Ironically, the greatest Top Secret weapon of WWII still remains just that today.

Most people in the world today still do not know what that "Top Secret Weapon" was which helped turn the tide of the Second World War around; saved countless human lives; and was what historians now describe as: "History's

unlikely, and most unconventional Top Secret Weapon of World War II."

When anyone thinks of the greatest secret weapons of World War II we immediately think of the Manhattan Project which created the world's first two atomic bombs (code named "Little Boy" and "Fat Man," respectively). These atomic bombs were, unquestionably, the mightiest and most lethal weapons ever unleashed in human history.

Little Boy and Fat Man were without question, the greatest Top Secret Weapon in history, and they brought the Second World War to conclusion, saving countless more human lives in the process. But, the aforementioned "Top Secret Manhattan Project" and the "Top Secret Atomic Bombs" it produced are common knowledge around the world today. But there was another unknown WWII Top Secret weapon that was

saving countless human lives and even, shockingly, turned the tide of war around in favour of the Allied Forces prior to the first two atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In 1938, nearly eight years before the first two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan in 1945, there was another mysterious, super colossal, and devastatingly-effective WWII weapon that was so secret . . . that to this very day, over 80% of the adult human populace on planet Earth, still, are unaware

This, is their most remarkable true story – still vastly unknown, undiscovered, and unappreciated.

What was it?

THE WORLD WAS ON THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION. The mid-1940s brought a most frightening reality: the German army had succeeded in conquering all of Western Europe. On the seas, Hitler’s U-boats were creating havoc as well.

of it -- or how it changed the entire landscape of the War to End All Wars. Why is it still not commonly known around the world today? And why are global historians today still amazed and shocked at how successful it was, despite all the negative drawbacks which should have doomed it from the start.

Unlike the Manhattan Project which was conducted by the world's top scientists -- by contrast, this “other Super Secret WWII Weapon” was totally composed-- not of scientists -- but only composed of common misfits, uneducated odd-balls, social outcasts, and various eccentrics, literally, gathered from off the streets of London, England - all of whom would shock the entire world and reshape the entire landscape of the Second World War. How was this all possible?

And who were these forgotten, unheralded common everyday citizens – a most dubious collection of undisciplined common street people, totally ignorant of any military training; pedestrian people of odd behaviour whom you may often see and avoid when walking on the streets today?

A man is waiting for his wife to give birth.

The doc comes in and tells the dad that his son was born without torso, arms or legs. The son is just a head! But the dad loves his son and raises him as well as he can, with love and compassion. After 21 years, the son is old enough for his first drink. Dad takes him to the bar, tearfully tells the son he is proud of him and orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy. With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the bartender shaking his head in disbelief, the boy takes his first sip of alcohol. Swoooop! - A torso pops out!

The bar is dead silent; then bursts into a whoop of joy.

The father, shocked, begs his son to

This is one of the most unlikely and bizarre chapters in all of human warfare, ancient to modern.

In the Atlantic, German U-boats were sinking Allied convoys that were carrying critical supplies for the war, threatening to bring Britain to its knees by cutting off her only lifeline.

On all fronts, the outlook was beginning to look grimmer by the day for the Allied Forces. Something had to be done to turn the tide of the war, and something had to be done quickly, or else.

That something, that secret weapon, which Britain desperately needed, was now beginning to emerge, stronger and stronger, just 50 miles north of London, in a mysterious parcel of land known as Bletchley Park. Its seeds were first planted after the First World War.

drink again.

The patrons chant "Take another drink!" But the bartender still shakes his head in dismay. Swoooop! - Two arms pop out.

The bar goes wild. The father, crying and wailing, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant "Take another drink!" The bartender ignores the whole affair. By now the boy is getting tipsy, and with his new hands he reaches down, grabs his drink and guzzles the last of it. Swoooop! - Two legs pop out.

The bar is in chaos. The father falls to his knees and tearfully thanks God. The boy stands up on his new legs and stumbles to the left.... then to the right...through the front door, into the street, where a truck runs over him and kills him instantly! The bar falls silent. The father moans in grief.

The bartender sighs and says... "That boy should have quit while he was a head!" •••• The man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me."

Willie Nelson canceled an upcoming concert in April. No explanation was given for the cancellation. Some have speculated that he might not be in stellar health. I can only hope and pray the 88-year-old is okay. I’m not sure how Willie Nelson got mixed up in my memories, but he is. My brain’s most replayed memories seem to include the music of Willie Hugh Nelson as a soundtrack. Truthfully, I’m not sure why I liked Willie so much. Maybe it was because I’m a redhead like him. "That's absolutely amazing!" his father says. "How do I get him in that program?" "Just send him down here with $1000," the boy says, "I'll get him into the course."

So, his father sends the dog and the $1000. About two-thirds of the way through the semester, the money runs out. The boy calls his father again. "So how's Fido doing, son?" his father asks.

Britain had established a brain trust, a military establishment of the most brilliant minds to figure out and break various secret codes by the enemy.

GERMANY’S INGENIOUS “ENIGMA CODE” WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO BREAK. But disaster struck when Britain’s greatest and most versatile minds were unable to break Germany’s ingenious Enigma Code, which was so advanced, and so complex, as to be considered impenetrable.

But then, something strange, something unimaginable happened in 1938 when the military-trained code-breakers were relocated to Bletchley Park, at a sprawling multi-level mansion.

BRITAIN’S SHOCKING, DESPERATE EXPERIMENT CALLED “RIDICULOUS” & “IMPOSSIBLE.” Shockingly, Britain’s Government Code and Cipher School (GC&CS) suddenly decided to take a most startling departure from its ranks and begin recruiting civilians that were not government-trained, not graduates of military academies and in fact, common every day citizens, many of whom had never even seen a code before, let alone solved one. recruiting ordinary people of high intelligence, but with no codebreaking experience or military training is, in retrospect, a most astonishing attempt to “think outside the box” in a last, desperate attempt to decode Germany’s Enigma code which, up to this point, was technologically invincible. The importance of cracking the Enigma code was considered invaluable, even crucial to winning the war:

“If Enigma would be penetrated, everything Hitler plotted would be known in advance. Access to the enemy’s inner-most secrets could alter the outcome of World War II.” (“Decoding Nazi Secrets,” Nova Public Television, DVD, 1999.)

Unknown to the world at large, there emerged a most startling secret notion that would parlay into one of history’s greatest secret weapons which would turn the tide of the war in Europe and change the course of history, forever. Recruitment of nondescript civilians began in the late 1930s and continued onward.

These newly-hired civilian codebreaking candidates were added to the already established militarytrained code-breakers at Bletchley Park. According to historian and author, Sinclair McKay (“The Lost World of Bletchley Park”), the British already had thousands of

In one 1941 recruiting strategy, the British government secretly asked The Daily Telegraph newspaper to organize and publish a very sophisticated and very advanced crossword puzzle competition.

Willie didn’t write stupid songs. He wrote poetry set to music. He wrote sonnets about cowboys, unrequited love, and angels who flew too close to the ground.

So, in light of what Mr. McKay said, why add more at Bletchley Park, especially from the civilian sector? The pivotal idea was to get fresh blood, fresh thinking, and a fresh perspective from potential civilian code-breakers.

From the results of this contest, the best and most perceptive minds were contacted and asked to “Be involved in a particular type of work as a contribution to the war effort.” In their own words, the British War Office set about seeking: “Top solvers of cryptic crossword puzzles, as these individuals had strong lateral thinking skills.”

The recruitment of profound and eclectic thinkers, fresh and untainted by conventional warfare tactics was a stroke of genius. With this unorthodox recruiting process, Bletchley Park soon became populated by a very strange and oddball collection of the new soon-to-be

A few days ago, I was in traffic, flipping past songs on the radio when I landed on a new country song by Trace Atkins, featuring Luke Bryant, and rapper Pitbulll. The tune was entitled, “Where the Country Girls At?” I almost wrecked my truck on purpose.

The man made it acceptable to be a country musician with an actual vocabulary.

Last month, my wife and I moved. And while we were packing our billions of corrugated cardboard boxes, I came across a container of LP records I’d forgotten about. So one night before supper, I dug up an old turntable that has been in my family since the William Howard Taft administration. My wife and I listened to music that was, essen-

Fatal Traffic Collison on Carlsbad Boulevard at Solamar Drive

On March 26, at 2:37 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Carlsbad Boulevard and Solamar Drive due to a traffic collision.

Officers found the 24-year-old, male rider of a motorcycle had been traveling northbound on Carlsbad Boulevard when he lost control and crashed near Solamar Drive. Preliminary investigation estimates the motorcycle was travelling in excess of 90 mph.

The collision caused the motorcycle gas tank to become dislodged and a fire was started in nearby vegetation. The motorcycle rider was also burned. The fire was quickly extinguished by the Carlsbad Fire Department.

The rider was transported by air ambulance to UCSD Burn Center, but later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased driver will be confirmed by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing.

NCTD Cuts Back on Breeze Route Service Due to Shortage of Drivers

A shortage of bus drivers will force the North County Transit District to temporarily reduce the frequency of service on its busiest Breeze routes beginning April 3.

Times between buses on the routes will go from15 to 20 minutes apart to one bus every 30 minutes, said Chris Orlando, chief of planning, marketing and communications for the district.

“We hope to restore service as staffing levels normalize in the coming months,” Orlando said at the transit district’s board meeting last week. The recent wave of COVID-19 infections combined with an ongoing shortage of drivers has forced the district to cancel anywhere from 10 to 50 bus trips a day, according to a district report. The district is down 33 drivers from what it considers full staffing for the Breeze bus routes. Oceanside City Manager Deanna Lorson Abruptly Resigns

More Restaurant Reviews: We stopped in for a visit to Mikko Sushi, 231 E Grand Ave, Escondido,

I love sushi! Granted, sushi is an acquired taste, as is wasabi, the hot, green Japanese mustard which is often mixed with soy sauce and then used as a dipping sauce for pieces of sushi . . . and so we began our feast.

We ordered, as an appetizer, Edamame, Baby soybeans, boiled and salted, $4.50. We munched on these as we awaited our orders.

For my ex-wife, Mary, we ordered the Beef Teriyaki Bowl at $12.95. Charbroiled, marinated beef topped with house-made teriyaki sauce. A very generous serving and she couldn’t finish it all so we brought it home and dear old dad polished it

Mikko Sushi is spotlessly clean, all white interior . . . well lit, comforable seating, both tables and booths. Service was quite good. Mikko’s is a bit more expensive than other sushi restaurants I’ve visited and I did not see any special packages where, for one price, you get a variety of sushi presentations. Would I go back?

Yup, Enjoyed my visit. Nice, clean, well run sushi restaurant; they also have a location in Carlsbad at 1025 Carlsbad Village Road. We have not visited that location.

liquid. Usually, I get my shrimp cocktails served, on ice, with cocktail sauce. This shrimp cocktail was good . . and worth the price . . but I prefer the other form of serving.

A few things have changed, partly due to the pandemic. Like most restaurants, Four Tunas has had to raise the prices on some of their menu items. Still, on balance, the prices are reasonable.

Another disappointment: Four Tunas had a delightful feature of bringing you a ceramic bowl of delicious soup as part of any entree; it was included in the price. I didn’t get any soup, and I am a great soup lover.

We were delighted when Four Tunas opened up a bit more than a year ago . . . lovely decor, great wait staff, variety of seafoods offered, full bar. Very reasonable prices.

During the pandemic the owners also took the time to upgrade the already attractive decor. Very modern, up to date, colorful venue. Service is excellent and prompt.

Food has always been quite good but I was a bit disappointed in my order of 9 oysters on the half shell, at $15.95. No cocktail sauce. Typically, I expect cocktail sauce, horseradish, and lemons with my oysters. I got lemons but no sauce. It was explained to me that these oysters were served “Mexican Style,” which, I guess, means “no cocktail sauce.” So, I probably will not be orderering oysters again at Four Tunas. I also orderd a large shrimp cocktail, at $19.95. This was large, but served in a large cocktail glass with lots of shrimp but immersed in some type of red

Mary had two fish tacos @ $2.50 each. Delicious and at a bargain price. Mary is a light eater so we wound up taking one of the tacos home.

As I was paying my bill and checking out I inquired about the soup. I was told it still was part of the serving but either (a) you have to ask for it, or (b) our server, though very pleasant, was new on the job and was unaware of the tradition. Will I go back?

You bet! Four Tunas is a family owned and operated business. Teresa, the floor manager, is very efficient, very friendly, and knows her job well. The wait staff is well trained (even those who are new on the job) . . . and, in general, we were most pleased. If you haven’t already, give either one or both of these restaurants a try. They are both well worth your time and patronage.

code-breakers: chess champions, linguists (experts in languages and the recognition of their various hidden meanings), Egyptologists (experts in ancient Egyptian language, art, and history), mathematicians, students, lawyers, university professors, crossword puzzle fanatics and other riddle-solvers.

THEY WERE BRILLIANT BUT SO ECCENTRIC THAT TOWN FOLK THOUGHT THEY WERE FROM LUNATIC ASYLUM! Yes, they were brilliant, unconventional, and – as genius is often viewed – they were often seen as a collection of rule-breaking eccentrics, even social misfits, perhaps what some today might refer to as ‘intellectual nerds.’ These civilian recruits often caused surrounding town folk to view them as weird and sometimes, uncomfortable to be around.

In fact, archival records reveal that Bletchley’s surrounding community began to believe that this collection of unusual citizens were, in fact, from some lunatic asylum (Historian, Sinclair McKay, Ibid). One such example of eccentricity was personified by one of Bletchley Park’s most brilliant young recruits, named Alan Turing. A towering genius, Turing was a research Fellow at Cambridge College at the young age of 22. He even created the fundamental basis for the first complicated computing machine. Yet, even his colleagues said of him, “He had funny manners.” (Peter Hilton, Bletchley Park code-breaker). Nonetheless, Alan Turing was an undisputed genius: “He constantly surprised us with his originality,” Hilton added. “He was very shy,” fellow code-breaker, Sarah Baring recalls. “He used to -- bless his heart -- walk down to the canteen and, curiously, walk in a sideways motion with his head down. But, he was a star. We all thought he was such a wonderful person.” But Turing was not the only eccentric at Bletchley Park.

In general, they all were perceived as different.

WINSTON CHURCHILL INTRIGUED AT THEIR GENIUS & ECCENTRIC BEHAVIOUR. Their unusual nature and odd behavior even took British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, by surprise. Inspecting the new experiment with non-military code-breakers at Bletchley Park, on September of 1941, Churchill commented to Commander Alastair Denniston, Operations Head of the code-breaking school, “I told you to leave no stone unturned to get this staff, but I had no idea you had taken me so literally!” Churchill had met chess champi-

Page 5 • • March 31, 2022

ons, Hugh Alexander and Stuart Milner-Barry, and mathematicians Derek Taunt, Jack Good, Bill Tutte, and Max Newman, as well as historian Harry Hinsley, and a collection of students, puzzle fanatics and crossword experts.

It was the strangest kettle of fish that Churchill had ever seen come together to represent Britain’s top secret military experiment. However, in time, they would not disappoint. They would, in fact, commence to shock the world with their unrivalled, collective genius. Nevertheless, their often strange and idiosyncratic exploits caused the Government Code and Cypher School to nickname them “The Golf, Cheese and Chess Society.”

One unique codebreaker was often seen pacing around the lake drinking coffee while in deep abstract thought. When he would finish his cup of coffee he would, suddenly, look at the empty cup in deep surprise, not remembering that he had periodically drunk from it while lost in thought, contemplating an encoded message. Unsure how the cup even came into his possession, he would simply toss it over his shoulder and into the lake. As a whole, these newly-added civilian code-breakers were the exact opposites of their military code-breaker counterparts, in more ways than one. Aside from their unconventional behaviour, they were even treated differently by the British Government Code and Cipher School. They were not required to follow military disciplines, such as uniforms, and ranks -- none of which would apply to them.

Little did the world realise that this collection of whimsical individuals would become heroic in accomplishing the seemingly impossible: they would succeed in breaking the various German Enigma codes from not only the German ground forces, but also the unique Enigma codes of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) known as Luftwaffe Red, as well as the German Naval Enigma. As a consequence of all this, many key battles now shifted in our favour, and as a result, countless lives were saved within our Allied Forces. For example, breaking Germany’s Luftwaffe Red Enigma code allowed Bletchley Park to inform the British Royal Air Force (RAF) not only how the Luftwaffe was organised, but what it was planning to do in advance. Also, historians agree that the Battle of the Atlantic might have been lost if the Bletchley Park code-breakers had failed to penetrate the German’s Navy Enigma codes, all of which allowed our Armed Forces to prepare and defuse the enemy’s plans. In the summer of 1941 Bletchley Park was able to crack the German Navy’s Enigma code in less than two days. Convoys could now be re-routed on

the seas, thus avoiding the deadly German U-boats.

On June 23, 1941 Bletchley Park saved a British convoy from a deadly U-boat attack (involving 10 German submarines). Bletchley Park’s decoded Enigma messages even allowed the Allies to setup a counter-attack, sinking two German U-boats in the process.

“Code-breakers became so proficient that they would instruct the RAF to drop mines in a particular stretch of seas.” (“Decoding Nazi Secrets,” Ibid.) This allowed the British Royal Air Force to counterstrike with pin-point accuracy since they now knew of the exact secret locations of the submerged German submarine wolf packs that lay in deadly-waiting. That these perceived oddballs from off the streets of Britain could use a unique vantage point of their intellect to penetrate The Third Reich’s Enigma code was quite astonishing, to say the least. Historically, how vital were these contributions of Bletchley Park?

Historians are best equipped to answer such a daunting question: “The code-breakers were now not only learning about Enigma, but about the whole system of warfare communications, which had an impact on an entire military campaign.” (“Decoding Nazi Secrets,” Ibid.)

Even the brilliant desert campaign of Germany’s Erwin Rommel (the Desert Fox) was thwarted by the brilliance of Bletchley Park. Rommel’s campaign depended on the Enigma communications, as he relied, totally, on the Italians to bring in critical supplies for his Panzer Army divisions. Because of Bletchley Park’s code-breaking, the RAF was able to not only pinpoint the location of any Italian oil tankers but even know exactly how much gasoline they were carrying. The secret locations and planning of Rommel’s supply convoy gave the RAF easy targets in attacking the Italian convoys crossing the Mediterranean Sea, thus cutting off the Desert’s Fox’s critical life-line of supplies. Rommel was previously winning his desert campaign, but because of Bletchley Park’s nondescript codebreakers, Rommel was now losing because his supplies were always sunk in the Mediterranean waters.

These war victories were greatly cheered by Allied Forces, but due to the ultra-secrecy surrounding Bletchley Park’s mysterious mansion, the code-breakers, themselves, remained unheralded. Nevertheless, they were content that the war was being won.

For this raggle-taggle band of irregular code-breakers, winning the war was reward enough without having to be in the bright sunlight of recognition. Throughout the war, Germany peri-

odically tweaked and reset the Enigma coding machines making it necessary for the Bletchley Park code-breakers to restart their penetration efforts all over again, from scratch. It was a horrendous and taxing ordeal requiring highly unusual focus, stamina, and brain-power that only these recruits seemed capable of. In the historic naval Battle of Matopan, in the Spring of 1941, the Bletchley Park Mansion of codebreakers, again, were the architects of another major victory.

The British fleet was based in the Egyptian port of Alexandria, under the direction of Admiral Andrew Cunningham. A critical Enigma message was decoded in the middle of the night by Bletchley Park’s Mavis Lever, who rushed downstairs to frantically present her findings. Her decoding was towering in its impact. Within hours, her decoded message was sent to Admiral Andrew Cunningham. Its contents were both shocking and frightening.

The Italian fleet was planning to attack a British convoy at midnight. Since the port of Alexandria was crawling with spies, all watching every move by Admiral Cunningham, he was now in a serious dilemma. If Cunningham suddenly took his fleet out to sea, then the Italian spy network would know that their secret was decoded. If Cunningham did nothing, then a British convoy would be sent to the bottom of the sea. The spies knew the admiral loved to golf, and Cunningham used this as a crafty ruse.

The admiral disembarked his ship and went on shore at Alexandria to play golf. Under the cover of darkness, Cunningham secretly slipped back on board ship and led the British fleet out to sea. Cunningham led his fleet directly to the spot where the Italian ships had gathered for their ambush. Cunningham’s British fleet caught the Italian ships completely by surprise and made them pay a heavy price. The Italians lost almost 3,000 men and the battle, which was the crème de la crème of their navy. It was another major coup by the Bletchley Park mansion codebreakers.

Later, a grateful Admiral Cunningham secretly visited the sprawling acreage of Bletchley Park to personally thank the codebreakers who had averted a major naval disaster. It was thanks enough for the code-breakers. Meanwhile, the British newsreels were cheered by countless Allies when news touted “The Greatest Naval Engagement Thus Far in the War: the Battle of Matopan.”

The world never knew of Churchill’s secret war weapon at Bletchley Park.

Throughout the war, over and over again, these remarkable secret code-breakers saved countless lives by derailing disasters that were planned by the enemy. Eventually, American code-breakers were flown across the Atlantic to Bletchley Park to collaborate and work with their British counterparts. But prior to this, the ponderous question still remains: how were the Bletchley Park men and women, ever able to accomplish the seemingly impossible in the first place?

IT WOULD TAKE A MODERN SUPER COMPUTER TODAY A YEAR TO MATCH THEIR SPEED & PROBLEM SOLVING! The German Enigma machine could scramble a message in millions upon millions of different variations. Regarding the German’s Enigma code, Tony Sale, Bletchley Park historian, said: “The complexity is enormous. If I sent just one message on an Enigma machine, today, it would still take a super great computer – the fastest in the world – a year to go through, searching for that one message to validate what that message might have been.”

It was never easy for the Bletchley Park code-breakers. Hitler kept upgrading the Enigma machines, making the code-breakers start all over again, from square one. In response, the brilliance of Bletchley Park’s Alan Turing seemed off-thechart. Turing invented an electromechanical device called the “bombe,” an astonishing creation to help probe and continue decoding Hitler’s Enigma machines. It was nicknamed the bombe because of the ticking sound it produced. But then, Germany created another new coding device called the Lorenz. Bletchley’s most profound decoder, Alan Turing, soon built a rudimentary replica of Hitler’s Lorenz cipher machine!

ENGLAND’S STILL FORGOTTEN HEROES & GENIUSES WHO RESHAPED THE WORLD, THEN AND NOW. The British were simply amazing in their depth of intellectual resources. Thomas H. Flowers, a brilliant engineer at the British Post Office laboratories, created the world’s first programmable computer. Flowers installed the first programmable computer at Bletchley Park over the Christmas holidays, in 1943. Eventually, ten more were added there. These computers, collectively, would be known as Colossus. Because of the top secrecy of these proceedings, Colossus, sadly, was not recognised as the world’s first programmable computer today. Instead, that his-

Page 6

torical honour went to America’s Eniac computer.

In actual truth, the roots of today’s modern computer era trace back directly to the inventive geniuses of Alan Turing and Thomas Flowers.

“APART FROM ATOM BOMB, THERE WAS NO GREATER SECRET OF WORLD WAR II.” For over thirty years after the war, Bletchley Park’s contributions in winning the war remained top secret. Nevertheless, Bletchley Park’s contributions gave the Allied Forces a critical edge in the U-boat battles, the tank battles against Rommel, the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day), and many others. At war’s end, jubilation and dancing in the streets commenced with the world paying tribute to their war heroes. Sadly, Bletchley Park decoders were never mentioned. “Apart from the Atom bomb, there was no greater secret of World War II than the work of the code-breakers at Bletchley Park.” (“Decoding Nazi Secrets,” war historians, Ibid, 1999) After the war, many of these heroic decoders went back to their simple, anonymous lives. Thomas Flowers returned to the post office and was soon forgotten. Only a few stayed on to work for the British Secret Service.

The most imaginative thinker of them all, Alan Turing, sadly took his own life.

In 1964 he was persecuted for being a security risk simply because he was labeled as a homosexual.

Tragic, because he helped Bletchley Park’s community save hundreds of thousands of precious human lives, perhaps even millions.

And he helped save his own country, and the entire world, in the process. Historically, this is one of the most remarkable war stories of all time.

Especially in view of the fact that these achievements were attained by ordinary civilian men and women.

“When people think of winning wars, they quickly think of guns and bullets. But, I think Bletchley Park is a great example – particularly for the young generation, now – that you can defeat the enemy, intellectually.” (Tony Sale, Bletchley Park historian)

In the end, the unthinkable was realised, and the impossible was accomplished from a most ridiculous concept, and by the most unlikeliest of human beings ever gathered together. The mysterious goings-on at Bletchley Park, according to war historians, helped shorten the war in Europe by two to

AG Day in California

This year California observed AG Day on March 23rd; a day we celebrate our state's unique contributions to the nation’s food supply. California has been recognized as the country’s number one agricultural state for over 60 years, supplying about 50 percent of our fruit, vegetables and nuts.

chios, grapes, along with cattle and calves. Less than 2 percent of the state’s population is engaged in agriculture, yet each worker today feeds more than 165 people, compared to just 25 in 1960. In 1949, 22 percent of disposable household income was spent on food; today it’s only 11 percent.

Agriculture is a major contributor to our state’s economy. According to the 2019 Crop Report, California exported $21.7 billion in agricultural commodities around the world. Top commodities for export included dairy products, almonds, pista-

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R-Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

AG Day gives me an opportunity to remind my Northern California colleagues of this region’s significance in maintaining our agricultural leadership. According to the San Diego County Farm Bureau, San Diego County ranks as the 19th largest farm economy out of over 3,000 U.S. counties. We are the number 1 producer of nursery crops and avocados, number 2 in guavas, pomegranates, limes and macadamias. We rank 5th in lemon production, 9th in strawberries and 10th in egg laying hens. We have more small farms (under 10 acres) than any county in the nation. We also rank number 2 in farms with women as the principal operator.

Since agriculture is vital to our state and regional economies, we must do all we can to see that it flourishes, including providing reliable and affordable sources of water. I am a member of the Bipartisan Rural Caucus, a group of legislators working to achieve consensus on issues facing California’s rural/agricultural areas. I will continue to do everything possible to support our irreplaceable agriculture industry.

AG Pass

At our last Board of Supervisors meeting, I brought forth an item directing County staff to explore the creation of an "Agriculture Pass". An Ag Pass can provide limited access during a wildfire or emergency to restricted areas in order to care for agriculture assets such as feeding animals, transporting livestock, and irrigating valuable crops. This Board letter comes from the stories I’ve heard from community members during emergencies. Many ranchers and farmers have ignored evacuation orders, knowing that once they leave, they may not be able to return to their property to care for their animals and crops. Others have been evacuated only to eventually make the difficult choice to bypass roadblocks to access their farm or ranch, risking their safety and a misdemeanor charge to ensure the welfare of their animals. This AG pass would not be an automatic entry back into an emergency area, as it will be up to emergency personnel, but it could encourage more to evacuate knowing they could have return access their property when it's safe. Farmers and ranchers would undergo training and certification for how to navigate fire areas safely.

Several California counties have already created a county-based Ag Pass program and have had great success. The Ag Pass cards are an opportunity to identify vetted commercial farm and ranch owneroperators and their employees to firefighting personnel, California Highway Patrol officers, Sheriff deputies, other law enforcement officers, and emergency personnel during an emergency.

I’m pleased to say that the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Board letter and will now explore the feasibility of developing an Ag Pass program. County staff will now work with stakeholders and report back in 180 days with a plan to implement this program, if feasible. I will keep you updated! To contact

three years, and turned the tide of World War II and, in so doing, saved countless lives, and helped shape the history of the world.

Today, Alan Turing’s brain child, the bombe, which he created to help save the world from tyranny, can still be viewed in 2022. In his honour and, in tribute to him, a working rebuilt bombe is now preserved at the Bletchley Park Museum.

It no longer makes the ticking sound, as in Turing’s first version. Oddly enough, when the rebuilt model of Alan Turing’s brainchild failed to tick as with its original model, it seemed poignant in the minds of many: Like the rhythm of a valiant heart, the ticking sound had ceased, along with the heart of its creator, Alan Turing. Bletchley Park code-breakers – England’s greatest and most unusual secret weapons of World War II.

Gone, but not forgotten. They were true war heroes.

PROBLEM SOLVED

Q: I went on Samsung's website in November 2020 and requested a recommendation from their salesperson for a television that is compatible with the MLB app. I have a copy of the chat. I purchased a 58" Class TU7000 Crystal UHD 4K Smart TV based on the company's written recommendation. I could not test the television until April 2021, when the baseball season started. And when I did, the app didn't work.

I have copies of all e-mails between Samsung and me. First, Samsung said the TV was past the return deadline. Then they promised they would give me an in-warranty repair. But the problem with that is you can't make a television compatible with a simple repair. Then, in another email, they claimed there is no fault with the television and there's nothing they can do. I believe Samsung should take responsibility for its mistake. They sold me the wrong television. I'd like to return the TV and get a refund of $385. I hope you can help me with this. -- Tom Moran, Naples, Fla.

A: Samsung should have given you the correct advice. The TV you ordered is not compatible with the MLB app. But you wouldn't discover this until the baseball season started, months after your purchase, and that complicated matters.

I'm not sure what the representatives meant when they said your TV was past the return window. For your TV, you had a a one-year warrantythat didn't apply to this situation. The monitor worked fine, but not as promised. I'm in awe of the paper trail you kept. Not only did you save the online chat

Page 7

between you and Samsung -- the one where they said the monitor would work with the MLB app -- but you also have an email in which Samsung promises to accept the return of the TV. That's all you needed to resolve this case.

Or was it? Well, when I reviewed Samsung's paper trail, it appeared to backtrack, telling you it had no record of a promise made about compatibility, claiming the TV was out of warranty when it technically never was "in" warranty, and then pivoting and agreeing to an in-warranty repair, which was doomed to fail. Wow, what a mess.

You could have appealed this home run of a case to Samsung's executives. I contacted Samsung on your behalf. It refunded the purchase price of your TV, as promised.

When Washington (D.C.) Went to War

As the winds of war once again begin to blow, it is interesting to take a look back at how our nation became the world’s leading armed force. There are numerous historical resources to call upon but one book I first read some 35 years ago chronicles just how unprepared this nation was for our defense, let alone launch any sort of offensive movement.

Q: In February 2020, I bought two Britrail England Flexi Passes through ACP Rail, a travel agency specializing in rail passes.

I never got the money.

I checked with ACP multiple times. Whenever I did, it would send me emails that said "due to government restrictions" its offices were closed. It blamed the closure on a delay in processing our refund. "We will follow up and confirm as soon as possible," they promised. But I never received a confirmation.

As I write this, it is November 2021 - almost two years after I bought my Britrail passes -- and I still haven't received the $558 ACP Rail promised me. I read your column about another ACP case in the Boston Globe and was hoping you could help me get a refund. -- Katherine Spokes, Jamaica Plain, Mass.

A: Did you say ACP Rail had your money for almost two years? That's got to be some kind of record. In case you're just joining us, a refund should take no more than a week. The best companies can do it in a few minutes. Two years? Where's that number for Guinness?

Before I get to the resolution on your case, l want to acknowledge the many emails I've received from readers about pandemic refund cases. You are

Gen. George C. Marshall was destined to lead 7 million soldiers, the largest fighting force the world has ever known, but in the late ‘30s, he commanded a dusty post outside of Leavenworth, Kansas. He was supposed to have received command of a full battalion (500 men), However, Brinkley’s research revealed Marshall had barely enough men to cover the duties of a battalion, … “which included 200 soldiers made up primarily of cooks, and potato peelers.”

During one Army command’s 1940 field maneuvers soldiers had to sleep on the ground. They begged for ammunition to put in their 1910 caliber .303 rifles in order to protect themselves from prairie rattlesnakes. The requests were always denied. As one supply sergeant observed those old bolt-action rifles made before World War I and still in use could cause bodily harm. “Firing a (1910) round that old in a rifle that old might hurt you more than it would hurt the snake,” he would tell soldiers. Washington wasn’t without its political humor leading up to World War II. In a Congressional budget hearing a senator asked a general why the Army needed so much money for enlisted men to do household chores for the officers.

TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER

A year later, it became clear that we would not use the passes. Since they were refundable, I asked ACP for a refund. It agreed to take the tickets back, and in February 2021, I mailed the tickets back to the company.

new soldiers who had never seen a horse … no worries, most of the horses had never seen a man. The commander wasn’t concerned that that month in 1939, German panzers (tanks) had destroyed the 3,000 man and horse Polish cavalry in a matter of minutes.

“Sir, would you like to see a general in the U.S. Army out pushing his own lawn mower?”

David Brinkley

Legendary newsman David Brinkley’s 1988 non-fiction book, “Washington Goes to War” offers extraordinary details of how unprepared we were in the 1930s when Germany, Italy, and Japan were rattling swords. The famed news reporter and later NBC-TV commentator on the nightly “HuntleyBrinkley Report began detailing how antiquated equipment was in U.S. Army. If President Roosevelt had looked closely during his many inspections bases across the nation … “The president would have seen some unsettling sights. … tanks had truly horrendous designs. … there were no periscopes. … the soldier driving the tank could not see where he was going … the commander had to sit in the open (on the turret), shoulders and head exposed, resting his feet on the driver’s shoulders. To guide the vehicle the commander had to kick the driver on the left shoulder for a left turn and the right for a right-hand turn.” However, Brinkley did point out each tank was equipped with a siren.

When Col. George Patton arrived in Georgia to assume command of the 2nd Armored Division he found most of his 325 tanks were in disrepair and in desperate need of nuts and bolts to hold them together. When the Army supply department ordered them, but never arrived, Patton got out a Sears, Roebuck catalog and bought and paid for them out of his own pocket,” But, fear not, dear readers, Patton was the wealthiest man in the Army. He came from a rich Pasadena family. Roosevelt should have noticed at a Texas Army base there still was a cavalry. The commander of the post had just ordered 1,000 horses for a 1,000

“Well, sir, I’m a senator of the United States and I push my own lawn mower.”

It was 1941 when construction finally began on the Pentagon. It began once a location across the Potomac River was settled upon, which was no easy task. Roosevelt objected to earlier proposed locations because they were too close to Arlington National Cemetery. Once war was declared on Dec. 8, 1941, offices began being occupied by military personnel while construction was going on. Brinkley’s first-hand observations are a very short glimpse of what everyday life was like in Washington, D.C., during those years leading up to the War. At that time the nation’s capital was a sleepy, Southern city where things didn’t move very fast. But as the wheels of government began mobilizing for war the pace would quicken in short order.

By the end of the War, which was the greatest conflict in human history, some 16 million Americans had been in uniform and thousands of defense factory and shipbuilding workers provided vital weapons and ammunition in support. Life in our nation would never be the same. The U.S. emerged as the world leader in military power with overwhelming air power, the world’s largest navy and advanced weaponry. We’ve managed to hold on to that lofty position. It remains to be seen whether our position for the world will last. For casual readers of history I recommend “Washington Goes to War” if you can find a copy. Amazon.com still has copies available.

Letters to the Editor I can still see my uncle playing the Cont. from Page 4r bass walkdown from the one-chord to the six-chord in the first measure. And when I hear “Stardust,” I’m reminded of the time my grandfather sat on the porch of his singlewide, perched on Lake Taneycomo, singing the lyrics to the intro of Hoagy Carmichael’s anthem to love. When I hear Willie sing “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” I remember being a little boy, lying in bed, with a 102degree fever that threatened to melt my brain.

I remember my father, dressed in the all-denim uniform of a Local Number 10 ironworker, with soot on his hands. He stroked my sweatladen red hair all night long, and sang Willie songs softly between his tearful prayers for my wellbeing. When I hear “Always On My Mind,” I think of the beer joint band I played in. The wannabe cowboys. We were a decent band. And by “decent” I mean that occasionally we all played in the same key at the same time. And whenever the tune “On the Road Again” comes onto the radio, I turn it up. And I think of the woman I met nearly a quarter century ago. The brunette who thought I was interesting, and smart, and worth her time. I think of how this young woman, an aspiring math teacher, inspired a dropout to enroll in community college and to study English. I think of that old pickup truck I drove to the OWCC campus on weekends and for night classes. I think of the “achievement award” the school sent me years later when I had my first book published.

If not, it could come soon. Sooner or later, people we have known will die. What is this thing of death all about? Death is first mentioned in the Bible, when God warns Adam and Eve to not eat the fruit of a certain tree or they will die. Did these primeval people have any idea of death? To the best of our knowledge, there had not been any death in the garden. When was the first death recorded to help them experience death? It is when their son,

The New Testament says “Death is an enemy.” It brings sorrow, victory, relief, anger, and many attempts to ward it off with gimmicks, promises, and cryonics, which is to freeze the corpse with the hope of a future restoration to life. Then, of course, there is the search for the proverbial fountain of youth. No matter how we try to avoid it, the angel of death, the grim reaper, or God Himself will bring our lives to a close, when we reach that number of days “which were determined when as yet there was not one of them.” Remember to call 760 746 6611 for counsel, inspiration, and help. YOUTUBE also has a program, Richard Huls, Walking With God In The Garden.

Get involved by logging onto sdrescue.org/get-involved/volunteeropportunity and become a volunteer for SD Rescue Mission, Bread of Life, Walk With Me, Interfaith, etc. So the next time a senior asks for help we don't answer: "Just tighten your belts."

Will give plenty of notice to all who would like to participate.

And special thanks to The Paper for having U. S. military veterans (young and old) as writers & columnists. It brings tears to my eyes to see a photo of editor, publisher, owner of The Paper, Mr. Lyle E. Davis (U. S. Army) each week with the proud words: "The Paper, Owned & Operated by a U. S. Veteran!" God bless you, Mr. Davis.

Do you have any special recognition/ceremony on tap for your young writer Friedrich Gomez (USN) when he writes his 200th story?

Greetings Escondido,

As I write this article, I am going to give the State of the City at tonight’s Council meeting. Before we would hold a breakfast at the CCAE and had quite a crowd attend. With COVID, that venue went away or at least was put on pause. So tonight, will be a simpler affair.

Not everyone will have the time to attend, but it will be recorded if you want to watch it later. Just look for it on the City Website at Escondido.org. Now the format for these speeches is fairly standard. One talks about what the city has accomplished, its challenges, and the options for the future. Now I don’t have the space to give the speech here, but there are a two points that I want to make.

First, we have been a leader in addressing the homelessness problem. And while it is not solved our actions are moving us in the right direction. Granted slower than what any of us want but we are progressing.

Second, we have a serious fiscal challenge over the next two decades. What we decide as a community will determine two different futures. This is as they say a big deal. Please be informed about it and not listen to comforting platitudes, it will really impact what Escondido looks like for our children now and generations to come. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe!

the gap between generations has widened in recent years. One of the most significant influences is the acceleration of our knowledge and technology.

The Computer Factory 845 W. San Marcos Blvd 760-744-4315 thecomputerfactory.net "High Tech with High Touch

Technology, Attitudes and the Ages of Man. Part II

“Ignorance ain’t what you don’t know, it’s what you know that ain’t so.” Source unknown.

To make this ancient saying more appropriate to today’s growing generations gap we would to change “it’s what you know that aint so” to “it’s what you know that’s no longer relevant” The generation’s gap has never been more pronounced. Written history has always acknowledged the difference in the way older and younger generations perceive one another. There is universal agreement that

In 1981 Buckminster Fuller proposed the “Knowledge Doubling Curve.” In 1900, knowledge, defined as the sum total of recorded human knowledge, doubled every fifty years. By 1945 the doubling rate was estimated to be only 25 years and by 1982, every 12 years. Today thanks, mainly to the impact of the Internet, recorded human knowledge doubles each day. Obviously, as individuals, we don’t double our knowledge every day. Nearly all of the increase in recorded knowledge is incremental, esoteric and relevant only to scientists and technologists.

Eventually however, the incremental creep of new knowledge results in technological breakthroughs that significantly impact our day to day lives. As new technology replaces and obsoletes old technology, it doesn’t erase the recorded knowledge that was the basis of the old technology. It simply renders that knowledge irrelevant. You may have learned to stoke a coal furnace, iron a shirt, read a map, change a spark plug, use the phone book or bake a pie from scratch but how useful is your acquired skill today. Your grandkids may not be able to do any of these, but they don’t need to. On the other hand, they grew up in the connected universe and developed their entire

The Appraiser’s Corner

Stating the obvious, dolls have always been popular collectibles among females. Many women have saved the very dolls that they cherished when they were young, and much to their surprise-and delight-some of these dolls are now worth a small ransom. As with any collectible, scarcity and condition are two of the factors which determine value. Haven’t we heard that before?

However, doll collecting has always been, and will always be, near the top of the collectibles list. And one of the largest doll manufacturers in the United States, The Vogue Doll Shoppe, started in 1922. In 1951, Vogue made it big with the introduction of the Ginny doll. The Ginny doll has remained a doll phenomenon to this day. She was first promoted as a “Wavette Hair Doll”, but the advertising flier that was sent to all the buyers was signed “Ginny”, and the name stuck.

The dolls themselves looked alike except for their hair and eye colors, and hair-dos. Also, they all stood 8 inches tall. However, it was the clothing that made these Ginny dolls so interesting. Jennie Graves was the founder of the Vogue Company, and insisted that the clothing on the dolls be of major importance.

“Ginny” was dressed like typical American children, and more that 100 outfits were designed and offered for sale each year. Local women were hired, and it was even said nearly

1000 women sewed for the company. There have been several Ginny series, including the Debutante series, the Tiny Miss series, the Bridal series, the Kindergarten series, the Brother-Sister series, and the Square Dancer series.

social world around it. You probably don’t even understand their acronym and emoji laced Internet language.

That being said, most seniors really do still want to be a part of the lives of their children and grandchildren. Internet based applications like Skype, Zoom texting and Email certainly facilitate near and long distance relationships providing nearly instant access among family members. There is one disruptive influence in America today. Political positions often involve highly emotional negative feelings regarding opposing political figures. These feelings are deep seated, logic tight and totally beyond the influence of relatives or close friends. Don’t allow opposing political views to disrupt the natural loving relationship between you and your family. Either agree to avoid politically sensitive topics, agree to disagree or just clam up when politics pop up in conversation. It may be difficult to remain silent but it’s certainly worth it to keep peace in your loving family.

If you have an opportunity look at some Ginny dolls, and see for yourself if they were not symbolic of what the United States was like a half century ago. Memories and collecting, joined at the hip.

Travel Troubleshooter Cont. from Page 7

Because technology moved at a much slower pace a half century ago, granny and grandpa actually had useful skills. Granny was a great cook and knew how to use the sewing machine and grandpa kept the lawn mower purring like a kitten. Families stayed closer because the elders were an important family asset. Not so much today. Mobility has scattered families far and wide. A three or four generation household is a pretty rare find these days. It’s not all bad though. Today’s seniors are healthier, more affluent and more independent. They tend to depend less on their children and most have active social lives within their own communities.

As many collectors might remember, in 1954 many of the Ginny dolls were made to walk. In that same year several accessories were developed. Ginny now had a pup named Sparky. Freddie the Fish came into existence, and pink furniture with Ginny’s name on it was made. In 1956 the Ginny Doll Club was started, and one of the most valuable of all Ginnys, the clown, came on the market.

By 1957, Ginny had become the best selling doll in America, and wouldn’t you know it, she now had a big sister Jill (who was actually two inches taller than lil’ sister Ginny). She had become big time, and even had her own gym and storybook, “Ginny’s First Secret”. In 1958, Jill’s friend Jan joined the company. A serious Ginny doll collector was now having a hard time keeping up with all of the new characters and variations.

Vogue was on top of the doll world. But as we all know, that would soon change with the introduction of Barbie by Mattel.

Ginny dolls are still popular, and as colorful and unique as ever. And for those collectors who remember collecting dolls themselves the Ginny dolls by Vogue holds special memories.

You were way too patient with your online agency and Britrail. I list the Britrail executive contacts on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. I would have reached out to them -politely -- and asked them for a refund. Alternatively, you could have contacted your credit card issuer to see if they would allow you to dispute the charge. A good credit card company would have fought for you to receive a prompt refund. A written promise to return the money would be viewed as a credit memo by some credit card dispute departments and you would have received your money quickly.

I don't know why it took ACP Rail so long. It looks as if your Britrail passes were refundable. You had 11 months from the date of issue to request a full refund, unless your travel agent specified other terms, which it didn't. You were within the refund window. Maybe ACP's offices were closed for a while during the initial outbreak, but it was still accepting reservations, which means it was still in business. I contacted ACP Rail on your behalf. A representative responded that it had "already" issued your refund, suggesting that it would have returned your money without me asking. The next day, the money landed in your account. Whatever. I'm just glad you have your refund, finally.

At the end of the semester, the boy has a problem. When he gets home, his father will find out that the dog can neither talk nor read. And he can't decide what to do about it. When he gets home, his father is all excited. "Where's Fido? I just can't wait to hear him talk and listen to him read something!"

"Dad," the boy says, "I have some grim news. This morning when I got out of the shower, Fido was in the living room kicked back in the recliner reading the morning paper, like he usually does. Then he turned to me and asked, "So, is your dad still messing' around with that little redhead who lives on Oak Street?' "The father yells, "Oh, shit! I hope you SHOT that son-of-a-bitch!"
