Amazing stories of human beings driven by love and courage and eventual triumph over seeminglyimpossible odds abound everywhere. There is no shortage of such famous documented cases. But what about those miraculous moments of everyday people which are kept secret and, therefore, remain hidden and mostly The Paper - 760.747.7119

uncelebrated down through the years?

Let’s take a rare look at some of the most inspiring true slices of life and how love, courage, and the human spirit led to great moments of miraculous triumph. Extraordinary triumphs which remain vastly unknown and unheralded, to this very day. On the evening of November 16,

1959, the world premiere of the Broadway musical, The Sound of Music, made its debut. It is well known that The Sound of Music became one of the most beloved and popular musicals to ever hit the Great White Way, amassing 1,443 total performances and capturing the hearts of theater-goers and critics, alike. What is not well known, are the hidden secrets which took place backstage, behind the footlights, and

unknown to the world-at-large. Unlike the musical production itself, the mysterious unraveling of events hidden behind the curtain were the stuff of real human drama and not the world of make-believe or re-enactment found in exaggerated showbiz scripts.

What actually occurred backstage, behind the heavily-draped curtains and multi-colored floodlights, stunned many theatrical

‘insiders’ – even seasoned veterans of the stage and screen -- who witnessed it, first-hand.

It involved The Sound of Music’s principal star, famed actress, Mary Martin (1913-1990), who portrayed the real-life story of Maria von Trapp, matriarch of the famous Trapp Family Singers. Martin personified the Sound of Music story to such perfection that her nightly performances dazzled her audience of adoring fans and mesmerized world critics who succumbed to her feat in adoration and glorious reviews.

Long, sustained standing ovations and loud repeated choruses of “BRAVO!!” would shake the theatre’s proscenium and foundation – the vibrations travelling all the way to the rafters! It is no secret that Mary Martin became the favorite of Richard Rogers, who wrote the music, as well as Oscar Hammerstein II, who wrote those immortal lyrics. Mary Martin was their unabashed favorite to personify their life’s productions, not only in Sound of Music, but she was also Rogers

40 years of marriage..

A married couple in their early 60s are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.

Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table. She said, 'For being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.' The wife answered, 'Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband.'

The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.

and Hammerstein’s personal pride-and-joy, especially when Martin won the highest accolade possible for any Broadway musical play, the Tony Award, for Best Actress for their South Pacific musical in 1949. Mary Martin was a gifted genius on stage; she was also born with a miraculous photographic memory evaluated as “paragon”; what medical experts refer to in textbook medical terms as an ‘eidetic memory.”

Regarding her photographic memory in childhood, school tests were never a problem, and learning song lyrics was easy. Subsequently, her memorized lines for her stage performances were flawless to the nth degree. Mary Martin’s performance so mesmerized critics and audiences, alike, that she received countless standing ovations with every final curtain call. But then, something very mysterious crept in, like a dark shadow from the stage wings. It wasn’t noticeable at first, but, ever so slowly, something took hold of Mary Martin. Ironically, even she, herself, was unaware of this horrible encroachment. Yet,

The husband thought for a moment: 'Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again. I'm sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.' The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish! So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!... The husband became 92 years old.

Critics turned on her, and audiences ceased in their adoration. At the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York where she performed nightly in The Sound of Music, all standing ovations had ceased.

The diminutive 5’ 4” actress who hailed from Weatherford, Texas, was deeply distraught, confused, and unable to answer to her own demons as to why her glorious stage performances had suddenly turned to ashes. For the very first time in her celebrated life, she was at a total loss for words-of-explanation.

Not knowing at the time what had happened to herself, Mary Martin took time to visit her dear friend, the noted lyricist, Oscar Hammerstein II, who lay dying of cancer in the hospital. It was Hammerstein who wrote the very lyrics to The Sound of Music, of

Reduced to helplessness and collapsing in tears by his bedside, she asked the great one: “What has happened to me? What has gone wrong?” Hammerstein, it is recorded, smiled serenely then said these words to Mary Martin: “Mary, love in your heart isn’t put there to stay. Love isn’t love – until you give it away.” The following night, Mary Martin went through her paces on stage, but this time, the ending was far, far different. When she had finished, there was not a dry eye in the house; the audience then suddenly stood as one, and commenced to give one of the longest, thunderous standing ovations on record! The newspaper critics all stood erect, as well, stunned and spellbound! Stagehands, still hearing the deafening ovation from the audience, rushed to Mary Martin’s side congratulating her with excitement! Then, they asked the great question: “Mary, what happened out there, on stage, tonight?!” Martin suddenly turned silent, then, with tears rolling down her face, looked at the quizzical faces about her and answered: “Tonight . . . I gave my love away!”

Oscar Hammerstein II, died shortly after. But not before he heard of Mary’s recaptured love and triumph! And not before Mary Martin, his favorite actress, won the Tony Award for her performance in Sound of Music, on April 24, 1960. But four months later, Oscar Hammerstein II, America’s most influential lyricist, died. How truly remarkable was Mary Martin’s stage transformation back then?

Esteemed and influential Broadway critic, Richard Watts, Jr., of The New York Post was a most seasoned critic reputed to be strict and never given to exaggeration. The powerful critic studied Mary Martin’s performance that historic evening and he printed these very words in his newspaper column: “Nothing I have ever seen her do prepared me for the loveliness, humor, gift for joyous characterization and sheer ‘lovableness’ of her performance!” Even though Mary Martin achieved greater fame in her subsequent role as Peter Pan, there was never anything like that night, back in 1960, as Maria von Trapp. There may never be a more magical moment such as that, again. Remarkably, as life often has it, the world never knew of that historic behind-the-scenes drama which changed her life forever.

From that time onward, until her death on November 3, 1990 at the age of 76, Mary Martin always carried with her the words which transformed her life back then, behind the stage curtains. Stitched on her pillow – which she took everywhere in her travels -were the very words given to her by her mentor, Oscar

unspeakable horror, older brother, Floyd, died at the hospital, and the doctors gave Glenn the same eventual prognosis.

The entire lower portion of his body was burned, the flesh on his knees and shins were completely gone, as well as all the toes of his left foot! His parents were devastated. The doctors recommended amputating both legs. Glenn’s mother refused.

Not expected to survive, he somehow did. The young boy’s lowerhalf of his body was dead; his limp legs were lifeless appendages that hung, void of any movement. He may have lived, but the doctors guaranteed he would never, ever walk. How could he? His legs were shriveled, and lifeless; the legs of a pollywog seemed more robust. Confined to a wheelchair, and carried to his bed, young Glenn reached the point of no return. Then, one day it happened. It had to happen. His mother was the first to see it. An investigation was underway Sunday into a possible arson attack at a mosque in Escondido, according to authorities. A fire was reported around 3 a.m. at the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue near Escondido Boulevard, according to Escondido Police Lt. Scott Walters.

According to police, someone set a fire causing minor damage to the exterior of the mosque. When crews arrived, they also found graffiti with a hate message spray painted on the wall. A lieutenant at the scene confirmed that the graffiti referenced the terrorist attacks that killed 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, earlier this month.

The Escondido Fire Department, the Escondido Police Department, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Arson Unit responded. Detectives were investigating the incident as an arson and a possible hate crime, according to police. No injuries were reported and no information on suspects was available. Avocado Recall: Henry Avocado recalling whole avocados due to possible health risk

Henry Avocado Corporation is vol-

untarily recalling California-grown whole avocados sold in bulk at retail stores because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The corporation issued the voluntary recall due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during a routine government inspection at its California packing facility. There are no reported illnesses associated with this recall. “We are voluntarily recalling our products and taking every action possible to ensure the safety of consumers who eat our avocados,” says Phil Henry, President of Henry Avocado. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only shortterm symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Wandering Around - Took a trip to Baja, Mexico last week. My youngest son, Kenny, owns two mobile homes in La Mision (The Mission) which are perched high on a bluff, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, La Mision is a small, friendly village located halfway between Tijuana and Ensenada. As we crossed the border into Mexico I was so glad that Kenny was driving. I've driven in Tijuana and Rosarito before but did not enjoy it. It's second nature to Kenny. Until recently he'd go down to his property almost every other week. He knows all the good restaurants, the best places to surf, short-cuts . . . and the Mexicans seem to love him. There are a lot of very beautiful homes, condos, and hotels on the coast, right on the ocean-front. One condo Kenny had toured. 3000 sq feet, marble floors, absolute elegance. They sell for $400-500,000 per unit. Stateside you'd have to pay well over a million. Other homes, condos and apartments en route to Ensenada - ranging in price anywhere from as low as $100K but usually in the $200-400K range. There are American colonists who live in Baja . . . they recently opened a Costco in both Tijuana and Ensenada so they can pretty much buy any groceries they want. Most of them, however, prefer their own medical care in the states - so they have to contend with the border wait.

Unfortunately, for every beautiful home and condo on the coast line there is at least an equal number of tawdry, tumble down shacks, rusted out and dirty mobile homes, I even saw two broken down trailers right on the coast - beautiful view -

All shipments from the packing facility are subject to the recall (Henry Avocado did not begin packing there until late January 2019). Avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not subject to the recall and may continue to be sold and consumed. Henry Avocado is contacting all affected customers to confirm that the recalled products are immediately removed from store shelves. HOW TO IDENTIFY & WHO TO CALL

For conventional products purchased at retail, consumers can identify the recalled products by the “Bravocado” stickers. Henry Avocado organic products do not carry the “Bravocado” label on the sticker. Instead, those products are labeled “organic” and include “California” on the sticker. Retailers can identify Henry Avocado organic products by the bar code on the stickers. Letters to the Editor? We love ‘em! Our Readers do as well! Send them to: thepaper@coxnet

would make a nice home-site or restaurant location. Someone should buy them out and move them somewhere else and use that property to its highest and best purpose . . . but that's true of a lot of the run down properties that are otherwise in a beautiful coastal area.

After we passed through Rosarito Beach and headed south we saw the movie lot - a big 3 masted ship (on shore) where they filmed many movies, also the site where they filmed "Titanic" and you could see a western style street scene where they filmed westerns. Robert Redford filmed here. "Bet he was thrilled with Rosarito and Tijuana," I said in my best sarcastic comment. "Well, they put him up in the Rosarito Beach Hotel," said Ken. But that, while a fairly nice hotel, is not my idea of a dream location. (My idea of roughing it is The Hilton). As we journeyed on we saw billboards that said (in Spanish) "Minimum Wage is now doubled!" and "Sales tax (ad valorem) is now 8%!" (It had been 16%). And the toll roads were now free. All of this because of Mexico's new president. Are you surprised at all that the Mexican people absolutely worship him? He's doing all the right things to earn the support of the people (but irritating a lot of big money interests - those who counted on the

Being a simple country boy I thought to myself . . . "this is all great. But where is the money coming from that has been diverted from the toll road funding and the sales tax reduction?" I couldn't come up with an answer. Still haven't. Will keep an eye on Mexico's economy and politics and see what happens. There is a lot of American money in Baja, Mexico.

Kenny bought his ocean view lot a number of years ago for $35,000. Within two weeks he was offered $50,000. And turned it down. He's been offered $75,000. And turned it down. He wants to build a condo there and rent it out for $300-$400 a night. The very upscale wineries now in Baja are drawing large crowds of big money people, all of whom need lodging.

Even if I owned one of the more beautiful ocean front condos I simply would not retire to Baja. I don't want to have to cross the border for medical treatment and I'm not crazy

In total shock, she saw her little Glenn, face-down on the grass, out of the wheelchair which had imprisoned him. That little boy, so young in years, grabbed the grass with his two tiny, extended hands and, inch-by-inch, pulled himself on his stomach, across the entire length of the lawn, dragging his useless legs behind him. Running outside her Kansas farm house, she suddenly stopped, and watched her son with astonishment. Slowly, little Glenn reached the picket fence and with his hands and arms, somehow, pulled himself upward, till he leaned entirely on the fence! The illusion of standing on his own, was intoxicating! Every day since, 9-year-old Glenn practiced leaning on the kitchen table, developing his coordination and endurance. Glenn’s father and mother were astonished at their young child’s fortitude. At age 10, Glenn had learned to

Some said it more resembled hopping fast, rather than really running. The local newspaper in his hometown of Elkhart, Kansas, reported that people from all around would come visit just to witness little Glenn running the way he did! “It hurt like thunder to walk, but it didn’t hurt at all when I ran!” he once remarked.

And so the little Kansas farm boy ran everywhere! He ran around the farm, he ran to school, to the market place, all around his rural community, well, let’s just say he ran for just the pure joy of running.

“I didn’t move 10 feet without breaking into a run,” he remembers. And that about says it all. Years had passed and the enormity of the story grew. His story first caught national headlines when Glenn was a senior at Elkhart High School, in Kansas. You see, by then, that farm boy,

If it weren't for the border crossing issue it'd be a fairly nice place to visit from time to time. I, however, am not likely go back down for quite some time - simply because of the border crossing issue. We arrived at Kenny's property and, just like he said, the view was fantastic!

The long-and-the-short of it is: That boy, Glenn, was still running and setting new world track records, while the doctors -- who once wanted to amputate both his legs and had given him up for dead – were now reading about him in the papers!

Adding insult to injury, the medical experts were reading of his running exploits – demolishing national and world track records - all on those “useless” legs of his! Glenn Cunningham now stood taller than ever before and had earned three nicknames from the press: “The Kansas Flyer,” the “Elkhart Express,” and foremost, “The Iron Horse of Kansas.” He was now wildly famous! The world had never seen anything like him, before or since. His only point of reference was himself! He was a living miracle that nobody to this day – can possibly explain.

You really need to do this, dad. Get away from the office, the computer, the paper . . . come down here and just sit. And watch. And listen. And enjoy a beer or two." I tried.

But I was bored after about a half hour. After a brief nap on Kenny's very comfortable bed, we headed to La Fonda and Dimytri's - a very famous bar and restaurant, right on the water with a lovely view. Their lobsters are, supposedly, legendary. I ordered the pound and a half lobster special at $28.95 - supposedly a great price. I didn't think the price was all that great and the lobsters, while tasty, I didn't find all that remarkable. The bill, with tip, came to $150 for five of us. Not too bad. His leg problems from his crippled years as a youth still acted up, on occasion, so he finished a respectable 4th place, nearly missing a bronze medal against world competition. He tried again at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Because of lingering circulation problems in his legs (effects from the schoolhouse fire in 1916), Cunningham did an intense and lengthy regimen of warming-up exercises that included various types of stretching.

It was an improvement – this time he took 2nd place, winning a silver medal for the United States! Against world-class runners who were at their peak physical condition, Glenn Cunningham was – well, nothing short of accomplishing the impossible! On those frail legs, “The Iron

That evening we had "the family" come by to pay homage to lyle and mary. We had 18 people visit us. I do not exaggerate when I say we were treated like visiting royalty. They entered the mobile home, shook our hands, hugged us, and could not stop praising us. Families would push their babies to us for us to inspect, approve, and give our blessing. I felt a bit like a visiting priest. Or Pope. Wasn't embarrassing but I don't really care to be praised that much. I'm just a simple guy with simple tastes.

Juan Manuel had a lot of wine ... he sat next to me and Mary . . . several times dropping to his knees before us and holding our hands . . ."Layito (his name for lyle), you are my Father. Marikita, (little Mary) you are my Mother. Mucho corazon (heart). Much Love I have for you." And this went on throughout the evening. Nice, but enough is enough. I smiled and nodded and

Horse of Kansas,” continued to stun the world of sports.

In February of 1934, he set a new world mark for the mile when he ran it in 4:06.8, which stood, unmolested, for three years (until 1937). In 1936 he set a new world’s record in the 800 meters. And in 1938, he ran the world’s fastest indoor mile in 4:04.4. Just think, that was the fastest any human being had ever travelled, on foot, up to that time!

Even the Europeans runners were eager to see this “Wonder Boy” who seemed to defy the laws of gravity and the science of medicine: he should have died, let alone not become one of history’s fastest runners on two legs!

The visiting European athletes had already seen him compete on three journeys abroad, but now they demanded still another glimpse of this miracle farm boy from rural America, now considered the world’s greatest miler! He was also considered one of the world’s top middle-distance runners by top sports writers on both sides of the Atlantic.

And for good reason. In 1933 he was perfect – sweeping the 800 and 1500 meter runs at the AAU nationals, touring Europe, and completing his entire season of 20 consecutive races, all undefeated! That he had that homespun, midAmerican charm never hurt a bit, either. He was genuinely likable. He had the complete package: he was fast, world-renowned, and the best example of what America had to offer. His popularity seemed to have no bounds.

In 1936, while on the ship sailing for the Berlin Summer Olympics, he was voted “The Most Popular Athlete” by his fellow Olympians. No easy accomplishment among fiercely competitive, Olympicsized egos!

Glenn’s parents, Henry and Rosa Cunningham, had reared him proper. Glenn never let grass grow under his feet. All the time he was getting ink from the world’s press for his running exploits, he was also busy earning an education.

That boy was something else.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas, in 1933. Then his Masters degree from the University of Iowa, class of 1936.

And the frosting on the cake: he earned his coveted Ph. D (doctoral) degree from New York City University. His fields of study were – as can be expected -- in biology, health, and physical education.

The year he became Dr. Glenn Cunningham, was 1940. His last season of competition was also in 1940. Dr. Glenn Cunningham taught physical fitness education classes at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, from 1940 to 1944. After serving in the Navy during World War II, the great athlete and his wife, Ruth, settled down on an 840-acre ranch northeast of Burns, Kansas. They took in underprivileged children. Glenn never forgot about his youth and the poverty that came with it. His dad was a water-well driller and work was often scarce, so the family moved a lot, scratching out an existence.

Being poor was a painful memory, and Glenn remembers how his parents struggled hard to keep them all fed. It hurt being poor. Glenn remembered the nights there was hardly food on the table to keep them all fed, and how his baby brother, Raymond, and older sibling, Floyd, would sometimes head for bed, stomach growling from hunger. Sleep was the only thing that took the hunger away, until they woke the next morning. Glenn swore to himself that he would never let that happen to any other child in their growingup-years.

So he chased after another dream, this time establishing the “Glenn Cunningham Youth Ranch,” from which he helped over 10,000 poor and orphaned kids over a span of 30 years! But it still wasn’t enough for the mighty athlete.

Glenn quickly engaged in a foot race of a different kind, this time he raced to quickly establish a second Youth Ranch for the poor, abused, often abandoned chil-

Owed Money?

California could be holding some of your money. According to State Controller Betty Yee, California is sitting on unclaimed properties valued at $9.3 billion! But there’s great news - you can get it back. I encourage you to visit claimit.ca.gov to see if any of these unclaimed funds belong to you.

How did this huge pot accumulate? Under California’s Unclaimed Property Law, businesses like banks and insurance companies are required to transfer property to the Controller’s office if it goes unclaimed for a specified period of time, usually three years. Common types of unclaimed property are bank accounts, stocks, bonds, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, wages, and the contents of safe deposit boxes. Funds are held for as long as it takes to reunite the property with its rightful owner, which explains why the pot keeps growing. Checking to see if you have unclaimed funds is easy. Finally, the evening ended. After a night’s sleep morning came and we adjourned for breakfast at "Splash," a restaurant right on the ocean front. Delightful! We had a table right next to the window and watched the HUGE ocean waves pounding on the rocks. The name "Splash" was an apt one as, often, the waves were so large they would splash against the window. We had a wonderful breakfast, very tasty, great service, and great prices. I had a huge Denver Omelette with refried beans, rice, and plenty of tea. $6.95. I would go back there in a minute. Kenny tells me during football season it's hard to get in. Big screen tvs, lots of local and visiting Americans come down to watch the games and have a great meal and great drinks. I believe it! We finished breakfast and headed back north . . anxious to cross the border and back home ... to get a great night's sleep in my own bed.

It was a two hour wait to cross the border - which I don’t and won’t tolerate well. Thus I seldom go to Baja. This time was an exception. It will be a while before I go back. Only beause of the border wait. ••••

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

"Soldier, don't you believe in saluting an officer?" the ensign barked back at Ben.

‘Salute when you speak to me, son!’

One of Oceanside’s more colorful and fascinating characters was the late Benjamin A. Records. Well, for sure, he was a character.

Born March 6, 1924, Benny grew up with a twin brother in Riverside. To think there were two like Ben boggles the mind.

Ben was 18 when he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, becoming a radioman. This point is important because instead of "flying" into Normandy during the June 6, 1944 Dday invasion, Benny and three other Air Corps lads landed with the very first wave of infantry troops onto Omaha Beach. Their job was to set up a communications post to direct Allied aircraft on bombing targets.

It must have been a harrowing experience wading ashore with all that radio equipment while being fired upon in one of the worst combat zones in the history of warfare. "Naw," Ben recalled. "The four of us had .45s (pistols)."

Ben's team made it safely ashore. Many weeks later, after his unit had moved a number of times, additonal Air Corps personnel were brought in, including a major general (two-star).

"One night two or three of us stole the general's jeep, went into a French town and got drunk," Ben admitted. "Somehow he found out about it and was gonna pull an inspection the next morning."

Later, Ben and his buddies drove the jeep outside of the camp, disassembled it, and buried the jeep in a farmer's pasture.

"That general nearly went nuts trying to find his jeep," Ben laughed. "Some French farmer probably had himself a nice Jeep after the war."

In addition to his radio show, Demaio is also a major political activist, who speaks on tax reform.

He spoke to the San Marcos Lions Club, meeting at Cocina del Charro. San Marcos Lions Club is a chapter of Lions International, the World’s largest volunteer service organizion. The San Marcos Lions provide, equip, and maintain sight and hearing mobile test vehicles for use by North County School Districts to conduct state mandated health examinations. The Lions also use these vehicles to conduct sight tests for residents of senior living communities and others.

Ben chuckled, then casually told him there were "a few foxholes dug along the riverbank" and the officer was welcome to one if he could find it.

Later, when the Allies were crossing the Rhine River into Germany, Ben's was command communication encamped on the French side while U.S. Naval personnel, using flat-bottom landing craft, were shuttling troops and equipment across into Germany.

"The guys and officers in my unit never wore our ranks or stripes in combat zones," Ben recalled. "I was ‘slickarm’ -- a private, so I didn't have anything to wear, anyway."

One evening a young U.S. Navy ensign, with his gold bar quite visible, came up and asked Ben where the officer's quarters were?

Just then, Ben's commanding officer, an Army Air Corps colonel, walked up. Seeing that the young Naval officer was trying to pull rank on one of his men, the colonel took action. "Son, you'd better be careful," the colonel told the young ensign. "You're addressing General Benjamin Records, our commanding officer."

The young Navy ensign snapped to attention, smartly saluted Ben, then did an about face and proceeded down the riverbank to find a foxhole for the night. When Ben returned home after the War, he became a Riverside County Sheriff's deputy, among other things, before retiring to Oceanside, but that's story for another day.

Ben Records died in 2005 after a short illness, but is missed every day by his many friends around Oceanside. He always had a story – and, knowing Ben, some of them were probably true. A character indeed.

Mr. MALAPROP – Legendary film producer Samuel Goldwin was a pioneer in the industry and a modern-day “Mr. Malaprop.” He was unrivaled in his fractured English. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Goldwin came to America when he was 13. The immigration officer gave him the name of “Goldfish” because it was the closest to his Polish moniker. He later changed his name to “Goldwyn.” Here are a few of his famous fractured quips:

One of his first “mis-speaks” came when as a young producer facing severe financial problems, he declared himself “…on the brink of an abscess.” When discussing whether or not to film author Lillian Hellman’s best-selling “The Children’s Hour,” one of his staff members pointed out it wouldn’t be a good idea because the story featured two lesbians. “I don’t care – we can change that and make them Albanians.”

He accused MGM director George Cukor of “biting the hand off the goose that laid the golden egg.” A colleague asked Goldwyn in a script conference what the message of the film would be, to which he replied: “I’m just planning a movie. I’m not interested in messages. Messages are for Western Union.” One of his best: “I want a movie that starts with an earthquake and works up to a climax.”

It was a most unlikely journey that took him from his little dirt-poor farm, to the grandest stadiums in the world. Who could have imagined that such a magical life awaited him?

This fragile Kansas boy, who lived a most terrifying childhood, set on fire, and watching his brother die an agonizing death. And whose small legs were almost taken from him by amputation. How was it possible that he even survived, let alone, that he grew up to be an undisputed giant in the world of sports?

It is the zenith of irony that his severely deformed legs, his right leg was two-inches shorter than his left, would somehow evolve into a dynamic running machine that would allow this small child to someday send world records to damnation, and run – unfettered – into the record books, as well into the arms and hearts of countless millions around the globe.

Glenn Verniss Cunningham speaks of his life’s journey in his autobiography, “American Miler: The Life and Times of Glenn Cunningham.” It is a true account of human endeavor so unbelievable that his book could easily, by mistake, be placed in the fiction section of a library. Seven times, he set world indoor

records for the 1500 meters and the mile!

And he didn’t just shave world records by the fractions -- he demolished them! In 1938, competing at Dartmouth College, he exploded the world indoor record for the mile by a full two seconds! And when his legs didn’t act up, he seemed to fly rather than run. When he met Princeton University’s incredible star recordholder, Bill Bonthron on June 16, 1934, the “Iron Horse of Kansas” won by forty yards and set a new world mark of 4:06.7. From some camera angles it looks as though Glenn Cunningham is all alone at the finish line! By any sober reference, this is not supposed to happen. It goes without saying that Glenn Cunningham’s story is a major Hollywood motion picture begging to be made. And perhaps after this article is published, perhaps it will be. It is long overdue. Close your eyes for one moment. And try to imagine this: as great and as fast as he was, how much faster might he truly have been, if

The Pastor Says...

were frantic, but the child was unfazed.

Pastor Tom Fry (Retired) Church of the Nazarene

The Christian season of Lent reminds me of a favorite story in the Gospels

Jesus had gone to Jerusalem with his parents and extended family for the Passover. Perhaps you remember the story from Luke 2. Jesus was about 12 and about a day into the return trip to Nazareth, Mary and Joseph cannot find Jesus in their family and friends travel group.

Have you ever lost a child at the mall or a park or some other huge place? Worse yet, ever left a child at a stop somewhere on a journey? You can imagine how Mary and Joseph felt. They hurry back to Jerusalem and find Jesus in the temple, talking with the Rabbis and scholars. As in most cases like this, the parents

Like most “lost” children, Jesus didn’t feel lost. He knew where He was and was content in what He was doing. Moreover, in Jesus’ case, He was taking a step away from his earthly parents and toward his heavenly father and the purpose of his ministry. To bring a lost world back into fellowship with God. It was an important step in Jesus’ life and happened at the age when Jewish boys were transitioning to manhood. This is the only time the gospels mention Jesus’ childhood or teen years. Just before this, he is an infant and in the following verses, he is an adult.

Have you ever wondered what Jesus was like as one of the kids in the neighborhood? And what was Jesus like as a teenager? Can “Jesus” and “typical” be in the same sentence? These few verses about Jesus’ early years do not begin to answer our questions, but they do help us understand that God had a plan for Jesus’ life, a carefully crafted plan that led him from the manger to the cross. The good news for each of us is that God has a plan just as carefully crafted for each of our lives.

Senior residents encouraged to “Catch-a-Ride”

The City of San Marcos is helping senior residents age 60+ “Catch-a-Ride.”

By offering low-cost transportation opportunities, the program’s goal is to help give access to services, program and activities.

The Senior Activity Center (SAC) lunch shuttle takes seniors to and from the SAC for lunch at the center’s Discovery Café. For senior residents, there is a $1 suggested donation and a $3 fee for non-senior caregivers.

Seniors can also “Catch-a-Ride” through the city’s Ride Service. Provided through Facilitating Access to Coordinated Transportation (FACT), transport is available seven days a week to any location within San Marcos city limits (limited availability on weekends) for qualified participants. Rides outside city limits are for medical appointments only (20 miles max). To be eligible for these rides, residents must be 60+ years of age and meet low-income requirements; nominal fees apply.-

Seniors must be enrolled in the “Catch-a-Ride” program to take advantage of the services so call (760) 744-5535, ext. 3605.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara

Greetings Escondido!

Every time I think this is the week things may slow down a bit, it doesn’t. There are still plenty of people who want to meet me and discuss the city’s future, or show me how they are making the city a better place. We really have a lot of good people in this community. It’s exciting and motivating to see everything that people are doing. I did have the second “Meet the Mayor.” It was well attended and fun, and we had a robust discussion about the challenges of the city. One of course, was potholes. This was a common theme during the campaign as well. I know our city staff are very diligent and responsive to the pothole issue. I’m mentioning that because I want folks to know that you can report potholes on the city website. And our crews will go out and fix them.

The other topic we talked about was marijuana in the city. I would love to hear your thoughts on what we should do. If you get a chance please send me a short email on where you stand at pmcnamara@escondido.org. Thank you. Semper Fi, Mac, Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido

there never was that schoolhouse fire? Now, hold that thought quietly in your head for a few moments more. For all his physical disabilities which stayed on for his entire lifetime, and for all of life’s cruel trauma and pain, he nevertheless stands as a towering figure before us. It becomes increasingly difficult to comprehend that a man such as this, ever truly existed in flesh and bone. For all the dreams he successfully chased-after, both on and off the track, which included helping countless orphaned children, he had no equal. Now, open your eyes.

In my mind, that little Kansas farm boy never lost a foot race.

The author, Friedrich Gomez, presents yet another cover story for The Paper. This story shows his penchant for in depth research and the conclusions drawn from that data.

Something tells us that Friedrich has yet another story in the works and we’ll hear from him soon!

Free Tax Help at the Senior Center

Tax season is here and volunteers are ready to assist you.

The City is partnering with AARP in offering free tax help at the McClellan Senior Center, Tuesday through Thursday, from 9 am to 2 pm. The senior center is located at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Appointments may be made by calling the Tax line at 760.643.5290 The free service runs through April 12. If you have a few hours to spare once a month or each week, think about becoming a volunteer driver at the Senior Center.

Using volunteer drivers, the “Out and About” provides homebound residents door-to-door transportation for grocery shopping, medical appointments, and other errands. The program is so important, because it helps older adults stay independent by providing them transportation. Volunteers are needed to provide a friendly smile and to drive these seniors to their destinations. For more information or to call to volunteer, contact the McClellan Senior Center at 760.639.6160.

can ensure that more youth like Hunter are able to overcome adversity, graduate from high school with a plan for the future and follow their dreams. Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside is located at 401 Country Club Lane, Oceanside, CA 92054.

We Have a Drop-In Center – The doors are open for the soon-to-be-named Drop-In Center, a collaborative effort between Just in Time for Foster Youth and North County Lifeline. The goal, for the two organizations, is to create a warm and welcoming environment that will increase access to services and resources for North County transition age foster youth, homeless, and/or at-risk youth and young adults. The Drop-In Center is located at 302 N. Indiana Avenue, Vista. This drop-in center is designed to help overcome the geographic and transportation challenges for youth in North County seeking JIT services, and will allow JIT to increase its reach to an estimated 100 young people. LifeSpring, at North County Lifeline, will utilize the center for its current clients, and plans are underway to expand its services beyond former foster youth to offer services to homeless and at-risk transition age youth in the future. All young adults at the drop-in center will have access to case management, crisis intervention, basic needs, housing navigation, referrals to other supportive services, as well as food, internet access, recreational space, and a welcoming home-like environment. The Willow Tree Center is Seeking Help to Reach Their Goal – Will you help us reach our goal? The Willow Tree has a goal of reaching 15 more classes or 400 students with meditation before the end of this year. And here's one reason why: “If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.” – Dalai Lama. If we are to create the change that leads to peace in our community we need a peace center from which to offer our classes and programs. We found a building with a beautiful space that is 1600 s.f. and it's just about perfect for our needs. It's in Oceanside and is easily accessible for those we will be serving; and the rent is only $2500/mo, including utilities. If you can help or if you have a building you'd like to donate for our programs and the people we serve please contact us by clicking the link below. If we want to create a better future we have to be better humans. So be the change you wish to see in the world. It takes a village and our village is the businesses that know the benefits of offering their employees mindfulness and meditation. It is exciting to know that some of proceeds from our business packages go directly back to the underserved and socio-economically disadvantaged community members. In addition there are job opportunities. We are

Last week we began a conversation on how the Internet has affected the personal computer industry in general and The Computer Factory in particular. The first 30 years of the PC age (19802010) was marked by constant change. Driven by technology, every two years, speeds of CPUs and memory doubled, storage size doubled and Microsoft released a new OS. Your new PC cost well over a thousand dollars and was obsolete within two years. All this began to change about the time Microsoft released Windows XP in 2001. Windows XP rapidly replaced Win98 and ME, shrugged off Windows Vista in 2007 and maintained its domi-

Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside is a community-based organization dedicated to providing a safe, fun and constructiveNew USO Center Opens at Camp Pendleton – Nonprofit lends support to local military community on one of America’s largest Marine Corps bases. On March 26th, there was a grand opening ceremony of USO’s new Center at Camp Pendleton. >From wellness and entertainment to transition services, the USO center serves as a home away from home for service members and military families – providing them with opportunities to connect, relax and recharge. The Center will allow the USO to work with other local military community partners dedicated to strengthening our men and women in uniform to include a USO Pathfinder® site made possible by The Boeing Company. The USO Pathfinder program helps service members and military spouses plan for what’s next by connecting them with the services, opportunities and resources that help them successfully transition from active-duty service member to thriving Veteran. Camp Pendleton, home to more than 45,000 service members, is the site of a new USO Center with programs and services designed to keep our men and women in uniform resilient and strong. USO programming helps support readiness for the Marines and Sailors of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, along with thousands of other active duty and reserve service members from all branches of the

nant position for an astounding ten years. Then Windows 7, released in 2009, rapidly overtook Windows XP. After ten years it still shares equal billing with windows 10. The multicore processors introduced by AMD and Intel ten years ago were as fast or faster than the CPUs Dell, HP and Lenovo use in many models of new “retail” PCs today. Giant terabyte hard drives also became available in 2009. By 2011 home and small business PC sales began to drop. For many home and small business users PC technology had “hit the wall.” Newer, bigger and faster had lost its appeal. Users kept what they had because it worked for what they needed.

Some power applications like animation, design, audio/video transcription, solids modeling and high end gaming still demand and can use all the processing speed and power that advancing technology can provide. The vast majority of home and small business owners however, get little or no benefit from faster CPUs and graphics. The fact that the Internet has come to dominate home user PC usage patterns means that computer speeds are relatively unimportant. Business’s use many stand alone (off line) applications but accounting, point of sale, printing and word processing applications don’t benefit from higher speed processors and graphics. Most still prefer Windows 7 for its stability and familiarity and the fact that it is compatible with all their applications.

ing systems are more trouble than benefit to many of our home and small business customers. Their power needs are modest and changing applications or operating systems simply is an annoying waste of time and money, particularly when they see no benefit. Our job is to help our customers find the best option for their unique set of applications. Sometimes that means building or helping to design a new PC for with the latest and greatest processing and Video components and even Windows 10. Those are exceptions. Most our efforts involve repairing or upgrading existing systems to meet customer needs or finding corporate “refurbs” that fit the precise needs of our users. “Refurbs” are flexible so a

commercial level Dell, HP or Lenovo PC (desktop or laptop) could be a sub $300 basic system or be reconfigured to a “power PC” by increasing RAM, upgrading the video, adding an SSD (solid state drive) with Win 7 or 10 “Professional” all for half the price of a comparable new “retail” PC.”

Buying a new “retail” PC for your home or small business is simply wasting money. If your existing PC cannot be upgraded to meet your needs a “refurb” is a far smarter solution. Bring your old notebook or desktop in for a free evaluation. If it’s not worth fixing or upgrading we’ll tell you right where to put it. We recycle too.

The bottom line for us here at the Computer Factory is that the latest and greatest speed, technology and operatmilitary who work and train on the base throughout the year. The Center is equipped with a USO Mobile sprinter van to help navigate 125,000-acre base and provide outreach to the surrounding military community. The Center will offer computers, free Wi-Fi and printing, a lounge area, gaming consoles, and a bistro.

The USO goes where no other nonprofit can to keep members of the military connected to everything that gives meaning to their services. With more than 200 locations around the world, the USO provides entertainment, programming and transition services to the nearly five million active duty, guard and reserve and their families. In its 78th year, the USO continues to carry out its mission to strengthen service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country – and rallies America to show support for our men and women in uniform by serving a Force Behind the Forces®. For more on USO support to Marines over the years, visit our story on uso.org. The USO is a private, nonprofit organization, not a government agency. The programs, services and entertainment tours are made possible by the American people, support of our corporate partners, and the dedication of the volunteers and staff.
