Famous people and popular celebrities surround us in our daily lives; they are well-recognized on television, movies, magazines, documentaries, and even our history books. Many of us adore them; are fascinated by them, and some have even inspired us to live better, fuller lives. Some are infamous outlaws or evil-doers – nonetheless, they are often required reading in our schools and universities.

Yet, there is much about these celebrities, VIPs, political figures, and other famous individuals – past to present – about which we actually know very little.

From Abraham Lincoln to Charles Lindbergh; from Adolf Hitler to Lady Gaga, and from the Beatles to Albert Einstein, there exists a vast barren wilderness of unknowns. Many secrets and surprising facts comprise the lives of our favorite movie stars, rock stars, and the most famous historical figures in history.

And this is where the fun begins.

Herewith, is a fun multiple-choice quiz to share with friends and family members. A quiz to test our knowledge about the most famous – and, sometimes, infamous – individuals who live or have lived, on this third planet from the Sun. And that, folks, is no illusion!

Born Seth Kotkin in Metuschen, New Jersey, the son of Jewish immigrant parents originally from the USSR (now, present-day Ukraine), David Copperfield is ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 20th highest-earning celebrity in the world, and there is no end in sight to his burgeoning income: last year, 2016, was his highest-earning year so far. Seems he gets wealthier with time.

In 2006, Copperfield purchased eleven gorgeous Bahamian islands which he calls “Musha Cay and the Islands of Copperfield Bay” a virtual string of pearls many have called “paradise on Earth,” and of which only select individuals have made the Dream List as visitors, such as: Oprah Winfrey and Google co-founder, Sergev Brin, who actually wanted to be married there – and was!

But all has not been heavenly for the winner of 21-Emmy Awards and holder of 11 Guinness Book World Records.

On the contrary, there has been trouble in paradise; there have been terrifying moments of near-death in his star-studded life.

On March 11, 1984, David Copperfield nearly passed away. While rehearsing

one of his illusions, something horrible went wrong, and there were no cameras to witness it. Practicing his escape, Copperfield was shackled and handcuffed inside a tank of water and, somehow, he became tangled in his own chains and started panicking and swallowing water! Full panic finally set-in as Copperfield began banging on the sides of the water tank! After a minute and 20 seconds, he was finally pulled out but was hyperventilating and then he went into shock. Rushed to a Burbank, California hospital, doctors found that his strenuous banging on the inside of the tank caused him to pull tendons in both his arms and legs.

For a solid week, the great illusionist was confined to a wheelchair, and then he graduated to just using a cane to learn to walk all over again.

To this very day, this near-fatal episode remains, largely, a great unknown secret in the life of one of history’s greatest – and richest – entertainers. One thing

that is surely not a secret – David Copperfield’s immense wealth.

Copperfield once gave his former girlfriend, German supermodel, Claudia Schiffer, an $11-million yacht, just because. The legendary 92-foot yacht, called the Honey Fritz, once served as the yacht to five U. S. presidents from Harry Truman to Richard Nixon. The “expensive toy” was given to Claudia Schiffer, only two months into their romance. This opulent gift led to the running joke that David Copperfield is so rich that he had to get another yacht for himself because the first one got wet!

Well, I can imagine you biting your lip and narrowing your eyes in deep thought. But, if you somehow selected “A” George Lucas, well, you deserve a pat on the back.

First off, everyone on the above list has mega-bucks: Steven Spielberg has a net worth of $3.7-billion (that’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b’), and Oprah Winfrey has a listed worth of $2.8-billion, and hoop immortal, Michael Jordan, can fill a Brinks truck with his $1.2-billion, but, the richest celeb listed above is, hands-down, George Lucas, who has amassed a net worth of $3.7-billion green backs!

Keep in mind, if you placed $1-million in a single stack, you would need one thousand of those stacks to equal just $1-billion.

By the way, did you know that George Lucas originally wanted to be a race car driver? Well, it’s true! However, a nearfatal accident in his ‘beefed-up’ Italianmade Fiat car, during his high school years, ended that first dream to race cars as a profession.

Lucky for us, as Lucas went on to produce such movie classics as “American Graffiti” (1973) and the enormously popular ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ movies.

May 14, 1944 in Modesto, California. It was there, in the Modesto suburbs where his early passion for cars and street racing began. That early fascination with cars served as his inspiration for the low-budget film, “American Graffiti,” which he made for only $780,000 in 1973. The film made history by grossing over $100-million in America, alone, before going worldwide.

The young, un-established film-maker shocked the movie industry by earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Director for George Lucas, then still in his 20s. Today I swung my front door wide open and placed my Stevens 320 shotgun right in the doorway. I gave it 6 shells, and noticing that it had no legs, even placed it in my wheelchair to help it get around. I then left it alone and went about my business.

While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the neighbor boy across the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the stop sign right in front of our house.

After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still sitting there in the wheelchair, right where I had left it. It hadn't rolled itself outside. It certainly hadn't killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so. In fact, it hadn't even loaded itself.

Well you can imagine my surprise, with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they kill people. Either the media is wrong, and it's the misuse of guns by PEOPLE that kills people, or I'm in possession of the laziest gun in the world.

I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

Alright, well I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making people fat.

Judging from the worldwide web, the chatter amongst internet-users has this question high on the minds of people everywhere. Among the layperson (noncredentialed historians), there is much bantering on various blogs, with no absolute agreement and confusion everywhere.

Let’s talk to the world’s most expert historians regarding this specific query.

William Shirer “has been read by many and cited in scholarly works for more than 50 years.” Mr. Shirer became known for his broadcasts from Berlin, Germany from the rise of the Nazi dictatorship through the first year of World War II (1940).

According to the esteemed Shirer, Adolf Hitler did not speak English (at least not well enough to follow any conversation).

William Shirer’s account of the 1938 Sudeten crisis and the discussions that took place indicate that Hitler did not speak any English and, in fact, according to Francois-Poncet (French diplomat who was there), Hitler became increasingly agitated and angry because he could not understand any of the English and French as Mussolini could.

That Hitler was completely lost in the English language is strongly corroborated by other undisputed historical accounts, all well-documented.

In a BBC interview, Deborah Cavendish, the dowager Duchess of Devonshire, described having tea with Hitler along with her mother and her sister, Unity Mitford. Deborah Cavendish recalled that her sister, Unity, did all the talking since she was the only person there who spoke German and, thus, she served as interpreter.

Nevertheless, it is not surprising that a plethora of “exotic theories” have emerged that Der Fuhrer spoke English and even French from his military service when he was stationed in France and Belgium during the First World War. This multilingual Hitler is a complete fabrication, according to the foremost experts, who are in total agreement.

One reason for the confusion is that opposing theories have been fueled by fictionalized stories dramatized on London’s BBC television network.

Deadline for Kids Kaleidoscope Art Show – The deadline for the Kids Kaleidoscope Art Show is approaching.

Though it must be conceded that Hitler took French in school as a requirement, he had no desire to learn the language at all and, as a consequence, he received a complete “failing” grade, according to his actual school records. In contrast, British diplomat and Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Nazi Germany, Sir Nevile Meyrick Henderson (served 1937–1939), was fluent in German and required no interpreter. Hitler enjoyed speaking to British Ambassador, Henderson, directly, in fluent German. According to a conversation in August of 1939, prior to the outbreak of World War II, Hitler confided to Ambassador Nevile Henderson, “I am an artist and not a politician. Once the Polish question is settled, I want to end my life as an artist.” (Published in the British War Blue Book, 1939.)

To reiterate, contrary to popular belief and persistent urban legend, Hitler did not speak French, as some persist in saying, today. He spoke only German and never wished to learn any other foreign language. Mussolini, on the other hand, had a tutor to teach him English so that he could follow the British press. II Duce (The Leader) eventually became a fluent English-speaker. Mussolini can also be heard/seen online, via archival film footage, speaking in English.

Mussolini was much more enthusiastic about becoming multi-lingual than Adolf Hitler.

Now, let’s pop in on our 16th U. S. President, Abraham Lincoln, and see what’s new!

It is a very little-known fact that the famous ‘Rail Splitter’ was a tremendously skilled wrestler of his day! In 1831, when Lincoln moved to New Salem, Illinois, he was soon confronted by a well-known bully by the name of Jack Armstrong.

It was there that Armstrong challenged Lincoln to a wrestling match. Lincoln was a clerk at the time at a store known as Denton Offutt. To Armstrong’s misfortune, Lincoln accepted the wrestling challenge which quickly grabbed the town’s attention in the form of frenzied betting by the townspeople.

Lincoln won the match along with his challenger’s respect from that day onward. Then, the secret got out. The town’s residents quickly learned of Abe’s supreme wrestling skills. As a young wrestler, Abraham Lincoln would only be defeated once out of approximately 300 matches! Now, that’s noteworthy! Bottom line: Dadblastit, you don’t mess with our 16th president!

On Tuesday, March 7th, at 9:09 P.M. Catherine Kennedy was murdered while driving her car through the middle of a violent gang confrontation.

The Escondido Police Department has been working tirelessly to identify and locate the persons responsible for this tragic death.

On Wednesday, March 15th, the Escondido Police Department made two arrests in this gang-related crime, a 24year-old male adult believed to be the shooter, and a 16-year-old male juvenile.

For clarification purposes, it is believed there was only one shooter in this incident, and that it was not a cross-fire situation.

Chief Craig Carter met with Cathy Kennedy’s immediate family and they wished to express their deep appreciation of the Escondido Police Department for their continued efforts in investigating Cathy’s death and arresting those responsible. “We would like to commend the Escondido Police Department on these arrests and ask that you respect our privacy as we continue through the grieving process in light of this new information,” said Kevin Kennedy.

On March 18 at 6:07 p.m., the City of

Carlsbad Police Department was called to the Sherman Williams Paint store located at 7040 Avenida Encinas #100 in the City of Carlsbad regarding a robbery.

The caller, a 21 year old female employee, reported that a Hispanic or White male wearing a black sweatshirt and a ski mask knocked on the rear door of the business at closing time. When the employee answered the door, the subject struck the employee on the head with an unknown object. The subject then forced the victim into the store where he demanded the employee to give him the U.S. currency from the cash registers.

The employee gave the U.S. currency to the suspect who fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. The loss was approximately 600.00 dollars.

No weapons were seen by the victim at the time of the incident.

The victim sustained no visible injuries from the incident.

Officers searched the area with the assistance of the San Diego Police Department’s Air support Unit, but were unable to locate the suspect.

A search for the suspect and an investigation into the robbery is ongoing.

Suspicious Circumstances at Kit Carson Park

On Saturday, March 18th at about 9:00 A.M. the Escondido Police were notified of a possible attempted child abduction near the baseball fields at Kit Carson Park. According to the 9-year-old male victim, an adult male asked him if he wanted to get into the bed of his pickup. When the victim said no, the male adult then offered him cake. The victim again refused and ran away. The suspect did not follow the victim or make any

Additionally, the Escondido Police Department hosts a kid’s Safety Academy, taught by retired Lieutenant Allen Owens, 3-4 times per year. There is a class starting this Saturday and another scheduled for April. Call the Escondido Recreation Department to sign up.

City Manager Graham Mitchell Bids Farewell to Escondido City Council

By all accounts Graham Mitchell has done an outstanding job as City Manager for the City of Escondido in his 18 month tenure with the city. He succeeded former City Manager Clay Phillips and managed to gain the trust and support of his departmental staff as well as that of the City Council.

Jeff Epp, city attorney and interim city manager spoke highly of Mitchell as he and the city council saluted him on his departure.

Class Offered for Gun Owners

Mayor Sam Abed commented, “I wanted to take this moment to thank you for your trust in our community and for the hard work you have put in this one year and a half to make a difference.” Abed praised Mitchell’s “dedicated service to Escondido.”

The class is offered Sunday, April 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Escondido Fish and Game Association shooting range east of Lake Wohlford.

Participants learn the basics of handguns, home firearm safety and responsibility of firearm ownership. Handguns and ammunition are provided for the class but participants are encouraged to bring their own handgun if they already own one.

create an artificial pump or valve for a human heart! And he did!

Lindbergh’s motivation to help create an artificial human heart was based on his sister-in-law Elisabeth’s battle with heart disease. Lindbergh quickly teamed up with Nobel Prize-winning French surgeon, Alexis Carrel, and spent the early 1930s working together on a mechanical way to keep human organs alive outside the human body.

By 1935, Lindbergh and Dr. Carrel created a “perfusion pump” made out of Pyrex glass that moved air and life-giving fluids through an “excised” (removed) organ to keep that organ working outside the body – and, yet, still protect the organ from any infection. This pump was hailed as “a medical breakthrough” and helped pave the way for the eventual development of the first true artificial organs. Both Lindbergh and Nobel Laureate, French surgeon, Alexis Carrel, chronicled their discovery in a collaborated book in 1938 called, “The Culture of Organs.”

According to The New York Times of 1935: “Unknown to the public, Lindbergh had been working at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research for years as an associate of Dr. Alexis Carrel, who had successfully performed live organ transplants in animals and was known for having sustained “life” for many years in a small piece of tissue from the heart of an embryo chick.”

It was a most spectacular sight.

Next he headed back and made eight circles over the city stadium (Balboa Stadium), buzzing over the center of the field at only 100 feet, while dipping his wings in returning his salute to San Diego residents, and recalling his own words: “Neither Paris nor London equaled San Diego.”

With the international press corps popping flash photos and recording his every word, and the famed Will Rogers sitting at his side, the Lone Eagle rose and pronounced these words regarding San Diego: “It was a most intense reception, unequalled in any city which has seen fit to honor me. Nothing could surpass its genuine enthusiasm, its heartfelt sentiment. Neither Paris nor London equaled San Diego.”

That was a huge statement from Lindbergh. He had made a tour of eighty-two cities across America, covered 22,350 miles, and delivered 147 speeches and was seen by an estimated thirty million people. But, even as a non-pilot, Lucky Lindy loved San Diego.

He especially loved the dinner honoring him at the Hotel Del Coronado. The Del stole his heart.

When his plane approached our beautiful city at a low altitude from Los Angeles on September 21, 1927, he knew many San Diegans would greet him. Always grateful to San Diego’s Ryan Airlines, he twice circled the Ryan plant near the waterfront while flying on his side.

One only hopes that if the suspects are proven guilty in a court of law that the judge throws the book at them and lets them learn a very hard lesson.

We also hope that the Escondido Police Department will continute to press members of local gangs to behave themselves or face the consequences. We could wish the gang members to move but moving our problem residents to another community doesn’t sole the problem. We need to put an end to gang violence and we need to do it quickly.

My Assembly Bill, AB 1031, will help California’s native wildlife receive care and rehabilitation provided by nonprofit organizations throughout the state. My bill allows taxpayers filing their tax returns to voluntarily `check off ’ a specified amount to support the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Fund.

On a daily basis, California’s animal rehabilitation organizations rescue injured, sick or orphaned wildlife and provide them with medical treatment, care, protection and nourishment with the ultimate aim of reintroducing them back into the wild. Like all nonprofits, animal rehabilitation organizations need funding to continue to serve our state.

Currently, California law allows taxpayers to donate to a number of charitable funds when filing their tax returns.

There is no excuse for gangs to be allowed to flourish and grow in any community. They simply need to be eradicated.

I'm always amazed at how many people say they won't go to Wal-Mart because they pay minimum wage, yet have NO PROBLEM going to a casino that abuses human rights, practices APARTHEID/segregation and abuses their own relations.

Russ was hours away from being euthanized (killed) because he had a fatty tumor (benign) that kept him from being adopted.

In 1776, John assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence and was its primary advocate in the Congress.

Later, as a diplomat in Paris, he helped negotiate the peace treaty with Great Britain ending the American Revolution. He was responsible for obtaining vital governmental loans from Amsterdam bankers. The ultimate irony: John Adams was the first U.S. ambassador to Great Britain, whereas years earlier, he was on the British list to be hanged.

A political theorist and historian, Adams largely wrote the Massachusetts Constitution in 1780, which together with his earlier “Thoughts on Government,” influenced American political thought. One of Adams greatest roles was his judge of character: In 1775, he nominated George Washington to be commander-inchief, and 25 years later nominated John Marshall to be Chief Justice of the United States.

Adams' revolutionary credentials secured him two terms as George Washington's vice president and his own election in 1796 as the second president. During his one term as president, he encountered ferocious attacks by the Jeffersonian Republicans, as well as the dominant faction in his own Federalist Party led by his bitter enemy Alexander Hamilton.

Adams was the first U.S. president to reside in the executive mansion that eventually became known as the White House.

Unlike his first cousin, Samuel Adams, who was a radical advocate for breaking away from Great Britain, John Adams was slow to embrace the idea of independence.

In the early days of the Revolution, John was uneasy about the radical views and actions of his cousin.

John was a thinker and promoter of calm; Sam was a man of action who believed in meeting force with force.

Well-educated, John Adams was a political theorist who promoted republicanism, as well as a strong central government. He wrote prolifically about his often-seminal ideas, both in published works and in letters to his wife and key advise Abigail.

As a result of the Boston Massacre and anti-British feelings in Boston at a boiling point, he provided a principled, controversial, and successful legal defense of the six accused British soldiers who fired shots that killed several Bostonians.

He decided to represent the soldiers because he believed in the right to counsel and the "protection of innocence".

Adams came to prominence in the early stages of the American Revolution. A lawyer and public figure in Boston, as a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, he played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence. Adams was opposed to slavery, and never owned a slave.

During Congressional debates, he often was at odds with many of the delegates from the South at times with a very loud voice.

He signed the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts, and built up the army and navy especially in the face of an undeclared naval war (called the "Quasi-War") with France, (1798-1800). The major accomplishment of his presidency was his peaceful resolution of the conflict in the face of Hamilton's opposition.

In 1800, Adams was defeated for reelection by Thomas Jefferson and retired to Massachusetts. He later resumed his friendship with Jefferson through years of exchanging letters. He and his wife had an accomplished family line of politicians, diplomats, and historians now referred to as the “Adams political family.”Their son,John Quincy Adams, was the sixth President of the United States.

Though somewhat forgotten after he left the presidency, John Adams’ achievements have received greater recognition in modern times. His contributions to the forming of our government were not initially as celebrated as those of other Founding Fathers. Ironically, Adams and Jefferson died within hours of one another on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing.

Why Windows 10 is shrinking

First a little background: Windows OS (operating systems) are used on 90% of the World’s PCs (notebooks and desktops). Google’s Android OS is used on over 80% of the World’s mobile devices (tablets and smart phones). Apple’s iOS has a 6% presence in PCs and 12% in mobile devices. Mobile devices make up 60% of Internet traffic. The remaining 40% represents PCs accessing the Internet.

In order to determine the market share and trends for each PC OS, industry analysts continuously survey that 40% of traffic resulting from PCs accessing the Internet.

The OS used by each PC is record-

Tracking these monthly surveys yield the broad trends in the life of each OS. The “good ones” seem to last forever and the “bad ones” fade quickly. Microsoft replaced Win XP (good one) with Win Vista (bad one) ten years ago. While 8.5% of PCs still run XP, less than 1% still run Vista. Five years ago Win 8/8.1 (bad one) replaced Win 7 (good one). Today Win 7 runs nearly half the World’s PCs while Win 8/8.1 runs fewer than 10%.

This brings us to Win10. Win10 replaced Win 8/8.1 nearly two years ago but since Win7 was still the dominant OS at that time, Win10 was really attempting to replace Win7. Even though Microsoft, for the first time ever, offered free Win10 upgrades to Win7 and 8.1 users, Win7 PCs still outnumber Win10 PCs today by nearly two to one. Since December 2016 Win10’s market share has not only stopped growing, it has begun to shrink. At the same time Win7’s market share has inched up. How can this be when retail stores only sell Win10

PCs and aren’t allowed to sell Win7 PCs? Here’s why.

The negative publicity surrounding Win10 caused a steep decline in the “retail” sales of new Win10 PCs. “Enterprise,” (business) sales of new PCs were not affected by Win10’s problems because “enterprises” don’t buy Win10. They use “downgrade rights” to order their new PCs with Win7 Pro. With “enterprise” sales remaining strong and “retail” sales in the tank, eight year old Win7 is actually outselling Win10. These corporations replace three to five year old Win7 Pro PCs with new Win7 Pro PCs. That releases millions of old Win7 Pro PCs into the market as corporate “refurbs.”

In the past six months, I have visited three DMV’s - Oceanside, San Marcos (formerly in Escondido) and Chula Vista.

The Department of Motor Vehicles is a state operation. Each location offered a different and eye opening experience.

Oceanside was our first stop.The building was old and a little crusty but the service was professional and reasonably paced.

Avoid the San Marcos DMV. The new building is spacious and modern but the employees were slow and unpleasant. Even with an appointment, it took us four hours from start to finish.

Each experience began with a visit to the DMV website, which is clunky but worked enough to let me scheduled a time for service.

Pastor Tom Fry (Retired) Church of the Nazarene “Are you OK?”

I was a chaplain and the people in my care had been through an emotional time at the loss of a co-worker. It was a lead into “How are you feeling?” to a leader among people who seldom share their deepest feelings.

“No, I’m not,” was the surprising answer. Then he continued, “But, I will be.” Those few words revealed some of the most profound faith I had ever seen.

The question and the answer describe our community as we still reel from the death of Catherine Kennedy.

Even with the announcement last week, as I was writing this, of two arrests, we are still grieving over this tragedy.

Police Chief Craig Carter called it “senseless.” Union Tribune columnist Logan Jenkins lamented how an inch

But, we will be. It will take some time.

Vigils help. So does a celebration of life. Even the arrests provide a sense of peace in the process.

Catherine Kennedy was strong in her faith. So are her family and friends. And many others in our community who came under her teaching and her influence.

Ultimately, it is faith that will hold us together, nurture us and protect us, keep us safe until we are OK once again. Faith, though, is tested in times like these. Stretched and strained, sometimes to the breaking point.

We struggle to find answers, reasons, to understand. Nothing seems to make sense.

We are not OK.

“Blessed are they that mourn,” Jesus said.

Those who are not OK. “For they shall be comforted,” he went on.

But, one day, they will be.

And, in God’s time, so will we.

Free Tax Help for Seniors

Tax season is here and volunteers are ready to assist you. The City is partnering with AARP in offering free tax help at the McClellan Senior Center. The Center is located at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive.

Appointments may be made by calling the Senior Center Tax line at 760.643.5290. The free service runs through mid-April.

If you have a few hours to spare once a month or each week, think about becoming a volunteer driver at the Senior Center. Using volunteer drivers, the “Out and About” transportation program provides

eligible homebound residents door-todoor transportation for grocery shopping, medical appointments, and other errands.

The program helps older adults stay independent by providing them transportation. Volunteers are needed to provide a friendly smile and to drive these seniors to their destinations.

Drivers are reimbursed for mileage and receive supplemental insurance.

I don't usually pass on sad news like this, but sometimes we need to pause and remember what life is all about.

There was a great loss recently.

Larry LaPrise, who wrote the song "Hokey Pokey," died this past week at age 83.

It was extremely difficult for the family to keep him in the casket. They'd put his left leg in and... well, you know the rest...

There was a knock on the door this past Saturday morning. I opened it to find a young, well-dressed man standing there who said: "Hello sir, I'm a Jehovah's Witness."

So I said "Come in and sit down."

I offered him a fresh cup of coffee and asked, "What do you want to talk about?"

He said, "Beats the heck out of me!

Nobody ever let me in before."

A Remembrance from her husband, Anthony (Tony) Surrounded by family, my most beloved wife of 59 years, Becky, passed away peacefully at home with no pain on March 8, 2017. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have known Becky since she was 15. Becky is the mother of our two wonderful sons: Lorenzo ~ a Fire Chief, and Andrew ~ a Paralegal. Becky is grandmother to Anthony and the twins, Marc and Andrew.

Becky was given excellent care

by Elizabeth Hospice and The Visiting Angels Care Givers and by one Care Giver in particular, Sobeyda (Sammy).

When Becky and I married on October 18, 1957, she lost her nursing scholarship because in those days a girl could not be married and go to nursing school. (I was a US ARMY medical laboratory technician.).

When we married, Becky told me she wanted to do two things: keep house for me and travel. Becky did both in spades - traveling in 1958 from Cleveland to Los Angeles to Wake Island to Japan for 2 1/2 days, in 1958 propeller planes. I was stationed at the 406 Medical General Laboratory at Camp Zama, Japan, then Santa Monica,

When I was discharged from the Army in 1960, after two years in Japan, I asked Becky "what do you want to eat?" She said "a hamburger."

Becky was very frugal and would say "all I want is enough money to buy sheets on sale at J.C.Penneys."

Becky LOVED Mexican food even though she is English, Irish, Scotish, French and Jewish (Lyle called her "My beautiful Irish, Jewish Princess.") BUT Becky cooked the best Italian food in the whole wide world!

She was extremely intelligent. She was my right hand gal in our law office for 37 years until she retired in 2004. In fact, she put on two programs for the North County Bar Association, which the California State Bar acknowledged as qualifying for two hours of MCLE credit - and Becky was not an attorney.

When we had a 12 attorney law firm, Becky did an excellent job cracking the whip over the 12 attorneys and four legal secretaries. "Everything according to the Law!!!!" Lately, I could not have had more loyal support from my Staff at my office: Marlene Gracia and Natalie Pacitti- outstanding!

When I reregistered with the State Bar as Anthony Abbott, Attorney at Law (but still keeping my legal nameAnthony Gigliotti), Becky and I would go to State Bar Seminars, etc., at different hotels. I got a kick out of registering as Anthony Abbott and Rebecca M. Gigliotti.

In over 60 years of knowing and loving this wonderful lady, we have more than 10,000 stories. I tell people that I do not know how to date because the first girl I dated, I married.

Outstanding Citizen Students Recognized - Sophia Banner and Maricruz Gutierrez proudly received Youth Citizenship Awards, certificates and books on March 9th from Center of the Valley Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at the Valley Center Library.

Both girls were highly recommended by their teachers as exemplary students and citizens. Eligibility for the awards are based on honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. Maricruz of Pauma School was recommended by her 8th grade teacher, Irene Cullen, who said she excels in all her academic classes, and is also musically and artistically talented. She said, “Maricruz is proud to be an American…and is thankful that America is a place where dreams can come true and is the land of opportunity”.

She proudly raises and lowers the school flag daily. Sophia Banner of Valley Center Middle School is the ASB (student government) historian and is involved in many sports and activities.

Her Physical Education teacher, Kristin Stehly, said “Sophia is one of the kindest and most compassionate students I’ve ever had. She is a great example to other students at all times and her enthusiasm and positive attitude are not only seen by staff and students daily on campus, but are also contagious to those around her”. Both young ladies make Valley Center proud and the Center of the Valley DAR is happy to recognize them.
