All of North San Diego County will be totally surprised when Escondido Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara holds a Press Conference today, Thursday, April 1st, at 12 noon, at which time he will make a startling announcement.

The Paper has learned exclusively that Mayor Mac will announce that he has put together a coalition of financial heavy hitters that will contribute to the surpise of the year and arrange for the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, to be completely dismantled, shipped to San Diego, then trucked to Escondido where it will be reconstructed and occupy the space that the long discussed and very controversial proposed Minor League Baseball Stadium was to have been built.

Mayor Mac told us in a private interview that he has been working on this operation for the past year. “The site for the earlier proposed baseball stadium was is an ideal location for this - bringing the Eiffel Tower to Escondido. This will draw tourists from all over the world and will greatly benefit not only Escondido but all North County cities as they will enjoy the overflow crowds, the attention, and, frankly, the dollars they bring to the hard hit market.”

Ticket sales of $25 per adult, $15 per minor, will all go to the Investor Group until the $100 million is repaid, together with 12% return on investment. •••• I urgently needed a few days off work, but I knew the boss would not allow me to take leave. I thought that maybe if I acted "Crazy" then he would tell me to take a few days off. So, I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises.

My co-worker (who's blonde) asked me what I was doing.

I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb, So, that the Boss might think I was "Crazy" and give me a few days off.

A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked, "What in the name of good GOD are you doing?"

I told him I was a light bulb.

He said, "You are clearly stressed out. Go home and recuperate for a couple of days."

I jumped down and walked out of the office...

When my co-worker (the blonde) followed me, the Boss asked her, "... And where do you think you're going?!"

History Museum Reopening With Limits - The Valley Center History Museum, which has been closed for the past year due to the pandemic, has announced a limited reopening plan effective April 1.

Arrest Made in Fatal Traffic Colllission

On 02-12-21, a white Ford Explorer driven by a 13 year-old girl and her juvenile companion fled from the police after a traffic stop. The girl lost control of her vehicle while making a left turn from eastbound Mission Ave to northbound Ash St. The Explorer slid into the bushes killing two men who were sleeping next to a block wall. The driver was quickly detained by officers after running away from the scene. The two men were identified as Mateo Salvador (33) and Sofio Sotelo Torres (51).

Since the tragic event took place, traffic investigators have been working diligently to locate and process evidence, finalize statements from involved parties and witnesses, and attempt to re-create the circumstances surrounding the crash. During this time, our investigators have been in communication with the Juvenile Branch of the San Diego County District Attorney’s office on the filing of all possible charges. Investigators prepared an affidavit for an arrest warrant for the 13-year-old driver and the warrant was issued by the court.

On 03-25-21, Escondido Police investigators took the driver into custody on the arrest warrant. She was later booked into Juvenile Hall on 2 counts of PC 192(c)(1) Vehicular Manslaughter, and 1 count each of CVC 2800.3 Evading Police Causing Injury or Death,

Recent events have given me pause to reflect a bit on my own situation and perhaps to take a few minutes to acknowledge an important area of my life . . . and to do so before I check out of this world. That important area is . .

Evelyn.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why she is so good to me, but she sure is. I've gotten kinda spoiled, thanks to her.

I've said many times that I'm alive today only because of Evelyn. When we first became a couple I ate too much, and the wrong kind of foods; drank too much . . . two, three glasses of wine of an evening . . . and I had all kinds of tummy problems. I was a mess. I didn't know at the time that I was a diabetic. Even before I learned that, Evelyn had begun turning my life around. For the better.

Evelyn changed my diet. She and I seldom drink. At most, a glass of wine or

Oceanside Police Make Arrest for Murder, Child Endangerment

On November 15, 2020, at approximately 6:58 a.m., Officers from the Oceanside Police Department responded to a radio call to cover the Oceanside Fire Department for a newborn baby who was not breathing in a residence in the 300 block of Canyonside Way. Officers and Paramedics arrived on scene and began providing CPR to the a glass of beer. She seldom drinks even that. She pampered me . . . still does.

When we first became a couple it was breakfast in bed . . . she still brings my breakfast to me . . . but it's usually in my office . . . where I practically always hang out. She washes my clothes, irons them, stows them away, tries to teach me to pick up after myself (probably a lost cause . . -. but I might be learning. Slowly.) The tummy problems are gone . . . I'm as healthy as an older diabetic can be . . . (though she watches me like a mother hen, reminding me I ought not to be eating this or that . . . but she doesn't push it. She knows I'm a big boy and can make my own decisions. Dumb as they might be).

She's also a strong woman. I remember when I accompanied her to the doctor and he confirmed to her she had breast cancer. She let out a brief, very brief, cry . . . and then choked back her tears and met the challenge head on. She went through two lumpectomies, and radiation, and now, after about 21 years, it's clear that she has beaten breast cancer. Never once did I hear her complain.

I remember also several occasions when something in the home had gone wrong. She just met those problems head on as well. No nonsense. Let's just deal with it and get it done.

I'm not the easiest guy to live with. I'm a bull-headed, stubborn Norwegian with a temper. I've managed to pretty much learn to control my temper. But I'm still bull headed and stubborn. That probably will never go away. It's why Norwegians became Vikings.

I try to figure out why Evelyn puts up with me and takes such good care of

newborn baby. The newborn baby was subsequently transported to a local area hospital and later pronounced deceased.

Detectives from the Oceanside Police Department Crimes of Violence Unit responded and began conducting a follow-up investigation into this incident. Based on the information received from the follow-up investigation and the autopsy results; the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office was consulted and it was determined that charges of Murder and Child Endangerment should be brought against the mother of the child, Kelsey Carpenter (31 year old Oceanside Resident).

On March 23, 2021 Detectives from the Oceanside Police Department Crimes of Violence Unit arrested Carpenter and booked her in the Vista Detention Facility on the aforementioned charges.

But I get it. Plenty of effort, dedication, care and comfort. When I've been sick, she's been right there, by my side. Kidney stones, gall bladder, shingles . . . you name it . . . she's been there. If I come down with a cold she fusses about me and ensures I always have a hot cup of tea or cup of soup available. She would have made a fantastic nurse.

She not only looks after me but she does great things for her community.

She was, for many years, a very active member of our Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club, two-time president, Distinguished Lieutenant Governor, always attending meetings and conferences (which bore me to tears) and always first in line to volunteer; she was the president of the Escondido Women's Club, very active in her sorority, and she's a big ol' softie when it comes to puppies and cats (we have four cats and two puppies). Besides all of this she writers her weekly column, keeps the books for The Paper, keeps the office neatly organized (except for my desk, which she avoids like the plague it is) answers the phone (I always prefer her to handle problem calls. She has more patience than me.

She handled a call yesterday, dealing with a guy whose credit card kept getting declined. She called him to get the issue resolved, he gave her a lot of static. She kept her cool and was Ms. Congeniality and Madame Diplomat. I would have blown my top and probably called the guy every name in the book. (Remember that Norwegian temper?) She handled it like a pro.

Which she is.

Together, we seem to make a pretty nice couple. We both have a comfort-

able stature within the business, professional and social community. We're both well known and respected and have connections with important people in town. They seem to admire and respect us as much as we admire and respect them.

People have told us we are an attractive couple. (Though most mornings, when we are both at our vanities, brushing our teeth, combing our hair, I tell her . . . 'I'm gonna be prettier than you today." To which she casually replies . . . "Good.")

We laugh a lot in our home. She makes me laugh. I make her laugh. The puppies, in particular, keep us both in stitches.

I know she sometimes get frustrated with me . . . seldom do I get frustrated with her. I appreciate her . . . but probably don't tell her often enough, or show her often enough, how much I appreciate her. We Vikings are so often busily engaged in planning our next raid that we sometimes forget to stop and tell our special lady how important she is to us.

I'm a rather lucky fella. I've always had some special women in my life, all of whom have treated me kindly . . . but Evelyn is number 1. There's just no one like her.

So here's to you, kiddo. If I keel over tomorrow . . . it's been a great ride and you made my life worth living. It's been a great 25 years.

I don't tell you often enough . . . but you are very, very special to me.

How do you get Acura to honor its powertrain warranty?

What's wrong with Robin Hogue's Acura TLX? And why won't Acura cover her warranty repairs?

Q: Two years ago, I bought a 2018 Acura TLX from an Acura dealership located in northwestern Indiana. Unfortunately, since purchasing this vehicle, I have encountered a couple of mechanical issues.

The most recent is a sudden break of a connecting rod.

The French Cultural Minister, Monsieur Charles Clouseau de Toqueville, said: “Naturally, we hate to see a great French institution, the international symbol of French culture, leave our shores. But Mayor Mac is very persuasive. We know this beautiful tower will spread the story of France even more, coming to America.

In the space where the Eiffel Tower has been for all these years, we will be building a huge athletic stadium which will host international tennis matches, international soccer tournaments . . . a wonderful arena for athletic endeavors.

We have been in negotiations with The Moorad Group, who were introduced to us by Mayor Mac. They are giving us an opportunity to invest $80 milllion of our money in a stadium in the heart of France, which they will manage for us and not charge us one centime in management fees, and they tell us this stadium will bring us hundreds of thousands of tourists to France.

We are happy to invest in the Moorad Group and their vision for an even greater France! Vive la France! Vive la Moorad Group in France!”

It happened while I was driving to the airport. I heard a loud sound and discovered that the RPMs had fallen to zero and that the car was rapidly losing acceleration.

I was towed to my dealership. A representative said Acura would cover my repairs under my warranty. The dealership gave me a loaner car. But a few days later, the dealership called and reversed its position. They said it would cost $10,222 to repair the vehicle. A representative told me to immediately return the loaner vehicle because Acura would stop paying for it. I did.

I'm now left with a monthly payment on an undrivable Acura, with a valid powertrain warranty. The repairs that were once guaranteed are now my responsibility. Is there anything you can do? -- Robin Hogue, Chesterton, Ind. A: What a mess. Acura should have honored your warranty and repaired your car. Instead, it looks like it had no idea what to do and then left you holding a bag of bolts.

Your pre-owned Acura came with a limited powertrain warranty of seven years or 100,000 miles. But there were some critical exclusions, all of which it spells out in its <a href="https://www.acura.com/content/pdf/9075-acpvwarrantybooklet_final_5.25.11.pdf>warranty booklet</a>.

I see that you appealed your case to the dealership and directly <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/honda/">to the manufacturer</a>, with limited success.

They insisted that your damage wasn't covered under the warranty.

But why?

I contacted Acura to find out. The company claims the damage was caused by what it termed "misuse/abuse." And it turns out there's an exclusion for that in your warranty. ("Additional limitations include, but are not limited to, circumstances such as misuse, abuse, noncompliance with warranty policies, lack of proper maintenance and acts of Nature.")

I don't know how you can abuse an Acura until you break a connecting rod in the engine. I'm a consumer advocate, not an automotive

reporter.

Acura says you took your case to nonbinding arbitration, which found in its favor. Unfortunately, the only option you have now is to take Acura to court. If you were driving the car normally before it broke, you should have no problem winning.

Help! Lufthansa canceled our tickets but kept our money

When Lufthansa cancels part of Po Yee Fan's flight from San Francisco to Tirana, Albania, she tries to get a refund for the new ticket. Why won't the airline help her?

Q: Before the pandemic, my husband, my two friends, and I, were supposed to join a Gate 1 tour in Albania. Gate 1 booked us a Lufthansa flight, which consisted of three legs from San Francisco to Tirana via Amsterdam and Frankfurt. When we checked in at the gate in Amsterdam for the flight to Frankfurt, a Lufthansa representative told us that our reservation had been canceled. The agent at the boarding gate didn't give us a reason for the cancellation. We had to buy a new ticket to get to Tirana.

But there's also a time to get on the phone, and that time was when you were in Amsterdam and didn't have a ticket to continue to Frankfurt. I would have exhausted every possibility, including calling Gate 1, Lufthansa and United before buying a new ticket. Getting money from an airline is almost impossible.

But not entirely impossible. I contacted all three on your behalf. After several weeks, United sent you a refund for the new flight.

When we returned, we sent an email to Lufthansa, requesting a refund for the ticket we had to buy.

Lufthansa denied our request. It also rejected our appeal.

That's not possible since you were traveling as a group, and your two friends boarded the plane as scheduled. AG Day in California

This year California observed AG Day on March 22nd; a day we celebrate our state's unique contributions to the nation’s food supply. It’s also an opportunity for me to remind legislators from north of the Tehachapi Mountains that our region helps make California the country’s leading agricultural state.

Agriculture is a major contributor to our economy. According to the 2019 Crop Report, California’s agricultural output generated $50 billion, with exports totaling $21.7 billion. Top commodities for export included almonds, pistachios, walnuts, dairy and dairy products, and of course, wine.

Our local contributions to this bounty are huge. In Riverside County, more than 200,000 acres are devoted to agriculture, producing about 120 different commodities including vegetables, flowers, milk and eggs. Nursery stock, milk and table grapes are the top three producers, each valued at over $100 million. Temecula Valley winegrowers are recognized around the nation. Don’t forget avocados, many grown in De Luz, just west of Temecula. Avocados rank 10th in total production value for Riverside County.

San Diego County’s agriculture, much of it centered in the 75th Assembly District, is extremely diverse, including nursery crops, citrus, avocados and our growing wine industry. According to the San Diego County Farm Bureau, our agricultural production ranks 19th out of over 3,000 counties nationwide. We’re first for nursery crops and avocados (producing 40% of California’s crop), second in acres of guavas, pomegranates, limes and macadamias, fifth in lemons, ninth in strawberries, tenth in egg laying hens. We also rank first nationally in part-time farmers and second in farms operated by women.

Since agriculture is so vital to our state and regional economies, I joined the Bipartisan Rural Caucus, a group of legislators working to achieve consensus on issues facing California’s rural/agricultural areas.

Helping Those at the Convention Center

Over the last couple weeks, we’ve started to see heartbreaking photos coming from our southern border.

Families and unaccompanied minors, shoulder to shoulder, stuck in limbo hoping to get to the United States. This crisis hit home last Tuesday, as it was announced that the San Diego County Convention Center would temporarily house over a thousand unaccompanied minors, seeking asylum in the United States.

Over the past few months, the crisis at the border has been worsened by new policies at the federal level.

Nonetheless, it is heartbreaking to see the new images circulating, especially for the unaccompanied children. While I’m supportive of helping those in need, the County of San Diego, once again, is forced to step up and put a band-aid on a much more severe problem and the federal government needs to find a solution.

I will closely monitor to make sure the federal government covers all costs associated with these efforts.

This should not come at the expense of local San Diego County tax dollars. It’s also a priority that these

efforts don’t take away from COVID-19 response vaccination and healthcare efforts for our region. And, I will advocate strongly for protection of the safety and health of San Diegans from the influx of people crossing the border.

I am very concerned for the public health of greater San Diego, by allowing thousands into our region during a pandemic. We still have too many San Diegans unemployed and a large homeless population that needs our help. We need to stay focused on the region’s pressing issues, and not get sidetracked dealing with the failings of the federal government.

Soroptimists Award $21,500 in Scholarship Grants to 7 Local Women Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland (SI Vista NCI) recently gave educational awards totalling $21,500 to seven local women as part of its Live Your Dream Awards program. The Live Your Dream awards assist women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

These women are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program.

Awardees may use the money in whatever manner will help them further their goals, whether that be tuition, supplies, rent, childcare or other living expenses.

In the past five years, SI Vista NCI has given over $30,000 to awardees. This year's first-place award winner received a check for $3,500, and the other six awardees received $3,000 apiece. The top winner’s application has been submitted as a candidate for an additional region-level award and a chance to become a candidate for one of three $10,000 Soroptimist federation-level awards. “We usually present these awards at our

annual awards gala, but due to the pandemic all in-person events have been canceled and we simply mailed the checks and awards certificates to the women” said Eden Weinberger, chair of the Live Your Dream Awards Committee. “We hope to celebrate with them via Zoom soon,” she said.

First-place awardee Kasey Critz’s dream is to earn a master’s degree in special education and work as an advocate for learning disabled students. She has been pursuing a B.A. in education at National University, maintaining a 3.23 GPA and receiving many student achievement awards plus admission to their prestigious Honors for Social Change program. Critz escaped a physically abusive marriage and was left as the sole financial support for four learning disabled sons. She calls the day she enrolled in National University a day of reckoning. “It was time to return to school so I would never again be in a position that left me and my sons powerless,” she wrote in her application. “The Live Your Dream Scholarship would give me a chance to breathe when I am wondering how I am going to squeeze 30 hours of work, homework and parenting into a 24-hour day… many times I thought that I should take a temporary leave from school and focus on making more money because it was so difficult to succeed at both … I don't always have a homemade dinner on the table or have all the laundry folded and put away. My assignments aren’t always turned in on time, and sometimes I fall asleep at work because I work the overnight shift as an emergency veterinary nurse.

Many times, I just have a good oldfashioned cry to get myself to the next day. Somehow, with the grace of God, I always find a way to make it work, but now I don't have to figure out how to hide the bruises behind sunglasses, make-up and sweaters,” she wrote.

All six other awardees have similarly poignant stories and struggles.

Monica Vargas, single mother of three, is pursuing a B.A. in Psychology from Cal State University San Marcos part-time while holding down a full-time job.

“Not only would this scholarship assist me financially by offsetting some of the extra expenses a student endures such as books, fees, supplies etc., but it would also provide me the continued motivation to keep moving forward in accomplishing my educational goals,” she wrote in her application. The other five awardees are enrolled in local colleges, universities or trade schools. One is studying Criminal Justice, three are seeking degrees in medical fields, and one is getting certified in cosmetology. All are single moms living in North County San Diego. The Second Amendment: Not So Easily Changed

For those of you who are easily bored or only slightly interested, as U.S. citizens, here’s a quick primer you should know on the basics of gun ownership rights -- in less than 800 words.

For the latter part of the 20th century, and all 21 years of this century there has been much heated rhetoric and debate tossed around about doing away with or changing the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, a passage which gives us our right to keep and bear arms. There’s little chance of that happening because there have been more than 10,000 attempts to change or alter the Constitution. Only 27 attempts have been successful.

How many of you have bothered to dissect and digest what those few words of our “Bill of Rights” really mean?

The Bill of Rights are the first 10 Amendments to our Constitution – the second of which is the “bear arms” passage. The 10 Amendments guarantees us our individual civil rights and liberties such as freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly, the right to fair legal procedure and to bear arms. The Bill of Rights sets rules for due process of law and reserves all powers not delegated to the Federal Government to the people or the states. They also give us freedom from excessive bail, cruel and unusual punishments.

Regarding the right to keep and bear arms, the following pretty much sums up the situation: The Second (of the 10) Bill of Rights Amendments protects the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. It has been the law since ratification on Dec. 15, 1791, along with the other nine articles of the Bill of Rights. In the decision of the District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Supreme Court affirmed for the first time the right to keep and bear arms belongs to individuals for selfdefense in the home. The court concluded that right is not unlimited and does not preclude the existence of certain long-standing prohibitions such as those forbidding "the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill," or restrictions on "… the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons,” (assault rifles?)

In the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision of “McDonald v. City of Chicago,” the court ruled state and local governments are limited to the same extent as the federal government from infringing upon this right.

In other words, no city or state can go off on its own and adopt a law superseding the Second Amendment.

The premise on the right to keep and

bear arms goes back to the 17th century. Our Second Amendment is based partially on the right to keep and bear arms in English common law and was influenced by the English Bill of Rights of 1689.

The most influential framer of the Constitution was James Madison. In Federalist paper No. 46, he contrasted the federal government of the United States to the European kingdoms of that time, which Madison described as "afraid to trust the people with arms,” and assured "the existence of subordinate governments ... forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition.”

In United States v. Cruikshank (1876), the Supreme Court ruled "The right to bear arms is not granted by the Constitution; neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence.” The Second Amendment means no more than it shall not be infringed by Congress, and has no other effect than to restrict the powers of the federal government."

In 2016, the Supreme Court reiterated its earlier rulings that "the Second Amendment extends, ‘prima facie,’ (accepted as correct until proven otherwise) all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those not in existence at the time of the founding" and that its protection is not limited to "only those weapons useful in warfare.”

Within the last 20 years the Second Amendment has been subjected to renewed academic inquiry and judicial interest. The Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision that held the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to keep a gun for self-defense. This was the first time the Court ruled the Second Amendment guarantees an individual's right to “own” a gun. The key word here is “own.” Nothing in the Second Amendment prohibits the government from putting a tax or license fee on said weapon(s).

Consider this: not all of the millions of gun owners across our nation are conservative “right-wingers.” There are more than a few so-called liberal “left-wingers” who possess a gun for myriad of reasons, hence there will be no end to the argument between individuals and various organizations regarding gun control and gun rights – Congress included. It is a passionate debate that probably will never be solved or agreed upon.

Most amazing is what has been purported to exceed all of them and that which much of the world recognizes this month – no, not April Fools Day, no, not Easter bunnies or chickens that lay colored eggs, and, no, not even the new clothes some will sport if they can get out to show them off in spite of Covid 19, but rather, a claim of historical and spiritual importance – the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, the Messiah of God. That event has brought hope to millions of people, who refuse to believe that the grave is the victor, that death is no longer the enemy, that God cares for His creation enough to amaze us with an empty tomb, with victory over the insanity of cruelty and injustice in crucifying an innocent person, thinking they were the masters, only to learn they were the losers.

Is it only a story, a fabrication of some misguided followers, or is it an amazing event of truth? It is amazing that we have an opportunity to believe it or to reject it.

Safe, Virtual and Fun Activities for Seniors

While the Senior Activity Center in San Marcos remains closed due to COVID-19 safety measures, the City is offering fun activities for seniors to participate in from home. From 9-10 a.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month, seniors are welcome to participate in our Puzzle and Book Drive-Up Exchange located at the entrance of the Senior Activity Center. Participants can borrow puzzles or books, then return them for different items at the following exchange.

The City also offers FREE Virtual Bingo on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month via Zoom. Interested? Email the Recreation Supervisor at joverman@san-marcos.net to receive a Zoom invitation. I was reading the National Geographic magazine on a long flight recently. I was returning from my daughter’s wedding out of state. The magazine theme was exploring one’s personality. I found it interesting, and it had several self-tests. One was called, Your Ideal Headstone, that I think is worth sharing. Thomas Jefferson according to his own instructions put, “Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, Author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom, And Father of the University of Virginia.” What was left out of course was President of the USA. He listed the accomplishments that made him the proudest. So, as you can imagine they asked what would you put on your own which I am still thinking about. But it also made me think what are the three things that make us proudest about our city. I came up with more than three, which I felt good about. How about you?

What is it that makes us so darn good at what we do? I used to think that was my years of experience in the computer industry. After all, I’m no doubt the most experienced active person in the entire computer industry. “One hit wonders” like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates aren’t qualified to carry my lunch bucket.

Heck I was running computer simulations while they were busy filling their diapers.

It all started in 1965 when, as an engineer at Belden Wire and Cable in Richmond Indiana, I was invited to develop some wire mill formulas on the “Johnniac” super computer at

Rand Corp in Santa Monica, CA. After working with Johnniac, I went back to Indiana and started a computer curriculum at the Indiana University extension in my home town. By 1969 I was developing mainframe configuration algorithms at Systems Engineering Laboratories in Ft Lauderdale. At Westinghouse in the early 1970s I trained corporate management and Division engineers in the use of computer simulations to solve manufacturing problems. By the mid 1970s I was running an NCR manufacturing Division making computer peripherals for the banking industry. In 1979 NCR sent me to the “Silicon Valley” to rescue their multiplant Micrographics Systems Div. In 1981 I became Operations VP at Megatek, a San Diego Division of United Telecom making computer powered workstations. In 1987 I was hired as the “start-up” VP of Operations for Packard Bell in LA. PB would eventually, for a short time, become the number one PC producer in the World. My last real job was VP of Operations for Vision Technologies, a PC manufacturer in Vista. We sold VT to an Asian Conglomerate and opened The Computer Factory in 1995.

While my resume, combined with my advanced age, strongly supports my claim to be the most experienced person still active in the computer industry, unfortunately, it has little to do with Computer Factory’s success. If I’d spent fifty-five years as a butcher, plumber, farmer, veterinarian, cowboy or even an elephant trainer, I would have had the kind of career that builds on previous knowledge year after year. The smartest plumber in the world is probably the one

‘who’s been doing it the longest.

With computers it’s entirely different. Almost nothing you do or use on your computer or smart phone today even existed ten years ago. So what’s the value of all my technical knowhow accumulated over a 55 year career? In the immortal words of Ranzel Anderson, my late mother- inlaw and a veritable font of down home Kentucky wisdom, “It ain’t worth a pewter fido”

So if my extensive background in the computer industry isn’t the key to our success and longevity, what is? One factor is that we’ve always thought of our business as an end in itself and not as a vehicle to “bigger things”.

With Twenty-five years at Bent Ave and San Marcos Blvd we’ve become pretty good solving customer problems and we’ve always been blessed

with excellent technicians. “Derek the Great” our senior tech for the past six years is the best ever. Derek is our go-to guy for questions involving the latest applications and technology.

Gaming, video editing, crypto currency or the “dark Web” it doesn’t matter, Derek knows it. Knowing is one thing but being able to communicate is another. Over the years Derek at 26, has developed communication skills far beyond his years. Business owners, gamers and grannies all find him easy, informative and trustworthy.

Over the past twenty five years many factors have contributed to The Computer Factory’s continued relevance and success but if there is a single most important factor today, I believe that it is none other than “Derek the Great”
