wife, Elizabeth “Bess” Truman. As Harry S. Truman biographer, David McCullough, said at the time: “What disturbed many was that Truman appeared to be having such a good time, which he was.

But Bess was furious. She told him he should play the piano in public no more.”

Nevertheless, despite the backlash, our 33rd U. S. President, Harry S. Truman (1845-1953) was a topdrawer pianist. Truman, who never minced his words and earned the nickname “Give ‘em, Hell, Harry!” from the press corps, once said: “My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there’s hardly any difference!”

Give ‘em Hell Harry lived up to his explosive nickname when he woke up one early morning on December 6, 1950 only to read Washington Post music critic, Paul Hume, criticize Harry Truman’s daughter, Margaret Truman, as a failed singer. The 34-year-old music critic, Hume, wrote of Margaret Truman’s Washington recital: “She is extremely attractive on stage, yet Miss Truman cannot sing very well. She is flat a good deal of the time . . .”

A hell-bent Harry S. Truman fired back a most volatile emotional reply in a letter which, in part, openly threatened music critic Paul Hume with bodily harm: “Someday I hope to meet you.

When that happens you’ll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below.”

Truman the pianist, was cut from a different bolt than most youngsters who took piano lessons. Truman never needed to be forced to practice and as a young boy would, willingly, get up at 5 a.m. each morning to lovingly practice for two hours straight!

Among Truman’s favorite composers (whose compositions he often played on the piano) were Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven, and Johann Strauss II.

Though Truman was clearly a more accomplished pianist than Nixon, Nixon was still a highly, classically-trained pianist in his own right, having started playing the piano since age 7. Nixon was even sent 200 miles to study music with his conservatory-trained aunt when he was just 12 years of age, but only for a short 6-month duration under her tutelage.

Though he never, allegedly, learned to formally read music, Nixon mastered complex concerto pieces by ear and proved an extraordinary and talented improviser! He made a celebrated appearance on the old Jack Paar “The Tonight Show,” where he can still be viewed on YouTube playing his own original composition in flawless style.

Of the two, Nixon was -- by far -- the more versatile musician than Truman, playing 5 different instruments including piano, saxophone, clarinet, violin, and accordion.

California’s Craft Economy

When we think about major San Diego economic drivers, we look to the military, tourism, biotech, and in North County, probably agriculture, including wineries. But we usually don’t think about beer.

But, if you selected “E,” Ronald Reagan, you get a pat on the back.

Our 40th U. S. President, Ronald Reagan, played the harmonica – but, managed to keep it a closely-guarded secret, even from prying historians at the time.

During his retirement at his California ranch near Santa Barbara, Reagan enjoyed playing the harmonica, secretly, entertaining close friends at the time. Some prying New York newspapers wrongfully reported that Ronald Reagan was tutored twice weekly on the harmonica and enjoyed playing such popular tunes as “Get Along Little Doggie” and “The Streets of Laredo” on his harmonica. These eastern reports were untrue, being the result of frustrating and fruitless attempts by the New York print media to crack details of Reagan’s harmonica-playing talents.

Reagan continued to nurse his harmonica secret, but, finally acknowledged that he did, indeed, play the harmonica while denying rumors of having a tutor visit him twice a week.

When CBS television asked if they could film one of his harmonica renditions, Reagan flatly answered “no” because he had not yet studied under a tutor. It was when the New York Times sent him a fax inquiring about his carefully-guarded harmonica playing that Reagan finally replied in his own handwriting: “Unfortunately, I’m not taking (harmonica) lessons and probably should.

I’ve always like the harmonica, but can barely play a tune. My repertoire is limited to “Red River Valley,” and I play for my own self-amusement exclusively – usually when I don’t have my hearing aids in. Thank you for thinking of me, anyway.”

President Ronald Reagan’s harmonica playing remained a carefully guarded secret, for a time.

Note: Although the most august American historians fully agree that our 16th U. S. president, Abraham Lincoln, carried and played a harmonica, it is not clear if that particular harmonica was a “Hohner” brand, as has often been reported.

While it is true that the Hohner harmonica was not “officially” massimported into the United States until circa 1868, which was 3 years after Lincoln was assassinated and 3 years after the Civil War had ended, credentialed scholars also point out a scarcely-known historical fact: “Some time before Hohner began manufacturing harmonicas in 1857, he had ‘unofficially’ shipped several sample models to relatives who had emigrated to the United States.”

However, despite this fact, it remains doubtful that Abraham Lincoln owned a Hohner harmonica, but, rather a more common brand.

There is also a persistent myth that Abraham Lincoln wrote a 1855 letter to the German Hohner Harmonica Co. (Hohner Musikinstrumente) in Europe and that Lincoln’s letter

remains on exhibit there. Hohner historians, the official curators of the Hohner Museum, clearly state: “No letter from Abraham Lincoln was ever posted on the walls of the museum.”

The widespread fallacy regarding Lincoln playing a Hohner harmonica is so prevalent on the global internet (by non-scholars) that an explanation regarding this was considered necessary. That Abraham Lincoln did, in fact, play the harmonica (although not a Hohner) is general consensus reached by the world’s most august historians.

WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT WAS THE BEST FLUTE PLAYER? A. George Washington.

B. John Quincy Adams.

C. Thomas Jefferson.

D. Andrew Jackson.

If you selected “A” George Washington, then you’re at the top of your musical game! Though the flute was played by several presidents, such as John Quincy Adams (“B” on our list), not many truly master it to a high degree. As John Quincy Adams wrote in his own diary, “I am extremely fond of music and by dint of great pains have learnt to blow very badly on the flute.”

Regarding George Washington, some segments of the general public still claim he could not play any instrument at all, based on wrongful assumption when taking Washington’s own handwritten words completely out of context.

George Washington, as with Thomas Jefferson, often voiced his sadness on the low-level of appreciation of classical music in early America. When Jefferson bitterly complained that he, figuratively, could not play any instrument in any classical duet or quartet that could overturn the tide of debased musical tastes during his day, some segments of the public mistook his words to, literally, imply that Thomas Jefferson could play any musical instrument at all. The artistically-sensitive Jefferson went so far as to state: “The favorite passion of my soul and fortune (music) has cast my lot in a country where it (music) is in a deplorable (state) of barbarism.”

As with Jefferson, George Washington before him, expressed the same sentiment which has been, erroneously, misinterpreted by the casual reader, to mistakenly conclude that Washington did not play any instrument at all. This wrongful assumption came about when George Washington sent a 1789 handwritten letter to music composer, Francis Hopkinson, in which Washington laments: “I can neither sing nor raise a single note on any instrument to convince the unbelieving, but I have, however, one argument which will prevail with the person of true taste, at least in America, I can tell them it is the production (music compositions) of Mr. Hopkinson.”

The popular misconception that George Washington could not play any musical instrument, or even sing at all, is sadly still prevalent (among non-credentialed scholars) on the

Editor’s Note: This is the second of a six-part Historically Speaking series about the men who created the backbone of American industry, which built our nation. Next: the man who controlled the oil industry for years: John D. Rockefeller King of Oil – America’s Richest Man -- Ever

Controlling the American oil industry made John D. Rockefeller one of the richest men in history – he controlled first kerosene, then motor oil and gasoline. He truly was one of the moguls who built America.

John Davison Rockefeller Sr., born on July 8, 1839, controlled the American oil industry for all of his adult life. He became a business magnate, industrialist, and philanthropist.

He is widely considered the wealthiest American of all time, and the richest person in modern history.

In 1867, at age 20, with a company owned by Rockefeller, his brother, and two partners, they formed an oil company, but instead of drilling for oil, they concentrated on oil refining.

As kerosene and gasoline grew in importance, Rockefeller's wealth soared and he became the richest person in the country, controlling 90 percent of all oil in the United States. Oil was used throughout the country as a source for fueling lamps until the introduction of electricity and as a fuel and lubricant after the invention of the automobile. Furthermore, Rockefeller gained enormous influence over the railroad industry, which transported his oil around the country. Standard Oil was the first great business trust in the United States.

But, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1911 that Standard Oil must be dismantled for violation of federal antitrust laws. It was broken up into 34 separate entities that included compa-

nies that would become ExxonMobil, Chevron and others. Some of them still have the highest level of revenue in the world. Individual pieces of the company were worth more than the whole, and, as shares of these doubled and tripled in value in their early years, Rockefeller became the country's first billionaire with a fortune worth nearly 2 percent of the national economy. In 1913, his peak net worth was estimated at $336 billions, inflation-adjusted for 2007 dollars).

Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement at his estate in Westchester County, New York.

His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy. His foundations pioneered the development of medical research and were instrumental in the near-eradication of hookworm and yellow fever in the United States.

Rockefeller was a devout Northern Baptist and supported many churchbased institutions. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life. A faithful congregant of the Erie Street Baptist Mission Church, he taught Sunday school, and served as a trustee, clerk and occasional janitor.

Religion was a guiding force throughout his life and Rockefeller believed it to be the source of his success. Rockefeller also was considered a supporter of capitalism based on a perspective of social Darwinism and was quoted often as saying: "The growth of a large business is merely a survival of the fittest.”

Rockefeller often offered his shares as payment for a business, and quite a few of whom became very wealthy as managers as well as owners in Standard Oil. They include politicians and writers, some of whom served Rockefeller's interests, and some of whom built their careers by fighting Rockefeller and the "robber barons".

By the time of his death in 1937, Rockefeller's remaining fortune, largely tied up in permanent family trusts, was estimated at $1.4 billion, while the total national GDP was $92 billion. According to some methods of wealth calculation, Rockefeller's net worth over the last decades of his life would easily place him as the wealthiest known person in recent history. As a percentage of the United States' GDP, no other American fortune — including those of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett, or Sam Walton — would even come close.

At age 86, Rockefeller penned the following words to sum up his life: I was early taught to work as well as play, My life has been one long, happy holiday; Full of work and full of play— I dropped the worry on the way— And God was good to me every day.

In the Mt. Vernon collection is a flute that is said to have belonged to Washington, himself. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: In 1987, President Ronald Reagan made a public proclamation that the month of March should be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to “increase public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities. Over the ensuing 31 years much has changed. The theme for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2018 is, “See Me for Me!” to Home of Guiding Hands (HGH), this is its everyday mission.

Since its inception in 1961, HGH has provided benchmark programming and housing for men, women, and children with developmental disabilities. As the organization celebrates its mission and the people it serves, it has also become engaged in the issue of how the remarkable individuals who become caretakers for the developmentally disabled are classified under California State Law. Currently, the HGH caretaker staff are classified as entry level workers by the state. The minimum wage in San Diego is $11.50 an hour. The State minimum is $11.00. The State has taken the position that it will only reimburse employees at the rate of $11.00, despite local wage ordinances, and that no rate adjustments are needed.

President & CEO of HGH, Mark Klaus, noted that the low reimbursement of caregivers has a dramatic impact on how agencies like HGH struggle to make ends meet.

“Ninety percent of providers are experiencing increased labor costs; 46 percent of providers have closed, or downsized programs and 60 percent are considering closing or downsizing programs. The next step is to present the powerful evidence to the State, and work together to generate legislative support that ensures organizations continue to provide optimum service to these individuals.

The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, were honored to have as their speaker, Dr. Seth Mallios, Professor of Anthropology at San Diego State University. Dr. Mallios presented a power point presentation about a dig on Palomar Mountain that he and his students have done over the years. The subject of the dig is Nate Harrison, the first AfricanAmerican homesteader in the county.

Harrison was born into slavery some time in the 1830s. He traveled West with his owner, Mr. Harrison, and after obtaining his freedom he traveled up and down the state until finally settling at the base of the mountain.

He eventually moved higher up on the mountain, building his 11 ft X 11 ft cabin at the juncture of the wagon road, currently named the Nate Harrison Grade, and the old Indian trail. Harrison was quite jovial, greeting everyone with a smile and some cool spring water. Dr. Mallios is currently writing a book about the legendary, Nate Harrison, and hopes to educate the public about this African-American, and his place in San Diego County. Dr. Mallios was presented a certificate from chapter regent, Alida Woodward.

Participatory Budgeting

The Escondido City Council has a yearly budgeting process to plan how to spend money we collect from you in the form of sales taxes, property taxes, fines and fees. Few members of the public ever participate in the budgeting process even though it is your money we are spending.

Escondido used to have a budget subcommittee of two councilmembers who would comb

through the budget document line by line with department staff. That committee was eliminated with the idea that all councilmembers should be heavily involved in preparing the budget. Instead, the process was shifted to reduce or avoid public input by eliminating opportunities to discuss budget decisions in advance or to ask for clarification, hence the lack of community interest or input.

Our City budget should reflect investment in the needs and priori-

ties of our residents. The only way to do this is to ask community members for input. There is a model of participatory budgeting that involves the public in a facilitated effort to balance a budget with existing revenue conditions and constraints. I would greatly welcome an effort by the City of Escondido to engage residents in participatory budgeting as a way to expand civic engagement and invest our community tax dollars as recommended by community taxpayers.

They came from all over Israel at this time of year. Faithful Jews eager to celebrate Passover in Jerusalem. There just wasn’t any other place to remember how God had rescued His people from slavery in Egypt. Even today, with Jews scattered over the world, the hope is that next year Passover will be celebrated in Jerusalem.

Among the travelers is Jesus of Nazareth and a group of followers.

Nearing Jerusalem one of the disciples arrives with a young donkey colt. No doubt there were those in the crowd who wondered if that was the rabbi from Nazareth, some whispering among the crowd.

For those who knew their prophets, the young donkey clinched it. As they walked along, they realized it WAS Jesus. Before long, a parade

As the week played out, the cheering turned to jeering, mocking, betrayal, denial and desertion. By the time Jesus made His way to the cross and death by crucifixion, nearly all His followers had fled.

But on that Sunday, for a few moments, Jesus was King. His approval rating was through the roof.

The road from Palm Sunday to Easter is short the way we travel it today. More like a freeway than the narrow, curvy, up and down 2 lane road it was for Jesus. We push through the journey because we want to get to Easter, the empty tomb, the Resurrection, the promise of new life.

Pause for a moment at the beginning of this Holy Week. Cheer as the parade passes by and worship Jesus as your King. Then, follow along, through the week so that you can shout with the others, “He is risen, He is risen indeed. “

4) MORE NUDITY A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

5) POLICE # 1

While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop? Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her.

'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

6) POLICE # 2

It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station.

As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked.

'It sure is,' I replied.

Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'

7) ELDERLY

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

8) DRESS-UP

A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.'

'And why not, darling?'

'You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

9) DEATH

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

Microsoft’s plans for you.

We’ll continue the discussion we started last week on why Microsoft abuses its loyal users but first I want to answer a question frequently asked by our friends and customers. “When are you guys going to hang it up and retire?” The best answer is that if there ever comes a time when we don’t enjoy what we do every day or start to feel like what we do for our customers is not important or no longer needed, we’d probably try to find something else to do. It just doesn’t seem like that is going to happen very soon.

Joe is a friend, a customer and accomplished at both golf and duplicate bridge, his lovely wife and golf partner Dr Denise is a prominent Psychotherapist working on a trial protocol to cure PTSD symptoms with a success rate of over 90% for the hundreds of men and women who have passed through the program in the past three years. Joe and Denise are great folks to be around but Joe’s friend was something special. His name is Fred Bennett and he is a 93 year old and a clear eyed well spoken gentleman. Fred was moving to a veteran’s home in the Central Valley. He won’t have a lot of space and had decided to purchase a notebook PC to keep in touch with the world. We got Fred fixed up with exactly what he needed in short order and saved him a lot of money doing it. We asked Fred what he did in WWII. Fred told us he was in the Army Air Corp and flew B17 bombers on raids over Italy and Romania including the infamous oil fields at Ploesti. Fred sadly remembered the many friends he lost in the Ploesti raids. Fred told us how happy they always were to see the 332 Fighter Group (the Tuskegee Airmen) as escorts on their bomb runs. It was a great pleasure to be able to meet and talk to this wonderful gentleman and living part of history. We don’t get to meet a Fred Bennett every day but it is the kind of thing that keeps us eager to unlock the door at 9:00 each morning.

Now back to Microsoft and you.

Last week we talked about how Microsoft needs to figure out a way to survive in the post PC age.

Businesses will continue to use to use Windows based PCs for quite some time because they have a heavily investment in hardware, LANs (networks) and Windows based applications. Home and small business users have no such constraints. Microsoft knows that increasingly these users are finding that they really don’t need anything from Microsoft. All the applications they need are available either free on the Internet or downloadable from other sources.

Within three years many of their “PCs” will be a smart phones in a cradle connected to a mouse, keyboard and large monitor. All the applications will by Internet

Sound unbelievable? It will begin to happen this year.

Microsoft has a lot of products and applications under development and soon Microsoft will introduce its “Cortana” based “digital assistant to rival “Alexa” and “Hey Google.” Will all their efforts be able to save the slow moving, bureaucratic monster that Microsoft has become? Maybe, but so far it’s been painful to watch.
