The Doolittle Raid, also known as the Tokyo Raid, was an air raid on 18 April 1942 by the United States on the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places on Honshu during World War II. It was the first air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago. It demonstrated that the Japanese mainland was vulnerable to American air attack, served as retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor, and provided an important boost to American morale. after Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, later a Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army Air Forces and the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was later promoted to the 4-star rank of General in the United States Air Force Reserve in 1985, after he was in a Retired status. They once were among the most universally admired and revered men in the United States .. There were 80 of the Raiders in April 1942, when they carried out one of the most courageous and heart-stirring military operations in this nation's history. The mere mention of their unit's name, in those years, would bring tears to the eyes of grateful Americans. Now none survive.

After Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, with the United States reeling and wounded, something dramatic was needed to turn the war effort around.
Even though there were no friendly airfields close enough to Japan for the United States to launch a retaliation, a daring plan was devised. Sixteen B-25s were modified so that they could take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier. This had never before been tried -sending such big, heavy bombers from a carrier.
And those men went anyway.
They bombed Tokyo and then flew as far as they could.
The 16 five-man crews, under the command of Lt. Col. James Doolittle, who himself flew the lead plane off the USS Hornet, knew that they would not be able to return to the carrier. They would have to hit Japan and then hope to make it to China for a safe landing.
But on the day of the raid, the Japanese military caught wind of the plan. The Raiders were told that they would have to take off from much farther out in the Pacific Ocean than they had counted on. They were told that because of this they would not have enough fuel to make it to safety. Of the 80 Raiders, 62 survived the war. They were celebrated as national heroes, models of bravery. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced a motion picture based on the raid; "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo ," starring Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson, was a patriotic and emotional box-office hit, and the phrase became part of the national lexicon. In the movie-theater previews for the film, MGM proclaimed that it was presenting the story........ "with supreme pride."
Beginning in 1946, the surviving Raiders have held a reunion each April, to commemorate the mission. The reunion is in a different city each year. In 1959, the city of Tucson, Arizona, as a gesture of respect and gratitude, presented the Doolittle Raiders with a set of 80 silver goblets. Each goblet was engraved with the name of a Raider. Every year, a wooden display case bearing all 80 goblets is transported to the reunion city. Each time a Raider passes away, his goblet is

There has always been a plan: When there are only two surviving Raiders, they would open the bottle, at last drink from it, and toast their comrades who preceded them in death.

Santa Margarita Chapter, DAR, to Host Mobile Education Exhibit for Wreaths Across America - The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), announces that the Wreaths Across America (WAA) Mobile Education Exhibit (MEE) is coming to North County on Sunday, April 25th. The Chapter will host the WAA MEE during an open house to honor our nation's veterans and active duty military.
The MEE will be located at RideNow SoCal, 1725 Hacienda Drive, Vista, from 10am to 4:30pm.

The men decided that after their final public reunion they would wait until a later date -- to get together once more, informally and in absolute privacy.
They don't talk about that, at least not around other people. Yes, they did appreciate hearing that they were remembered.
He was shot down, captured, and spent 22 months in a German prisoner of war camp. The selflessness of these men, the sheer guts ... There was a passage in the Cincinnati Enquirer obituary for Mr. Griffin that, on the surface, had nothing to do with the war, but that was emblematic of the depth of his sense of duty and devotion: "When his wife became ill and needed to go into a nursing home, he visited her every day.
He walked from his house to the nursing home, fed his wife, and at the end of the day brought home her clothes. At night, he washed and ironed her clothes. Then he walked them up to her room the next morning. He did that for three years until her death in 2005." Out of the original 80, only four Raiders
Fort Walton Beach, Florida, marked the end. It had come full circle; Florida 's nearby Eglin Field was where the Raiders trained in secrecy for the Tokyo mission. They did all it could to honor the men: a six-day celebration of their valor, including luncheons, a dinner and a parade.

The Paper SEX ABUSE SURVIVOR SHARES STORY TO EMPOWER OTHERS
Rosie Flores, a former Escondido High School student, who was sexually abused by her step-father from ages six to 12, is sharing her story to empower children to stand up to their abusers. With the help of Palomar Health Forensic Health Services (FHS), she put her abuser behind bars for 372 years to life and now supports others in their journey from survivor to advocate. She currently attends Bucknell University studying Political Science and Pre-Law and plans to become a prosecutor. Her journey from survivor to advocate has been assisted by Palomar Health FHS, which provides forensic health exams to collect evidence used against perpetrators of sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence. FHS also provides victim support services. This virutal even debuted on Tuesday, April 13, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. This was a virtual event.
April is Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Palomar Health FHS performs forensic exams on survivors used by law enforcement to prosecute perpetrators. Last year Palomar Health FHS served 1,408 survivor/victims, honored with individual pinwheels placed at the entrance of Palomar Medical

Absolutely love the man. Every time we have coffee I leave feeling good! He makes me feel good. He inspires me.
We solve all the world's problems in about a half hour, maybe an hour. Then we kibbitz.
Recently, among other things, we talked about what lyle e davis would do if and when he sold the newspaper and no longer had deadlines to deal with. All that free time. Whatever would he do? He's not the type to retire and sit on a rocking chair. He has to be busy doing something worthwhile. Can't really travel that much because (a) travel isn't much fun anymore, too many lines to wait in, too many regulations, (b) not a great demand for jobs for 82 year-old geezers (and I'm not sure I could work for someone else; not used to taking orders and am a stubborn and inde-

Former Escondido City Councilwoman Olga Diaz, who opted not to run for re-election last year after serving 12 years in office, has accepted an executive position at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire.
Her new title will be vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion and student affairs, and she’ll begin work on June 14. “I’m excited,” said Diaz, “but I’ll be leaving a place I love.”
UW-Eau Claire is part of the 13campus University of Wisconsin system, with a student body of about 10,000. Diaz has strong family ties to the area, as her husband, retired Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin, grew up in Eau Claire, and her father-in-law, James Phillip Griffin, was a philosophy professor and chair of the philosophy and religious studies department at UW–Eau Claire. For now, Diaz said, she will be moving to Wisconsin while her husband remains in Escondido to allow the couple’s son to finish high school, with visits back and forth as much as possible. She’ll also continue a doctoral program she began

Sheriff's volunteer? (No, not me), Walmart greeter? (No, thank you), ombudsman for senior citizens (maybe), court appointed advocate for kids (maybe), dog rescuer? (That might work. Love dogs. My problem is, I get way too involved emotionally). Community farmer? Nope. Don't enjoy farming. Plus, information Dick told me puts me off. He said that if you have 1/4 acre of land and hope to farm . . . think twice. It would cost you around $500 a month just for water costs to the city. I had no idea. Secondly, he said, if you want to sell your produce at a Farmer's Market, think again. You have to be certified by the county and they make you jump through all kinds of hoops.
Example: Dick has an acre and a half. He plants avocados, citrus, onions, lettuce, carrots, all types of produce, plus he has bee hives (he's an expert in bees). "If I want to sell my honey I can't just harvest the honey, buy jars, wash them, sterilize them, fill them, put lids on them and then sell them. No, the county will come in and say, 'say, you know you have to be certified to sell that honey. Among other things you have to use only stainless steel equipment plus we have these hoops you have to jump through' - all of which involves added costs.

After dismissing a restraining order Carlsbad City Councilmember Cori Schumacher sought against two critics of her performance as a councilmember, the judge ordered Schumacher to pay attorney fees for both complainants. Judge Cynthia A. Freeland, who dismissed the restraining order in March, granted Anthony Bona his full request of $32,193. She granted Noel Breen a total of $14,453 after part of his request was denied as not appropriate to the case.
“The court’s award of $47,000 against Cori Schumacher — almost twice what she earns every year as a council member — sent a clear message that politicians should respect the First Amendment rights of the public,” Breen’s attorney,

•••• Ranting Time: Will someone please tell women that their false eyelashes that are 1” long do not flatter them? They look totally artificial and ugly. I notice more and more women tv reporters wearing eyelashes that are so huge they distract from the story the reporter is telling and makes the reporter resemble a female clown. •••• Well, we had some fun with our April Fool’s Day cover story concerning the imminent arrival of the Eiffel Tower coming to Escondido as a new and major tourist attraction. Mayor Mac (Paul McNamara) told me

Radio talk-show host and former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio announced he would file an official notice with the city clerk of his intent to circulate a petition to recall the councilwoman. He cited her failed attempt to use the courts to silence her critics as one of several reasons she needs to step down. Schumacher represents council District 1, which covers the city’s northwest quadrant including the downtown Village and Barrio neighborhoods.
Recall proponents will have 120 days to collect the minimum of about 3,800 signatures of District 1 registered voters to require a recall election. Only registered voters in that district could participate in the election.

That’s typical of the comments we received. Most seemed to enjoy the story and enjoyed even more the retelling of the tale.
Our good friends, competitors, and colleagues, over at The Valley Roadrunner featured an April Fool’s Day cover story as well. They posted a story about Governor Newsom arranging to transfer a state prison to Valley Center.
More than a few people bought into this story as well . . and were relieved when they learned it was another of those stories that we newspaper folk sometimes dredge up to channel our readership into fun and games time and get away from the often wearisome and painful real news of the day. Naturally, Justin Salter, the publisher of the Valley News as well as the Escondido Times Advocate, and his editor, David Ross, and myself, have all made a solemn and sacred pledge to never, ever even consider again posting an April Fool’s cover story that is less than 100% truthful, reliable and dependable. Unless we get bored.

Q: I'm trying to get an item exchanged that I bought through Armani Exchange online. Last year, I bought several items from Armani online. One of them, a crew-neck sweatshirt, was too big for me.
I called Armani and a representative told me the warehouse was closed because of COVID-19. I needed to wait until the warehouse reopened to ask for the exchange. A representative told me I could return the item even though we were almost at the end of the 30-day window for returns. I sent an email to the company, asking when the warehouse would open, but no one responded. I waited patiently. Eventually, Armani responded that it had "escalated" my case but couldn't process a return because I was 60 days past my order. But no one had told me about the 60-day limit, and I had tried to return it sooner. Can you help me get my exchange from Armani Exchange? -- Tessa Tan, Dublin, Calif.
A: Armani Exchange, the youth-oriented brand of the Italian designer Giorgio Armani, should have sent you a sweatshirt that fit. Since that didn't happen, the company should have exchanged the sweatshirt for one that did -- pandemic or not.
I've reviewed the extensive email correspondence with Armani Exchange. By the way, nice work keeping all the emails. They are always helpful for a resolution. It looks like you placed your order at the start of the pandemic. Then the Armani Exchange warehouse closed. You asked for an exchange within 30 days, but a representative told you to wait. So you did.
Things get a little murky after that. It's not clear when the warehouse reopened, but by the time Armani Exchange began responding to you, it appears that more than two months had elapsed.

Arbor Day – A Call to Action
Arbor Day is April 30th, an observance that began in 1872 when the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture adopted a resolution creating a day set aide to plant trees. The holiday spread throughout the United States and is observed in many countries around the world. California’s observance is March 7th, and coincides with the birthday of botanist Luther Burbank. Today, many communities organize treeplanting and litter-collecting events to coincide with the holiday. But whichever day we observe, it’s a call to action. In California, the Legislature first proclaimed California Arbor Day on March 7, 1974 to encourage people to plant trees and organize civic engagement in protecting urban trees. Trees moderate temperature extremes and reduce energy consumption. They also reduce emissions and air pollution and help meet statuary pollution limits by sequestering carbon. Trees remove airborne pollutants from the atmosphere, help purify our water supplies by reducing surface runoff, aid water management and protect water resources. Trees are also a valuable economic asset that can maintain and increase property values and attract new businesses to

They enhance the aesthetic quality of our communities by functioning as natural barriers for surface noise, and provide badly needed habitat for wildlife, including birds and many threatened or endangered species. A recent study by the U.S. Forest Service indicated that our nation’s cities lose around 175,000 acres or 36 million trees each year. That trend can be reversed.
California is a national leader on climate protections and emission reductions. Planting trees is a simple, but significant step that will improve and enhance our environment. It’s a step we all can take -and we certainly don’t need to limit our tree planting activities to just one or two days each year. Trees are wonderful! Let’s plant more of them. We’ve all heard the same political campaign speech, ‘We need to solve homelessness,’ and while it sounds good, that promise which has been made time and time again, usually lacks substance. San Diego County continues to struggle with an on-going crisis of homelessness with an estimated 22,000 people experiencing homelessness at some point throughout the year. While much of the focus on homelessness is in the urban core, North San Diego County feels the effects. In 2019, 1,540 homeless individuals were counted in one night, in the North County. Despite millions of dollars being spent, improvement has been limited.
Earlier this week, I partnered with Supervisor Lawson-Remer on a board letter, which looks to make a significant impact to address North County’s homeless population. The action develops a North County pilot program, which includes teams of outreach staff and will be compromised of highly qualified social workers, which will be deployed in cities to develop trust and build relationships with homeless individuals. Working closely with each City government’s homeless personnel and resources, the County staff will leverage resources regionally, across jurisdictional lines. They will be able to transport clients and will have access to
funds to provide for incidentals such as clothing, food, help obtaining identification and short-term motel vouchers as part of the engagement. This engagement will lead to services and housing, getting this vulnerable population off the street, making a dent in the crisis facing many of our cities.
Currently, each of the eight cities in North County have various service providers, which deploy resources and programs, however in order to truly tackle this problem, the elected leaders in these cities have come together to coordinate a regional approach and collaborate with the County. This will provide a greater level of outreach and support to unhoused individuals. For too long those experiencing homelessness and the residents of San Diego County have been given empty promise upon empty promise. The time for talk is done. It’s time for San Diego County and North County to step up to address this problem together.

This is a difficult case because we don't have Armani's side of the story. If you were within Armani's 20-day window, you should be able to get a new shirt. But there was no way to get a full picture without Armani Exchange's help. So I reached out to the company. It didn't answer (perhaps because of the pandemic?). So I tried one more time. Silence, again. Unfortunately, without Armani's cooperation, I can't mediate a resolution. My advice? Talk to your credit card company about initiating a dispute on the charge. It certainly looks as if you did everything you could to do a timely exchange. You deserve either a new sweatshirt or a full refund.

TAP Air Portugal rescheduled my flight -- can I get a refund?
TAP Air Portugal reschedules -and then cancels -- John Schmidt's flights. He wants a refund, but the airline is offering a voucher. Who is right?
Q: In August 2019 I booked two roundtrip tickets to Lisbon on TAP Air Portugal, using Flight Network, an online travel agency. In March 2020, two months before my scheduled departure, TAP notified me of a significant schedule change. My new outbound flight departed a day later than originally scheduled. My new return flight left two hours earlier. Considering these changes, I requested a full refund, as all my travel plans were essentially negated. Almost two weeks later, Flight Network notified me that my flights were canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic and that TAP was offering vouchers. I reminded Flight Network that my refund request was due to changes made by TAP and not the pandemic.
Flight Network again conveyed my request for a full refund. TAP responded to Flight Network with “We will advise our refund department of passenger's decision” and “This case will be closed.” Not very reassuring. I understand

these are trying times. However, I am concerned that my request may have been discarded or worse yet, that my refund may have been indefinitely postponed. Can you help me get my refund? -- John Schmidt, New York
A: You're right, this refund request has nothing to do with the pandemic. TAP Air Portugal changed your flight by an entire day. TAP's general conditions of carriage (the legal agreement between you and the airline) address your situation. Section 8.2.1 says if the airline cancels your flight, it will give you a full refund of the ticket not flown, in the form of travel credit or refund through the same form of payment you made when you purchased the ticket. TAP canceled your flight and rescheduled you for the next day. Case closed.
So what went wrong? It looks like something may have gotten lost in translation between Flight Network and TAP. It's true that you need to make a refund request through your online agent, but nothing is stopping you from also contacting the airline directly. I list the names, numbers and email addresses of all the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/tap-airportugal/">TAP Air Portugal managers</a> on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.
A brief, polite email to one of them might have helped. Or not. At the time you sought a refund, TAP was trying to process more refund requests than it had ever seen at once. And in that sense, the pandemic had a lot to do with your refund problem. It looks as if your case got thrown in with the rest of them, with someone deciding that a voucher was your only option. Understandable -- and unfortunate. I contacted TAP Air Portugal on your behalf. A representative called you and said a "system glitch or human error" had delayed your refund. TAP returned your money, as promised.

A Nearly Forgotten Woman: Clara Barton
From 1865 to 1868, Barton achieved widespread recognition by delivering lectures around the country about her war experiences. During this time she met Susan B. Anthony and began an association with the woman's suffrage (right to vote) movement. She also became acquainted with abolitionist Frederick Douglass, becoming an activist for civil rights.
Clarissa Harlowe Barton, born Dec. 25, 1821, was the founder of the American Red Cross after being a hospital nurse during the Civil War. In addition, she also had been a teacher, and a patent clerk. Since nursing education was not then very formalized and she did not attend nursing school, Barton provided selftaught nursing care. She was doing humanitarian work and civil rights advocacy at a time before women had the right to vote.
In 1870, at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War, Barton assisted in the preparation of military hospitals and gave much help to the European Red Cross Society during that war.
For the past year, much of the pandemic focus has been on front-line nurses, so it’s fitting that Clara Barton be recognized and remembered as America’s first official nurse.
Born in North Oxford, Mass., her father was Captain Stephen Barton, a member of the local militia and town leader who inspired his daughter with patriotism and a broad humanitarian interest. Barton became an educator in 1838, teaching for 12 years in schools in Canada and Georgia. Barton knew how to handle rambunctious children, particularly the boys since as a child she was close to her brothers and boy cousins. She learned how to act like them, making it easier for her to later relate to and control the young men in her care.
On April 19, 1861, the Baltimore Riot resulted in the first bloodshed of the Civil War. Some of the wounded were transported to Washington D.C., where Barton was living at the time. Wanting to serve her country, Barton went to the railroad station when the victims arrived where she gave aid to some 40 wounded. Barton provided crucial assistance to the men in uniform, many of whom were hungry and without any supplies other than what they carried on their backs. She began helping them by taking supplies to the partially constructed U.S. Capitol Building where young soldiers of her home state’s 6th Massachusetts Militia were housed.
Barton quickly recognized some of the boys, a few of which she had taught in school. Barton, along with some other women, provided clothing, food, and supplies for the sick and wounded soldiers. She learned how to store and distribute medical supplies and offered emotional support to the soldiers by keeping their spirits high. Barton read to them, wrote letters to their families, talked and supported them in any way she could.
After the end of the Civil War, Barton discovered thousands of letters from distraught families to the War Department were going unanswered concerning the missing soldiers, many of them buried across the South in unmarked graves. Many were
After her nationwide tour in 1868, she was both mentally and physically exhausted and under doctor's orders she took a break from her work. Barton closed the Missing Soldiers Office and traveled to Europe. In 1869, during her trip to Geneva, Switzerland, Barton was invited to be the representative for the U.S. branch of the European Red Cross and helped her find financial benefactors to start the “American Red Cross Society.”
In 1873, when Barton returned home, she began a movement for the U.S. government to officially recognize the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In 1878, she met with then-President Rutherford B. Hayes, but he doubted the nation would ever see another calamity like the Civil War. Barton persisted and finally succeeded getting said recognition during the administration of President Chester Arthur. She argued that in addition to war, the new American Red Cross could respond to crises such as natural disasters like earthquakes, forest fires, and hurricanes. Barton became president of the society, which was officially founded Aug. 22, 1881 in Dansville, New York, where she maintained a country home
In 1884, Barton helped in the floods on the Ohio river, provided Texas with food and supplies during the famine of 1887 and took nurses to Illinois in 1888 after a tornado, and in that same year to Florida for a yellow fever epidemic. In response to the Johnstown Flood of 1889, she led a delegation of 50 doctors and nurses. In 1897, Barton sailed to Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey where she opened the first American International Red Cross headquarters. Barton's last field operation as president of the American Red Cross was helping victims of the Galveston hurricane in 1900.
In 1897, at age 76, Barton continued to live in her Glen Echo, Maryland home which also served as the Red Cross Society’s national headquarters. In 1898, the society's role changed with the advent of the Spanish-American War during which time it aided both military and civilian wounded. Barton published her autobiography in 1907. On April 12, 1912, she died in her home at the age of 90. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1973.

This presented a unique challenge to local artists. After the first two barriers in front of the Escondido Art Association’s (EAA) Artists Gallery located at 121 W. Grand Avenue were painted, business owners along Grand Avenue asked if their barriers could be decorated as well. Passers-by asked if they could participate, and the Beautify Escondido (BE) Movement, under the umbrella of the Escondido Art Association (EAA), was created and took off. At the time, it was uncertain how long the barriers would be in place, but it did not deter the volunteers from completing their mission of

changing the look of Grand Avenue, Escondido.
The goal of the Beautify Escondido (BE) Movement was to make a positive difference in a difficult time by uniting and infusing energy and optimism into our city during the Covid pandemic. Interested parties were given a chance to express their artistic talents by serving the community, keeping our city alive, supporting our businesses and setting a goal to attract and capture the eye of visitors. The City of Escondido was incredibly supportive of the project and city employees provided much assistance. Escondido Rotary, Escondido Shines, the Escondido Downtown Business Association, the Chamber of Commerce, MAGEC, Mandala Creations, businesses on Grand Avenue and last, but by no means least, all of the volunteer artists united in making the BE Barrier Painting Project a success. Completion of the BE barrier decoration project was celebrated in connection with The Second Saturday Art Walk on November 14, 2020. Two unpainted barriers located in front of 150 West Grand Avenue were reserved for a special occasion. Persons from supporting and donating organizations, the Mayor of Escondido, Paul McNamara, along with assisting
city employees and special guests were invited to add “words of wisdom”, special wishes, signatures, or decorations of their choice to the unpainted barriers. This event completed the decorating of the barriers with the credo: “The Escondido Coloring Book of Hope”. A profound expression was used by one of the city employees, Joanne Axelrod, to express her emotions: “Turning a safety necessity into a canvas for art and beauty is truly a positive silver lining of this pandemic.” The BE barrier painting project turned out to be an inspiration for further artistic efforts to enhance the downtown Escondido cityscape. The task of beautifying dumpsters has recently been tackled and several future art projects are on the horizon. This was just the awakening of a rousing movement, the brainchild of Escondido Art Association's Ambassador Suzanne Nicolaisen, to beautify the City of Escondido. The Policeman said, 'Good boy', and he turned to the man and said, 'That woman is in possession of marijuana, I'm making a note of her seat number and the authorities will apprehend her when we land.’ 'Gee, that's pretty good,' replied the first man. Once again, the Policeman sent Sniffer to search the aisles.

As a pastor, people often ask me how do I choose a church to attend. Occasionally, they are asking because they are new to a community, have not attended in a while or something is going on in their life and they decide to look for spiritual answers.

An interesting point is that many people make up their mind if they will return to a church within seven minutes. If that’s the case, you likely would not have even heard the sermon. (Churches, take note).
The most important aspect to consider is that the Bible is preached or taught. Whoever is giving the message, it should be based on God’s Word.
Another thing to consider is worship style. Churches worship God in lots of ways. It would be helpful if the style doesn’t get in your way of knowing more about God and experiencing Him. Hopefully, it will lead you closer to God.
Other factors that you might consider are the people themselves. Can you relate to them? Are they friendly? Encouraging? Warm? Do you feel at home there? Are their activities for your children? More than anything, pray and ask God to guide you in your search. If you sense His presence, His word is preached and it feels like home, you might just be in the place for you.

Spring cleaning is a time to tidy up our homes and yards, dust off the winter cobwebs, collect dust bunnies and remove household hazardous waste (HHW) from your home. HHW includes a variety of materials such as paint, household cleaners, pool chemicals, automotive products and pesticides typically found in your garage or under the sink. HHW items often have labels including: caution, warning, danger, toxic or flammable. These hazardous waste items must be properly disposed of and cannot be thrown away in household trash or poured down the sink.

On the 1st of April The Paper published its April Fools edition where my good friend, Lyle Davis, who is also the editor gave me credit for bringing the Eiffel Tower to Escondido. I want to give Lyle a shout out for retaining his sense of humor during this pandemic, and remembering that not everything in the world is serious. Good example for all of us. I have to admit, I wasn’t in on the joke and so was very surprised when I started to receive texts. My response was – What are you talking about, until I read the article, and then I couldn’t stop laughing. Interestingly, there were a number of folks, who initially at least, thought it was true. I interpret that as The Paper having some good writers who are able to convince people. Well done to everyone!
On a more serious note, as I write this article, we will be discussing Cannabis at today’s council meeting. It was taken off the agenda of the last one. This is an important topic that we need to discuss as a community. I’m sure you’ve heard all the arguments both for and against. If there was an easy solution, we would have done if by now. So, please engage and share your thoughts on this important topic.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DELL COMPUTER!
Oh sure, there are computers that say Dell on the outside but, everyone knows they’re not really Dells. Sometimes we have folks come in looking for a specific brand of PC. “I always had good luck with HP computers; do you have any of those?” Its really hard not sound like a “smart ass” when we tell them that the logo on outside of the Dell or HP has nothing to do with the quality and reliability on the inside, here’s why that’s true. To build today’s standard Desktop PC you start with a motherboard which has audio, video and all of the inter-

faces built in. Then you need an external case, power supply, CPU, memory (RAM) and storage device (HDD or SSD). That’s six components, seven if you opt for a DVD player. Guess what! Dell and HP don’t make any of those parts, none. The next step is to put those parts together, load Microsoft’s Windows10 and make sure that everything works. Uh-oh Dell and HP don’t do that either. The assembly is done by contract manufacturers in low rent countries like China. After market warranty and service are also handled by third party contractors. So what does the Dell or HP logo mean on a computer? Since they make none of the parts, don’t do any assembly and test and use third party contractors to deliver and service the products the logo means absolutely nothing. Dell and HP are marketing companies for ASIAN PCs. There is no such thing as a Dell computer. That being said, the same is true of all the other computer brands. They are all an assemblage of components that are manufactured by someone else, yet some PC brands have achieved a reputation for quality and reliability while others are regarded as low in quality and reliability. ASUS, Samsung and Toshiba are held in high regard because they use premium components throughout their product lines. Their products are aimed at buyers who understand and can appreciate quality and performance and are willing to pay a premium price to get it. Packard Bell, E-Machine and Gateway used the cheapest components and manufacturing processes available to price compete for unso-

Similar to baseball cards being part of American history and folklore, comic books have served the same role. Of course, comic books have usually, but not always, been based on fictional characters, and comic books have also not been in the mainstream of American culture for as long as baseball cards.
As with baseball cards, stories of early comic books being thrown away are common. Most Americans have a tale to tell how their comics disappeared, and now those very same comics are worth a small fortune.
But for those people who may own some early-day comics, they are quite valuable. Comics from 1933 to 1940 are quite scarce, and very desirable.
Most people in the comic industry agree that the history of comic books began in the early 1930s when M.C. Gaines decided to put together a number of newspaper comic strips in a magazine form as a giveaway to purchasers of Ivory
Soap. Soon, other companies saw the popularity of such magazines, and soon more strips were being reprinted.
Shortly thereafter, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, a real entrepreneur, started National Allied Publications. That company began printing New Comics and New Fun Comics in 1935. Each new comic had 32 tabloid newspaper-sized pages, and a full-color cover. Comics featured some of the same characteristics that we take for granted today, namely, humor, sports, adventure, and an extended story. The following year Wheeler-Nicholson folded the pages in half, resembling the comic books of today. The next year, 1937, it started another company, Detective Comics. D.C. Detective Comics was the first comic book devoted to a simple theme. Later that year, Wheeler-Nicholson sold his share of the business to Harry Donenfeld.
The following year D.C. Comics started Action Comics, and of course the introduction of an all-time favorite, Superman.

So while there really is no such thing as a Dell or HP computer, there is a huge difference in the price and quality of their retail vs. corporate product offerings. You could say that a retail HP or Dell is an E-Machine and their corporate offerings are ASUS computers. Indeed, a refurbished five year old Dell or HP “corporate” model is, hands down, a better computer than a brand new retail model, and about half the price.

Action Comics #1 was published in June 1938, and literally changed American culture. The front cover shows Superman, which was the first appearance of the mythical hero. Even though only a number of pages, not the entire issue, involve Superman, that particular issue is the comic book most coveted. It is believed that there are fewer than 25 graded unrestored copies of that first issue. If you do desire to own a copy, be prepared to pay top dollar, and keep in mind that an unrestored copy is worth considerably more than a restored copy. A restored copy is usually characterized by tape. With the introduction of Action Comics #1, comic books were on their way. But as popular as Superman has become through the years, the fact remains that Superman almost never came to life. Several earlier versions had failed to fly. The two creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, had tried for years to have their creation published. The final version happened one night in 1934, and in actuality, Siegel and Shuster wrote and drew several weeks’ worth of comic strips in less than 24 hours. But publishers were not
enthusiastic. For four years they tried to sell Superman to newspaper syndicates without success. Finally, in 1938, D.C. editor Vin Sullivan chose Superman from a pile of rejected strips sent to him, later saying that he did so simply because it “looked different” from the rest.
