coach like Wooden, quiet as an April snow and square as a game of checkers; loyal to one woman, one school, one way; walking around campus in his sensible shoes and Jimmy Stewart morals.

He'd spend a half hour the first day of practice teaching his men how to put on a sock. "Wrinkles can lead to blisters," he'd warn. These huge players would sneak looks at one another and roll their eyes. Eventually, they'd do it right. "Good," he'd say. "And now for the other foot." Of the 180 players who played for him, Wooden knows the whereabouts of 172. Of course, it's not hard when most of them call, checking on his health, secretly hoping to hear some of his simple life lessons so that they can write them on the lunch bags of their kids, who will roll their eyes.

"Discipline yourself, and others won't need to," Coach would say. "Never lie, never cheat, never steal," and "Earn the right to be proud and confident." If you played for him, you played by his rules: Never score without acknowledging a teammate. One word of profanity, and you're done for the day. Treat your opponent with respect.

No UCLA basketball number was retired under his watch. "What about the fellows who wore that number before? Didn't they contribute to the team?" he'd say. No long hair, no facial hair. "They take too long to dry, and you could catch cold leaving the gym," he'd say. That one drove his players bonkers.

One day, All-America center Bill Walton showed up with a full beard. "It's my right," he insisted. Wooden asked if he believed that strongly. Walton said he did. "That's good, Bill," Coach said. "I admire people who have strong beliefs and stick by them, I really do. We're going to miss you." Walton shaved it right then and there. Now Walton calls once a week to tell Coach he loves him. It's always too soon when you have to leave the condo and go back out into the real world, where the rules are so much grayer and the teams so much worse. As Wooden shows you to the door, you take one last look around. The framed report cards of his greatgrandkids, the boxes of jellybeans peeking out from under the favorite wooden chair, the dozens of pic“No,” I answered.

The above column appeared in the March 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated. Rick Reilly is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, and has been voted National Sportswriter of the Year eight times. This is the type of adulation, an almost reverential feeling of admiration for John Wooden. While I’m not a big fan of basketball I’m a big fan of great people people who are not only wise, but kind, considerate, well disciplined. That’s John Wooden.

I had a good friend (since deceased) who was a professional screenwriter in the Los Angeles area. His name was Mel Sherer. He has written many screen plays, comedy routines, and pilots. When he heard we were going to do a profile on John Wooden, he wrote:

“I was lucky enough to know and talk with Coach Wooden back when

popular myths about sexuality."

"Well," she explained, "one popular myth is that AfricanAmerican men are the most well-endowed of all men, when in fact it is the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait. Another popular myth is that Frenchmen are the best lovers, when actually it is men of Jewish descent who are the best. I have also discovered that the lover with absolutely the best stamina is the Southern Redneck." Suddenly the woman became a little uncomfortable and blushed. "I'm sorry," she said, "I shouldn't really be discussing all of this with you. I don't even know your name."

"Tonto," the man said, "Tonto Goldstein, but my friends call me Bubba." •••• City Of Chicago To Modernize Outdated Graft Programs. •••• A woman diagnosed as having a brain tumor was told by her doctor that she would need the transplant of a one-pound brain. The doctor then asked, "What type of brain do you want?"

I was at UCLA. I was on the track and football teams, so I always was in the Men's Gym, which was the facility we had at the time for our conditioning, etc. I'd see Coach on the stairs or in the locker room or just walking on campus and I'd say "hi." He'd always stop and chat. He did that with everyone he knew, I guess, if he had a few moments. I'd want to talk basketball. He'd ask me about how my classes were going. Many years later ... I think about 25 or so, my friends and I organized a reunion of many of the guys from our dormitory floor at school. We invited Coach Wooden to attend. To our absolute surprise and overwhelming delight, he accepted. We spent the entire afternoon talking with him over lunch, about his life (Nell had died), his theories, what he felt was important. He wanted to know about us. What a great man he is. What a truly great man. He'd be the last to say it, of course. If you're looking for a hero to pattern yourself after, look no farther than Coach (I mean Teacher) John R. Wooden. In my life, when faced with a difficult situation, I just think: What would Coach Wooden do? I'm not kidding. If you ever, and I hope you do, have a chance to talk to the man, please do it. You'll understand how his teachings and the way he lives his life are so inspirational to those who know him. Without a doubt, he is the greatest person I

And that’s how people feel about this inspirational man. President George W. Bush thinks rather highly of John Wooden as well. He awarded Wooden the 2003 Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House July 23rd, 2003. If he never coached one game of basketball in his life, John Wooden would still be a very, very special man.

But, fortunately for the sports world, he did coach a game or two. Quite a few in fact.

John Wooden is the only person to be inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. Coach Wooden ended his coaching career of 40 seasons retiring in 1975 with 885 wins and only 203 losses.

No additional paperwork is required; this increase will occur automatically. 2. Anyone currently on CalFresh with renewal/recertification due in March, April, or May, paperwork schedule will be shifted. 6 month renewal (SAR7) will be skipped during these 3 months. 12 month recertification (Recert) during these 3 months will be pushed back 6 months (i.e. Oct for those regularly due in April). An excellent play maker and aggressive defender, Wooden was a three-time Helms Athletic Foundation All-American and named College Player of the Year in 1932, the year he and fellow Hall of Famer Charles "Stretch" Murphy led Purdue to the national championship. Wooden, who cites Ward Lambert, his Purdue coach, as being his greatest coaching influence, enjoyed a brief but successful semi-pro career before turning his complete attention to coaching.

Although he would not win his first national title until 15 years later, Wooden began laying the groundwork for what would become the dynasty of all dynasties. He believed in lengthy practices for conditioning and endless drills to perfect fundamental skills.

Considered one of the finest teachers the game has ever seen, Wooden's approach rested on the idea that basketball is a game of threes: forward, guard, center; shoot, drive, pass; ball, you, man; conditioning, skill, teamwork. The latter was taught by coach Lambert at Purdue and forms the three blocks at the core of Wooden's own Pyramid of Success. The Pyramid is a well-known by-product of the Wooden coaching era. The principles outlined in it form the basis of Wooden's outlook on life and explain much of his success on and off the court. His ability to instill these principles upon his players made Wooden a master of developing talent. His premier players included All-Americans Walt Hazzard, Gail Goodrich, Lew Alcindor, Lucius Allen, Mike Warren, Sidney Wicks, Curtis Rowe, Henry Bibby, Bill Walton, Keith Wilkes, Richard Washington and Dave Meyers. On Saturday, March 28th, 2020, a female victim reported to the Escondido Police Department she had been sexually assaulted by her physician, Dr. Leng Thai Ky, a 40 year old anesthesiologist from Poway, while she was unconscious.

evening of March 30th, 2020 for the following charges:

Oral Copulation – Oral copulation with a drugged victim Oral Copulation – Oral copulation with an unconscious victim Sexual penetration with an unconscious victim Sexual penetration, victim unable to resist due to anesthetic substance Sexual Battery Assault with a Deadly Weapon Giving drugs to Aid in a felony Ky has been a doctor for over eight years. Ky has associations with Palomar Hospital, North County Pain Institute, Sharp Community Medical Group, Graybill Medical Group, and the Desert Pain Clinic in Rancho Mirage.

EPD detectives investigated the case throughout the weekend, gathering further evidence of the assault, and developed probable cause to arrest Ky. On Monday morning, March 30th, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force, Ky was taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing. I've decided to focus at least 20% of my daily activities on inventing a time-travel machine. Once perfected, I'd like to go back to when I was about 35 years old (retaining, of course, all of the vast knowledge I have since accumulated over the ages), and about 50 lbs lighter. (I have zero interest in going back to when I was 18 or so).

I would incorporate the ability to be visible or invisible, my option, so that I could, for example, go back to the time of Hitler and, while invisible, hit him in the face with an axe. Goering, too. And Eichmann. I would go back to the time of Ghengis Khan and ask that he try to be a little nicer and more considerate of his fellow man.

I would also go back and visit some of my old girl friends. Never really had a bad relationship with a woman . . . we always parted best of friends. Some, however, I never got to tell how much they meant to me and how it was important to me that they were part of my life. I would like to do that. Might not mean a whole lot to them. It would to me.

I would probably spend even more time with my two sons. We had a good father/sons relationship . . . but I could have done even better. I probably should have encouraged them more. Who knows what they might have accomplished? I would go back and listen in on all of the war planning activities . . . on the plans for the Normandy Invasion . . . on the discussions when Harry Truman decided to drop the ABomb.

So many things I would like to do . . . if only I could hurry up and finish this here invention. I know! I'll buy a couple bottles of wine and a case of beer and we can all get together this weekend and work on the invention together! And, yes, I'll give each one of you a ride in our time machine.

Oceanside City Council members voted to have city staffers come back with details of a program that would provide for up to $20,000 in short-term loans for small businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic. Two council members voiced reservations about the plan because Oceanside itself is approaching financial turmoil. Oceaanside, like most cities, has seen tax revenue dropping as people stay home and businesses close.

The city could establish a fund with up to $3 million to help as many as 300 businesses with interest-free loans for 90 days, was the prelimiinary plan. City staffers are already working 12 hour days dealing with COVD19 issue s so they said they’d need at least two weeks to come back with a plan.

John Wooden, the greatest college basketball coach in history, was born on October 14, 1910. He passed away on Friday, June 4, 2010, at the age of 99.

Women of Achievement in Vista - On March 7, the Woman's Club of Vista GFWC honored three Women of Achievement who are volunteers and community leaders for their community service: Julie Lowen, Nancy B Jones, and Eleanor Hutchins. The event at the Community Room of Vista's City Hall was attended by 90 people who enjoyed food, raffles, and silent auctions to raise funds for the Club's scholarships program. The Club awards scholarships to graduating seniors from six Vista schools. Julie Lowen is the Founder, President, and CEO at Children’s Paradise Preschool and Infant Centers. Nancy B Jones is a retired teacher who volunteers providing children's programs at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens and Alamosa Park Elementary. Eleanor Hutchins has been a community volunteer with many organizations for over 40 years. Eleanor was named as Woman of the Year. Last year's Woman of the Year, Mayor Judy Ritter, presented the pin to Eleanor, and March 8 was proclaimed as Eleanor's day in Vista by the Vista City Council. We are in this fight together. While COVID-19 is the hidden enemy, we have seen the toll it’s taken upon our entire County. I mentioned this last week, but it’s just as true today. The Coronavirus doesn’t just affect Republicans or Democrats. It doesn’t discriminate based on the color of your skin, or what language you speak. We must all come together to defeat this enemy. While news continues to move by the hour, I wanted to provide you with an update of what we do know. The County of San Diego has extended its existing public health order indefinitely. The order was set to expire on March 31 but will continue with the closures of nonessential businesses, including bars, restaurant dining areas, schools, gym and fitness centers. Under the order, San Diegans may leave their homes for essential reasons, including buying food, picking up medications and exercising. While we understand these are drastic measures, it’s all done with safety in mind. I also have partnered with Supervisor Gaspar and County Tax Collector, Dan McAllister to send a letter to Gov. Newsom allowing a 60-day deadline extension for property tax payments. We haven’t heard back from the governor, so as of now, if you can pay your property taxes, pay them.

While the number of positive cases continues to rise, thankfully we aren’t seeing the same rate as many other places. Social distancing is the key to defeating COVID-19. Stay safe, stay healthy and together we will get through this!

S.D. Humane Society Launches Innovative Adoption Process - Adopters can participate in a virtual consultation from home during COVID-199 pandemic. In response to California’s ‘Stay at Home’ order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, San Diego Humane Society has changed its adoption process to a virtual experience. SDHS campuses in Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are open by appointment only each day from 10am to 4pm. Interested adopters should call SDHS at 619-299-7012 to make an appointment. An adoption counselor will call the prospective adopter to conduct a virtual consultation over the phone to discuss available animals and help the adopter choose the animal who best fits their lifestyle. The Father of U.S. Air Force

In 1922, aviation pioneer Billy Mitchell correctly predicted what lay ahead in 20th century warfare, but at great personal cost. As early as 1906, Billy Mitchell predicted the strategic implementation of future wars would take place in the air, not on the ground. William "Billy" Mitchell, born Dec. 29, 1879, was an Army general who today is regarded the father of the United States Air Force.

As a result, Mitchell was an embarrassment to both military and civilian leaders. Accordingly, in October 1925, he was court-martialed for “insubordination” because he accused Army and Navy leaders of having an "almost treasonable administration of the national defense" by investing in battleships instead of aircraft carriers.

The court martial lasted for seven weeks. The youngest of the 12 judges was Maj. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who voted for acquittal. MacArthur described sitting as a judge on Mitchell's court-martial as "one of the most distasteful orders I ever received." However, the majority of the panel found him "guilty of all specifications of the charges." The court suspended Mitchell from active duty for five years without pay, which President Coolidge later amended to half-pay. MacArthur said afterward "a senior officer should not be silenced for being at variance with his superiors in rank and with accepted doctrine." It was a stance that would prove to be the general’s undoing decades later.

Shortly after the trial, Mitchell resigned and spent the rest of his life writing and preaching air power. He received many honors, albeit after his death on Feb. 19, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt commissioned him a Major General. He also is the only individual for whom a military aircraft, the North American B-25 Mitchell bomber, is named. The twinengine bomber was used on the heroic “Jimmy Doolittle raid” over Tokyo six months after the Pearl Harbor attack.

In March 1912, Mitchell toured battlefields of the Russo-Japanese War and concluded that war with Japan would someday be a reality.

After World War I, Mitchell began advocating for an increase in U.S. air power. One of the problems he had was “the war to end all wars” had just been fought and few military or civilian really believed in any future conflict. Recognized as one of the top combat airmen of “The Great War,” Mitchell, next to Eddie Rickenbacker, was probably the best-known American in Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal.

After the war, Mitchell began advocating that bombers could sink battleships. While he would prove his theory, it was the beginning of Mitchell’s undoing because few in either the Army or Navy shared his vision.

In February 1921, a bombing demonstration using captured German ships was reluctantly agreed to by the Navy. Mitchell had infuriated the Navy by claiming he could sink ships "under war-time conditions," and boasted he could prove it if he were permitted to bomb and sink captured German battleships. The demonstration was a success.

In 1923, Mitchell repeated the bombing tests with the same results on three obsolete American battleships USS Alabama, USS Virginia and USS New Jersey. President Harding and Navy officials were angry because the demonstration showed U.S. Naval weakness.

Mitchell’s bombing tests caused budgets to be redrawn for further air development and forced the Navy to look more closely at the possibilities of Naval airpower. One of his predictions: ”There would be a future surprise attack on the Hawaiian Islands by

It’s a weird feeling. There’s nothing to do and nowhere to go. Our commercial districts resemble New England beach resorts in the dead of winter. There’s the pervasive mood of apocalyptic movies like “On The Beach” or “The Quiet Place,” but this time there is no nuclear catastrophe or alien invasion. This time we did it to ourselves. For the first time in history, world leaders agreed that it would be better to shut down human activity

In America and most countries the strategy behind this first ever “experimental” attempt to stop a pandemic before it actually becomes one involves a temporary shut down or severe limitation of human interaction. In the USA this involves a “temporary” shutdown of the World’s most powerful and dynamic economy in order to stop the spread of the Covid19 virus. If we are successful, we will never know whether it was worth the disruption because we will never know how bad Corvid19 would have been.

Some will say the effort was worthwhile no matter what the cost simply because it saved lives. In reality, a human life is not “priceless.” If we really believed human life was priceless we would ban alcohol, tobacco, swimming, sky diving, motorcycles, skateboarding and re-set the national speed limit to 25MPH. Whether we wish to accept it or not, human life does have an economic price tag. For many years to come the wisdom of our response to the “Corvid19 crisis” will be a subject for debate. Whatever your personal feelings about the Corvid19 shutdown, it is what it is. We need to play by the rules and get through it. In a strange way it has tended to unite us. It has largely pushed the past three years of political negativity out of the news, our conversations and our minds. It has forced us to look at one another as people and neighbors and not political stereotypes. Some other good things will come out of all this in ways we can’t yet imagine. Times like these force us to re-evaluate old habits and methods and to change. The times we hate living through like Wars, depressions and civil strife usually make us better people when we finally emerge on the other side. So will this.

San Marcos Creek Project Construction Is Underway

The first phase of active construction on the $104 million San Marcos Creek Project has begun. In the upcoming weeks, the construction team is expected to begin clearing non-native plants in the creek bed, building a levee adjacent to Discovery Street, prepping Discovery Street for future widening and closing Bent Avenue for road improvements and bridge construction. Project construction activities are exempt under Governor Newsom's stay at home order, and given the importance of the project and its role in providing critical transportation infrastructure and relief from flooding, the City will continue with construction as planned.

Please note that the health and safety of our community is the City's top priority. The construction team is taking all recommended precautions to stay healthy and safe by following the guidance from public health officials. Residents are encouraged to visit www.san-marcos.net/creek

The City of Oceanside has created a utility service relief program for businesses that must remain closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of the program is to support Oceanside’s local business community and provide relief for water, sewer and solid waste utility services by temporarily stopping all utility services and charges. Oceanside businesses who wish to take advantage of the relief program may complete an online form or contact Oceanside’s Utility Billing Division at (760) 435-3900 and request their account be considered for the “COVID Utility Service Relief Program.” Staff will then begin the verification process to determine if the business meets the qualifications of the program. Qualifying business include bars, restaurants and establishments that were identified for immediate closure in the County’s Emergency Regulations dated March 16, 2020. Eligible businesses must be closed to the public and not providing take-out, catering or drive-through services.

Fighting the Corona Virus

Before I became a Dentist I had received my B.S. in Biology and was completing my Masters in Kinesiology when I left UCLA to go to the Georgetown School of Dentistry. I was very well educated in the sciences and from my early learnings (1970 +) there was the ongoing battle between viruses and humans competing with their ever challenging lethal stains that would wreak havoc on us. As scientists we all knew that someday, thru mutation, a potential strain would develop that could become a world wide pandemic.

Today, we are here and the time is NOW. As a seasoned professional I had a choice to make regarding my role, and my staff’s, in this struggle to overcome this new virus. For me, there was no choice. It is my responsibility to treat those in need of dental emergencies, whether they need an extraction of a tooth, the endodontic treatment of an abscess, an opening and draining of oral tissues, in an effort to free our medical personal for treating the virus. Our physicians, nurses and staff need to be in our hospitals administering to our people, and

we need to handle those needing immediate oral attention but not virurally involved. My staff has agreed to stand with me regarding our role in the effort to survive this calamity. My staff, each one individually, has chosen to take as much risk as I am in the chance that we too may be strickened with this disease, because we all can help. This said, we have taken all the necessary precautions to prevent this from happening, and to prevent its transmission to you. We are donning all the protective measures directed by hazmat, and to meet their specifications in our practice, as they have them in the hospitals. With them in place our chances of encountering the virus directly is limited. We are seeing patients, old and new, that require our immediate attention, Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 – 3:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 – 12:00. These are for persons in need only. We have extensive experience in all aspects of dentistry but for now, emergency services only.
